March 11, 2009
ALDEN—Henry "Bud" James Daum, 85, of Alden, died on Friday,

Memorial services will be
held at 11:00
a.m., on Saturday, March 14, at the Immanuel Memorial UCC in

cremated and inurnment of the ashes will be in the family
gravesite in the Buckeye Cemetery. Memorials will go to the
Immanuel Memorial UCC or can be directed to the Hospice of North
Iowa or the American Cancer Society.
In accordance with his
wishes, Henry "Bud" Daum took his final breath in his home
on the farmstead in Buckeye Township, where he was born. He
died from complications of cancer. Several family members
and neighbors were present at the time.
Henry was born on January 5,
1924, on the family farm southwest of Buckeye in the middle
of a snow storm. He attended the Buckeye No. 8 Country School
and graduated eighth grade from the Buckeye Independent
School District. He graduated from the Radcliffe High School in
the class of 1941. Marrying Lois Mae Jensen on Christmas Eve
in 1944 was the best decision of his life. This was toward
the end of World War II and Henry had been drafted by the
Army. Lois was manager of the Western Union Office in Iowa
Falls. Henry served in the Signal Corps and was a member of
the occupation forces in Tokyo, Japan, following World War
II. Upon his discharge from the Army, Bud returned to Iowa
to operate the family farm that was originally purchased in
1910.
Together Henry and Lois operated and purchased the
family farm. Their farm operation included crops of corn,
hay, oats and soybeans. They had a herd of Black Angus cows
and raised feeder cattle, farrowed sows and raised feeder
pigs and had a flock of chickens that were raised from baby
chicks for fryers and layers. The eggs were sold to
Schager’s Produce in Alden. Many Saturday nights were a trip
to Iowa Falls for groceries and eating out at the Princess
Cafe or Park N’ Eat. Henry and Lois had two daughters,
Josette Kay born in 1947 and Jeanine Lee born in 1950. In
the early 1970s they replaced the original farm house with a
ranch-style house. Bud retired from farming in 1986. He and
Lois continued to live on the farm and were able to enjoy
their retirement. They spent 15 winters in Arizona.
They
took up golfing, were the Couples League Champions in 1986
at the Radcliffe Friendly Fairways, and Bud got a hole in
one in Arizona in 1988. Bud was able to water ski until the
age of 65 when they went to the Lake of the Ozarks. Bud
enjoyed driving around in his pickup truck, stopping at
neighbors and visiting at the co-ops. At the center of the
family was the Peace Church in Buckeye, now Immanuel
Memorial UCC in Alden. Henry is the longest continuous
member of this church, joining through confirmation in May
of 1937. Henry was a lifelong member of the American Legion
in Radcliffe, VFW of Buckeye and the Iowa Falls Elks Club
B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1674.
Henry was preceded in
death by his parents, Henry and Minnie (Peglow) Daum; infant
brother, Don R. Daum; and daughter, Jeanine (Mrs. Stewart
Iverson Jr.) who died in 1999.
Henry is survived by Lois,
his wife of 64 years; his sister,
Mavis Marple of Newell; his daughter, Josette and husband,
Charles Schamp of Urbandale; son-in-law, Stewart Iverson Jr.
of Clarion; granddaughter, Shelley Finnel and family of
