ELDORA—Debbie S. Collins, 54, of Eldora, died from natural causes on Sunday, October 3, 2010, at the Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, October 8, at the First Baptist Church in Eldora, with Pastor Roger Crawford officiating. Visitation is from 5-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Following cremation, interment will follow at a later date in the Eldora City Cemetery.

Jerry Lee Ratcliff

HAMPTON—Jerry Lee Ratcliff, 65, of Hampton, died on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at the Belle Plaine Nursing & Rehab Center in Belle Plaine.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 9, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Maynes Grove Cemetery.

Jerry Lee Ratcliff was born on June 14, 1945, in Iowa Falls, to Burl and Frances (Burns) Ratcliff. He attended school in Geneva and worked on the family farm. Jerry enjoyed tractors, his dog, his donkey, fishing and also square dancing.

Jerry is survived by three sisters, Lois Bennett of Alden, Louise Montgomery of Iowa Falls, and Linda Versluys of Doe Run, Mo.; and a brother, Tim Ratcliff of Alden.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Aunt Ruth; and a brother-in-law, Ken Versluys.

Pearl Marie Mulford

HAMPTON—Pearl Marie Mulford, 85, of Hampton, passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, October 9, at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Hampton, with the Rev. Rocky Woolery officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.

Marie Mulford was born on February 22, 1925, to Karl and Laura Newton Jensen in Hampton. She was united in marriage to Jacob Mulford on June 26, 1942, at the Bethany Missouri Courthouse. He died in 2004. Marie worked as a bookkeeper for 48 years for the family business called M & J Construction.

She really loved taking care of dogs. Marie was a member of the Church of Christ in Hampton, the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge.

Marie is survived by one daughter, Pamela Kay Brown of Hampton; four sons, Raymond Michael (Terri) of Clear Lake, Jacob Leslie (Claire) of Flint, Texas, Nicholas Karl (Ranae) of Hampton, and Bradley Gene (Kim) of Sheffield; one sister, Arlene (L.E.) Brown of Benson, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; an infant son, Gary Lee; brother, Russell Jensen; granddaughter, Tamera Brown; and great-granddaughter, Mikyla Mulford.

ROYAL CENTER, Ind.—Robert L. Brandt, 74, of Royal Center, Ind., formally of Hubbard and Iowa Falls, passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Woodbridge Health Campus in Logansport, Ind.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 8, at Gundrum Funeral Home in Logansport, with Dr. Horace Smith officiating. Burial was in Kistler Cemetery, Royal Center.

Marlys Ruth Pralle

HAMPTON—Marlys Ruth Pralle, 78, of Hampton, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 11, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Karl Bollhagen and Vicar Roy Berquist officiating. Burial took place in the Hampton Cemetery. The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton was in charge of the arrangements.

Marlys was born July 12, 1932, in Dumont, to John and Minnie (Nolte) Tjabring. She graduated from the Dumont High School. She was united in marriage to Charles "Chuck" Pralle on June 10, 1950, in Dumont. Marlys was a housewife, while also working beside her husband on the farm and around the yard.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton. Marlys enjoyed gardening, dancing, listening to Willie Nelson and helping her family and friends. Being a grandmother was fun and very special to her. She was also very patriotic.

Marlys is survived by her daughters, Diana and husband Siegbert Kling of Rochester, Minn., Cindy and husband Russell Stigler of Ames, Kim and husband David Powell of Ankeny and Jane and husband David Nichols of Ankeny; grandchildren, Luke Stigler, Lindsey Haagensen, Nicole Powell, Joseph Stigler, Myka Nichols, Logan Nichols and Carson Powell; great-grandchildren, Tyson and Alivia Haagensen; and sisters, Dolores Richtsmeier, Lavon Dubberke and Junice (Dan) Munson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Minnie; husband, Chuck; and grandson, Tyson Kling.

David George Harty

CLIVE—David George Harty, 75, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2010.

A celebration of his life was held Monday, October 11, at Lutheran Church of Hope, West Des Moines, Iowa.

David was born on December 29, 1934, in Mason City. He graduated in 1953 from the Iowa Falls High School and then attended Ellsworth Community College from 1953-55, lettering in baseball. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1957 where he lettered two years in wrestling. He married his wife Kay in 1959. He received his master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1961 and did further graduate work at Iowa State. He taught science and coached wrestling in Postville and taught, coached and was a middle school administrator in Eagle Grove. He was the assistant executive secretary to the Iowa High School Athletic Association from 1970-2005. In retirement he returned to the classroom, supervising student teachers for Iowa State. He was a member of the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame and was recognized by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport.

David's passions were spending time with family and friends at Lake Okoboji; hunting, fishing and golfing with his family; and following Iowa State athletics.

The family would like to thank the many doctors and care providers at Iowa Methodist Hospital and the pastoral care staffs at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines and the First Lutheran Church of West Okoboji for their dedication and support.

David is survived by his wife, Kay; daughter, Laura (Charles) Celli of Southlake, Texas; son, Jeff (Cathy) of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Alexandria Celli of Southlake, Texas and David and Allison Harty of West Des Moines; siblings, Evelyn King of Iowa Falls, Darlene Roozen of Iowa Falls, Rick Harty of Mason City, Pat Evans of Torrance, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Lutheran Church of Hope, West Des Moines or to First Lutheran Church, West Okoboji, Iowa.

Janet Parker

DES MOINES—Janet Eileen Blake Parker, 87, died at home on Saturday, October 9, 2010. She suffered from Alzheimer's and died of cancer.

She was born on November 26, 1922, in Council Bluffs to Eileen Mahoney Blake and Byron Bradbury Blake. She was the second of three girls. Janet outlived both her sisters, Mary and Barbara. Dr. Loran Parker, her husband of 67 years, survives her.

Janet grew up in Des Moines, attending Perkins and Rice Elementary Schools, Callanan Junior High, and Roosevelt High School. She married Loran Parker in 1943 while they were both students at the University of Iowa, she in English, and he in medicine. Janet graduated from the University of Iowa in 1944, and was an ardent U of I fan the rest of her life.

She lived in Iowa Falls from, 1948-71 where she raised four children and ran the household. In 1971 she moved to Des Moines when Loran became director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Broadlawns Hospital. She and her husband have resided in the same home in Des Moines ever since.

Janet was always her own person. She baked bread, grew a garden, and rode a bike around town when it wasn't fashionable, and when it was fashionable. She played tennis, golf and bridge and loved to swim. She was an avid reader. She adored her dogs. She traveled the world with her husband.

She was involved in many social justice issues as a volunteer. Among the organizations she served were Children and Families of Iowa, Child Guidance Center, Eyerly-Ball Mental Health Center, Planned Parenthood, Salvation Army, Polk County Mental Health, Social Action Committee at Plymouth Congregational Church, Witness for Peace, and Iowa Civil Rights Commission. She was a tutor for persons learning English as a second language. She priced books for the Planned Parenthood Bookworks for many years. She also served on the boards of the Iowa State Library, Des Moines Symphony, DMACC Humanities Advisory Board and RSVP. In 1999 she was honored for her volunteer service when the YWCA named her a Woman of Distinction.

Janet was involved in Democratic politics for many years. She was the state treasurer for two presidential candidates, a national delegate representing the Iowa Democratic Party in 1976 and once ran for the Iowa House of Representatives.

Janet is survived by her children, Lorie Parker of Seattle, Wash., Theresa Parker of Coquille, Ore., Blake Parker (Terri) of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands and Byron Parker of Mystic, Iowa; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Janet donated her body to the University of Iowa medical school. At her request there will be no services. She asked that any memorials be given either to The Des Moines Public Library Foundation, Des Moines or to Barlow Memorial Library (Iowa Falls Public Library), Iowa Falls.

Velma Ruth Martin Brown

IOWA FALLS—Velma Ruth Brown, 85, of Iowa Falls, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2010, at the Muse-Norris Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, October 12, at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls. Private family burial was in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls or to Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City. The Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.

Velma Ruth Martin was born March 25, 1925, at Albert City, the daughter of Elmer Grant and Arlo (Curdy) Martin. She graduated from Laurens Community Schools with the class of 1942. She attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a B.A. in education in 1945. On January 23, 1947, Thelma was united in marriage to Henry Lewis Brown at Eldora. To this union four children were born, Martin, Kent, Louise and Steve. Velma taught school in Iowa Falls, and was a member of PEO, Parchment Club, Eastern Star, Ellsworth Hospital Auxiliary, Bridge Clubs and Community Theatre. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, and enjoyed working in the circles.

Velma Brown is survived by her children, Martin (Kate) Brown of Olympia, Wash., Kent (Mat) Brown of Margaretville, N.Y., Louise (Bobby) Campina of Phoenix, Ariz., and Steve (Bridget) Brown of Indianapolis, Ind.; and six grandchildren, Richelle Brown of Indianapolis, Sam Brown of San Diego, Calif., Mae Brown of Seattle, Wash., Allison Campina of Phoenix, Henry Brown of Indianapolis, and Lucy Brown of Indianapolis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Brown.

Captain M. Duane Spieker
April 8, 1941-October 11, 2010

ACKLEY—Captain M. Duane Spieker, 69, of Titusville, Fla., and formerly of Ackley, died Monday, October 11, 2010, at the Shands University of Florida Hospital in Gainesville, Fla.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 16, at the Washington Reformed Church in Ackley, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley is in charge of the arrangements.

Duane Spieker was born on April 8, 1941, at the home of his parents, Fred and Elizabeth Spieker. He attended country and public schools, graduating from Ackley High School in 1959. He attended Ellsworth Jr. College and joined the U.S. Army in October of 1963.

Duane graduated from Officer Candidate School with the rank of second lieutenant and was deployed to the Dominican Republic and Vietnam. Upon his return he completed training as a parachutist and helicopter pilot and was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division with the rank of captain. On his second tour of duty to Vietnam, he was seriously wounded while on a rescue mission, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Gallantry Cross with Silver Star for "heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty." His recovery was long and difficult and left him permanently disabled. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He was granted a medical discharge from the Army in 1972.

In 1983 he married Elsa Guiot. They lived in Titusville, Fla., until his death on October 11 from liver and kidney disease. Duane's desire is to be remembered as a retired cobra helicopter pilot.

He is survived by his wife; mother Elizabeth; and three sisters, Beverly, Lavola Diane and Arsetta, as well as their husbands, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Verna Elizabeth Ostrem

TUCSON, ARIZ.—Verna Elizabeth Ostrem, 92, died following a very brief illness Oct. 12, 2010, in Tucson, Arizona.

She was born March 18, 1918, in Wyoming, Iowa, to Chris and Abigail Hanold. Verna graduated from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, with a degree in physical education and taught high school in Sac City, West Des Moines and Estherville. She married Lavern "Ossie" Ostrem in 1942. After his death in 1972 she retired from teaching in 1980 and was the head resident at the Alpha Phi Sorority (University of Arizona) for five years.

She is survived by her children, John Ostrem (Cumberland, Wis.), Jan Evans and Jim Ostrem (Tucson, Ariz.), three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services in Tucson are pending. Burial of cremains will be in Estherville.

Mary Boss

WILLIAMS—Mary Boss, 81, of Williams, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the United Methodist Church in Williams. The Surls Funeral Chapel in Williams was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Boss was born on Aug. 10, 1929, in Iowa City, to Gladyce Vey. Mary attended school in Williams. On Aug. 12, 1949, Mary was united in marriage to Wayne Boss at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Mary was part owner and operator at Mary and Wayne's Cafe and Lounge in Williams. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Williams.

Mary is survived by her husband, Wayne of Williams; son Barry (Sheryl) Boss of Sheridan, Wyo.; daughter Carol (Vane) Huggins of Easton, Kan.; four grandchildren, Tiffany (Chad) Reisig, Wade (Judie) Boss, Jess Simpson, and Joshua "JD" Simpson; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor Reisig, Luke Reisig and Carter Boss.

Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Gladyce Vey.

Marian Mae Meinberg
August 18, 1921-October 15, 2010

GRUNDY CENTER—Marian Mae Meinberg was born on August 18, 1921, in Franklin County, the daughter of Dick and Grace (Meyer) Swieter. She attended Grant Center country school. Marian was a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother and great-grandmother.

On Sept. 23, 1939, Marian was united in marriage to Harold Conrad Meinberg at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. During special gospel meetings at Hampton, Marian accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior on Nov. 19, 1941, while reading John 5:24, "He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life." She faithfully gathered with the Christians who met at the Hampton Gospel Hall for many years, then at the Cedar Falls Gospel Hall after moving to Mallard Point, a retirement center, in 2004.

Marian passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center on Oct. 15, 2010, surrounded by her family.

Marian is survived by two daughters, Linda and husband Ken Alberts of Rochelle, Ill., and Marlys Osman of Grundy Center; five grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, Troy (Sue) Alberts and Brandon, Joshua, Tyler and Haeley of Omaha, Neb., Trev (Angela) Alberts and Chase, Ashtynne and Breanna of Omaha, Neb., Tami (Dennis) Palmer and Mason, Taylor, Sierra, Caden and Teagan of Garnavillo, David (Anita) Osman and Elisabeth and Conrad of Ackley, and Deborah (Travis) Brekunitch and Harold and Ella of Grundy Center; a brother, Robert (Shirley) Swieter of Clarion; a sister-in-law, Barbara Swieter of Hampton; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Marian was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1999; an infant son, Gary Lee; a grandson, Todd Alberts; her parents; and brothers, John and wife Agnes, Harvey, Kenneth and wife Bonnie, and Carl and wife Betty.

The family is appreciative of the many acts of kindness shown to them at this time. You are invited to a time of fellowship and lunch at the Gospel Hall before the interment at St. Peter's Cemetery at Geneva.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the Cedar Falls Gospel Hall, with interment at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Cemetery, Geneva. Visitation will be for one hour before service time at the Gospel Hall on Wednesday. The Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Velma H. Arnold

ELDORA—Velma H. Arnold, 97, of Eldora, passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at the Valley View Nursing & Rehab Center in Eldora.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora with Pastor Carlton Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Eldora City Cemetery.

Velma was born in Eldora on Aug. 1, 1913, to her parents, Bert and Vesta Beecher. She grew up in Eldora and attended Eldora High School. As a young woman she worked as a live-in maid for several households until she was united in marriage to her first husband, Harry Hutzel, on Nov. 24, 1931. She also ran the cook shack for the Hardin County road crews while the majority of the first roads were being built in Hardin County. She served three shifts of both breakfast and lunch to the workers.

Velma and Harry welcomed a daughter, Betty Jean, into their family on Jan. 14, 1933. Velma was very helpful to her husband, assisting him on their farm. Harry passed away on June 9, 1976. Velma later married Walter Arnold on Oct. 2, 1982. After several years Walter passed in the spring of 1987.

Music was very important to Velma. She played the harmonica and the accordion. Velma loved to dance. She and Harry even appeared on a television show in the early '50s, that featured square dancing.

Velma is survived by her grandchildren, Judy Hudson, Diana Hudson and Howard Dean (Cindy) Hudson Jr.; eight great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Harry Hutzel and Walter Arnold; daughter, Betty Jean Hudson; two brothers; and one sister.

Roger E. Pencook

RADCLIFFE—Roger E. Pencook, 81, of Radcliffe, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 21, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Radcliffe, with the Rev. Brian McNamara officiating. Burial was at Radcliffe Cemetery. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post #317 of Radcliffe. Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe was in charge of the arrangements.

Roger Earl Pencook was born on March 28, 1929, near Aredale, Butler County, the son of Harold and Pearl (Jones) Pencook. He attended schools in Butler County, graduating from Dumont High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, serving in Denver, Colo., Okinawa and Panama. He was united in marriage to Mary D. Winterfield on May 8, 1954, in the Methodist church in Radcliffe. After serving in the U.S. Air Force he and Mary settled in Radcliffe to raise their three children and farm. Roger worked for the Iowa D.O.T., retiring in 1991.

He and his wife enjoyed their winters in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. His many activities included being a member of the United Methodist Church of Radcliffe, serving on the ADM Council for many years, State Pro of Iowa Amvets, was a member of the American Legion and serving on the Radcliffe City Council.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and one brother, Bill.

He leaves to mourn his three sons, Dorrance of Des Moines, Sidney of Sarasota, Fla., and Frank of California; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Bob; and many nieces and nephews.

PARKERSBURG—Mabel M. Haan, 99, formerly of Parkersburg, died Friday, October 15, 2010, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, from natural causes.

BIG SPRING, TEXAS—Robert Samuel Burkle, 91, of Big Spring, Texas, passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2010, in Scenic Mountain Medical Center, Big Spring, Texas.

A memorial service is pending. Mr. Burkle donated his body to science at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. They will use his body for scientific research and education in the medical fields, after which he will be cremated and interred in St. Peter's Cemetery, at St. Peter's UCC Church near Geneva.

Robert was born in rural Franklin County near Geneva to Charles and Rosa (Laipple) Burkle on Sept. 12, 1919. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter E&R Church near Geneva. Robert attended school in Geneva and graduated from Geneva High School in 1936. He worked with his father and brother on the farm until he enlisted in the Army on Dec. 16, 1943, in Fort Crook, Neb. He served as a clerk and a medic in World War II. He was stationed both in Colorado Springs and the Aleutian Islands near Alaska. Upon returning to Iowa he went into farming near Geneva. He married Alfreda (Richtsmeier) on Sept. 17, 1947, at St. Peter E&R Church. They had one son, Rodney, born Dec. 10, 1958. Alfreda preceded him in death. He married Norma Jean (Hird) on Oct. 16, 1976. Norma preceded him in death. He married Grace (Fredricka Eilers) July 11, 1987. They were later divorced.

Robert farmed near rural Geneva for about 38 years. After retirement from farming he did janitorial work with his wife, Norma, cleaning homes and office buildings for several years. Then he worked as a senior companion in Hudson for a few years. Subsequently he-followed his son to Los Angeles and spent time with him until Rodney's death on Nov. 17, 1994. He worked as a senior companion while in Los Angeles. He move to San Angelo, Texas, in 1999 and continued his work as a senior companion. He met Shirley Davidson, who was his friend and companion. His health required that he move into the VA home in Big Spring, Texas, where he remained until his death.

Robert had a strong faith and belief in God and always attended a church of his choice wherever he lived and was an active participant. Over the years he taught Sunday school classes, sang in the choirs and participated in many other church activities. He loved playing the harmonica, traveling and home photography.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, his son, brothers Carl and Ernest and sister Ruth (Sailer).

He is survived by a brother-in-law, Ralph Richtsmeier; sisters-in-law Betty, Darlene, Barbara, Shirley and Drew Richtsmeier and Anna Burkle; his friend and loving companion, Shirley Davidson; many nieces and nephews; and friends.

ALDEN—Esther A. Krause, 87, of Alden, entered into eternal life Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls with her family by her Krause side.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at the United Methodist Church in Alden. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church. Interment will be in the Alden Cemetery. Vogel Family Funeral Homes in Marshalltown is entrusted with the arrangements.

Esther Avonelle Tjarks was born on Oct. 29, 1922, on the Hilko Tjarks farm west of Alden, the daughter of John and Jeanette (Watt) Tjarks of rural Alden. Esther attended Salem Country School and graduated from the Alden High School in May of 1940. On Sept. 24, 1940, she was united in marriage to William Herbert Krause Jr. at the Lutheran Church Parsonage in Iowa Falls. Esther and Bill farmed their entire lives west of Alden.

Esther was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Alden, serving on many church activity committees. She was an avid "left handed" seamstress, wonderful cook, good singer, and a good listener to everyone close to her. Her home was always open to all her children's and grandchildren's needs. Esther was at Bill's side plowing the ground and any form of work to be done. Esther served on the zoning and adjustment board in Hardin County for many years.

Esther will be missed by her husband of 70 years, William "Bill" Krause, son, Dallas (Lorretta) Krause, daughter, Maribeth (Vance) Swanberg, all of Iowa Falls; grandchildren, Kent (Lori) Krause of Iowa Falls, Kelly Vogel of West Des Moines, Karlton (Joelle) Krause, Kurtis (Deanna) Krause, both of Iowa Falls, Jane (Darrin) Eilertson of Edina, Minn., Jann (Jeff) Friest of Hubbard, and Jill (Sheldon) Clock of Springfield, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Parker Krause, Anthony, Ariadne, Alyssa, Alayna Vogel, Quinton, Kassidy, Jack Krause, Lane, Logan, Evan and Mattie Krause, Michael and Mason Herr, Jonathan, Joseph, Daniel Hansen, and Emma and Elle Eilertson; and many nieces and nephews.

Esther is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Elizabeth Izer and Mary Schager; brother, Leslie Tjarks; great-grandchild, Hunter Krause; and grandson-in-law, Rick Vogel.

Merle W. Lindsey

ELDORA—Merle W. Lindsey, 88, of Eldora, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora while under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 26, at the Eldora United Methodist Church, with Pastor Richard Boatman officiating. Burial followed in Eastlawn Memery Gardens in Eldora. Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora was in charge of the arrangements.

Merle was born Dec. 27, 1921, to Clarence H. and Eva M. (Steffens) Lindsey in Rowan. After graduating from Rowan High School he began farming outside Rowan in 1940. He married Miriam E. Broer at her family home in New Providence on May 28, 1944. On Thanksgiving Day in 1948 they moved to Eldora with their sons, Neil and Alan, where he farmed until 1996. After Miriam's death in 1996 he married Ruth Schnakenberg in August 1997. Ruth passed away in 2005.

Merle was an active member of his community having served as president of the Owasa School Board and as a Township Trustee for years. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Trustees at the Eldora United Methodist Church. Merle was also a lifelong member of the Masons. He enjoyed traveling and especially liked the winters he spent in Apache Junction, Ariz.

He is survived by his son, Neil of Eldora; son, Alan (Charlotte) of Lantana, Texas; grandchildren, Jami Larson, Gabe (Stacy) Lindsey, Melia Haynes, Marin Haynes, and Kinsey (Kirk) Samuels; and by great-grandchildren, Maverick and Lindsey Larson, Paige, Trinady, Xander and Xadge Lindsey, Mya Haynes-Galvan, and Preston Samuels.

Preceding him in death were his brother, Garth; and sister, Dorothy Gram.

Memorials may be directed to Care Initiatives Hospice.

IOWA FALLS—Etta Sherman, 97, of E Iowa Falls, passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at Scenic Manor, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls, with Pastor T. J. Norman officiating. A time of visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls. Burial will be at Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Kamrar.

Henrietta Antonetta Tapper, the daughter and youngest child of Harm and Antje (Van Heiden) Tapper, was born Feb. 10, 1913, on the Harm Tapper farm southeast of Webster City in Independence Township. Her father and her four grandparents all immigrated to Iowa from Ostfriesland, Germany. She attended Prairie Lawn rural school and graduated from Webster City Lincoln High School in 1931. After graduation she lived with her parents and worked near home.

In 1936/37, she attended and graduated from Pitze's Beauty School in Waterloo. She then worked at a beauty shop in Parkersburg which she later purchased and operated as Etta's Beauty Shop from 1938 to 1941. In Parkersburg she met her husband Raymond (Bud) Sherman and they married on June 26, 1938, in Spirit Lake. In 1941 they moved to California where Etta worked in a defense plant, Aluminum Company of America in Los Angeles. She later moved back to Iowa and worked at Whaley's Beauty Shop in Webster City. After the war in 1946 they lived in Webster City, Iowa Falls and Muscatine. They then resided in Boone from 1947 to 1957. The marriage ended and Etta moved to Iowa Falls in June of 1959 where she had purchased a beauty shop. She opened and operated Etta's Beauty Shop from August 1959 to 1996. The shop was first located in the Simcox building on Oak Street and was later moved to the Clair Simcox Office Building at 411 Oak St. She lived in the back of the shop for 3 1/2 years. In January 1964, Etta purchased her home on 301 Western Ave., where she remodeled the garage into her Etta's Beauty Shop. In 2008 she moved to the Scenic Manor Care Facility.

She grew up attending the Kamrar German Presbyterian Church and was a member of the First Christian Church of Iowa Falls. She enjoyed growing flowers and doing her own yard work. She loved fishing and went on many fishing trips with her nephew, Raymond Luppes and his family.

Etta Sherman is survived by her nephews and nieces: Raymond (Nadine) Luppes of Webster City, Roger (Linda) Tapper of Webster City, Donna (Gail) Utter of Novato, Calif., Connie Carter of Blairsburg and Raymond Tapper of San Clemente, Calif.; her sister-in-law: Doratha Tapper of Iowa Falls; and her good friends: James and Linda Mason of Iowa Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Harm and Antje Tapper; her sisters and brothers-in-law: Hilka (Harme) Luppes, Anna Tapper and Jen (Lloyd) Roberts; her brothers and sister-in-law: Sye Tapper and Harm (Catherine) Tapper; and her nieces and nephews: Erma (George) Studley, Eleanor (Frances) Bernard, JoAnn Luppes and Melroy Luppes.

IOWA FALLS—Dorothy J. Doupe, 75, of Iowa Falls, passed away Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at her home. Dorothy donated her body for scientific research and will be cremated at a later date.

Dorothy Joane French, the daughter of Harriet Fern (Hazen) and George William French, was born Nov. 7, 1934, on the family farm in Cherokee County. She attended the Cleghorn Consolidated Schools, graduating with the class on 1953. She then attended and graduated from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa, becoming a registered nurse in 1956. On May 29, 1954, Dorothy was united in marriage to Glenn Otis Doupe in South Dakota. To this union three children were born: Terry, Penny and Kim. Dorothy was a nurse for several hospitals around Iowa.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls and the United Methodist Women and Sarah Circle. She was also a member of the Iowa Falls Garden Club.

Dorothy Doupe is survived by her children: Terry Doupe of Elizabeth, Colo., Penny (Michael) Hofer of Council Bluffs, and Kim (Timothy) Wilson of Iowa Falls; seven grandchildren; three sisters: Virginia (Rodney) Brockmann of St. Charles, Illinois, Patsy Ann (Bob) Rowland of Carroll and Rebecca (Lee) Meyer of Alta; and two brothers: Thomas G. (Linda) French of Alta and Steven L. (Wanda) French of Branson, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents: George and Harriet French; a granddaughter: Tera Doupe; a sister: Priscilla Doupe; a brother: Jimmie D. French; and a very special aunt: Ruth Hazen.

Wanda Miller

HUBBARD—Wanda Miller, 85, of Hubbard, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at Hubbard Care Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 29, at Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, with burial at Hubbard Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion United Church of Christ or the Hubbard Care Center. Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Wanda Reece Miller was born on Feb. 4, 1925, at New Providence to Earl and Lilly (Whitehead) Reece. She was a member of the Friends Church in New Providence for 15 years. After her marriage, she became a member of Zion Evangelical Church, now known as Zion United Church of Christ. Wanda received her elementary and high school education in the New Providence School. Upon graduation, she attended the American Institute of Business (A.I.B.) in Des Moines and played AUU basketball.

After she attended A.I.B., she worked for Kansas City Life Insurance Company in Des Moines and from 1963-1965 worked at the Security State Bank in Hubbard. On Sept. 22, 1944, she was united in marriage to Gene L. Miller in her parents' home at New Providence. To this union three children were born, Gary Gene, Connie Lee and Craig Richard. Wanda lived on farms in the Hubbard area.

Wanda was an active and faithful member of Zion United Church of Christ serving as the primary Sunday school superintendant, helping with music for Bible school, participating in the Ladies Guild, playing for small groups and the Men's Quartet, and serving as the choir pianist for 35 years. She loved the outdoors, playing golf, tennis and bowling.

Wanda died unexpectedly on Oct. 26 at the Hubbard Care Center where she resided since Oct. 26, 2000.

Left to cherish Wanda's memory are her daughter, Connie Isaacson (Richard) of Des Moines; her son, Craig Miller (Jill) of Hubbard; her grandchildren, Anne Isaacson Rempe (Brad), Kathryn Isaacson Worple (William), Megan Isaacson Kading (Lance), Richard Isaacson (Kelly), Mark Isaacson (Atessa), Emily Miller Humke, Monica Miller Warburton (Kyle), Mindy Miller Stensland (Graig) and Reece Miller (Kelli); her great-grandchildren, Grace, Sam and Joseph Rempe, Isaac, Harry and Elizabeth Worple, Eli, Miles, Noah and Jonathan Kading, Addison Isaacson, Elle Isaacson, Chase and Tyler Humke, Lila and Nora Warburton, and Jackson and Preston Stensland; one sister, Ruth Sievert, and sister-in-law, Georgia Miller of Hubbard; along with many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Preceding Wanda in death are her parents, husband Gene, son Gary, granddaughter Amy Isaacson, brothers Lawrence and Dean Reece, and brother-in-law Glenn.

Ruth Virginia Rollene, 90, of Idaho Falls, Idaho and formerly of Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at her residence at Lincoln Court in Idaho Falls. She had been under the care of Hands of Hope Hospice.

She was born March 22, 1920, in Jewell, Iowa, to Edgar Ward and Bessie Grandy Ward. She grew up in Jewell and Dows, Iowa. In 1941, she married Dale Orville Rollene in Dows. Ruth and Dale farmed north of Dows until 1968, when they moved to Iowa Falls. Ruth worked at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital as a nurse's' aid for 18 years. She eventually moved to Idaho Falls to be near her son.

While living in Iowa Falls, she was a member of the First Methodist church. Her hobbies included ceramic painting.

She is survived by the following: son, Roger (Marie) Rollene of Idaho Falls; daughter, Virginia (Richard) Cheyne of Wellington, New Zealand; sisters: Norma Lake of Webster City, Iowa, Freda (Dick) Hutzel of Marshaltown, Iowa, Joan Pomeroy of Iowa Falls, and Shirley (Ike) Hansen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; seven grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Iowa Falls. Local arrangements are under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, Idaho Falls, ID.

BRAINERD, Minn.—Joann L. Collier, 75, of Brainerd, Minn., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital.

Joann was born July 30, 1935, in Iowa to Jacob and Ida Mae (Sunken) Hulsebus.

She will be missed by her husband, William; her children, Larry Lambkins and Melissa Collier; siblings, Ida Rush of Des Moines, Linda Long of Belle Plaine, Christena Parker of Iowa Falls, Ann Thomas of Iowa Falls, and Bob and Janice Hulsebus of Boonville, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her children, Kenny, Mark and Diane; her parents; and her brothers, LeRoy, Henry, Ray and Jacob Jr.

Donald Joseph Richtsmeier

ACKLEY—Donald Joseph Richtsmeier, 63, of Ackley, passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at his home in Ackley.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ackley with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.

Donald Joseph Richtsmeier was born on March 7, 1947, in Iowa Falls, the son of Maurice and Hazel (Ellefson) Richtsmeier. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and served in the U.S. Navy. On March 31, 1979, Donald was united in marriage to Linda Desmarais in Reno, Nev. Donald was a truck driver for Coe Transfer.

Donald is survived by his wife, Linda; children, Scott, Tim, Abbey, Ovid, Stacy, Garland and Kevin; nine grandchildren; a brother, Mike Richtsmeier of Bemidji, Minn.; three sisters, Ruth Schneider of Jesup, Mary Dellwo of Minneapolis, and Rita Julius of West Bloomfield, Mich.; and three godchildren, Kent Keninger, John Bartling and Maria Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Steven; and a sister, Mary Kathryn Richtsmeier.

STEAMBOAT ROCK—James E. McDonald, 88, of Steamboat Rock, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock, with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Burial will be at a later date in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery.

Velma C. Carpenter

IOWA FALLS—Velma C. Carpenter, 90, of Iowa Falls, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at the Hubbard Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Linn's Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls. Burial will follow at the Berlin Cemetery, Jackson Township, Owasa. A time of visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel.

Velma Clare Dougan was born Feb. 19, 1920, at Iowa Falls, the daughter of Florence Adel (Hife) and Edward Earl Dougan. She attended the Owasa Community Schools graduating with the class of 1938. On Oct. 17, 1943, she was united in marriage to Glen Leroy Carpenter at El Paso, Texas. She was a cook at the Eldora Country Club and the Hardin County Home for many years.

Velma Carpenter is survived by her sons: Albert (Mary) Carpenter of Ackley, James Carpenter of Iowa Falls, and Wayne (Darla) Carpenter of Robinsonville, Miss.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Edward and Florence Dougan; her husband: Glen Carpenter; a brother: Horace Dougan; and a sister: Bonnie Dougan.

Lois R. Hess

ELDORA—Lois R. Hess, 86, of Eldora, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Following cremation, memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, with Pastor Richard Boatman officiating. The family will be present to greet friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.

Lois was born Aug. 22, 1924, in Postville, daughter of Louis and Rose (Bellis) Benson, and graduated from country school in the Postville area. On Nov. 26, 1941, Lois was united in marriage to Clarence Hess at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora. Lois and Clarence made their home in Eldora, where she worked several part-time jobs, and they raised their family of six children, Joan, Loretta, David, Mike, John and Angie. Lois was a member of the Ivester Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed collecting angel and cardinal figurines, reading, working puzzles, playing cards, and really looked forward to attending senior social dinners at the Methodist and Lutheran churches.

Surviving are her children, Joan and husband Larry Harter of Lexington, Ohio, Loretta and husband Shorty Reinertson of Eldora, Mike and wife Joyce Hess of Iowa Falls, John and wife Kathy Hess of Eldora, and Angie and husband Jeff Waterhouse of Huntersville, N.C.; brothers, Lyle Benson and Fred Harrington; 18 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild and one step-great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence on July 29, 2008; son, David Hess; sister, Lorraine Brainard; and brother, Laverne Benson.

APLINGTON—Ronald Lee Van Ellen, 64, of Bella Vista, Ark., formerly of Aplington, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at the Mercy Health Center in Rogers, Ark.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at the First Reformed Church in Aplington. Burial will be held in Bethel Reformed Cemetery, rural Aplington. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington and continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
