Delpha Louise Wood
March 10, 1922-May 4, 2009
May 9, 2009
ELDORA—Delpha Louise Wood, 87, died of congestive heart
failure on Monday, May 4, 2009, at the Dove Healthcare in
Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Funeral services will be
held on Saturday, May 9, at 2:00 p.m., at the Community
Church of Union, with Pastor Rick Schill officiating.
Internment will follow in the Eldora City Cemetery. Please
join us in celebrating the life of this person who touched
so many lives. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora is in
charge of the arrangements.
Born on March 10, 1922 in
Eldora, to John and Louise Graham, she was raised on the
family farm located south of Eldora. Delpha was extremely
close to her mother and brother after the premature loss of
her father in her pre-teens. She developed many school and
community friendships that were maintained throughout life,
and her roots in the community were deep.
Delpha graduated
from the Eldora High School in 1940 and then attended Iowa
State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls where she received
her teacher’s certificate. Her first job was at rural school
Mason Number 6 where she taught a small group of young
neighborhood farm kids who had “run off” the prior year’s
teacher.
Delpha
first noticed Robert at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines
where Delpha exhibited Oxford sheep and Robert showed hogs.
After several years of dating, including weekly Sunday trips
to deliver a homesick Delpha to college in Cedar Falls, they
were married on June 14, 1945, in the Congregational Church
in Eldora. Delpha and Robert began their marriage farming
south of Iowa Falls and Delpha drove her Chevy Coup with a
rumble seat to her new job teaching five local children at
Cleves Number 5 near Steamboat Rock. Delpha was proud that
many of her country school students went on to college and
various good endeavors in life.
Delpha
and Robert moved to what became the Wood family farm located
near Whitten. Delpha taught various elementary grades at the
Whitten Community School. Their first child, Roger, was born
in 1955 and died shortly after birth. Ann arrived in 1961
and David in 1963. Delpha was a devoted mother who put the
welfare of her children before everything else. Ann and
David always knew they were loved.
In 1969, Delpha returned
to the now merged Union-Whitten Community School to serve as
a special needs reading teacher. Always helping those most
in need, many students read their first words under Delpha’s
guidance and encouragement. In the late 1980s, Delpha
retired after 33 years of service in the Whitten or
Union-Whitten Community School Systems. She then became a
nurse’s aid at the Valley View Nursing Home in Eldora,
bringing comfort and peace to many residents until her
retirement in 2003.
Delpha
moved to the Oak Estates Assisted Living in Conrad in July
2007. She appreciated the beautiful apartment and friendship
with fellow residents and particularly appreciated the
helpful and friendly staff.
Delpha
is survived by her husband, Robert who resides at Dove
Healthcare in Eau Claire, Wisconsin; a daughter, Ann Wood
(Dean Lucker) of St. Paul, Minnesota; and a son, David
(Rebecca) and their children, Joshua and Elena, all of Eau
Claire.
Delpha
was preceded in death by her brother, John; sister-in-law,
Helen Graham; and many dear friends.
Delpha
will be remembered as a caring and committed mother, spouse,
friend, daughter, grandmother, sister, teacher and
caregiver. We will miss her very much.

PHOENIX, Arizona—Georgiana (Kaskadden) Sullivan, passed away
on Friday, May 22, 2009, at the age of 68.
She was known to many as
“George.” At the time of her death, she lived in Chandler,
Arizona. She died peacefully at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in
Phoenix, Arizona, due to complications from breast cancer.
George was born on May 31,
1940 in Waterloo, to her parents Al and Jane Kaskadden. She
was the younger sister to Nancy (Ray) Nissen. She was
married on December 17, 1961, to John “Sully” Sullivan in
Oelwein. She spent the first five years of her married life
living in Iowa Falls before moving to Indianola in 1966. In
1998, George and John transitioned to retirement on Sun
Valley Lake near Creston.
George enjoyed golfing,
gardening, playing bridge and entertaining on the lake from
1992 through 2004. Most recently in full retirement, George
and John built two homes in Arizona, which had become the
favorite vacation destinations to visit “Grandma George.”
One home was in the Sunbird Resort in Chandler and one was
in the White Mountains in Pinetop, Arizona. George sought
the soulful peace in the beauty of Arizona.
As a lifelong learner and
master teacher, education was always a part of George’s
life. After graduating in 1958 from the Oelwein High School,
George continued her education at the State College of Iowa
(University of Northern Iowa), where she graduated in May

during her teaching career which allowed her to positively
impact many phases of the lives of hundreds of young people.
George was extremely proud of and blessed with the unique
skills required to teach young teens.
George was always looking
to expand and feed her artistic side. She was infamous for
her natural talent and her desire to share her love through
art. She was adept at creating Ukrainian dyed Easter eggs (pysanky),
ceramics, stained glass creations, watercolors, pastel
sketches and her mother’s favorite pastime of knitting.

June 6, 2009
BRITT—Jake Lewerke, 93, of Britt, passed away on Sunday, May
31, 2009, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, June 5, at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt,
with Tim Vaughan and Mike Henry officiating. Burial was in
the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Ewing Funeral Chapel in
Britt was in charge of the arrangements.
Jake, son of Harm and
Jennie (Miller) Lewerke, was born on April 7, 1916, in
Aplington. Jake was united in marriage to Ethel Peck from
Crystal Lake on June 21, 1940. Following their loving
marriage, they made their home in Britt and then to Hayfield
where he farmed. Jake was a hard worker but never
complained. Relatives and friends loved to go be with Jake
and Ethel while on the farm. After a huge fire took his
farm, Jake ended up in Clarion and started driving Winnebago
motor homes and was semi-retired, but not from farm sales
and going in his truck. He and Ethel would always be busy
visiting relatives and friends, or being with their children
and grandchildren.
Jake was always so excited
when he knew Brad, his grandson, was coming over to go with
him in his truck. The grandchildren had much respect for
him. Ethel and Jake had 68 years together and they went to a
care center together three years ago. The staff of the
Westview Care Center lovingly cared for both him and Ethel.
Jake loved to go to Sunday
morning fellowships and had a love for God. He enjoyed the
Bible study talks up to last week.
Jake is survived by his
two sons, Doug (Jane) Lewerke of Prescott, Arizona and
children, Lori (Mike) Nelson, Lisa Lewerke, Linda (Scott)
Singleton, Jessica Lewerke and Jennifer Lewerke (fiancée,
Chris); Dean (Patsy) Lewerke of Iowa Falls and children,
Dena Lewerke and Ann Lewerke (friend, Adam); daughter,
Leaann (Greg) Anderson of Clarion and children, Brad (Kelli)
Anderson and Lyndi Anderson; six great-grandchildren; a
special niece and nephew, Ricky and Jolene; four sisters,
Susan McLain of Minnesota, Jennie Forshee, Rosie Brunson and
Eileen (Clifford) Smith, all of Britt; sisters-in-law, Betty
Ann Lewerke of Britt and Eula Lewerke of Minnesota; and
numerous other special nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; wife, Ethel; daughter, Patricia; brothers,
Harm, Pete and Elzo; and sisters, Ella Bergman and Gertrude
Smidt.
