Maxine Maland
Maxine Maland, a long-time resident of Charles
City, died Tuesday morning, January 3, 2005, at
the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles
City at 90 years of age.
Funeral services for Maxine Maland will be held
at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. John
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. The

will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside
Cemetery in Charles City.Friends may call at the
Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-8
p.m. Friday and Saturday morning at the church
an hour prior to the service.
Maxine Gladys Wicks, the daughter of Cryder and
Nettie (Erickson) Wicks of Kanawha, was born
Sept. 26, 1915. The Wicks family of six children
grew up in this predominately Norwegian
immigrant farm country in north central Iowa
where the St. John’s Lutheran Church served as a
center of their family and community lives.
Graduating from Kanawha High School in 1933,
Maxine was a forward on the girl’s basketball
team, acted in school plays, sang in school
musicals, co-directed the local 4-H club, taught
Sunday School and acted as pianist for St.
John’s Lutheran Church of Kanawha from
1933-1940. She received her Teacher’s
Certificate from what is now the University of
Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls and taught in the
one-room country school house near her home. On
June 23, 1940, Maxine Wicks married former
Kanawha resident and recent graduate of the Iowa
State University Veterinary College, Dr. Paul
Maland. Paul and Maxine settled in Charles City,
raised five children - known as “the 5 Js” - and
celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last
June 23, 2005.
It is a challenging task to honor the whole
fabric of another’s life with adequate words -
so picture Maxine Maland’s nine decades of
living as a richly colored quilt of daily
engaged life, woven together with strong
dominant threads of love, kindness, compassion,
a deep faith in God, service to community, and
an ever-present ear listening to others with
heart and mind. Day by day, Maxine cared for
“the 5 Js,” answered the phone and scheduled
“Doc’s” veterinary calls, was active in St. John
Lutheran Church on numerous committees, was a
choir mother, Sunday School and Bible School
teacher and a member of WELCA. She was an active
parent in PTA, Boy and Girl Scouts and other
school committees. Maxine also enjoyed her
volunteer work with the Ladies Hospital
Auxiliary, Virginia Tietz’s second-grade class
at Jefferson School as a reading assistant, and
her relationships in PEO, Women’s Club, and
weekly get-togethers with women friends at their
McDonald’s coffee group.
In addition to all of these community
connections and devotion to her family, and her
10 great grandchildren, two of the most
meaningful threads to Maxine’s life were her
work as a Hospice Volunteer, where she and Paul
were recognized as Hospice Volunteers of the
Year in 1993, and her role as mentor and friend
to a young mother’s group here in Floyd County,
being nominated for “State of Iowa Mother” in
1974. The friendship, fun and love among this
group of women and their families, has nurtured
and sustained Maxine for always and forever.
Maxine was also known to be an excellent cook
who delighted many over the years with her
Norwegian kringla and raspa kumla, apple pie and
potato salad.
In later years, Maxine truly enjoyed each
grandchild and great grandchild and felt blessed
to be an important part of their lives. After
attending countless concerts and sporting events
of their own children, she and Paul continued to
enjoy those of the grands and great-grands.
Maxine Maland is survived by her husband, Paul,
of Charles City; daughters: Judy and her
husband, Kip Hauser, and their children, Laurie,
Rebecca, and Stephen; Janet, and her husband,
Roger Hanson of Fenton, Mo., and their children,
Kristen and Kurt; Jeanine Maland, of Asheville,
N.C., and her daughter, Molly Maland; sons, Jim
Maland and K.D. Maynard of Brattleboro, Vt., and
their children, Emily and Tyler; and Jerry
Maland and his wife, Jane, of Harrison, Ark.,
and their children, Justin, Jenny, Jeff and
Jessica. And so dear to Maxine are her 12
grandchildren, their spouses and their
delightful families, 10 great-grands in all! In
addition are Maxine’s loving sisters, LaVonne
Nosbusch of Los Angeles, Calif., and Carole
Basler of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and
sister-in-law, Imogene Wicks of Belmond.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Orville,
Everett and Raymond Wicks, along with her
nephew, Randy Wicks. We recognize, as well,
countless other family members, nieces and
nephews and beloved friends of the Charles City
community.
The family suggests giving memorials to Hospice
of North Iowa Charles City site, St. John
Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice. The
entire family has been touched by the countless
acts of kindness to Maxine and Paul during her
illness.

Lewis Howard Ingersoll was born October 31,
1912, on the family farm, rural Floyd, to Robert
Maurice and Effie (Childs) Ingersoll. He was the
fourth child of six born to his parents and
received his education in Floyd. During Lewis’
younger years, he would travel to the
Minneapolis area to assist his uncles with
various projects.
"Lewie," as he was lovingly known by his family
and friends, met his future wife, Vera Arlene
Immel through mutual friends. The couple was
united in marriage on February 25, 1940, in
Mitchell and moved to a small farm near Floyd.
They became the proud parents of a son Bob and a
daughter Barb.
Lewie and Vera were involved with their
children’s activities and enjoyed family weekend
camping trips and later, a small cabin in
Lansing. Lewie treasured time spent outdoors. He
favored hunting and fishing, especially trout,

winter months. Upon reaching their destination,
the "snowbirds" busied themselves planning
activities and assisting with the overall
maintenance of the retirement village. By the
mid 80s, they no longer traveled south due to
declining health.
Lewis is described as a kind, good and giving
man who was always concerned of the well-being
of those around him. He was tender and emotional
and had a great zest for life. Lewis was
grateful for each new day and loved the close
contact he had maintained with his family. He
was a faithful member to his church and most
area residents will remember Lewis socializing
at the Senior Citizen’s Center or the local and
neighboring food establishments. Lewie shared a

Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Charles City. Pastor David Werges will

Ruby Pearl Studer Mullen was born January 7th,
1917, at Algona, to German/Irish parents Frank
and Katie (Cannon) Studer. She received her
education in Rockwell. On September 19, 1955,
she was united in marriage to Andrew J. Mullen.
They later divorced. Rubie’s childhood was cut
short when her father suffered a critical heart
condition when she was 11 or 12 years old that
left him unable to operate the farm by himself.
With her mother and younger brother, she started
working in the fields using horses to plant and
harvest corn, oats and beans, plow fields and
cut hay. She would cut and shock oats by hand
loading them onto flat bed wagons and then drive
a team of horses up to a thrashing machine where
she would pitch the bundles into the thrasher.
She could hold her own with any of the men.
All through her life, she would start work at
daybreak and rest only after the sun had set and
the last chores were done. She lived through the
Great Depression and, during the later part of
World War II, worked the night shift in the
Oliver Foundry at Charles City.
Through hard and difficult times, her spirit
never broke. In July, 1963 she was permanently
injured in a major car accident caused by a
drunk driver. She has fought through the pain
and suffering from that fateful day and never
complained.
Ruby treasured spending time with her family and
friends and found great joy in seeing and
visiting with her grandchildren and always found
time to acknowledge birthdays and holidays. She
was an excellent cook, homemaker and gardener
who appreciated nature and never tired of
watching the birds and animals. After the
accident, her interests included watching
television, reading and looking at pictures of
different places and people around the world.
Living family members include four sons and
their wives, Richard and Mary Jo Mullen of
Minneapolis, Dennis and Marilyn Mullen of
Rockford, Larry and Loraine Mullen of Charles
City and Russell and Peggy Mullen of Charles
City; a daughter, Donna Mullen of Algona; 14
grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a
soon arriving great-great-grandchild.

grandsons, Jerry Lee Stufflebeam and Michael Lee
Mullen; an infant granddaughter, Toni Lee

of sympathy may direct them to the Ida R.
Roberts Memorial Fund in the care of her
daughter Jane M. Mosher, P.O. Box 217 Riceville,
IA 50466-0217.
Thoughts, condolences and stories may be
e-mailed to the family on the
www.fullertonfh.com Web site.
Ida Rose Roberts was born April 17, 1913, in
Rockford to Jennie (Patterson) and Robert
Tumilson, Sr. She was the fifth of six children
born to her parents and attended school and
resided her entire life in the Rockford area,
with the exception of the past two years, when
she moved to the care facility in Riceville to
be near her daughter and son-in-law.
Ida was united in marriage to Gilbert Harry
Roberts on December 24, 1932, at the First
United Methodist Church in Charles City. They
became the proud parents of three children,
Frank Delano Roberts, Jane Marie (Roberts)
Mosher and Robert Eugene Roberts.
Ida was a kind and loving mother, grandmother,
aunt, sister and friend to all who shared in her
life. Ida’s baking skills — especially her
homemade cinnamon rolls, pies and bread — were
among the best and she often shared her goods
with family and friends. Ida’s children often
teased their mother that, due to her generous
nature, they needed to be near when the goods
were ready to eat or she would give them all
away before they had the opportunity to indulge.
On a daily basis, Ida and her sister, Minnie
Graham, joined with a group of friends known as
the "Coffee Gang" at Captain Bly’s in Rockford.
They treasured this gathering time and cherished
the wonderful memories.
Those who best knew Ida recall that she was
extremely proud of her Irish heritage and
spending time with her family. According to her
thoughts on Irish tradition, meals weren’t meals
without potatoes! Those who knew her also
remember well her delicious fried chicken and
gravy, her very early morning breakfasts and
dining on her special recipe of sugar goulash.
In Ida’s earlier years, she was employed as a
cook at the Starr Home and Ray’s Pizza, both in
Charles City, which were perfect jobs for her
given her ability to transform food into
delicious meals!
Ida was a woman with quick wit and great sense
of humor. She was strong in both body and mind,
devoted to her faith, very independent, enjoyed
dancing in her later life, was a staunch
democrat, was never fearful to state her
opinions and was a very giving person. Ida found
comfort and joy in music. She loved to sing and
have others sing with her, especially older and
more traditional songs. She constantly amazed
all who were around her with the ability to
recite poems — even difficult and lengthy poems
— and the Gettysburg Address, which she recited
in its entirety since an early age!
Ida will be dearly missed by all who shared in
her long and full life.
She is survived by her children, Frank (Gwen)
Roberts, of Fresno, Calif., Jane (Harvey)
Mosher, of Riceville, and Bob (Elaine) Roberts,
of Sherwood, N.D.; sister Minnie Graham, of
Rockford; six grandchildren, Gilbert (Susan)
Roberts, Lance Roberts, Kerry (Sharon) Mosher,
Kyle (Kathy) Mosher, Alan (Shannon) Roberts and
Angie (Mike Mayer) Roberts. She will also be
cherished by her 12 great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren and numerous other
relatives and friends.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert
Roberts in March of 1966; parents Jennie and
Robert Tumilson, Sr.; three brothers, Samuel,
Robert, Jr. and Thomas Tumilson; and her sister
Annabelle Joesting.
The family wishes to thank the staff and
caregivers of the Riceville Community Rest Home
for the kindness, love and care given to Ida.
We love you Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt and
Friend! God bless you and keep you in His loving
arms where you join Dad and all your family and
friends as angels in heaven to watch over us
until we meet again!
