Robert E. Patterson

Robert "Bob" E. Patterson, 67, of 801 Howard St., Charles City, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag and Rev. David Werges officiating. Interment will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City and again one hour prior to service time at the church on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Robert Patterson Memorial Fund to be dispersed to Hospice and the Mercy Cancer Center.

Robert was born July 5, 1935, in Charles City, the son of Jay and Ivy (Luella) Walter. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1954. Robert was united in marriage to Marlys (DeWalle) on Aug. 24, 1957, at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City where he was a member also. Robert enjoyed woodworking, fishing, stock car racing, and coin collecting. He loved to spend time with his family, especially with his grandkids. Robert will be missed dearly by family and friends who shared his life.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Marlys; two sons; Quinn Patterson and his wife, Renee of Sigourney, and Kevin Patterson and his wife, Tina of Charles City; one brother, William "Bud" Patterson and his wife, Marge, of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Donna Patterson of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Jodee, Dylan, Megan, and Emily; several nieces and nephews.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doris Joslin, and Mildred White; one brother, Dale Patterson.

John Law

John Law, 65, a resident of 607 Cedar Street, Charles City, died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral services for John Law will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Monsignor Stanley Hayek, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Friday.

John Bruce Law was born Dec. 5, 1937, at Fort Dodge, the son of John R. and Monica (Rapp) Law. He graduated from the Riceville High School in 1956. John served his country in the United States Army from 1959 to 1965. On July 10, 1959, he was united in marriage to Bernadette Halligan at Osage. Bernadette died on December 14, 1979. In August of 1987 he was united in marriage to Norma Hansen. Norma died in 1992. John worked all of his life as a truck driver. Just before his retirement he was employed at Allied Construction. John enjoyed playing slot machines, cards, visiting friends, and spending time with his family. His mechanical abilities were seen as he worked with his hands and in being a general handyman.

Living family members include five children, Vicki Krumwiede (David) of Charles City, Bob Law (Maria) of Cedar Falls, Susan Bouska (David) of Las Vegas, Nev., and John Law (Jennifer), and Tim Law both of Cedar Falls; fifteen grandchildren, Sherri Aikey, Lisa Krumwiede, Billie Jo Law, Megan Law, Zachary Law, Nicole Palomarez, Krystal Law, Tiffany Frickson, Brittany Frickson, Jordan Nieman, Josie Law, Benjamin Bouska, Matthew Bouska, Sarah Bouska, and Vincent Law; two great granddaughters, Justine Breitbach, and MacKenzie Kyhl; and three sisters, Ann Marcalus (Fred) of Jewell, Linda Bartels (William) of Dyserville, and Marjorie Young (Gene) of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, and three sons, David in 1998, and Steven and Brian in infancy.

Troy Knapp

Troy Knapp, 84, of Charles City, formerly of Nashua, passed away Monday morning, Dec. 30, 2002 at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City of complications following a stroke suffered Dec. 25, 2002.

Funeral services are pending at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua.


Blanche Elliot

Blanche Elliott, 92, a former resident of 3043 170th Street, Charles City, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Colonial Manor at Elma.

A funeral Mass for Blanche Elliott will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday where St. Michael's Circle will recite the Rosary at 4:30 and where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass at the church.

Blanche Pauline Rouse Elliott was born June 26, 1910 at Elma the daughter of William and Pauline (Schrieber) Rouse. She graduated from the Colwell High School and from the University of Northern Iowa. On June 1, 1933, she was united in marriage to Laurence Elliott. Blanche taught in country schools and then at Nashua for five years, and at Evansdale until her retirement in 1972. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Michael's Circle, Colwell Betterment Club, Colwell Culture Club, named the Outstanding Senior Citizen by NIACC, served on the Elderbridge State Board, received the Governor's Volunteer Award, ran the Little Red Schoolhouse at the Chautauqua Guest Homes, and helped start the Senior Citizens Meals at Colwell. Blanche enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, bowling, traveling, playing cards, attending sporting events, and spending time with her family.

Living family members include a daughter, Laurna Schlader (Gene) of Charles City; three sons, Melberne Elliott (Darlene) of Storm Lake, Kenneth Elliott (Arlene) and Gary Elliott (Mary) both of Charles City; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; a special first cousin, Bill Elliott (Patty) of Del Ray Beach, FL; four brothers, Jim Rouse of Shell Rock, Fred Rouse (Carolyn) of San Francisco, Calif., Charles Rouse (Gen) of Fremont, Calif., and Francis Rouse (Elaine) of Palto Alto, Calif., a half brother, Ron Huffman (Jean) of Ventura; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Rouse of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2001, a granddaughter Sandra Kay Elliott, and three brothers Leo, Dan and Joe Rouse.

Marvin V. Bremer

LACROSSE, Wisc. - Marvin Varnell Bremer, 87, of La Crosse, Wis., died Friday Nov. 29, 2002, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis. He was born April 5, 1915, in Charles City to Henry and Lydia (Fritcher) Bremer. He attended local schools, graduating from high school as valedictorian in 1933. He then became associate manager of Lanz Food Market in Charles City. He married Pauline Drewelow on July 6, 1937, at Crown Point, Ind. Marvin and Pauline celebrated their 65th anniversary with family and neighbors in their home July 6, 2002.

Marvin moved the family to La Crosse, Wis. and worked in the tool and die department for 30 years at the Trane Co. before his retirement in 1985.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline; son. Dennis of La crosse, Wis.; daughters, Patricia (Bernard) Frazier of Sparta, Wis., and Nancy (John) Witt of Spillville; grandchildren, Jackie (Larry) Stanley of Fenton, Mo., Mark (Robin) Frazier of Grand Marais, Minn., Brenda Frana of Lawler, Randy Witt of Guttenberg, Richard (Debbie) Witt of Cresco, Angie (Marti) Leiren of Frankville and Andrew and Alaina Bremer, both of La Crosse Wis.; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

His parents; a sister, Marie; and brother Clarence, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at 10:30 a.m., at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. The Rev. Roger Hjelle officiated and burial was at 11 a.m. on Tuesday Dec. 3, 2002, at Boyd Cemetery near New Hampton.

Memorials were given to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Robert Patterson

Joanne (Cockrum) Cross Shaw

Joanne (Cockrum) Cross Shaw, 73, a Clark County, Wash. resident for over 38 years, and formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 of cancer in Battle Ground, Wash.

Mrs. Shaw was born June 29, 1929 in Osage, Iowa. Her maiden name was Cockrum. Mrs. Shaw and her first husband, Cecil C. Cross, also from Charles City, lived in the Charles City area for many years until re-locating to California and Washington State.

Mrs. Shaw worked for Jim Sorenson Insurance in Vancouver, and Pacific Wood Treating in Ridgefield. She enjoyed traveling, reading, dancing, and playing cards. She will be remembered for her upbeat personality, sense of humor, and enjoyment of family and friends.

Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by her first husband Cecil C. Cross, in 1968, and her second husband Clifford Shaw in 1989. Survivors include her daughter Brenda Carrasco of Brush Prairie, Wash. and two sons, Bruce Cross of Battle Ground, Wash. and Brad Cross of Longview, Wash. and six grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and many friends.

A celebration of life memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at Layne's Funeral Home in Battle Ground, at 2 pm. Davie's Cremation and Burial Services handled cremation.

Troy L. Knapp

Troy L. Knapp, 84, of Charles City and formerly of Nashua, passed away Monday morning, Dec. 30, 2002, at North Iowa Hospice in Mason City following complications from a stroke suffered Dec. 25, 2002.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Trinity Methodist Church in Charles City with burial to follow in Oak Hill Cemetery at Nashua. Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the Church on Friday. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Troy Knapp was born Oct. 4, 1918 in rural Nashua to Vern and Grace (Harmon) Knapp. He received his education from Maple Grove Country School and served as a sergeant during World War II, where he was injured in a B-29 mission over the Asiatic-Pacific Territory.

He married Anna Conner on Jan. 12, 1948 in Charles City. He worked for Charles City Implement and Nashua Implement as a Parts and Service Manager. Troy also farmed, and retired in 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Anna M. Knapp, of Charles City; one son, Lonnie (Nancy) Knapp of Hemet, Calif.; one daughter, Shirley (Joel) Rasmussen of Clear Lake; five grandchildren: Eric, Jaime and Dusty Knapp, Adam and Alicia Rassmussen.

Troy was preceded in death by three brothers: Lowell, Dale and Vernon, Jr.; five sisters: Alice Johnson, Avis Downs, Ethel Allison, Lucille Pevestorf and Neva Ullrich.

John Reints

CLARKSVILLE - John Reints, age 90, Clarksville, passed away Dec. 25, 2002. at Waverly Municipal Hospital of natural causes.

Services were held Dec. 28, 2002 at Pleasant Valley United Church of Christ in Clarksville, with the Rev. Anne Sunday officiating. Burial was at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

John Jacob Reints was born the son of Harm and Lena Schrage Reints on Sep. 22, 1912, near Clarksville in Butler County. He was baptized Oct. 27, 1912, and confirmed April 10, 1927, in the St. John United Church of Christ, rural Nashua. He attended rural school near his home.

John married Hilda Schilling on Jan. 31, 1935 in the Pleasant Valley First United Church of Christ, rural Clarksville. He was a member of Pleasant Valley First United Church of Christ all his adult life and had served on the Church Council as Treasurer. John and Hilda farmed and raised pigs, northeast of Clarksville for over 40 years, until the fall of 1976 when they retired and moved to their present home in Clarksville.

He enjoyed farming which was his life's work. He liked to play cards with friends and enjoyed fishing trips. Bus tours in early retirement were fun for John and Hilda. Most of all, John loved being with his family and especially the grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife, Hilda of Clarksville; one daughter, Delores (Eugene) Wedeking, Nashua; two sons, David (Jackie) Reints, Allison and Duane (Linda) Reints, Clarksville; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lena Hinders, Waverly; one sister-in-law, Elsie Reints, Clarksville and many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents; four brothers, Sievert, Abel, Datert and Harm Reints; and one sister Elizabeth Wedeking.

Charles H. Martin

Charles H. Martin, 89, of 807 5th St., Charles City, died Thursday Jan. 2, 2003 at the Salsbury Baptist Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at the First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Ln., Charles City. Officiating will be the Rev. Ruth Yeaton. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Family will greet friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday morning.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorial to the Charles Martin Memorial Fund.

Charles was born August 9, 1913 the son of George W. and Helen F. (Seelye) Martin in Mason City. He later graduated from the Charles City High School.

Charles served his country in the United States Army Air Corp. from January of 1933 until his honorable discharge in January of 1936. He later re-enlisted in the United States Navy in which he served from Feb. 29, 1944 until Dec. 12, 1945, during this time he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands.

On October 2, 1935 Charles was united in marriage to Martha Tash in Mount Clemens, Mich. To this union three children were born.

Charles ended his working career as an electrician at Salsbury. He retired in 1975 after devoting 23 years of service.

Charles was very devoted to God, his wife, his children, and his country in that order. Charles also believed in volunteering his time as a Scouting Assistant in which he earned his Order of the Arrow.

Mr. Martin was a life member of the VFW, American Legion, the Floyd County Historical Society, and the Seelye Genealogical Society. He was also a member of the 40 and 8 , and the First Baptist Church in which he served on the board of Deacons, and Trustees. Charles was a past president of the Men's Brotherhood, Floyd Co. Civil Defense Director, and a 15-year veteran of the Floyd Co. Sheriffs Reserves. He also enjoyed being a swimming instructor at the YMCA for many years.

Charles spent his free time playing cards, working with his H.O. trains, and going fishing and camping. Charles was very fond of traveling and often spoke of their trip to the Hawaiian Islands.

Those thankful for having shared in his life include his wife Martha, three children, David Martin and his wife Elfriede of Olympia, Wash., Sharon Sylvester Jorgensen and her husband Charles of Clear Lake, and Mary Slifka and her husband Kenneth of Grundy Center, 8 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, one brother George R. Martin, one granddaughter, Sherri Cosgriff, one great great grandson, and a son in law, Gary Sylvester.

Harry Johnson

FARGO, N.D. - Harry Roy Johnson, age 84, Riverview Place, Fargo, N.D. died Sun., Jan. 5, 2003 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, N.D. The Funeral Mass will be Wed.,Jan. 8, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. in Church of the Nativity, Fargo, N.D. Burial will be in Casselton City Cemetery, Casselton, N.D.

There will be visitation today, Jan. 7, 2003, from 5-7 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, N.D. Visitation will continue on Wed., Jan. 8, 2003, at 12:30 p.m. in Church of the Nativity.

Harry Roy Johnson was born Oct. 4, 1918 on the family farm at Casselton, N.D., the son of Wanda and Roy Johnson. He attended school in Casselton and graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1940. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, co-captain of the football team, and was chosen class athlete for two years. He was also a member of Saddle and Sirloin Club and Interfraternity Council.

After graduation, he worked for the Federal Land Bank until enlisting in the Navy on Jan. 29, 1942. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant and served two years aboard a sub-chaser in the North Atlantic and served two years on an attack transport in the South Pacific. Upon separation from the service on March 31, 1946, he returned to Fargo and joined the staff of Cargill Inc. in Minneapolis and Fargo.

He married Mary Catherine Johlfs on June 14, 1948 in Marshall, Minn. and they had lived in Fargo since that time. He worked for Interstate Seed Company and Amchem Products which was bought by Union Carbide. In 1981, he was named "Outstanding Sales Manager" for Union Carbide. He retired from Union Carbide in 1984.

He will be missed so much, but the memories we have of him will be cherished forever. His family continues to hear stories of his lifelong and behind-the-scenes support of high school and college athletics.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother Frank, and an infant son, Robert.

He is survived by his daughters, Cathy (Scott) Dillon, Morrisville, N.C and Margaret Jensen, Charles City; three granddaughters, Kate (Chad) Jensen Ford, Megan (Stuart) Dillon Dudley and Molly Dillon; a sister, Margaret Wasche, Fargo, N.D. and two brothers, Ralph (Alice) and Roy (Louise), both Fargo, N.D.

Paul Cheney

GREENE - Paul Cheney, 85, of Greene, died Mon., Jan. 6, 2003 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Funeral Services will be held Fri., Jan. 10, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. The Rev. Paul Uzel will be officiating with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thur., Jan. 9, 2003 with a scripture and time of remembering at 7 p.m. at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene.

Memorials may be directed to the Paul Cheney Memorial fund in care of the family.

Dorothy Bell

NORA Springs - Dorothy Marie Bell, 92, of Nora Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at the Nora Springs Care Center. Her funeral mass will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 First Avenue NW, Rockford, with Reverend Craig E. Steimel officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until service time Saturday at the church.

Dorothy was born Feb. 27, 1910 in Garner, a daughter of Lawrence and Anna (Sullivan) Tobin. The family later moved to Charles City where in 1929, Dorothy was united in marriage to Burnett "Brownie" Alderman. To this union three children were born. Mr. Alderman passed away in 1945. Dorothy was united in marriage to Harley Bell on Dec. 14, 1947 in Charles City and to their union three children were born. Mr. Bell passed away in 1980.

Dorothy was a lifelong homemaker whose great joy was her family. She also enjoyed tending to her many large gardens and was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City.

Dorothy is survived by her six children, Marvin J. Alderman of Mason City, Mrs. Eddy (Elizabeth) Scott of Mason City, Mrs. Don (Marjorie) Weiner of Rockford, Gloria Baltes of Charles City, Mrs. Joseph (Joyce) Theilen of Nora Springs, and James Bell and Bonnie of Brighton. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Michael Tobin of Nora Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, an infant daughter, Norma Jean, three sisters, one brother, and a grandchild, David Weiner.

Memorials may be directed to the Dorothy M. Bell Memorial Fund.

Harry Sorensen

PROTIVIN - Harry T. Sorensen, 72, of Protivin died suddenly, Wednesday morning, Jan. 8, 2003, at his home of natural causes. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Lawler with Rev. Peter Peterson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hugeback Funeral Home in New Hampton was in charge of arrangements.


Gary "Ringo" John Graham

Gary John Graham, 62, the son of Minnie (Tumilson) and William J. Graham, Sr., was born Jan. 3, 1941, in Rockford, and died Thursday evening, Jan. 9, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, due to complications of diabetes. Gary's life will be celebrated 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church, 205 1st Ave. NW, Rockford, with the Rev. Kenneth Kent officiating.

Visitation will be held Monday at Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home in Rockford from 4 -- 7 p.m. and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Gary J. Graham Memorial Fund.

"Ringo," as he was fondly known by many, lived in the Rockford area all his life, most currently at 402 2nd Ave. NW.

Gary received his education and graduated in 1959 from Rockford Community Schools. While in high school, Gary was known for his athletic ability, achieving notoriety on both the football and baseball teams. Opposing teams feared his talent when he stood on the pitching mound, as he was often one who threw "no hitters!" Gary provided well and worked hard for his family. He was employed at Trettin's Hatchery, Rockford Brick and Tile and White Farm Equipment in Charles City, where he worked until he retired due to ill health in 1969. He met his wife, Connie, while in high school and the couple were married on April 6, 1963 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They celebrated 39 married years together and experienced many great memories, such as roller-skating in Clear Lake and at the "portable rink" in Rockford. He was a very talented and graceful skater.

Gary and Connie were fans of country music and frequently attended dances. Gary so loved country music that he listened to it daily until his death. His favorite music entertainers were Vince Gill, Freddie Fender and Johnny Cash. Three of his special songs was "Look At Us," "Before The Last Teardrop Falls," and "Go Rest High On That Mountain." Throughout his life, some of Gary's interests and leisure time included, small game hunting, "cat-fishing" with his Dad, shopping with Connie, his dog, Rascal, and having coffee with his former co-workers from White Farm Equipment. He will be well remembered for his great sense of humor and surrounding himself with wit and laughter. His sons, William and Robert have fond memories of fishing trips with their Dad in Northern Minnesota. Gary's family and friends spent several summers at Little Island Lake and Chippewa Forest in Minnesota. Black bears occasionally entertained them while vacationing and they enjoyed special time and memories together while staying in the cabins, secluded 25 miles from the nearest town His grandchildren were extremely special and important to Gary as he will be greatly and sadly missed by his five grandchildren, Lacey, Kaleb, Shawn, Zachery and Kristina.

Gary is survived by his wife, Connie; his two sons, William Graham and friend, Mary; and Robert Graham and wife, Cindy; his mother, Minnie Graham; his brother, William Graham, Jr. and wife, Sharon; special aunt, Ida Roberts; special family friend, Jeanne Sigler; and his five grandchildren, all of Rockford. Many nieces and nephews also survive him.

His father, William J. Graham, Sr., his maternal and paternal grandparents, and two brother-in-laws, Jerry and Elmer Hewitt have preceded him in death.

Paul Becker, 84, of Nashua, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 10, 2003, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City of natural causes.

Paul was born Dec. 7, 1918 on the family farm west of Nashua in Floyd County to Frank and Ida (Heise) Becker. He received his education from country schools and graduated from Nashua High School in 1936.

Paul served his country as a Tech 5 in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Rhineland and Central Europe from 1942 to 1946. He farmed his entire life.

Paul is survived by one brother-in-law, Guy Lines, Sr., of Nashua; two nephews: Duane (Betty) Lines and Guy (Donna) Lines, Jr., all of Nashua; and by several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Hilda Lines, Renetta Becker and Pauline Becker.

Vada Alice Jones Loomer was born June 18, 1907 in Chickasaw County, the daughter of Jacob and Araminta (Carter) Jones. She received her education from rural Chickasaw County country schools. On Aug. 24, 1926, she was united in marriage to Walter Loomer at Charles City. They resided all their lives in Charles City. She was a member of the Homemakers Club.

Living family members include a daughter, Norma Breckenridge (Gail) of Louisville, KY; a son-in-law, Doug Havlik of Cedar Rapids; fifteen grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.

Her parents, husband in 1984, a daughter, Helen Havlik, two sons, Donald Jones and John Loomer, and four brothers, Harry, Arnold, Neal, and Victor Jones preceded her in death.

ALAMO, TEXAS - Donna Marie (Earle) Cook died at her home in Alamo, Texas on Jan. 4, 2003. Funeral services were held January 9, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Weslaco,Texas.

Donna was born on March 6, 1933, in Jackson, Minn., and lived in many other states and countries. She vacationed in even more, as traveling was one of her greatest enjoyments.

She had a love for nature, especially her flowers and birds. Donna had a zest for life. She listened to all types of music and it was not uncommon to find her dancing, even on roller skates.

She was always willing and wanting to learn so she became a brown belt in judo and graduated from college, on the deans list, as a pharmacy technician.

Donna relaxed by sewing, stain glassing, gardening, and many other hobbies.

May her dedication to her belief that one day she would rest in the arms of our Lord bring comfort to all.

Donna was preceded in death by her mother, Katie; father, Ellis; step-father, Harold and son, David.

She is survived by her husband, Roger; sister, Jean; brother, Bob; daughters, Margene, Karen, Lorry; son, Chris; step-children, Lori, Ginny, Sandy; grandchildren, Jill, Jeromy, Paul, Sudipta, Chaselyn; step-grandchildren, Beau, BJ, Blake, Megan, Austin, Alex, Hannah, Chelsea, Joshua; greatgrandchildren, Sierrah, Gavyn, Hailey, Drake, Douglas; her cat, Trouble; and her best friends Dennis and Rita.

Donna is also survived by her sister-in-law Gladys and Wayne Feldman of Greene; and her brothers-in-law Robert and Karen Cook, and Louis (and the late Ruth) Koenigsfeld, all of Charles City.

OSAGE - Luella R. (Newton) Hoisington, age 86, of Osage died Saturday Jan. 18, 2002 at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage. Funeral Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at the First Baptist Church in Osage with the Rev. Roger Davis officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before services at the church.

She was born Feb. 22, 1916 in Osage, the daughter of Roy and Arlie (Taylor) Fish. Luella was educated in the Osage schools and graduated from Osage High School. She was united in marriage to Howard Newton on Jan. 1, 1939, in her parent's home near Osage. They farmed S.E. of Osage. Howard died in 1989. Luella was united in marriage to Vernon Hoisington on May 31, 1992 at First Baptist Church in Osage. Vernon died in 1996.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in church choir and served on various church boards. She enjoyed playing the piano, embroidering and spending time with her family.

She is survived by 2 daughters; Karen Koethke and husband Allen of St. Ansgar and their children; James Bruggeman and his children: Amanda and Samantha; Robin Bless (Doug) and their children: Jonathon, Jacob and Jesse; Noreen Fink and her husband Robert of Osage and their children; Steve Fink (Lori) and their children: Alyssa, Caleb and Kylee; David Fink (Shirley) and their children: Matthew, Aaron, Andrew; Step-daughter: Carol Decklever and husband Dale of Osage; 2 Step-sons: Lee Hoisington of Orchard; Howard Hoisington and his wife Myrna of Orchard; 1 brother: Dean Fish of Aloha, Ore. and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren

Victor Praska, 87, a resident of 1513 Bailey Street, Charles City, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for Victor Praska was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Rev. Walter Brunkan, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, celebrated the Mass. Burial was at 1:30 p.m. in Mount Calvary Cemetery at Alta Vista.

Victor James Praska was born November 17, 1915, at home on the farm near Alta Vista, the son of John and Anna (Koudelka) Praska. He received his education at the Deerfield rural school and at Alta Vista. On May 2, 1939, he was united in marriage to Rose Komarek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Protivin. They farmed the "homeplace" until retiring in 1977 at which time they moved to Charles City. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Catholic Order of Foresters. Victor enjoyed fishing, playing cards, attending area church picnics, and visiting with everyone.

Living family members include his children, Jane Pitzen (Gene) of Stacyville, and Don Praska (Karen) of Charles City; eleven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; two step great granddaughters; and a sister, Marcella Meirick of Alta Vista.

His parents, beloved wife Rose in 1978, two brothers, Emil and Ralph Praska, and three sisters, Rose Chihak, Lucy Berka, and Florence Vick preceded him in death.

Warren Ruesch

Warren Ernest Ruesch, 81, the son of Gena (Johnson) and Ernest Ruesch, was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Medford, Wisc., and died Sunday morning, (Jan. 19, 2003) at Risen Son Christian Village, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Warren and his wife, Margaret "Peggy," moved to 3000 Risen Son Blvd. Apt.# 305 in Council Bluffs in 1999.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 705 3rd Ave., Charles City with Rev. Irving Sandberg officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 at the church prior to the service. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. The family requests memorial expressions to be directed to the Messiah Lutheran Church.

Warren graduated in 1939 from Medford (Wisc.) High School. While attending school, he was the lightweight member of the boxing team. He attended the University of Wisconsin, met his future wife the final semester of his senior year, and graduated with a degree in journalism. Warren and Margaret "Peggy" (Erickson) were married, Sept. 5, 1948, in Pigeon Falls, Wisc. Warren utilized his degree throughout his employment career beginning as publisher at the New Glarus Post in New Glarus, Wisc. Later he became the owner and editor of that newspaper. He also worked at the American Scientific Labs in Madison, Wisc., as a science writer, eventually transferring to the position of advertising manager. In 1963, Warren and his family moved to Charles City, Iowa, from Madison, where he was the advertising manager at Salsbury Laboratories in communications, formally retiring in 1984.

Warren was honorably discharged upon completing five years of service to his country. He was a W.W.II Army veteran serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the European Theatre. Warren was a former member of the American Legion Post #164 in Charles City.

Some of Warren's interests and leisure activities included painting landscape pictures, tent-camping trips with his family to Peninsula Park, Wisc., carving wood into folk and animated characters, and traveling nationally and internationally with Peggy. Some of their great memory vacations were to Sweden, Norway, Alaska, Norway, Hawaii, Switzerland, London and Hawaii. Both also enjoyed time in the kitchen cooking "lefse." Warren was known for being gentle, kind, and faithful to his church. He was blessed with a great sense of humor. Warren's sons fondly remember their Dad answering many a "How do you?" questions when they were very young. They always looked to him, as if he should know all the answers.

Warren is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret "Peggy" Ruesch of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his two sons, Jack Ruesch and wife, Gloria of Council Bluffs, and James Ruesch and wife, Alisa of Baltimore, Md.; his brother, Lloyd Ruesch and wife, Mae of Grants Pass, Ore.; and two sisters, Frances Merwin of Abbotsford, Wisc.; and Marian Merwin of West Bend, Wisc.. He will also be sadly missed by his grandsons, Eric Ruesch and Jakob Ruesch and many other relatives and friends.

NASHUA - August C. "Pete" Buckel, 85, of Nashua passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 21, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City of cancer.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Military rites will be conducted by the Nashua V.F.W. Post #6792.

Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

August was born on June 4, 1917, on the family farm near Plainfield in Bremer County, the son of Frank and Grace (Marcks) Buckel. He attended rural country school through the eighth grade. On Oct. 12, 1948, August was united in marriage to Mildred Usher at the Little Brown Church near Nashua. He was employed with Boviea Construction as a truck driver for ten years, then Chickasaw County Road Maintenance until retiring in 1982. August served with the 133rd Infantry during WWII, where he received the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred L. Buckel, on Aug. 8, 1990; a step-son, Dale O'Neill; his parents; five brothers: Clifford, Robert, Francis, William, and John Buckel; two sisters: Gertrude Oleson and Beulah Buckel.

He is survived by two sons: Francis (Susan) Buckel of Iowa Falls and Charles (Julie) Buckel of Ellsworth, Wis.; two daughters: Marian (Charles) Johnson of Waverly and Mary White of Nashua; one sister: Marie Zwanziger of Waverly; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Richard L. Hennagir

DUBUQUE -- Richard L. Hennagir, 71, formerly of Dubuque, died of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) on Monday, Jan. 20, 2003 at home. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 23 at St. Raphael's Cathedral with the Rev. Wayne Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West.

Dick was born on Sept. 26, 1931, in Charles City, son of Alfred Ray and Myrtle Genevieve Lucian Hennagir. He was raised in Charles City, graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College and Loras College. He was a Navy veteran having served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. He married Peg Stark on June 7, 1958 at Christ the King Church in Dayton. From 1957 until the present, Dick was the owner of the Life Insurance Agency. He won many awards and was a member of Continental Western's Hall of Fame. He loved the insurance business. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish for 30 years where he was a lector and for eight years a volunteer coach for the junior high basketball team. As a member of St. Raphael's Cathedral, he served on the parish council and as an usher. Dick was a founding member of the 440 Club.

He was an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years of service. He belonged to the Wahlert Century Club and Booster Club, and for many years helped with the Wahlert summer basketball program. In 1994, he received a Wahlert High School volunteer service award. Dick was a board member of the Dubuque I Club. He sponsored many basketball teams in the City League. He was on the All-Tournament selection team for the NCBT and was chairman of the Clarke Classic Selection Committee. He enjoyed all sports and many times he said, "Life is for the Birds" meaning Wahlert Golden Eagles, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Saint Louis Cardinals. Dick was very devoted to his family, his friends and his Catholic faith.

Living family members include his wife, Peg, of Dubuque; a daughter, Angela and her two children, Jeff and Steven Tschiggfrie of Dubuque; another daughter, Mary Pat (Michael) Schulte and their two children, Grace and Ella of Cedar Rapids; a son, Christopher and his daughter, Katie of LaCrosse, Wis.; son John of Columbia, Mo.; three sisters, Phyllis (Dick) Knudslien of Virginia, Minn.; Joan Fisher of Kalona; and Mary Lou (Bob) Hildebrand of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law, Bonita LaBee of Dubuque and Amy Hennagir of Charles City, as well as many nieces and nephews.

His parents, two brothers, Donald and Alan Hennagir, and a brother-in-law, Harry Fisher, preceded him in death.

The family would like to thank the many friends and relatives who helped with his care. A special thank you to his friends, Jim Kunnert and Denny and Cleo Ann Marshall who spent many days with him during the past two and a half years.

Elizabeth "Bette" Bennett

Elizabeth "Bette" Bennett, 80, a resident of 1706 Owen Street, Charles City, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Woodwinds Health Campus, Woodbury, Minn.

A funeral mass for Bette Bennett will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Monsignor Stanley Hayek, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday where St. Anthony's Circle will recite the Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Elizabeth Carol Holland Bennett was born Feb. 20, 1922, in Charles City, the daughter of Edward and Ida (Greenwood) Holland. She graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in 1940. Bette worked for the county attorney and at the employment office at the Oliver Corporation. On July 4, 1953, she was united in marriage to Richard Bennett at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Bette was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Anthony's Circle. Bette enjoyed spending time with her family, being part of church activities, cooking, and sewing.

Living family members include her husband, Richard Bennett of Charles City, two daughters, Maria (Mike) Westfall and Nancy Bennett both of Woodbury, Minn.; two grandchildren, Katie and Eric Westfall; a sister, Marjorie (E. Smith) Reed of Wallingford, Conn., and several cousins including Margaret Holland of Charles City.

Her parents, and a sister, Jean Holland, preceded her in death.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the American Lung Association, or the American Diabetes Association.


Irene Vaala

NEW HAMPTON - Irene G. Vaala, age 93, of New Hampton died Wednesday Jan. 22, 2003 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, New Hampton with Rev. Harvey Abrahamson officiating. Interment will be in the Saude Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lawler.

George Joseph Naumann, Sr., was born May 24, 1924, in Floyd County, the son of George and Rose (Scheu) Naumann. He received his education at the Roseville school. On Aug. 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Esther A. Lawless at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville. The couple farmed south of Charles City until their retirement in the late 1980's at which time they moved into Charles City. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, Heritage Club, and the Democratic Party. Among his favorite pastimes were birdwatching, spending time outdoors, having a cup of coffee with his friends, conversations about politics, and taking pleasure in his grandchildren.

Living family members include five daughters; Mary Jane (Ken) Akin of Rogers, Minn., Veronica (Gary) Lack of Nora Springs, Rita (Rick) Bozwell of Rockford, Ill., Patricia (Phil) Davis of Agency, and Angela Ethington and fiancŽ Brad Greimann of Sheffield; two sons, George Naumann, Jr. of Charleston, S.C., and special friend Betty McDonald of Charles City, and Al (Cindy) Naumann of Charleston, S.C.; 26 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren; two daughter-in-laws, Joanne Naumann of Marshalltown and Kathy (Mark) Moore of Rudd; two brothers, Bernard (Edith) Naumann of Mason City and Leo (Ursula) Naumann of Germany; and three sisters: Mary Louise Naumann of Clear Lake, Agnes Whitmore of California and Ruth Cook of Des Moines.

His parents, wife Esther on Dec. 8, 2002, two sons; Thomas and James Naumann; a grandson, Daniel Nixt and a sister, Rose Marie (Kenneth) Marzen preceded him.

GREENE - Funeral services for Cleo Mead Davis, 84, of 523 North Fourth St., Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. Cleo M. Mead Davis

GREENE - Funeral services for Cleo M. Mead Davis, 84, of 523 North Fourth Street, Greene, will be today, Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Cleo Mae Detra was born June 11, 1918, in Greene a daughter of Walter and Hazel (Heidenwirth) Detra and died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

She received her education at the Greene public schools graduating in 1935. She also attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. On Sept. 15, 1940, she was united in marriage to James Edward Mead at her parent's home in Greene. The following year the couple started farming East of Greene. In 1952 they moved into town. She was employed in the Butler County Auditor's office, secretary of Temple Engineering in Greene, and worked for the family owned Mead Drug Store in Greene. She also worked for the Flower Shop in Greene for several years.

Following her husband's death on July 12, 1989, she continued to make her home in Greene and cared for her mother. She was united in marriage to Darrell Davis on June 1, 1995 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. Cleo and Darrell enjoyed their winters in Mesa, Ariz. and going dancing.

Cleo's family was her number one priority. Her family will remember her as a very gracious hostess and a great cook. Her cooking, and the memories of the flavors, smells, and warmth from her kitchen will never be forgotten. She actively supported her sons in their school activities and was a Den Mother in Cub Scouts. Her interests included going on family fishing trips in Northern Minnesota and Canada, and playing golf. Music played an important part in her life, having sung duets with her sister Beth, and being in the church choir and the Greene Community Chorus for 25 years.

She was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church and the U.P.W; Order of the Eastern Star, Ladies Embroidery Club, Greene Woman's Club, the Birthday Club, and several Bridge Clubs. She served on the Rose Hill Cemetery Board and the Election Board for many years.

Those thankful for having shared her life include her husband Darrell of Greene; three sons: Michael (Karen) Mead of Stanton, Steven (Jo) Mead of Storm Lake, Philip (Rita) Mead of Wenatchee, Wash.; eight grandchildren: Kimberly (David) Thomas of West Des Moines, Michelle (Timothy) Salley of Farmington Hills, Mich., Timothy Mead and his fiance Jody Westhoff of West Des Moines, Joshua Mead of Minneapolis, Minn., Marla Mead of Washington, D.C., David Mead of Ames, Dana Mead of Kodiac Island, Ark., and Matthew Mead of Seattle, Wash.; three great-grandchildren: Samuel Thomas, Nicholas Thomas, Carter Salley. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She leaves to join her husband James Mead, her parents, and one sister Beth Dralle.

Dorothy L. Sigler Bartelt

Mason City - Dorothy L. Sigler Bartelt, 91, of 1027 Third Street NE, died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003 at 1:30 pm at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street NE, Mason City, with Reverend Scott Duffus of St. James Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd. Visitation will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the Dorothy L. Sigler Bartelt Memorial Fund, 424 Second Street NE, Mason City.

Dorothy was born Dec. 17, 1911 in New Sharon, a daughter of Guy and Bertha (Mullen) Jenkins. She lived and attended school in the Rudd area until her marriage to Martin B. Sigler on March 1, 1930 in Charles City. They lived in the Rudd area, where Dorothy was a homemaker, until Martin's death in 1957. After his death, Dorothy worked as a nurses aid in Nora Springs for several years. In 1961, she was united in marriage to Paul E. Bartelt. They lived in Mason City, where Dorothy also worked as a nurses aid at several different care centers. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, quilting, and embroidery, reading the newspaper comics, and watching her favorite soap operas on TV.

Dorothy is survived by two children, Maxine Parker of Charles City and Martin D. Sigler and his wife, Beverly, of Las Vegas, Nev., a son-in-law, Nick Kantaris of Mason City, and 13 grandchildren, Starla, Dana, Jerry, Brent, Michelle, and Glade Parker, Tami Cleghorn, Tim, Lonnie, and Natasha Sigler, Michael Kantaris, Nancy Linderman, and Angela Kantaris. She is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren, Brock, Brandan, Alohna, Heather, Haley, Lindsay, Larissa, Casey, Ryan, Benjamin, Tyler, Trenton, Renae, Casondra, Levi, Dallas, Brad, Stephanie, Steven, and Vanessa, and two great-great-grandchildren, Skyler and Trevor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, an infant daughter, Beulah Mae, a son, Larry Sigler, a daughter, Connie Kantaris, a son-in-law, Gerald Parker, three sisters, Viola Sigler, Vera Hansen, and Mildred Welshans, and two granddaughters, Sheila and ZoAnne Parker.

FREDERICKSBURG -- Lloyd H. Peters, 87, of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 at Sunrise Guest Home in Fredericksburg after a brief illness. On Feb. 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lois Clapp at Austin, Minn. William served in the United States Army during World War II. William and Lois are long time residents of Charles City but did live a number of years in California. During his working career William was employed at the Oliver Corporation, but spent most of his time working as an auto mechanic, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Rockford United Methodist Church, V.F.W., Trailblazers, which was the unit that he served with in the Rhineland Campaign, and a former member of the I.A.M. Local 1596. Talking about cars, woodworking, gardening, and doing yardwork were some of William's favorite pastimes.

Living family members include his wife, Lois of Charles City, four sons, Danny (Colleen) Cross of Grand Terrace, Calif.; Jerry (Dawn) Cross of Shasta Lake, Calif., Craig Cross of Cotati, Calif., and Robert (Mae) Cross of Charles City; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; a sister, Marcella (Harold) Carlson of Rockford; and two brothers, Roland Cross of Charles City, and Larry (Sharon) Cross of Nora Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Paul Cross, and a grandson, John Cross.
