Milton C. Obermeier

Milton C. Obermeier, 92 of 509 First Ave., Charles City, died Thursday Dec. 29, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center.
 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at First Congregational Church, Charles City. Officiating will be Dr. Forrest Cornelius. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.
 

Milton was born on March 24, 1919, the son of Charles and Elda (Polzin) Obermeier. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1938 and attended Upper Iowa University where he played football until he entered the service in early 1942. During WWII he served as a gunnery instructor of the Army Air Force until his discharge in 1945. He married Orpha Zidlicky on Feb. 4, 1944, in Lime Springs. Following his time in the service he worked at Oliver White as a Supervisor until retiring in 1981 after 35 years of service. He was active in his community, a member of the First Congregational Church, Oliver Athletic Board, and past-president of the Cedar Valley Ducks Unlimited Chapter.
 

Milton’s passion for faith, family, friends and the great outdoors was evident throughout his 92 years. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, loved sports, playing cards and bowling which is what he was doing the day before his admission to the Hospital. He will always be remembered for his keen sense of humor to the end of life. Milton is survived by two sons, John and William (Kathy) Obermeier; a sister, Colleen Darby; four grandchildren: Jerilyn Obermeier, Bobby Obermeier, Amy Kay and Michael Obermeier; and three greatgrandchildren: Tyler Obermeier, Jerrod Ouzts, Katharinia Obermeier and his special friend and bowling partner, Helen Stonecypher.
 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Orpha in 2002; and brother Wendell in 2003.

Melvin Johnson Yerkes

GREENE — Memorial services for Melvin Johnson Yerkes, 82, of Greene, will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at St. Peter Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by Tack-Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Private burial to be held at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene and will continue at the church on Thursday, one hour before services.
 

Melvin Johnson Yerkes was born on Dec. 1, 1929, in Benton County, a son of John and Geraldine (Johnson) Yerkes and passed away from complications of heart surgery on Jan. 1 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Delores ‘Toodie’ Jane Arhart

MASON CITY — Delores “Toodie” Jane Arhart, 77, died Thursday Dec. 29, 2011, at the Good Shepherd in Mason City.
 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Mason City.

Pastor Keith Scott will be officiating the service.
 

Following the service, there will be a luncheon held at the church. The interment will be at the West Side cemetery in Marble Rock following the luncheon. A visitation will take place Tuesday, Jan. 3, from 4-8 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City. Visitation will also be one hour prior to service on Wednesday. Those wishing to express their sympathy through a memorial can be made to Wesley United Methodist Church in Delores’s name or may direct them in care of the family by sending to Robert Arhart 625 Golf View Drive, Garner, IA 50438. The family will distribute the memorial funds to charities that benefited Delores Delores “Toodie” Arhart was born in Bristow on March 21, 1934, to Henry and Velma (Bohnoff) Krull. She was one of six children; Edward, Marjorie, Harry, Lyle and Sam. She spent the first years of her educational life going to country schools and later attended and graduated from Marble Rock High School.
 

In 1956 Delores married the love of her life, Robert Arhart, and this union was blessed with four children Randy, Janine, Kim, and Rick. Aside from caring for her family as a full time homemaker, she spent her time cooking, working at various places including Younker’s, Penney’s and Cub Foods. She also worked many years at the Tom Thumb Deli in the Twin Cities. There she acquired the nick name of Julia Child for her delectable dishes. She was promoted to their main down town store until the couple returned to Garner, where she resided for her retirement. Delores had a passion for gardening. She had many plants and flowers with all kinds of foliage, she truly had a green thumb. She enjoyed decorating their retirement home, along with collecting hand crafted birds, china tea sets and porcelain dolls. Delores was extremely shy in her younger years, but as the years went by, she blossomed, just like her many gardens, into a social loving person, who foremost loved her husband Robert, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren along with countless friends. Delores loved to be around her family and couldn’t wait to host their next gathering.
 

Delores’ love and memories will live on in the hearts of her husband, Robert Arhart of Garner; children: son, Randy (Jane) Arhart, of Austin, Minn. and their children Ryan (Kelsey), Lindsay and Ashley; daughter, Janine (Brian) Hammarstedt, of Mason City, and their children Michele (Dan) Wertz and their baby due in February; Matt Hammarstedt and Amanda (Nick) Steege, and their children Noah and Tayden; daughter, Kim (Kevin) Smith, of Belmond, and their sons Kody and Kyle; son, Rick (Tammy) Arhart, of Rochester, Minn., and their daughters Abigail and Alexandria. Delores is also survived by her beloved brother, Lyle Krull and sister, Sam (Earl) Usher, along with various other beloved relatives.
 

Delores is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Velma Krull, brothers Edward and Harry and sister Marjorie.

Duane Tracy

Duane Tracy, 85, of Nashua died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.
 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with Pastor Okitakoyi Lundula officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua.
 

Friends may greet the family from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the funeral at the church on Saturday. Online condolences for Duane's family may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com Duane Eldon Tracy was born Aug. 18, 1926, on the family farm south of Nashua, the son of Frank and Margaret (Jones) Tracy. He was a graduate of the Nashua High School in 1944 and briefly attended Iowa State University.
 

Duane was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Hoon on Dec. 26, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua. The couple had two sons and four daughters. Duane worked for a short period of time on his father’s farm then became a salesman for the cutting edge Surge Milking Equipment business in the 1950s. He became a dairy farmer on a farm west of Nashua until he sold the farm in 1973 at which time he used his carpenter skills to build houses. In December, 1975 he purchased a limestone/rock quarry which he ran for 15 years. Throughout this time he continued to farm on both purchased and rented farm land until he completely retired in 1997.
 

Duane was an active volunteer in the community including membership on committees for the Nashua United Methodist Church, 4-H leader, President of the Big Four Fair Board for 11 years and President of the Chickasaw County Historical Society. Duane especially enjoyed time spent with family; traveling to Florida every winter as well as trips to Alaska, the Caribbean, the Canadian Rockies, and the Gulf Coast; and playing 500 with the Card Club.
 

Duane is survived by two sons, Kevin Tracy, of Maple Grove, Minn., and Neal Tracy, of Ankeny; four daughters: Elizabeth (John) Schacht, of Iowa City, Dawn Blum, of West Des Moines, Christine (Dan) Schmidt, of Lenexa, Kan., and Mary Frances Tracy, of Eagan, Minn.; six grandchildren: Emily (John) Campbell, Angela (Matt) Farrell, Andy (Michelle) Blum, Amy (Todd) White, Garrett Schmidt and Rebecca Schmidt; two great-grandchildren, Cole Campbell and Mackenzie Blum; and two brothers, Merton Tracy, of Nashua, and Leon (Ellen) Tracy, of Tucson, Ariz.
 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary; two sisters, Kathryn Richardson and Mary Annee Stanley; and son-in-law, Dave Blum.

Effie Miller

Effie Miller, 95, of Charles City, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
 

Funeral services for Effie Miller will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.
 

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.
 

Effie Marie Mehmen Bonsall Miller was born June 19, 1916, in Butler County, the daughter of Harm and Hannah (Cordes) Mehmen. She received her education from rural Floyd County schools. On May 16, 1934, she was united in marriage to Keith Bonsall. Keith died on Aug. 17, 1971. Effie married Gerald Miller on March 17, 1973. Gerald died on March 9, 2000. For seven years Effie worked at the Belmond Radio Plant and then for 20 years at Salsbury Laboratories. She was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Women of the Moose and VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Effie’s greatest pastime was calling family and friends on the telephone. She always looked forward to sharing life’s experiences with her family.
 

Living family members include three children, Donna (Ed) Stalker, of Albert Lea, Minn., Duane (Beverly) Bonsall, of Milan, Ill., and Barbara Goodsell, of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.


She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a brother, Herman Mehmen; and a sister, Ann Lampson.

Robert J. Lux

Robert J. Lux, 84, of 317 Third Ave., died Jan. 5, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center Charles City.
 

A private family service will be held Jan. 10, with Father Carl Ries officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.
 

Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.
 

Robert was born on July 22, 1927 in Breckenridge, Minn., to Kenneth and Rose (Jolly) Lux. He attended the University of Northern Iowa. Upon graduation he began his 33-year teaching career teaching English in the communities of Charles City, Garrison, Pleasant Valley and Bettendorf. He served as principal of Charles City High School for 15 years before retiring in 1983. Robert’s passion for life included reading, shopping, and music. He enjoyed public speaking and was a noted commencement speaker. He was a collector who collected many things such as duck decoys, music and books. His favorite music was that of Duke Ellington. Robert was an avid sports fan too and loved cheering and following the Chicago Cubs and Bears.
 

Robert is survived by his two sons, Robert and William Lux; sister Beverly (Harold) Platts; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents his wife Joyce (Rink) in 1981 and wife Mary (Price) in 1987.

 Larry Dean Brown
 

CEDAR PARK, Texas — Larry Dean Brown, 67, of Cedar Park, Texas, passed away on Jan. 5, 2012. He was born on June 23, 1944, in Charles City.

Larry graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wayne State College, Wayne, Neb.; master’s degree in Russian history from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.; and completed a minor in economics from Colorado University, Boulder, Colo.
 

Larry taught school in the Council Bluffs Community School District for 34 years and was employed at Barnes and Noble Book Store in Round Rock for 10 years.
 

Larry and his wife Sandra raised their family in Omaha, Neb., where they resided for 30 years.


He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Wesley Brown. Larry is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandra Brown; daughters, Suzanne Marie Brown Garza and husband Gabriel, of Leander, Texas; and Stephanie Ann Brown Sanchez, of Florence, Texas; grandson, Hunter Nathaniel Garza; mother, Arla Mae Hirsch, of Charles City; brother, Scott Carl Brown and wife Rhonda of Elk Mound, Wis.; and nieces, Nikki Hoeppner and husband Darren and Kelly Carrier and husband Kevin.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. with the Rosary at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9 at Beck Funeral Home, Cedar Park, Texas. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Cedar Park, Texas. Interment will immediately follow in Bagdad Cemetery, Leander, Texas.

Diane Stowe
 

Diane Stowe, 77, of Charles City, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.


Memorial services will be held at a later date.


Diane LaVerne Stowe was born June 4, 1934, at Red Wing, Minn., the daughter of Vernon and Marion (Henn) Vanberg. She graduated from Worthington High School in Worthington, Minn. On March 15, 1953, she was united in marriage to Rex Stowe, Jr. at Worthington. They moved to Charles City in 1956 where they owned and operated Van’s Hardware for 40 years. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
 

Living family members include two children, Bret Stowe and Keri (Eugene) Anderegg, both of Charles City; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a great grandson.

Norvin Clarence Qualey

SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Norvin Clarence Qualey, 75, of Decorah, Iowa, and formerly of Spring Grove, passed away following a courageous battle with cancer Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at Winneshiek Memorial Hospital in Decorah, surrounded by his loving family.
 

Norvin is the father of Kim (Karl) Knoke, of Charles City, Iowa.
 

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Burial will be at Trinity Church Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
 

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be given to the Wilmington Lutheran Church.

Leona Tenney

ST. JAMES, Minn. — Leona Tenney, 93, of St. James, Minn., died on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James.
 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 2 at St. James Catholic Church in St. James. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in St. James.
 

Leona Marie Grabinger was born on March 26, 1918, to Christ and Frances (Augustin) Grabinger in Leavenworth. She grew up on the family farm and attended rural Country School District 42.


On April 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Walter Tenney at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple made their home near Comfrey until moving to St. James. She ran a upholstery business out of the family home for 25 years.
 

Leona enjoyed bowling, cooking, baking, playing cards and quilting. She loved spending time and visiting with family and friends especially her grandkids. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters and Christian Mothers.
 

Survivors include her children: Linda and Richard Flohrs, of Ormsby, and Steve and Cyndy Tenney, of Charles City, Iowa; grandchildren: Jay Wendt, Nikole and Derek Marth and their children Elsie, Abram, Izzie and Ephraim, Amanda and James Lopez and Reeve, Amber and Joshua Haseley and Isabella, Michael Flohrs, Natalie and Wayne Woolley and their children Norah and Emma, Lisa and John Koll and Ryan, Mark and Michelle Tenney and their children Tyler, Cooper, Kiya, Ashley and Jesse Stratton and family, Jessica Kalbakdalen and Ryan Stotts and family; and many nieces and nephews.


Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; son Don; parents; sisters; and a brother.

Norita Clark

Norita Clark, 84, of Charles City, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.


Norita Anna Clark was born May 14, 1927, on the family farm near Ionia, the daughter of Leo and Mary (Brown) Testroet. She attended St. Boniface Catholic School along with her eight brothers and sisters. On Oct. 24, 1949, she was united in marriage to Robert W. Clark at Galena, Ill. The couple made their home in Cedar Rapids where Norita worked at Wilson and Co. Meat Packing Plant. She retired after 28 years and moved to Charles City. Norita started her second career working in Home Health Care and as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She enjoyed the outdoors, flower gardening and spending time with her family.
 

Living family members include four children: Jim (Yvonne) Bottema, of La Porte City, Relia LaGrou, of Charles City, Brian Clark, of Mason City, and Jackie (John Ingle) Dunlap, of Marble Rock; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tom Testroet, of Chicago, Ill., Vince Testroet, of Milwaukee, Wis.; a sister, Janice (Jack) Smith, of Ankeny; and many nieces and nephews.
 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert in 1974; three brothers, Leon, Hubert, and James Testroet; and two sisters, Mary Eikenberry and Lois Roes.

Miles D. Freitag

Miles Freitag died at home in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 2, 2012, at the age of 72 after a 25-year battle with prostate cancer. He passed peacefully and was surrounded by love.
 

Miles was born on March 11, 1939, in Glasgow, Mont. He spent his youth in Bowman, N.D., and graduated from high school there in 1956. Miles graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1961. He also received a Bachelor of Foreign Relations from the American Graduate School of International Management in 1962.
 

Miles married Cheryl Larson on June 17, 1962, in Bisbee, N.D. They made their first home in Chicago, Ill. They moved to Charles City in 1965 where they raised two children, Mark and Michelle. Miles began working in the animal health industry in Charles City with Salsbury Laboratories and established the international sales group within the company. He traveled extensively and established new relationships and businesses throughout the world. His career flourished and he became president of the company, then known as Solvay Animal Health, in 1984. Miles joined the board of directors of First Citizens National Bank and served for nearly 30 years until his death.
 

In 1989, Miles relocated the corporate headquarters to Minneapolis, Minn., and Miles and Cheryl moved to Apple Valley, Minn. Miles remained president of the company until his retirement in 1997. Miles and Cheryl moved to SaddleBrooke in Tucson, Ariz., in 1999, where they built a home with a view of the Catalina Mountains. In his retirement, he enjoyed travel, family, tennis, reading and the birds of the desert.
 

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, and he is survivedby his wife, two children and two grandchildren.




Brenda Sue Williams

Brenda Sue Williams, 50, of 1058 E. Gail Drive, Gilbert, Ariz., passed away on Dec. 26, 2011.
 

Brenda was born in Charles City on Oct. 19, 1961. She graduated from Rockford High School in 1980, North Iowa Area Community College in 1984, and Southwest Texas University in 1999. Brenda was a registered nurse for 27 years who provided civilian nursing service to the military, taught nursing and was a hospice nurse.
 

Brenda was a beloved wife, mother and friend to all. She touched and comforted countless souls destine for the spiritual journey before her. We will miss you dearly Brenda; your mission is in Heaven now. Brenda is survived by her husband, John Williams, and son, Nikolas Williams, of Gilbert, Ariz.; and cousins Charyl Peters, Judy Piece and Terry Meyer, of Iowa. Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Viola Meyer.
 

A public service is not scheduled; inurnment will be with the immediate family.

Luella M. Glaser

NEW HAMPTON — Luella M. Glaser, 84, of New Hampton, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at the New Hampton Care Center in New Hampton on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012.
 

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph’s Center in New Hampton with Father Mark Osterhaus celebrating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton with Jon Glaser, Tracy Demro, Kevin Glaser, Scott Glaser, Andy Glaser and Jacob Glaser serving as casket bearers and honorary casket bearers will be Luella’s grandchildren.
 

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton, with a rosary at 3:30 p.m. and scriptural wake service at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the funeral mass on Friday. Luella Marie Glaser was born on July 9, 1927, to Francis and Lornetta (Kalkbrenner) Rings in New Hampton. She attended St. Mary’s School in North Washington for 11 years and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1945. Luella was united in marriage to Harold Glaser on Oct. 28, 1947, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. The couple farmed west of New Hampton until 1977 when they retired to New Hampton.
 

Luella loved her children and grandchildren making many sacrifices to assure that they were well taken care of, always putting others first. She loved gardening and her flower gardens. Luella was a member of St. Joseph’s Center — Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph’s Rosary Society, New Hampton Garden Club and was bookkeeper for Harold’s Nachurs Fertilizer.

MARION — Marion Irene Zierath, 84, of Marion, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. A gathering of friends and family will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Marion, with a blessing at 2 p.m.
 

Survivors include four children: Marcia Leu, of Fonda, Greg (Karen) Zierath, of Marion, Lori (Brett) Nelson, of Bloomington, Ind., and Larry Zierath, of Ames; a sister, Arlette Gauger; three brothers: Alvin (Shirley) Davidson, Allen (Sharon) Davidson and Lyle (Vera) Davidson; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
 

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a sister, Geneva Schlick; and three brothers, Glen, Oscar and Irving Davidson.
 

Marion was born June 26, 1927, in Blue Earth, Minn., the daughter of Alfred and Nora (Skogen) Davidson. On July 14, 1946, she was united in marriage to Raymond C. Zierath in Nashua. Marion retired from Sears and Roebuck after 20 years of service in human resources. Marion was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

Kathryn M. Richard, 87, of Dubuque and formerly of Greene, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at Seventh Heaven.
 

Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 23, at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont. Burial will be at the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont.
 

Kathryn was born on Feb. 7, 1924, in Dumont, the daughter of Jans and Hilka (Miller) Folkerds. She enjoyed working as a nanny for many years. While attending a baseball game, she met Merlyn Richard and on June 23, 1944, the two were married at Ft. Jackson, S.C. Merlyn preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1998. Kathryn moved to Dubuque in 2007 to be near her daughter, Marilyn. She attended St. John’s U.C.C. in rural Nashua, and Hope Church in Dubuque and enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, hospitality, and crocheting. Telling stories and playing cards with family and friends. Five Hundred, Pinochle, and Skipbo were her favorite pastimes.
 

Surviving is her daughter Marilyn Richard, of Dubuque, and her sister, Jeanette Hayner, of Dumont.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters Etta Reysack and Tillean McGrean; and three brothers John, Claus and Lavern Folkerds.


A Kathryn Richard memorial fund has been established.

OSAGE — Jennie Marie (Onken) Adams, 83, of Osage, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at the hospice room at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage where she was surrounded by her kids.


 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 23, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Father Jack McClure, CPPS, officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Catholic Cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 4:30-7 p.m. on Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a scripture wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Monday.
 

Jennie was born Oct. 18, 1928, in Orchard, the daughter of Enno and Jennie (Rademacher) Onken. She attended school in Orchard. Jennie married Raymond Adams at Visitation Church in Stacyville on May 11, 1948. They made their home in Stacyville and then moved to California for 15 years before returning to Iowa. Jennie was enjoying her retirement after more than 17 years cooking at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage. She loved to sew, cook, do jigsaw puzzles and gamble at casinos. She was also known for baking cakes for weddings, birthdays and other celebrations. Jennie was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries as well as Sacred Heart Guild.
 

She will be greatly missed by her kids, Pat (John) Fisher, of Dale City, Va., Mar Adams, of Osage, Colleen Upton, of Santa Ana, Calif., Sue (Don) Weber, of Stacyville, Liz (Rick) Stevens, of Osage and Mike Adams and special friend, Jen Blaha, of Osage. Jennie’s grandkids were a special part of her life: Jeff Fisher, of Dale City, Va., David Fisher, of Holyoke, Mass., Jackie (Matt) Hanna, of Stacyville, Chris (Kathy) Weber, of Lincoln, Neb., Adam Stevens, of Ames, Ricky Stevens, of Osage, Devon Adams, of Riceville, Dominique Adams, of Osage, and Jen’s daughters, Jasmine and Emma Blaha, of Osage. Great-grandma Jennie enjoyed time spent with her youngest family members: Jonathan Fisher of Wethersfield, Conn., Dylan, Taylor and Lanie Hanna of Stacyville, and Connor Weber of Lincoln, Neb. She is also survived by her brothers, Art Onken, of Osage, Jim (Jean) Onken, of Orchard; a sister, Donna Onken, of Omaha, Neb.; sister-in-law Ruth Onken, of Rudd; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Lynn Laverne Bauman of Schaumburg, 79, formerly of Charles City, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at Church Creek in Arlington Heights.


He was born Oct. 18, 1932, in Waverly. Lynn worked as a union painter decorator for over 40 years. He owned his own painting company for several years in the 1960s. He spent the majority of his career at M. Ecker and Company in Chicago. He enlisted in the Navy as a teenager and spent time at Midway Island and Moffet Field in California. He served in the Korean Conflict. Upon retiring in 1995, Lynn kept busy going on fishing trips and working on projects around his house and for family and friends.
 

He was the husband of the late Lorraine, who passed away in 2008; father of Linda (Darryl) Rosenzweig, James (Gina Abbatemarco) and Beth Bauman; grandfather of Rebecca and Joshua Rosenzweig, Alenna Abbatemarco-Bauman and Anan Bauman-Abbatemarco; brother of Lee (Bette) Bauman, Norma Thomas and the late Shirley George; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.

He received his G.E.D. certificate through the U.S. Army Reserves. He then attended business college in Mason City and received a certificate in computer technology. In 1955, he married Shirley Nettie Blum. To this union six children were born. The couple later divorced.
 

Gerry began working for John Deere in Waterloo until being injured. Following John Deere he received his truck driving certificate through Warren Transport and began his truck driving career that lasted over 25 years. In his early days Gerry enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling. Later in his life he had a passion for going to casinos with his mother, Violet. He loved to hang out at the Bradford House in Nashua to play the cherry machines and also playing the machines in Ionia. If he didn’t want to travel too far, he would just walk over to the tavern in Nashua and play the machine there. Gerry liked to talk about his trucking adventures with his children and anyone who would listen. He will be remembered for enjoying the simple things in life, especially playing cribbage and euchre with his friends and family.


Gerry is survived by his one daughter, Brenda (James) Gronwoldt of LeRoy, Minn.; three sons: Gerry Lee Martin Jr. of Waucoma, Keith Allen (Kathy) Martin of Bassett and Marty Mark Martin of LeRoy, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Cordell (Shirley) Martin of Nashua; two sisters, Karen (Roger) Jacobson of Omaha, Neb., and Ellen (Joe) Putney of Garner; as well as ex-wife Shirley Martin Benson of Nashua.
 

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Roy Edward Laverne Martin in infancy and Jeffrey Lynn Martin at the age of 26.

Gladys L. (Lockwood) Hitzhusen

GREENE — Funeral services for Gladys L. Hitzhusen, 102, of Greene, will be 11 a.m., Jan. 26, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Greene, with Pastor John Hanna officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.


Visitation will be 10-11 a.m., Jan. 26, at the United Methodist Church in Greene.
 

Gladys was born on May 8, 1909, in rural Marble Rock, Scott Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Harry and Maude (Farington) Marsh and died Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene. She received her education in public school, graduating from Greene High School in 1925 at the age of 16. Gladys continued her education for two additional years at Iowa State Teachers College. She taught fourth grade in Greeley for one year while also coaching basketball. Gladys stood only 4 feet 11-½ inches tall and her family boasts that she was the “Shortest basketball coach in history!”
 

She was united in marriage to Fred Lockwood on June 16, 1929, to that union were blessed five children. The couple lived on a farm near Marble Rock where Gladys worked very hard to raise her five children while taking care of the dairy cows, hogs and chickens. Later she raised turkeys on the farm. Her oldest son married and took over the farm in 1953. Gladys then moved to Greene where she taught fourth grade from 1953-1958.
 

On Feb. 4, 1958, she married Leon Hitzhusen. They enjoyed their life on a farm near Rockwell. She and Leon especially enjoyed their garden and fishing. After Leon passed away, Gladys moved to Mason City where she lived for several years before moving back to Greene. Gladys was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the Eastern Star. She loved to play violin and had over 30 violins in her personal collection. Gladys liked to write poetry and won an international award for one of her poems.
 

Gladys is survived by her four sons: Robert (Patricia) Lockwood of Charles City, James (Janet) Lockwood of Hiawatha, Dean (Ann) Lockwood of Sioux City and Lee (Tamara) Lockwood of Dows; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.


She is preceded in death by her two husbands, Fred Lockwood and Leon Hitzhusen; her daughter, Joan Hannah; three brothers: Walter Marsh, Willard Marsh, Dale Marsh; and a step-son, Jan Hitzhusen.

Myron “Red” Newton of Stafford passed away Monday Jan. 16, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va.
 

Red was born on Jan. 10, 1936, in Rudd to Irving and Lolabelle Pennell Newton, and is a veteran of the United States Navy. For several years, he also was a co-owner of an accounting and tax business in the Frederickburg area.
 

Red is survived by his wife of 52 years, Grace; his sons: Mark Andrew Newton and wife Lisa, Wade Patrick Newton, and Ira Daniel Newton and one daughter, Theresa Newton Jarrells and husband Jeffery; three brothers: Doyle and wife Dorothy, Charles and wife Jan and Leroy and wife Carol; as well as five grandchildren: Travis and Katelynn Jarrells, Lexi Rogers and Jacob and Hannah Newton. Red is also survived by a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Theodore Ray Mottinger was born Sept. 29, 1950, at Detroit, Mich., the son of Lawrence and LaResta (Koelling) Mottinger. He received his education in Tuson, Ariz. Theodore was a mechanic at heart and was part owner of Jerry’s Auto in California. He enjoyed fishing and camping but most of all watching, repairing and racing cars of all kinds. Theodore will be remembered as one of those persons who would “give the shirt off his back” to help someone.
 

Living family members include a son, Dustin (Sasha) Mottinger of Charles City; a step daughter, Wanda Love of Dubuque; a grandson, Tegan Mottinger; and two brothers, Carl Phillips and Tom (Tracie) Phillips both of Detroit, Mich.

Neoma June Waters Thompson was born June 19, 1932, at Colwell, the daughter of Earl and Fern (Erion) Waters. She graduated from the Colwell School. On Oct. 15, 1954, she was united in marriage to Johnnie Thompson. In 1961 they moved to Charles City where they would spend the rest of their lives. Neoma attended the First Congregational Church. Her interests included politics, Bible study, reading about Homeopathic Medicine and making stain glass. She enjoyed dining out with friends. Neoma was a dedicated Democrat. She also was an advocate for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
 

Neoma is survived by her son, “Dugan” Conrad Thompson of Charles City.
 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Johnnie on Nov. 15, 1999; and two sisters, Lorrayne Johnson and Margaret Bolton.

NASHUA — Robert L. Graham, 82, of Nashua, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Robert Lee Graham was born Dec. 18, 1929, on the family farm in rural Butler County, near Bristow, the son of John and Minnie (Diekman) Graham. He received his education in rural country school. As a young man, Robert worked several jobs and also spent many years working at the Standard Station in Nashua. On March 6, 1947, in Austin, Minn., he married Delores Albaugh. To this union four children were born. The couple made Nashua their home and Robert worked at the former White Farm Equipment Co. in Charles City from 1958 until his health forced him to quit working in 1984.
 

Robert enjoyed dancing, bowling and camping. He loved to spend time with his family and took all his grandchildren with him when he went camping. He will be remembered by his family for having either a grandchild or his dog perched in his lap. Robert will also be remembered by his family for being handy and helping them on their home improvement projects. Robert and Delores were active members of the United Methodist Church in Nashua.
 

Survivors include his wife of over 65 years, Delores; two daughters, Sharon (James) Haskovec, of Charles City, and Joan Graham, of Nashua; two sons, Bob (Diane) Graham Jr., of Wichita, Kan., and Les (Barb) Graham, of Eyota, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Brad (Pam) Powers, Erin (Lane) Johnson, Jill Graham, Emily (Russ) Gehling, Lisa (Tom) Hauk, Andrew Graham and Kara Graham; seven great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Ron Krueger, of Zebulon, N.C.; a sister-inlaw, Jean Graham, of Charles City; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mitzi R. Putney

Mitzi R. Putney, 50, of Lombard, Ill., formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at home with her family at her side.
 

Funeral services for Mitzi Putney will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home.
 

Sr. Diana Blong will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.
 

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday where there will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday an hour prior to the service.


Mitzi Rae Johnson Putney was born June 16, 1961, at Charles City, the daughter of Laverne “John” and Virginia (Sullivan) Johnson. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1979. On June 18, 1983, she was united in marriage to Anthony Putney. To this union four children were born. The couple lived in Charles City for five years before moving to Illinois. Mitzi loved to bowl with her family and friends before she became ill. Other interests included working crossword puzzles, reading and spending time with family and friends. Mitzi always looked forward to sharing her life with her family especially her granddaughter, Harlow.
 

Living family members include her husband, Anthony, of Lombard, Ill; four children: Amber (Ryan) Putney, of Wells, Minn., Adam (Maria) Putney, of Bolingbrook, Ill., Allen (Nikki) Putney, of Big Rock, Ill., and Ashlee Putney, of Lombard, Ill.; her father Laverne “John” and stepmother, Florene Johnson, of Charles City; a granddaughter, Harlow Putney; her twin brother, Mark (Lori) Johnson, of Charles City; two sisters, Sheryl (David) Jeffrey, of Charles City and Nancy (Bryan) Boggess, of Ankeny; her mother-in-law, Victoria Putney, of Charles City; a brotherin- law, Francis (Patricia) Putney, of Spring Grove, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Beverley (John) Chris Havens, of Lake Geneva, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
 

She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Johnson; maternal grandparents, Ted and Tena Johnson; a brother, Robert Johnson in infancy; her father-in-law, Alfred Putney; and step father, Darrell “Dean” Tynan.

Kenneth L. Johnston

NASHUA — Kenneth L. Johnston, Sr., 95, of Nashua, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, with military honors by the Nashua VFW Post. Casket bearers are Pat Johnston, Jason Johnston, Jeremy Johnston, Tim Fritze, Kevin Demro and Christopher Johnston.
 

Friends may greet the family an hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Tuesday. Online condolences for Kenneth's family may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com Kenneth Leo Johnston, Sr., was born May 15, 1916, in Stuart, the son of Earl and Mabel (Jones) Johnston. In 1941, he married Jeanne Sulentic at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waterloo. To this union three sons were born. On March 10, 1944, he was inducted into the United States Army. He served during WWII in the Philippines and received an honorable discharge on April 16, 1946.
 

Kenneth and Jeanne initially lived in Mason City where he worked for the former Fox Deluxe Beer Distribution Company. The couple later moved to Waterloo where Kenneth went to work for John Deere and Wonder Bread. They later moved to Ft. Worth, Texas, and he worked at the Convair Aircraft Corporation and also ran his own construction company building and remodeling homes in the Ft. Worth area. In 1960, the couple bought a farm north of Bassett and farmed for the next several years. While back in Iowa, he also worked at the former Oliver Tractor Company in Charles City. In the 1970, he started Wick Homes, building and selling homes in the area until the mid 1990s. The couple retired into Nashua in 1995. Kenneth’s hobby was work and he continued to enjoy woodworking and puzzles as he grew older.

Survivors include two sons, Peter (Becky) Johnston, of Ionia, and Mike (Carolyn) Johnston, of Clarksville; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-step grandchild.
 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Kenneth Johnston Jr.; three brothers and three sisters.

 



Roger Staebler

ARCADIA, Calif. — Roger Staebler left our world on Jan. 20, 2012, after a valiant battle with cancer.

He was born on July 29, 1934, the son of Kenneth and Frances Waidlich Staebler.
 

The family moved to Charles City at an early age where Roger received the majority of his education graduating in l951. He and his identical twin brother, Ronald, were piano students of Earl Stewart. They earned scholarships to the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music graduating in l952 with masters degrees in concert piano and English. Roger later earned a doctorate in education from the University of Southern California.
 

The twins served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56 playing concerts in Europe.
 

Roger was married to Jacqueline Kautman, also from Charles City, in 1956. Shortly after they married they moved to Pasadena, Calif., and then to nearby Arcadia where they have since resided. Roger was a principal and teacher in California schools.
 

Roger was always learning, widely read and always ready for a lively discussion on economics or politics. The family regularly attended the opera. He collected rare books and art. His was an adventurous spirit traveling the highways and byways and loved family walks in the arboretum.
 

He claimed Charles City as his hometown, returning for the Fourth of July family reunions annually at the home they bought and restored in Charles City.
 

Surviving Roger is his wife and two daughters: Deborah Robert, of Charles City, and Renate Lewis; three grandchildren: Andrea and Charles Robert and Roger Lewis; and two great-grandchildren, brother Ronald and sister Barbara Boleng.
 

Preceding Roger in death were his parents and his sister Bernita Larsh Lewis.
 

Condolences may be sent to Jacqueline at 1335 S. Second Avenue, Arcadia, CA 91006. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memorial Garden in Charles City at a later date.




Donna L. Baldwin

Donna L. Baldwin, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.
 

Memorial services for Donna Baldwin will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date, The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service.
 

Donna Lorraine Springer Baldwin was born April 14, 1925, in Floyd County, the daughter of Sam and Grace (Church) Springer. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1943. On Aug. 17, 1945, she was united in marriage to Darrell Baldwin. Over the years Donna worked at the Oliver Cooperation and as a Medication Aide at Salsbury Baptist Home. She liked animals of all kinds. Family was very important to Donna and she looked forward to sharing her life with them.
 

Living family members include a daughter, Sharon (Roger) Mc-Donald, of Mason City; three grandchildren: Darrell (Cecelia) Mc-Donald, Jason (Sue) McDonald and Christian (Karen) McDonald; a granddaughter-in-law, Kristy McDonald; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Doug “Butch” McDonald; three brothers; two sisters; and special pet, Joey.
