Tim Kruse

KAMRAR - Tim Kruse, 55, of Kamrar, and formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 31, at Fosters Chapel, Webster City, with Arlyn Hansen, youth minister of the Community Church, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City at 1:30 p.m., Friday, December 31. Visitation was at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center at Webster City from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 30 and will be one hour prior to service on Friday.

Tim Allen Kruse, son of Ben and Dorothy Marth Kruse, was born February 12, 1949 at Iowa City. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1967. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Vietnam War. He attended an auto mechanic school at Omaha, Neb. He moved to Webster City from Charles City 25 years ago. He married Diane Elliott and to this marriage three children were born. They were later divorced. He farmed in the Kamrar area until his retirement, due to failing health, in 1989. In 1990, he married Sharon Craig in Missouri. They were campground hosts at the Brushy Creek Recreational Area for six months each summer, for the past 11 years.Mr. Kruse is survived by his wife Sharon; son and daughter-in-law J.C. and Amanda Kruse of Bondurant; daughters Jennifer and Julie Kruse, both of Des Moines; step-children Denise Bull of Des Moines, Don and Melissa Monroe of Kamrar, Deanna and Brett Carr, Donna and Curt Ites and David Wheeler, all of Iowa Falls; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; aunts; uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a past president of the Kamrar Lions Club, member of American Legion at Charles City and the Webster City Moose Family Center. He enjoyed camping and horseback riding. He will be sorely missed by his two Dachshund puppies, Sissy and Dappy, his constant companions. His hobbies included accompanying his wife, Sharon, to her many Bingo calling assignments at the Moose, Hamilton County Fairgrounds and the Kamrar Lions. He was an avid collector of 1/64th scale model semi-trucks, as well as many specialty belt buckles. One of his favorite annual events was attending the Iowa State Fair.

Marian C. Kraft

NASHUA - Marian C. Kraft, 82, of Nashua, passed away Wednesday morning, December 29, 2004 at her home of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, January 3, 2005, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua with Pastor Marion Sindt officiating. Burial will be Sunday, January 2, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to service time at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua.

Robert W. 'Bob' Lewis

Robert W. ('Bob') Lewis, 86, of 612 Third Avenue, Charles City, died of natural causes on December 30, 2004, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Robert Walker Lewis was born April 24, 1918, in Tipton, Iowa, the son of Lewis R. Lewis and Merta Lou (Walker) Lewis. Robert attended grade school in southern Iowa, graduated from high school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree (magna cum laude) in Romance Languages at Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Ill., in 1939.

After college, Robert took a job as an announcer at KGLO Radio in Mason City, where he met and married Gladys (Ward) Lewis. When the United States entered the Second World War, Robert and Gladys moved to Alameda, California, where Robert was employed in the shipyards. In February of 1946, Robert and his family returned to Iowa. He found a job at Salsbury Laboratories in Charles City, beginning as a copywriter and progressing to management positions until his retirement in 1983.

Robert was the recipient of numerous honors both in college and during his working career. An excellent writer, he had a great enthusiasm for the precise use of language. His other passions included watching all manner of sports activities, listening to Tony Bennett, poring over newspapers, and conversing at every opportunity with friends, classmates, business associates, and people he met in his daily life. He was known to possess an encyclopedic memory, and was particularly proud of his membership in the American Mensa Society. In the early part of his years in Charles City, he was active in the Congregational Church, service clubs, and the YMCA.

Robert is survived by his wife, Gladys, and their six children: Geoffrey Lewis (Ginny), of Yuma, Ariz., Gwenyth L. Martin of Ely, Iowa, Meredith Lewis and Jamison Lewis of Charles City, Daniel Lewis (Angela) of Marion, Iowa, and John Lewis (Melissa) of Garrett Park, Md., plus nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. His parents and his three sisters, Genevieve, Nadine and Gertrude, preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Gary Schroeder

Gary Schroeder, 54, of Charles City died, Monday, December 20, 2004, at his residence.

Memorial services for Gary Schroeder will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 7, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service.

Gary Wayne Schroeder was born September 14, 1950, at Charles City the son of Russell and Viola (Debban) Schroeder. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1968, received a Business Degree from Mankato State in 1972 and a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology from Winona State. He married Vicki Guthart and they later divorced. Gary worked for a number of years at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn. and then owned and operated the "Time Out Restaurant" in New Hampton. His hobbies included fishing and participating in and watching sports.

Living family members include a son, Benjamin Jon Schroeder; a brother, Russell (Vicky) Schroeder, Jr. of Charles City; a sister, 'Ginny' Schroeder of Charles City; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard B. 'Rick' Cavell

Richard B. 'Rick' Cavell, 50, of 201 N. Illinois St. in Charles City, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 1, 2005, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

No formal visitation or service is planned at this time for Rick, however, a memorial service will take place in Oregon at a later date.

Richard Brian Cavell was born March 6, 1954, in Corvalis, Oregon to John F. and Irene D. (Balloun) Cavell. He was the third of five children born to his parents.

Rick,' as he was fondly known by his family and friends, enjoyed playing drums in a neighborhood band during his teen years.

On October 2, 1981, Rick was united in marriage to Maria Elena Blanco in Salem, Oregon. Together they treasured each other's company, perfecting woodworking projects, occasionally traveling and listening to rock and roll music. For the first seven years of their marriage, Rick and Maria lived in Europe.

Rick was inducted into the United States Army on March 23, 1982, and proudly served his country during the Gulf War-Desert Storm as a finance specialist. After honorably and faithfully serving his country, Rick was formally discharged from his military duties on Dec. 10, 1993.

Rick was a devoted husband and father. His highest priority included spending time bonding with his children. He was an avid sports fan...particularly cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes and watching baseball, football or golf games. In his leisure time, Rick created wonderful woodwork projects and took great pride in tending to yard work. His family describe Rick as a strong conservative with a mellow, kind and laid-back personality.

Rick's memory will be dearly cherished by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Cavell of Charles City; his two sons, Ricky and Todd Cavell of Charles City; his daughter, Cristen Cavell of Madras, Ore.; his two sisters, Nancie (Rich) Custer of Winnemucca, Nev., and Janice (Tom) Sabatly of Madras, Ore.; his two brothers, Allen Cavell of Edina, Minn., and Gene (Linda) Cavell of Keizer, Ore., and one grandson, Damon Cavell of Madras, Ore.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents, John and Irene Cavell.


Betty L. Brown

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri - Betty L. Brown passed away Jan. 2, 2005, in Springfield, Mo. Betty was born July 29, 1931, to Ernie and Dorothy Taylor of Charles City. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Dale A. Brown, and brother, Jesse Taylor.

She is survived by sons Thomas and Lee; daughter Kathy; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Jerrie Reed, Ruth Smith, Thelma Kellogg, Beverly Coleman, Pauline Tupy and brother Calvin Taylor.

Funerals services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in the Little Brown Church, Nashua. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

GREENE - Funeral services for Mary Magdeline Hesalroad, 95, 301 South Main Street, Greene, the sister of Raymond (Ardis) DeMar of Charles City, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 6, 2005, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 5, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Rosary conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday one hour before the Mass.

Albert G. Feldman

Albert G. Feldman, of Charles City, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2004, at the VA Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa. Graveside services with full military honors for Albert G. Feldman will be 2:00 pm Friday, January 7, at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn. Memorials in his name may be directed to the VA Central Iowa Health Care Facility, 1515 West Pleasant, Knoxville, Iowa, 50138.

Albert George Feldman was born October 26, 1929, at Chicago, Ill., the son of George and Dora Feldman. Albert graduated from high school in St. Paul, Minnesota, and studied Natural science during his three years of college. He was employed in forestry with the United States Government in Montana before entering the United Sttes Army during the Korean Conflict. He served with C Company 519th Military Police Batalion as a field wireman during his 525 days in Korea. The Korean Service Medal with three bronze Service Stars and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal ere among those he was awarded. He had been married to Hedy Staness; to this union two children were born: Michael and Aviva. The couple later divorced. After his military service Albert was employed as a laboratory worker for several hospitals in California and Minnesota. He moved to Charles City approximately 10 years ago but spent the last 18 months in the VA Central Iowa Health Care Facility in Knoxville, Iowa.Albert G. Feldman is survived by his son: Michael Greenspan of Van Nuys, California, and his daughter: Aviva Granowitz of Gardenia, California. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joseph Ottengheime

NEWBURY PARK, Calif. - Joseph Ottengheime, age 79, of Newbury Park, Calif. (formerly of Charles City), has died from complications of diabetes.

A memorial will be scheduled later in 2005.

Joseph was born Feb. 18, 1925 in Amboy, Ill. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was the bakery manager at Trowbridges in Charles City until 1963. Prior to that, Joseph owned his own bakeries.

Joseph and his family moved to the west coast, where he continued in bakery management until retiring.

Joseph is survived by four children: Mary (Ottengheime) Tjaden and Larry of Charles City, Jo Ellen and Victor Corral of Newbury Park, Calif., Jon Ottengheime of Seattle, Wash., Paul and Terri Ottengheime of Altadena, Calif.; a brother, John Ottengheime and his wife, Eileen, of Rockford, Ill.; a sister, Mary Fassler of Franklin, Ill.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.

Irene A. Rodenbeck

ROCKFORD/GREENE - Funeral services for Irene A. Rodenbeck, 90, formerly of Rockford and Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 7, 2005, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, January 6, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a public Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.Irene Arletta Kock was born September 30, 1914, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Charles August Leo and Ada Elizabeth (Smith) Kock, and died Monday, January 3, 2005, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

She was baptized on October 10, 1915, and was confirmed May 19, 1929, at St. Peter Lutheran Churchin Greene. She received her education in the Bristow and Greene Public Schools. She was united in marriage to Alfred H. Rodenbeck on November 22, 1936, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

They farmed west of Greene for six years and later farmed South of Greene. In 1962 when they moved into their new home in Greene. Several years later they returned to their farm where they remained until moving to Allison. In 1992 they moved to Rockford until they both entered the nursing home on January 31, 1997. For 28 years they spent their winters in Brownsville, Texas. They celebrated their 60th Anniversary shortly before his death on April 15, 1997.

Irene worked with her husband on the farm. She was a kind and caring person and a very good housekeeper.

Living family members include her brother: Sylvan (Thelma) Kock of Rockford; and 17 nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two sisters: Ila Ruth in infancy, and Phyllis Brandau in 1995.

Iva Smith, 87, of Charles City, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Iva Smith

Iva Smith, 87, of Charles City, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Iva Smith will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Iva Mae Ward Smith was born December 12, 1917, at Wesley, the daughter of W.A. and Tracy (Goetz) Ward. She graduated from Wesley High School and attended business school in Des Moines. On March 18, 1939, she was united in marriage to J. Douglas Smith at Fresno, Calif. While living in California she worked in various retail businesses and then owned and operated several businesses. In 1993 they retired and moved to Charles City. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Guild and St. Jude Circle. Iva enjoyed both vegetable and flower gardening.

Living family members include her husband, J. Douglas of Charles City; two children, Joyce Mowry of Modesto, Calif., and William 'Bill' (Myrna) Smith of Chico, Calif.; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; a sister, Donna (Gil) White of Charles City; and a brother, William O. (Wanda) Ward of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Gerri Smith; a brother, Edward Fay Ward.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa Charles City Site or the Immaculate Conception Catholic School Educational Assistance Fund.

Donna M. Campbell

STORY CITY, Iowa - Donna M. Campbell, 78, of Story City, formerly of Rudd, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 8, at the Rudd United Methodist Chruch, 611 6th Street, Rudd, with Reverend Wendy Johannesen and Reverend Brian MacNamara officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 7, from 5-7 p.m. at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs.

The family requests memorials be sent to the Rudd Community Betterment Association, Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community Schools for use in the art department, or Grace United Methodist Church in Story City.

Donna May Campbell was born on a farm near the Shell Rock River between Rock Falls and Nora Springs, and was a sixth generation Iowan. Her parents were Oscar and Vivian (Schultz) Andresen. She attended rural schools in and near Nora Springs and Rudd and graduated from Rudd High School. Donna married Riley Campbell, Jr. in 1945. Donna and Riley raised three children and farmed in the Rudd and Nora Springs area until Riley's death in 1973. After her husband' death, Donna attended North Iowa Area Community College and Mankato State University and was a classmate with her daughter Kay. After graduation from Mankato State, Donna taught art at Preston Community Schools for over 10 years. After retiring from teaching, she resided in Story City.

Donna will be remembered for her independence, resourcefulness, and strong spirit. She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed painting, especially china painting and pottery. She also enjoyed gardening, animals, outdoor activities, and following her grandchildren's athletic and academic activities.

Donna is survived by three children: Bruce (Beverly Evans) Campbell of Cumming, Iowa, Boyd (Debra) Campbell of Rudd and Kay (Ron) Cosner of Tempe, Ariz. She is also survived by grandchildren Daniel Miller and Jillian Miller of Tempe, Ariz., Leah Badertscher of Iowa City, Andrew Campbell of Hannibal, Mo., Elizabeth Campbell and Will Campbell of Rudd, Anne Campbell of New York City, John Campbell currently in the Peace Corps in Peru, Joshua Grenier of Minneapolis, and Clarice Grenier Grabau of Northfield, Minn., two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and one brother, Paul L. Andresen of Ocean Springs, Miss.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Riley, her brothers Duane Andresen and Glen Andresen, and her sister Velda Marth.

Gayle (Arickx) Mogren

Gayle (Arickx) Mogren, 79, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Floyd, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

Gayle Jane Arickx Mogren was born September 22, 1925, at White Bear Lake, Minn., the daughter of Robert and Angela (Taylor) Stevens. She grew up in St. Paul, Minn., and attended Harding High School. On September 23, 1950, Gayle was united in marriage to Joseph Arickx. They moved to Floyd where she lived most of her life raising a family, working for a short time at Salsbury Laboratories and owning and operating Joe and Gayle's Cafe from 1956 to 1964. They then moved to an acreage outside of Floyd where Gayle opened an upholstery shop which she operated until Josephâs death in 1974. Gayle was then employed at Dale's Automotive until June 19, 1993 when she married Richard 'Dick' Mogren and moved to Cedar Rapids. Before moving to Cedar Rapids Gayle was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and while in Cedar Rapids a member of All Saints Catholic Church. Memberships also included the St. Catherine's Circle, Navy Mothers and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Gayle volunteered for the Respite Program of Mercy Hospital and the March of Dimes. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, flower gardening, cooking and sewing.

Living family members include her husband, Richard 'Dick' of Cedar Rapids; three children, Sharon (Bill) Bledsoe of Charles City, Gary (Carol) Arickx of Floyd and Kristie (Terry) Teeple of Monroe; 10 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three sisters, Lorraine Fales of St. Paul, Minn., Genevieve (Ed) Husnik of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Mary Ellen Hansen of White Bear Lake, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin granddaughters; a brother and a sister.

Leila D. Lauterbach

MARBLE ROCK: Funeral services for Leila D. Lauterbach, 85, of 1427 280th Street, Marble Rock, will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock with Pastor Ruth Yeaton of the First Baptist Church of Charles City officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock and an hour before services on Tuesday.

Leila Dorothy Nash was born May 18, 1919, near Colwell, Chickasaw County, a daughter of Volney Osborne and Gladys Vera (Kinney) Nash, and died Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

The first years of her life she lived near Rolla Missouri later returning to Rural Marble Rock where she received her education in the Garber Country School. She later attended and graduated from the Marble Rock Public Schools. She played the slide trombone in the school band and learned to play piano from her aunt, Bernice Kinney. Leila went on the attend and graduate from the State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls in 1945. Upon obtaining her teachers degree, she taught 2nd grade in Postville, Iowa for several years, before teaching in Geneva. It was through a teacher friend that Leila was introduced to Peter Lauterbach.

On March 7, 1950 she was united in marriage to Peter Lauterbach at the Bethel Baptist Church in Marble Rock. Following their marriage they bought an 160 acre farm 5 miles West and South of Marble Rock.. There they raised three boys sending them all through college. Leila and Peter farmed until their retirement in 1982. When they retired Brian and Edward Lauterbach rented the land on the family farm . Leila and Peter lived on the family farm until entering the Salsbury Baptist Home in September of 2004.

Liela was a loving wife and mother. She was a good cook who learned her skills at "Momaâs side" at a young age. She enjoyed serving her family by cooking their meals, sewing and doing needle work.

Liela will be sadly missed by her husband, Peter Lauterbach of Marble Rock, her children, John (Catherine) Lauterbach of Fort Worth, Texas, Edward Lauterbach of Marble Rock, Brian (Barbara Blomki)Lauterbach of Charles City, grandaughter Anna Alis Lauterbach of Charles City, Brother-in-law Paul Gratias, of Osage, nephews, George Nash of Rockford, Claud Nash of Rockford, James Nash of Florida,Tom Nash of Rudd, Daniel Nash of Charles City, Lyle Snelson, Volney Nash of Kentucky, Roger Gratias of Osage, Raymond Gratias, Fort Collins, Colo., nieces, Gloria Nash of Washington State, Miriam Nash of Des Moines, Iowa, Kathy Snelson of Tipp City, Ohio, grand nephews and nieces and great grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceeded in death by her parents, Volney and Gladys( Kinney) Nash, her sisters, Eunice Nancy Maxson, Lavera Minnie Gratias, and Lois Lavon Wilkinson, Bernice Miriam Snelson, her brothers, Donald Thomas Nash, Merle Calvin Nash, and Robert Volney Nash, her aunt, Bernice Kinney, her nephews, Sherry Nash, Steven Nash and Stanley Nash, her nieces Linda Squires, Mavis Gratias.

Eva Scheidecker

Eva Scheidecker, 88, of Charles City, entered into the presence of her Lord on Friday, January 7, 2005, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Eva Scheidecker will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Mr. Steve Faulkner will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua.

Eva Merle Smiley Scheidecker was born April 4, 1916 near Osage, Minn,, the daughter of Ellsworth James and Vina Mae (Estabrooks) Smiley. When she was two they moved to Staples, Minn. where she grew up. At an early age she came to know the Lord as her Savior. Eva graduated from Staples High School in 1935, received her nurses training at Minneapolis, and did private nursing for several years. On November 6, 1941, she was united in marriage to William "Bill" Scheidecker at Minneapolis. They moved to Brownsville, Texas where he was stationed in the Army. Upon Bill's discharge they farmed near Nashua, moved to a farm near Greene for 5 years and then in March of 1955 purchased a farm east of Greene. Here they raised their family of six children. She was in fellowship with the Charles City Assembly. Eva will always be remembered as a devoted mother who provided for her family in every way possible, always putting their needs first. Fond memories center on her love and concern, singing hymns as she worked, cooking, gardening, canning, sewing and always placing family first.

Living family members include three daughters and their husbands, Mary and Allan Whiteside of Charles City, Dorothy and David Kasper of Brookville, Pa., and Celia and Brian Prigge of St. Cloud, Minn.; and three sons and their wives, William and Martha Scheidecker of Hampton, Robert and Pauline Scheidecker of Clarksville, and James and Jennifer Scheidecker of Anoka, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and two sisters, Clarabelle Canner of Clearwater, Fla., and Twylla and her husband John Grover of Portland, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill in 1975; a brother George Smiley; and two sisters, Gladys Ducommun and Francis Grant.

Ivan Mincks

Ivan Mincks, 85, of Charles City, died Friday, January 7, 2005, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Ivan Mincks will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Ivan LaVerne Mincks was born October 14, 1919, in Ft. Atkinson, the son of Lycurgus and Arabella (Perkins) Mincks. He graduated from the Calmar High School.Ivan served in the United States Navy during World War II. On October 16, 1940, he was united in marriage to Vida Jacobson in Decorah. Vida died on April 15, 1984. Ivan then married Mary Klampe on August 11, 1984. Mary died on January 2, 2004. During his working career he was an ice man for Ray Waggoner, then a security guard at the Oliver Corporation and Sara Lee. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and the American Legion where he had served as commander. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and woodworking. Ivan also worked with cross stitch and will be remembered for all of the crosses that he made and gave away.

Living family members include four children; Mike Mincks of Webster City, Lanny (Gloria) Mincks of Charles City, Jay Mincks of Charles City and Linda (Ed) Logan of Charles City; five grandchildren, Leo Mincks, Marie Mincks, Misty Tucker, Daniel Logan and Patrick Logan; four great grandchildren; six step daughters; and two brothers, Carrol Mincks of Calmar and Cecil Mincks of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Brian Logan and Malinda Mincks; seven brothers and a sister.

Irene B. Kittelson

Irene B. Kittelson, 84, of #98 North Cedar Terrace, Charles City, IA, died Friday evening (January 7, 2005) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Tuesday (January 11, 2005) at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with Rev. A.C. Wegner officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens Cemetery, Charles City.

Irene Bessie Kittelson was born March 10, 1920, in Clermont, IA to William Franklin and Bessie Anna (Udson) Sullivan. She was the only child born to her parents. Irene attended school in Clermont, IA. On August 19, 1937 Irene was united in marriage to Orlando Kenneth Kittelson in Clermont, IA. The couple had lived in Earlville, IA before making their home in Charles City in 1948. Irene was a loving and devoted wife, a nurturing mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. Family was foremost important to her and time spent with family and friends were special moments for her. Irene had been a wonderful homemaker. Some of Irene's activities and interests included crocheting, traveling, playing cards and board games, especially the game of "Aggravation". Irene welcomed people into her life and was very accepting of all who knew her. She will be remembered as a good counselor, listening to people with a sincere and caring ear and most notably always being there for people. Irene's children recall that she was the "gypsy" in the family and was always on the go and never adhered to a set time frame or schedule. She enjoyed having and going to rummage sales. Irene attended the Faith Bible Chapel in Charles City. Irene will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her three children, Doris M. (Walter) Nurre of Cedar Rapids, IA; Mary Ann (Gary) Tolliver of Alta Vista, IA and William "Bill" O. (Jean Ann) Kittelson of Plaistow, N.H.; twenty grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren and fifteen great great grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Orlando K. Kittelson on May 31, 1978; two sons, Larry L. Kittelson in 1977 and Robert O. Kittelson in 2000 and her parents.

Evelyn Marrs, 84, of Neosho, Mo., died on Monday, January 10, 2005, at an Anderson, Mo., nursing home after an illness of several months. Evelyn Ellen Watkins was born August 6, 1920, in Gettysburg, South Dakota, to Claude and Jennie (Nelson) Watkins. She was raised and educated in Charles City. She was united in marriage to Bill Edwin Marrs on June 28, 1949, in Waseca Minn.

Mrs. Marrs moved to Neosho over twenty years ago; she had previously lived in Cassville, MO and in the state of Minnesota. She was a homemaker and a member of the Neosho United Methodist Church.

Living family members include one son, Jerold 'Jerry' Marrs of Neosho; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother, Gerald 'Jerry' Watkins of Charles City; and one sister, Beverly Jacobs of Ionia.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Bill on August 20, 1998.

NORA SPRINGS - Edna P. Miller, 79, of 907 W. Congress Street, Nora Springs, formerly of Rudd, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Edna Pearl (Hines) Miller was born on July 03, 1925, in Borgess, Ill., the daughter of Edward and Lena Pearl (Lee) Hines. She graduated from Joy High School, in Joy, Ill. After high school, Edna lived in Alaska and Oklahoma. Edna then moved to Illinois, and worked at Jenkins Truckline in Moline, Ill., as a secretary. While working at Jenkins Truckline, her son John introduced her to her future husband Harold. On December 14, 1957, Edna married Harrold Miller in Lamont, Iowa. Later in life, Edna worked at Diamond Transportation, Sears, and sold Tupperware, where she earned the nickname the 'Tupperware Lady.'

She enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting, traveling, going out to eat with Harold, and making her famous baked beans.

She was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church in Rudd.

Edna is survived by her husband, Harold Miller, Rudd, Iowa; her three children, John (Ann) O'Donnell of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Maureen (Curtis) Schroeder of Guttenberg, Iowa; and Mary (Kent) Ullmann of Titonka, Iowa. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Candace Davenport, Kathy Ann O'Donnell, Matthew (Tammy) O'Donnell, and Michael O'Donnell of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Jessica (Kevin) Wallace of Dubuque, Iowa; Joshua (Barbie) Steere of New Hartford, Iowa; Jonathan Claycamp of Guttenberg, Iowa; Allison, Thomas, Emily, Chad Ullmann of Titonka; five great-grandchildren, Christopher and Adam Davenport, Danielle and Courtney O'Donnell, and Brady Steere; several special nieces and nephews; one sister, Laura Rieverts, Hillsdale, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Edith Shepard, Bella Vista, Ark. and Pat Hines, Aurora, Colo.; and one brother-in-law, Clair Reiling, Winthrop, Iowa.

Marilyn Elaine Van Horn

ANKENY, Iowa - Marilyn Van Horn passed away on Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Visitation will be in Ankeny on Friday, January 14, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 914 NW Ash Dr., from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, January 15, in Charles City at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St., at 1 p.m. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the services. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Marilyn was born on January 7, 1930, in Waverly, Iowa to Edwin and Clara Kohagen. She married Lloyd Van Horn in 1948 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. They lived in Charles City where they raised their family. Her family and friends were her treasure, and she believed she was a richly blessed woman. Marilyn moved to Ankeny in 1994 where she worked at East Elementary in food service, and built a life centered around her friends and family. It was at East Elementary where she found yet another treasure in the staff and students that she grew to love, and who in turn loved her deeply.

Marilyn joyfully spent most of her time with her family, but she also enjoyed watching sports---most passionately the Hawkeyes, the Cubs, and the Vikings. Marilyn sewed beautifully and volunteered her time by making clothes for Floyd County Breast Cancer Bears, clothing more than 100 bears for gifting to cancer survivors.

She is survived by her son Doug (Jan) Van Horn of Blue Mounds, Wisc., and their children Teresa and Jason (Liz); daughter Cheryl (Rod) Spieker of Ankeny, and their children Michael (Julie), and Michelle; son Brad (Tammy) of Minneapolis, and their children Steve (Jamie), Angie (Doug) Croll, and Sara; daughter Andi (Brian) Donaghy of Ankeny, and their children Christi, Molly and Amy; and sister Ardath Kreimeyer. Marilyn was also the proud great-grandmother to Aibree Vanessa Spieker, daughter of Mike and Julie, and Carter Bradley Van Horn, son of Steve and Jamie.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd and granddaughter Vanessa Spieker.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the exceptional care and love given to Marilyn by the Mercy Hospice staff and volunteers.

C.R. "Red" Adams

Funeral services for Claire Russell "Red" Adams, 71, of 1702 Ohio Avenue, Charles City, will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005, at the Marble Rock Community Center, with Pastor Dave Werges of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock with Military Rites conducted by Stroud Gates Post 387, American Legion of Marble Rock.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, January 14, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock. Visitation will continue at the Community Center one hour before services.

Claire Russell Adams was born February 21, 1933, in Aureola, Union Township, Floyd County, a son of Clarence Clifford and Marie Catherine (Bohl) Adams, and died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home.

He received his education in the Marble Rock Public Schools graduating in 1950. Red was instrumental in helping the Marble Rockets advance to the 1950 State Sub Finals in 1950. He lettered in Baseball in High School and and college. He attended Upper Iowa at Fayette and N.E. Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville where he received his B.A. in 1958 and his M.A. in 1963. He later earned his Sixth Year Specialist Degree in 1976.

On February 10, 1953, he was inducted into the United States Army where he served with the Srvc. Btry 246th Field Artillery as a cook. He was honorably discharged February 9, 1955. Following his discharge he worked for Decker Bros Meat Packing Plant in Mason City. He taught schools in Shelbyville, Mo., Cylinder, and Riceville. He served as Principal of Schools at Dows (1976-1979) Supt., Elementary Principal at Thompson (1979-1996) Supt. at Lakota, (1990-1992) and Supt at Buffalo Center (1996-1997).

He was united in marriage to Mary Louise Cleveland on September 7, 1956, at the Little Brown Church at Nashua.To this union was born six children.

Red's interests included fishing, hunting, and bowling. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He loved to tease them terribly, and was always willing to take them to the ball games. He was a life member of the Iowa State Education Association and the National Education Association. He was a member of American Legion Post 409 of Crystal Lake and a member of Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1328 in Mason City.

Living family members include his loving wife of 48 years, Mary of Charles City, two daughters: Shari Lynn (Greg) Knopf of Clear Lake, Saundra Lou (Chad) Gifford of Burt; four sons: Steven (Brenda) Adams of Palatine, Ill., Stanton Adams of Thompson, Shawn (Peggy) Adams and Scott Adams all of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren, one sister: Fern Chambers of Mason City. Also surviving include several brothers and sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Eugene Adams (1934), a brother-in-law: Roy Chambers, and a sister-in-law: Jane Testroet.

Ruth M. Hartwell

GREENE - Ruth M. Hartwell, 89, of Charles City passed away Friday afternoon, January 14, 2005 at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery at Nora Springs. Visitation will be Monday from 5p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Ruth is survived by on son, Jerry ( Sue) Hartwell of Charles City; two daughters: Joan Strickler of Greene and Janet (Charles) Bonzer of Charles City; one brother, Norris ãJimä (Estelle) Treloar of Clear Lake; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland ãSkipä Hartwell, June 14, 1997; her parents; two brothers: Howard and Ralph Treloar; one sister, Elsie Chenoweth; a son-in-law, Robert Strickler.

Ruth Marie Hartwell was born August 22, 1915 on a farm north of Nora Springs, the daughter of Ellsworth and Ada Blanche (Reed) Treloar. She attended Nora Springs High School where she was active in sports and graduated in 1932.

She was united in marriage to Leland Hartwell on March 4, 1933 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Nora springs un til 1951 when they moved to Charles City. Ruth remained in her home until July of 2004, when due to failing health she became a resident of Community Nursing Home in Clarksville. She worked part-time for Iowa Title and Realty Company and was a day care provider at Central School Nursery.

Ruth was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and active in circle. She was a long-time member of Eastern Star. She will be remembered as a fun loving and energetic mother and grandmother and for her fantastic brownies.


Vincent R. Schwickerath

NORTH WASHINGTON -- Vincent R. Schwickerath, 79, of North Washington, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington with Msgr. John Hemann celebrating the Mass.

Internment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, North Washington.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary, 7 p.m. scripture service and 7:30 p.m. video memorial tribute. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday.

Vincent is survived by his three sons, Wayne Schwickerath of Ames, Gary (Deb) Schwickerath of New Hampton, and Duane (Laura) Schwickerath of Alta Vista; two daughters, Jane (Rick) Haeflinger of Rochester, Minn., and Joanne (Mike) Soubrada of Ostrander, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother Reynold (Corrine) Schwickerath of New Hampton; and sister Mary Ries of Elma.


Glen Krogstad

OSAGE - Glen Krogstad, age 83, of Osage, died Saturday, January 15, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery with Military Honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278.

Rena Folkerts

LAKE BENTON, Minn. -- Rena Folkerts, 79, of Lake Benton, Minn., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at her home in Lake Benton. Funeral service was Monday, Jan. 17 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Lake Benton. Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 16, 3-7 p.m. at the church, with prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation continued Monday at the church one hour prior to the service.

Rena Folkerts was born to Dick and Jennie (Faber) Kas on Nov. 17, 1925, in Sioux County near Orange City, Iowa. She was baptized at the Christian Reformed Church. She moved with her family to the Holland, Minn., area as a child where she attended country school at District 72 in Fountain Prairie Township. On Jan. 10, 1944, she married Alfred Folkerts at Holland. Their union was blessed with four daughters and 38 years of life together. Rena and Alfred lived in the area of Edgerton and Woodstock, Minn. In 1960, they moved to a farm northwest of Lake Benton, Minn., where they worked and raised their children. The year following Alfred's death on Dec. 14, 1982, Rena moved to Lake Benton, but she continued to manage the farm until shortly before her death. She passed away at her Lake Benton home surrounded by her children on Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the age of 79 years, one month and 28 days, as the result of cancer.

RACINE, Wisc. - Bernadine R. (Kilby) Beasley, 71, passed away at her residence on Wednesday, January 19, 2005, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services for Bernadine will be held at First United Methodist Church, 745 Main St., on Monday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Harvey Delery officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 23, from 4 until 7 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services. Bernadine was born in Jefferson, Minn., on Dec. 9, 1933, to Raymond and Vivian (Darling) Kilby. Bernadine married Ronald L. Beasley. He preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1992.

Survivors include: her children Pamela Nardi (fianc/' Dan) of Racine, Rick (Diane) Yegge of Marinette, Paula (Randy) Kressig of Racine, Teri (Mark) Bazan of Wisconsin Dells and Ronald L. (Mary) Beasley, Jr. of Grand Marsh; grandchildren: Lisa, Christi, Ricky, Jr., Heather, Jerod, Robbie, Randy Paul, Amy, Andrea, Ronald, III, and Dakota; nine great-grandchildren; brothers Kenneth (Merrial) Kilby and Duane (Linda) Kilby of Charles City; sisters Linda (Duane) Schroeder and Nancy (Gary) Hedrick; and sister-in-law, Pat Kilby of Nashua. Bernadine is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Dick and Ron.

Charles W. 'Til' Thelen

FORT WORTH, Texas - Charles W. 'Til' Thelen, 85, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, in Fort Worth. A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ, 4201 Trail Lake Dr., Fort Worth, Texas 76109.

Charles W. "Til" Thelen was born in Charles City on June 15, 1919 to Fred and Mabel Thelen. He came to Fort Worth in 1942 to work as a technical writer and editor for Consolidated Aircraft (now Lockheed). He retired from General Dynamics in 1976. He was a member and past president of the National Society of Technical Writers and Publishers. Til belonged to Squaw Creek Golf Club and was a long time member of the First Congregational Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers: Jim, Dale, Ward, Morris, Eldon and Almon. He is survived by Letitia Fleming Thelen, his wife of 61 years; daughter Linda Bavousett of Fort Worth; son Gregory of Austin; grandchildren Sean and Erin and their mother Kathleen Thelen of Austin; many nieces, nephews and friends, who will miss his gentle nature and sense of humor.

Evelyn Marie Sheppard Hall was born February 9, 1932, at Mason City, the daughter of William and Jenny (Hammer) Sheppard. She received her education at Mason City and Hampton. On March 22, 1952, she was united in marriage to Elmer Hall at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Evelyn worked at Club Iowa, the country club in Charles City, Lamplighter Motel and as a Nurse Aide. Evelynâs interests included collecting memorabilia of various kinds and working outside in her flower garden. She also enjoyed caring for her cats

Living family members include her husband, Elmer Hall of Charles City; three sons, William "Bill" Hall and Anthony "Tony" Hall both of Charles City, and Dennis Boyer of Minnesota; a niece, whom she raised, Lois Sheppard of Mason City; and a sister, Jenny Boggess of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Katharina "Kathy" Friedsam

Katharina "Kathy" Friedsam, 94, of Charles City, was received to glory on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Kathy Friedsam will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2005, at the Gospel Lighthouse in Floyd. Pastor Paul Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Katharina Schmahl Friedsam was born January 14, 1911, at Nova Pazova, Yugoslavia, the daughter of Heinrich and Magdalena (Klaus) Schmahl. She received her education in Belgrad, Yugoslavia. After finishing school, she took two years of dressmaking as an apprentice. Subsequently she moved to Austria, close to Linz, where she spent five years in a Lutheran convent as a deaconess. Kathy worked with children, orphans, and cared for the elderly. She then returned to Yugoslavia and worked at a hospital in Belgrad. Kathy received her diploma as a midwife and worked in this capacity for ten years. World War II ended her work. For two years she was in a concentration camp in Yugoslavia. She escaped from the concentration camp with her mother and fled to Austria. On December 10, 1950, she was united in marriage to Wilhelm Friedsam at Salzburg, Austria. In 1955, through the sponsorship of Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Salsbury and the First Baptist Church of Charles City, it was made possible for them to come to Charles City. They lived with Dr. and Mrs. Salsbury for three years before moving to a home of their own. Kathy worked as a housekeeper, seamstress and as a Nurse Aide at the Salsbury Baptist Home. She was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse and YMCA Fountain of Youth. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting and crocheting.

Close relatives treasuring her memory are her brother, John Schmaehl of Kamiah, ID; a niece Brigitte (Roland) Philipp of Osage; a nephew, Harty (Marjorie) Schmaehl of Kamiah, ID; and several great and great great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on November 28, 2003; a sister; a brother; and one great nephew.

Robert Biddle, 73, of Charles City died Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Robert Earl Biddle was born March 30, 1931, at Newman, IL, the son of Robert and Gladys (Lamb) Biddle. He graduated from the Shelbyville High School, Shelbyville, IL, in 1949. In June of 1950, he married Shirley Bryson. They later divorced. On May 6, 1984, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Weigel at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Robert started working for the Oliver Corporation in 1949 at Shelbyville, IL and was then transferred to the White Farm Corporation in Charles City where he worked as a Senior Industrial Engineer until it closed in 1993. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #1294 in Shelbyville, IL since 1952. Robertâs interests included NASCAR, golf and collecting model Oliver tractors.

Living family members include his wife, Cheryl of Charles City; five children, David (Christy) Biddle of Shelbyville, IL, Teri Taylor and Amy Biddle both of Springfield, IL, Scott Ross of Osage, and Brian Ross of Charles City; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; his mother, Gladys Biddle of Springfield, IL; a brother, Frank Biddle of Shelbyville, IL; a sister, Francis Williams of Springfield, IL; and his dog and special companion, Buster Brown Biddle.

He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter, Tina Ross.

Carma June Palmer was born June 22, 1914 in Charles City, the daughter of Howard and Alice (Sweasy) Smith. Carma was lifelong resident of Charles City. She had been a homemaker throughout her life. On Feb. 21, 1941, Carma was united in marriage to Bernard D. Palmer in Charles City, IA.

Carma's paramount concern and greatest joy in life was sharing in and spending time with her family. Her interests and leisure activities included being a very competitive card player. The card games played were bridge, euchre and 500. Bernard recalls that the couple liked spending their time together dancing and Carma was a wonderful dancer. She liked nature, feeding the birds and fishing. Her family states that she was the 'best' cook in the county and most famous for the variety of pies that she baked. She is described as a woman who was kind, cheerful and funny. Carma was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the St. Anthony's Church Circle and several different bridge groups.

Grateful for having had the privilege in sharing in Carma's life are her loving husband of almost 64 years, Bernard of Charles City; four children, Alan (Dee) Hobert of Yuma, Ariz.; Kent (Nancy) Hobert of Martinez, Calif.; Gary (Sue) Palmer of Washington, D.C., and Tom (Eliana) Palmer of Lexington, Ky.; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two sisters, Mavis (Andy) Miller of Des Moines and Alice May Hull of Charles City; three brothers, B. J. Smith of Minneapolis, Minn.; Larry (Marian) Smith of Charles City and Terry (G. Ann) Smith of St. Charles.

Carma was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Lyle 'Bud' Smith, Roger Smith and Bobby Smith.

Shirley K. Day

IONIA - Shirley K. Day, 68, of Ionia passed away Monday morning, Jan. 24, 2005, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City of complications of cancer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at St. John Lutheran Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery both in Nashua. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.Shirley Katherine Day was born April 23, 1936, in Ionia, Iowa, the daughter of John and Bertha (Jansen) Kraft. She was raised in Ionia and graduated as Valedictorian from Ionia High School in 1953, where she enjoyed playing basketball and softball and was a baton twirler and flag girl. She won regional competitions in both.

She was married to Jack Day on Nov. 6, 1955. They were later divorced. She lived in Riceville, Dike, Nashua and Ionia. While living in Dike, she attended Hawkeye Community College, graduating as a registered nurse. Shirley was employed as an RN at the Chautauqua Guest Homes and Sunrise Guest Home in Fredericksburg until failing health forced her to retire in 2004.

Shirley will be remembered as a good cook, beautiful seamstress and loved to play bingo. She was a loving mother and grandmother and also a kind and caring nurse and friend.

Shirley is survived by two sons: Derek of Ionia and Jon (Angie) of Charles City; six daughters: Terri (Wes) Wadey of Nashua, Carrie (Alan) DeBerg of Dike, Angie (Randy) Dieken of Dike, Jill (Mike) Tidman of Boundurant, Kathy Day-Bobb of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Michelle (Steve) Bartling of Ackley; 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild; two sisters: Beverly (Wallace) Winkie of Belle Plaine and Helen Knapp of Charles City; three brothers: Marvin (Donna) Kraft of Waverly, Richard (Vera) Kraft of Clarksville and Kenneth (Lori) Kraft of Ionia; one sister-in-law: Elda Kraft of Dixon. Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant daughters: Judith and Sharon; one sister, Eileen; one brother, John Kraft.


Adelaide Larson

NORA SPRINGS - Adelaide Leonora Wamstad Larson, age 87, of Nora Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Donovan entered the Army Air Corps on May 4, 1943. He served his country during WWII, doing three tours of duty overseas. He received a Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Croix De Guerre Belgian and European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal. Mr. Hansen was wounded in action April 16, 1945, but returned to active duty immediately, being honorably discharged on Dec. 1, 1945.Donovan returned to Sioux Fall, S.D., after discharge working for the Hormel Company and owned an excavating company. Mr. Hansen moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in the early 1950's, he bought a Motel and went to work for J.J. Land Clearing. Donovan went to work for the City of St. Petersburg in the early 1960's. Donovan retired from the City of St. Petersburg in the mid 1980's.

When on a visit back to Iowa, Mr. Hansen met Mabel Edna (Howe) Jung. They married on Oct. 15, 1971. They made their home in St. Petersburg, Florida. Donovan and Mabel moved back to Charles City in 1998.

Donovan loved to hunt in his younger years, he also loved to fish, to travel, to play cards-especially canasta. Donovan also loved to visit with his family and tend to his fruit trees. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, VFW and the American Legion.

Those left to cherish his memory: his wife, Mabel, Charles City; a daughter, Mavis Sullivan, Clifton, Virginia; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Jung, Clear Lake, Iowa; five grandsons, Michael (Dora) Sullivan, Stephen (Cindy) Sullivan, Daniel (Jenny) Sullivan, Mark (Vicky) Jung, Matt Jung, two granddaughters, Kathryn Sullivan- Parker and Susan Jung and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Four brothers, Charles (Beverly) Hibner, Charles City; Don (Doris) Hibner, Charles City; Leo (Rose) Hibner, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Duane (Joanne) Hibner, Ducktown, Tenn.; two sisters, Marian Hahn, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Fern (Vern) Kramer, Charles City; and one sister-in-law, Esther Brunner, Charles City, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hansen was proceeded in death by his parents, son, Robert Jung, son-in-law, Miles Sullivan, sister-in-law, Romona Hibner and a brother-in-law, Myron Hahn.

Those left to cherish his memory: his wife, Mabel, Charles City; a daughter, Mavis Sullivan, Clifton, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Jung, Clear Lake; five grandsons: Michael (Dora) Sullivan, Stephen (Cindy) Sullivan, Daniel (Jenny) Sullivan, Mark (Vicky) Jung, Matt Jung; two granddaughters: Kathryn Sullivan-Parker and Susan Jung; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Four brothers: Charles (Beverly) Hibner, Charles City; Don (Doris) Hibner, Charles City; Leo (Rose) Hibner, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Duane (Joanne) Hibner, Ducktown, Tenn.; two sisters, Marian Hahn, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Fern (Vern) Kramer, Charles City; and two sisters-in-law, Esther Brunner, Charles City, and Bernadine Howe of Rockford, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hansen was proceeded in death by his parents; son, Robert Jung; son-in-law, Miles Sullivan; sister-in-law, Romona Hibner; and a brother-in-law, Myron Hahn.

Alice Bluhm

Alice Bluhm, 80, a resident of the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with Pastor Gale Richards of the United Church of Christ in Colwell officiating. Interment will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens Cemetery, Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. today at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, Charles City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Saturday. Alice (Oudekerk) Bluhm was born Oct. 8, 1924, in rural Nashua, Iowa, the daughter of Koert, Sr. and Alice (Dieterman) Oudekerk. On Sept. 1, 1944, Alice was united in marriage to Allan Henry Bluhm in Charles City. Alice was a lifelong resident of Floyd County. Alice's stay at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home was a memorable one. She liked to heckle the staff and was referred to by the staff as "trouble." She will be remembered as a very strong-willed lady. When they (the staff) would see her walking the halls they would affectionately say "here comes trouble." Alice was a hard worker; she was employed at the Sherman Nursery in Charles City where she had worked for many years. Alice never learned to drive and you would often see her riding her bike throughout town. As a girl she enjoyed special times with her family and in her married life wonderful fishing trips with her husband Allan. Alice enjoyed the company of her pal and Pomeranian dog, "Buttons".

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her sister, Grace (Roy) Ahart of Rockwell; two sisters-in-law, Betty Oudekerk and Avis (Harold) Oudekerk, all of Charles City; two brothers-in-law, Donald (Judy) Bluhm of Charles City and Roger (Phyllis) Bluhm of Waverly and also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Alice in death are her husband Allan Henry Bluhm on May 11, 1981; two sisters, Anna Oudekerk and Henrietta Oudekerk; three brothers, Harm (Glendora) Oudekerk, George (Ruby) Oudekerk and Koert Oudekerk, Jr.

Doris Fitch

Doris Fitch, 85, of Charles City, died Friday, January 28, 2005, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services for Doris Fitch will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Rev. Paul Wilcox, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue at the funeral home an hour prior to the service.

Doris Elizabeth Eggleston was born March 30, 1919 in Black Hawk County to Milo A. and Eva (Fuller) Eggleston. She was raised in Waverly and graduated from Waverly High School. She was united in marriage to Fred W. Fitch on August 28, 1940, in Charles City. The couple lived in Minnesota, Waverly, and Charles City. Doris enjoyed crocheting and knitting and was an avid collector of Teddy Bears and coffee cups. She loved little children and especially spending time with her granddaughter and neighbors.

Living family members include her son and his wife, Edwin and Hazel Fitch; and one granddaughter and her husband, Louise and Steven Tatum, all of Marshalltown; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Fred L. Fitch in October 2004; and 12 brothers and sisters.
