CRASH
CLAIMS ALDEN MAN’S LIFE
"Kit" plane may have stalled during landing
BY SARA KONRAD
AND ERIC MANDEL
July 17,2010
William “Bill” Klemme was featured with his
plane, a Zenith 701, in a February Times
Citizen article. Klemme built the plane
himself. |
An Alden man who
spent three years building his own plane, died
Thursday, when that plane crashed near the Iowa
Falls Municipal Airport during its first flight.
According to
reports from the Iowa Falls Police Department,
74-year-old William “Bill” Klemme was piloting his
Zenith 701, a single-engine aircraft described as a
“kit” plane, when it crashed at about 1:30 p.m.
“Witnesses who saw the plane coming in and heard it
basically said it looked like he was coming in for a
landing and sounded like the plane engine stalled
and he went straight down, nose-diving into the
ground,” said Police Chief Ron Kuhfus. The plane
crashed into a soybean field, approximately 1/4 mile
south of the airport.
Klemme was the
only passenger on board and Kuhfus said it appears
he was killed on impact. By the time emergency crews
arrived on scene the plane was fully engulfed in
flames. One of the witnesses Thursday was Iowa Falls
Municipal Airport Director Jane Knutson, who knew
Klemme well through his years as a member of the
Windsockers Chapter 1324 and a frequent visitor to
the airport. She said the flight was Klemme’s first
in the plane he built himself.
“His airplane was the joy of his life. He was so
proud of it,” Knutson said Friday. “He was fabulous.
He was creative. He was dearly loved. We’ll just
miss him.” Knutson said she saw Klemme take off
Thursday. As he attempted to land the first time, he
powered back up and went around again. It was during
the second approach that the plane crashed, she
said.
Klemme, who was featured in a February Times Citizen
article about his plane, said he’d put more than
1,000 hours into building it, starting in December
2006 and finishing it late last year. The bulk of
the assembly was done in Klemme’s shop at his farm
near Alden. He said he’d purchased the kit from a
manufacturing plant in Missouri, after doing
extensive research.
“I look at flying as a hobby more than anything,”
Klemme told the Times Citizen earlier this year.
“It’s a good way to relax and I have always planned
on doing something like this when I had the time.”
This spring, the Federal Aviation Administration
conducted a thorough inspection of Klemme’s plane
before deeming that it was safe for flight. “The
plane had been tested by the FAA,” Knutson said. “It
was structurally sound and he was complimented on a
job well done.”
In February Klemme said he’d logged more than 7,000
hours of flight, most recently in a Cessna 152, an
aircraft similar to the Zenith 701. “We go out and
do maneuvers and practice our landings and takeoff,”
Klemme told the Times Citizen. “I believe it helps
me get familiar with how the Zenith 701 will
operate.” Klemme said he was looking forward to
getting his plane up in the air this year. “It will
definitely be exciting during that first trip up
into the sky,” he said.
This is the second plane crash at the Iowa Falls
Municipal Airport in the last year. The first
happened July 31 last year when one plane landed on
top of another plane. There were only minor injuries
reported in that crash.
Elizabeth Isham Cory, a spokesperson for the Federal
Aviation Administration, said the National
Transportation Safety Board will be leading the
crash investigation, which could take up to one
year.
