HAMPTON—Fonda Mae Parks, 76, of Hampton, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, May 3, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with the Rev. Arthur J. Zewert officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m., until the service time on Saturday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Virgil Wesley Jaques

IOWA FALLS—Virgil Wesley Jaques, 77, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center, following a long illness.

Family graveside services will be held at a later date. The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa assisted with the arrangements.

Virgil was born on June 22, 1930 in Iowa Falls, to Wesley and Greta Boyington Jaques. He married Patsy Murphy on April 8, 1955, in Iowa Falls. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Virgil was a member of the Iowa Falls VFW. He was involved in real estate and had also been a merchant marine captain in Naples, Florida.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy; daughter, LeeAnn (Ed) Thomas of Naples, Florida; two grandchildren, Evie and Eddie Thomas; nephew, George (Cathy) Jaques of Mount Pleasant; and niece, Sharon (Greg) Woods of Moberly, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Marlyn.

Edna E. Lyman

NEW PROVIDENCE—Edna E. Lyman, 86, of New Providence, died on Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 5, at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, with Pastor Arlen Daleske and Pastor Lloyd McDonald officiating. Burial followed in the Eldora City Cemetery in Eldora.

Edna Ellen (Taute) Lyman, was born on August 30, 1921 in Iowa Falls, the daughter of Charles Frederic William and Elsie Ellen (Mulkins) Taute Berlin. Edna was raised and educated in Iowa Falls. On August 6, 1938, she was united in marriage to Everett Henry Lyman in Princeton, Missouri. After their marriage, the couple lived and farmed in the Eldora, Zearing and New Providence areas.

Edna was a very determined woman who loved animals of all kinds. Edna’s family was the most important thing in life to her. Her best times were spent together with her family. She was also an excellent cook, often spending all day in the kitchen preparing meals for their farm help as well as making special holiday meals for her family to enjoy.

She is survived by her husband, Everett Lyman of New Providence; one son, Keith Lyman and wife, Ellen of Roland; two daughters, Barbara Dodge and husband, Richard of Mason City and Angene “Cookie” Lyman of Hubbard; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one half-sister, Helene De Oro of Elmonte, California.

She was preceded in death by her mother and her father; and one sister, Alice Crosser.

HAMPTON—Mary L. Feldhoff, 50, of Hampton, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 6, at the Hampton United Methodist Church, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiated at the service. The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert J. "Bob" Mullane

IOWA FALLS—Robert J. "Bob" Mullane, 88, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, May 9, at the St. Mark's Catholic Church, Iowa Falls, with Father Paul Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mark's Cemetery, Iowa Falls. A Rosary and Vigil will be at 4:30 p.m., on Thursday, at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel, followed by a time of visitation from 5-7:00 p.m., with an Elks Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m.

Robert James Mullane, was born on April 4, 1920, Easter Day, at Iowa Falls, the son of Sadie (Cutting) and Richard Daniel Mullane. He attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1938.

On March 23, 1945, Bob was united in marriage to Bernadine Francis Silvest at the St. Ambrose Cathedral, Des Moines. To this union two precious daughters were born, Kathy and Patricia. Bob owned and operated the Gasoline Alley gas station in Iowa Falls for 35 years. He was one of the three original partners in the company that later became Kum & Go Convenient Gas Stations. He was a longtime member of the Jobbers Association.

R.J. was one of the first and youngest Red Cross field examiners in Hardin County. He was the last living charter member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1331, Iowa Falls. Bob was also one of the original founding members of the Highland Golf and Country Club. Many of the trees on the course were planted by Bob and his old golf buddies. Bob was a lifeguard in the first swimming pool in Iowa Falls and at Beads Lake in Hampton. Robert was also a volunteer for the Iowa Falls Fire Department. He was a member of the St. Mark's Parish, Iowa Falls. He was a member of the 1937 Central Conference Championship Iowa Falls basketball team. He and his wife, Bernne were the Highland Country Club couples golf champions for several years.

Robert J. "Bob" Mullane is survived by his daughters, Kathy Mullane of Hudson, Ohio and Patty (Mrs. Gene) Cotteen of Hudson, Ohio; two grandchildren, Kristy Higgins and Mike Higgins of Akron, Ohio; his sister, Ruth Fletcher of Fort Wayne, Indiana; younger brother, George Mullane of Tempe, Arizona; many loving nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ron and Kate Hornung of Iowa Falls.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Sadie Mullane; his wife, Bernne Mullane on December 24, 2000; three brothers, Richard, John and Wally Mullane; and three sisters, Margaret and Mary Catherine Mullane and Alice Zwanziger.

Dustin “Dusty” Johnson

IOWA FALLS—Dustin “Dusty” Johnson, 64, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 10, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Dustin Dean Johnson, was born on October 8, 1943 at Belmond, the son of Harold “Toby” and Gladys (Ladd) Johnson. He attended the Belmond Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1962. He also attended the Iowa State Police Academy after graduation.

On May 20, 1972, Dusty was united in marriage to Susan Marie Stalzer at Iowa Falls. To this union two children were born, Stephanie and Ryan. Dusty was employed as a foreman for Iowa Prestressed Concrete, Inc., Iowa Falls. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1331, Iowa Falls.

Dusty Johnson is survived by his wife, Sue Johnson of Iowa Falls; his two children, Stephanie (Justin) Boor of Iowa Falls and Ryan Johnson of Iowa Falls; one granddaughter, Gretchen Boor of Iowa Falls; one brother, Harold “Duane” (Lea) Johnson of Alameda, California; and one sister, Neoma (Roger) Boyken of Crystal Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Toby and Gladys Johnson.

Lyle Eugene Thompson Sr.

ARCADIA, Florida—Lyle Eugene Thompson, 62, of Arcadia, Florida and formerly of the area, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at the DeSoto Memorial Hospital. No services are planned.

Lyle was born on May 10, 1945 in Iowa Falls, to Lyle and Darlene Thompson. He spent his adolescent years in Iowa and graduated from the Northeast Hamilton High School with the class of 1963. After high school he served a tour of duty with the US. Air Force and was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. He later relocated to Florida where he spent the rest of his life.

Always in some form of car sales, he was employed at the DeSoto Auto Mall in Arcadia for the past 11 years. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing golf, woodworking and was an avid reader, but most important in his life was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and true friend to all. We'll miss his special smile and boyish laughter.

Lyle is survived by Jody, his wife of 28 years; his son, Lyle Thompson Jr. (family nickname, "Tut") and one grandson, Logan Thompson, all of Arcadia, Florida; his parents, Lyle and Darlene Thompson of Alden; one brother, Randy Thompson and wife, Jean of Iowa Falls; one sister, Tammy Oskvig and husband, Dean of Stilwell, Kansas; nieces and nephews, Jaime Keninger and husband, Doug of Iowa Falls, Jayson Thompson of Frisco, Colorado, Tracy Hill and husband, Scot of Prairie Village, Kansas; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Owen, Eva, Emmett and Nora Hill.

DES MOINES—Alice Vanderwerf, 77, died on Sunday, May 11, 2008, at the Johnston Hospice, following a long battle with lung cancer.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, May 15, at the Brooks Funeral Care, Clive, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ackley.

Alice was born on November 3, 1930 in Hampton, to Otis and Carolyn Allen. On February 11, 1950, she married Gerald E. Vanderwerf. As a homemaker during most of her life, Alice cared dearly for her children.

She will be missed by her loving husband of 58 years, Gerald; children, Nancy (Ronald) Young of Webb City, Missouri, Dennis Vanderwerf of Des Moines and Donald Vanderwerf of Omaha; six grandchildren, Michael (Kristina) Young and Christina Ailes of Des Moines, Scott (Trina) of Hubert, North Carolina, Matt (Sara) Vanderwerf of Council Bluffs, Sarah (Joe) Kisler and Michelle (Jeff) Anderson of Omaha; 14 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Mary Banner of Winder, Georgia and Ray (Connie) Allen of Iowa Falls.

Alice was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Douglas Vanderwerf; and daughter-in-law, Darla (Dennis) Vanderwerf.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice, Johnston.

IOWA FALLS—Dorothy Hazel Madden, 93, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, May 12, 2008, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 15, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Hazel Madden, was born on August 14, 1914 at Iowa Falls, the daughter of William and Lulu Collier Ellison. She received her education in the local rural schools. She was united in marriage to Carroll Madden on March 24, 1934 at Webster City. Dorothy kept busy as a farm hand, dish washer and baby sitter.

Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church, U.M.W., Prairie View Club, Tuesday Pals, Sunset Trimmers and Seniors United.

She is survived by her daughter, Jessie Birchard and husband, Everett of Lake City, Florida; son-in-law, Bill Godsell of Iowa Falls; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son in infancy; two sisters; one brother; her husband, Carroll; and a daughter, Geraldine Godsell.

Dirk Dwayne Smid

BLOOMINGTON, Illinois—Dirk Dwayne Smid, 46, of Normal, Illinois, formerly of Alden, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the OSF St Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, Illinois.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 19, at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Normal, with interment in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Bloomington. Dr. Randall K. Perry officiated at the service. The Calvert and Metzler Memorial Home of Bloomington was in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Calvary United Methodist Church Building Fund, Normal, Illinois; the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; or the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, Iowa City, Iowa.

Dirk was born on December 2, 1961 in Webster City, to Wayne and Billie Dunn Smid. Dirk graduated from the Alden High School in 1980 and Central College, Pella, with a B.A. in May 1984. He received his master's degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1990, and his Certificate of Advanced Study from Illinois Sate University, Normal, in 1999. He was a National Board Certified Teacher. On July 28, 1984, he married Christi Adair in Toledo, Iowa.

Dirk had been teaching math at the University High School since 1990. He coached football at University High School from 1990-2001 and was head coach from 1992-2001. He was an assistant football coach at Normal Community West from 2003-2005 and was an assistant football coach at Illinois Wesleyan in 2006.

He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, Normal, where he taught Junior High Sunday School. Dirk was the faculty sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at U-High.

IOWA FALLS—Patricia Rowley, 79, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2008, at her home.

Patricia N. Rowley, was born on March 11, 1929, at her parents' home in North Branch, Guthrie County, the daughter of Margaret (Kelly) and Ilo Virgil Yates. She graduated from the Guthrie Center Community High School and attended the Gates Business School, Waterloo, and National College, Kansas City.

On August 24, 1951, Patricia was united in marriage to Neil LeRoy Rowley at the Methodist Church, Guthrie Center. To this union two children were born, Neil and Megan. She was a medical secretary and homemaker. They had lived in Japan, American Samoa, Rota of the Northern Marianas Islands and Iowa Falls.

Patricia was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, the Ellsworth Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Friend of the Iowa Falls Library, the Iowa Falls Garden Club, Friends of Calkins Campus and a former member of Etude and the Parchment Club. She enjoyed gardening (especially flowers) and the opera.

Patricia N. Rowley is survived by her husband, Dr. Neil Rowley of Iowa Falls; her son, Neil L. (Elizabeth) Rowley of Northfield, Minnesota; her daughter, Megan (Darrell) Norem of Manchester; six grandchildren; and one sister, Dr. Joyce Yates of Dexter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ilo and Margaret Yates; and one sister, Jacquelyn Yates.

Hazel Marcella Richtsmeier, was born on August 22, 1921, the daughter of Martin "Frank" and Marie (Anders) Ellefson. She graduated from the Geneva High Scho9l. On December 9, 1943, she was united in marriage to Maurice Richtsmeier in Ackley. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ackley.

Hazel is survived by her two sons, Michael and wife, Carol of Bemidji, Minnesota and Donald and wife, Linda of Ackley; three daughters, Mary Dellwo and husband, Bruce of Rosemount, Minnesota, Ruth Schneider and husband, Wayne of Jesup and Rita Julius and husband, Doug of West Bloomfield, Michigan; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Francie Richtsmeier of Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maurice; a daughter, Mary Kathryn; two sons, Steven and John; a daughter-in-law, Marty; and a brother, Harold "Curly" Ellefson.

IOWA FALLS—Anton J. "Tony" Moravec, 83, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.

Anton John Moravec, was born on January 30, 1925 in Tama County, to Anna Julia (Chizek) and Anton Moravec. He attended Traer Schools and graduated with the class of 1943. Right after graduation he joined the U.S. Navy, serving from July 9, 1943 to December 13, 1945, serving on the USS Saratoga.

On September 30, 1948, he was united in marriage to Neva Jean Valentine. To this union five children were born, Thomas, Linda, Steven, David and Diane. Tony started as a railroad section hand and then began working at Ralston Purina in 1949, and for Cargill in the maintenance department, working 37 years, nine months, and retiring in 1987.

Tony was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls; a member of the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188, Iowa Falls; a life member of the Borschel-Schwebke Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8708, Iowa Falls; and a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.

Tony is survived by his wife, Neva Moravec of Iowa Falls; his children, Thomas Moravec of Iowa Falls, Linda Moravec of Des Moines, Steven (Bonnie) Moravec of West Des Moines, David (Adria) Moravec of Richmond, Texas and Diane (LeRoy) Ziesman of Alden; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Elsie McDonald of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Anna Moravec; two brothers, John and Joseph (infant); and two sisters, Rosie Dieleman and Agnes Thompson.

Sylvia Bandow

MANILLA—Sylvia Bandow, 80, of Manilla, died at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center on Saturday, May 24, 2008.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, May 28, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla, with the Rev. Paul Frank officiating. Interment will be in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla. The arrangements were entrusted to the Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla.

Sylvia Mae, daughter of John and Ella (Lorenzen) McClatchey, was born on August 7, 1927 at Grant Center, Iowa. In 1934, when Sylvia was in the second grade, the family moved to Manilla. She was a member of the basketball team and graduated from the Manilla High School. On June 18, 1946, Sylvia was united in marriage with Alvin Albert Max Bandow at Manilla. They lived and farmed west of Manilla, then moved to town in 1951. In 1963 they moved to Iowa Falls, where Sylvia worked as the head cook in the school until 1975. Alvin retired in 1982 and the next year the couple moved back to Manilla.

Sylvia was the matriarch of her family. She loved family visits and enjoyed cleaning and keeping her house. Sylvia was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and a member of the Home Community Club. She was also Past President of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Sylvia volunteered and sewed at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home.

Over the years Sylvia faced many health challenges. Following an extended hospital stay and a short time at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home, she died at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center on Saturday morning, May 24. She was 80 years, 9 months and 17 days of age.

Preceding her in death were her parents; sons, Ronald Bandow and Russell Bandow; daughter, Roberta Bandow, in infancy; granddaughters, Jennifer and Kelly Bandow; four brothers, Earl, Ronald Dean, Carl and Gail McClatchey; and sister, Annabelle Meyer.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Alvin Bandow of Manilla; son, Randy Bandow and wife, Diane of Cumming, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Linda Bandow of Iowa Falls; six grandchildren, Kristi and husband, Blair Sailor of Woodstock, Georgia, Michelle and husband, Tim Gorder of Iowa Falls, Brett Bandow and wife, Erin of Alden, Shawn Bandow of Iowa Falls, Allison Bandow and fiancée, Tom Nixon of Mankato, Minnesota and Ben Bandow and fiancée, Ashley Hanson of Mankato; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Karen and husband, George Jahn of Gretna, Nebraska, Shirley and husband, Dick Hanson of Irwin and Linda and husband, Ron Olson of DeWitt; sister-in-law, Mary Lou McClatchey of Harrah, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Clarence Eugene Rieks

HUBBARD—Clarence Eugene Rieks, 74, of Hubbard, died on Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m., at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, with Pastor Mary Stonebraker officiating. Burial will be in the Hubbard Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard is in charge of the arrangements.

Clarence Eugene Rieks, was born on April 19, 1934 in Eldora, to Clarence and Myrtle (Schueller) Rieks. Gene attended country school 1⁄2 mile east of their farm. In third grade, he started attending the Hubbard School in town and graduated with the class of 1952.

He entered the Army in November 1954, serving in Germany for one year. When he returned home from serving in 1956, he continued to farm the home place southwest of Hubbard for 35 years. On April 11, 1958, he was united in marriage to Loretta (McCarty) Rieks at the First Baptist Church in Eldora.

In 1992, Gene worked at the DOT for one year. He worked at the USDA Animal Disease Lab in Ames in 1993 and retired in January 2003.

Gene was appointed to the Hardin County Conservation Board in 1991 and served for 12 1⁄2 years. He was very proud to have assisted with the planning and building of the Calkins Nature Center in Iowa Falls, serving as president of the board at the dedication of the new building. Gene was also instrumental in pushing for improvements at the Sac and Fox Overlook north of Steamboat Rock.

Gene spent endless days at his cabin along the river. He always said that he felt so close to God there. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, being with his grandchildren, family and friends.

Gene took his journey along the river with his Lord, May 24, 2008, from the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

He leaves behind his wife, Loretta of Hubbard; two daughters, Julie and husband, Randy Hill of McCallsburg and Jeanne Kunze of Colorado Springs, Colorado; four grandchildren, Tyler Hill and fiancée, Christine Dilling, Megan and Kory Thompson and Jacob and Jamie Kunze; along with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

IOWA FALLS—Mary “June” Butler, 71, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at the St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, May 29, at the St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Father Paul Baldwin and Father Phillip Schmitt officiating. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery, Scranton, Iowa. A Rosary and Scripture Service will be held at 4:30 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, followed by a time of visitation from 5-7:00 p.m., and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Mary June Kennett, was born on June 21, 1936 at Jefferson, Iowa, the daughter of Bessie Mae (Seaman) and Otto Floyd Kennett. She attended and graduated from the Scranton High School with the class of 1955. On November 26, 1955, Mary June was united in marriage to Donald Paul Butler at Jefferson. To this union three children were born, Mark, Jon and Mary Jo.

June retouched negatives for several area photographers and worked in the Iowa Falls school lunch program. In 1976 she and Darlene Pommrehn purchased Hoffman’s Hobby Store, carrying an extensive inventory of craft products. She later bought out her partner and the store became Crafts Unlimited. She worked for a total of 25 years teaching ceramics, stoneware and porcelain doll making, and silk flower arrangements. In addition she sold personal antiques and consignments. She was a very accomplished artist who will be missed by many.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Parish, Iowa Falls; the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 188, Iowa Falls; and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

June very much enjoyed her retired winters in south Texas with family and friends. She also volunteered working in the library on the USS Lexington at Corpus Christi, Texas, but most of all she enjoyed time with her extended family at the J5 RV Park, Mission, Texas.

Mary June Butler is survived by her husband, Don Butler of Iowa Falls; her sons, Mark (Cindy) Butler of Iowa Falls and Jon (Rebecca) Butler of Corpus Christi, Texas; her daughter, Mary Jo (Greg) Worden of Hampton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Juanita (Donald) Wright of Jefferson and Norma Jean McClurg of McKinney, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Bessie Kennett; two brothers, Gerald Kennett and Lloyd Kennett; and one sister, Wyona Hanen.

STRAWBERRY POINT—Leon B. “Gus” Bachtell, 77, of Strawberry Point and formerly of Arlington, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at the Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, May 28, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Kenneth Krueger officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Volga. A time of visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday until service time at the church. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Amenity Hospice, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Leon Burdette Bachtell, was born on December 30, 1930 in Arlington, the son of Hazel (Corbin) and Valmah Earl “Pete” Bachtell. He attended and graduated from the Arlington Public Schools with the class of 1950. He married Janice Jean McKiney on December 21, 1958, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church and was confirmed and baptized in 1959, also at St. John’s.

He lived in the Arlington area until moving to Iowa Falls in 1969. He worked as a mechanic and restaurant owner. He retired to Eagle Rock, Missouri in 1994. He moved to Strawberry Point in the fall of 2007.

Gus loved his family, gospel music, camping, cooking and baking. He liked spending time with his grandsons and visiting with friends and family. He liked showing off his 1937 John Deere tractor. He spent many hours to keep it running smoothly.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Bachtell of Strawberry Point; two sons, Tim (Sherri) Bachtell of Hubbard and Matthew Bachtell of Cameron, Missouri; three grandsons; one brother, Daryl “Dodo” (Dolly) Bachtell of West Union; and one sister, Beverly Ellefson of McAllister, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wayland Bachtell (infant), Sidney Lee and William Bachtell; and one sister, Darlene Nelson.

He was married on September 4, 1982 in Des Moines, to Rebecca S. Fisher. John enjoyed firearms and reading rifle magazines.

John is survived by his wife, Rebecca S. Goodrich of Latimer; sisters, Jeanne (Jim) Sillavan of Nixa, Missouri and Mary Lou (Phil) Brainerd of Mena, Arkansas; brother, James (Mary Jane) Goodrich of Ravendale, Washington; longtime friend and mentor, Kennith Hooper of Mena, Arkansas; special nephew, Kennith D. Hooper Jr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; nephews, John Hooper, Richard Castor, Brad Castor and David Brainerd; many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; and numerous other relatives and friends.

WELLSBURG—Grace Vivian Koolman Covert, 89, of Wellsburg, died on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital-Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center, from pneumonia and renal failure.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 31, at the United Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with Pastor Harold Miller officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the service time at the church. Inurnment will follow in the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Harold F. Heinz

ACKLEY—Harold F. Heinz, 82, of Ackley, died on Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 3, at the St. John's UCC in Ackley, with private burial in the Oakwood Cemetery. The Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley was in charge of the arrangements. A memorial has been established to the Ministerial Association of Parkersburg.

Harold Fredrick Heinz, was born on February 5, 1926 in Iowa Falls, the son of Fredrick and Elizabeth (Sailer) Heinz. He graduated from the Ackley High School in 1943 and was united in marriage to Mary Jane Harrington on October 2, 1949 in Ackley. Harold had been a farmer all of his life.

He was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ, was on the St. John's UCC Board and the Farmers Co-op Board, and was a Drainage District Trustee.

Harold is survived by his wife, Mary Jane of Ackley; two sons, Thomas (Tom) and wife, Brenda of Ackley and Mark and wife, Patricia of Ackley; a daughter, Judith (Judy) Crawford and husband, Rolland of Iowa Falls; eight grandchildren, Stacy Mills and husband, Dan of Phoenix, Arizona, Margaret (Maggie) Malm and husband, Jon of Baltimore, Maryland, Thomas J. Heinz of Ft. Dodge, Elizabeth (Libby) Heinz of Ackley, Joshua Crawford of Clear Lake, Nathan Crawford of Clear Lake, Madison Heinz of Ackley and Meghan Heinz of Ackley; three great-grandchildren, Ben, Jack and Sam Mills of Phoenix; and a sister, Lois Jean Meyer of Lake Forest, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bobby Heinz; and a sister, Joan.

Lois Mann

ELDORA—Lois Mann, 85, of Eldora, died on Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 1, at the First Baptist Church in Eldora, with Pastors John Scheel and Paul Mann officiating. Burial followed in the Eldora City Cemetery. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church.

Lois was born on July 28, 1922 in Warsaw, Illinois, the daughter of Cecil and Clara (Linkemann) Jingst. Lois received her education in Warsaw and graduated from the Warsaw High School. She then furthered her education at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, graduating in 1944. Lois served as a church secretary and youth worker at the Calvary Baptist Church in Quincy, Illinois. In November 1958, she came to Eldora to serve the First Baptist Church as the Secretary and Christian Education Director.

On October 6, 1962, Lois was united in marriage to Jesse Mann at the First Baptist Church in Eldora. Lois moved to the Millpond Retirement Center in Ankeny in 2007. Lois was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eldora, where she had taught Sunday School and vacation Bible School. Lois shared her gift of hospitality with others. She loved to entertain and make everyone feel welcome.

She is survived by sons, Paul (Imogene) Mann of Roswell, Georgia and Daryl (Sharon) of Maysville, Missouri; daughters, Darlene (David) Whims of Ankeny and Sara (Pastor Steve) Demoret of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska; daughter-in-law, Gale Mann Bauer of Mt. Vernon, Washington; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Kimble of Jerseyville, Illinois; two brothers, Alvin (Ruth) Jingst of Norwalk and Truman (Esther) Jingst of Sebring, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jesse in 2005; one son, Jess Allen in 1990; one sister, Elsie Vancil; one brother, Lester Jingst; and two brothers-in-law, Larry Vancil and John Kimble.
