December 30, 2009

HUBBARD—Frederick William Kix, 81, died on Saturday, December 26, 2009, at the Hubbard Care Center Inc. in Hubbard.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 30, at 10:30 a.m., at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, with burial in the Hubbard Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Frederick William Kix, was born on May 23, 1928, on the Kix family farm seven miles southeast of Hubbard. He was the second child born to Arthur and Erna (Brandt) Kix, joining the family along with his older sister, Gladys. Fred attended country school in Grant Township and graduated from the Hubbard High School in 1945. He sang in a high school quartet and served as senior class president.

After high school, he began farming with his father. On August 24, 1949, he was united in marriage to Melba Ann Engelking at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church, with the Rev. Arthur Kruetzman officiating. Fred and Melba began farming at the home place after their wedding. In the next few years, they became the proud parents of four children, Kathy, John, Steven and Deb.

Fred was a lifelong member of the Zion United Church of Christ, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and Church Council member and president. Fred and Melba were the Zion Youth Fellowship leaders as well. Fred also served on the Finance Committee, the Mission Committee and the Organ Committee at Zion. At the Hubbard Farmers Cooperative, Fred was both a board member and served as the board’s president. Fred joined other community members to serve on the Retirement Home Committee in Hubbard. He was a Grant Township Drainage District Director for many years.

Fred loved farming. He loved the “prrrrr” of the tractors in the field. He loved climbing into a powerful tractor...driving it down the road and through the farm field. Fred enjoyed raising livestock and helped his children with their 4-H projects by getting calves ready to show at the Hardin County Fair. He farmed for many years with John, Steve and Kevin and later farmed with his grandson, Wes. Fred continued farming until his retirement.

Music was always special to Fred. He sang solos at many weddings and funerals in his younger years. He joined Cecil Tesdahl, Dean Henricks and Lowell Kulow to form the Men’s Quartet. This group sang at church and community events for over 30 years. Reflecting on the quartet always brought Fred many good memories.

Fred was happy to be with his family to celebrate his 80th birthday in May 2008. This past August, Fred and Melba celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and he spent the evening with his wife and family. It was very important to him to reach both of these milestones.

Fred was encircled by his family when death came to him on Saturday evening, December 26, 2009, at the Hubbard Care Center.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife, Melba of Hubbard; two daughters, Kathy (Mark) Muhs of Perry and Deb (Kevin) Eilbeck of Story City; two sons, John (Joy) Kix and Steven (Joyce) Kix, both of Hubbard; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Ziebell of Hubbard; one step-sister, Elda Jane Halfpop of Hubbard; and one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and John Perkins of Whitten.
