William Arthur Whitman
 
 
 

William Arthur Whitman, 84 of Banning California, died on Friday April 21, 2006, from complications following a stroke at his home.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, April 26, at Desert Lawn Cemetery, Calimesa, Calif., where he was laid to rest beside his wife Clarice, who passed away on May 23, 1990.

Bill was born in Massacusetts on July 3, 1921, the son of Chester Arthur and Alice (Riley) Whitman. Bill married Clarice Ada Hunn on December 5, 1943, in Rapid City, S.D. Bill and Clarice made their home in Charles City during the 1960's. Bill worked at the Oliver Corporation and Clarice was the manager of the Holiday Diner. They moved to Banning California in 1969.

Survivors include his two sons: Richard (Dorene) Whitman of Cathedral City, Calif., and William (Brenda) Whitman of Pine Crest, Calif. Three grandchildren: Wendy (Jim) Olsen, Norman, Ok., Steven (Carolyn) Whitman, Antioch, Calif., and Erica (Richard) Heywood, Cathedral City, Calif.; eight great-grandchildren: Rachael, Matthew and Natalie Olsen, Norman, Ok., Taylor and Madison Whitman, Antioch, Calif., and Zachary, BreeAnn and Joshua Garcia, Cathedral City; as well as one step great grandson, Cody Duncan of Antioch, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

GREENE - Funeral services for Ruth Mae Viers, 90, formerly of 407 1/2 Courtland Street, Greene will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, with Rev. Ashok Patet and Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel and will continue Wednesday one hour before services.

Ruth Mae Viers was born April 6, 1916 in rural Greene a daughter of Archie and Cora (Skillen) Raymond and died Saturday, April 29, 2006 at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison.

NASHUA — Randall L. “Randy” Niedert, 78, of Nashua and formerly of Horton, died Saturday afternoon, April 29, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 3, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with Pastors Elaine and David Werges officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery at Waverly.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 2 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Gary Jay Wallace
 
 

PELLA - Gary Jay Wallace of Pella and formerly of Knoxville passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Hospice Comfort House in Pella at the age of 65 years.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, May 3, at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville at 10:30 a.m. with interment in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Friends may call at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m.

Gary Jay Wallace was born on Sept. 21, 1940, in Pella. He was the only child of Henrietta Buyert and Robert Dale Wallace. Gary graduated from Pella High School in 1958 and from Central College in 1962. On July 28, 1961, Gary was united in marriage to Marilyn Jean TerLouw. To this union, two daughters were born. Gary taught and coached baseball, basketball, track and football in Knoxville until his retirement in 1996. He continued to coach track and football until 2003.

Those left to honor his passing are his wife of 44 years, Marilyn of Pella; two daughters, Laura Wallace and Bob Aringdale of Charles City and Jana Windt and her husband, Troy, of Maple Grove, Minn.; six grandchildren; mother-in-law Leona TerLouw; sister-in-law Nancy (Mark) McCaune of Des Moines; and brother-in-law Andy (Susan) TerLouw of Kellogg.

Ethan John Schriever Gates, infant son of Brandon and Jessica (Loftus) Gates, was stillborn April 26, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Private services for Ethan Gates were held Monday, May 1, at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery at Lourdes.

Ethan is survived by his parents; paternal grandparents, Brad and Lauri Reetz of Floyd, and Matt and Linda Gates of Byron, Minn.; maternal grandparents, Sean and Cherie Schweinfurth of Charles City; paternal great-grandparents, Larry and Carol Schriever of Floyd, Dick and Carol Gates of Lime Springs and Muriel Reetz of Elma; maternal great-grandparents, Becky Loftus of Charles City and Daryl and Myrna Jakoubek of Floyd; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandfather, Sonny Reetz; and maternal great-grandfathers, Bob Loftus and Kenneth Schweinfurth.

Charlene Ann Roeming
 
 

GREEN LAKE, Wis. — Charlene Ann Roeming, 65, of Green Lake, Wis., passed away on Monday morning, May 1, 2006, at Berlin Memorial Hospital.

She was born on June 22, 1940, in Oshkosh, Wis., a daughter of Gilbert and Jeanette (Steinert) Grabner. Charlene graduated from Waupun High School in 1958, and then attended St. Agnes School of Nursing in Fond du lac, where she received training to become a L.P.N. On Dec. 23, 1961, she married Roy Roeming in Waupun. She worked at Bethel Home of Oshkosh, retiring in 1997, and enjoyed her retirement years while working at Juliette Manor in Berlin. Charlene belonged to the Federated Church of Green Lake and volunteered her time at the church library.

She is survived by her husband Roy of Green Lake; three sons, Mark (Cindy) Roeming of Oshkosh, Matthew (Janet) Roeming of West Bend, Wis., and Michael (Julie) Roeming of Winneconne, Wis.; one daughter, Mary Charlier of Green Lake; 11 grandchildren, Cassidy, Landon, Carmen, Charlie, Paul, Samantha, Jenna, Amanda, Jessica, Airelle and Emily; one sister, Kathy Faker of Oshkosh; a niece Jennifer (Robert) Kujawa of Madison; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Larry.

A time of gathering for Charlene Ann Roeming will be held at the Federated Church of Green Lake on Sunday, May 7, 2006, from 1-2 p.m. A memorial service for Charlene Ann Roeming will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2006, at the Federated Church of Greene Lake with the Rev. Karen Gygax Rodriguez officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Christian Education and Library Fund at the Federated Church of Green Lake.

RUDD - Viola L. Jones Rasmusson, 98, formerly of 105 Depot St. Apt. 2 in Rudd, died Sunday morning, April 30, 2006, at the Nora Springs Care Center, where she has resided since May of 2002.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at the United Methodist Church, 611 6th St. in Rudd with the Rev. Jim Turner officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, rural Rudd.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St. in Rockford. The visitation will continue at the Rudd United Methodist Church, one hour prior to Viola’s service on Wednesday.

BANNING, Calif. — William Arthur Whitman, 84 of Banning Calif., died on Friday April 21, 2006, from complications following a stroke at his home.

Ardamae Sieling

 
 

Ardamae Sieling, 83, of Rudd, died Monday, May 1, 2006, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A memorial service for Ardamae Sieling will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag, of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service.

Ardamae Sieling was born May 6, 1922, in Vinton, the daughter of Arthur and Laura (Mealhouse) Steinke. She received her education at the Rudd High School. On Nov. 27, 1938, she was married to Cecil Kleen. They later divorced. She then married William Sieling on Dec. 30, 1973, at Nora Springs. During her working career Ardamae was employed with Mode-O-Day Sewing Factory in Mason City. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors. Her interests included collecting antiques, making quilts and doll clothes, gardening and yard work.

Living family include three children, Dennis Kleen of Chino Valley, Ariz., Darrel (Carol) Kleen of Diamond Bar, Calif., and Darla Billings; her significant other, Larry Kerchner of Chino Valley, Ariz.; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and six half brothers, and sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on Dec. 24, 1998; four brothers; and two sisters.

Nile Lewis
 
 

CORALVILLE — Nile Lewis, 56, of 1906 13th St., Coralville, died Wednesday May 3, 2006, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following a sudden illness.

Nile’s wishes were to be cremated. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 7, at 11 a.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City, with the Rev. Judy Gingerich officiating. There will be a gathering on Saturday, May 6, from noon to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Nile’s name.

Nile was born June 28, 1949, in Des Moines, the son of Leon Warren and Beverly Jane Lewis. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1967 and attended Marshalltown Community College. He served in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Bronze Star by Congress for his valor in combat during the Vietnam War. On Jan. 16, 1981, Nile married Carolyn Lunde in Iowa City.

Nile was the patient transportation coordinator at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he was employed for 25 years.

Nile was truly one of a kind. Those who knew him appreciated his great sense of humor. Nile loved golfing, cooking, computers and most of all, his family. He will be greatly missed.

Nile is survived by his wife of 25 years, Carolyn; three children, Michelle (Keith) Hasner of Lakeville, Minn., Stacy Lewis of Savage, Minn., and Jodi (Joe) Hoelsken of Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren, Shayne, Alyson and Michael Hasner; his mother, Jane (John) Carpenter of Charles City; two brothers, Mark (Cindy) Lewis of San Clemente, Calif., and Rob (Jodee) Lewis of Mission Viejo, Calif.; three sisters, Beth (Rod) Wilson of Nashua, Kim (Ralph) Hennessy of New Hampton and Kris Lewis of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

 
 

Nile was preceded in death by his father Warren.

James Dean Jacobson was born on Dec. 17, 1959, in Charles City, the son of Glenn and Diann (Lubbert) Jacobson. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1978. Jamie worked for Combined Insurance, Bob Elthon Ford and Iowa Insulation until his health forced him to retire. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and playing pool.

Living family members include his parents Glenn and Diann Jacobson of Charles City; a brother, Kevin (Carol) Jacobson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

MENOMINEE, Mich. — Loren B. “Larry” Koesling, 82, of N. 516 W. Fairland Circle, Menominee, Mich., passed away on Friday, May 5, 2006, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation was Monday, May 8, at Kell-Walker Funeral Home, Menominee, Mich. Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11 a.m., today, May 9, at Resurrection Church, with Fr. Francis Degroot officiating. Graveside committal services will be held following mass at Riverside Cemetery with military rites performed by 20 Year Club.

The son of the late Louis and Kathryn (Nicklay) Koesling was born May 23, 1923, in Barnesville, Minn. He graduated from Perham High School in 1941. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army where he served his country in the Pacific during World War II. He married Betty Snyder on Feb. 27, 1954, in Charles City.

While living in Charles City, he worked for KCHA radio station. In 1954, he moved to Menominee, where he was co-owner and manager of WAGN Radio until 1983. In 1983, he sold the radio station and began working for Menominee County as veteran’s service officer and head of emergency government, a position he held until 1992 when he retired.

He is a member of Resurrection Church, Knights of Columbus, Menominee American Legion Post 146 and Menominee VFW Post 1887. Larry loved sports of all types. He coached Menominee Little League Team of 1961 to the final four and was the voice of the Menominee Maroons for years.

He is survived by his wife Betty; five sons, Chuck (Peggy Stromgren) of Menominee, Jim (Samantha) of Marinette, Scott (Linda) of Menominee, Kit of Menominee and Steve (Lisa) of Great Falls, Mont.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Monie Krekelberg of North St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers, Cecil of Dallas, Texas and James (Jan) of White Bear Lake, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Carol Koesling of North St. Paul, Minn.; one brother-in-law, Dennis Schlosser of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.

William R. Borchard Sr.
 
 

MARBLE ROCK — Funeral services for William R. Borchard Sr., 90, of Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13, 2006, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marble Rock with Pastor Patricia Shaw officiating.

Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford, where military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Honor Guard Post 4868 of Clear Lake.

William Richard Borchard was born Nov. 16, 1915, in rural Scott Township, Floyd County, a son of Richard and Martha (Zitzow) Borchard; and died Thursday, March 2, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

He received his education at the Oak Country School in Scott Township, and was a 1932 graduate of the Marble Rock High School. Following graduation, he assisted in the family farming operation. On Dec. 1, 1941, he entered the United States Army Air Force. He served with the 8th Army Air Force in Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland, where he was awarded one silver service star and one bronze service star for the above campaign. He was honorably discharged as Master Sergeant on Aug. 25, 1945.

He resumed farming in Scott Township, and on Aug. 15, 1947, he was united in marriage to Doris A. Fisher at Bemidji, Minn. They farmed in the Greene and Marble Rock area until 1971, when they moved to Clear Lake. They returned to Marble Rock in 1982, following their retirement. Bill was also a crop adjuster for Farm Bureau for 13 years. He was an active member of Stroud Gates Post 387 of Marble Rock and Post 4868 V.F.W. of Clear Lake. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed traveling. He was a life long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Marble Rock.

Living family members include; one daughter: Phyllis A. Sweet of Asheville, N.C.; two sons: William R. Jr. (Donna) of Marble Rock and Roger J. (Dovie) of Oxford, Ala.; eight grandchildren, William III, Sarah, Stephanie, Samantha, Jay, Lisa, Raymond and Lori; numerous great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Carol Rohwedder of Greene and Irene Kiehn of Ft. Lupton, Colo.

 
 

He was preceded in death by his wife Doris on May 16, 1994; his parents; two sisters, Catherine Miller and Helen Pooley; and two brothers, Charles Borchard and John Borchard; as well as one granddaughter Robin Sweet.

MASON CITY — Ida K. Hall, 93, of Mason City, died Sunday, May 7, 2006, at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Carl Ries, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar View Cemetery, rural Ionia.

Friends may call Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service.

Ida Kathryn Kilby Hall was born July 31, 1912, in Billingham, Wash., the daughter of James and Marthat (Buckley) Kilby. In 1933, Ida was united in marriage to Mike Hall in Albert Lea, Minn. She worked for several years at Swift in Des Moines. Ida enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends.

Living family members include two step-daughters, Mildred (Donald) Davis of McMinniville, Ore., and Margaret (Bob) Goldsbury of Titusville, Fla.; many nieces and nephews, including James (Delia) Kilby of Greene and Kenneth “Mike” (Donna) Kilby of Austin, Minn.; and several half brothers and sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and six brothers and sisters.

Pauline Marie Nockels

 
 

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Pauline Marie Nockels, 84, of Scottsdale, Ariz. and formerly of Charles City, Iowa, beloved wife and mother, departed this earth in the arms of God on May 10, 2006, at Shadow Mountain Healthcare Center, Scottsdale. Her family is thankful to the nursing staff, caregivers and Hospice for helping her through these difficult last few months.

Pauline was born June 26, 1921, in Alta Vista, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Koudelka) Kobliska. She was a graduate of Colwell Consolidated High School. In 1941, she met and married her husband Don on Oct. 28, in Charles City.

Pauline was a former member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Mesa, Ariz., and Immaculate Conception Church, Charles City, where she was a member of St. Joseph’s Circle. She enjoyed playing 500, UNO, learning to golf and, most of all, she enjoyed her family, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She especially loved her annual trip back to Iowa to visit with family and friends.

Private family services are pending at Hansen Mortuary, Scottsdale, and a Memorial Mass will be held at a later date at the Immaculate Conception Church, Charles City.

She is survived by her beloved husband Don, four children and spouses; Catherine and William Walsh, Scottsdale; Thomas and Patricia Nockels, Des Moines, Diane and Rick Oelerich, Davenport; and Charles Nockels, Des Moines; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Amy Hennagir of Charles City, and Lorraine Talyat, Pismo Beach, Calif. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Arlene Greenwood, Helen Smalley, Frances Smalley and her parents.

CLOUD, Minn. — A memorial service will be held at 12:45 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2006, at the Daniel Funeral Home Chapel in St. Cloud, Minn., for William D. “Bill” Brown, 81, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., who died Wednesday, May 10. Bill was born on Nov. 17, 1924, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada, to James and Nada (Beam) Brown. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Saskatoon, Sask. After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan he moved to Charles City, Iowa, where he was employed by Oliver tractors. Bill married Phyllis Schauer in 1955 in Charles City. In 1971, they moved with their four children to Detroit Lakes, where they owned and operated Brown’s Breezy Shore Resort. Bill and Phyllis retired in 1982 and remained in Detroit Lakes. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in the yard and all mechanical things.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 50 years; children, Bonnie (Stephen) Bologna, Kenneth (Ann), Brian (Patrice), Peggy (Andrew) Steffl; grandchildren, Michael, James, Joe and Elizabeth Bologna, Hosea, Theodore and Sarah Brown, Tyler, David and Paul Brown and Tony, Mark and AJ Steffl; sister Corinne Lamb of Saskatoon; two nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Donald Dexheimer, 92, of Norwich, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2006, at Rosewood Estates Nursing Home in Syracuse, N.Y.

Born in Spencer, S.D., he was born sixth in a family of nine children to Carl and Carrie Dexheimer. He graduated from Edgerton Consolidated High School in Farmer, S.D., and received his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D.

He worked for Standard Drug in Cleveland, Ohio, before marrying Marian Downey in 1941. He then worked for Salsbury Laboratories in Charles City, starting in 1944.

After 21 years, he went to work for Norwich Pharmaceutical in Norwich, N.Y. He retired from Proctor and Gamble in 1982 after 17 years.

He is predeceased by his wife, Marian, in 1979 and his daughter, Caroline, in 2006.

Donald is survived by two sons, Milton Dexheimer of Brewerton, N.Y., and Carl Dexheimer of West Des Moines; one sister, Dorothy Becker of Silver Springs, Md.; one grandson, Sasan Sattari of Aurora, Colo.; three granddaughters, Kian Schuemann of Payton, Colo., Shannah Baldwin of Waukee, and Amy Aleksiejczyk of Davenport; and nine great-grandchildren.

Gordon Skuster, 81, of Charles City, died Friday, May 19, 2006, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Gordon Wilbur Skuster was born Jan. 10, 1925, at Osage, the son of Rasmus and Elizabeth(Warrington) Skuster. He graduated from the Mitchell public school and attended Iowa State University and later transferred to St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. Gordon returned home and began his farming career. On Aug. 27, 1950, he was united in marriage to Gloria Ellefson at Osage. They lived and farmed north of Osage, moving to Charles City in 1967. In addition to farming, Gordon was a successful real estate broker and developer and also built several homes in Charles City. He also developed and owned several farm and retail related businesses. Gordon was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church, served on various church committees and held several church council positions. He enjoyed the outdoors and farming and leaves behind a thriving farming operation. Those who knew Gordon will remember him as a kind and caring person who was always ready to lend a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gloria Skuster of Charles City; five sons and their wives, Eric and Patty Skuster of Waverly, David and Janis Skuster of Stewartville, Minn., Paul and Ann Skuster of Charles City, Timothy and Denise Skuster of Salt Lake City, Utah, and William and Sally Skuster of Chicago, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Kimberly, Kara, Andrew, Cassandra, Nathan, Megan, Garrett and Colton Skuster; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Tjaden; his mother-in-law Orpha Ellefson; a sister-in-law Shirley Guthart; and many nieces and nephews.

 
 

He was preceded in death by his parents; two granddaughters, Kelsey and Sarah Skuster; two sisters; and two brothers.

DENVER, Iowa - Ryan James Johnson, infant son of Mikel and Jamie (Rippentrop) Johnson of Denver was born and lived for a short time on May 20, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Ryan is survived by his parents; one sister, Reese; his paternal grandparents James & Evelyn Johnson of Elma; his maternal grandparents Dennis & Cindy Rippentrop of Charles City; one great-grandparent, Agnes Hartman of Crystal Lake; five uncles and aunts, Heather, Amber, Dustin and Brandon Rippentrop, all of Charles City, and Steven Johnson of Elma.

Mervin Lloyd Hinrichsen was born Jan. 14, 1918, in rural Nora Springs, Floyd County, a son of John and Helen (Thompson) Hinrichsen, and died Monday, May 22, 2006, at his home in rural Marble Rock.

When John was 14 years old, he suffered the loss of his mother. Shortly thereafter he made his home with Guy and Mae Barr in rural Marble Rock. John was always grateful to the Barrs, who made it possible for him to attend Marble Rock High School where he graduated in 1937. John fondly remembered his very first suit given to him by the Barrs for graduation. He played baseball and basketball as a youth and, in later years, enjoyed following the Minnesota Twins and Iowa Hawkeye basketball.

As a young man, he worked for area farmers, including Leo and Clement Staudt. On Sept. 4, 1938, he was united in marriage to Alma Jean Smith in Marble Rock. John worked for Walter Marsh as a farmhand for several years. In 1945, Dan & Clyde Frudden, along with Charles Crouse, made it financially possible for John to purchase his own farm, where he lived until his death.

John was a member of the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock, former board member of the Farmer Co-op Elevator in Marble Rock and Floyd County Mutual Insurance, and was a dealer for Funk’s Seed Corn.

 
 

Living family members include his loving wife of 67 years, Alma Jean of the Rockwell Nursing Home; daughter Judy (Larry) Staudt of Marble Rock; son Dennis Hinrichsen of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Carla Beek, Cathy Lindell, Christa Tusha, Robin Lauber, Tracy Cook, Chad Hinrichsen and Rachel Christensen; 15 great grandchildren; and sister Norma (Eugene) Ewald of Marble Rock.

Wayne Ernest Zimmer was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Floyd County, the son of Ernest and Ruth (Hoger) Zimmer. In 1935, he graduated from Charles City High School. Wayne was a T5 Corporal in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. On May 15, 1946, he was united in marriage to Viola Krumm at Elma. During his working career, he was employed at the Oliver/White Farm Corporation for 36-1/2 years and, after retirement, worked part-time at the YMCA and at the Charles City Country Club. Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, playing pool and playing cards. He was a member of the V.F.W., the Senior Citizens Center and U.A.W. Retirees.

Living family members include his wife Viola; sons Gerald “Jerry” Zimmer and special friend Cathy Diercks of Charles City, and Jim Zimmer of Lockport, Ill.; grandson Kurt (Andrea) Zimmer of Seymour, Ind.; and brother Bernard (Madgie) Zimmer of Texarkana, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carol Springer; and a brother, Donald Zimmer.

Carol June Norman Ransom was born May 10, 1922, in Franklin County, the daughter of Charles and Carrie (Laudner) Norman. She graduated from Ionia High School in 1939. On June 4, 1940, she was united in marriage to Willard Ransom at Ionia. Willard died in 1970. Carol married Herman Ransom on Feb. 2, 1972, at Lyle, Minn. They lived in Rose Creek, Minn., and moved to Charles City in 1979. Herman died in 1996. Carol worked in the Chickasaw County treasurer’s office for several years. She was a member of Bethany Alliance Church. Carol was a volunteer at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Chickasaw County Historical Society and for Hospice of North Iowa. Her interests included reading, traveling, cooking and making afghans and comforters. Carol’s family was always important to her and she looked forward to spending time with them.

Family members include four children, Errol “Douglas” (Gudelia) Ransom of Lynnwood, Calif., Charles Ransom of Arnold, Mo., Terry (Jackie) Ransom of Clarksville and Karen (Roger) Huisman of St. Ignace, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; three great-

grandchildren; and two brothers, Louis Norman of Albia and Dr. Lowell Norman of Corpus Christi, Texas.

John Charles Neeling
 
 

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - John Charles Neeling, 53, formerly of Charles City, died May 14, 2006 of natural causes in Klamath Falls, Ore.

A celebration of life potluck gathering for his friends, family and co-workers was held May 25, at his home.

Mr. Neeling was born Feb. 26, 1953, in Sacramento, Calif., to William C. and Betty (Rumme) Neeling. His family moved to Emmetsburg, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1971.

In 1976, Mr. Neeling earned a B.S. in resource conservation from the University of Montana. He then served in the Peace Corps in Ecuador, where he met and married Maggie Dowd. They were married for 20 years.

He worked as a civilian firefighter at Air Force bases in New Hampshire and Nevada, and then worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon, New Mexico, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. He also worked at the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon.

He recently moved to Klamath Falls as the Fremont-Winema National Forests' community development specialist. Mr. Neeling married Trish Lindaman on Sept. 5, 2004, at Sprague River Park.

 
 

Mr. Neeling enjoyed mountain biking, camping, hiking, backpacking and sea kayaking.

He is survived by his wife, Trish; sister and brother-in-law, Melody and Roger Newton of Rockford, Ill., and nephew, Matt Ceruitti of Milwaukee, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William C. Neeling Jr.

Archie V. Martin
 
 

Archie V. Martin, 96, of Charles City, was born Nov. 12, 1909, in Farmington. He passed away Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Private family services will be held at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, today, May 30, with Rev. Jim Stiles and Rev. Jo Frahm-Watkins officiating.

He was educated in the Farmington, Iowa school system. He began his career as a singer having his own radio show on WIAS radio station in Ottumwa and performing at numerous concerts and social events. He worked as a machinist in Rockford, Ill., and Moline, Ill. It was from Northern Ordinance in Minneapolis, where he was drafted for the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, N.M. After World War II, he collaborated with his brother Bill to form Martin Brothers Paint Contractors in Charles City, where they built a successful business. A heart attack in 1972 forced his retirement.

He was an avid lover of the outdoors. His passions were fishing and hunting, having made numerous trips to Alaska, Canada and most of the United States, in pursuit of the outdoor experience. He was a human encyclopedia on the identification of any flower, tree, bird, animal or insect. He also enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens, taking pride in his “county fair-sized” produce. He was also an engaging storyteller with a phenomenal memory. In sports, the Cubs were always tuned in on his TV.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie, of 72 years; daughters, Kathryn Herbrechtsmeyer and Charlotte Springer of Charles City, Debbra (Scott) Metcalf of Mason City, Brenda (Gary) Molitor of Mason City; son, James and wife Sonja Martin of Minaki, Ontario, Canada; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sister, Eloise Schultz of Olathe, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Lynnette in 1959; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

 
 

He will always be remembered for his incredible zest for life which helped him overcome the numerous medical challenges he encountered.



Greg ‘Krafty’ Kraft
 
 

OSAGE — Greg “Krafty” Kraft, 35, of Osage, died Friday, May 26, 2006, at his home in Osage. Greg was born Sept. 3, 1970, in Charles City, the son of Gary and Wanda (Thompson) Kraft of Rockford.

He attended school in Nashua and Nora Springs-Rock Falls. Greg was a very devoted father to his two girls and lived for his daughters, family, and friends. Learning his trade at his father’s knee, Greg was a self-taught mechanic that could fix or build anything. Everyone benefited from his knowledge when they visited “Krafty” at Bree’s Tire Service, where he was employed. He had a passion for anything with a motor and wheels, and started driving cars before he could barely see over the steering wheel. He was very proud of his “big boy toys,” and, in conversation, his favorite saying was “Purrfect.” Greg was an awesome friend who was well-known and highly respected. He was always willing to lend a hand and you only had to meet him once to know what a truly special individual he was.

Greg will always be remembered for his incredibly quick wit and sense of humor, and his loving soul. Even though he took a piece of those who knew him when he left us, we want Greg to know that we will always think of him when we see a Pro-Street S-10 Chevy flying down the highway.

Greg is survived by his daughters Britny and Billi Jo Kraft of Osage; his parents Gary and Wanda Kraft of Rockford; sister Pam Kraft of Osage; brother Brian (Tabitha) Kraft of Colwell; and numerous other loving family members. He is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and his step-grandfather.

Born on Nov. 15, 1950, at Colwell, he was the youngest child born to Melvin and Velva (Lincke) Meyer. He received his education in the area of his birth and graduated with Charles City High School’s Class of 1968. Later, he received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Jan served our country honorably in the armed forces and was employed in various fields including agricultural sales and most recently insurance.

Jan will be fondly remembered for his love of family, his sense of humor—sometimes being the king of cornball jokes—his dedication to the Green Bay Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes and New York Yankees, and for enjoying playing the drums in a country-western band in years past.

Jan was married to Catherine Schwickerath and to this union two daughters, Emily and Lyndsey, were born. On Feb. 10, of this year, he was united in marriage to Arlene Lang in Marshalltown.

Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife Arlene; two daughters, Emily (Jason) Wegner of West Des Moines and Lyndsey (Donnie) Manderfield of Waucoma, and their children Reese and Logan; step-son Scott Lang, and his children Dominique and Sean of Marshalltown; his mother Velva in Charles City; sisters and brothers, Sondra (Larry) Coen of Charles City, Linda (Bernard) Krall of Loveland, Colo., Dennis (Wanda) Meyer of Elma, and Dana Meyer of Charles City; his mother-in-law Florence Lang of Marshalltown; Arlene’s family; and numerous friends, nieces, nephews and cousins.

 
 

In death he has rejoined his father Melvin; and father-in-law Sylvester Lang.


 
John Charles Neeling
 
 
 

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - John Charles Neeling, 53, formerly of Charles City, died May 14, 2006, of natural causes in Klamath Falls, Ore.

A celebration of life potluck gathering for his friends, family and co-workers was held May 25, at his home.

Mr. Neeling was born Feb. 26, 1953, in Sacramento, Calif., to William C. and Betty (Rumme) Neeling. His family moved to Emmetsburg, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1971.

In 1976, Mr. Neeling earned a B.S. in resource conservation from the University of Montana. He then served in the Peace Corps in Ecuador, where he met and married Maggie Dowd. They were married for 20 years.

He worked as a civilian firefighter at Air Force bases in New Hampshire and Nevada, and then worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon, New Mexico, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. He also worked at the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon.

He recently moved to Klamath Falls as the Fremont-Winema National Forests' community development specialist. Mr. Neeling married Trish Lindaman on Sept. 5, 2004, at Sprague River Park.

 
 

Mr. Neeling enjoyed mountain biking, camping, hiking, backpacking and sea kayaking.

He is survived by his wife, Trish; sister and brother-in-law, Melody and Roger Newton of Rockford, Ill.; and nephew, Matt Ceruitti of Milwaukee, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William C. Neeling Jr.

Glenn Greenzweig, 95, of Mercedes, Texas, died Monday, May 29, 2006, at the Valley Grande Manner Nursing Home in Weslaco,Texas.

Funeral services for Glenn Greenzweig will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday.
