Alice Marie Kelsey Moore

IOWA FALLS—Alice Marie Kelsey Moore, died on Saturday, February 2, 2008.

A Texas memorial service was held on Monday, February 18, at the First United Methodist Church, Richardson. A Colorado memorial service was held on Friday, February 15, at the St. Andrew United Methodist Church, Highlands Ranch.

It was a life well-lived, born on May 7, 1920, to Edna K. Kratz and George Maxwell Kelsey on the family farm near Iowa Falls. After graduating from Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls, Alice taught area students in a one-room schoolhouse before becoming a radio operator at Braniff Airways in Chicago, Denver, Kansas City and Dallas.

Alice met the love of her life, Sherman C. Moore, who worked for Braniff at Love Field in Dallas. Alice and Sherman married on May 20, 1947, and had four children. She graduated magna cum laude from TWU in 1965 and was a teacher in the RISD for 20 years.

Alice and Sherman were very active members of the First United Methodist Church of Richardson, where she loved singing in the choir.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; four sisters; and one brother.

She is survived by her children, Patricia Moore-Gode, Becky Saba, Tom Moore and Rich Moore; grandchildren, Allison Saba Kennedy, Eric Saba, Tony Saba, Thomas Moore, Joshua Moore, Edward Moore and Brianna Moore; and great-grandchildren, Henry and Owen Kennedy.

STRATTON, Nebraska—James Albert (Jim) Mutschler, 71, passed away in the Dundy Hospital in Benkelman, Nebraska, on Tuesday, February 5, 2008.

Memorial services were held on Friday, February 8, at the Wiederspahn Funeral Home in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in Jim’s name to the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Geneva, Iowa.

Jim Mutschler, was born in his parents’ home in rural Geneva, on December 11, 1936. He attended the North Star Country School and the Geneva High School. He served in the 8th Army in Germany from 1954-1957. On September 22, 1973, he married Lois Asseth Erickson in Rochester, Minnespta. Jim worked as a mason in Minnesota and Wyoming. He enjoyed fishing whenever he could.

Jim is survived by step-children, Deb Erickson and Julie Hayes, both of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Michael Erickson of Culbertson, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Ann Wiekert of Iowa Falls and Frieda Emerson of Yuba, California; brothers, Richard Mutschler of La Crosse, Wisconsin and Edward Mutschler of Bradford; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his parents, Fred and Maria Mutschler of Iowa Falls; sister, Dorothy Dohlman of Hampton; and brothers, Elmer Mutschler of Sumner and Lester Mutschler and Marvin Mutschler, both of Iowa Falls.

Betty Lou (Lauterbach) O’Brien

ACKLEY—Betty Lou (Lauterbach) O’Brien, 78, of Ackley, died on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 9, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley, is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty was born in Iowa Falls on September 2, 1929, the daughter of Martin and Nell Lauterbach. Betty graduated from the Iowa Falls High School and Ellsworth College and later married Phillip J. O’Brien of Geneva, on April 19, 1952.

Betty was employed as a grade school teacher in Geneva and Aplington. Betty later worked at the Hampton nursing home in Hampton. Betty was an active quilter and an excellent seamstress and belonged to a local group. Betty volunteered at the Ackley Public Library and was active in the children’s reading program. Betty enjoyed playing cards, watching her grandchildren participate in athletics and was an excellent cook. Betty attended the St. Mary’s Church in Ackley and taught religious education in her younger days. Betty enjoyed reading, gardening and was active in the Ackley women’s club.

Betty is survived by four children, Jeanette (Ken) Cole of Pinole, California, Scott (Marilyn) O’Brien of Geneva, Fr. Steven O’Brien of Indianapolis, Indiana and Stuart Jeffrey (Lisa) O’Brien of Ely; brother, Richard Lauterbach of Iowa Falls; and sister, Ruth Fahden of Tucson, Arizona. Betty treasured her grandchildren, Bailey, Hannah and Aislyn Cole of Pinole, Meredith, Darren and Sybil O’Brien of Geneva and Delaney and Devin O’Brien of Ely.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip; her parents; her brother, Lewis Lauterbach; and her sister, Harriet Hackbarth.

William “Bill” Gilley

Hyla Ann (Severson) Harms

ALDEN—Hyla Ann (Severson) Harms, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at the age of 98 years, 4 days.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 9, at the United Methodist Church in Alden, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to the services at the church on Saturday. The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Alden Methodist Church.

Hyla was born on February 2, 1910 in Radcliffe, to Nels and Ethel (Mason) Severson. She was one of eight children. Hyla graduated from the Radcliffe High School and taught several years in country schools in Hamilton and Hardin counties. She later worked in Chicago as a governess, and at the World’s Fair in 1933 she met Rudolph J. Harms of Alden. They were married on March 21, 1936, and they farmed near Alden for many years.

Hyla was a loving wife and mother and was active in the Alden Methodist Church, The Order of Easter Star, Rainbow Girls, 4-H and many other community activities. She and Rudy retired to a home in Alden and spent many winters in Weslaco, Texas. Hyla later moved to the Scenic Living Communities in Iowa Falls, where she had been a resident for nine years.

Hyla is survived by three children, Everett (Ann) Harms of Alden, Dr. Dean (Mary) Harms of Ames and Ann (Dr. Richard) Gamble of Spirit Lake and the Villages, Florida; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; an infant daughter; and her sisters and brothers, Charlotte Severson, Hazel Carins, Lawrence Severson, Reuben Severson, Ellen Severson, Paul Severson and Alma Dudie.

Rebecca M. Moravek

IOWA FALLS—Rebecca M. Moravek, 60, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2008, at her home, under the care of the North Iowa Hospice.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, February 13, at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls. A time of visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Inurnment will be in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Rebecca Maria Soesbe, was born on February 19, 1947 at Iowa Falls, the daughter of Richard Marvin and Evelyn Juanita (Day) Soesbe. She attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools. She went on to attend the North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City, receiving her Associate Degree of Nursing. Rebecca worked as a Registered Nurse for the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.

On December 13, 2002, Rebecca was united in marriage to Ronald Eugene Moravek at Iowa City. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls and the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 188, Iowa Falls.

Rebecca M. Moravek is survived by her mother, Evelyn Juanita Soesbe of Iowa Falls; husband, Ronald of Iowa Falls; two sons, Richard Dean (Valerie) Soesbe of Eldora and Ronnie Eugene (Dori) Taggart of St. Paul, Minnesota; two daughters, Jennifer Anne (Patrick) Gray of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Chaeli Dee (Travis) Gerrish of Iowa Falls; a step-daughter, Kimberly Ann Moravek (David) Speich of Marion; a step-son, Anthony Moravek of Jacksonville, Arkansas; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her Papillon, Dolly too.

She was preceded in death by her father, Richard M. Soesbe; her grandparents; and an infant sister, Wilo Juanita Soesbe.

Leo Larson

BUCKEYE—Leo Larson, 78, of Buckeye, died on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Memorial services were held on Friday, February 22, at the Immanuel Memorial UCC in Alden, with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. A memorial service was presented by the Buckeye Fire Department following the visitation. As Leo had requested, his body was cremated and his remains will be buried in the Radcliffe Cemetery at a later date. The Boeke Funeral Homes of Radcliffe was in charge of the arrangements.

Leo was born on March 15, 1929 in Radcliffe, to Martin and Louise (Bly) Larson. He attended the Radcliffe Schools through the 11th grade.

He married Ruth Smith on April 28, 1950, at the UCC Church in Alden. He became a member of the Buckeye Fire Department in 1970. He worked as a truck driver for Chuck’s Auto & Tractor Wrecking for more than 30 years in Iowa Falls and then moved with the company to McAlester, Oklahoma, where he worked for them another eight years. In 1991, Leo returned to Buckeye to retire.

He enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with his family. His biggest joy was being a firefighter and attending all of the events, water fights and parades.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth; three daughters, Cindy (Larry) Klaffke, Barbara (Donnie) Hanna and Sharon Carpenter; and one son, Larry Larson, all of Buckeye; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arnold Larson of Pleasant Hill, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; three sisters; and an infant son, Lloyd Larson.

IOWA FALLS—Jane B. Klein, 80, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Monday, February 18, 2008, at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, February 22, at the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, rural Geneva, with the Rev. Phil Milam officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter’s Cemetery, rural Geneva. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Linn’s Funeral Home in Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Betty Jane Bailey, was born on April 29, 1927 at Iowa Falls, the daughter of Earl Orin and Tura Elizabeth "Betty" (Cordle) Bailey. She attended and graduated from the Iowa Falls Community Schools with the class of 1945. On November 18, 1945, Jane was united in marriage to Herbert Wray Klein at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls. To this union three children were born, Jim, Jack and Becky.

Jane was employed as a telephone operator and phone center representative for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., Iowa Falls. She was a member of the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, the St. Peter’s Women’s Fellowship and had served on the Union Cemetery Board of Directors. She was also a member of the Iowa Falls Business and Professional Women and Telephone Pioneers. Jane enjoyed being a mentor at the Rock Run Elementary School, Iowa Falls.

Jane B. Klein is survived by her children, Jim Klein of Jewell, Jack Klein of Peru and Becky (Bob) Funk of Altoona; seven grandchildren, Staci (Jason) Thompson, Steffani (Stephen) Rash, Shannon (Corey) Miller, Kristina (David) Huntoon, Jindi (Jason) Faircloth, Elizabeth (fiancée, Gary Messer) Funk and Bridget Funk; great-grandchildren, Trevor and Tanna Thompson, Connor Rash, Samantha and Tanner Garner, Chance, Hunter and Kaylee Faircloth and Jaelyn Messer; one sister, Judy (Dale) Everman; two step-sisters, Connie Wubbena and Sandy (Rick) Hoenig; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl O. and Betty Bailey; her husband, Herbert W. Klein; and one sister, JoAnn Juhl.

Avonelle E. Surls

ALDEN—Avonelle E. Surls, 82, of Alden, died on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 25, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery.

Avonelle E. Surls, was born on August 1, 1925 at Iowa Falls, the daughter of August and Sophie Hubrecht Meyer. She received her education in Iowa Falls and graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1943. She married Wayne Surls on February 12, 1946.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls and Royal Neighbors. Avonelle retired from the Weaver Construction Company where she had been a bookkeeper.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne of Alden; son, Russell Surls of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Chris Surls of Mount Vernon, Daniel Surls of Des Moines and Rebekah Clark of Iowa City; one great-grandson, Joshua Clark of Iowa City; and a brother, Marvin Meyer of Iowa Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Donald and Lawrence.

IOWA FALLS—Margaret N. Armagost, 91, of Iowa Falls, and formerly of Popejoy, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 25, at the Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls. Burial was in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.

Margaret Nettie Rout, was born on August 13, 1916, to Anna M. (Espe) and Zeddie Rout on the family farm southwest of Dows, Wright County. She attended Dows Schools. On August 13, 1938, Margaret was united in marriage to Walter L. Armagost. To this union two children were born, Gary and Jan. Margaret farmed with her husband and was a homemaker.

Margaret is survived by her son, Gary (Sandra) Armagost of Anderson, Indiana; daughter, Jan K. Dean of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one granddaughter, April K. Iacofano of Cape Cod, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Zeddie Rout; her husband, Walter Armagost in 1972; one sister, Violet Magnusson; and two brothers, Melvin Rout and William Rout Sr.

IOWA FALLS—Dorothy R. Woodley, 96, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2008, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, February 27, at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls. A time of visitation and fellowship will follow the services at the church. Dorothy Ruth Hoffner, was born on October 8, 1911 at Bethany, Washington County, Oregon, the daughter of the Rev. Otto and Elizabeth (Ackerman) Hoffner. She graduated from the Avon, South Dakota High School with the class of 1927, and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Dubuque in 1931. She was a biology laboratory assistant at the university, and also taught in the summer school there. She was a science teacher in the Dumont High School for several years.

On June 4, 1934, Dorothy was united in marriage to Harley Clifford Woodley of Dumont, at Chancellor, South Dakota. To this union two children were born, son Neil Howard and daughter Joan Lynnette. After her marriage, she assisted in the operation of their grocery and hardware retail stores which included a grocery at Center Point, a grocery store at Garrison, a grocery store and the Coast to Coast Store in Dysart and the Coast to Coast Store in Iowa Falls, from 1959 until retirement in 1970.

Dorothy Ruth Woodley is survived by her children, Neil (Suzanne) Woodley of Estes Park, Colorado and Joan Connor of Bellville, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Elizabeth Hoffner; her husband, Harley Woodley in 1997; and a sister and brother-in-law, Myrtle and Charles Wagaman.

Robert G. Burns

ALDEN—Robert G. Burns, 65, of Alden, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls, of Alpha 1 Antitrypsen Deficiency.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., on Friday, February 29, at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. T.J. Norman officiating. A time of visitation and refreshment will follow the services at the church. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Robert Gene Burns, was born on April 17, 1942 at Iowa City, the son of Dane Thomas and Nina Mae (Barrick) Burns. He attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1960. Robert served on active duty with the U.S. Army from November 9, 1961 until May 21, 1963, as a medical corpsman, and with the U.S. Army Reserve program until July 11, 1967.

On December 27, 1961, he was united in marriage to Fran Raska at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls. They have three children, Annette, Bobbi and Butch. Bob was a maintenance supervisor with the Ozark Salad Co. in Baxter Springs, Kansas, until retiring in 2002.

Bob is survived by his wife, Fran of Alden; his children, Annette (Lt. Col. Robert) Rauenhorst of Beaufort, South Carolina, Bobbi (Craig) Coughlin of Bloomington, Illinois and Butch Burns of Nevada, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, Maurice (Helen) Burns of Iowa Falls and Marlyn (Dorothy) Burns of Mesa, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dane and Nina Burns; and his sister, Marlys Burns.

ELDORA—Katherine V. “Kay” Haskin, 79, of Eldora, died of natural causes on Sunday, February 24, 2008, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, February 28, at the Eldora United Methodist Church in Eldora, with Pastor Richard Boatman officiating. Burial will follow in the Benson Cemetery near Whitten. Visitation is from 6-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora.

HAMPTON—Dean Artley, 88, of Hampton, passed away on Monday, February 25, 2008, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 1, at 1:00 p.m., at the Hampton United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in the Hampton Cemetery at a later date. The Rev. Dr. Edward R. Peterson will be officiating. The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of the arrangements.

UNION—Colleen F. Guiles, 78, of Union, died from natural causes on Monday, February 25, 2008, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Ellsworth G. Helm

POPEJOY—Ellsworth Helm, 91, of Popejoy, died on Thursday, February 28, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 3, at the United Methodist Church in Popejoy, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Full Military Rites were provided by the Dows American Legion Post No. 523. The Surls Funeral Home in Alden was in charge of the arrangements.

Ellsworth George Helm, was born on June 26, 1916 in Plymouth, the son of C. Almond and Tilla (Rossum) Helm. He graduated from the Plymouth High School and was in the Air Corps from 1942-45. Ellsworth was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Keeney on August 23, 1941 in Plymouth, and later to Eva Bridges on April 13, 1951 in Dows. He was co-owner of Ackerman’s Inc.

Ellsworth was a member of the Dows American Legion Post No. 523 and the Popejoy United Methodist Church.

Ellsworth is survived by his two daughters, Carol Vanderloop and husband, Tom and Becky Kalous and husband, Carroll, all of Alden; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Fonda Hickethier of Alden; and son-in-law, Roger Deike of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; a son, Marlyn Hickethier; a daughter, Cheryl Deike; an infant child; and infant twin granddaughters.

AREDALE—Edna Ayers, 102, of Aredale, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 28, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Aredale.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 3, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont, with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, rural Bristow. Roy Weber officiated at the service.
