HIAWATHA—Marjorie L. Costello, 89, died on Sunday, May 2,
2010, at the Hiawatha Care Center, following an extended
illness.
There will be private
family services. Marge will be cremated and buried in the
Berlin Cemetery located in the rural Eldora area.
Arrangements entrusted to the Cremation Society of
Eastern-Central-Western Iowa.
Marge was born on January
25, 1921 in New Providence, the daughter of Numa and Nettie
(Norman) Reece. She graduated from the Clemons High School
in Clemons. She was united in marriage to Clifford Whigham
in 1938. Clifford was killed in action in 1945 while serving
in the Army. She remarried in 1949 to Merle Costello and
spent the next 49 years on a farm just east of Owasa. In
recent years, she has lived in the Marion area and most
recently in Hiawatha.
Surviving is a daughter, Barbara (Bill) Crosser of Robins;
three grandchildren, David (Deb) Crosser of Robins, Greg
(Martha) Crosser of Edmond, Oklahoma and Deb (Brad) Buntz of
Robins; five great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Heard of
Steamboat Rock and Jessie Reece of Las Vegas, Nevada; and a
brother-in-law, Charles Huffman of Davenport.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruby
Huffman; and husbands, Clifford Whigham and Merle Costello.
A special thank you goes to the Promise House and Hiawatha
Care Center for the loving care that was given to Marge and
her family the past three years. Also, a special thank you
to Pastor Dale Holloway of the Living Hope Wesleyan Church
for spending the time he did praying with and visiting
Marge. Memorials may be given to the Living Hope Wesleyan
Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be
held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, May 7, at the Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Dumont, with the Rev. Jack Ritsema
officiating. Burial will be in the Hitesville Cemetery in
rural Aplington. Visitation will also be on Friday, at the

ALDEN—Jean Chrisjohn, 88, died on Monday, May 3, 2010, at
the Kavanaugh House in Des Moines.
A family service will be
held at the Surls Funeral Home with burial in the Alden
Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is in charge
of the arrangements. Anyone desiring may make memorial
donations to the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ
in Alden.
Jean was born the daughter
of Henry and Grace Bessman on February 11, 1922, at the
family farm west of Alden. She graduated from the Alden High
School and was united in marriage to Robert J. Chrisjohn on
April 13, 1942 in Bethany, Missouri. The marriage spanned 64
years until Robert’s passing in February of 2007.
Jean was preceded in death
by her parents; and five brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her
son, Robert G. Chrisjohn and wife, Janet of Cumming;
daughter, Barbara Allen and husband, Ed Allen of Des Moines;
five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

IOWA FALLS—Harvey J. Muller, 92, of Iowa Falls, passed away
on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa
Falls.
Private graveside services
will be held at a later date. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa
Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Harvey John Muller, was
born on May 6, 1917, in Section
7, German Township, Grundy County, the son of Marion F.
(Folkers) and Jake S. Muller. He attended the District 3
School in German Township, graduating from the eighth grade
in 1932. On July 9, 1941, Harvey joined the U.S. Army,
serving in the American Theater and the
European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, receiving two
bronze battle stars, four overseas service bars and the Army
Bronze Star Medal in 1945. He received his discharge as a
technical sergeant on September 20, 1945. On January 26,
1946, Harvey was united in marriage to Margaret S. Snittjer
at the St. John’s United Church of Christ, Ackley. To this
union one son was born, Harold. Harvey and Margaret farmed
east of Iowa Falls for many years.
He was a member of the
Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188, Iowa Falls, of
which he was a past commander and Honor Guard member.
Harvey J. Muller is survived by his wife of 63 years,
Margaret Muller of Iowa Falls; his son, Harold J. (Debra)
Muller of Iowa Falls; and three grandchildren, Allison
Muller of Des Moines, Jennifer (Josh) Ellingson of Ames and
Nicholas Muller of Bakersfield, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Marion
Muller; a baby brother in infancy; one sister, Lucile Murra;
a half brother, Ben Neymeyer; and a half sister, Leola Kuper.

MANSON—Thomas D. Porteous O.D., formerly of Iowa Falls,
followed the light to eternity on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at
his home in Manson.
Funeral services following
cremation, will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 15,
at the St. Thomas Catholic Church, Manson, under the
direction of Father Richard Reis. The family will be present
one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the St.
Thomas Cemetery in Manson. The Schuchert Funeral Home is in
charge of the arrangements.
Tom saw his first light on
August 6, 1947 in Manchester, the son of Donald F. and Mary
G. Porteous. He attended the parochial schools of
Marshalltown. He graduated from the Lenihan High School and
attended the Marshalltown Community College, prior to
obtaining his Bachelor and Doctor of Optometry Degree from
the Southern California College of Optometry in Los Angeles,
California. Dr. Porteous married the light of his life, Kim
Anile Hunter, on June 19, 1971 in Long Beach, California.
They established their residence in Iowa Falls in 1972;
raised their family, Scott and Analee; and he practiced
Primary Care Optometry and bending light with lenses, until
his retirement in 2006. Following retirement, they moved to
North Twin Lake, where Tom enjoyed the sunlight, fishing,
trap shooting and the lake activities.
Tom is survived by his
wife of 39 years, Kim; his mother, Mary G. Porteous of
Urbandale; his in-laws, W.M. and Ruth Hunter of Huntington
Beach, California; his son, Scott of Victorville,
California; his daughter, Analee (Rex) Gray and
grandchildren, Taitn and Jenah of Urbandale; a sister, Mary
Mitchell PhD of Cedar Rapids; and his sister-in-law, Jan
Benz of Huntington Beach, California.
His father, Donald
Porteous preceded him in death.

HUBBARD—Roberta J. King, 86, of Hubbard, formerly of Eldora,
passed away on Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Hubbard Care
Center in Hubbard.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, May 14, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Eldora,
with Pastor David Splett officiating. Interment was private.
The Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora was in charge of the
arrangements.
Roberta was born on
December 21, 1923 in Union, the daughter of Ross and Grace
(Goodwin) Pope. She attended school in Union, graduating
from the Union High School in 1941. She later met Carl J.
King and the two were united in marriage on April 4, 1946,
at Roberta's parents' home in Union. After Roberta and Carl
were married, they moved to a farm south of Owasa. The
couple welcomed four children.
Roberta worked for a short
time in a factory in Waterloo, worked as a telephone
operator in Union, sewed gun covers for Henson's in Waterloo
during the war, sold Avon products and most importantly,
worked as a stay-at-home mother.
She was a member of the
St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora and the Owasa Women's
Group. In her free time, Roberta enjoyed gardening, sewing,
needle working, cooking and loved living the farm life. Most
importantly, she was a wife and mother who loved her family
and loved spending as much time with them as she could.
Roberta is survived by her
husband of 64 years, Carl of Eldora; children, Cheryl (Dr.
David) Pence of Ankeny, Susan (Mel) Barz of Georgetown,
Texas, Nancy (Jim) Racey of West Branch and John King of
Hubbard; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;
sister, Irene Hart of Mason City; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; brother, Gerald Pope; and sisters, Velma
Steinfeldt and Janet Caster.

IOWA FALLS—Edna G. Lee, 86, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Thursday, May 13, 2010, at the Presbyterian Village.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, May 17, at the First United
Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Dr. Jeff
Blackman officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery,
Iowa Falls. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., on Sunday,
at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls. Memorials may be
directed to the Iowa Heart Association.
She was born on April 9,
1924 in rural Hardin County, the daughter of Theodore C. and
Ella Smith Crosser. Edna and Herman Jean Lee were married on
January 16, 1944 in Iowa Falls, by the Rev. Harold Dorrance
at the Open Bible Church Parsonage. They were farming south
of Iowa Falls when military duties called. Edna worked for
DeBaggio's Grill in Eldora during the time Herman was
serving in Germany. After he returned home, Herman worked at
Dettbarn's Service Station and farmed for Fred Fuller before
moving to Iowa Falls in January 1948, to the home they built
and lived in for the rest of their lives. Three children
were born to this union, Donna, Larry and Rodney Lee.
Edna was a long-time
member of the First United Methodist Church of Iowa Falls
and former member of the Hardin County Genealogy Society and
the Iowa Falls Craft Club.
Surviving are three children,
Donna (Dave) Reed, Larry (Linda) Lee and Rodney (Mary) Lee;
five grandchildren, Marcene (Roy), Stacy (Mike), Mike, Lance
and Amanda; and four great-grandchildren, Devin, Alexis,
Chloey and Sebastian.
Edna was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband, Herman; five brothers, Harold
Crosser, Fred Crosser, Dean Crosser, Eugene Crosser and
Ernest Crosser; and three sisters, Blanche Albrecht, Sylvia
Newell and Elsie Sievert.

Moines, with burial following in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in
Indianola.
Cheryl is survived by her
loving husband, Burl Bohall; daughters, Shelly Bowlin and
Bridget Bohall; son, James Bohall; father, Lester W. Edler;
sister, Karen Shogren; brothers, David Davisson, Robert
Stanfield, Lester and Kevin Edler; six grandchildren; and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her mother, Virginia Stanfield.

"John" Benning, 90, of Hampton, formerly of Ackley, passed
away on Monday, May 17, 2010, at the Dumont Wellness Center
in Dumont.
Memorial services will be
held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 22, at the St. Peter’s
United Church of Christ in rural Geneva, with the Rev. Phil
Milam officiating. Inurnment will be in the St. Peter’s
United Church of Christ Church Cemetery. The Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of the arrangements.
Albert was born on
December 18, 1919 in Franklin County, to Johannes (John) and
Elizabeth (Schmidt) Benning. He attended school at the
Osceola Township #5 in rural Franklin County. He was united
in marriage to Tena Irene Syhlman on September 25, 1948 in
rural Geneva. She preceded him in death on August 11, 1995.
Albert then married Margaret Reagan on September 14, 1996 in
rural Geneva.
He was a farmer and his
faith played a very important part for him as a lifelong
member of the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in rural
Geneva. Albert enjoyed farming and most of all music; one of
his favorite pastimes was playing in bands at nursing homes
and in parades.
He is survived by his
wife, Margaret Benning of
Latimer; sons, Merlin (Ann) Benning of Oelwein and Darrell
(Lori) Benning of Iowa Falls; grandchildren, Brent Benning,
Jason Benning, Stephanie Benning, Angela Lockner, Jonathan
Benning and Elizabeth Benning; and great-grandchildren,
Christopher, Ashley, Adryan, Ben, Lilly, Danica and Ayden.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Johannes (John)
and Elizabeth; wife, Tena; and brother, Donald.

HAMPTON—Deanna Kay
Bahr-Latham, 34, of Hampton, passed away on Monday, May 17,
2010, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa
City.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, May 21, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in
Hampton, with burial in the St. Mark’s Catholic Cemetery in
Iowa Falls. Fr. Bernard Grady officiated at the services.
The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, was in charge of
the arrangements.
Deanna was born on April
6, 1976 in Iowa Falls, to Glen and Laurie (Bielmaier) Bahr.
Deanna graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and
attended Ellsworth Community College and Buena Vista College
in Iowa Falls. She worked as an At-Risk Teacher for grades
K-8 at the Hampton-Dumont Schools in Hampton.
Deanna was a member of the
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton. Growing up she
enjoyed playing sports, especially softball where she
excelled as a pitcher. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards,
fishing and reading. Deanna loved spending time with her
children and her nieces and nephews playing games and
watching their activities.
Deanna is survived by her children, Cody Duncan, Zackary
Duncan and Abigail Latham of Hampton; mother, Laurie
(Steven) Henry of Iowa Falls; father, Glen (Kay) Bahr of
Iowa Falls; maternal grandparents, James and Marianne
Bielmaier of Tula Rosa, New Mexico; paternal
step-grandmother, Joyce Frisbie of Cresco; sisters, Darla
(Marty) Davis of Carroll and Danita (Alex) Janssen of Iowa
Falls; step-sisters, Jill Schafer of Iowa Falls, Christine
(Steve) Fraher of Urbandale, Sheli (Tyler) Duit of Iowa
Falls, Jamie (Jesse) Peterson of Iowa Falls, Susan (Dennis)
Milsom of Yulee, Florida and Joanne Wilson of Mason City;
step-brother, Chad Henry of Urbandale; and step-sister,
Crystal Henry of Iowa Falls.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents;
step-grandparents; and her infant daughter, Ashley.

Heetland, 91, of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, May 18, 2010,
at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.
Private family services
will be held. The Surls Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
Edward was born on August 2, 1918 in Ackley, the son of
Herman and Bonnie (Whitmore) Heetland. Edward graduated from
the Ackley High School. He joined the Army in Ft. Des Moines
in April of 1941 and was at the Battle of the Bulge. On
August 2, 1943, Edward was united in marriage with Lilian
Pannell in London, England. Once back in the United States,
Edward worked in the Foundry Department of John Deere and
also was involved in the Waterloo AMVETS.
He is survived by his two
sisters, Phyllis Duit of Iowa Falls and Maurine Lindaman of
Iowa Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lilian;
three sisters; and two brothers.

MASON CITY—Michael L.
Hammervold, 58, of Mason City, died on Thursday, May 20,
2010, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, surrounded
by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 22, at the First United
Methodist Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Stiles
officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph
Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Michael
Hammervold Memorial Fund in care of the family, or to Mason
City Youth Baseball. Arrangements are with the Major
Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory.
Michael was born on
November 5, 1951 in Mason City, the son of William A. and
Marlett C. (Dettman) Hammervold. He graduated from the Mason
City High School in 1970. Michael married Molly White on
July 21, 1973 in Alden. Over the years, Michael worked at
Pepsi, Northwestern Mutual, J & M Sports and most recently
the Mason City Schools.
He was a past member of
the Jaycees, Elks and the Moose Lodges. Michael enjoyed
spending time with his family, riding his motorcycle,
watching his grandchildren play baseball, soccer and dance,
and growing and taking care of his roses. He also enjoyed
working and tinkering around in his shed – aka “Club
Flamingo.”
Michael is survived by his
wife, Molly Hammervold of Mason City; his children, Travis
Hammervold and girlfriend, Chelsea Wales, both of Mason City
and Trish O’Hern and husband, Troy of Mason City; four
grandchildren, Carter, Lauren, Colton and Chloe; his mother,
Marlett Hammervold of Mason City; and one nephew, Matthew
Dettman of Mountain View, California.

FALLS—Martha Oleson, 85, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday, May
21, 2010, at the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, May 24, at the Open Bible
Church in Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls
was in charge of the arrangements.
Martha
was born on June 15, 1924 in Osceola Township, to Carl
Walden and Salma Lushmann. Martha was a member of the Open
Bible Church in Iowa Falls. She was united in marriage first
to Herman Huisenga and then later to Mert Oleson. Martha
enjoyed volunteering her time to the nutrition site, Adams
Bros. Auctions and her church. Most of all she loved her
time with all her kids and her “grandbabies” and a good dish
of ice cream.
Martha is survived by her
two sons, Dennis and Don Huisenga; five grandchildren, Troy
Huisenga, Brenda Runyan, Charlotte Nelson, Jeremy Huisenga
and Samantha Huisenga; and 10 great-grandchildren.

ACKLEY—Elizabeth H. Abbas, 77, passed away on Saturday, May
22, 2010, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, May 25, at the Austinville
Christian Reformed Church in Austinville, with burial
following in the Ackley Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.
The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley was in charge of the
arrangements.
Elizabeth was born on December 26, 1932, to Helmer and Leta
Arends. She was a lifelong resident of the Ackley-Aplington
area, graduating from the Ackley Schools. She married George
B. Abbas on September 2, 1955. This union was blessed with
seven children. Elizabeth was a loving mother and homemaker
and after her own children were grown, she became a much
beloved grandmother to 14 surviving grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and one
granddaughter, Stephanie.
She is survived by her three daughters and four sons, Joyce
and husband, Denny Schwebke of Anamosa, Marlyn Abbas and his
friend, Vicky of Waterloo, Darla and husband, Marvin Bierman
of Aplington, Karen and husband, Scott Miller of Denton,
Texas, Rodney Abbas and wife, Yuki of Tucson, Arizona,
Steven Abbas and wife, Deb of Iowa Falls and Greg Abbas of
Aplington; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren;
brothers, Vernon Arends and wife, Sandy of Iowa Falls and
Bernard Arends and wife, Joyce of Waterloo.

Sunday, May 23, 2010, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be
held at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 27, at the West Fork
United Methodist Church in rural Sheffield, with Pastor
Janet Rieckhoff-Faris officiating. Burial will be in the
Dumont Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, from
4-8:00
p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.

FALLS—Veneta Rose Norman, 82, of Iowa Falls and formerly of
Geneva and Bradford, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010, at
the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, May 27, at
the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls, with Pastor T. J.
Norman officiating. Burial will be in the Lindenwood
Cemetery, Geneva. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., on
Wednesday, at the Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes
Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Veneta
Rose Dodd, was born on June 30, 1927 in Franklin County, the
daughter of Francis Marie (Taylor) and William Victor Dodd.
She attended school in Hansell and graduated in 1945. Veneta
was united in marriage to Darwin Norman at the Little Brown
Church, Nashua, on June 2, 1946. She and Darwin had five
children and lived in Geneva and Bradford most of their
43-year marriage. Veneta worked as a cook at the Geneva
school, clerked in the couple’s grocery store in Bradford
and was a nurses aide at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital,
Iowa Falls, until Darwin’s ill health forced her retirement.
Veneta
enjoyed scrapbooking, shopping, Bible study, driving around
in her little car, but most of all she enjoyed spending time
with family. She was a member of the First Christian Church
and the Christian Women’s Fellowship of the Church.
Veneta will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Cheryl
Kent of Alden and Connie (Darrell) Bohlen of Shell Rock;
three sons, Jerry (Marcie) Norman of Bradford, T. J.
(Laurie) Norman of Iowa Falls and Mark (Judy) Norman of
Bradford; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She
is also survived by her sister, Donna (Norman) Roegner of
Ackley; two brothers, Bud Dodd of Geneva and Dan (Carolyn)
Dodd of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two sisters-in-law, Theresa
Dodd of Gladstone, Missouri and Bonnie Norman of Hampton;
and by many nieces and nephews.
Veneta
was preceded in death by her parents, William and Francis
Dodd; her husband, Darwin Norman; two grandchildren; her
son-in-law, George Kent; and a brother, Don Dodd.

IOWA FALLS—Leland "Lee" H. Hartwig, 80, died on Sunday, May
30, 2010, of cancer.
Funeral services were held
on Thursday, June 3, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa
Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery. The Surls Funeral
Home in Iowa Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
He was born on March 15,
1930 in Buckeye, to Herbert and Helen (West) Hartwig and
baptized the same year. He was confirmed in 1944. He
attended high school in Eldora and in Cedar Falls. He served
with the 1st Marine Division in the Korean Conflict. Leland
married Geneva Anderson in 1956. Seven children were born to
this union. They divorced. He married Patricia Ann Miller in
1978. Their home was flooded out in 2008. They then moved
from Georgetown to Iowa Falls.
Lee farmed and was self
employed as a truck driver. He received a presidential award
for driving with Dart. He was a member of the Immanuel
Lutheran Church. He retired in 2005.
Leland is survived by
daughters, Renee Hartwig, Margie Neikirk and husband, Dru
and Leslie Geerdes and husband, Bruce, all of Houston,
Texas, Lisa Launderville of Adel and Stacy Hartwig of
Scottsdale, Arizona; sons, Steve Hartwig of near Houston,
Texas and Brian Hartwig of Iowa Falls; stepchildren, Jeff
Miller of Baraboo, Wisconsin, Pamela Shugar and husband,
Larry of Ackley and Tammy Wilkenson and husband, Mark of
Charles City; many great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gary
Hartwig and wife, Barbara of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Myron
(Bud) Hartwig of Rogers, Arkansas; and sister, Dorothy
Barhite and husband, Lloyd of Iowa Falls.
Lee was preceded in death
by his parents; adopted son, David Anderson Hartwig; and
niece, Amy Hartwig.
