Kenneth D. Bernard
September 1, 1927-June 3, 2009

June 10, 2009

ELDORA—Kenneth D. Bernard, 81, of Eldora and formerly of New Providence, died on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at the Valley View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Eldora.

Kenny’s cremated remains were interred in the New Providence Cemetery during a family committal service prior to the memorial service. Memorial services were held on Sunday, June 7, at the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church in New Providence, with Arlen Daleske and Lloyd McDonald officiating. The Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard was in charge of the arrangements.

Kenneth Dwight Bernard, was born on September 1, 1927 in rural State Center, to Raymond and Hilda (Henze) Bernard and was later baptized in the Lutheran Church, State Center. In 1938, he moved with his parents and sister, Evelyn to a farm west of New Providence and graduated from the New Providence High School in 1945. In August of that year, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the South Pacific, Japan and China. Notably, his ship was involved in the Bikini Atoll Atom Bomb Test in the South Pacific. He was discharged from the service in October 1947 and returned to New Providence to farm with his father and marry his high school sweetheart, Donna Mae Faris on March 10, 1948. To this union were born four children, David, Daniel, Nancy and Susanne. Responsibility came early to Kenneth as he had to take over the family farm at the age of 23 after his father’s sudden death.

Kenneth was a hard-working farmer with a strong work ethic and a true lover of the land. He enjoyed the camaraderie with those who shared his interests of coon hunting, fishing, trapping and canoeing. His farm was host to many fowl as well as dogs. The adage “man’s best friend” was one he truly believed.

He was active in the community, serving on the Lawn Hill, ASC, school and cemetery boards and was a 4-H Leader. Kenneth never had idle hands and was always tackling a new challenge or hobby. Family and friends will continue to cherish the countless woodworking items he lovingly made for them. Give him a pattern or a picture and no project was unattainable. Cedar chests and clocks were his specialty.

He loved to dance, was quite the jokester and storyteller, and felt so blessed by the love of his family. Kenneth endured many health problems his last few years. He and Donna had just recently moved off the farm to an apartment in Eldora and were looking forward to total retirement and outings with friends.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Donna; children, David (Arlys) of Anchorage, Alaska, Daniel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Nancy (Robert) Winter of Hubbard and Susanne (Dwayne) Kincade of Elk River, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Curt (Carey) Winter, Laura (Isaac) Stauffer, Jim Kincade and fiancée, Lynn Vande Stouwe, Julie (Bryon) Marks, Megan Winter, Katie (Jason) Kincade, Ryan Kincade and Caroline Kincade; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Jenness of Marshalltown; and brother-in-law, Robert Faris of Iowa Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
