Glenn Greenzweig

 
 

Glenn Greenzweig, loving husband and father, passed away at 95 in Mercedes, Texas, on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 2006, at the Valley Grande Manor Nursing Home in Weslaco, Texas.

Funeral services for Glenn Greenzweig will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor LaVonne Kaasa of the West St. Charles United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday.

Glenn Robert Greenzweig was born May 2, 1911, at Rockford, the son of Robert and Threse (Hirsch) Greenzweig. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1928. In 1935, he married Alta Winters. Alta died on April 29, 1941. On Dec. 31, 1943, he was united in marriage to Joyce Bracken at Austin, Minn. Glenn was a farmer for more than 40 years in the West St. Charles community. Glenn’s interests were in sports, especially softball, horseshoes and golf. He was highly respected among his church affiliations and also was a 33rd degree Mason. Glenn and Joyce retired to Rio Grande Valley, Texas, 30 years ago, where he enjoyed socializing with friends, playing cards and being a member of Central Christian Church at Weslaco.

Glenn is survived by his wife Joyce Greenzweig of Mercedes, Texas; two daughters, Lucille Chapman and her husband Don of Denton, Texas, and Cosy McLemore and her husband Randy of Dallas; a son, Mahlon Greenzweig and his wife Sharon of Highland Village, Texas; a brother, Virgil Greenzweig and his wife Florence of Charles City; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; a daughter, Glenda Greenzweig; a brother; and a sister.

NEW HAMPTON — Ralph A. Evans, 69, of New Hampton, formerly of Ionia, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at the New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton.

Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua.

Richard Houstman
 
 

Richard Houstman, 79, of Charles City, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Richard Houstman will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the First Wesleyan Church. Pastor Neil Rippey will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue Saturday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Richard Ray Houstman was born Aug. 12, 1926, at Ocheyedan, the son of Fred and Edith (Jones) Houstman. He graduated from Ocheyedan High School. In May of 1953, he was united in marriage to Grace (Dotson). Grace died on March 30, 1986. On Sept. 9, 1989, he married Doris Sinnwell. Doris died on Aug. 25, 2003. During his working career, he was employed with Wackerbarth-Brothers Implement from 1948-1955 at Ocheyedan, Adrian Implement from 1955 to 1964 and at Salsbury Laboratories from 1964 until his retirement in1990. Richard served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of First Wesleyan Church, where he taught Sunday school and was Sunday school superintendent for many years. He was a member of the American Legion. His hobbies included woodworking, traveling, flea marketing and repairing things. Richard loved everything and everybody. Most of all, he thoroughly enjoyed life.

Living family includes special friend and caregiver Celia Kaiser of Charles City; two daughters, Mary (Steven) Jung of Mason City and Gloria (Dennis) Venz of Alden; three grandchildren, Jason Jung and special friend Christina Powell of Mason City, Jenna Jung and fianc/ Andrew Johnson of Mason City and Tiffany Venz of Alden; one special great-granddaughter, Alexis Powell; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; a grandson in 1985; and a sister.

James Klinkel
 
 

James Klinkel, 75, of Charles City, died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He had been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for some time when the Lord called him home.

Funeral services for James Klinkel will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Paul Wilcox will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Friends may call the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Born William Charles Harold Cowell on June 1, 1931, James started life on a farm in North Dakota with his parents Frank William and Grace (Cornish) Cowell. On March 20, 1936, he was adopted by his eldest sister Olive and her husband Levi Klinkel. It was then that his name was legally changed to Jimmy Klinkel.

James grew up in the Charles City area. He went to Charles City Community High School and graduated in 1949. On June 17, 1951, he married Eleanor Mae Lockey at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together with God, they raised four boys and one girl: Wayne, Victor, Robert, Douglas and Kimberly.

Throughout his life, James remained a pillar of his community and his church, Trinity United Methodist Church. He was active in: United Methodist Men, Assistant Lay Leader, Staff Parish Pastor Relations, Nominating Committee, Missions Committee, Jr. & Sr. High Youth Counselor, annual Methodist Conference, Conference Planning Committee, various Bishop jobs, Floyd County Volunteers, Charles City Community Revitalization, Boy Scouts of America, Loyal Order of Moose, and many local baseball leagues including the Charles City Alumni baseball team.

 
 

His working years were spent at Salsbury Laboratories as a printer. After retirement, he stayed busy transporting vehicles for Mike Molstead Motors.

When James was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, he was forced to slow down. He enjoyed watching any sport on TV, working “fill-it-ins” puzzles, reading western tales, and spending time conversing at numerous family gatherings. James was always a stern, but loving father and grandfather. A moral man, Jamesâ life was a shining example for how all should live. He is greatly missed.

James is survived by his loving wife Eleanor; his sons, Wayne (Lynne) of Montana, Bob (Judy) of Ames, Doug (Kim) of Charles City; his daughter Kim (Gary) Christiansen of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; and many brothers and sisters.

 
 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Grace and Olive and Levi; his son Vic; and many brothers and sisters.

Clarice Maxine Picken Goddard was born Oct. 30, 1913, in Floyd County, the daughter of William and Carrie (Waid) Picken. She graduated from the Floyd Consolidated School and attended Iowa State Teachers College. Clarice taught rural schools in Floyd and Rudd townships from 1933 to 1937. On July 1, 1937, she was united in marriage to Leonard Goddard at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. From 1959 to 1976 she worked as a receptionist at the Breitbach Chiropractic Clinic. Clarice was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was involved with the United Methodist Women. Other memberships included the Pythian Sisters, Woman’s Club and Senior Citizens of Charles City. Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, reading and flowers.

Living family members include a daughter, Rosalie (Greg) Pieper of Charles City; two grandchildren, David Jacobs and Lisa Jacobs; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald (Marcella) Picken of Mason City and Robert Picken of Floyd; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1996; a brother, Kenneth Picken; and a sister, Inez Blunt.

MARBLE ROCK - Michael C. Shaw, 53, of 210 Hutches St., Marble Rock, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at the Mary Brigh Unit, St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Reid’s Funereal Chapel, 423 Bradford St., Marble Rock, with inurnment at Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock. Military Honors will conducted by Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion of Marble Rock.

Esther Schwab, 86, of Charles City, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for Esther Schwab will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3-8 p.m. Friday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Esther Frances Pint Schwab was born Aug. 15, 1919, in Mitchell County, the daughter of William and Bessie (Mullen) Pint. She received her education from the Osage and Floyd schools. On April 28, 1936, she was united in marriage to Patrick Schwab at Osage. They lived in the Osage, Floyd and Charles City areas all of their lives. During her working career Esther was employed at Gibbons Apparel, Stewart Shoe Store and Prichards Apparel. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rosary Society, St. Jude Circle and Heritage Club. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, reading and working puzzles. Most of all, as her first priority, Esther looked forward to spending time with her family.

Living family members include two sons, James (Dorothy) Schwab of Cedar Falls and Gary (Martha) Schwab of Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Norma) Pint; a sister-in-law, Velma Pint; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Leo and Harold Pint; and a sister, Viola Poe Self.

Michael Charles Shaw was born Aug. 28, 1952, in Oskaloosa, a son of Marion Francis Shaw and Dolores G (Fish) Shaw.

He received his education at the Thomas Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. On Oct. 18, 1971, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the U.S.S. Enterprise until March 9, 1974, when he was honorably discharged.

 
 

For the past 10-plus years, Mike was employed at Curries Manufacturing in Mason City. On March 15, 2006, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou (Feltus) Marzen at the First United Methodist Church in Rockford. Since their marriage, they have made their home in Marble Rock.

Mike enjoyed cooking and was an avid NASCAR and Green Bay Packers fan.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Mary Lou of Marble Rock; four stepsons, Jon (Annette) King and Jason King, both of Mason City, Graydon (Aaron) Marzen of Ankeny and Matt Marzen of Whittemore; two stepdaughters, Christine and Danielle Marzen from Ames; three step-grandchildren, Kaylyn, Tyler and Deven of Mason City; one step-great-grandson, Alexander Jon of Mason City; his mother, Dolores, from Clutier; four sisters, Sharlene (Dennis) Merta from Fairfax, Susann (Lyle) Kruse of Blairstown, Nancy Palmer of Verbank, N.Y., and Trish (Jerry) Detling of Newhall; and one brother, Pat, from Cedar Rapids. Mike is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

The family will greet relatives and friends at Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St. in Rockford, on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. The visitation will continue Monday one hour prior to Lawrence’s service at the church.

NASHUA — Alvin G. Junker, 78, of rural Nashua, died Friday afternoon, June 9, 2006, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane, Charles City. Interment will be in Allison Cemetery at Allison with Military Rites by Nashua V.F.W. Post # 6792. Visitation will be today from 4-7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Further visitation will be for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.



Harold E. Wagener
 
 

FARIBAULT, Minn. — Harold E. Wagener, 80, of Faribault, Minn. died on Thursday, June 8, 2006, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral Services will be held at First English Lutheran Church, Faribault, on Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at Meadow Ridge Memorial Park, Faribault. Visitation will be held at the Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault, today from 4-8 p.m. and also at the church for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Harold Everett, son of William and Edna (Hart) Wagener, was born Oct. 27, 1925 in Faribault. He was baptized and confirmed at First English Lutheran Church, Faribault, and graduated from Faribault High School in 1943.

After high school, he entered the army first infantry and served in World War II. He returned to Faribault and, in 1947, moved to Preston, where he was employed by Kunau Implement. On July 17, 1948, he was united in marriage to Nora Means at the Holden Lutheran Church in rural Kenyon, Minn. He and Nora returned to the family farm in Wheeling Township in 1950, where they lived until moving to Faribault in 1995.

Harold’s greatest passions were his family, his wonderful circle of friends, his beloved occupation, (farming) and his John Deeres! Harold was an active contributor to his community. He was a finance board member and a long-time usher at First English Lutheran Church, member of the Nerstrand Elevator Board, 4-H leader, and Red Cross volunteer driver for those needing medical transportation. He was a friend to everyone he met and an avid, interested listener and talker!

He is survived by his wife Nora of Faribault; two daughters, Janice (Leon) Mulford of Charles City, Iowa, and Diane (Steve) Wagener of Albany, Ore.; two grandchildren, Sarah Mulford of Owatonna, Minn. and Daniel Mulford of Des Moines; three step-grandchildren, Sarah, Jeremy and Loren Wagener of Portland, Ore.; sister Marjorie (Paul Norgaard) Wagener of Elk Grove, Calif.; brother Loren (Betty) Wagener of Albany, Ore., and two sisters-in law Anita Wagener of Faribault and Loretta Wagener of St. Cloud, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert on Dec. 21, 1992, and Harvey on July 27, 1999.

GREENE — Lawrence A. Gleason, 67, of 312 S. 1st St., of Greene, IA died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E., in Mason City. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery in Glenville, MN with military rites accorded by the V.F.W. post #447 and the American Legion Post #56, both of Albert Lea, MN.

The family will greet relatives and friends at Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St. in Rockford on Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The visitation will continue Monday one hour prior to Lawrence’s service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence A. Lawrence Allen Gleason was born December 12, 1938 in Northwood to Vernon and Sophia (Aanrud) Gleason. Lawrence attended school in Glenville, MN. He honorably and faithfully served during the post Korean era in the U.S. Navy. On December 12, 1960 Lawrence was united in marriage to Pauline Sutton. The couple lived in Rockford for 29 years, where Lawrence worked at Sukups, White Farm and Advanced Technologies. Lawrence then moved to Greene to enjoy his retirement.

Lawrence is survived by his four daughters, Cindy (Rick) Merriss of Rockford; Connie (Terry) Bergman; Wendy (Mike) Perrott and Vicki (Dan) Ries, all of Mason City; sixteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; his sister, Doris Bowran of St. Paul, MN; his nephews, Leroy (Bonnie) Williamson of Clear Lake, Jerry Williamson and Terry (Mary) Williamson, both of Northwood, Steven (Lona) Williamson of Waseca, MN, Tom Williamson of Elysian, MN; David Gleason of Florida and a niece, Vivian (Don) Freeman of Freeborn, MN.

Lawrence enjoyed life while boating, camping, mushroom hunting, playing cards, bowling, playing pool, turtle hunting, playing horseshoes and cribbage. His greatest love was hanging out with his nephews and watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren growing up.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sophia Gleason; his father, Vernon; a sister, Clara; four brothers, Arthur, Walter, Clarence and Lloyd Gleason and a nephew, Robert.

NASHUA — James T. McNally, 31, of Nashua died as the result of an accidentally drowning late Sunday night, June 11, 2006, while fishing in Nashua.

Visitation will be on Thursday, June 15 from 6-8 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly. There will also be a 7 p.m. Scripture service on Thursday at the funeral home. Further services and burial will be on Saturday in Spring Valley, Ill. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation.

IONIA — Thalia Eva Huffman, 85, of Ionia passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 13, 2006 at New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17 at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua with Pastor Mary Hatch officiating. Cremation and inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua at a later date. Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. and one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.


 

James Hector

 
 

James Hector, 65, of Charles City, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

No services are being planned at this time.

James Herman Hector was born May 2, 1941, at Charles City, the son of Herman and Evelyn (Grimm) Hector. Jim lived with his parents until they moved from the farm into Colwell, at which time he became a resident of Handicap Village in Clear Lake. He remained there until moving to Charles City a little more than a year ago. While living at Handicap Village, he enjoyed the outdoor activities, especially working with the animals and gardening.

Living family members include a brother, Richard (Rhonda) Hector of Charles City; a sister, Sandra Nosbisch of Mesa, Ariz.; and four nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Louis Culbert
 
 

Louis Culbert, 93, a resident of the Starr Home since 1997 and formerly of 1008 Ellis Dr. in Charles City died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City from complications of a recent stroke.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17 at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with Pastor David Werges officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home. The visitation will continue one hour prior to Louis' services Saturday at the funeral home.

Louis Frederick Culbert was born May 18, 1913, in Minersville, Pa., the son of Thomas Jefferson and Minette W. (Zerbe) Culbert. In January of 1914, he moved with his parents to Mason City, where he later started school. In 1920, his family moved to Charles City, where he attended grade school in the old McKinley School.

In 1927, his family moved to Omaha, Neb. Louis enrolled in the Omaha Technical High School, where he graduated in 1931 and he later attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In 1935, Louis moved back to Charles City where he was engaged in the electrical business as a partner with his father. He was united in marriage to Etta Lubben of Charles City at Milbank, S.D. on July 26, 1938.

 
 

During World War II, Louis, with his wife and son Allan, moved to Omaha, where he worked for the Glenn L. Martin Company at Offut Air Base as a layout machinist and instructor, building B-26 and B-29 bombers. During the Korean Conflict in the early 1950's, he worked at Solar Aircraft in Des Moines, where he served as a layout inspector in their Experimental Department. His last employment was with the Oliver/White Farm facility working in the inspection department until his retirement in 1973.

Louis enjoyed bowling, golfing and was an avid reader. Playing cards, especially cribbage, was an important interest. His primary hobby was the collecting and studying of postage stamps which he had done since the age of 8 years. He was a charter member and one of the founders of the Trans-Mississippi Philatelic Society and was a life member of the American Philatelic Society. Louis was frequently consulted by fellow collectors who respected his lifelong study of the subject.

Louis was raised as a Lutheran and was confirmed in the Augustana Lutheran Church of Omaha in 1929. He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and Knights of Pythias, and was a retired member of the U.A.W., local #1315.

 
 

He is survived by his son, Allan Culbert of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, James Culbert of Des Moines, Dr. Kevin (JoAnne) Culbert of Leesburg, Va., Greg (Tracy) Culbert of Fairbanks, Alaska, Anne Culbert of Alexandria, Va. and Teresa (Dr. Mark) Sturdy of Rochester, Ill.; nine great-grandchildren, Thomas Culbert and Jacquelyn Culbert, both of Des Moines, Jessica Sturdy, Taylor Sturdy and Connor Sturdy, all of Rochester, Ill., Garrett Culbert and Leah Culbert, both of Leesburg, Va., and Timothy Culbert and Gracy Culbert, both of Fairbanks, Alaska.

He is preceded in death by his wife Etta; parents; sister Vesta; and two brothers, Paul and Caleb.

CHARLES CITY/NASHUA — Jesse William Cero, 17, of Charles City and Nashua, died Wednesday morning, June 14, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa in Mason City of injuries he received in an A.T.V. accident near Marble Rock.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 19, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with Msgr. Stanley Hayek officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1-7 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. There will also be a 6:30 p.m. scripture service at the funeral home on Sunday. Further visitation will be for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday, arranged by Jesse’s mother’s family.

He is also survived by his father Rick (Julie Koskie) Hicok of Nashua; two step-siblings, Caitlin & Cody Brase of Nashua: paternal grandparents Rose (Vernon) LaBarge of Nashua and Bill Hicok; a step-grandmother, Sylvia Koskie of Nashua; along with along with a special friend, Paige Enabit, and her family, Marv, Liz and Dustin.

 
 

Jesse William Cero was born Aug. 23, 1988, in Osage, the son of Rick Hicok and Lori Cero. Jesse lived with his mother in Charles City and had just completed his junior year in high school. He recently moved to Nashua to live with his father and had planned to graduate from Charles City High School in May of 2007.

It was obvious at a very early age that Jesse was truly one in a million. Jesse was thoughtful, kind and loving. You could always count on him to put a smile on your face.

Jesse’s roots have always been in Charles City. Jesse was active in his church and school. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and active in the I.C. Youth Group. Jesse loved being with his family, teammates and friends.

 
 

Jesse attended elementary school at Immaculate Conception School, moving on to middle school and then to Charles City High School to complete his junior year.

Jesse loved wrestling. He understood the determination, competitiveness and sacrifices you need to be successful. He was proud to be a Comet wrestler. He began his wrestling career very early with the support of Troy, Lori and Amy. Many weekends were spent on the road, traveling to wrestling meets. Jesse excelled in Greco Roman and freestyle wrestling. Greco Roman became his favorite style. Jesse qualified for Greco Roman Nationals in Fargo, N.D. One week later, Jesse was invited to wrestle on the Iowa Team in Colorado. Competing in both events were a great accomplishment. In every tournament in which he competed, Jesse always improved his technique. An added aspect Jesse loved about wrestling was the opportunity to travel and meet new people. Jesse’s wrestling career did not just end at the mat, the coaches and fellow teammates were like a second family to him.

Jesse was an avid lover of life. He will be missed by all and will never be forgotten.

John D. Smith

SPRINGVALE, Maine — John D. Smith, 59, of Springvale, Maine, died Saturday, June 17, 2006, in Portland, Maine.

Mr. Smith was born on Oct. 25, 1946, in Oakland, Calif. He was the son of John W. Smith of Virginia, and the late Wilma (Bonsall) Smith. He was raised in Charles City, Iowa, and attended schools there. Following high school, John joined the National Guard, and, shortly after, would enlist in the U.S. Navy.

John was a career Naval officer, retiring as Chief Petty Officer after more than 20 years of dedicated service to his country. John was a demolitions expert, and concentrated in the field of aviation ordinance. He spent two tours in Vietnam, and a good portion of his time attached to the VP 26 Squadron at Brunswick Naval Air Base. Toward the end of his service, he worked as a naval recruiter.

After John retired from the Navy, he spent some time working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and driving bus for the local Community Action bus service.

John was a big outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed watching and participating in sporting events when he could, and collecting rocks. John had a lively personality. He loved to joke around with others, making them laugh and smile. He loved to spend time with his grandson Zachary, and his loving, caring nature will be missed by many — especially his morning coffee group at the Sunnyside Restaurant in Springvale.

John gave of himself, and, when confronted with his illness, he bravely offered himself up to physicians as a test subject for new and experimental medicines, a true testament of his love for others.

 
 

John was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge.

John is survived by his wife Jeanne (Auger) Smith of Springvale; their sons John J. Smith of Sanford, Corey D. Smith of Springvale; a grandson, Zachary D. Smith; brother William Smith of Davenport, Iowa,: sister Dee Robertson, also of Davenport; two stepbrothers, Phillip Varner of Sacramento, Calif.; Tracy Wenger of Davenport; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours for John will be held Wednesday, June 21, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, where services will be held on Thursday, June 22, at 11 a.m.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — John Wesley Halloran, 89, of Summerville, husband of Marguerite Davis Halloran, died Saturday, June 17, 2006, at his residence.

Mr. Halloran was born on June 22, 1916, in Detroit, Mich., son of the late Burt A. and Ruth V. Halloran. He enjoyed golfing, arts and painting, model airplanes and was a private pilot. He was in the Civil Air Patrol in the late 1940s. He served in the U.S. Army and was a WWII Veteran. He was a member of Boone Hill United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife Marguerite; two sons and three daughters, Michael (Patrice) Halloran of Marietta, Ga., Penny (Jon) Boultron of Traverse City, Mich., Kathleen Halloran of Easley, S.C., Tim (Vivian) Halloran of Muscatine, Iowa, Gail (Steve Bundy) Halloran of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death Virginia LeJeune Halloran, who died in November 1987.

Erwin “Erv” Becker, 86, of Charles City, died Saturday, June 17, 2006, at Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Erv Becker will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastors David Werges and Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Erwin Edward Becker was born Aug. 9, 1919, at Toledo, Ohio, the son of Daniel W. and Marie (Keller) Becker. His Christian Baptism was performed at First Saint John Lutheran Church of East Toledo, Ohio. He attended the Oregon Township schools and graduated from high school in 1938 and from Tri-State Business College in 1940. Erv then went to work in the office and sales for the Nordmann Roofing Company. On Aug. 6, 1946, he was united in marriage to Irmgard Knock at Clarksville. In October of 1948, he joined his father-in-law Henry Knock in business, starting Knock & Becker, a home improvement business in Charles City. Henry Knock moved to Florida in 1958, at which time Erwin and his wife continued the business as Becker Home Improvement. Erv was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lions Club and Noon Kiwanis. His hobbies included gardening and playing golf.

Surviving family members include his loving wife Irmgard of Charles City; three loving children, Rev. Mark (Judy) Becker of Woodbury, Minn., Karen (Max) Brandau of Nora Springs and Kathy (Monte) Waldorf of Charles City; eight grandchildren, Renae (Greg) Adams, Susanne Waldorf, Correne (Todd) Larsen, Dr. Justin Brandau, Dawn Brandau, Rev. Amy Becker, Katy Becker and Daniel Becker; three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Spencer and Darren Adams; a sister, Margaret (Glenn) Koester of Toledo, Ohio; a brother, Rev. Theodore D. Becker; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Cordelia Diederich Calkins was born Aug. 30, 1924, at New Hampton, the daughter of Michael and Theresa (Dumelle) Diederich. She graduated from New Hampton High School. On Sept. 19, 1946, she was united in marriage to Richard Calkins at Chicago. In 1948, they moved to rural Charles City, where they were engaged in farming. Mary was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Happy Hour Club. Her hobbies included playing cards, gardening, bird-watching, traveling and reading.

Living family members include three children, Shirley (Richard) DeVries of Mabelton, Ga., Janice (Richard) Dehn of Cordova, Texas and Martin (Sharon) Calkins of Salix; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen (Robert) Hild of Evansdale; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Weiglein of Ionia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard on June 5, 2000; a daughter, Sharon Calkins; a step-grandson, Michael Petersen; three brothers, Leo Diederich, and Frank and Joe Weiglein; and two sisters, Rose Diedrich and Theresa Hedrick.

William W. Wells

VERNON HILLS, Ill. — William Walter “Bill” Wells, 92, of Vernon Hills, Ill. and recently of Vero Beach, Fla., died June 10, 2006, at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his wife Berniece McIntyre Wells; an infant son, Douglas Wells; and a sister, Charlotte Schmidt. He was of the Protestant faith and attended the Methodist Church. He was born near Boxholm, Iowa, on Nov. 13, 1913.

He graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids in 1934 and spent most of his working life in the consumer finance and loan area. He was founder and president of Credit Finance Company in Charles City for a number of years. He was also vice president of Guarantee Finance Corporation of Des Moines and retired in 1979 as treasurer and chief accounting officer for O’Dea Finance Company of Des Moines.

He was one of the founding members of the Kiwanis Club of Charles City and a member of the Elks Club of both Charles City and Des Moines.

He is survived by his daughter Sharon (James) Dean of Waukegan, Ill; granddaughter Kimberly Dean, Waukegan, Ill.; grandson Christopher (Janet) Dean, a great-granddaughter Cortney Dean and great-grandson Kyle Dean, all of Zion, Ill.; and two sisters, Priscilla (Ed) Stanko, Bloomington, Minn., and Ellen (Bob) Collins, Toledo, Iowa.

Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Vero Beach, Fla. At the request of the family, there will be no visitation and all services will be private. Memorial contributions may be to the American Cancer Society.

HAYWARD, Wis. — Graveside Services for Milton “Buster” Hoy of Hayward, Wis. and formerly of Charles City, were held on June 10, 2006, at an 11 a.m. ceremony at Delafield Cemetery in Delafield, Wis. The service was conducted by his sister, Delores (Dorie) Wojohn of Charles City.

His family gathered around him to pay tribute to him once again at his final resting place alongside his infant daughter Karen Hoy.

Dorie’s ministry cover is Rev. Carolyn Norris Ministry from Benten, Ark. The Hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross,” was played as a piano solo. A poem chosen by his wife Lois called, “In Loving Memory,” was read by his brother Jim of Illinois. Psalm 23 was read by Dorie and we closed with the Lord’s Prayer, Matthew 6:9-13.

Buster is the son of the late Marion and Lois Hoy of Charles City.

Raymond Eugene Jones was born Jan. 4, 1941, in Mason City, the son of Forrest and Virginia (Rodrian) Jones. He attended elementary school in Charles City and then high school in Nashua, graduating in 1959.

He was united in marriage to Karel Baltzer on Nov. 24, 1962, at First Congregational Church in Nashua. To this union, four children were born. Ray and Karel made their home in Nashua. Ray worked in the maintenance department at Hydrotile for 31 years. After Hydrotile closed, Ray worked as a foreman in quality control for Featherlite Trailers in Nashua. Ray retired in 2002 after 10 years of service with Featherlite.

Ray was an active member of his church and community. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Fish and Game Club, both in Nashua. He was an instrumental member of the Shell Rock Valley Little League/Babe Ruth Association, serving as its president. He was a devoted member of the Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star. Ray held many distinguished positions in both of these organizations. In 2002, he served as grand marshal of Iowa in the Order of Eastern Star.

 
 

He was an avid outdoor enthusiast, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapshooting. Ray also enjoyed his hobbies of woodworking, auto body, coaching and collecting Grey Rock animal sculptures. Spending time with family was an important part of Ray’s life; he loved his wife, children and grandchildren dearly. He especially loved watching his grandchildren playing sports and drag racing.

Ray is survived by his wife Karel; two sons, Jeffrey of Waterloo and Timothy (Jill) of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Angela (Steven) Lewis of Las Vegas, and Jennifer Jones of Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Chad, Brooke and Haley Jones, Joshua, Jake and Jared Jones and Tyler Lewis; his mother Virginia (Ginny) Jones of Nashua; three brothers, Jerry (Alma) Jones of Nashua, Arnie (Deb) Jones of Branson, Mo., and Rodney (Robyn) Jones of Tipton; two sisters, Judy Hatzky of Nashua and Connie Bradshaw of Florida. His father preceded him in death in 1997.

Darlene Mary Brand was born Oct. 16, 1948, in Charles City to Clifford Edward and Florence Anna (Grube) Roberts. She was one of five children born to her parents and was educated in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School in the Class of 1966. Throughout her adult life, Darlene was employed as a day care provider and was also a wonderful homemaker.

Darlene was united in marriage to Ronald F. Brand on Jan. 11, 1992, in Charles City. Darlene was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother.

Some of Darlene’s passions included a tremendous love for her family, children and animals. She always enjoyed having children of all ages around her. Her interests included collecting porcelain dolls, angels, crafts, woodworking, the outdoors and always being family-oriented.

Darlene will be best remembered for being a kind, gentle and very giving woman. Her family describes her as being the “sweetest woman on earth.”

She treasured her time spent with her family. Darlene will be cherished in memory to many who have shared in her life.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Darlene’s life are her husband Ronald F. Barton ‘Bart’ Townsend

Barton “Bart” Townsend, 83, of Charles City, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A memorial service for Barton Townsend will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Paul Wilcox will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later time with a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Barton Allen Townsend was born November 25, 1922, in rural Floyd County, the son of Harold and Gladys (Noah) Townsend. He attended Ballard School in rural Floyd County. In October of 1941, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Bartlett. Out of this union, Evenelle, Elaine, Linda and Rick were born. In 1979, he married Sharon Sweitzer. During his working career Barton was the proprietor of Townsend Electric and self- employed with many other businesses. Barton was a volunteer fireman in Charles City for many years, a member of the Fireman’s Association and lifetime member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion, V.F.W. and Amvets. His loves in life were working, flying airplanes, farming and hunting.

Family members include four children, Evenelle Dann of Dunedin, Fla., Elaine (Curtis) Keifer of Charles City, Linda (Ralph) Smelser of Cedar Falls and Rick (Donna) Townsend of Rochester, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one brother Nolan Townsend of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Marvin and Merlyn Townsend; and a sister, Neoma Brooks.

Winifred Shanks

NORA SPRINGS — Winifred Shanks, 91, of Nora Springs, passed away on Thursday, June 22, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church, 202 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with Reverend Jim Turner and Wendy Johannesen officiating. Burial will be in Rock Grove Cemetery, rural Nora Springs.

Winifred was born to Winfield and Ethel (Ayers) Hart on August 22, 1914, at their farm near Nora Springs. She was the seventh child of seven children. She attended Nora Springs Public School and Hamilton Business College, Mason City. In her youth, she was active in scouting and became an Eagle Scout.

On December 5, 1936, Winifred was united in marriage to Russell F. Shanks. They farmed in the area until their retirement in 1983, upon which they moved to Nora Springs to a home overlooking the Shell Rock River. She enjoyed watching the bald eagles and various birds from her home. Winifred’s hobbies also included gardening and planting flowers. She was a ceramics teacher for many years. Winifred was a long time member of the North Iowa Rock and Mineral Club and went on many camping trip in the West.

She was an active lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church and held many offices in the United Methodist Women’s organizations. She often decorated the church for holidays and special events.

Winifred will be greatly missed by her two sons, Howard (Laura) Shanks, Ames; and Michael (Colleen) Shanks, Nora Springs; six grandchildren, Kevin (Rita) Shanks, Franktown, Col.; Brent (Jackie) Shanks, Ames; Kimberly (Shawn) Majors, Ankeny; Lisa (Chris) Smith, Clear Lake; Julie (Brad) Nelson, Nora Springs; and Brad (Jeannie) Shanks, Nora Springs; and 16 great-grandchildren.

 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, six siblings and her parents.

TILDEN, Neb. — Funeral Services for Larry C. Bromley, age 67, of Tilden, Neb, and formerly of Nashua, Iowa, will be Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Tilden. Pastor Rodger Good will officiate with burial in the Tilden City Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post #170 and VFW Post #7603 of Tilden.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 at Brockhaus-Harlan Funeral Home in Tilden.

Mr. Bromley died Friday at his home in Tilden.

Larry Bromley was born in Nashua on January 30, 193,9 to Charles (Chuck) Bromley and Threasa (Ulrich) Bromely. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church at Floyd. He graduated from Floyd schools in May 1956 and entered the Navy in June 1956. He served until December 1959. On May 23, 1964 he married Marlene Leader of Crofton, Neb., in Vermillion, S.D. Larry started driving truck on January 3, 1960, and, except for a couple of years, drove until he retired on June 9, 2005, because of health reasons. Larry drove for Mayflower of Mason City, Holbrook Trucking of Yankton, S.D, Walsh Mfg. of Charles City and was an owner operator until he started driving for Vulcraft in Norfolk, Neb., in 1984. At the time he retired, he was driving for Burbach Trucking, leased to Bill Graber of Ewing, Neb.

Larry was a member of the American Legion Post #170 in Tilden and the Faith United Methodist Church in Tilden.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene; three sons: Dale and his wife, Connie Bromley, of Yankton, S.D., Mark Bromley of Huntsville, Ala., Kurt and his wife, Emily Bromley, of Tilden; one daughter, Staci Bromley of Tilden; his mother, Tracy Reser of Charles City; and four sisters and their spouses: Shirley and Chris Cordes of Lake View, Ark., Nancy and Ray Norby of Rudd, Judy and Charles Thorson of Charles City, and Carolyn and Jerry Mooberry of Okahumpka, Fla.; one step brother and his wife, Donald and Joan Reser of Aredale, Iowa; a step sister and her husband, Mary Lou and Denny Helmers of Charles City; six grandsons, Kelly, Kody, Kory, Chad, Kaleb and Peyton Bromley; one granddaughter, Karissa Bromley; and a step-granddaughter, Lacey Bromley.

He was preceded in death by his father; an infant brother; and step father, Earl Reser.

NEW HAMPTON — Ruth E. Straw, 58, of New Hampton, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton. The lector will be Kari Huffman. Offertory gifts will be presented by Chris and Staci Dahl.

Interment will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery with J.C. Schnurr, Terry Weigel, Dan Feuling, Tom McDermott, Kevin Kennedy and Terry Shannon as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Ruth’s nieces and nephews, Brian Straw, Mitch Straw, Tony Straw, Zach Soukup, Sybil Soukup, Hans Soukup, Tracy Straw and Tammy Straw.

Ruth was born Sept. 15, 1947, in New Hampton, the daughter of Harry and Clara (Busta) Soukup. She attended St. Joseph grade school and was a 1965 graduate of New Hampton High School. She attended the Patricia Stevens School in Chicago, studying fashion merchandising. Ruth worked at Marshall Fields while in Chicago and then moved to Waterloo, where she worked at New York Fashion.

On May 3, 1969, in Cedar Falls, Ruth married Bill Straw. To this union, two daughters were born. The couple initially lived in Cedar Falls and moved to New Hampton in 1971. Ruth and Bill owned and operated Straw’s Country Store Pizza Kitchen from 1973-1981. Ruth was then employed by the New Hampton school system as the hot lunch supervisor from 1986 until the present. The couple also owns and operates Chaff’s Restaurant in New Hampton. Under an adverse illness, Ruth maintained a loving relationship with her husband, daughters, grandson and her many other friends and family.

 
 

Survivors include her husband, Bill; two daughters, Stephanie (Gary) Maske, Christine Straw, both of Waterloo; a grandson, Carter Dale Maske of Waterloo; one brother, Bob (Betty) Soukup of New Hampton; a sister, Margaret (Hal) Hoge of San Jose, Calif.; one aunt, Therese Busta of Cresco; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James Karl Soukup.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Forrest Keith (Corky) Binger, 83, of Kansas City, Mo. and formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Charles City, Iowa, died Thursday, June 22, 2006 at University Hospital and Clinic, Columbia, Mo., of complications from a stroke.

Private family services and inurnment were held Sunday, June 25, at Mount Moriah Funeral Home in Kansas City.

He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, of Kansas City; five daughters, Penny Brisson of Santa Clara, Calif., Ginna Himschoot (Bob) of Cedar Rapids, Elizabeth Binger (George Dowker) of Niantic, Conn., Polly Binger of Waterloo, Iowa, and Julie Daugherty (Darren) of Cedar Rapids; son Jamie Binger of Oakland, Calif.; a brother, Richard Binger (Barbara) of Cedar Rapids; a niece, Patricia Allard (Robert) of Marion, Iowa; a nephew, Keith Binger of Irving, Texas; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Frances Binger; a brother, Donald and a sister, Virginia.

Forrest was born Feb. 26, 1923, in Charles City, to George and Frances (Brooks) Binger. On April 22, 1978, he was united in marriage to Barbara Hopper. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a 50-year member of the Mt. Herman Masonic Lodge in Cedar Rapids.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. — Dee Ann (Martens) Byrne, 37, of Junction City, Kan., formerly of New Hampton, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at her home.

Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton.

Dee Ann was born on July 28, 1968, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, the daughter of Harlan and Darlene (Springer) Martens. She attended New Hampton Schools. On April 12, 1986, she married Jerry J. Byrne, Charles City. To this union, two daughters were born.

Being the wife of a military man allowed Dee Ann to see much of the country while raising their two daughters. She especially enjoyed living by the ocean. Dee Ann was a loving mother and always made time to volunteer at their children’s schools. She also had three Yorkshire Terriers who brought her great joy.

 
 

Survivors include her husband Jerry of Junction City, Kan.; two daughters, Nichole Byrne, Lawler and Pamela Byrne, Junction City, Kan.; her mother, Darlene Martens, New Hampton; one sister, Deb (Zoe) Zubrod, Lawler; and one grandson, Taylor J.J. Byrne, Lawler.

Preceding her in death was her father Harlan in 1991.

Virginia Lee Lockie Hammel was born April 27, 1931, at Charles City, the daughter of Paul and Amy (Jorgenson) Lockie. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1949. On June 11, 1950, she was united in marriage to Dean L. Hammel at First Methodist Church in Charles City. They farmed in the Charles City area all of their lives. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served in various capacities and where she was known as the “plant lady,” since she has taken care of the plants at the church for the past 28 years. Other memberships included the Cattlewomen’s Association, Hoe and Hope Club, Double Dozen Club, Sewing Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Virginia served for many years as a 4-H leader and judge. Both Virginia and Dean were active in the Floyd County Rural Youth Program. She will be remembered as a very caring, helpful all around friend to all those that knew her. Family was always very important to Virginia and she looked forward to spending time with them especially with her grandchildren. They will remember her as a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother doing all she could to make a home for them.

Living family members include her husband Dean L. Hammel of Charles City; three children and their families, Jerry (Jane) Hammel of Altoona and their children, Ryan and Kevin, Becky (Kevin) McEnany and their daughter, Jessica of Charles City, and Heidi (Paul) Mehmen and their daughter, Katelyn of Charles City; a brother, Gene (Reva) Lockie of Calico Rock, Ark.; along with many nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Jean Lockie.
