Almon Leroy Scherf
SAUK CENTRE, Minn. — A memorial service for
Almon Leroy Scherf will be held at Salem
Lutheran Church in Albert Lea on Saturday,
February 11, at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Jay Dahlvang
will officiate. Interment will be in Ft.
Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials will be
gratefully accepted for First Lutheran
Youth/Mexico Mission Trips, Sauk Centre, and the
Freeborn County Humane Society, Albert Lea.
Military honors will be accorded by the Albert
Lea area Veterans Groups.
Almon Leroy Scherf passed away February 4, 2006,
at St. Michael’s Nursing Home in Sauk Centre,
Minn. He was a resident of Albert Lea, Minn.,
until May 2005, then moved to the Riverview
Manor to be near his daughter, Pat. The son of
Merna (Stewart) and Elmer Scherf, ‘Roy’ or ‘Al,’
as most knew him, was born on Sept. 16, 1921, in
Floyd County. He attended Floyd High School,
graduating in 1939.
Following graduation, Roy worked as a barn
painter and held various jobs before moving to
Los Angeles to work assembly in the aircraft
industry for Lockheed-Vega. He remained there
until, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he
enlisted in the United States Coast Guard as a
radioman. Stationed in various ports, among them
Duluth, New York and Puerto Rico, he served
until the end of the war in 1946.
Roy moved to Albert Lea after his discharge from
the Coast Guard. He began working for his Uncle
Arnold at Lageson Hardware (later the Marshall
Wells store) and playing catcher for Floyd's new
baseball team, which included several of his
cousins. He met Betty Metcalf (Hermanson) at the
Clark Steet Cafe, whom he married on October 21,
1949. (They divorced in 1982). He joined his
friend, Derald Morfitt, at Floorcrafters in
1954, a job he would hold during the birth and
raising of his three children, Michael, Patricia
and Robert. As an installer, and later crew
manager for the store, he continued in the floor
covering business for 38 years. He retired in
1992 after a coronary arrest and bi-pass
surgery, dedicating himself to staying active
and healthy.
Roy enjoyed bowling, fishing and woodworking in
his younger adult years. In later years and in
retirement, his pastimes included memberships at
the American Legion, V.F.W., Elks, Eagles, and
Health Reach. He belonged to the Solos Club for
a while and even "took up" square dancing!
Meanwhile, he was an avid gardener, who
generously shared his harvests of vegetables and
raspberries with his friends and neighbors. He
liked to walk, as those who encountered him
daily by the lake or at the mall can attest. He
loved spending time with friends: on the golf
course, on the dance floor, and at the bowling
alley (participating in three leagues), where
for many years he held his own as one of the
city’s premier senior bowlers. He never failed
to entertain with a joke, a witty comment or a
lyric from a song someone’s casual word had
brought to mind.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Merna
and Elmer Scherf.
He is survived by his children: Michael (wife
Doreen), an English teacher in Tucson, Ariz.;
Pat Newell (husband Mike), an area supervisor
for the Central Minnesota Foster Grandparents
Program (Catholic Charities, St. Cloud) in Sauk
Centre, Minn.; and Robert (fiance' Coleen
Zimmerman), an employee at Hormel Industries in
Austin, Minn. Roy leaves behind four beautiful
granddaughters: Sierra Scherf, of Albert Lea;
and Abbey, Kelley and Haeley Newell, of Sauk
Centre. He has one sibling, a loving sister,
Dorothy Boggs, who resides in Woodstock, Ga.,
with her husband, John - Roy's good friend. He
is survived as well by his three nephews, Steve,
Jim and Mark, and their families.
Roy had been a member of Salem Lutheran Church
in Albert Lea for many years and just recently
became a member of First Lutheran Church in Sauk
Centre. His faith in Christ gave him strength
throughout his life, into death, and now gives
him peace for eternity.
A sensitive and caring father, a generous
friend, a model of hard work and good character
— he will be missed by all who knew him.

Etta Marie Stevens, the daughter of Elna
Margaret (Holst) and Loyal Eugene Abbott, Sr.,
was born in Brandon, Iowa on May 15, 1937. She
was the youngest of three children born to her
parents and grew up in Independence.
‘Marie,’ as she was fondly known by her family
and friends, was a very creative and talented
woman! During her leisure time, Marie created
many wonderful keepsakes and treasures. She
loved to crochet, quilt, knit, sew, work with
beading, solve word search puzzles and watch
rodeos. Marie delighted many people with her
unusual creations of money origami. She created
many of her homemade crafts from products of
nature, often going for long walks to berry pick
or to collect driftwood, abandoned beehives,
leaves, weeds, etc. These were transformed into
beautiful works of art, which she shared with
many.
While sitting in the windowed ‘Paradise Room’ of
her home, Marie loved to watch the river, look
at the flowers and watch birds while visiting
with her family and friends. She treasured the
simple blessings in life and traveling. Marie
traveled to nearly every state, many times
driving to deliver Winnebagos to their new
destinations.
Marie is described as a talkative, giving and a
loving woman with a unique sense of adventure
and direction. Her greatest priority was her
family who claim she made delicious homemade
breads and rolls. Marie was united in marriage
to Carl Blackburn on December 28, 1953. They
became the proud parents of two sons and two
daughters. Later, Marie was united in marriage
to William Stevens on April 5, 1981. Both
husbands pre-decease her.
Marie is a former president of the Women’s UAW
(Oliver) Auxiliary and has spent most of her
life in the Charles City area.
Marie will be dearly missed by all who have
shared in her life.
She is survived by her twin sons, Alvin (Connie)

at the age of 17 and served his country as a
Radarman during World War II. On June 12, 1948,
he was united in marriage to Rose Marie ‘Sully’
Sullivan. In those early years, they were great
square dance enthusiasts. Ed was truly a
self-made man. As a young apprentice, he learned
the electrical trade as his father had done
before him. After many years of employment with
Paulsen Electric in Cedar Rapids, he purchased
Bluhm Electric of Charles City in 1976. A
successful and reputable contracting business
was built. Hard working and respected by his
peers and employees, Ed was always willing to
put on the tools to help complete a job. He was
a true master of his trade and very proud of
Wubbens Electric Inc., which is currently being
run by his youngest son, Jim. Ed tried to retire
in 1990 but kept close to the business and his
expertise was always appreciated. As things

grandchildren. His greatest love was for the
game of golf which he played and taught very
well. A man of few words, but when he spoke, his
dry sense of humor and wisdom was cherished by
those who love him. He was an attentive and
loving grandfather to eight grandchildren, who
always felt his love.

Marie of Charles City; three children, Terry
Wubbens of Charles City, Susan (Bob) Morris, Jr.

Stanley Monroe
Stanley Monroe, 91, of Charles City, died
Sunday, February 26, 2006, at the Salsbury
Baptist Home in Charles City.
Funeral services for Stanley Monroe will be held
at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational
Church. Pastor Phil Coor will officiate.
Inurnment will be at a later date.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in
Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Thursday. Visitation
will continue at the church an hour prior to the
service.
Stanley Thomas Monroe was born October 16, 1914,
in Bassett, the son of Guy and Geneva ‘Tillie’
(Hills) Monroe. He graduated from the Charles
City High School in 1932. All of his 91 years
were lived in the Iowa he loved. On August 31,
1940, he was united in marriage to Velma
Anderson at Osage. For decades, Stan operated
the Sinclair, and later, FS bulk plants,
delivering gasoline and diesel to area farmers
and heating oil to Charles City homes. Never did
a Christmas go by when Stan wouldn’t leave his
warm house to drag an oil hose through the snow
to some chilly soul who forgot to fill up. He
was a 60-year-plus member of the First
Congregational Church, active in the
Congregational Men’s Fellowship, the Knights of
Pythias for over 50 years, Elks and Kiwanis.
Stan loved to fish and play golf and was very
proud of having helped build both of Charles
City’s golf courses. He was a wonderful husband
to Velma for over 65 years, a proud and
supportive father, a devoted son, grandfather,
brother, uncle, father-in-law and, most of all,
a good friend to everyone.
Stan was as honest as the day is long and always
advised to, “live life so you don’t have to be
looking over your shoulder.” One of the better
quotes ever from this man, known for his quick
wit and generous heart, was, “The trouble with
life is you can’t get out of it alive.” Stan was
a simple man from a time when character really
meant something. He was not rich, but his legacy
is. His departure leaves a hole in many hearts
that cannot be filled.
Living family members include his loving wife,
Velma of Charles City; two sons, Craig (Sharyn)
Monroe of Denver, Colo., and Tom (Patti) Monroe
of Houston, Texas.; five grandchildren; and four
great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a
brother, John Monroe; and a sister, ‘Deeta’
Zierath.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North
Iowa, 1003 Gilbert Street, Charles City, IA
50616.
