Henry Hinrichsen 

Former C.C. councilman Henry Hinrichsen dies

Word has come that a former Charles City council member has passed away.

Henry Hinrichsen, age 76, died March 12 at his home in Lake Summerset, Ill., following a battle with cancer. Funeral services were held March 15 in Durand, Ill.

Hinrichsen, who was born in Hamburg, Germany, served on the Charles City City Council from 1964 until 1968.

He worked as a bacteriologist, and later as personnel director, at Salsbury Laboratories for 16 years. He was also president of the Charles City Kiwanis Club for a year, and served as lieutenant governor and distinguished member of the club in Iowa.

His wife, Marilyn, still resides in Lake Summerset.

Hulda Niemann

Hulda Niemann, 94, of 9th Street Chautauqua and formerly of 704 Freeman St., Charles City, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the nursing home, following a brief illness.

Arrangements are pending at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home in Charles City.

Elden Pyle Elden Pyle, 82, a resident of 1906 Owen St., Charles City, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services for Elden Pyle will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 12, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Dianne Christopher, senior pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. The Charles City Ceremonial Unit will conduct military honors.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 3 to 9 p.m. today Wednesday where the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday.


Adeline Jackson

SUN CITY, Ariz. - Adeline M. (Mrs. Glenn) Jackson, 97, of Sun City, Ariz., and formerly of Marshall, Minn., Charles City and Chicago, Ill., died March 29, 2001, at the Cook Health Care Center in Sun City of natural causes.

A memorial funeral service will be held on April 20, 2001, at Lakeview United Methodist Church in Sun City, Ariz. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. The Sunland Mortuary, Sun City, Ariz., is in charge of the arrangements.


Irene Derr 

NEW HAMPTON - Irene Mary Derr, 70, of New Hampton and formerly of Nashua, died Sunday morning, April 8, 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, at the Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home in Nashua. Burial will be in St. Matthew's Cemetery in Readlyn.

Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home in Nashua is in charge of the arrangements.


Gladys Vokaty 

Gladys Alberta McFarland Bird Vokaty, 85, of 95 N. Cedar Terrace, Charles City, died Monday, April 9, 2001 at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2001, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home with the Rev. Stanley Hayek officiating. A luncheon will follow at the VFW. Burial will be held in Little Cedar Cemetery, Little Cedar, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m. Sister Jennifer Rausch will be leading a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Friday.


Ruth Poppe

TRIPOLI - Ruth Poppe, 90, of Nashua, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Tripoli Nursing Home.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, also in Nashua.

Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home of Nashua/Fredericksburg is in charge of arrangements.


Frances Chambers 

Frances (Mrs. James Sr.) Chambers, 83, a resident of 3206 4th St., Colwell, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, at the United Church of Christ at Colwell. Pastor Gale Richards will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 3 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, where the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the services.

Leslie Benjegerdes 

MANLY - Leslie Emil (Les) Benjegerdes, 86, of 408 W. Bosworth St., Manly, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Manly Care Center, Manly.

Services will be Saturday 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, with Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Interment will be in the Manly Cemetery, Manly.

Visitation will be today, Friday, April 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly, and one hour before the service on Saturday at the Church.

Les was born Jan. 15, 1915 in Lincoln Twp. Rural Manly, Iowa the son of Carl and Eliza (Dobel) Benjegerdes. He graduated from Manly High School in 1932. He married Catherine (Marie) Heagel on May 5, 1937. They farmed in the Manly area. She preceded him in death on June 25, 1975. On July 25, 1981 he married Eleanor Crawford at the Free Methodist Church, Riceville. They moved to Riceville, then to Charles City and in 1990 moved to Manly to live.

Les enjoyed reading, fishing and going on trips and playing cards. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, Iowa; Kiwanis in Riceville and the Homebuilders at Bethel United Methodist Church.

Les is survived by his wife Eleanor Benjegerdes, Manly; a daughter Sandra Miles and her husband Pete, Fargo, N.D.; two sons: Leon Benjegerdes and his wife Betty of Manly, and Denis Benjegerdes and his wife Candy of Manly; a stepdaughter Lynn Pattee and her husband Bob, Humbolt; a stepson Steve Crawford and his wife Joyce, Charles City; seven grandchildren: Maria McConnell, Sabra Low, Karla Haley, Troy Benjegerdes, Cheri Benjegerdes, Joy Garnass and Dan Benjegerdes; four stepgrandchildren: Angie Stockdale, Andy Pattee, Aaron Crawford and Emily Crawford; three great-grandchildren: Ian Low, Nicholas Butze and Dante Benjegerdes; three stepgreat-grandchildren: Andy Haley, Jacob Stockdale and Lucas Stockdale; one sister Irene Gorkowski, Toledo, Ohio; a sister-in-law Florence Benjegerdes, Mason City; and one brother-in-law Alex Heagel and his wife Evelyn, Kensett.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marie; sisters Gertrude Northway Tarr and Lizzie Dickinson; and one brother Walter Benjegerdes.

The family suggests memorials to Leslie E. Benjegerdes memorial fund.


Mary Renelda 

Mary Renelda, Mrs. Ed Kratchmer, 87, a former resident of 608 9th Avenue, Charles City, and a former resident of Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home for the past five years, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services for Mary Renelda Kratchmer will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. The Rev. Diane Mitchell, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3-9 p.m. Sunday where the family will greet friends from 3-5 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday morning at the church an hour prior to the service.

Mary Renelda Atkinson Kratchmer was born May 12, 1913, at Clarksville, the daughter of George and Stella (Hickle) Atkinson. As a child her family moved to Washington Springs, S.D., where they lived until her father's death, at which time they returned to Clarksville. When Mary's mother died, George and Grace Haney of Clarksville raised her as a child. Mary graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1931. On July 9, 1934, she was united in marriage to Ed Kratchmer at Lena, Illinois. Mary and Ed were active members of the Central Methodist Church which, after the 1968 tornado, merged with the First Methodist Church to become Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Rebecca Lodge. Mary enjoyed her flower garden, fishing, spending time with her family and friends, and was known for her quick wit and sense of humor.

Living family members include her husband Ed of Charles City; three sons and their wives, Vernon and Sally of Osage, Perry and Kerry of Harrah, Okla. and Dean and Sharon of Pensacola, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Her parents, daughter Elaine Hirschler and a sister, Lucille Walker, preceded her in death.

The family suggests memorials be directed to Heart to Home Hospice, Charles Ciity site.

NASHUA - Mattie Junker, 87, of Nashua, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at the Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Falls.

Funeral services are pending at Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home of Nashua.

NASHUA - Mattie Junker, 87, of Nashua, passed away Thursday afternoon, April 19, 2001, at the Windsor Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Cedar Falls of natural causes.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, at the Plainfield Baptist Church in Plainfield, with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Pastor Fred Austin will be officiating the service.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be directed to the family.


Elmer M. Bramer 

GREENE - Elmer M. "Bud" Bramer, 85, formerly of 601 North First St., Greene, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 23, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, also in Greene.

Reid's Funeral Chapel of Greene is handling arrangements.


Melburn Smalley 

OSAGE - Melburn E. Smalley, 95, of Osage, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, at St. Peter's Catholic church in New Haven. Interment will be St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, also in New Haven.

Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home of Osage is handling arrangements.


Clarence Schmidt 

Clarence W. Schmidt, 77, 1708 Owen Street, Charles City, Iowa, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

A funeral service for Clarence Schmidt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert Streets, Charles City. Pastors Mark A. Anderson and Dennis D. Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City, with graveside military honors conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, April 23, at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. The family will be present to greet friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Tuesday.

NASHUA - Evelyn Potratz, 73, of Nashua, passed away Friday afternoon, April 20, 2001, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, at St. John Lutheran Church, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Nashua.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Jerry Jepperson 

Jerry Jepperson, 40, of Charles City, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 26, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. The Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton is in charge of the arrangements


David Hayes

OMAHA, Neb. - David Hayes, 39, of Omaha, Neb., died April 9, 2001, after a 10-month battle with leukemia.

A memorial service was held on April 14 at West Hills Presbyterian Church in Omaha.

Living family members include his wife, Dina, two children: Jake and Lauren, his parents: Cliff and Meredith (Suhr) Hayes, all of Omaha, Neb.; and one sister, Rebecca Hayes of Boulder, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Pauline and Russell Suhr, longtime residents of Charles City.

Gary Jacobs 

Gary L. Jacobs, 53, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, in the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 25, at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Burial was in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville.

Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville was in charge of the arrangements.
