Richard A. Engleman

Richard A. Engleman, 70, of Mason City, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, surrounded by his family at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 4th St. S.E., in Mason City. Richard will be cremated following the service. A visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 5, from 5-8 p.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E., in Mason City. Stories, thoughts and condolences may be shared with the family on the funeral home website at www.Fullertonfh.com. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Richard was born on Nov. 17, 1939 in Mason City, the son of Emmon and Hazel (Cooper) Engleman. He lived his entire life in Mason City. Richard had a long career working for the City of Mason City as an arborist for the street department. He enjoyed his role as mentor while working for the city, taking in the younger guys and showing them the ropes. He was united in marriage to Karen Ryan on June 1, 1963. The couple was married for 42 years before her passing in October of 2005. Richard also served his country in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1960. 

Richard loved the outdoors, and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and archery. He also enjoyed working on cars in his garage, and had a great love of vintage vehicles. In his free time, you could usually find him shooting pool at the Sidewinder, where he enjoyed the company of his many, many good friends. Most of all, Richard loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He had tremendous pride in his heritage and in his family.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Allan Engleman (Tracey Gorman) of Minneapolis, Scott (Deb) Engleman of Dubuque, and Vickie (Matt) VanHeel of Mason City; grandchildren, Jenna and Becca Engleman, Rachael, Jessica and Joanna Engleman, and Zach, Brock and Sydnie Thompson; brothers, Bob and Jack Engleman; and sisters, Mary Rethamel and Donna Knudson.

Mary Lou (Mann) Trainer

KILLEEN, Texas — Mary Lou (Mann) Trainer, 70, of Killeen, Texas, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at her home after a short battle with lung cancer. Mary will be cremated and have her ashes scattered over the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque, N.M., at a later time.

Mary Lou Woodworth was born Sept. 10, 1939, to Hubert and Marie (Springer) Woodworth. She lived in Charles City and married Charles Trainer on Jan. 4, 1964. They were later divorced. In Charles City, Mary worked at Ridgeway grocery and Hovey’s gas station. She later moved to Albuquerque, where she worked at a nursing home facility. After her retirement she moved to Killeen to be closer to her son and his family.

Mary enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bingo, shopping at the dollar store and going to the casino.

She is survived by her sons, Joe and Irene Trainer, of Killeen, Texas and John (Meisha) Trainer of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters Randi and Gary Ritz of Chandler, Ariz., and Valerie Trainer (Brian Byers) of Charles City; grandchildren Paul (Jen) Throndson,  Emmit (Sade) Alsup, Amanda Trainer, Caelan and Tristen Christensen and Johnathon, Alex and Sasha Trainer; great-grandchildren Arianna Alsup and Ella Rose Throndson; three brothers, Gary (Sandy) Woodworth of Charles City, Richard Woodworth and Ralph Woodworth of Minnesota; and sisters Carolyn Miller and Diane (Bob) Reams, all of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Alberta Onken and brother Robert Woodworth.

OSAGE — Hilda L. LaCoste, 92, of Osage, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage, due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Hilda was born Feb. 5, 1917, near Osage, the daughter of Ferdinand and Caroline (Troge) Muller. She graduated from Osage High School in 1935, and attended Iowa State Teachers College. From 1937 to 1943, Hilda was a country school teacher. She married Donald LaCoste on March 18, 1943, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, southwest of Osage. Hilda was a homemaker and farmed with Donald five miles north of Floyd. In 1994, she moved to Osage. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Hilda enjoyed gardening, reading, spending time with family, and volunteering at church.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8, at the Faith Lutheran Home, 914 Davidson Dr. in Osage, with Rev. Bruce Kaltwasser officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, rural Osage. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Faith Lutheran Home or Iowa Hospice.

Hilda is survived by her children: Carolyn Walk of Rochester, Minn., John (Velda) LaCoste of Osage and Donna Hawkinson of Rochester, Minn.; six grandchildren: Daren, Jim and Mark Walk, Jennifer Bauer, Brad LaCoste and Matthew Hawkinson; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; sister, Nina Muller; brothers, Glenn and Loren Muller; and son-in-law, Duane Walk.

Kenneth Dugan, 61, of Charles City, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Kenneth Dugan will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday.

Kenneth Dean Dugan was born Nov. 27, 1948, in Floyd County, the son of Ray and Dorothy (Schmidtke) Dugan. In infancy, Kenneth contracted an illness that left him permanently and profoundly disabled. Over the years he was cared for by his loving family and then at care facilities, including the last 23 years at Comprehensive Systems Burling House in Charles City. Over those years the staff became his second family and the outstanding care they gave will always be remembered and appreciated.

Living family members include a sister, Pam (Duane) Davenport of Charles City; two brothers, Mike (Sandra) Dugan of Charles City and Ronnie (Jeleen) Dugan of Floyd; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Lona Dugan.

Eugene ‘Gene’ Parks

Eugene “Gene” Parks, 74, of Charles City, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at his residence.

Funeral services for Gene Parks will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Bachman of the First Wesleyan Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Eugene Parks was born March 16, 1935, at Alexander, the son of Wesley and Marjorie (Cross) Parks. He attended school at Hampton and graduated from Hamilton Business College. Gene served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. On March 1, 1957, he was united in marriage to Marlys Howell at Belmond. Over the years he worked as an accountant and then as a circulation manager for the Des Moines Register. They moved to Charles City in 1963 where he worked as circulation manager for the Charles City Press. In 1966 he joined with his brothers in Parks Construction, building apartments and residential housing in Hampton and Charles City. Gene purchased the Union 76 gas station in 1977 and remodeled it into the first convenience store in Charles City and then expanded to several convenience stores in the area. He also became a marketer for Union 76 petroleum products. He was a member of the American Legion. Gene will always be remembered as a person who enjoyed his work and doing his very best at everything. He always looked forward to sharing his love and life with his family.

 
Living family members include his wife, Marlys Parks of Charles City; four children: Pamela (Byron) Lessin of Charles City, Perry (Kathy) Parks of Belmond, Scott (Angela) Parks of Charles City and Jerry (Katherine) Parks of Las Vegas, Nev.; 13 grandchildren: Tony and Sara Lessin, Gabby, Alex, Andrew (Becky), Hannah, Justin, Jordon, Brynn, Brandon, Jeridan, Maisy and Jackson Parks; a great-granddaughter, Alivia Parks; three brothers: Don Parks of Hampton, Stan Parks of Des Moines, and Wesley (Pauline) Parks of Sheffield; and a sister, Maryanne Marchellino of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Bernard Higgins and Morris Parks.

Memorials may be directed to the family for an educational scholarship to be established later.

Frances M. ‘Fran’ Shanno

NEW HAMPTON — Frances M. “Fran” Shannon, 82, of New Hampton, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at Holy Family Parish — St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton.

Frances M. “Fran” Shannon was born in Elma on June 25, 1927, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Roche) Riley. She attended Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma graduating in 1945. Fran was united in marriage to Paul Shannon on Nov. 10, 1947, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in St. Cecelia. The couple lived in New Hampton and to this union four children were born. Fran was employed at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the former Latours Apparel in New Hampton, and the Canteen Services at Sara Lee for 18 years. Paul died on May 17, 2001 at the age of 77.

 
Fran enjoyed baking for her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her girlfriends in the Birthday Club. She was a member of Holy Family Rosary Society and Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary.

Survivors include three sons: Terry (Vonnie) Shannon of New Hampton, Tom (Cindy) Shannon of Rochester, Minn., and Steve (Jean) Shannon of Charles City; one daughter, Maureen (Brad) Northrup of Hastings, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lee (Veronica) Riley of Charles City; a brother-in-law, Bob Boos of New Hampton; and two sister-in-laws Jean Shannon of New Hampton and Marge (Gerald) Gansen of Elma.

Lovila Hurlbut

Lovila Hurlbut, 77, a resident of Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, formerly of Nashua and Oelwein, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until service time at the church on Saturday.

Lovila was born Nov. 1, 1932, the daughter of Oliver and Gladys (Larson) Christophersen in McGregor. She married Wallace Tucker on June 20, 1953. The couple later divorced. On Aug. 31, 1973, she was united in marriage to Jack Hurlbut in Oelwein. The couple resided in Nashua. Jack died on May 31, 1986.

Lovila worked in the libraries of the Oelwein school system, did home healthcare for a number of years and did clerical work for Richard E.B. Shaw, a local attorney. She also enjoyed working at the New Home Café, Mables Cupboard and other cafés in the area. Lovila also worked at Montgomery Ward as an escrow clerk in Faribault, Minn., and Rice Lake, Wis.

 
Lovila enjoyed playing cards, especially Skip Bo and 500. Many fishing trips were had with Jack, both from the boat and on the ice. Her collection of tea pots once exceeded 400 pieces although she did not enjoy tea as a beverage. She loved to visit and spend time with her family and friends.

Lovila is survived by her son, Jason Hurlbut and his wife Marta of Onalaska, Wis.; daughter-in-law, Jane Tucker of Sumner; five grandchildren: Aaron Tucker of Chicago, Ill., Ryan (Kayla) Tucker of Denver, Amy Tucker of Waverly, Amanda Satterfield of Georgia and Olaf Christophersen of Onalaska; one great-grandchild, Colby Tucker of Denver; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jack; daughter Cindy Satterfield; son Donald Tucker; brothers Bud and Larry Christophersen; a sister, Lou Ann Roberts; and a brother-in-law, Orville Roberts.

Albert ‘Whitey’ Schultz

ROCKFORD— Albert “Whitey” Schultz, 86, formerly of Rockford, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 11:00 a.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E. in Mason City. Pastor Jim Turner of the Shell Rock First United Methodist Church will officiate. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 11 from 4-7 p.m. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs. Whitey was born on August 16, 1923 in Stillwater, Okla., the son of Ernest and Dorothy (Schwade) Schultz. His family moved to Nora Springs when he was very young. Whitey graduated from Nora Springs and attended a semester of college at Upper Iowa University, before being drafted into the Army during World War II. He served for 27 months in the South Pacific, receiving a Bronze Star for his part in the Liberation of Luzon. Whitey was wounded during his serivice in the Pacific Islands. After returning home from the war, he was united in marriage to Shirley Symes on April 6, 1947. The couple made their home in Nora Springs. Shirley passed away in December of 1947. Whitey then met LaVon Schrage Brown and they were married on Nov. 26, 1948. He would also begin his career with Lehigh Portland Cement in 1948, where he would be employed for nearly 30 years. He was a repairman, and also served as the President for the Cement, Lime and Gypsum Local Union 106 and was at one time the Regional Vice President for the union. Whitey and his family moved to an acreage in Rockford in 1959, where he operated a farm. LaVon passed away in February of 2003.

Whitey was very proud to his role in the NIAD Labor Counicl and his role in the Clear Lake Labor Day Dance and the scholarship program for deserving high school students. He was very active in his union, and his service earned him the honor of being in the Union Hall of Fame AFL-CIO. Throughout his entire life, Whitey developed into a master storyteller, always on the lookout for someone to tell his stories to. In his later years, he enjoyed playing cards and following the Women’s Pool League.

Whitey will be loved and missed by his many friends and family. Those left to honor his memory include his children, Virginia Brown of Charles City, Virgil (Claudia) Brown of New Concord, NC, Larry Schultz of Waverly, Dan (Sue) Schultz of Stillwater, MN, Mark (Beth) Schultz of Gales Ferry, CT, Duane (Jane) Schultz of Iowa Falls, Peggy Cheney of Indianola, and Ben (Valerie) Schultz of Des Moines; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Irma Peterson; and brother, Fred Schultz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Shirley and LaVon; grandson, Doug Brown; sisters, Rosie Lee and Bertha Swartwood; and brother, Herman Schultz.


Lawrence ‘Bud’ Lomison

Lawrence “Bud” Lomison, 91, of Charles City, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Bud Lomison will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Debra Lincoln of the Colwell United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Lawrence Oliver Lomison was born Aug. 1, 1918, at Waterloo, the son of Homer and Edith (Gumble) Lomison. He graduated in 1936 from East High in Waterloo. Bud worked at Rath Packing before serving in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. In 1947 he moved north of Bassett where he farmed until 1984. On April 27, 1956, he was united in marriage to Maxine Sturdivant Rowley. In 1985, after his retirement, they moved to Charles City. He was a member of the Colwell United Church of Christ where he held various offices in the church, American Legion Auxiliary, Heritage Club, Senior Citizens, Charles City Twisters Square Dance Cllub and Marathon 500. Bud also served as a trustee in Deerfield Township. His interests included bowling, playing cards, dancing and woodworking. Over the years, he did many odd jobs for his family and friends.

Living family members include two children, Shirley (Russell) Nordman and Kenneth Rowley both of Charles City; four grandchildren, Jeff (Melody) Nordman, Tim Rowley and special friend Becky, Denise (Brian) Kelly and Rachael (Barry) Kelly; six great grandchildren, Chase, Alex, Brianna, Alyssa and Spencer Kelly and Nicole (Travis) Hanaway; and two great great grandchildren, Levi Lindner and Halle Hanaway.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on April 7, 2006; a daughter-in-law, Mary Rowley, and a sister, Dorothy Kline.

Laura Boggess, 70, of Charles City, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Laura Boggess will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church. Pastor Rick Fessel will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Laura Jean Timmons Boggess was born May 22, 1939, in Floyd County, the daughter of Jesse and Bernice (Jones) Timmons. She attended Charles City High School and later received her GED. On June 16, 1956, she was united in marriage to Earl Boggess. Laura accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior after listening to Back to the Bible. This made a profound change in her life. She was always concerned about her family’s salvation and relationship to Christ. Laura was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Her interest in others was made evident by her cooking for them at various times and sending greeting cards. Laura’s family was always important to her and she took every opportunity to share her life, love and Savior with them.

Living family members include her husband, Earl Boggess of Charles City; four children, LeRoy (Kellie Ann) Boggess of Charles City, Rod (Sharon) Boggess and Jeri (Dan) Marzen both of Grinnell, and Rick (Deane) Boggess of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a sister, Myrna (Darryl) Sletten of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Sherrry Marzen; and a brother, Russell Timmons.

Mattie Kelly, 84, of Charles City, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Memorial services for Mattie Kelly will be held at a later date.

Mattie Mae Burgess Kelly was born April 11, 1925, at Kingstree, S.C., the daughter of William and Sarah (Oliver) Burgess. She received her education at Kingstree. Mattie married Carl Kelly in 1952. She worked for many years as a housekeeper in nursing homes.

Living family members include four children: Carlean Burgess of Lubbock, Texas, Leonard Kelly of Brooklyn, N.Y., Allen (Brenda) Burgess of Osage and Michael Burgess of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Lucille Clapp, 90, of Charles City, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Lucille Clapp will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

The family will greet friends Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Lucille Edna Beckwith Clapp was born April 17, 1919, at Charles City, the daughter of Glen and Mary (Tynan) Beckwith. She received her education at the Immaculate Conception School. On Nov. 27, 1934, she was united in marriage to Stanley Clapp. Over the years, she was a housekeeper in various homes at Charles City. Lucille was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Catherine Circle, Moose Lodge and Ladies of the Moose. She enjoyed dancing, sewing and house cleaning.

Living family members include two children, Merlyn (Margaret) Clapp of Charles City and Carol (John “Jay” Caneff) Patterson-Caneff of Hastings, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Heather (Sam) Hanson, Jonathon (Liz) Patterson, Susan (Mort) David, Vernon (Tracey) Clapp, Mary Elin, Bertha (Mike) Lambright and Kevin (Tonya) Clapp; 16 great-grandchildren; and several great great-grandchildren and many step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on March 7, 1978; two sisters, Lola Harms and Marvel Leon; and a brother, Donald Beckwith.

Dr. Kenneth P. Steimel, 78, of Charles City, died Monday evening, Jan. 11, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Dr. Ken Steimel will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Kenneth Peter Steimel was born Sept. 10, 1931, at Gilbertville the son of Oscar P. and Frances M. (Weber) Steimel. He graduated from St. Mary of Mt. Carmel High School in 1949, Loras College (Cum Laude) in 1954 and Creighton University Medical School in 1958. On July 7, 1956, he was united in marriage to Honore Jones at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. In 1959, he served his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minn. Dr. Ken began his practice in Osage with Dr. Robert Huber. From 1960 to 1962, he served in the United States Air Force as an Aviation Medical Examiner, while stationed at San Antonio, Texas. After his time in the Air Force, Dr. Steimel returned to Charles City to join Dr. Huber again as a family practice physician until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Iowa Medical Association, Floyd County Medical Association, American Medical Association, American Legion, Izaak Walton League and a 33 year charter member of the National Fishing Hall of Fame. Ken dearly loved his time in the Northwoods where he could truly relax. Other memberships included Knights of Columbus and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he trained altar servers. His interests included spring and fall fishing, hunting, summer gardening, traveling somewhere tropical in the winter and “hanging out on the beach,” reading outdoor adventure magazines and eating fried chicken.

Living family members include his wife of 53 years, Honore Steimel of Charles City; five daughters: Sheila (Tom) Ossowski of Anoka, Minn., Jeannine (Craig) Fisher of Charles City, Susan Steimel and special friend, Todd Virchow of Garner, Madonna (Rusty) Weiss of Kasota, Minn., and Kari (Brendan) Foust of Rochester, Minn.; 14 grandchildren: Dan (Katie) Ossowski, Pete (Andrea) Ossowski, Jake Ossowski, Joe Fisher, Amy Fisher, Katlyn Fisher, Sara Hoover, Sabrina Hoover, Jestine Weiss, Kaelan Weiss, Antonia Weiss, Teagan Weiss, Mikella Foust and Nonie Foust; brother, Don (Mary) Steimel of Newhall; three sisters, Pat (Dr. Joe) Monaco of Wausau, Wis., Marge Sauve` of Chandler, Ariz., and Sharon Davis of Waterloo; many nieces; nephews; cousins; special cousin, Earl (Miriam) Steimel of Eagle Center; and two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Jones of Cedar Rapids and Charlotte (Mike) Mack of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary Steimel; and a sister, Ramona Young.

Colonel James Stanley Keating entered eternal life on Jan. 8, 2010, at the age of 74. He was born in Iowa to Leone and Stanley Keating. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1953. He attended the University of Denver and entered the Air Force, receiving his pilot’s wings and commission at Lubbock AFB, Texas. Rated as a Command Pilot, James had more than 4,500 flying hours including over 300 Combat hours in 240 close Air Support missions in Southeast Asia. James was an instructor pilot in three front-line aircrafts including his combat tour in Vietnam.

While on active duty, James earned his BA from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, and an MBA from Golden Gate University. He was a graduate of the Air War College. James was also a member of the USAF Olympic Wrestling Team in 1960. Colonel Keating was retired at Camp Smith Hwaii in 1982.

James received dozens of personal decorations including the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After his Air Force career, James joined the Northrop Corporation as Aircraft Division Pacific Regional Director of Marketing for F-20A. He retired from Northrop after 13 years in 1994.

He had a membership in many organizations, including 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner.

A believer in “giving back” he was a volunteer wrestling coach at various schools during his many assignments, including six years at Palm Desert High School, Calif., as a technical advisor.

James enjoyed watching and playing many sports.

James deeply loved his family and his Lord. He is survived by his two children, Mrs. Julie Bassett of Sarasota, Fla., and Kevin of Rockledge, Fla., and four grandchildren; two brothers, Richard of Banning, Calif., and David of South Elgin, Ill., and sister, Kay Swenson of Ames.

A memorial service will be held Feb. 7 at the Air Force Village West chapel in Riverside at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Feb. 22.

Wendell L. Hobert, 89, of Charles City, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Wendell Hobert will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Ruth Yeaton of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation and taps by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue an hour before the service at the funeral home on Monday.

Wendell Lester Hobert was born May 15, 1920, at Charles City, the son of Lester and Lulu (Pfeiffer) Hobert. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1938. On Sept. 28, 1941, he was united in marriage to Phyllis “Fern” Newton at Charles City. From 1942 to 1946, he served in the United States Navy. After WWII, Wendell farmed and did electrical work for local contractors until 1975 when he started Hobert Electric. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Charles City Patriotic Association and Care Review Committee for Iowa Nursing Homes. Wendell was active as a leader for the Boy Scouts and the Electrical Board for Charles City. His interests included trout fishing, mushroom hunting, gardening, traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Living family members include his six children, Linda (Robert) Milton of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert (Judy) Hobert of Penn Valley, Calif., Lester (Linda) Hobert of Charles City, Mary (Jerry) Cross of Forest City, Edward (Teresa) Hobert of Charles City and Aaron Hobert and fiancée Diane Shearman of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy (Don) Swinton of Waverly; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Phyllis Mae Hobert; and a nephew, Mike Swinton.

Those left to cherish her memory include her siblings, Frances Berchtold, Roger Ross, Carol (Jerry) Meader, Larry (Jenny) Ross, Vicki (Bruce) Inman and Jimmie (Gwen) Ross; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

CEDARFALLS — Allen P. “Al” Shinstine, 74, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.

Visitation will be from 4-6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a 6:30 p.m. Vigil Service and a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary Service will be conducted. Visitation will also continue one hour before service at the church.

He was born June 8, 1935 at Boyd, the son of Paul A. and Alveda (Pitz) Shinstine. Al married Mary K. Boehmer on Sept. 2, 1958, in Charles City. He was a 1953 graduate of New Hampton High School, attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated from the Business Institute of Technology in Cedar Falls. Al served in the United States Army and was an accountant at Clay Equipment Company and Roberts Home Decorating, retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was a fourth degree knight with the St. Patrick Knights of Columbus. Al was the founder and honorary board member of the Knights of Columbus National Softball Tournament and founder of the Knights of Columbus State Spelling Bee, Basketball Free Throw Tournament and State Softball Tournament. He was past President of Mended Hearts and past District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Shinstine, of Cedar Falls; three daughters: Colleen Shinstine of Des Moines, Virginia “Gin” Garbes of Cedar Falls and Kathleen “Kathy” Burnell of Waterloo; four sons: Gregory “Greg” (Kathryn) Shinstine of Waterloo, Paul Shinstine of Paola, Kansas, William “Bill” (Felita) Shinstine of Kansas City, Mo., and Richard “Rick” Shinstine of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, and his beloved pet Beagle, Marty.

GREENE — Patricia Ann Tefft was born Sept. 20, 1929, in Charles City, the daughter of William and Nancy Harvey Warrington and died Jan. 17, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Judy Wooton of Marble Rock UMC presiding. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, and one hour prior to services at the church.

She received her education at Charles City High School graduating in 1948. On March 11, 1949, she was united in marriage to James Edward Tefft at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. This union was blessed with three daughters. James and Patricia celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary before her husband’s passing in 2008.

In 1949 Patricia and James started farming the family farm near Nashua. In 1961, she moved to Greene where James was an independent truck driver. She resided in Greene until 2007 when she entered the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Patricia was a dedicated employee of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital for 41 years as an aide and was the very first ward clerk the hospital had. She especially enjoyed her service there, working with employees and assisting the patients.

Patricia was a member of the First Methodist Church of Greene and was active in church circles and enjoyed helping with activities there.

Patricia had a special love for her home in Greene, her yard and flowers. She enjoyed being outside tending it and walking her beloved dog Runner. She will be remembered by her family as a good cook, preparing delicious holiday meals with holiday traditions such as piñatas at Christmas and Easter egg hunts. She was an avid supporter of her grandchildren and their many activities. “Grandma Pat” was always there for them.

Living family members include three daughters: Nancy (Steve) Simerson of Charles City, Jeanette (Johnny) Brezina of Papillion, Neb., and Mary Jane (Dennis) Ross of Greene; seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Ross of Waverly, Jeremey Simerson of Nashua, Patrick Ross of Oakdale, Minn., Jason Brezina of Omaha, Neb., Stacie Merta of Marion, Michael Ross of Clarksville and Joey Brezina of Omaha, Neb.; eight great-grandchildren: Kyra Ross, Erika Ross, Olivia Ross, Bridget Ross, Chloe Ross, Rex Ross, Avery Merta, Aiden Merta; one sister-in-law, Patricia McGregor of Nashua; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Patricia was preceded in death by husband, James in 2008; her parents; one brother, Dale Warrington; one sister, Mercedes Kay; and one brother-in-law. Malcolm McGregor.

Hayden Dale Stowe, seven-day-old son of Sean and Kristen (Eaves) Stowe of Charles City, died on Sunday morning, Jan. 17, 2010, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Private graveside services for Hayden Dale Stowe will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate.

CRESCO — Dennis Barr, 69 of Cresco, died Wednesday, Jan.13, 2010, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Dennis Kay Barr was born July 21, 1940, in Charles City. Dennis was the son of Roland and Florence (Myers) Barr. He graduated from Charles City High School and proudly served in the United States Navy for four years.

Dennis married Faye (Boge) Barnes in 1984 in Cresco. He worked for Oliver/White Farm Equipment for over 30 years. He was currently employed by General Security Services Corporation where he headed Security at Featherlite in Cresco. Dennis was and avid reader, Louis L’amour among his favorites. Dennis was a die hard sports fan, especially enjoying watching the Iowa Hawkeyes. Dennis was king of the grill and enjoyed family gatherings. Dennis loved playing cards with his wife, family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, especially his best friend, soul mate and wife, Faye.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Faye; two brothers, Ron (Ann) of Texas and Rich (Kathy) of Charles City; one sister, Merrilinn (Dick) of Washington State; his four sons: Tracy, Tim, Craig, and Chad; two step daughters, Rhonda Barnes and Robin (Jack) Darland; a step son, Scott (Trudy) Barnes; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
