step-grandchildren; and many cousins in this area.
He was preceded in death

IOWA FALLS—Alice Janssen, 99, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday,
November 9, 2009, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa
Falls.

on Thursday, November 12, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa
Falls, with burial in the Christian Reformed Cemetery, rural
Wellsburg. The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls was in
charge of the arrangements.
Alice Janssen, was born on
March 14, 1910 in Steamboat Rock, the daughter of Richard
and Antje (Kramer) Janssen. She graduated from the Iowa
Falls High School and had been a housekeeper.
She is survived by her
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her nine brothers and sisters, Tresse, Dick, Anna, Helen,
Johnny, Ed, Gladdes, George and Lilly.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas—Kenneth W. “Bill” Eberhardt, 86, went to
be with his Lord on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at San
Antonio, Texas.
A memorial service will be
held on Saturday, November 14, at 2:00 p.m., at the Chapel
Hill Methodist Church, San Antonio, Texas. Visitation will
be after the service in the Chapel Hill Church Fellowship
Hall. Burial will be at a later date in the Cedar Memorial
Park in Cedar Rapids. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to the Chapel Hill Methodist
Church, San Antonio, Texas and any Masonic Affiliate or to a
charity of the giver’s choice. The Simplicity Funeral Home
of San Antonio is in charge of the arrangements.
Bill was born on December
14, 1922 in Alden, to William H. and Nan (Seaton) Eberhardt.
He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and attended
Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls. He spent the first
34 years of his life on the Eberhardt Family Farm. He spent
over 39 years in the insurance industry; working for New
York Life, Iowa Farm Bureau and building his own independent
insurance agency in Cedar Rapids. He was a crop hail
adjuster for the Square Deal Insurance Company for 25 years.
He also had a farm seed business. He loved living on his
farm near Center Point for many years. He retired at age 78
and moved to San Antonio, Texas, to live.
Bill was a member of the
Chapel Hill United Methodist Church; was a 65-year member of
the Masonic Lodge, Past Master of Alden Lodge No. 366, dual
member of Atascosa Lodge No. 379, Lytle, Texas, Alzafar
Shrine, San Antonio, Adah Chapter Order of Eastern Star and
Past Patron Iowa Center Point Chapter No. 380 OES. He served
as a 4-H Leader for many years in Iowa Falls and was a
member of a male chorus group there. He loved singing in the
church choirs with his lovely tenor voice and praising the
Lord through song. He was also past chairman of the Board of
Deacons at the Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church in Cedar
Rapids.
Bill is survived by his
loving wife of 53 years, Bonnie; his son, Kenneth W.
Eberhardt II and wife, Pamela; granddaughters, Elizabeth,
Rebekah and Hannah Eberhardt of San Antonio, Texas;
daughter, Carole N. Moore and husband, S. Timothy Moore,
granddaughters, Kathryn and Megan Moore of South Amana;
sister, Mary Roed of Mankato, Minnesota; and several nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; sisters, Elizabeth Bradshaw and Patricia
Ainslile; and grandson, Anthony C. Moore.

IOWA FALLS—Helen Doty, 90, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Saturday, November 14, 2009, at the Valley View Nursing and
Rehab Center, Eldora.
Funeral services will be
held at 11:30 a.m., on Wednesday, November 18, at the Linn’s
Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls. A time of visitation will be one
hour before the services at the funeral home. The Linn’s
Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the
arrangements.
Helen Frerichs, was born
on October 22, 1919 at Steamboat Rock, the daughter of Arjes
and Wanda [Klettke] Frerichs. Helen’s father died when she
was 3 years old, leaving her mother soon giving birth to her
sister, Agnes. Helen started school at Steamboat Rock,
continuing with the Columbia School east of Eldora and the
Lincoln School near Iowa Falls. On October 20, 1940, Helen
was united in marriage to William Lyle Doty at the Cottage
Community Church, rural Iowa Falls. To this union two boys
were born, Marvin and Melvin.
She was a Sunday School
Teacher for many years. She enjoyed many things in life such
as gardening and working outside side by side with Lyle. She
loved the farm work and working with her lifetime partner in
life.
Helen is survived by her
sons, Marv Doty (Elaine) of Aurora, Illinois and Mel Doty of
Iowa Falls; two grandchildren, Christopher Doty and Jennifer
Carns; one great-grandchild, Parker Carns; one sister, Agnes
Pickering of Hubbard; and one half-brother, William
Rainsbarger of Le Grand.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Arjes and Wanda Frerichs; an infant brother,
Arjes Jr.; and one step-sister, Ruth Rainsbarger.

PHOENIX, Arizona—Trude
Burgess, beloved grandmother of Christopher and Rex Weaver
and mother of Christie Weaver and Pam Erickson, treasured
friend to many in Iowa Falls, died peacefully in her home in
Phoenix, Arizona, on Monday, November 16, 2009, at the age
91.
A successful realtor
and wife and mother, Trude was the first woman in Arizona to
sell 100K in real estate. She was an active member of her
church for over 50 years. She will be greatly missed for her
love of life, friends and family.
Her family and friends
will honor her with a celebration of life ceremony, to be
held at the Historic First Presbyterian Church in Phoenix,
on December 12. The family requests that memorial
contributions in lieu of flowers, be sent to the Hospice of
the Valley in Phoenix or to the American Cancer Society.

IOWA FALLS—Harold D. “Harry” Strauss, 83, of Iowa Falls,
passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at the
Presbyterian Village, Ackley.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 21, at the Linn’s
Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Brian King
officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Iowa
Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls Chapel, has been
entrusted with the arrangements.
Harry Dean Strauss, was
born on January 4, 1926, in Cerro Gordo County and adopted
by Paul and Pearl Strauss of Hardin County on January 22,
1926. He graduated from the Iowa Falls Community Schools
with the class of 1944. On February 13, 1945, he was united
in marriage to Dolores Ann Christensen in Renton,
Washington. To this union three daughters were born, Jacqlyn,
Dianne and Christie. Harry served in the U.S. Army with the
505th Parachute Regiment during World War II. The couple
returned to Iowa Falls where Harry worked as a switchman for
the B.C.R.N. Railway, the Rock Island Line and retired from
the Chicago and Northwestern Transportation Company in 1986.
He was a member of the
Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188 and the Benevolent
and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1674 of Iowa Falls.
Harry is survived by his
daughters, Lyn Campbell of Iowa Falls, Dianne Henrichs of
Iowa Falls and Christie Mein of Iowa Falls; a special
friend, Byrd Robbins of Iowa Falls; eight grandchildren,
Bret (Sandy) OKones of Swisher, Kent OKones of Clear Lake,
Matthew Campbell of Iowa Falls, Megan Campbell of Cedar
Rapids, Aaron Henrichs of West Des Moines, Chad Henrichs of
Urbandale, James Mein of New York, New York, Cathy Mein of
Tinley Park, Illinois and Angie Campbell Mellow of Iowa
Falls; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Paul and Pearl Strauss; his wife, Dee
Strauss; a son-in-law, David Campbell; and one
granddaughter, Corie OKones.

HUBBARD—Dean A. Henricks, 75, of Hubbard, died on Thursday,
November 19, 2009, at the Hubbard Care Center.
Memorial services were
held on Monday, November 23, at the Zion United Church of
Christ in Hubbard, with the Rev. Nancy Anderson officiating.
The Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard was in charge of the
arrangements. Memorial contributions may be directed to the
Zion United Church of Christ or the Hubbard Library Campaign
Fund.
Dean Albert Henricks, was
born on March 11, 1934, at the Eldora Hospital. He was the
eldest of two sons born to William and Miriam (Wehmeier)
Henricks. Dean grew up on a farm south of Hubbard. He
attended rural school, Grant No. 5, through the eighth grade
and then attended the Hubbard High School, graduating with
the Class of 1952. After high school, he farmed with his
father. On March 10, 1962, Dean was united in marriage to
Lucille (Twito) Broer at the Zion United Church of Christ.
They continued to farm the Henricks home place.
In 1984, Dean acquired
Dougan’s Beer Garden and became the proprietor of the Big
Boppers. Dean farmed until 1993 and continued operating the
bar until 1997. Dean and Lou then retired and moved into
Hubbard in 2000.
Dean was a member of the
Zion Church where he served on council. He belonged to the
Elks and served on boards including the Parkview Village,
Hubbard Golf and Recreation Club and Hubbard Care Center.
Dean was an avid golfer and reader. He enjoyed spending time
with his family. He was especially proud to have seen all of
his family this past summer.
Those remaining to cherish
his memory include his wife, Lou of Hubbard; two daughters,
Becky (Bent) Brask of Rolvsoy, Norway and Kathy (Craig)
Impastato of Grosse Pointe, Michigan; two sons, David
Henricks of Windsor Heights and Scott (Greg Kooyumjian)
Henricks of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; eight grandchildren,
Elisia, Steffen and Annette Brask, Rebecca and Henry Frank,
Ruth Impastato and Megan and Sydney Henricks; one brother
and sister-in-law, Dale and Lynn Henricks of Story City;
brother-in-law, Bob Twito of Bloomington, Minnesota; and
brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jake and Mae Twito of
Albert Lea, Minnesota and Les and Faye Rees of Des Moines.
Dean was preceded in death
by his parents.

Delmar Harms

ALDEN—Delmar Harms, died on Friday, November 20, 2009, at
his home in Alden, under the care of hospice, surrounded by
his family. He attained the age to 84 years, 6 months, 2
days.
Delmar was born on May 18,
1925 in rural Alden, the son of John and Emma [Lettow]
Harms. He graduated from the Alden High School in 1943 and
served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was united
in marriage to Mary Louise Nott on August 5, 1945, at the
Alden Memorial Congregational Church. Delmar was a farmer,
retiring in 1987. He and Mary spent the last 20 winters in
Yuma, Arizona He enjoyed time spent with his family,
especially his grandchildren.
Delmar was a 69-year
member of the Alden United Church of Christ, having been
baptized on June 7, 1925 and confirmed on May 12, 1940. At
the time of his death, he was the longest-running male
member of the church. He was a member of the Collins-Dunning
American Legion Post No. 201 of Alden and a member of the
Iowa Falls Elks Club B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1674 for 57 years.
Delmar is survived by his
wife of 64 years, Mary of Alden; a son, Gordon Lee Harms of
Iowa Falls; two daughters, Judith Marie DeVilder and
husband, Samuel of Eldora and Randi Emma Harms-Friedl of La
Crescent, Minnesota; five grandsons, Isaac Harms of Liberty,
Missouri, Adam Harms of Allston, Massachusetts, Benjamin
DeVilder of Eldora, Zachary DeVilder of Eldora and Evan
Friedl of La Crescent, Minnesota; one granddaughter, Emily
Friedl of Winona, Minnesota; a brother, William Earl Harms
and wife, Sheryl of Alden; a sister-in-law, Lois Harms of
Iowa Falls; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and
friends.
He was preceded in death
by both his parents, John and Emma; a sister, Verla Sielaff;
a brother, Leonard Harms; and a cousin, Marlys Shearer.

ACKLEY—Vernon M. Willms, 87, of Ackley, passed away at home
on Sunday, November 22, 2009.
Funeral services were
held at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, November 25, at the First
Presbyterian Church in Ackley. Burial was in the
Northlawn Cemetery in Iowa Falls. The Sietsema Funeral Home
in Ackley was in charge of the arrangements.
Vernon was born in Stout,
on September 10, 1922. His parents were Henry Willms and
Sema Karsjens. Vernon attended the Bradford Community
Schools before becoming employed by Roche’s Lumberyard in
Bradford. On December 26, 1942, he entered the Army Air
Force where he served in the South Pacific as a
cryptographer until his discharge in December of 1945. In
June 1946, he was united in marriage to Velma Lord at her
parents’ home in Bradford. He worked for Mulford
Construction for a short time, then began employment with
Farmer’s Coop Elevator Co. — first in Bradford, then ended
his 38-year career in Ackley.
Vernon was a longtime
active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he
served as an elder and trustee. He was also a 63-year member
of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, short
trips and most especially spending time with his family.
He is survived by his
wife, Velma; children, Vicki Harken and husband, Arlen,
Vaughn Willms and wife, Elaine, Vince Willms and wife, Cathy
and Van Willms and wife, Deb; four sisters, Christine Tripp,
Evelyn Murra, LaVelle Richman and LaVonne Off; one
brother-in-law; 19 grandchildren; and 27
great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by
his parents; one son, Verlynn; one daughter-in-law, Lynda;
and three brothers-in-law.

Evelyn P. Hanson

DOWS—Evelyn P. Hanson, 92,
of Dows, died on Monday, November 23, 2009, at the Sheffield
Care Center.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, November 28, at the First Lutheran Church in
Dows, with Pastor Bob Edwards officiating. Burial was in the
Otis Grove Cemetery near Dows. The Dugger Funeral Home in
Dows was in charge of the arrangements.
Evelyn Pearl (Ingebritson)
Hanson, was born on March 13, 1917, the daughter of Daniel
and Mary (Reynolds) Ingebritson, on a farm in Franklin
County. She attended country school near the farmstead and
went on to attend and graduate from the Popejoy High School.
Evelyn played basketball and played in the band. On March
21, 1937, Evelyn was united in marriage with Kenneth Hanson
at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Hampton. After their
marriage the couple lived for a short time south of Dows,
before moving to a farm near Goodell, where they made their
home. Later, Evelyn and Kenneth moved back to a farm near
Dows where they raised their family.
Evelyn was a homemaker who
loved flowers, gardening, sewing, cooking and spending time
with her family. She and Kenneth are well-remembered for the
Lefse they made and shared with people throughout the area.
Evelyn also enjoyed church, attending Ladies Aid and making
quilts.
Evelyn was known by her
family and others as the "Doughnut Queen," as she won many
blue ribbons at local and state fairs for her prize-winning
doughnuts. She enjoyed cooking for her family and having
everyone gather for family dinners. She was the "teacher"
for her grandchildren, as they made pies and did sewing
projects for 4-H.
Those left to cherish her
memory are her three sons, Merrill Hanson and wife,
Geraldine, Norman Hanson and wife, Carol and Neilan Hanson
and wife, Trish, all of Dows; seven grandchildren and their

Evelyn was preceded in
death by her husband, Kenneth; her parents, Dan and Mary; a

IOWA FALLS—Walking in faith with God and not by sight, Betty
Jean Jacobson entered into eternal life in Heaven with God,
on Thursday, November 26, 2009, at the Heritage Care Center,
Iowa Falls.
Memorial services were
held on Sunday, November 29, at the Bethany Lutheran Church
in Iowa Falls. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December
1, at the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove, with Pastor
Richard Taylor officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill
Cemetery in Eagle Grove. The Foust Funeral Home in Eagle
Grove was in charge of the arrangements.
Betty Jean Losee, was born
on November 24, 1923, to Harry Morgan Losee and Amy Ladesca
Mowatt Losee in Waterloo. At age 8, following the death of
her mother, the Depression in place and her father’s
inability to both work and care for his large family of
eight children, Betty would live in different homes with
either her sister, Mrs. Lela (Mel) Clark, or various
friends. She promised God then, if He would help see her
through these difficult times, she would vow to be the best
person, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and she would
proclaim God’s love for a lifetime. She was a faithful
servant until her last breath.
Betty and Al were married
on December 21, 1941. Four months later, Al left to fight in
World War II and they would be separated for nearly four
years. Betty became “Rosie the Riveter” at Boeing Aircraft
in Seattle working primarily on B-17s and 19s for the war.
Following his return from Europe, they returned to Eagle
Grove and, together, built a thriving business known as
Jacobson Construction. Many homes, churches and farm
buildings were built or remodeled. Betty moved to the
Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls, in 2006.
Betty was preceded in
death by her husband, Alfred in 1996; her granddaughter,
Christine Ann Butt; her seven siblings, Edith (Francis)
Johnson, twins, Lela (Mel) Clark and Lola Bernard, Earl
Losee, twins Laverne (Evelyn) and Vernon Losee and Evelyn
Waitek; and many nieces and nephews who called her Mother or
aunt. Betty was preceded in death by all of her in-law
sisters and brothers.
Celebrating her life with
wonderful memories include her son, John (Nancy) Jacobson of
Eagle Grove; and daughter, Sandi (Ken) Butt of Ackley; five
grandchildren, Kevin and Honoria Butt, Kristin (Butt) and
Ole Cleveland, Carrie (Butt) and Darren Kube, Brad and Julie
Jacobson and Jennifer Jacobson and Terry Steig. Seven
great-grandchildren called her Nana and they are, Espen,
Finn and Soren Cleveland, Victoria and Olivia Butt and
Hailey and Wilken Kube. She is also survived by “sisters”
Mabel Odland, Eleanor and Bev Jacobson.
Several Samuel and Bethany
Lutheran church friends, Hospice, friends, and Heritage Care
Center staff so lovingly cared for her. May Betty’s legacy
of promising God that she would be the “best servant of God”
live in all of us.

IOWA FALLS—David Ray
Allen, 81, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Thursday, November
26, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, November 30, at the Bethel Baptist Church, Iowa
Falls. Burial was in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery,
Iowa Falls. The Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, was in
charge of the arrangements.
David Ray Allen, was born
on November 15, 1928 at Rowan, the son of Otis Alvin and
Caroline [Gerald] Allen. He attended rural country schools,
graduating from the eighth grade in 1943. Ray was a farm
hand, carpenter, truck driver and heavy equipment operator,
being last employed by the Welden Brothers Construction,
Iowa Falls. He was united in marriage to Connie J. Groff on
December 3, 1980. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist
Church, Iowa Falls.
David Ray Allen is
survived by his wife, Connie Allen of Iowa Falls; his
children, Mark (Darla) Allen of Maryland, Ronald (Carol)
Allen of Popejoy, Boyd (Paula) Allen of Alden, Jeff (Candi)
Allen of McKinney, Texas and Jayme (Christi) Allen of Ames;
10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; eight
great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Banner of
Atlanta, Georgia.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Otis and Caroline Allen; a son, David Allen;
a grandson, Jason Allen; four sisters, Dorothy Allen, Neva
Banner, Florence DeVore and Alice Vanderwerf; and two
brothers, Otis "Jr." Allen and his twin brother, Eugene
"Faye" Allen.

Thursday, November 26, 2009, at the Rehabilitation Center of
Hampton.
Funeral services will be
held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, November 30, at the Geneva
United Methodist Church, with burial in the Lindenwood
Cemetery, rural Geneva. The Rev. Sylvia Kennedy will be
officiating at the service. Visitation will be on Sunday
from 1-3:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton.

STEAMBOAT ROCK—Jon D.E. Eckheart, 12 months, of Steamboat
Rock, died on Thursday, November 26, 2009, as a result of a
house fire.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, November 30, at the schoolhouse gymnasium in
Steamboat Rock. Interment was private. The Creps-Abels
Funeral Home in Eldora was in charge of the arrangements.
Jon is survived by his
parents, Joseph and Janell; two brothers, Justin Ethan and
Joseph Eckheart Jr.; grandparents, Clint and Rosan Walters
and Douglas and Brenda Vrem; great-grandparents, Nancy and
Joseph Bramon, Betty Walters and Patricia Eckheart; uncles,
James Eckheart and Christopher Vrem; aunt, Jennifer
Morrison; and many other aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death
by his great-grandmother, Ann Vrem; great-grandfathers, Carl
Walters, Dwaine Damon, Robert Eckheart and James Vrem; and
uncles, Tate Snyder and David Vrem.

IOWA FALLS—Ardell Blome, 98, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Friday, November 27, 2009, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, November 30, at the United Church of Christ in
Hubbard, with burial in the Hubbard Cemetery. The Boeke
Funeral Home in Hubbard was in charge of the arrangements.
Ardell
(Radohl) Blome, was born on June 27, 1911 in Buckeye
Township, to George and Erna (Peglow) Radohl. Ardell was
baptized and confirmed in the Peace Church in Buckeye, by
the Rev. M. J. Damman. She was a member of that church until
her marriage in 1936, when she became a member of Zion
United Church of Christ in Hubbard. Ardell attended the
rural school and then several years in Buckeye, graduating
from the Radcliffe High School in 1928. She then taught in
the rural schools for six years. On June 28, 1936, she was
united in marriage to Herbert Blome at the home of her
parents near Buckeye, by the Rev. Eric Bizer. They farmed
near Buckeye until their retirement, after which they moved
to Iowa Falls in 1984. After their retirement they spent
many winters in Texas.
Ardell
remained a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in
Hubbard until her death. She was a member of the Zion’s
Women’s Fellowship for many years and held several offices
in that organization.
Those remaining to cherish
her memory are her daughter, Patty Richtsmeier and husband,
Herman of Ames; son, Dennis and wife, Sue of Cedar Rapids;
daughter, Jan Harvey of Coralville; three grandchildren,
Lori Hommer and husband, Tim of Grimes, Lynne Richtsmeier of
Ames and Lisa Blome Cole and husband, Randy of Solon; five
great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; along
with several nieces and nephews.
Ardell
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert;
her sister, Lois Lawler; and a grandson, Kent Richtsmeier.

WEBSTER CITY—Wayne L. Smid, 72, of Webster City, died on
Friday, November 27, 2009, at the Hamilton Hospital at
Webster City.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, December 1, at the Asbury United Methodist
Church, with the Rev. Linda Bibb officiating. Private family
burial was in the Graceland Cemetery. The Foster Funeral and
Cremation Center of Webster City was in charge of the
arrangements. Memorials may be made to the University of
Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, J. Hayden Fry
Center for Prostate Cancer Research, Iowa City, Iowa.
Wayne Leroy Smid, son of
Edward and Louise Klaver Smid, was born on June 7, 1937 at
Webster City. He graduated from the Kamrar High School in
1955. On January 7, 1959, he married Billie Jean Dunn at
Webster City. After years of farming in Hamilton and Hardin
counties, he worked with his son at Jeff Smid Auto, managed
motels and enjoyed his position as a motor coach/tour bus
driver.
Wayne is survived by his
wife, Billie; his children, Jeff and Karen Smid of
Davenport, Faye and Jon Bowles of Chandler, Arizona, Paul
and Peggy Smid of Naperville, Illinois, Perry Smid of
Seattle, Washington and Rachael and Mike Yndestad of
Huntley, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Christi Smid of Normal,
Illinois; grandchildren, Clair, Laine and Paige Smid, Alyssa
and Jonny Bowles, Jack, Megan and Danny Smid and Annika and
Luther Yndestad; sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and
Dennis Short of Gainesville, Florida; mother-in-law, Lola
Dunn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; son, Dirk Smid; and brother, Merlyn Smid.

Friday, November 27, 2009, at the Franklin General Hospital
Nursing Facility in Hampton.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, December 1, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in
rural Hampton, with the Rev. David Bernhardt officiating.
Burial was in the St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in
rural Hampton. The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton
was in charge of the arrangements.

IOWA FALLS—Warren J. Martin, 88, formerly of New Providence,
died on Saturday, November 28, 2009, at the Scenic Manor in
Iowa Falls.
A private family memorial
service will be held on Saturday, December 12, at 10:00
a.m., at the Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard, with Lloyd
McDonald and Arlen Daleske officiating. Warren’s cremated
remains will be interred in the Honey Creek Cemetery prior
to the memorial service. The Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard
is in charge of the arrangements.
Warren Jesse Martin, was
born on December 30, 1920, on a farm south of New
Providence. He was one of five children born to Ralph and
Rachel (Steelman) Martin. He grew up in the New Providence
area and received his education by attending the New
Providence Community School District, graduated from high
school and then attended Iowa State College in Ames. He
farmed with his father for several years before entering the
U.S. Navy. Beginning on March 3, 1943, he honorably served
his country in the Naval Air Corps and was discharged on
October 21, 1945.
On June 18, 1945, Warren
was united in marriage to Ethel Saville in Watsonville,
California. To this union, four children were born, but this
marriage later ended in divorce. Warren spent his entire
working life farming in the New Providence area. He
continued to farm until he suffered a stroke in 2002. He
then moved to the Scenic Living Community in Iowa Falls.
Survivors include his
three daughters, Susan Brainard of Waterloo, Rebecca
Kubistal of Marshall, Minnesota and Marilyn Reynolds of
Fresno, California; one son, David of Nevada; 12
grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois
Rowan of Union; along with other relatives and friends.
Warren was preceded in
death by his parents; one sister, Mae; and two brothers,
Wallace and Ralph.

Tempe, Arizona and formerly of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Saturday, November 28, 2009, one day after being diagnosed
with terminal cancer.
A memorial Mass was held
on Friday, December 4, at the St. Edwards Catholic Church in
Phoenix, Arizona. Internment will be at a later date in Iowa
Falls.

CEDAR FALLS—Katharine Jean Hobbs, 89, of Cedar Falls,
formerly of Iowa Falls, died on Sunday, November 29, 2009,
at the Sartori Memorial Hospital, Cedar Falls.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, December 3, at the Western
Home Communities Chapel in Cedar Falls, with burial in the
Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Friends may call from 5-7:00
p.m., on Wednesday, at the Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar
Falls and for one hour prior to the services on Thursday at
the chapel. Family will receive friends at the Ashbrook
Assisted Living Center, Iowa Falls, following interment in
the Union Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Western
Home Communities, Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Katharine was born on
December 1, 1919 in Iowa Falls, the daughter of Norris L.
and Emma (Huston) McMillen. She married Raymond Hobbs on
August 18, 1940 in Waterloo. He died on July 12, 2002. Mrs.
Hobbs graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1936 and
attended Gates Business College in Waterloo. She was
employed with the Davidson Department Store in the 1940s and
Mary Lester Fabrics in the 1960s.
Survivors include two
sons, Lyle R. (Marilyn) Hobbs of Ft. Collins, Colorado and
Michael J. (Susan) Hobbs of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; a
daughter, Susan J. (David) Loy of Cedar Falls; seven
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by a son, Lyman in infancy; and three brothers, Howard and
Langdon McMillen and Kenneth McMillen, in infancy.

Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, with burial in the Oak Hill
Cemetery in Parkersburg. Visitation will be from 6-8:00
p.m., on Wednesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in
Parkersburg and continue one hour before the services at the
church.
