SAN JOSE, California—Donavon Virgil Schuler, of San Jose,
California, died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 78,
on Sunday, August 31, 2008, after a long battle with kidney
disease and diabetes.
He was born on February 3, 1930 in Alexandria, Iowa. He was
raised in Iowa as the third of six children. Donavon served
in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, stationed for much
of the time in Hawaii. He moved to California in 1966 and
began selling display advertising at the Palo Alto Times
newspaper, where he spent the remainder of his career. He
married his beautiful wife, Sylvia Gates Schuler, and they
settled in San Jose to raise their children.
Donavon’s favorite
pastimes were fishing, both ocean fishing and lake fishing,
and creating memories for his children and grandchildren. He
was very proud of his vegetable garden and especially his
tomatoes. He looked forward to receiving his Times-Citizen
in the mail and promptly sat down to read it cover to cover,
telling his family about friends from his past.
Donavon is survived by his
wife, Sylvia; and children, Kathy (Steve) Schlief of San
Jose, California, Kevin (Pam) Kent of Murrietta, California,
Mike (Patty) Schuler of Escalon, California and Dawn
(Matthew) Townsend of Orlando, Florida; grandchildren,
Kimberly and Erik Schlief, Jennie Taylor, Denise Williams,
Christine Delgado, Cristen, Andrew and Timmy Schuler; seven
great-grandchildren; two surviving siblings, Dean (Ruth)
Schuler of Florida and Joanie Hodgson of Texas.
A family celebration of
his life will occur later this year. Donations in Donavon’s
memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, San
Jose, California.
