Verla Frizzell Gray
October 25, 1916-December 4, 2010
December 11, 2010
SHAWNEE, KAN.—Verla
Frizzell Gray, 94, was born on Oct. 25, 1916, in Woodburn,
Iowa, to John Lee and Bessie Wilson Frizzell. Verla passed away on
Dec. 4, 2010, at The Sweet Life in Shawnee, Kan. Although
Alzheimer's disease had robbed Verla of her memory, her
sweet nature and gentle spirit never faltered.
Verla
grew up on a farm in Clarke County, Iowa, the oldest of five
siblings. Roy, Kenny, and Bob Frizzell and Fern Frizzell
Windland looked up to their big sister and relied on her
good counsel and sisterly support. She was proud of her
roots and took great pleasure in the very full life that
came with being part of a large and active family. She kept
her family close throughout her life, no matter what the
distance between them.
Verla's
family grew when she met Claire L. Gray, a handsome young
man from Osceola, Iowa. They married on Sept. 4, 1938.
Daughter Nancy Patricia Gray was born in April of 1945,
while Claire served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific. After
the war, the Gray family moved to Iowa Falls in northern
Iowa, where Verla worked with Claire in the brokerage and
real estate business. Together they built their dream home
on the banks above the Iowa River, enjoying family and
friends, boating in the summer and skating parties in the
winter. When Nancy left home for a job in Hawaii, Verla and
Claire enjoyed wonderful visits and, later, after Claire's
death in 1970, Verla learned to navigate the streets of San
Francisco and Kansas City while visiting Nancy. She was an
exceptional seamstress and enjoyed work at the Sewing
Machine Shop in Iowa Falls. Verla retired to Osceola, where
she cared for her mother until her death. She moved to
Kansas City in 2001. Verla was an active member of the
Methodist Church in Iowa Falls.
Verla
is survived by her daughter, Nancy Gray of Fairway, Kan.;
sister, Fern Windland of Osceola; and many nieces and
nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Claire; parents, John and Bessie Frizzell;
and brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Maurine Frizzell,
Kenneth and Margaret Frizzell, and Robert and Bettyanne
Frizzell; and brother-in-law Worth Windland.
The family wishes to thank
all of the wonderful people at The Sweet Life and Odyssey
Hospice for their unwavering care and concern. A celebration
of Veda's life was held Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the United
Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. Burial was at Union
Cemetery. Instead of flowers, the family requests
contributions to the Alzheimer's Association or another
charity of your choice.
Verla
will be dearly missed by her family and all who were
fortunate to have known her.

Dr. David Henningsen Long

January 1, 2011
LOVELAND, Colorado—It is
with great sorrow that the family of Dr. David Henningsen
Long share with you the news of his passing on Saturday,
December 25, 2010, from injuries sustained in an automobile
accident.
Dr. Long was born in Iowa
Falls to Glenn and Maude Long on October 1, 1932. He grew up
there and spent his school years in town and spent his
summers living and working on their farm outside of town.
Dave attended Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls, then
transferred to Iowa State University in Ames, where he
received his bachelor's degree. This was followed by four
years of military service with the U.S. Army Medical Corps,
where he served in Korea and also at Fitzsimmons Hospital in
Aurora, Colorado. Dr. Long stayed on in the Denver area and
earned his PhD in psychology from Denver University. This is
where he also met his wife of 48 years, Mary Ann Truax.
Following their marriage, Dave and Mary Ann moved to Tampa,
Florida, where he taught at the University of South Florida.
The next move was to the southwest, where Dr. Long taught
for eight years at Highlands University in Las Vegas, New
Mexico. It was while here and as serving as faculty sponsor
for the school's Native American Indian Club, that Dave and
Mary Ann developed a deep love and respect for our native
people's culture and which remained a strong bond for the
remainder of his life.
Dr. Long then taught at
the University of Wisconsin in Platteville, Wisconsin and
then accepted a position as chairman of Behavioral Sciences
at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas. Upon
retirement in 1999, Dave and Mary Ann finally made it back
to their beloved southwest, and moved to Loveland, Colorado,
where they enjoyed many wonderful years exploring and hiking
in the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.
Dr. Long was preceded in
death by his parents, Maude and Glenn Long; a brother, James
Long of Webster, Wisconsin; and a sister, Mary Combellick of
Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his
loving and devoted wife, Mary Ann; daughter, Kimberly Link
and her husband, Zachary of Atlanta, Georgia; son, Steven
Long and his wife, Judith of Corinna, Maine; a
granddaughter, Natalie Long of Springfield, Missouri; his
sister, Betty Heinemann of Lakewood, Colorado;
brother-in-law, Bill Truax of Denver, Colorado; as well as
15 nieces and nephews.
We also wish to
acknowledge the many friends and neighbors who have offered
love and support during this difficult time. There will be a
memorial service scheduled at a later date. It is the
family's request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be
made in his name to the Native American Medicine Wheel in
Wyoming at Friends of the Medicine Wheel, P.O. Box 21734,
Cheyenne, WY 82009.
