ALDEN—Rhonda L. Davis, 53, of Alden, died on Tuesday,
September 1, 2009, at the Hampton Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, September 4, at the Immanuel Memorial UCC in
Alden, with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Popejoy. The
Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls was in charge of the
arrangements.
Rhonda Leigh Davis, was
born on May 26, 1956, the daughter of Nathan and Norma
(Rash) Hunt. She graduated from the Alden High School in
1974. On October 17, 1979, Rhonda was united in marriage to
William Davis at the UCC Church in Buckeye. She had been a
waitress at the Country Kitchen.
Rhonda is survived by her
husband, William; two sons, Chad (Ashley) Davis of
Blairsburg and Tony (Melissa) Davis of Alden; a daughter,
Stacie (Darren) Davis of Webster City; six grandchildren;
three brothers, Steve (Linda) Hunt of Alden, Michael (TJ)
Hunt of Alden and Douglas (Becky) Hunt of Iowa Falls; two
sisters, Barbara (Steven) Gardner of Forks, Washington and
Pam (Lance) Hunt of Dows; five sisters-in-law, Joanne (Dan)
Withers of Webster City, Kathy (Rick) Silvest of Iowa Falls,
LaVon (Jeff) Schwebke of Lincoln, Nebraska, Debbie (Mark)
Dow of Clarion and Tracie (Josh) Bolhuis of Dows; and two
brothers-in-law, Rick Davis of Dows and James (Ronda) Davis
of Alden.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; grandparents; a sister-in-law; a niece; and
her mother-in-law.

IOWA FALLS—Eunice Jutting, 77, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Thursday, September 3, 2009, at the Scenic Manor, Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services will be
held at 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, September 8, at the Linn’s
Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel, with Pastor Harry Imlay
officiating. A time of visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m.,
on Monday, at the funeral home. Private family burial will
be in the Northlawn Memory Garden Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The
Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted
with the arrangements.
Eunice May Shomshor, was
born on May 27, 1932, at the family home outside of
Scribner, Nebraska. She attended the Scribner Community
Schools, graduating from the Scribner High School with the
class of 1950. On October 31, 1950, Eunice was united in
marriage to Charles Junior Jutting at the Lutheran Church in
Waterloo. To this union three children were born, Janet,
Curtis and Sherilyn. Eunice was a housewife, mother and
homemaker and had worked for the Iowa Falls School Lunch
program at West Grade School and the General Publishing Co.,
Iowa Falls.
She was a member of the
Lutheran Church in Nebraska and the First Christian Church,
Iowa Falls.
Eunice Jutting is survived
by her children, Janet Murillo of Des Moines, Curtis Jutting
of Newton and Sherilyn Everman of Ackley; five
grandchildren, Michaelle Boetger, Robert Boyd, Matthew Boyd,
Calvin Jutting and Brock Jutting; and three
great-grandchildren, Logan Boyd, Landon Jutting and Kristina
Boyd.
She was preceded in death
by her parents.

Reformed Church, with burial in the Bethel Reformed

IOWA FALLS—A memorial service in honor of William T. Kearney
will be held on Sunday, September 20, at the Boat Club in
Iowa Falls, from 2-4:00 p.m.
Mr. Kearney passed away on
Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar
Rapids. Mr. Kearney served as the superintendent of the
Alden schools for 22 years.

HUBBARD—Phyllis E. Klemme, 77, of Hubbard, died on Friday,
September 4, 2009, at the Israel Family Hospice House in
Ames.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, September 8, at the Salem United Methodist
Church in Hubbard, with the Rev. Brian McNamara officiating.
Burial was in the Hubbard Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home
in Hubbard, was in charge of the arrangements.
Phyllis Elisabeth (Pieper)
Klemme, was born on March 22, 1932, in Ross. She was the
youngest of three children born to the Rev. Fred and Amanda
(Bier) Pieper. While growing up, Phyllis lived in Belle
Plain, Sharon, Renwick and then Hubbard, graduating from the
Hubbard High School with the class of 1950. In 1952, she
graduated from the two-year teacher course at Westmar
College in LeMars. In 1949, Phyllis was trained by Lydia
Dubberke as a switchboard operator and worked at the local
telephone company part time for several years. From
1952-1955, she was employed by the Iowa Falls Public School
System as a sixth-grade teacher and also taught sixth grade
one year at Hubbard.
On November 22, 1954,
Phyllis was united in marriage to Robert Klemme in Hubbard.
They spent their entire married life in the Hubbard area.
Together they farmed and operated Klemme Trucking. She
enjoyed driving, whether it be the combine, the ambulance or
the school bus and loved to travel.
She was an active member
of the Salem United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday
School, sang in the choir and served on many different
committees and offices. Her faith remained strong, even as
her health failed. She had a great concern for other people
and always enjoyed visiting. Through the years she kept busy
with many activities, including sewing, knitting, baking and
reading. She was well-known for her sense of humor and
always loved a good joke.
Those remaining to cherish
her memory include her husband, Robert of Hubbard; three
daughters, Gayle and husband, Jim Faris of Hubbard, Brenda
and husband, Frank Eley of Tustin, California and Stacy and
husband, Wade Brinkmeyer of Hubbard; seven grandchildren,
Amber (Nathan) Wiertzema, Austin (Amy) Faris, Sean and Evan
Eley and Shelby, Grant and Tyler Brinkmeyer; four
great-grandchildren, Madison and Paige Wiertzema, and Logan
and Hailey Faris; one sister, Miriam Rosene of Princeton,
Illinois; one brother, Melvin Pieper of Manson; along with
many other relatives and friends.
Phyllis was preceded in
death by her parents; and one infant brother.

BLOOMINGTON, Minnesota—Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Odell
Hoiekvam Johnson, 92, passed away on Friday, September 4,
2009, as the result of a fall.
Memorial services were
held on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at the Peace Lutheran Church
in Bloomington. Interment will be held at a later date in
the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Odell was originally from
Iowa Falls, graduating with the Iowa Falls High School class
of 1935. He worked for a few years for his dad who operated
Highwood Inn. He attended Ellsworth Junior College and Iowa
State College. While at Ellsworth in 1940, he was accepted
in the Civilian Pilot Training program and received his
private pilot’s license.

GENEVA—Douglas D. Thomas, 62, of Geneva, died on Tuesday,
September 8, 2009, at the Franklin General Hospital in
Hampton.
Funeral services will be
held at 4:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 12, at the United
Methodist Church in Geneva, with burial in the Lindenwood
Cemetery, Geneva. No visitation is planned. The Sietsema
Funeral Home in Ackley is in charge of the arrangements.
Douglas Donald Thomas, was
born on April 12, 1947 in Hampton, the son of F. Lester and
Ethel (Johnson) Thomas. He attended the Ackley-Geneva High
School. Doug was united in marriage to Connie Homan on May
22, 1966 in Ackley. He served in the U.S. Army from
1966-1968 as a combat engineer in the 10th Engineering
Battalion, stationed in Germany. Upon his return home, Doug
and Connie settled in Geneva and he continued to farm with
his father. Doug and Connie moved to the family farm in
1977. Later Doug started a trucking company, which he owned
and operated until his passing.
For eight years, Doug
enjoyed coaching his sons’ Geneva Little League baseball
teams. Doug was also a member of the United Methodist Church
in Geneva and the Dumont American Legion.
Doug is survived by his
wife, Connie; three sons, Chad and wife, Manda of Wiota,
Jeremy and wife, Alexis of Macomb, Illinois and Dustin and
wife, Shauna of West Des Moines; a granddaughter, Hannah Jo
of Wiota; and two brothers, F. Lonnie Thomas of Albuquerque,
New Mexico and David Thomas of Alden.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Thomas.

ALDEN—Wallace "Wally" Hoversten, 74, of Alden, died on

Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alden, with burial in the Pleasant
Hill Cemetery, rural Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in

Wallace "Wally" Wray
Hoversten, was born on June 6, 1935 in Alden, the son of
Truman and Bessie (Weaver) Hoversten. He graduated from the
Alden High School. Wally was united in marriage to Shirley
Jean Diemer in 1956. He worked at Prestress Concrete,
retiring in 1994.
Wally enjoyed going to
auctions and spending time with his granddaughters and
great-grandsons.
Wally is survived by his
daughter, Rochel Hoversten of Iowa Falls; two sons, Rodney
and Vicki Hoversten of Iowa Falls and Rick Hoversten of
Alden; grandchildren, Heather and Jimmy Reed of Iowa Falls,
Nicole and Matt Gregoire of Alden, Tracy Ites of Iowa Falls,
Travis Greenfield of Iowa Falls, Jared Hoversten of
California, Megan and Russ Love of Iowa Falls, Amber Elliott
and Kelli Rout, both of Webster City; nine
great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty and Ralph Richtsmeier,
Evelyn and Tom Kinstle, Verna Scott and Jay Jacobsen, Delia
and Maynard Rockow and Fran and Darrell Rout; brothers,
Merle, Maurice "Butch", Ron and Dave Hoversten; and a

HUBBARD—Martha Kruetzmann, 101, formerly of Iowa Falls, died
on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at the Hubbard Care Center
in Hubbard.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, September 12, at the Zion
United Church of Christ in Hubbard, with the Rev. Nancy
Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Hubbard
Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard is in charge of
the arrangements.
Martha Kruetzmann, was
born on April 2, 1908 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She was born
the daughter of Peter and Lydia (Bierhaus) Wigand. She
received a good Christian education and attended public
school in rural Wisconsin. On May 28, 1928, she was united
in marriage to the Rev. Arthur Kruetzmann in Newton,
Wisconsin. She spent 40 years as a minister’s wife in
Kansas, Alleman, Hubbard and Nashua. They retired to Iowa
Falls in the fall of 1968. Martha lived in Iowa Falls until
she moved and became a resident of the Hubbard Care Center
in Hubbard.
Martha worked alongside
her husband in all aspects of the church. She will be
remembered for the love of her family, music and flowers.
Those thankful for having
shared her life include three daughters, Eileen Kruse and
husband, Ernest of Ackley, Evelyn Reifschneider and husband,
Mervin of Hubbard and Edith Fichtner and husband, Royce of
Marshalltown; eight grandchildren; fourteen
great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; along
with many other relatives and friends.
Martha was preceded in
death by her parents; husband, Rev. Arthur Kruetzmann;
siblings, Clara Strassburger, Esther Feld, Lydia Scherry,
Elsie Mattfeld, Carl Wigand and Paul Wigand; and one younger
brother.

Memorial UCC in Alden, with inurnment in the Alden Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa
Falls is in charge of the arrangements.
Lois “Geri” Bessman, was
born on May 26, 1925 in Williams, the daughter of Charles
and Gladys (McIntire) Akers. She graduated from the Alden
High School. Geri was married to Ernest Beecher from 1944 to
1976, and after his death she was married to Murl Bessman
from 1979 to 2001.
Geri is survived by her
daughter, Sonja Hickey of Sequim, Washington; a son, Douglas
Beecher of Lompoc, California; a step-daughter, Nancy Shaner
of Brighton, Michigan; five grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; first husband, Ernest Beecher of 32 years;
second husband, Murl Bessman of 22 years; three sisters,
Arlene Wiley, Verdell Greene and Gloria Knott; and one
brother, Clive (Shorty) Akers.

"Ted" Joseph Miller, 41, of West Des Moines, passed away on
Friday, September 11, 2009.
A celebration of Ted's
life was held on Monday, September 14, at the Hamilton's
Funeral Home in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial was
held on Tuesday, September 15, at the St Francis of Assisi
Catholic Church.
Ted was born to Richard
and Doris Miller on January 30, 1968 in Iowa Falls. He
graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1986 and the
University of Northern Iowa in 1991, with a Bachelor's
Degree in Accounting and Economics. He passed his CPA exam
the same year. In 1991, he started his career as an
assistant controller for the Excellence in Training Corp. in
Urbandale. Ted was united in marriage to Julie Buresh on
June 12, 1993 in Iowa Falls. In 1996, he began a career with
Ernst & Young in the State and Local Tax Division.
Ted was an avid reader and
terrible golfer. He skied, wrestled, played racquetball and
was an Iowa Hawkeye football fan. But most of all, he cared
for and loved deeply his wife and children. His family was
most important in his life and they will miss his love and
affection.
Ted is survived by his
loving wife, Julie and two wonderful children, Jessica (11)
and Jacob (8). He is also survived by his mother, Doris of
Iowa Falls; sister, Anne (Carl) of Eldridge; brothers, John
(Elaine) of Des Moines and Jeff (Brenda) of West Des Moines;
and his mother and father-in-law, Kathy and Jerry Buresh of
Iowa Falls. He will be missed by his family and many
friends.
Ted was preceded in death
by his father, Richard E. Miller; and older brother, Steven
W. Miller.

ACKLEY—William “Bill” A. Shugar, 89, of Ackley, died on
Saturday, September 12, 2009, at the Covenant Medical Center
in Waterloo, following a fall.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, September 15, at the St. John’s UCC in Ackley,
with burial in the Oakwood Cemetery, Ackley. The Sietsema
Funeral Home in Ackley was in charge of the arrangements.
Bill was born on March 3,
1920 in Ackley, the son of John and Gertje (Rotgers) Shugar.
He attended and graduated from the Ackley High School in
1939. He married Dorathy Rigbers on June 1, 1941, at her
parents’ home. They had three children. He enjoyed farming,
driving the milk truck and clerking at the Ackley Sale Barn.
He owned and operated Wm. Shugar trucking from 1964-2000.
As a member of the St.
John’s United Church of Christ he founded the Men’s Chorus.
He was a 50-year Mason in the Fountain Lodge No. 219. In
1989, he started The Music Makers, playing at nursing homes,
parades and special events until 2000. He also taught square
dancing.
Bill is survived by his
wife, Dorathy; daughters, Marilyn (Harvey) Goracke of
Philipsburg, Kansas and Carolyn (John) Ford of Humboldt; a
son, Larry (Pamela) of Ackley; five grandchildren, Sharon
(Dave) McRae of Cedar Falls, Jennifer (Dean) Eyler of
Plymouth, Minnesota, Amanda (Trent) Winters of Iowa Falls,
Samantha (Josh) Carpenter of Iowa Falls and John Shugar of
Ackley; and 10 great-grandchildren, Carson, Jenna, Cullen
and Liam McRae, Luke and Lauren Eyler, Mikaylan, Kadynce and
Kaleb Winters and Jordyn Carpenter.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; three sisters, Helen Yount, Bernice Teeter
and Hazel Teske; and several nieces and nephews.

ROCKWALL, Texas—Sandra Kay "Nana" Nicholson, 69, of
Rockwall, Texas, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2009,
after a brief but hard-fought battle with lung cancer.
A memorial service
celebrating the life of a remarkable and loved woman will be
held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 19, at the First
United Methodist Church, Rowlett, Texas, under the direction
of the Rest Haven Funeral Home-Rowlett Chapel. The family
will receive friends after the service at the Nicholson
residence. Contributions in memory of Sandy may be made to
the Dallas Academy Foundation, Dallas, Texas.
Sandra was born on
February 20, 1940 in Boone, Iowa. Sandra graduated from the
Algona High School in 1958 and attended Iowa State
University where she met her husband, John A. Nicholson.
They were married in August of 1960.
Sandra was a member of the
First United Methodist Church of Rowlett and the Rowlett
Reviews Book Club. She was a talented artist. She went to
Europe several times and enjoyed traveling with her husband
and family and especially her grandchildren. Sandra planned
the trip of a lifetime for her children and grandchildren
when she and her husband hosted them on an Alaskan Cruise
last year. Her greatest joy was earning the name “Nana” and
her greatest achievements were her grandchildren. She was a
passionate fan at every football game, soccer match and
dance competition. She set the goals high for the
grandchildren and reminded them of those goals frequently.
Sandra is survived by her
husband, Jack Nicholson; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer
and Brad Hulme; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Jana
Nicholson; grandchildren, Braeden, Aspen, Savannah, Jay,
Ashton and Luke; sister, Judie Wiskus; and numerous nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Kenneth and Tressa Strahorn; her brother,
Fred Strahorn; and her daughter, Jacqueline Ann.

WASHBURN—Annie L. Betts, 83, of Reinbeck, formerly of Iowa
Falls, died on Saturday, September 19, 2009, in the
emergency room of the Covenant Medical Center.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, September 21, at the Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup
Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with inurnment later in
the Garden Of Memories Cemetery, all in Waterloo.
She was born on December
12, 1925 in Dike, daughter of Klaus and Annie Eiklenborg
Muller. She married Richard A. Betts on September 2, 1950,
in Cedar Falls. Mrs. Betts and her husband owned and
operated Betts Painting & Decorating in Iowa Falls for 10
years until closing due to a fire in 1977. She was later
employed with the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls for 10
years.
Survivors include her
husband; two daughters, Doris Ann (Ralph) Phelps of Coon
Rapids and Denise (Randy) Retleff of Nevada; a
daughter-in-law, Marilyn Betts of Waterloo; four
grandchildren, Jennifer (Phil) Menard and Jessalyn Phelps,
both of Coon Rapids, Bryce Pieper of Johnston and Nicole
Pieper of Nevada; a great-granddaughter, Virginia Phelps of
Coon Rapids; two step-grandchildren; five
step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Andrew (Lois)
Muller of Cedar Falls, Merlyn (Kathryn) Muller of Aplington
and Wilbur (Joy) Muller of Grundy Center; and a sister,
Grace (Alvin) Stahl of Grundy Center.
She was preceded in death
by a son, David; a daughter, Debra Betts; and a brother,
Fred Muller.

SOMERSET, TEXAS—David Gordon Schriever, died on Sunday,
September 20, 2009, at the Audie L. Murphy Veteran’s
Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He was 77 years
old.
There will be a memorial
service on his behalf at the Ackley United Methodist Church
on Saturday, October 10, at 10:30 a.m.
Dave was born on June 10,
1932, the son of Fredrick Schriever and Dora (Yost)
Schriever in Allison, Iowa. He went to school in Iowa Falls
and in 1949, enlisted in the Navy during the Korean
Conflict. After returning to Iowa Falls he was united in
marriage to Grace Luann Chaplin in 1952. They divorced in
1985 and he relocated to Somerset, Texas, where he resided
until his death. Dave was a carpenter and worked at various
construction-related jobs during his lifetime.
Dave is survived by one
son, Lloyd (Ann) Schriever of Ackley; two brothers, William
(Shirley) Schriever of Marquette Heights, Illinois and
Richard (Deloris) Schriever of Poteet, Texas.
Dave was preceded in death
by his parents; three brothers, Carl, Elmer and Fred
Schriever; a sister, Hendricka; and a half-brother, Howard
Bennett.

BRADFORD—Edward Christian Mutschler, passed on Tuesday,
September 22, 2009, at his home in Bradford, after a lengthy
battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, September 26, at the St.
Peter’s Church, rural Geneva. The Cedar Memorial Westside
Chapel of Cedar Rapids, is in charge of the arrangements.
Ed was born on December 1,
1933, to Fred and Maria Sailer Mutschler on the family farm
outside of Geneva. He graduated from the Geneva High School.
He enlisted in the Army. After he was discharged, he took
classes for carpentry and masonry which he used throughout
his life. He married Ellan Barzze in 1957. They had two
children, Laurie and Mariea and later divorced. In 1975 he
married Mavis Collins.
He is survived by
daughters, Laurie Sunken of Tyler, Texas and Mariea Schnor
of Fairbank, Tami Horton of Boulder, Colorado and Ina Rae
Collins of Alden; sons, Dennis Trimble of Franklinton,
Louisiana, Lynn of Waterloo, Brian Collins of Des Moines and
Kevin Collins of Hampton; sisters, Freda Emerson of
Sacramento, California and Anna Mae Wiekert of Iowa Falls;
brother, Richard Mutschler of La Crosse, Wisconsin; 16
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; both wives; brothers, Elmer, Lester, Marvin
and James; and sister, Dorothy Dohlman.

ELDORA—Delbert E. Rogers, 76, of Eldora, died at his home on
Friday, September 25, 2009, while under the care of Iowa
Hospice.
A Mass of Christian Burial
was held on Monday, September 28, at the St. Mary’s Catholic
Church in Eldora, with Father Paul Baldwin officiating.
Burial followed in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in
Eldora. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora was in charge
of the arrangements.
Delbert Eugene Rogers, was
born on April 26, 1933, at his parents’ home in Eldora, son
of Edwin and Anna (Dole) Rogers. He was raised in Eldora and
on June 8, 1957, married Deloris Ann Otto at the St. Mary’s
Catholic Church and they made their home in Eldora. Delbert
worked a short time as a mechanic for Kuhlman Chevrolet in
Hubbard and then drove a truck several years for United
Suppliers of Eldora before working as director of
transportation for the Eldora-New Providence School System
for 21 years. He retired from the school system in 1995.
Delbert also volunteered several years pulling the Eldora
Tram, taking area nursing home residents around town and to
the Pine Lake State Park.
Delbert continued to use
his mechanical skills working on tractors of all colors,
even though his favorite was green. He also loved to hunt
and fish, but his greatest joy came from helping out his
families and friends with whatever they needed. He was a
member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Eldora.
He is survived by his
bride of 52 years, Deloris; children, Tom and Lori Rogers of
Des Moines, Deb and Tom Priske of Eldora, Mike and Kelli
Rogers of Eldora, Mary and Dale Graffunder of Eldora and Ed
and Jamie Rogers of Des Moines; by nine grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents.

EASTON, KANSAS—Father Neal K. Stull, 52, of Easton, Kansas,
formerly of Grundy Center, died on Sunday, September 27,
2009, at the home of his sister, Melody and Tim Hoy, while
under the care of the Iowa River Hospice.
Visitation will be held
from 4-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, October 7, at the Holy
Family Parish, St. Gabriel Catholic Church, rural Reinbeck,
with The Rosary being recited at 4:00 p.m. and a wake vigil
service at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held
at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 8, at St. Gabriel, with
burial to follow in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in
Grundy Center. There will be a memorial mass on Friday,
October 9, at 1:00 p.m., at the St. Lawrence Parish in
Easton, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be directed to
the St. Lawrence parish, Easton, Kansas or to the Society of
Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity, Robstown, Texas.
Neal was born on September
24, 1957 in Grundy Center, son of Don and Loretta (Connell)
Stull. He graduated from the Grundy Center High School in
1977 and the University of Iowa in 1983. He attended St.
Phillips Seminary in Toronto, Canada and received his Master
of Divinity from the Holy Apostles College and Seminary in
Cromwell, Connecticut. During the time he lived in Corpus
Christi, Texas, he was an active member of the cathedral and
sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Knights of
Columbus. Neil was ordained into the priesthood on June 29,
2002, at the Corpus Christi Cathedral into the order of the
Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT).
He served as the pastor at
the St. Monica’s Parish in Houston, Texas and was most
recently the pastor at the St. Lawrence and St. Joseph of
the Valley in Easton, Kansas. In 2005, Neal had the
opportunity to serve communion with Pope John Paul II at the
Vatican during a Midnight Mass. He also had the privilege of
serving communion at Yankee Stadium for Pope Benedict XVI.
During his priesthood, he
was active in many youth groups as he had a passion for
working with young people. He made several trips to Mexico
City to help with a school and spent time with children at
the Indian reservation in North Dakota, helping them make
rosary beads. Benedict, his black Lab, was given his name
based on a contest Neal organized with the youth group. Neal
was an avid sports fan, being particularly fond of the
Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He regularly attended
local sporting events in the communities where he served.
Neal is survived by his
mother, Loretta of Eldora; sisters, Shelley Stull (Frank)
Webb of Cincinnati, Ohio, Melody (Tim) Hoy of Eldora and
Tamara Evans of Seattle, Washington; and nieces, Ariel and
Elizabeth Hoy.
Preceding him in death was
his father, Donald on November 2, 2001.

ACKLEY—Woodrow Wilson Heitland, 96, of Ackley, died on
Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at the Presbyterian Village in
Ackley.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, October 2, at the St. John’s UCC in Ackley, with
burial in the Oakwood Cemetery, Ackley. Military rites were
provided by the Elliott-Keninger Post No. 252 of Ackley. The
Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley was in charge of the
arrangements.
Woodrow Wilson Heitland,
son of Henry H. and Tina (Bleeker) Heitland, was born on
January 8, 1913, at the home farm south of Ackley. He
received christening and baptism on October 2, 1913, at the
Evangelical and Reformed Church at Abbott, Iowa, by the Rev.
J.V. Knoll. When the Abbott church closed, he attended the
St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church (now St. John’s
United Church of Christ) in Ackley. He joined the church in
1945 and was a faithful member and served on the church
council. He attended country school in Etna Township
District School No. 6 and graduated from the Ackley High
School in 1930.
In 1942, he married
Bernice Sinning at Bethany, Missouri. They have two
children, Richard at Austin, Texas and Kathleen at Palm
Coast, Florida. Woodrow was a veteran of World War II,
service with the 398th Bomb Group with the 8th Army Air
Corps in Europe during the Normandy Invasion, Northern
France, Ardennes and Central Europe. Following the war Woody
and Bernice farmed south of Ackley.
He was a member of the
Farm Bureau and served in the Etna Township ASCS committee.
In 1977, they retired from farming and moved to Ackley. He
was a member of the Elliott-Keninger American Legion Post
No. 252 for 68 years, Ackley-Geneva Lions Club and the
Ackley Country Club.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; four brothers, Jacob, Harry, John and
Elwood; and two sisters, Grace (Mrs. Richard Cobie) and
Adele (Mrs. Romaine Catlett).
He is survived by his
wife, Bernice; sister, Midge (Mrs. Harris Vietor) of Omaha,
Nebraska; a son, Richard; grandsons, Michael and Joseph;
daughter, Kathleen (Mrs. Jay Allen); grandsons, Nathan and
Evan; granddaughter, Tami; eight great-grandchildren;
brother and sisters-in-law; and many relatives and family
friends.

age 66, of Radcliffe, died on Tuesday, September 29, 2009,
at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

held on Saturday, October 3, at 10:30 a.m., at the Our
Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe. Gloria's cremated
remains will be interred in the Radcliffe Cemetery. Friends
may call at the Church in Radcliffe, on Friday, October 2,
from 4-7:00 p.m.
Gloria Mae (Bauer)
Peterson, was born on May 26, 1943, to Lawrence and Arlyne
(Hilton) Bauer in Waterloo. She graduated from the Brandon
High School in 1961. She then attended the State Teacher's
College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls, graduating with a B.A.
Degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Music.
Gloria began her teaching
career in Marshalltown as a kindergarten teacher. While in
Marshalltown, she participated in community theater and
church activities. After being introduced to Laverne
Peterson on a blind date, by "Pete's" brother and
sister-in-law, Don and Josette Peterson, Gloria and Laverne
were united in marriage on May 24, 1974, at the Elim
Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. They resided on the
Peterson family farm north of Radcliffe and west of Buckeye.
Gloria began teaching
kindergarten in Radcliffe in 1976, where she taught until
retiring in 2005. Two daughters were born to this union,
Sara Elizabeth and Kathryn Emily.
Gloria was a member of the
Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday
School, directed the Cherub Choir and participated in the
ELCA Women's Group. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary
and a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi.
She enjoyed crafts,
watching her daughters' sports activities, school plays, her
wonderful grandsons, Pete and Bruce Coburn, each of her many
"kids" she taught and her family and friends. Once you were
a part of Gloria's life, you were always a part of Gloria.
She is survived by her
daughters, Sara Peterson of Ames and Katy Coburn (Bryce) of
Radcliffe; her sister, Marsha Sizemore of Cedar Rapids;
brothers-in-law, Bob (Helen) Peterson of Charles City and
Don (Josette) Peterson; sister-in-law, Betty (Denny) Harris
of Marshalltown; as well as many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Laverne Peterson in 1997; her parents,
Lawrence and Arlyne Bauer; her sister, Betty Forsyth;
father-in-law, Lawrence Peterson and mother-in-law, Marie
Peterson.
Memorial contributions may
be directed to the family or the Hubbard-Radcliffe
Elementary School and will be used for scholarships for
preschoolers who can't afford tuition.

NORTH MANKATO, Minnesota—Roxanne Kleen, 49, passed away on
Tuesday, September 29, 2009, in North Mankato, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, October 3, at the Belgrade Avenue United
Methodist Church in North Mankato. Roxanne was the wife of
Tom Kleen and daughter-in-law of Jim and Sylvia Kleen. The
Kleen family lived in Iowa Falls in the ‘60s-’70s when Jim
was the Farmer’s Co-op Manager.
