joining the family along with his older sister, Gladys. Fred
attended country school in Grant Township and graduated from
the
Hubbard High School in 1945. He sang in a high school
quartet and served as senior class president.
After high school, he began farming with his father. On
August 24, 1949, he was united in marriage to Melba Ann Engelking at
the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church, with the
Rev. Arthur Kruetzman officiating. Fred and Melba began
farming at the home place after their wedding. In the next
few years, they became the proud parents of four children,
Kathy, John, Steven and Deb.

tractor...driving it down the road and through the farm
field. Fred enjoyed raising livestock and helped his
children with their 4-H projects by getting calves ready to
show at the Hardin County Fair. He farmed for many years
with John, Steve and Kevin and later farmed with his

weddings and funerals in his younger years. He joined Cecil
Tesdahl, Dean Henricks and Lowell Kulow to form the Men’s
Quartet. This group sang at church and community events for
over 30 years. Reflecting on the quartet always brought Fred
many good memories.
Fred was happy to be with his family to celebrate his
80th birthday in May 2008. This past August, Fred and Melba
celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and he spent the
evening with his wife and family. It was very important to
him to reach both of these milestones.
