John M. Carpenter

John M. Carpenter, 87, of Charles City, died Aug. 1, 2006, in Colorado.

Memorial services for John Carpetner will be held at 7 p.m on. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Tom Hagen, of St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua, will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends from 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ethel Genevieve Cave

WAVERLY — Ethel Genevieve Cave, 91, of Waverly, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

Genevieve was born on Aug. 29, 1914, near Shell Rock, the daughter of Clifton B. and Maude (Metzger) Hunter. She started school in a country school near her home and then graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1932. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls for two years.

On April 25, 1935 she was united in marriage to Earl E. Cave at her parents’ home near Shell Rock. They made their home in Waverly, where they raised their daughters. While the girls were still young, Genevieve played organ for First Baptist Church and substituted at other churches when needed. For 10 years she served as the head organist for Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly and for more than 40 years was the organist for Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly.

In the early 1990s, she retired as a professional organist and played simply for pleasure. In November 1995, her husband Earl was hospitalized and Genevieve moved to Shell Rock Health Care Center. Earl died in 1996 and Genevieve continued living at the care center until moving to Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly.

She was a longtime, faithful member of First Baptist Church in Waverly, where she was involved in all aspects of the music of the church. She also served the Women’s circles of the church, until her ill health slowed her down.

She is survived by her five daughters, Janice (Thomas) Kay of Wheaton, Ill., Judith Kahler of Waverly, Virginia (John) Ruzicka of Marble Rock, Noma Cave of Chicago, and Rebecca (Richard) Radel of Stillwater, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, Cathy (Rich Cooper) Kay, Robert (Barbara) Kay, John (Catherine) Kay, Jan (Robin) Kahler, Kirby (Angela) Kahler, Kent (Val) Kahler, Kyle Kahler, Carrie (Craig) Grebner, Malinda (Mark) Carlson, John (Michelle) Ruzicka, Brett (Evie) Radel, Jay Radel, and Kristin (Darwish) Harper; 23 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Blunt of Shell Rock.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Vernon Hunter, Mervin Hunter and Clyde in infancy; a sister, Helen, in childhood; and one son-in-law, Walter E. Kahler.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Waverly. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Gertrude I. Flugge

Gertrude I. Flugge, 83, of Charles City, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, at Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Gertrude Flugge will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor David Werges of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitation will continue Thursday an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Gertrude Irene Hull Flugge was born Sept. 15, 1922, at Ackley, the daughter of Benjamin and Clara (Hull). She attended Charles City High School. On Sept. 25, 1949, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Flugge at Austin, Minn.

Gertrude was a waitress all of her life working at many different restaurants in Charles City. She started working at the Point Cafe, and was also employed at the Highway Cafe, Ray’s Family Kitchen for 12 years and was club manager of the V.F.W until retirement. She was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., V.F.W. Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and Women’s Bowling Association. Her interests included Bowling 600 Club (she was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame), gardening and working outside and listening to country music, especially her son’s band, The Country Kings.

Living family members include her husband Lloyd Flugge of Charles City; three sons, Darrell (Joy) Adelmund of Waterloo, Danny (Sharron) Adelmund of Round Lake, Ill. and Daniel Flugge of Clear Lake; two sisters, Betty Chamberlin of Euless, Texas, and Donna Hulion of Charles City; one brother, Clayton (Linda) Hull of Charles City; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Joe, Ronald and Wyane Hull; one sister, Dorothy Bishop; and two grandchildren, Troy and Scott Adelmund.

Leroy Draheim

Leroy Draheim, 58, of Ionia, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, following a brief illness.

Funeral services for Leroy Draheim will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Sr. Jennifer Rausch, pastoral assistant at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar View Cemetery in Chickasaw County.

Leroy Edward Draheim was born Aug. 26, 1947, at Charles City, the son of John and Mildred (Kilby) Draheim. He graduated from Charles City High School. Leroy was former owner of the original Bassett Bar.

Living family members include a sister, Maida Wiegmann of Charles City; and five nieces and nephews, Denise (Jerry) Conway of Austin, Texas, Jeff Lore of Bellville, Texas, Bobby (Pam) Lore of Bassett, Valerie (Mark) Tedder of Buda, Texas, and David Lore of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a half-sister, Phyllis Butler of Shedd, Ore.

Paul B. Nixt

GREENE — A Funeral Mass for Paul B. Nixt, 80, of Greene, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Greene, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene. There will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m., followed by a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

Paul B. Nixt was born April 18, 1926, in Union Township of Floyd County, a son of Louis Francis and Anna (Marzen) Nixt, and died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

He received his education in the Marble Rock public schools, graduating in 1944. As a young man, he worked on the family farm. On Aug. 29, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Scofield in Dubuque. The following spring, Paul and Mary Lou started farming on their own, six miles east of Greene, where they remained until 1983 when they moved into town. While living on the farm, Paul had a habit of giving all the animals they had a nickname. In 1968, they established Nixt’s Candle Shop, which made and distributed candles throughout the United States. Mary Lou died on Oct. 23, 1985. Paul continued to operate the business until his retirement in 1989.

Living family members include two daughters, Sharon (John) Daub of Mason City and their children — Lois Spieker (mother of Joshua, Amanda and Katie), Julie (Steve) Knecht (parents of Stephanie, William, Cassandra, Tony and Kayleen), John (Jene’) Daub (parents of Brandi Anne and J.T.), Laura Norton (mother of C.J., Erica, Cody, Zach), Chirs (Thad) Evans (parents of Mary and Becca), and Theresa “Terry” Schrage of Bristow and her children — Andrea (Jason) Webster (parents of Miranda), Doug Schrage (father of Caden) and Samantha Schrage; four sons, George (Susan) Nixt of Greene and their children — Tricia (Tom) Johnson, Becky Nixt (mother of Jacob), Eric (Jenni) Nixt, Tyler (Stephanie) Nixt, Jared Nixt, Stephen (Geri) Nixt and their daughter Jessica of St. Michael, Minn., James (Laura Simpkins) Nixt and his daughter Anna Nixt; and Michael (Ruth) Nixt and their children — Matthew Nixt, Joan Nixt, David (Melissa) Nixt, Darrel Nixt, Michael Nixt Jr.; and one brother, Andrew (Marcella) Nixt of Greene.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou; two children, Mark Nixt and Lois Nixt; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; son-in-law Brad Schrage; his parents; two sisters, Mary Schoenfeldt and Norma Rottinghaus; and one brother, Cletus George Nixt.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Greene Volunteer Ambulance Fund in memory of Paul B. Nixt.

Doris Lubbert

Doris Olive (Crooks) Lubbert was born Nov. 21, 1918, near Bruce, Wis., the daughter of Harry and Mae (Havig) Crooks. She graduated in 1935 from the Nashua High School. On Sept. 5, 1947, she was united in marriage to August “Gus” Lubbert at Nashua. They farmed near Floyd all of their lives. Doris worked for attorney John Cronin at Nashua and at Walsh Manufacturing Company for 10 years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church at Floyd.

Her interests included sewing, quilting, gardening, crocheting and playing piano. Doris always looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Living family members include four children, Inez (Duane) Dirks of Cedar Rapids, Maxine (Doug) Kehret of Waterloo, Roger Lubbert of Floyd and Charlene (special friend Doug Adams) Mostek of Osage; seven grandchildren, Holly and Mitchell Warren, William and Jennifer Kehret and Stephanie, Samantha and Joshua Mostek; four great-grandchildren, Dylan, Sarah, Eli and Tommy; and a brother, Merle (Jane) Crooks of Nashua.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Donald Crooks; three brothers that died in infancy, Raymond, Eldon, and Milton Crooks; and two sisters, Lucille Kolesar and Marian Litterer.

Evelyn Krall

Evelyn Krall, 84, of Charles City, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Evelyn Krall will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Sunday with a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service being held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Evelyn Leola (White) Krall was born Sept. 5, 1921, at Waverly, the daughter of Charles and Maude O’Rourke. She graduated from the Nashua High School in 1938. On Oct. 18, 1947, she was united in marriage to Edward Krall at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. In her early years Evelyn worked for the Oliver Corporation and the phone company in Nashua. After their marriage they operated Krall’s Caf/ in Colwell until moving to Charles City in 1964. At that time she worked in the Red Owl Bakery and then at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home. Evelyn enjoyed cooking, gardening and entertaining family and friends. She will be remembered for her caring attitude which extended to both family and friends. Family was important to Evelyn and she always looked forward to those times when they could be together.

Living family members include her husband Edward Krall of Charles City; three children, Karel (Jeff) Brengman of Rochester, Minn., Janis (Bob) Steblay of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Donald Krall of Charles City; three grandchildren, Ryan, Kiersten and Marissa; two great grandchildren Julian and Vivica; and several nieces and nephews.

Martin W. Schmitt

Martin W. Schmitt, 69, of Charles City, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Martin Schmitt will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Martin William Schmitt was born Oct. 25, 1936, at Passaic, N.J., the son of William and Ruth (Gutzwiller) Schmitt. He graduated from St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, N.J. and Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. On Sept. 10, 1966 he was united in marriage to Therese Wolpensinger at St. Kevin’s Church in Flushing, N.Y.

Martin was a microbiologist employed with various pharmaceutical laboratories including Fromm and Solvay. For the last five years, he was seasonally employed by Sherman Nursery.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and served on the I.C. School Board and the Parish Council. He was a BeFriender, a member of the Knights of Columbus and participated in Renew and Marriage Encounter. Martin served on the Charles City Library Board and was active in the Democratic Party. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping, canoeing, hiking, biking, cross country skiing and gardening. His other interests included spending time with his family, traveling, reading, listening to classical music and staying abreast of current events.

Martin was a loving husband and devoted father. Living family members include his wife, Therese (Terry) Schmitt of Charles City; six children, Joe Schmitt of Chicago, Tom (Jennifer) Schmitt of Crystal, Minn., Peter (Ardis) Schmitt of Famington Hills, Mich., Susan (John) Reyna of Kansas City, Mo., Catherine (Paul) Brookes of London, England, and Laura Schmitt of Iowa City; three step-grandchildren, Jason, Aaron, Lauren; his mother, Ruth Schmitt of Whiting, N.J.; two sisters, Dorothea Schmitt of Washington, Maine, and Elizabeth Griffin of Bowie, Md.; a brother-in-law, Peter (Barbara) Wolpensinger of Deer Park, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, to honor the memory of Pauline M. (Kobliska) Nockels, formerly of Charles City, who died May 10, 2006 in Scottsdale, Ariz.,

James Lacour

PASADENA, Calif. — James Lacour, 84, of Pasadena, Calif. and formerly of Charles City, passed away Aug. 12, 2006.

He was born on April 18, 1922, in Ulster Township of Floyd County, the son of Edward and Anna (Noss) Lacour. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

On June 20, 1945, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Beckwith. They moved to Albuquerque, N.M., and later to Pasadena, where James continued his teaching career. He was a professor of English at the Ambassador College.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Walter and Floyd; and a sister, Dorothy L. Hirsch.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Pasadena; a sister and brother-in-law, Lois and De Von Thorsen of Charles City; three nieces, Dr. Norma Hirsch, Barbara (Lacour) Means, Shirley (Lacour) Richtsmeier; and three nephews, Larry Hirsch, Richard Lacour and Dennis Thorsen.


Velma Mae Shrader

WATERLOO — Velma Mae Shrader, 95, of Waterloo, died on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

Graveside Memorial Services will be on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Last Supper section at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Following services, the family will receive friends at 125 Faber Rd., Waterloo.

Velma was born on May 11, 1911, in Burt, the daughter of Bert and Mabel Murray DeLapp. She married Howard Otterman on Dec. 21, 1942, in St. Joseph, Mo. He preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1973. She married Wayne Shrader on May 11, 1982, and he preceded her in death also. Velma had worked for Rath Packing Company from 1926 until 1969.

Survivors include three daughters, Glennis Otterman of Waterloo, Gayle (Keith) McInroy of Charles City and Kristi (Tim) Engstrom of Waterloo; one stepdaughter, Barbara Koger of Waterloo; six grandchildren, Julie (Daryl) Jordan, Kevin Good, Wade and Ward McInroy, Kaci (Carl) Yant and Kara (Jeff) Nelson; and six great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by parents; first and second husbands; and three brothers, Floyd, Carl and Harold DeLapp.

Jonna ‘Chris’ Thompson

SIOUX CITY — Jonna Christine "Chris" Thompson, 54 — mother, sister, wife, friend, aunt and Nana — of Sioux City lost her battle with cancer on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at her home.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at First United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with Rev. Don Wood officiating. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is handling arrangements. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Chris was born Feb. 23, 1952,, in Estherville, the daughter of Leo Edward and Harriet (Jespersen) Gray. She married Steve Saunders on Sept. 4, 1971, in Spencer. She later married Tom Kastner on Dec. 25, 1978, in Sioux City. He died Dec. 5, 1980. Since Oct. 28, 1983, she has been married to Michael Thompson.

Chris grew up in Spencer and lived the majority of her life in Sioux City. She was employed by Westmoor Music, Security National Bank, Walker Shoes and, most recently, by J.C. Penney. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, a piano teacher, an avid gardener and full-time Nana.

Living family members include: her husband Mike Thompson; two daughters and their husbands — Heather and Alex Fox of Decatur, Ill. and Courtney and Mark Akerberg of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Makenzie and Ethan Fox, Abby and Anna Akerberg; her mother Harriet Gray of Spencer; a sister and her husband, Cathy and Gene Hall of Charles City; along with a brother and his wife, Joel and Penny Gray of Charles City.

Chris was preceded in death by her father Leo Gray and a brother, Craig Gray.
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Makenzie N. Fox, Ethan A. Fox, Abbigail R. Akerberg and Annabelle C. Akerberg.

Memorials may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.

PASADENA, Calif. — James Lacour, 84, of Pasadena, Calif. and formerly of Charles City, passed away Aug. 12, 2006.

Ralph ‘Putz’ Nicholas Mishak

ALTA VISTA — Ralph ‘Putz’ Nicholas Mishak, 77, of Manly, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista, with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista with military honors conducted by members of the Alta Vista VFW Paul Johann Post 4069. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday with a public scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. NE, Mason City. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista.

Ralph “Putz” Nicholas Mishak was born on Dec. 6, 1928, in Alta Vista, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Thul) Mishak. He graduated from St. Williams High School in the Class of 1947. After completing his schooling, he started working for Otto Lentz Construction Company in Alta Vista until his induction into the U.S. Army in 1950, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was also stationed in West Germany with an engineer battalion until his honorable discharge in 1953.

After his honorable discharge, Ralph operated the Skelly Service station in Mason City from 1958 until 1959, and also worked various jobs around the Mason City and Clear Lake area. In 1970, he operated a camp ground resort at Noel, Mo. In 1973, he sold the resort to his partner. Ralph traveled throughout Iowa, installing chalk and tact board in new schools. In 1975, he moved to Lake Cornellia. In 1997, he moved to Mason City, and lived at The Meadows before moving to Three Links apartments and then to the Sunset View apartments in Manly, before lastly moving to Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista on Aug. 16.

Ralph enjoyed collecting antique cars and driving them in parades, dancing, socializing with friends and singing. His great love and enjoyment was being with family.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, and a lifetime member of Alta Vista VFW Paul Johann Post 4069.

She helped her husband on the farm in Dallas County until they moved to Charles City, where she worked for the Oliver Corporation during WWII. She later was a meat cutter at Trowbridges Super Market in Charles City. She owned and operated the Charles City Nursing Home for a number of years, owned and operated Maid Rite Caf/. After she retired, she moved to Mt. Pleasant to make her home. She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by her children — Joanne Thornton and her husband Larry of Mt. Pleasant, Gary Hawbaker and his wife Sandra of Boise, Idaho, Pamela Rausch and her husband Thomas of Newton and Diana Hawbaker of Wellington, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Bob Mabie was born Aug. 9, 1920, at Colfax, the son of Oliver and Olampe (Perrier) Mabie. He graduated from Marshalltown High School and attended Grinnell College. During World War II, Bob was a pilot in the Army Air Corps. Stationed in England, he was a highly-decorated, proud member of the Fourth Fighter Group — the highest scoring U.S. Air Force group in World War II. Captain Mabie flew 82 missions in his P-51 Mustang.

He was united in marriage to Catherine Merrill on June 30, 1946, in Marshalltown. He was employed at Mills-Helmers for more than 20 years and was a building inspector for Charles City from 1970 until retirement. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Midi’s group and the United Methodist Men. Bob was active in the American Legion Post 174 and Noon Kiwanis. His interests included golfing, hunting, fishing, traveling, playing cards, bike riding and helping others. He will be remembered as a good friend, loving husband and remarkable father and grandfather.

Living family members include three daughters; Deborah Menke of Charles City, Linda (Russell) Wolff of Charles City and Ann (Michael) McCartney of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Rachel, Michael, Thomas, Eric, Alisha and Charles; three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Emma and Jake; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Catherine; one brother, Raymond Mabie; and a sister, Edith Snyder.

Virginia (Hampton) Baltzell

Virginia (Hampton) Baltzell, 95, was born Dec. 1, 1910 in Milton, Ky. to Nanny and Harvey Hampton. She graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor of Science Associate degree in medical technology and radiology and worked at Louisville Children’s Hospital, where she met and married Winston C. Baltzell, M.D. in 1938.

Virginia had three children: James Winston Baltzell, Robert Lawrence Baltzell and Nancy Baltzell Walters.

Her son Robert, husband Winston and parents preceded her in death. Her son Jim of Minnetonka, Minn. and his wife Karin; and daughter Nancy of Iowa Falls and her husband Jim; and four grandchildren, Mike Walters, Phil Walters, Josh Baltzell and Kelly Baltzell, survive her.

Virginia often said, “Getting old is the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

She died peacefully in her sleep on July 12, 2006, after several months of complications related to surgery.

She was an active member of PEO, Leesburg, Fla. Hospital Auxiliary and Methodist church. She was especially proud to be a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and studied her family’s genealogy assiduously. Virginia played duplicate bridge and card games when she wasn’t teaching water aerobics.
Memorials in her name may be sent to the Boys and Girls Club of Leesburg, Leesburg Hospice or the PEO Education Fund of Leesburg.

Virginia will be cremated and her cremains buried next to her beloved husband in Charles City, where they had both lived and worked for more than 30 years. A private family graveside service will be held Sept. 9

Floyd Raymond Fiser was born Feb. 3, 1938, at St. Paul, Minn., the son of Ralph and Margaret (Wilcox) Fiser. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1957. In 1956, as a junior in high school, Floyd joined the Iowa National Guard. On Jan. 23, 1962 he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Olson at Lyle, Minn.

Floyd retired as a Master Sergeant from the Iowa National Guard in 1979, serving 23 years. During his working career, he was employed at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company as a tool and die maker for 26 years and at GMT in Waverly as a supervisor, and then as an estimator, for 18 years.

Floyd enjoyed playing his guitar for his own enjoyment. Bowling was also very important to him and he attended the State Tournament on 15 different occasions. He also spent lots of time with his dogs, playing fetch and frisbee. His biggest thrill was watching his grandchildren compete in their activities of wrestling, football, soccer, softball, baseball, volleyball, basketball, dance, band, drama, track and swimming.

Living family members include his wife Mary Jane Fiser of Charles City; five children, Steve (Jackie) Fiser of Louisville, Ky., Julie (Darien) Uetz of Charles City, William “Bill” (Larina) Fiser of Charles City, Kim (Todd) Poshusta of Shakopee, Minn., and Mark Fiser of Charles City; 16 grandchildren; and two sisters, Donna Debban of Osage and Mary Paulus of Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, LeRoy, Lloyd “Stub,” Robert and Roger Fiser; one sister, Alice Peterson; and two infant siblings, Donald and Sherly.

Dorothy May Thompson Ward was born March 9, 1920, at Charles City, the daughter of John and Ina (White) Thompson. She graduated from East High School and Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing, both at Des Moines. Dorothy served in the Army Nurse Corp from 1942 to 1945. During that time, she served with the 125th General Hospital in the Philippines. Dorothy worked at the California Lutheran Hospital in Los Angeles from 1945 to 1946. On March 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert Ward at Ames. Over the years, she worked in the medical field at Ames, Frederick, Md., and Ft. Dodge.

In the mid 1980s, she moved to Charles City. Dorothy was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion, Heritage Club and was a 50-year member of the Wa Tan ye Club, where she served in various offices. Her hobbies included needlework and crossword puzzles, reading and traveling. Dorothy will always be remembered as a person that thoroughly enjoyed life.

Living family members include a sister, Virginia Thompson of Charles City; four brothers, John Thompson of St. Paul, Minn., Robert (Darlene) Thompson of Jesup, Gordon (Janice) Thompson of Mason City and Douglas Thompson of Berea, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Edward John Logan was born Feb. 7, 1942, in Charles City to James M. and Frances E. (Roethler) Logan. He was the only son and the youngest of five children born to his parents.
"Ed” or “Johnny," as he was fondly known by his family and friends, received his education at Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Charles City and graduated from high school among the Class of 1961.

On Jan. 22, 1966, Ed was united in marriage to Linda Lucille Mincks at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. They became the proud parents of three sons. Ed always placed his family and his sisters as his highest priority.

Ed was employed at Oliver-White Farm for numerous years and later became a machinist at Diversified Manufacturing in Charles City, where he was currently working for approximately the past 10 years.
Some of Ed’s interests and hobbies included playing the guitar and singing, listening to all kinds of music (but he was especially fond of Johnny Cash), tending to his yard work, dining out with Linda, spending time creating and completing wonderful woodworking projects and looking forward to talking with both of his sisters every evening on the telephone.

Ed was devoted to his faith and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. His family recalls that he was a bit mischievous throughout his life. He liked to tease, but he was a very caring and loveable man. Ed was a "happy go lucky guy." His sons claim that their dad was always there for them, that he was easy to talk to and he was always ready to help them in anyway, especially with good advice.

Ed will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Linda Logan; his two sons, Daniel Logan and Patrick Logan; his two sisters, Mary Mehmen and Evelyn Houdek, all of Charles City; his two brother-in-laws, Mike Mincks of Webster City and Lanny (Gloria) Mincks of Charles City; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Her interests included playing with kittens, going to movies, listening to music and attending family gatherings. She always appreciated having her great nieces as her caregivers. Beverly looked forward to visiting with her many friends especially Judy Thorson, Chuck LaMaster, Margaret Walsh and Arnold Haller.

Marie Thoreson Elliott Haase was born May 27, 1911, near Ruthven, the daughter of Ole and Torena (Saalsa) Thoreson. She graduated from Graettinger High School and from Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, with a teaching degree. On June 30, 1943, she was united in marriage to Russell Elliott. Russell died on March 3, 1980. Marie married John Haase in 1986. John died in January of 1998.

During her early teaching career Marie taught in Lost Island Township and in the Milford and Vinton communities. In 1950, she opened a preschool program in Charles City, where she served as teacher and director until 1960. In 1961, she joined the Charles City public school system, serving as a second-grade school teacher at the Central Elementary school and later Washington Elementary. After retiring from Charles City public schools in 1975, Marie launched the Jack and Jill preschool program for St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She continued there as director until 1989. She then did volunteer work at Lincoln Elementary School.

Marie was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she served as past president of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Other memberships in which she served in leadership capacities include Pythian Sisters, American Legion Auxiliary, Floyd County American Legion Auxiliary, Charles City Community Education Association, Charles City Women’s Club, United Way, City Improvement Association and Alpha Delta Kappa Education Sorority. She also volunteered at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Treasure Chest and St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1960, Marie was awarded Woman of the Year by the Charles City Chamber of Commerce.
Her interests included church activities, playing bridge and golf, reading, ceramics, needlework and bicycling. Marie’s goal was always to keep active in all facets of society.

Living family members include a son, Thomas and his wife Virginia Elliott of Fargo, N.D.; a daughter, Sheryl Elliott and her husband Ken Robinson of Washington D.C.; four grandchildren — David, Nathan and Mark Elliott, and Hilary Chandler; seven great- grandchildren, Shaina, Jordan, Kelsie, McKenzie and Savannah Elliott and Desmond and Quincy Chandler; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a grandson, Michael Elliott; a great-granddaughter, Karlie Elliott; three sisters, Thelma Knudson, Thyra Peterson and Alys Carter; and two brothers, Norman and Haaken Thoreson.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Word has come of the passing of Lowell Winship Lapham, M.D., formerly of Charles City, on Feb. 8, 2006, in the Cleveland Clinic at the age of 83.

Dr. Lapham had been residing at the Kendal retirement community in Oberlin, Ohio. Born in New Hampton on March 20, 1922, he grew up in Charles City.

Marvlyn Moltz

Marvlyn Moltz, 84, of Charles City, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at her home.

Funeral services for Marvlyn Moltz will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Russ Grill of Denver Baptist Church in Denver will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitation will continue Thursday an hour prior to the service.

Marvlyn Grace Chestek Moltz was born Jan. 3, 1922, the daughter of Lee and Florence (Tibbetts) Chestek at Bassett. She attended the Charles City High School. On April 7, 1939, she was united in marriage to Vincent F. “Bud” Moltz at Decorah. Marvlyn was a homemaker, bookkeeper for her husband’s business Moltz Construction for more than 30 years and was a Hospital Auxiliary volunteer for more than 50 years. Her interests included playing the piano, traveling and attending the grandchildrens’ activities. Marvlyn’s greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Living family members include three children, V. Paul (Rohnda) Moltz of Buena Vista, Colo., Judy (Ron) Sylvester of Denver and Galen (Linda) Moltz of Salida, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Brian, Kim, Megan, Eric, Nick, Melissa, Tom, Emily and Garrod; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1997; three brothers, Leland, Robert, and Bud Chestek; and one sister, Thelma Helgen.

W. Stanley Wilson

W. Stanley Wilson, 55, of Charles City, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, near Floyd.

Memorial services for Stan Wilson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service.

William Stanley Wilson was born June 13, 1951, in Charles City, the son of Bill and Frances (Temple) Wilson. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1969 and attended college at North Iowa Community College and Northeastern Oklahoma. On July 7, 1970, he was united in marriage to Diana Walker in Rudd. They lived in Charles City for a number of years, moved to Oklahoma and returned to Charles City in 1990. Stan had been a truck driver, proprietor of Stan’s Auto Body Shop and Stan’s Computers and managed Dale’s Salvage Yard. He was currently employed at Fort Dodge Animal Health and had also recently purchased the Floyd crossing elevator, with plans of opening an auto body shop.

He was a past member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. Stan’s hobbies included farming with his cousin Doug Temple, working with computers and restoring classic Mopars. He will always be remembered as a “Jack of all trades.”

Living family members include his wife Diana of Charles City; three sons, Shawn Wilson of Tarpon Springs, Fla., an investigator with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Calvin Wilson of Charles City, a family crisis intervention worker with Lutheran Services in Iowa, and Corey Wilson of Charles City, employed with Winnebago Industries; his father, Bill Wilson of Floyd; his mother, Frances Wilson of Tulsa, Okla.; four brothers, Rodney (Susan) Wilson of Miami, Okla., Randy Wilson of Floyd, Kevin (Annette) Wilson of Shell Rock and Brian (Paula) Wilson of Tulsa; two sisters, Sherry (Bill) Prewett of Miami and Kathy Wilson of Vancouver, Wash.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Patricia Ann Geno

HARPERS FERRY — Patricia Ann Geno, 67, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic in Iowa City. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry.

Patricia was born Aug, 11, 1939, in Iowa City to Edward and Lucy (Fredrick) Farrell. She graduated from Volga High School.

Patricia was united in marriage to Robert Geno on July 6, 1973. She was a bank teller for many years. Patricia and Bob owned and operated a riverfront resort in Harpers Ferry. She loved spending time with relatives and friends.

Survivors include four children, Joseph E. (Cheri) Madlom of Austin, Texas, Julie (Wes) Heying and Scott (Lynn) Geno, both of Monona, and Lee (Dee) Geno of Marengo; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward Farrell of Strawberry Point; one sister, Lucille Kozul of Troy, Ohio; a dear sister-in-law, Almina Farrell of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bob on June 28, 2005; one son, Mark, in infancy; two brothers, John and Joe Farrell; and five sisters, Mildred, Mae, Marian, Calista and Irene.


Viola M. ‘Vi’ Webster

Viola M. (Vi) Webster, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, of natural causes at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

She was born on July 13, 1925, in Mora, Minn., the daughter of John R. and Stella M. Murdock Montgomery. The family moved to Charles City when Vi was 4 and she lived there the rest of her life. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1943.

When her children were young, Vi was a stay-at-home mom. She volunteered as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den leader and Sunday school teacher, and was active at Camp Christie. Vi was a member of First Congregational Church. She joined the JC Wives during their first membership drive. Vi enjoyed being in and learning about nature. Her lifelong interests in vegetable and flower gardening eventually led to her designation as an Iowa Master Gardener. Vi was also an avid cat lover. But most of all, she was family-oriented and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and hearing about their lives.

Vi worked as a supervisor at Comprehensive Systems, Inc., and retired after 20 years of dedicated service. During those years, she continued her education through classes in child development and health care provision. She also served as the coordinator of the Y’s Guys after-school program at the local YMCA for four years. Vi became a resident of Salsbury Baptist Home in 1999 due to health-related needs. Prior to 1999, she lived at 206 Patten Ave. for more than 40 years.

Vi is survived by two daughters: Carol (Don) Ulwelling of Rose Creek, Minn., and Mary Jane (Doug) Madsen of South Lyon, Mich. There are seven grandchildren, including Julie (Jeff) Hendrikson, Patty Ulwelling, Lori (Jamie) Beck, Josh (Tammy) Madsen, Chris Madsen, Nick (Erin) Webster and Cassie (Colby) Sheda. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Adam Hendrikson, Derek Hendrikson, Isabel Beck, Isaac Beck, Jack Beck, Olivia Madsen and Cade Sheda.

Vi was preceded in death by her parents, a son, David John Webster; a grandson, Richard John Ulwelling; her sister, Alice Lusk; and her brother, Noel Montgomery.
Cremation took place in care of Fullerton Funeral Home. To honor Vi’s wishes, no public visitation is planned and a private memorial service will be held in her honor at a later date, with Pastor Phil Corr facilitating.

Magdalene ‘Peggy’ Green

RICHARDSON, Texas — Magdalene “Peggy” Green, of Richardson, Texas, and formerly of Charles City, died Aug. 9, 2006.

She was the daughter of Clifford and Merle Bucknell and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1939.

Peggy is survived by her son and three daughters and their families; and by her sister, Joan Buell of Iowa City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant grandson, her sister Lola Curl and her husband John.
