Sheila R. Tegtmeier

Published: Thursday, January 10, 2008

ANKENY — Sheila R. Tegtmeier, 43, of 3906 NW Seasons Court, Ankeny, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at her home in Ankeny.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Friday, Jan. 11, at the First United Methodist Church, 21 3rd St. NW, in Rockford, with the Rev. Kenneth Kent Officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Sheila R. Tegtmeier memorial fund.

Sheila Tegtmeier was born on Sept. 28, 1964, in Mason City, the daughter of Cyrus and Darlene (Arndt) Berk. Sheila grew up on the family farm southwest of Rockford. She attended schools in Rockwell and Rockford and graduated from Rockford Senior High School in 1983. In all of her travels she attended many colleges across the US and in foreign countries.

On Dec. 28, 1985, Sheila was united in marriage to Rory Tegtmeier at the United Methodist Church in Rockford. To this union were born two sons. Rory and Sheila had recently celebrated 22 years of marriage.

For all of her life she was a farm girl at heart, loving animals and once aspired to become a veterinarian. She especially enjoyed raising pigs with her father as a young girl, mucking out the barn and loving on the baby pigs. Instead of becoming a farmer’s wife, she became an Army spouse and traveled the world, faithfully supporting and following her husband through many tours and assignments around the world. Whenever duty called her husband, Sheila dutifully packed the families affects, bundled up the boys and followed Rory wherever the Army sent him. Sheila was the reason for his success. Sheila once made a pair of bets with her husband, saying that he would not only be promoted but that he would also be selected for a prestigious job. She knew him better than he did and she won both bets.

She was fond of boasting that she had moved 16 times and lived in three countries and eight states and had visited twice as many. She always said her favorite countries were Scotland and Ireland.

Sheila enjoyed cross stitching, reading, collecting ceramic pigs, watching movies, taking her boys bowling and volunteering. Sheila was a loving and deeply caring mother to her own children, making sure they wanted for nothing while attending every sporting event and every function. She not only loved her own children but also was actively involved with helping special needs children. She always worked to help and care for special needs children wherever she lived. Sheila was actively involved with Special Olympics; handicapped job skills training and life skills. Wherever she was at she was drawn to the elementary schools where she would work as a Special Education assistant teacher or aide.

She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Sheila is survived by her husband of 22 years, Rory of Ankeny; two beautiful boys, Rory II, of Ankeny and Zachary, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; her mother Darlene Berk, Mason City; father Cyrus Berk, Rockford; sisters Sandy and her husband Ron Goranson, Mason City, Sherry Berk, Mason City, Susan and her husband Bryan Dalton, Martinsville, Ohio; brother Mike Berk, Mason City; mother and father-in-law Sally and Myron Stadtlander, Rockford; two sister-in-laws Sylvia and her husband Paul Hendricks, Ely, Minn., and Carla and her husband Dave Preston of Ankeny; two brother-in-laws Dale and his wife Jacque Tegtmeier, and Kevin and his wife Marla Tegtmeier, Des Moines; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Her grandparents preceded Sheila in death.
