Helen Richtsmeier
May 12, 1926-April 1, 2010
April 10, 2010
IOWA CITY—Helen Pappas Gough Richtsmeier, 83, passed away on
Thursday, April 1, 2010, at the Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab
Center in Coralville.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday,
April 7, at the New Horizons United Methodist Church in
Coralville. Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville was in charge
of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be directed to the Ackley Heritage Center.
Helen was born on May 12,
1926, to Tony and Zoe Pappas of Mason City. She grew up
there and graduated from the Mason City High School in 1944.
She attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a
Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education in 1949. She
married Earl F. Gough of Iowa City in 1950. She and Earl
moved to Iowa Falls in 1954 and proceeded to raise their
four children. Helen taught physical education in the Iowa
Falls High School from 1962 to 1989. She married Merle
Richtsmeier in 1987 and moved to Ackley. In September of
2007, Helen moved to Coralville where she resided until her
death. That is the
time frame of Helen's life but in no way does it describe
her life. She was a daughter of Greek immigrants and proud
of her heritage. She was someone who worked two to three
jobs to put herself through college. She was someone who
continued that work ethic to support her children. She was
someone who was always there for her children through good
and bad, but making sure they always took responsibility for
their own actions. She was someone who family and friends
could call day or night for help. She wasn’t the most
craft-oriented person as her friends could attest to, but
she did learn to knit later in life, though only simple
items such as washcloths.
Helen had the most awesome sense of humor and
people of all ages loved being with her. She loved
“adventures” which she usually did with her friend and
cohort, Sandy. She volunteered for numerous activities. She
worked very hard for the Ackley Heritage Center with her
buddy, Marie. She picked grapes for her friend’s winery and
was greatly disappointed when she found out she didn’t get
to stomp on them. She was a very honest person and she
definitely spoke her mind. You never asked her a question
unless you were sure you wanted to hear the answer. She was
the most loyal and trusted friend, but if lied to or
deceived, she could be fierce. Helen was strongly religious
but in her own quiet way. And above all, she will be so
greatly missed by family and all her friends.
Helen is survived by her four children, Ann
(George) Sullivan of Coralville and their children, Shane
(Carolyn) Iverson and son, Jackson of Bethel, Alaska and
Eleni (Robert) Riggs of Holly Springs, North Carolina;
Philip (Cindy) Gough and their son, Tyler, all of Margate,
Florida; Michael (Debbie) Gough of Copperas Cove, Texas and
their children, Dana (Rebecca) Gough of Kyle, Texas and
Brittin Gough of Austin, Texas; and William (Patty) Gough
and their children, Stephen and Hailey Gough, all of Port
St. Lucie, Florida; her three sisters, Bessie Alukos of
Evanston, Illinois, Harriet Bohac and Olga Dogan, both of
Chicago, Illinois; and her two brothers, George Pappas of
Pontiac, Michigan and Gus Pappas of Madison, Wisconsin.
Helen was preceded in
death by her parents; husbands; sisters, Florence Chrysikos
and Ann Hrones; and a son-in-law, Jack Iverson.

Hulda S. Zierke

April 7, 2010
HUBBARD—Hulda S. Zierke, 98, of Hubbard, died on Friday,
April 2, 2010, at the Hubbard Care Center.
She was in Hospice Care at
the Hubbard Care Center after release from the Ellsworth
Hospital, Iowa Falls. She succumbed to renal failure while
experiencing Alzheimer’s deterioration for the past 13
years. She lived in her own home for eight of those years
after the death of her husband, Gus and became a HCC
resident 5 1/2 years ago.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, April 5, at the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Hubbard, with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Rueger
officiating. Burial was in the Hubbard Cemetery. The Boeke
Funeral Home in Hubbard, was in charge of the arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran
Church or the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Iowa, West
Des Moines, Iowa.
Hulda was born on January 24, 1912, to Henry and Louise
(Goebel) Schnormeier at the “old place” farm southeast of
Hubbard. She attended grade school at the “Mud Swamp” rural
school and worked at home and as a “hired girl” for many
area families. She met her husband, Gus Zierke while working
for the Gus Oberhokamp family when he came to visit. They
were married on her birthday in 1938 during a terrible
blizzard which almost cancelled the event and prevented many
friends from attending. They rented a farm west of Hubbard
owned by August Gelhaus until 1947 when they purchased a
farm southeast of Hubbard from Ben Eller. Two children were
born to this union, Arlen in 1941 and Lorraine in 1944. They
lived on the farm until 1981 when they retired from farming
and moved to her parents’ house in Hubbard.
Hulda was a lifelong member of the St. John’s Lutheran
Church in Hubbard. She was baptized by Pastor Maas,
confirmed by Pastor Schliepsiek and married by Pastor
Schliepsiek. She and Gus were faithful church attendees and
spent a good part of their retirement visiting “shut-in”
members of the congregation.
Hulda will be remembered by family and friends for her love
of cooking (her homemade buns were outstanding), sewing (she
would patch a pair of jeans while you waited), gardening
(especially flowers) and her unfailing willingness to do for
others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus; her daughter,
Lorraine; her parents, Henry and Louise; her sister, Esther;
and brothers, Martin and Otto.
She is survived by her son and wife, Dr. Arlen and Sana
Zierke of Hubbard; and son-in-law, Larry Zoske and wife, Jan
and their son, Brent; grandchildren, Eric (Steph) Zierke,

Helen Marie Dass
December 24, 1924-April 10, 2010
April 14, 2010
IOWA FALLS—Helen Marie Dass, passed away peacefully at the
Ellsworth Municipal Hospital on Saturday, April 10, 2010.
Helen was the second
daughter born to Charles and (Mary Hoelscher) Dass, on
December 24, 1924, on a farm south of Iowa Falls in Hardin
County. She attended the Ellis #5 Country School.
Helen loved the farm and
everything that went with it. When there was no school she
and her sisters, Jeanette and Arlene would help pick corn
(by hand) and she had chores to do also, like help mow the
lawn and gather eggs, which she loved doing until she would
get pecked while reaching for the eggs. She walked beans and
cornrows for button weeds and cockle burrs. When the folks
moved to town she didn’t know what she would do and wasn’t
happy. That’s when her brother-in-law and sister told her
she could move out to the farm with them. She loved it and
was happy she could drive a John Deere tractor but didn’t
want anything to do with
cars. Later she had to move to town with Jeanette when her
brother-in-law passed away.
She started painting pictures, arranging flowers and she was
always a sports fan. She bowled for 50 years or more. She
liked football, baseball and basketball. Lots of her friends
called her to find out what time and what station and what
teams were playing whom. She was a great fan of the
Twins/Cubs and Iowa. Another love was cards; she enjoyed
playing five hundred, bridge, pepper, rummy and dominos, and
of course TV.
Helen had many friends and couldn’t wait for her 85th
birthday. She got more than 170 cards and telephone calls
that her sister would take for her. One of her good friends
bought some soup bowls, which tickled Helen because of the
size of them, she got a big laugh, so he bought Helen two
bowls and a large can of soup. When she opened that package
she got tickled all over again.
She liked shows like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Shirley Temple,
and all about Costello and The Rite brothers. She used to go
to Buckeye, sit on the planks and watch silent movies. Then
she quit that and watched TV, sitting at home in an easy
chair.
When she would go to the Rose Bowl with her sister and
husband to visit her sister, Arlene and her husband would
get Carrol, her brother-in-law, to bowl with her and laugh
the next day because he would be stiff and sore.
Jeanette tried to teach her how to make pie crust, but when
she didn’t get enough flour on her hands and it stuck to
them, she threw it down and said forget it. She was a good
cook but didn’t want to bake.
She is survived by two sisters, Jeanette White of Iowa Falls
and Arlene Hughes of Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death
by her parents and two brothers-in-law.
