IOWA FALLS—Marie H. Gilmore, 87, of Iowa Falls, died on Sunday, August 1, 2010, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, August 4, at the Immanuel Memorial UCC in Alden, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls is in charge of the arrangements.

Marie Henrietta Gilmore, was born on December 18, 1922 in Alden, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Martha (Horstmann) Mensing. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1940 and the Thompson Beauty School in Des Moines. She owned and operated Marie's Beauty Salon in Dows until 1946. On October 16, 1946, Marie was united in marriage to Jack Gilmore at the Presbyterian Church in Dows. They lived on their farm west of Alden, raising dairy cattle and their three girls. They moved to Cedar Ridge in February 2004.

Marie was a member of the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden, since February 8, 1953. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, where she was a past Worthy Matron and also a member of the Legion Auxiliary. She shared a love for ballroom dancing with Jack and together they made many friends on the dance floor.

Marie is survived by her husband, Jack; three daughters, Jacalyn Fisher of Clear Lake, Judy Ose of Blairsburg and Jane Shepherd of Ames; seven grandchildren, Brooke (Fisher) Werneburg, Blair Fisher, Erin (Ose) Heiden, Michael Ose, Lindsey (Ose) Weber, Seth Shepherd and Blake Shepherd; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Keith, Beryl, Dick and Kenneth Mensing.

Lucile Reifschneider-Kuhlemeier

HUBBARD—Lucile Reifschneider-Kuhlemeier, 83, of Hubbard, died on Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 12, at the Salem Methodist Church in Hubbard. Luci was buried in the Hubbard Cemetery in Hubbard. The Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard was in charge of the arrangements.

Lucile Susie (Rankin) Reifschneider-Kuhlemeier, was born on January 3, 1927 in Hardin County, to Braiden and Clara (Rockow) Rankin. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1943 and continued her education by attending Ellsworth Community College, where she received her teaching certificate in 1945. Luci began teaching first grade at the Hubbard Community School in 1946 and 1947. She published and edited the Hubbard Review and had a "Cook's Corner" column in the North Central Farmer for 10 years, now known as the Iowa Falls Advertiser. Luci also took part in raising funds for building the golf course and swimming pool for the Hubbard Community.

In January 1971, Luci joined Mary Kay Cosmetics, becoming a beauty consultant and advanced to the position of future national sales director. She was consistently a top unit nationally and was named the first "Miss Go-Give" annual award by Mary Kay. Luci shared so much of herself with the new friends she had met and she remained active with Mary Kay Cosmetics to the end.

On July 19, 1947, Luci married Lowell Henry Reifschneider and remained married 34 years. Luci and Lowell shared their life together until his passing on May 15, 1982. Seven years later, she married Horace "Pat" Kuhlemeier on October 8, 1989. They enjoyed 18 years, sharing their life together until Pat's passing on April 4, 2008.

Over the years, Luci enjoyed watching her kids and grandkids play sports and enjoyed some serious UNO games with her grandchildren.

Luci leaves her sons, Larry and Judy Reifschneider of Louisville, Colorado, Don Reifschneider of Oneida, New York and Randy and Lori Reifschneider of Hubbard; her step-children, Court and Sandra Kuhlemeier of Rockford, Cindy and Larry Brandau of Ventura and Kathy and Ken Bushbaum of Rudd; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Kathryn Rankin of Iowa Falls; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Merv and Evie Reifschneider of Hubbard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Lowell Reifschneider and Pat Kuhlemeier; her sister, Shirley Ioerger; and her brother, Bobbie Rankin.

David W. Milbrandt

IOWA FALLS—David W. Milbrandt, 62, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Monday, August 9, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 14, at the Iowa Falls High School Auditorium. Visitation and refreshment will follow the services. The Linn’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

David Wayne Milbrandt, was born on April 13, 1948 at New Hampton, the son of Marilyn Jean (Knoll) and Delfred C. Milbrandt. He attended the Alfred Elementary School in Lawler and graduated from the North High School in West Union, with the class of 1966. He then attended Ellsworth Junior College, Iowa Falls, receiving an associate’s degree in petroleum marketing. He was united in marriage to Linda Ann Ramey on September 21, 1968 at Iowa Falls. To this union a son was born, Sean Milbrandt. On March 12, 1969, David entered the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

David entered the military during the Vietnam Conflict and his experiences there in part, motivated him to search for spiritual truths. He found those truths in his study of the Bible and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on April 6, 1974. He served as a Christian minister faithfully from that date until his death. His greatest joy in life was to help people gain the knowledge he had and to improve their lives as he had done. He was employed by Ralston Purina Mills of Iowa Falls.

David W. Milbrandt is survived by his wife, Linda Milbrandt of Iowa Falls; his son, Sean (Kate) Milbrandt of Waukon; two grandchildren, Riley Milbrandt and Delaney Gibson, both of Waukon; his sister, Diane (Rollis) Zupke of Sumner; his brother, Dennis (Beth) Milbrandt of Rockwell; and his beloved black lab, Bo.

Eva Brass

IOWA FALLS—Eva Brass, 88, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Monday, August 9, 2010, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, August 13, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls. A time of visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Eva Mae Schultz, was born on September 4, 1921 at Hubbard, the daughter of Julia Louise (Jacobson) and Marvin Grover Schultz. She attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools. On May 14, 1947, Eva was united in marriage to Claude Anthony Brass at Webster City. To this union two children were born, Barbara and Robert. Eva worked for Carl’s Hamburger Shop, Iowa Falls and as a clerk for the Ben Franklin Store, Iowa Falls.

She was a member of the NO Bridge Club, Iowa Falls.

Eva Mae Brass is survived by her daughter, Barb Klemme of Alden; her daughter-in-law, Liz Brass of Iowa Falls; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Olivia Schultz of San Rafael, California and Elizabeth Nelson of Rockwell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Julia Schultz; her husband, Claude Brass; her son, Robert Brass; her son-in-law, Frank Klemme; and two brothers, Bernard Charles Schultz and Dale LaVern Schultz.

Kenneth Balvanz

ALDEN—Kenneth Balvanz, 78, of Alden, died on Monday, August 9, 2010, at his home in Alden.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 13, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alden. The Surls Funeral Home in Alden was in charge of the arrangements.

Kenneth Charles Balvanz, was born on July 28, 1932 in Eldora, the son of Frank and Hattie (Lettow) Balvanz. He graduated from the Eldora High School. Kenneth served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. On February 20, 1955, Kenneth was united in marriage to Ellen Dettbarn at Eldora. Kenneth was baptized on September 24, 1932 and was confirmed on April 14, 1946, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church; a member of the Collins-Dunning American Legion Post #201 of Alden; and the Aid Association for Lutherans.

Kenneth is survived by his two sons, Jeff and his wife, Denise of Ames and Frank and his wife, Kim of Marion; a brother, Marvin "Mick" and his wife, Joan of Eldora; two sisters, Irene Ziesman of Eldora and Janet Bradford of Bakersfield, California; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ellen.

Donald Lynn Roberts

IOWA FALLS—Donald Lynn Roberts, 98, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, August 9, 2010, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 13, at the Ellis Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Lynn Roberts, was born on August 14, 1911, to Fred and Minnie (Tulp) Roberts in Iowa Falls. Donald graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1928 and later became a self-employed farmer. On March 17, 1936, Donald was united in marriage to Louise Luetta Bonin at the Eldora Lutheran Church.

He was a Methodist and was on the Owasa School Board.

Donald is survived by his wife, Louise; son, Donald (Barbara) Roberts of Ackley; daughter-in-law, Donna McManus of Memphis, Tennessee; grandson, Randy (Donna) Roberts of Ackley; granddaughters, Rosemary (Brian) Broshar of Garner, Rachel (Chris) Diggins of Rockwell and Jill (Marty) Moore of St. Louis, Missouri; 10 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gary Roberts; three brothers, Cecil, Matt and Russell Roberts; and a granddaughter, Rhonda (Roberts) Sunken.

ALDEN—Wanda L. Grimm, 104, of Alden, died on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.

Wanda L. Grimm, was born on October 25, 1905 in Shellsburg, the daughter of George and Berith (Booth) Scott. She graduated from the Shellsburg High School. On October 25, 1923, Wanda was united in marriage to William Floyd Grimm in Vinton.

Wanda is survived by her son, Richard Grimm and his wife, Joan of Waterloo; four grandsons, Jerry Grimm of Alden, Kevin Grimm of Iowa City, Todd Grimm of Whetstone, Arizona and Chad Grimm of Waterloo; a granddaughter, Sarah Nelson of Waterloo; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; son, Donald; grandson, Wyatt Grimm; great-granddaughter, Alexandria Grimm; three sisters; and four brothers.

Lillian J. Boeke

IOWA FALLS—Lillian J. Boeke, 91, of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 14, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Thomas Ross officiating. Burial will be in the Hubbard Cemetery in Hubbard. Family and friends are invited for fellowship and lunch in the church's fellowship hall following the church service. The Boeke Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian Josephine Boeke, was born on June 18, 1919 in McCord, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Joseph and Ida (Espe) Girouex. Lillian was raised in Radcliffe by her Grandmother, Sarah Espe after the deaths of her parents. She attended the Radcliffe School, graduating from the Radcliffe High School in 1937. After graduation, she attended Central College and was a one-room school teacher in several townships in the Radcliffe, Buckeye and Alden areas. On October 24, 1942, she was united in marriage to Erwin H. Boeke in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Hubbard, Ames and Radcliffe, farming and raising their family. In 1993, they sold their house in Radcliffe and moved into the house next to the Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe and worked for Mark Boeke until 1999. They moved to Iowa Falls in September of 1999.

Lillian was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls. She was confirmed in the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, where she was active in the Ladies' group and was a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 60 years.

Lillian loved to bake, garden and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lillian is survived by one daughter, Lois and son-in-law, Don Jones of Iowa Falls; three sons, Carl Boeke and wife, Debrah of Lakeville, Minnesota, James Boeke and wife, Ina of Cedar Rapids and Randall Boeke and wife, Connie of Highlands, Texas; eight grandchildren, Lori (Troy) Miller, David (Susan) Jones, Lisa (Luke) Tibbs, Andrew (Jine) Boeke, Nathan Boeke, Renae Boeke, Rachel Boeke and Christina Boeke; five great-grandchildren, Grace, Faith and Hope Jones and Daniel and Nicholas Tibbs; two step-grandchildren, Kristy Barnhill and Travis Baily; and one step-great-grandson, Aidan Barnhill.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Erwin; and brothers, Ohmer Girouex, Joseph Girouex and Arnold Espe.

Gene Roberts

HUBBARD—Gene Roberts, 81, of Hubbard, died on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at the Hubbard Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, August 14, at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard. G. E. Roberts will be buried in the Hubbard Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Zion UCC Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 368, Hubbard; or to the Hubbard Library Fund Campaign, P.O. Box 265, Hubbard. The Boeke Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Gerald Eugene "Gene" Roberts, was born on March 30, 1929, on a farm in Monroe County. Gerald was the youngest of eight children born to Guy and Esther (Ward) Roberts. Gerald received his education by attending the Enon Country School and entered the Moravia High School, but had to quit school to help care for the family farm after his father was laid up. His father's health improved and Gene worked various jobs until he got married. On September 18, 1948, G. E. was united in marriage to Lela Blome at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church (Zion UCC) in Hubbard. They resided in Denver, Colorado for two years. Gene began farming once they returned from Colorado. They farmed their entire working lives in Tipton Township. In 1970, Gene added a Pioneer Seed Dealership to his farming operation and operated the dealership until 1988. Gene went into partnership with his son Jeff in the mid-1970s.

G. E. served on many boards including the Hubbard Medical Center, Hubbard - Garden City Farmer's Co-op, Hubbard Golf Course, Hubbard School Board, Zion Church Council, Hardin County N.R.C.S., Hubbard Care Center and the Hardin County Tax Review Board. G. E. was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard and a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1674 in Iowa Falls.

The past 14 years Gene and Lela enjoyed spending time at their winter home in Mission, Texas. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing cards with friends. He wanted to make sure everyone had plenty and enjoyed sharing the bounty of harvest, whether corn or vegetables from the garden, cream can dinners or grapefruit and oranges from Texas, with his friends!

G. E. is survived by his wife, Lela of Hubbard; one son, Jeffrey and wife, Rhonda of Hubbard; one daughter, Nancy and husband, Lee Faw of The Woodlands, Texas; four grandsons, Clay and wife, Kasie Roberts and Cooper Roberts and Nicholas and Joshua Faw; one great-granddaughter, Aleighia; two sisters, Mildred Henderson of Newton and Deena Steinbach of Peru, Illinois; along with many other relatives and friends.

G. E. was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Douglas as a child; four brothers, Wendell, Hilbert, Keith and Burdell; and one sister, Margery.

Al Meyer

IOWA FALLS—Al Meyer, of Iowa Falls, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at his home. This was after a long, courageous battle with melanoma.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, August 19, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with burial at a later date in Whittemore. The Surls Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Alan William Meyer, was born on January 1, 1967, to Thomas and Wilma (Schmeling) Meyer in Emmetsburg. Alan graduated from the Buffalo Center-Rake High School and then attended college at Waldorf, Dana and St. Louis University. While at Waldorf College and Dana College, Alan was on the football team, playing as their hard-hitting free safety. On August 6, 1988, Alan was united in marriage to Kris Grimes in Buffalo Center. From 1994-2002, Alan was the CFO of the Green Belt Bank & Trust and then later became manager at the Highland Golf Club.

Alan was involved in the National Wildlife Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. His hobbies included golfing, fishing, hunting, woodworking, coaching boys' booster basketball and spending quality time with his children.

Alan is survived by his wife, Kris; sons, Alex, Kyle and Luke Meyer; daughters, Katie and Ellie Meyer; a brother, Randy (Abby) Meyer; and niece, Lilly Meyer of Sheffield.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Wilma Meyer; and grandparents, Leonard and Lillian Meyer and Otto and Norma Schmeling.

IOWA FALLS—Ethel Shane, 88, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died on August 14, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Village.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, August 18, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls is in charge of the arrangements.

Ethel (Bonin) Shane, was born on July 21, 1922, to Max and Edith (Mitchell) Bonin. She was raised in Hardin County where she attended public schools. Following her education, she assisted her parents with farming. On November 6, 1942, Ethel was united in marriage to Howard E. Shane in Unionville, Missouri. The couple made their home in Iowa Falls where she worked at various jobs. In the mid-1960s, Ethel became a certified nurses assistant and became employed at the Iowa Falls Care Center. In 1977, Ethel moved to Sandy, Oregon, to be closer to her son, Darrell. She worked in cabinet manufacturing and later worked for the United Foam Company in Portland, Oregon. Following her retirement in 1981, she moved to Sioux Falls, where she lived with her son, Howard and his family.

Ethel was a member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Sioux Falls. In the summertime, Ethel liked going fishing in area waters. She also enjoyed bowling, reading, square dancing and had taught herself to crochet. When the opportunity presented itself, she loved traveling to visit family members. Blessed with an energetic spirit, Ethel loved riding on motorcycles and would eagerly go out of her way to ride.

In the center of her life was her unwavering faith in the Lord. She was enthusiastic in sharing her faith with others. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ethel always made sure to provide for the needs of others before her own.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, the Rev. Howard 0. Shane and his wife, Janice of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Darrell Shane and his wife, Olga of Darlington, South Carolina; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Louise Roberts of Iowa Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; seven infant siblings; four brothers, Herman, Carl, Hugo and Otto; and a sister, Viola Whipple.

Dr. Dean Mason Harms

AMES—Dr. Dean Mason Harms, of Ames, died of pancreatic cancer at his home on Sunday, August 15, 2010.

Memorial services will be held at the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames, on Wednesday, August 18, at 1:00 p.m.

Dr. Harms was born on October 25, 1942, to Hyla Ann Severson Harms and Rudolph John Henry Harms in Alden. He grew up on a farm near Alden and graduated from the Alden High School, Iowa State University and the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He married Mary Jane Brinkman on June 11, 1966, at the Colo United Methodist Church, Colo. Dr. Harms completed his internship at the Sacramento County Hospital in California, his ophthalmology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and served as a medical officer in the U.S. Air Force. In 1975, he began his ophthalmology practice in Ames. He was known as a dedicated and compassionate physician who always considered his patients as friends.

Dr. Harms was a member and served on the Board of Councilors of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He held leadership positions in the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology, the Story County Medical Society and the Ames Morning Rotary Club and was a member of the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames.

Dr. Harms enjoyed doing volunteer work at the Central Christian Ophthalmology Clinic in El Progresso, Honduras (CCSM de Honduras), where he did eye surgery and was on the board of the L.D. Perry Memorial Scholarship Fund, which he helped establish. A library serving the high school and community in El Porvinier, Honduras, has been named in his honor. He also enjoyed gardening, travel and catching a nice walleye.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Philip Harms, Sarah (Gary) Freitas and Mark Harms; and three treasured grandchildren, Joseph, Ryan and Julia Freitas; his sister, Ann (Richard) Gamble of Spirit Lake; brother, Everett (Ann) Harms of Alden; and nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the City of Ames Trees for Parks Memorial Fund or to the Story County Conservation (Friends of Conservation Trust Fund).

Mary Andrea Olson, was born on October 18, 1954 at Lake City, Iowa, the daughter of O'Letha (Andreason) and Benjamin Olson. She attended the Rockwell City Community Schools. She was a self employed Day Care Provider.

Mary A. Olson is survived by her children, Stephanie Renee Olson of Fresno, California, Travis Lee Olson of Iowa Falls and Letha Ann Olson (Nick Lewis) of Waterloo; a grandson, Parker Gavin Lewis of Waterloo; a sister, Jan (Lee) Thielmann of Ankeny; two brothers, Jim (Rhonda) Olson of Coalville and Terry (Eileen) Olson of Duncombe; Stephanie's father, Craig Hepp of Memphis, Tennessee; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and O'Letha Olson; an infant brother, Benjamin Olson, Jr.; a sister, Carol Stough; a niece, Dana Stough; and a long time friend and father of Travis and Letha, David Collins.

Herbie Lake

HUBBARD—Herbie Lake, 99, of Hubbard, died on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at the Hubbard Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, August 21, at the Cottage Community Church, rural Iowa Falls, with burial in the Cottage Community Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

The Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard is in charge of the arrangements.

Herbie Anita (Berve) Lake, was born at Lakefield, Minnesota on April 27, 1911, to Arthur Berve and Marie (Maakestad) Berve. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Herbie graduated from the Radcliffe High School in 1928 with a Normal Training Certificate. She taught for eight years in rural schools in Hamilton and Hardin Counties. Herbie married Emery Lake on September 4, 1937 at Owatonna, Minnesota. She became a member of the Cottage Community Church and held several offices in the church and Ladies Circle. Emery and Herbie lived and farmed in the Cottage area for 49 years.
 

Herbie also served several years as the chairman of the Farm Bureau Women. They retired from farming in 1986 and moved to their home in Hubbard. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1987. Emery passed away in 1989.

 

She is survived by her son, Charles Lake and daughter, Nita Clark, both of Loveland, Colorado; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Jansen of Hubbard; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emery; parents; brothers, Keith and Ray Berve; sister, Wildes Lowe; son, Keith Lake; daughter-in-law, Joan Lake; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Norman Maifeld

HUBBARD—Norman Maifeld, 84, died on Thursday, August 19, 2010, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 24, at the Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard. Norman was buried in the Washington Reformed Church Cemetery in Ackley.

Norman Lee Maifeld, was born on April 13, 1926 in Butler County, Washington Township, to Henry G. and Lillie Mae (Harris) Maifeld. He attended rural school in Washington Township. On January 12, 1949, he was united in marriage to Imogene Ella Bierman at her parents' home in Aplington. Norman farmed and was a farm hand for many years. He then worked for the city of Hampton for several years and worked for AM Cyanamid at the time of his retirement.

He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa Falls.

Norman is survived by his son, Duane and wife, Becky Maifeld of Hubbard; grandson, Andy Maifeld and wife, Lisa; granddaughter, Gretchen Maifeld; great-granddaughter, Madison Maifeld; great-grandsons, Jayden and Cole Maifeld and Landon Myers; and brother, Lloyd Maifeld of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Imogene; daughter, Virginia; grandson, Jamie Maifeld; brother, Mern; and sister, Lavola.

Frances E. "Speed" Zeiger

SYRACUSE, Nebraska—Frances E. "Speed" Zeiger, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse, Nebraska, at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 21 days.

A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, August 24, at the St. Paulinus Catholic Church in Syracuse, with the Rev. Father Michael Stec officiating. Burial was in the Park Hill Cemetery, Syracuse. The family suggests memorials to the St. Paulinus Parish Hall Fund. The Fusselman-Allen-Harvey Funeral Home of Syracuse, was in charge of the arrangements.

Frances was born on June 29, 1925 in rural Greeley County, Nebraska, to Aaron Eldon and Clare Irene (Giles) Cary. After finishing high school, Frances attended Normal Training and went to work as a teacher. During World War II, she worked for the Ordinance Plant in Grand Island, after which she returned to teaching. She was united in marriage to Clarence Wayne Zeiger on March 27, 1947 in Oberlin, Kansas. Together they celebrated 63 years of marriage and raised four children, Ronald, Francis, Frederic and Angela. During their married life, she cared for their home, worked as a postal clerk and taught art classes around the area.

She was a member of the St. Paulinus Catholic Church in Syracuse and belonged to the Altar Society and several Circle Groups. She enjoyed playing bridge, working with oil paints and teaching art classes. For many years, she and Wayne enjoyed traveling, wintering in New Mexico and spending summers in Wyoming. Frances was a 12th-generation Mayflower descendent of Richard Warren, a family heritage that she was very proud of.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence "Wayne" Zeiger of Syracuse, Nebraska; children, Ronald Zeiger and wife, Janet of Syracuse, Francis "Clif" Zeiger and wife, Aileen of Wheaton, Illinois, Frederic Zeiger and wife, LeeAnn of Wilber, Nebraska and Angela Ripa and husband, Dale of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren, Rachel Zeiger, Kenneth Zeiger, Steven Zeiger, Matthew Zeiger, Paul Zeiger, Lucas Zeiger, Abraham Zeiger, JohnMark Zeiger, Amelia Zeiger, Benjamin Zeiger, Cliff Zeiger, Lauren Ripa, Madeline Ripa and Anna Ripa; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Eulalia Cunningham of Iowa Falls and Meta Mahoney of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska; and brother, Jerry Cary of Greeley, Nebraska; and by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bud Cary; sister, Clara Vanderloop; and grandchildren, Ryan and Anthony Zeiger.

Robert W. Roelfsema

TOMBSTONE, Arizona—Robert W. Roelfsema, 80, of Tombstone, Arizona and formerly of Steamboat Rock and Eldora, died of cancer on Sunday, August 22, 2010, at his home.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Robert "Bob" Warren Roelfsema, was born on August 16, 1930, in Algona, the son of Conrad and Florence (Bargar) Roelfsema. He graduated from the Paton High School in 1948, where he was active in sports and band, and later attended the University of Wyoming and the University of Northern Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Bob was united in marriage to Kathryn Jons on December 26, 1954 at Paton. To this union, three children were born. The couple later divorced. He was employed by the State Training School and Pine Lake Country Club, both in Eldora, and was a piano tuner for many years.

He enjoyed looking for Indian artifacts and once while looking for arrowheads, Bob found a wedding ring that had been lost by a young farm wife. He was able to track down the elderly woman who had lost it many years before and return it to her. Other hobbies included playing bridge, golfing, and Bob was an accomplished pianist. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Boston Red Sox. Bob was a member of the American Legion.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Kirby (Ken) Stoller of Dallas, Oregon and Kerrin (Dallas) Jass of Alden; son, Kip (Jill) of Denver, Iowa; five grandchildren, Emily Barfknecht, Molly Stoller, Luke Roelfsema, Samantha Roelfsema and Alex Roelfsema; three great-grandchildren, Katie Barfknecht, Carter Roelfsema and Leah Roelfsema; a brother, Gene (Jeanne) Roelfsema of Sheriton, Wyoming; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

CEDAR FALLS—Neil L. Havens, 73, of Cedar Falls, died on Sunday, August 22, 2010, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 26, at the Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, with burial in the North Lawn Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Memorials will be designated at a later date.

He was born on November 20, 1937 in Iowa Falls, the son of Percy and Mary Ruth (Brown) Havens. He married Karen K. Price on June 7, 1964 in Iowa Falls. She died on June 6, 1994. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1956 and served in the National Guard. He was employed as a painter at the University of Northern Iowa, retiring in 1998.

Neil enjoyed participating in bowling and golfing leagues throughout the years, and was a wonderful artist.

Survivors include two daughters, Darci (Hans) Koehnk of Jewell and Dawn (Aaron) Garms of West Salem, Wisconsin; two grandchildren; a brother, David (Diane) Havens of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; and two sisters, Bernadine Eckerson of Worthington, Minnesota and Elaine (Darold) Frerichs of Venice, Florida.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Philip Havens; and a daughter, Melissa K. Havens.

IOWA FALLS—Lois Evelyn Grant, 94, of Iowa Falls and formerly of Pocahontas, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at the Scenic Manor, Iowa Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, August 30, at the St. Mark's Catholic Church, Iowa Falls. A Rosary will be held at 9:15 a.m., on Monday, followed by a time of visitation from 9:30 a.m. until Mass time. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m., on Monday at the Calvary Cemetery, Pocahontas. The Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Lois E. Vosika, was born on January 19, 1916 in Sherman Township, Pocahontas County, the daughter of Mary Frances (Hudek) and Adolph William Vosika. She graduated from the Pocahontas High School with the class of 1934. She received a degree in general business from Chillicothe Business College, Chillicothe, Missouri. On September 10, 1940, Lois was united in marriage to Duncan Casper Grant at Pocahontas. To this union four children were born, Linda, Richard, Pam and Barbara. Lois was a homemaker and had worked as a bookkeeper for the Rolfe State Bank and clerked at the Pocahontas County Courthouse.

She was a member of the Chapter AH of TTT, American Legion Auxiliary, Wally Byam Airstream Travel Club, Iowa Falls Garden Club, SS. Peter and Paul Church, Pocahontas, the SS. Peter & Paul Altar Society, St. Mark Catholic Church, Iowa Falls and served as a 4-H and Cub Scout Leader. Lois had a zest for life. A lifelong learner, she enjoyed crafts, quilting, candle making and hand work. She was a talented herb and flower gardener, loved fishing and camping, collected antiques and embraced all things Scottish. After retirement she had lived in Lakeview, Arkansas.

Lois is survived by her four children, Linda (Tom) Mosier of Raleigh, North Carolina, Richard Grant of Alton, Illinois, Pam (Steve) Braga of Iowa Falls and Barbara (Mark Armstrong) Grant of Springville; five grandchildren, Cameron (Shannon) Mosier of Raleigh, Peter Grant of Alton, Brent Braga of Grand Forks, North Dakota and Katie Braga and Sarah Braga of Grimes; one brother, Richard Vosika of Twin Lakes, Manson, Iowa; and one sister, Jeanette Frost of Windsor Heights.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Adolph Vosika; her husband, Duncan Grant; and two brothers, Cyril J. Vosika and Lowell Vosika.

IOWA FALLS—Darrah Lewis Roberts, 87, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, August 30, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton, after a long illness.

Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., on Friday, September 3, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls. Private family services will be held on Saturday. Memorials will be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa.

Darrah L. Roberts, was born on April 27, 1923 in Hampton, Iowa. He was the son of Donald B. Roberts and Dorothy (Darrah) Roberts Downing of Hampton. He was raised in Lee Township, Franklin County and attended country school four miles north of Burdette. In 1940, he graduated from the Iowa Falls High School.

During World War II Darrah served as an Army Air Corps pilot in Europe. After the war he farmed in Lee Township and married Donna Mae Modlin on September 18, 1948. In 1950, he was recalled as a pilot in the new U.S. Air Force and served three more years in Nashville, Tennessee and Japan. He was released in 1953 and they started farming again, this time two miles east of Iowa Falls, where they have lived for over 57 years.

Darrah belonged to the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post 188, of which he was the Honor Guard Commander for 25 years, the VFW, 40 & 8 and was a long-time member of the Elks.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna Mae; three children and five grandchildren. They are daughter, Linda Joyce Forristal and husband, Liam of Greenbelt, Maryland and their three sons, Brian, Robert and Brendan; and daughter, Deborah Kay Arp and husband, Richard of Clutier and their children, Christopher and Amanda; and his son, John Darrah Roberts of Iowa Falls.

He was preceded in death by both parents; step-father, Arlan Downing; his sisters, Margaret Ann and Dominie Kay; his brother, James C. Roberts; and a sister-in-law, Gerry.

Ray M. Valentine

PLEASANT HILL—Ray M. Valentine, 90, of Pleasant Hill, died on Monday, August 30, 2010, at the Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, September 3, at the St. Mark Episcopal Church, of which he was a member. Burial will be in the Altoona Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel, where a prayer and memory service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Mark Episcopal Church or the Hospice of Central Iowa.

Ray was born in Greene, on December 27, 1919 to Ralph and Nora (Sanford) Valentine. He grew up in Eldora and graduated from the Laurens High School. Ray served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. While stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he met Genevieve Register. They were married on January 26, 1946. After completing his military service they returned to Iowa and resided in Iowa Falls. In 1964, they moved to Pleasant Hill. Ray worked for over 25 years at Prestressed Concrete of Iowa, retiring as plant supervisor in 1984.

Ray was a Golden Gloves and Marine Corps boxer. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, bowling and was an avid 500 player. He loved to make Uncle Ray's Old Fashioned Peanut Brittle, Fudge and Brownies for his church bazaars, as well as writing for the St. Mark Church newspaper. Ray will be remembered for his love of people. He many times opened his home to people in need and was considered a father figure by many. He will be greatly missed.

Ray is survived by his wife of 64 years, Genevieve "Genny" of Pleasant Hill; three sons, foster son, Joseph (Sandy) Register of Valdosta, Georgia, Melvin (Linda) Valentine of Waterloo and Robert (Lou Ann) Valentine of Pelion, South Carolina; daughter, Susan (Richard) Churchill of Charlotte, North Carolina; nine grandchildren, Wendy Valentine, Kristie Cantu, Lance Valentine, Joe Churchill, Amy Porter, Melinda Valentine Davis, Ryan Valentine, Michael Churchill and Amana Valentine; 15 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Glennis Falica, Maureen Neessen, Neva Moravec and Marjorie Roy; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Gladys Lavine, Ruth Steely and Avis Nielson; and four brothers, Lyle, James, Harold and Gerald Valentine.

HAMPTON—Robert H. "Bob" Uhlenhopp, 70, of Hampton, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, September 3, at the Geneva United Methodist Church, with burial in the Lindenwood Cemetery, rural Geneva. Visitation will be on Thursday, from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Pastor Harry Imlay will officiate.

Theodore "Ted" L. Roling

ELDORA—Theodore "Ted" L. Roling, 87, of Eldora,. passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at the Eldora Nursing & Rehab Center, while under the care of the Iowa River Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, September 3, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora, with the Rev. Paul Baldwin as celebrant. Burial followed in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Eldora. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
