Ackley man dies following garage explosion

State Fire Marshall, Ackley PD investigating cause
Ladona Roelfs

August 22, 2009

An Ackley man has died following a garage explosion behind the Ackley Super Foods on Tuesday afternoon. State and local officials are investigating the incident to determine what may have caused the fire.

According to reports issued Wednesday by the Ackley Police Department, 27-year-old Derek Harrop-Miller was discovered on fire outside a garage behind the grocery store at 3:10 p.m., Tuesday. When officials arrived on the scene, Ackley Police Chief Pat Scallon said they found three people working to extinguish the flames on Harrop-Miller.

Scallon said three citizens were using blankets and a sheet to smother the fire.

As fire officials worked to extinguish the fire, which according to people in the area followed an explosion in the garage located at 509 First Ave., first responders worked to help Harrop-Miller.

Ackley Fire Chief Tim Eichmeier reportedly called Waterloo for helicopter transportation to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and a portion of Main Street was blocked off for the landing.

Scallon said officials contacted the Ackley Medical Center and Dr. Joe Wojcik and two nurses worked with other rescue personnel to stabilize Harrop-Miller and prepare him for transportation. Harrop-Miller was reportedly conscious and able to talk to medical personnel who were caring for him, Scallon said.

Harrop-Miller was transported to Iowa City, where he died that evening.

Scallon said the State Fire Marshall’s Office was on the scene by 4:45 p.m., Tuesday and “collected information that may help in the investigation.”

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday in Iowa City. The fire is being investigated by the Ackley Police and Fire departments and the State Fire Marshall.
