Visitation will be Thursday, July 13 from 3-7 p.m. at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be directed to First Congregational Church, 404 Woodbridge St., Nashua, IA 50658 or Hospice of North Iowa, 1003 Gilbert St., Charles City, IA 50616. Online condolences may be left for Gladys’ family at www.hugebackfuneralhome.com.

Gladys Freida Jacobs Strike was born on July 14, 1917, at the family farm in Butler County’s Fremont Township. She was the only girl born to Arthur Herman Jacobs and Mary Elnora Garbes Jacobs, and had three brothers. She attended the Beaver Creek Country School in Butler County for her elementary education. Gladys attended Clarksville High School for two years and boarded with her Uncle Herb and Aunt Lizzie Jacobs. She would go home on the weekends to help her mother with the housework. She transferred to Nashua High School in 1933 to take normal training classes. Her dad thought that she should be a teacher.

She graduated from Nashua High School in 1935 and received her teaching certificate. However, she wrote, “I practice-taught one week and decided teaching wasn’t for me. I just liked to work with my hands.” She did some nursing work and worked as a domestic in several homes.

Gladys was baptized and confirmed at Pleasant Hill Church in rural Nashua and was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Nashua. She belonged to the Women’s Fellowship and was a past president.

Gladys was united in marriage to Verne L. (Bud) Strike on April 3, 1937, in Des Moines, and they set up housekeeping in Nashua. To this union, two daughters and two sons were born.

Gladys worked in the home and took good care of her family, plus she helped her husband with his Standard Oil delivery business. After raising her children, but while the boys were still in school, she started working for Nashua Community Schools in the hot lunch kitchen. In those days, the cooks prepared meals “from scratch” and she loved the work with her hands. She truly enjoyed all the children and was pleased by all the compliments. She was known to reward her grandchildren and their friends with special favors of food. She also knew which kids liked extra potatoes and the high school boys got bigger portions. She worked at school for twenty-seven years with the last several years as food service manager. She retired in 1987 at the age of 70.

She so enjoyed cooking that she would cook at the Girl Scout Camp in rural Charles City during the summer. Gladys and Lorraine Thomason Powers did that for several summers and had a wonderful time.

Gladys was a member of the American School Food Service Association and belonged, at the district level, to the Cedar Rock Food Service Association, where she served a term as president. She was a member of the Rebekah I.O.O.F. Lodge in Nashua until it disbanded and joined the Clarksville Rebekah Lodge #533. She was also a former member of Eastern Star in Nashua.

Gladys enjoyed cooking, baking pies and made special birthday cakes for her children when they were young. She was known to fry chicken for friends in the middle of the night and fried chicken was her favorite food. She also did embroidery and made a set of pillowcases for each child and grandchild for Christmas several years ago. Another Christmas, she crocheted doilies for everyone. Plus, she crocheted baby afghans for all the babies. She had just finished a blanket for her then-unborn great-grandchild, Abigail, and has a few on hand for future babies.

She enjoyed trout fishing with her husband. Family and friends were treated to delicious fish dinners.

Gladys’ family and friends honored her retirement and 70th birthday with a party and golf tournament. Parties and golf tournaments were held on her 75th, 80th and 85th birthdays. The highlight of her 80th birthday was a surprise visit to the farm on which she was born and spent her childhood. The farm is on Greene Road in Butler County and is presently occupied by the Robert Scheidecker family. She was thrilled to be able to explore the house and see her room, plus her brother’s initials were still carved into the corn crib.

Although she worked with her hands all her life, her hands were always very soft — no matter how hot the water was or how harsh the cleaning product. A special talent was wringing out a dish cloth so tightly that it was almost dry. Her soft hands reflected the softness of her nature and the kindness in her heart. Gladys always thought of others before herself. She always showed a genuine interest in each and every member of her family and had the quality to make them feel special. She listened intently to what they had to say and could remember the details of the conversation. She knew the birthdays of all members of her family, and sent a card and letter for every birthday and anniversary, plus a check. These special cards from Grandma Strike will be missed.

Living family members include her children, Marjorie Bullen of Nashua, Mary Ellen (Hal) Parsons of Fairhope, Ala., Stanley (Kay) Strike of Cody, Wyo., Stuart (Sandi) Strike of Urbana and a step-son, Raymond (Fran) Paulsen of Waterloo. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Madeline Tefft Jacobs of Charles City. Gladys has 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, plus several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Gladys in death was her husband Verne on Dec. 31, 1982, and also her parents and brothers Ralph, Forrest and Harold Jacobs, and a sister-in-law, Malita Wefel Jacobs, all of Charles City.

Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua is in charge of arrangements, (641) 435-4134. The family requests memorials be made to First Congregational Church UCC of Nashua or Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City.

He was born on March 1, 1921, in Bradford, the son of Earl C. and Ella A. (Matthews) Hicok. Gerald attended country school at Bassett and then the Ionia school system, where he graduated from high school in 1939. He then worked for a time at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo, before entering the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. On April 6, 1947, Gerald was united in marriage to Georgie Wilson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple began their married life on an 80-acre farm near Ionia. A year later, they moved to a farm southwest of Charles City where they farmed for the next 13 years. In 1961, they moved to their farm three miles north of the Little Brown Church.
