Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, March 7, at the Hampton United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m., on Thursday, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. The Rev. Karl Watkins will officiate. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

IOWA FALLS—Kae Lynn Banner, 54, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, March 11, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Kae Lynn Armstrong, was born on February 27, 1954 at Des Moines, the daughter of Betty Lou (Williams) and Kenneth Leroy Armstrong. She attended and graduated from the Redondo Beach, California Community Schools and Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Falls. She was married to Michael Bowen in Las Vegas, Nevada and to this union two children were born, Allen and Kelley. On June 22, 1982, she was united in marriage to Daniel Joe Banner in Iowa Falls. To this union one daughter was born, Samantha. She was a bookkeeper/dispatcher for Banner Roofing, Iowa Falls.

Kae Lynn Banner is survived by her husband, Dan Banner of Iowa Falls; her mother, Betty Heartwell; children, Allen Bowen, Kelley Bowen and Samantha Banner; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father; and one sister, Pamela.

Freda Emma Winter

IOWA FALLS—Freda Emma Winter, 94, of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, March 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls is in charge of the arrangements.

Freda was born on February 10, 1914 in Iowa Falls, the daughter of Fred and Mollie (Gnade) Meyer. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1932 and attended Gregg’s Business School in Chicago. Freda was united in marriage to Edgar Winter on November 29, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois. She had been a secretary at Continental Music Co., an executive secretary with Rustoleum and then worked part time for Marshall Fields, all in Chicago. After being a resident of Evanston, Illinois, for 50 years, she moved back to Iowa Falls.

She had been a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, United Methodist Women, Sarah Circle, Rustoleum Royal Scot, card clubs, the Hospital Auxiliary and the Senior Center.

Freda is survived by her four sisters, Mildred Poland of Kewanee, Illinois, Wilma Wulke of Marshalltown, Arlene Smit of Iowa Falls and Marilyn Furman and husband, Dean of Bradford; brother, Leonard Meyer and wife, Annabel of Iowa Falls; brother-in-law, Jim Winter (Margaret) of Johnston; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edgar; two brothers, Henry Meyer and Lewis in infancy; and three sisters, Dorothy Bach, Maxine Barton and Irene Meyer.

Charles M. Shore
January 11, 1919-March 5, 2008

ELDORA—Charles Marion Shore, 89, of Eldora, died at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames on Wednesday, March 5, 2008.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, March 10, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, with Pastor Corey Larson officiating. Family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the service time. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn Memory Garden, with military rites conducted by the Walter Sayer American Legion Post No. 182 and the Roll-Harless VFW Post No. 3974 of Eldora. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora, is in charge of the arrangements.

Charles was born on January 11, 1919 in Lawn Hill, the son of William and Ida (Vestal) Shore. He graduated from the New Providence High School in 1937. Charles served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee serving in Trinidad, Hawaii and the Philippines. On June 1, 1941, he was united in marriage to Ruth Margaret Smith by the Rev. Dewey Lamprecht at the parsonage. Charles owned and operated Shore Construction and later Shore Farm Drainage for 40 years.

He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora. He was an Eldora City Council member for eight years and was a life member of the VFW and was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include a son, Joe Shore and wife, Charlene of Eldora; daughter, Beth and husband, Tom Rathe of Eldora; son, Randall Shore of Eldora; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; brother, Boyd Shore and wife, Vivian of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his parents; and two sisters, Ruth Shore Moon and Helen Shore Williams.

Floyd Ziesman
August 30, 1936-March 5, 2008

ALDEN—Floyd Ziesman, 71, of Alden, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at the St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, March 10, at the First Lutheran Church, Dows, with the Rev. Bob Edwards officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 p.m., on Sunday, at the Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls. Burial will be in the Otis Grove Cemetery, Dows. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Floyd Edwin Ziesman, was born on the family farm in Franklin County on August 30, 1936, the son of Laura Amelia (Schager) and Verner Robert Augustus Ziesman. He attended and graduated from the Oakland Township School of Popejoy. On March 15, 1958, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Jean Miller. To this union four children were born, Kevin, Sherri, David and Rebecca. Marilyn passed away in 1997. On July 24, 1999, he was united in marriage to Julia Marie Altizer Baker Stewart.

Floyd farmed northwest of Alden. Floyd served with the 133rd “Red Bull” Division of the Iowa National Guard, Iowa Falls, from 1959 to 1965. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Dows, serving as a Deacon and on the Board of Trustees, and was a member of the Morgan United Methodist Church, rural Dows. He was also a member of the Popejoy Lions Club, Franklin County Cattleman’s Association, the Franklin County Historical Society, a founding member of the Midwest Ramblers, and had served as precinct co-chair of the Oakland Township Democratic Committee.

Floyd is survived by his wife, Julia Ziesman of Alden; children, Kevin Ziesman of Fort Dodge, Sherri Ayala and significant other, Kent Brown of Fort Dodge, David Ziesman of Alden, Rebecca Heitland and husband, Jason of Iowa Falls, Shannon Stewart and wife, Sandy of Sioux City, Brett Stewart and wife, Melissa of Van Meter and Jeremy Stewart of Phoenix, Arizona; 14 grandchildren, Shandra, Cassie, Hunter, Jordan, Cheyenne, Sierra, Sage, Jessica, Amber, Nick, Alec, Peter, Max and Camryn; one great-grandchild, Khendrick; and siblings, Vern Ziesman and wife, Dorothy of Alden, Phyllis Walton and husband, Wilmer of Sheffield and Donald Ziesman and wife, Janet of Alden.

Beulah Fredericks

IOWA FALLS—Beulah Fredericks, 78, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2008, at the Scenic Manor Care Facility, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, March 13, at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls, with Pastor T.J. Norman officiating. There will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Beulah Mae Fredericks, was born on September 9, 1929, on the family farm northeast of Iowa Falls, in Grant Township, Franklin County, the daughter of Golda Belle (Strahorn) and Frank Fredericks. She attended the Grant Center Country School in Franklin County through eighth grade and graduated from the Iowa Falls Community Schools in 1947. She received her A.A. degree from Ellsworth College in 1949, her B.A. from the University of Iowa and her Masters of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. She taught school in Dallas Center, Iowa, and moved to California to become a Superintendent Administrator at the Fremont, Calififornia High School.

Her achievements include: she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Who’s Who in California and American Women and she was a Past President for the Association of California School Administrators. Beulah was the chair of the Ellsworth Community College Historical Committee. She was in charge of compiling information for the Ellsworth College “A Pictorial History” book published during the college’s centennial (1890-1990).

Beulah M. Fredericks is survived by her uncle, Keith (Jeanne) Strahorn; and many cousins including Beverly Chappell of Portland, Oregon, Robert Smith and wife, Judy of Muscatine and Randy Smith and wife, Darla of Iowa Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Golda Fredericks; and an infant brother, Frank Fredericks Jr.

Duane A. Wilson

URBANDALE—Longtime Hardin County resident Duane A. Wilson, 86, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, after a brief hospitalization.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 13, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Caldwell Raddatz Funeral Home, Urbandale. A private memorial service will be held on Friday. Memorial contributions can be made to the family and will be used to promote and preserve Iowa’s wildlife habitats and natural beauty.

Born on April 1, 1921 in Smith Center, Kansas, Duane was the eldest son of Harry A. and Golda G. Green Wilson. His sister, Patricia (Parsons) and brother, Noel preceded him in death. He grew up in Russell, Iowa and graduated from the Russell High School in 1938. He was an alternate candidate for the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland and enlisted in the Navy during World War II serving in Africa, Morocco and Hawaii.

After his honorable discharge from the service, Duane settled in upstate New York, working at the Corse Press in Sandy Creek, where he met Pauline Pearl Woodard. On September 1, 1948, they were married in Sandy Creek, New York and returned to Russell, Iowa, where Duane took over publishing the Union Tribune Newspaper from his father.

Duane left the newspaper business in 1954 to become a fish and game warden for the Iowa Conservation Commission (Department of Natural Resources). Originally assigned to work a territory in southern Iowa, he transferred to Hardin and Hamilton Counties where he worked as a conservation officer until he retired in 1983. He lived in Eldora, Ankeny and finally Urbandale following retirement.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pauline in June 2007.

He is survived by his daughters, Gaela Wilson of Urbandale and Joy Lyons of Urbandale; grandchildren, Meredith and Alex Lyons and Ethan Miller; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Elmer Hanson

ATLANTA, Georgia—Elmer Hanson, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at the Brighton Gardens Senior Citizen Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Memorial services will be held in Iowa Falls this summer and his ashes will be interred in the Brown family plot in the Union Cemetery.

Elmer was born on November 21, 1912 in Buffalo Center, Iowa, the son of Chris and Anna Hanson. He moved to Iowa Falls where he met and married Inez Brown in 1935.

Mr. Hanson was well known as a building contractor in Iowa Falls and surrounding towns. He built the St. Mark’s Catholic Church, the United Methodist Church, many International Harvester buildings, the former Piggly Wiggly building and numerous custom-built homes. Mr. Hanson was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge in Iowa Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Inez; daughters, Judy Hanson Stone and husband, Greg and Linda Hanson Cole and husband, Michael; four grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

LaVonne Elizabeth Redmon

ALDEN—LaVonne Elizabeth Redmon, passed from this life and on to her heavenly home Sunday, March 9, 2008.

Burial was in the Floral Haven Cemetery, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

LaVonne was born on December 8, 1917 in Alden, Iowa, the daughter of Adam and Lena Rehm. She was a very accomplished pianist and organist.

She graduated from the Alden High School in 1935. She was united in marriage to (Merle) James M. Redmon in 1937 at Dubuque, Iowa, and they were happily married for 57 years until Mr. Redmon passed away in December 1994.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Bailey and husband, Ed; son, Denny Redmon and wife, Joann; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She will be missed by all.

Gloria Beer

IOWA FALLS—Gloria Beer, 86, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2008, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, March 13, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Phil Milam officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Linn’s Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.

Gloria Ottist Bottke, was born on November 8, 1921, the daughter of Anna (Cupcheck) and Otto Bottke. She attended and graduated with the class of 1939 from the Iowa Falls Community Schools. On October 21, 1942, Gloria was united in marriage to Robert William Wear at Black Hawk, Wisconsin and to this union one daughter was born, Cynthia. Robert was killed in action near Montelimar, France on August 25, 1944, during World War II.

On June 30, 1946, she was united in marriage to Elmer William Beer at Princeton, Missouri and to this union two sons were born, Gregory and Gary. Gloria worked for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., Riverside Publishing and was her husband’s secretary for Beer Plumbing and Heating, Iowa Falls. She was a member of the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Geneva, the American Legion Auxiliary serving as Past President and the Eastside Ladies Aid.

Gloria O. Beer is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Dennis) Lovig of Clarksville, Arkansas; her sons, Gregory (Christie) Beer of Ankeny and Gary (Vicky) Beer of Boone; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Paul (Nada) Bottke of Iowa Falls and Karl Bottke of Cedar Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Anna Bottke; her husbands, PFC Robert Wear and Elmer Beer; and a sister-in-law, LaVerne Bottke.

Debra Lynn Johnson

TACOMA, Washington—Debra Lynn Johnson of Tacoma, Washington and formerly of Iowa Falls, passed away in her home on Monday, March 10, 2008, from complications from cancer.

A memorial will be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, on Saturday, March 29, at 11:00 a.m.

Debra was born to Lois and Steve Johnson on August 5, 1954 in Storm Lake. Deb attended several schools and was confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She graduated high school in Iowa Falls in 1972. She went to barber school in Waterloo and was a barber in Alden and Iowa Falls for several years. She later moved to Kansas, and then to her recent home.

Deb is survived by her daughter, Amanda Johnson of Tacoma, Washington; brother, Mike Johnson and Cheryl, both of Iowa Falls; and two sisters, Marilyn Abbott and Curly of Madison, Indiana and Julie Johnson of Forsythe, Montana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lois and Steve Johnson, formerly of Iowa Falls; brother, Jerry, formerly of Clear Lake; and a baby brother, Stephen Joseph Johnson.

Gary Olmstead

IOWA FALLS—Gary Olmstead, 56, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2008, at Ellsworth Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 22, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Iowa Falls. Burial will be in the St. Mark’s Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Gary D. Olmstead, was born on January 12, 1952 at Webster City, the son of Betty Maxine (Arnold) and Roy William Olmstead Jr. He attended the Webster City Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1970. He attended Iowa Central Community College, Webster City campus. On August 2, 1975, he was united in marriage to Suzanne Marie Mullen at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Iowa Falls. To this union two sons were born, Matthew and Daniel.

He was first employed with the Jewell Police Department from September 7, 1972 to 1974, transferring to the Iowa Falls Police Department from 1974 to 1981. He worked for Arnold Motor Supply, Webster City, from 1981 to 1986. Gary joined the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff on December 17, 1986, using the radio call sign 42-5. Gary graduated the 30th Iowa Police Academy Class on February 15, 1974.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Iowa Falls; the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1674, Iowa Falls; and the Iowa State Sheriffs’ and Deputies’ Association.

IOWA FALLS—Gladys Hartkopp, 83, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, March 17, 2008, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 20, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys Pearl Hartkopp, was born on October 16, 1924 at Hampton, the daughter of Ray and Watchie Schoon Diemer. She married Ernest Hartkopp on November 29, 1941 at Bethany, Missouri. Gladys was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls and a lifelong Hardin County resident.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest; children, Charles Hartkopp and his wife, Bonnie of Geneva, Ronald Hartkopp and his wife, Laura of Iowa Falls and Marlene Merklin and her husband, Bill Gross of Clear Lake; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Dallas Diemer and his wife, Pat of Iowa Falls and Wallace Diemer and his wife, Sharon of Hampton.

She was preceded in death by a son, Darwin; and nine brothers and sisters.

ANTIOCH, Tennessee—Carl Alvin “Al” Simons, 73, of Antioch, Tennessee, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2008. A native of Hampton, Iowa, he was the son of the late Carl Hunt and Lillian Pearl Bullis Simons.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Faye Ulrich Simons; sons, Kirk Simons of Clarion, Kyle Simons of Pleasantville, Randy Claussen of Ackley and Kevin Simons of Clarion; daughters, JoDee Orgell of Ackley and Kimberly Tomlinson of Antioch, Tennessee; brother, Charles Simons of Iowa Falls; sister, Ilomae Starry of Maquoketa; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 21, at the Woodfin Funeral Chapel, Smyrna, with Bro. Ron Caldwell officiating. Burial was in the Mapleview Cemetery. Family and friends served as pallbearers.

Mr. Simons was a member of the Church of Christ, a U.S. Army veteran and a retired truck driver.

IOWA FALLS—Catherine Smalley, 76, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at the North Iowa Medical Center, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 22, at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Burial was in the Alden Cemetery. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.

Catherine E. Cook, was born on September 27, 1931 at Scotia, Nebraska, the daughter of Charlotte Alice (Bushman) and George William Cook. She attended the Alden Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1949. On November 18, 1949, she was united in marriage to Wayne Smalley at Blairsburg, Iowa. To this union four children were born, David, Sally, Julie and Sherri. The couple was later divorced.

Catherine was a secretary for the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, for 21 years, retiring in 1988. She was a 50 year member of the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women’s Circle, the United Methodist Saints Group, the Iowa Falls Mothers Club, the Iowa Falls Garden Club and her card club.

Catherine is survived by her children, David (Wendy) Smalley of Rockford, Illinois, Sally Kelley of La Junta, Colorado, Julie (Robert Wille) Mueller of Clare, Iowa, Sherri Smalley of Loveland Colorado; six grandchildren, Emily (John) White of Rockford, Amanda Smalley of Rockford, Jenifer McGlone of Phoenix, Arizona, John (Stephanie) Mueller of Waukee, Iowa, Stephanie Murphy of La Junta, Jess Kelley of La Junta; five great-grandchildren, Bruce Smalley of Rockford, Sierra and Javin Mueller of Waukee, Luke and Jack Murphy of La Junta; one sister, Charlene (Joe) Shore of Eldora; and three brothers, the Rev. Clive (Mavis) Cook of Cedar Falls, Robert (Ruth) Cook of Iowa Falls, Harold (Ramona) Cook of Middletown, Delaware.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Charlotte Cook.

MARSHALLTOWN—George J. Dunphy, 79, of Marshalltown, formerly of Des Moines, died on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at the Veterans Hospital in Marshalltown.

George was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on November 4. 1928, to Mary Grace Flynn and George P. Dunphy. He attended St. Ambrose grade school and graduated from Dowling High School. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. George lived in California, Arizona and Florida before returning to Iowa 10 years ago.

George is survived by his children, Michelle Wilson of Frisco, Colorado and Patrick Wilson of St. Louis, Missouri; his siblings, Lawrence Dunphy of Perry, Dennis Dunphy of Las Vegas, Mary Jean Dunley of Des Moines, Ann Marie Lundy of Las Vegas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Christopher Wilson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Murdock Funeral Home in Perry is in charge of the arrangements.

Franklin O. McCord

IOWA FALLS—Franklin O. McCord, 82, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2008, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, March 26, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Mary Stonebraker officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Franklin Otto McCord was born on February 19, 1926, on his parents' farm in Franklin County, Iowa, the son of Mabel Helene (Ellefson) and Franklin Everett McCord. He attended Maple Grove Country School, graduated from Iowa Falls High School (class of 1943) and attended Ellsworth College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. He graduated from The George Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in 1951 and a master’s in 1952.

On July 29, 1951, Franklin was united in marriage to Catherine Newland Cole at the First Congregational Church, Iowa Falls. To this union three children were born, Margaret, David and Elizabeth. Franklin embarked with his family on a career as a Foreign Service officer in the United States Department, including service in Europe, Canada and Asia. At one point, as principal officer in Fiji, he was responsible for American interest in over 4 million square miles of the South Pacific, stretching from New Caledonia to Tahiti.

In 1978, Franklin retired from the Foreign Service and returned to Iowa Falls to begin another career of community involvement. He started the River Bend Rally and brought several businesses to town as the manager of the Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Development Corporation, receiving the Iowa Falls Community Service Award in 1983. As a founding member and officer of the Iowa Falls Historical Society, Franklin brought numerous visitors to town by organizing the purchase and restoration of Dow House, the Illinois Central Depot and Mills Tower.

Franklin was a member of the Iowa Falls Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188, the Iowa Falls Lions Club (president 1984-85), the Iowa Falls Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1674 and the Iowa Falls Arcturus Lodge #100 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (chaplain). Franklin also served as chairman of the Ellsworth College Centennial Committee from 1988-90 and received the Iowa Falls Community Service Award in 1983.

Franklin is survived by his wife, Catherine McCord of Iowa Falls; his children, Margaret Rose (Phillip McCarty) McCord of San Antonio, Texas, David Cole (Elizabeth) McCord of Ellicott City, Maryland, Elizabeth Carol (Patrick) Carpenter of Boone, Iowa; three grandchildren, Joseph Cole McCord and Elizabeth Clare McCord of Ellicott City and Laura Rose Carpenter of Boone; one sister, Constance Priestley of Sacramento, California; and one brother, Robert (Lillian) McCord of Iowa Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin E. and Mabel McCord; a granddaughter, Patricia Margaret McCord; and two sisters, Allene Minnis and Ruby Kane.

Clarence Murra

IOWA FALLS—Clarence Murra, 84, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 28, at the Evangelical Free Church, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Clarence Murra, was born on January 12, 1924, to Dick and Mary (Winters) Murra at Buffalo Center. He attended rural Winnebago Country School. On September 15, 1944, Clarence was united in marriage to Evelyn Mae Willms at the First Baptist Church, Hampton. To this union two daughters were born, Laurel and Connie. Clarence was employed by the Iowa Falls Coop Lumber Yard for many years; the Hardin County Conservation for seven years; and then for the Iowa Falls Parks and Recreation Department until retirement.

He enjoyed mowing, snow removal, woodworking, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife, family and friends, but his pride and joy were his grandkids and great-grandkids. Clarence touched many lives, and will be greatly missed and forever cherished by those who love him.

Clarence Murra is survived by his wife, Evelyn Murra of Iowa Falls; his daughters, Laurel (Ron) Greimann of Sheffield and Connie (Steve) Chambers of Galt; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Arlene Thorland, Grace (Bill) Jurgens and Marion (Verdon) Farrow, all of Buffalo Center; and three brothers, Arnie (Burnett) Murra of Forest City, John Murra of California and Dick (Betty) Murra of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Mary Murra; two sisters, Helen Hovey and Cornelia Staggs; and two brothers, Richard Murra and Bill Murra.

Vernon F. Schluter

MASON CITY—Vernon F. Schluter, 84, of Mason City, formerly of Nora Springs, died on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 28, at the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Jenny Edinger officiating. Interment was in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, with Military Honors performed by the Nora Springs American Legion Post No. 449. The Major Erickson Funeral Home of Mason City was in charge of the arrangements.

Vernon was born on March 8, 1924, in Heepen, Westfalen, Germany, the son of August and Martha (Wegener) Schluter. He immigrated to rural Eldora with his parents in 1925 and attended a rural one-room schoolhouse in Hardin County. He graduated from the Owasa High School in Owasa in 1943. He was drafted into the Army on February 26, 1945, and served during World War II, until being honorably discharged on October 15, 1946. He married Margaret Chantrill on May 23, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hubbard. Together they farmed many years in north central Iowa until retiring in 1986.

After retirement he enjoyed volunteering with many organizations and activities. He had a passion for old tractors; he restored them and drove them in local parades. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Nora Springs.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Mason City; children, Mary Keck of Gallant, Alabama and children, Tracia (Les) Billman, Jennifer (Stephen) Markle, and Kevin Lyndon (Ginni) Keck; Linda Schluter and Bob Strom of Mason City, and her children, Mark Lines, Sarah (Bob) O’Neill and Scott Lines; Larry (Sharon) Schluter of Osage and his children, Janet (Charles) Hooper, Teresa Carri Schluter and Michelle Schluter; Myron (Vicki) Schluter of Louisburg, Kansas and children, Rachel and Matthew Schluter; Randy (Susan) Schluter of Mason City and children, Nick (Sarah) Schluter and Mandy (Mike) Steckly; Dale (Karen) Schluter of Decorah and children, Travis and Mitch Schluter; Faye (Kyle) Lonning of Mason City and her children, Kelli, Ben and April Jeffrey; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert Schluter and wife, Ruby of Cresco and Kenny Schluter and wife, Dorothy of Bowen, Illinois; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Robert "Sammy" Shaner, was born on October 18, 1923 at Robertson, the son of Floyd and Ellen Shaner. He married Helen Shumaker on October 13, 1949, at Iowa Falls. Robert owned and operated the Smal-Fry Children’s Store in Iowa Falls. He was a member of the First Congregational UCC in Iowa Falls.

Survivors include his son, Kerry Shaner of Cedar Rapids and daughter, Janine Shaner of Iowa Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three sisters.

Jane D. Primus

STEAMBOAT ROCK—Jane D. Primus, 83, of Steamboat Rock, died from natural causes on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Jane’s body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine for scientific purposes. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, April 12, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, with Pastor Corey Larson officiating. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Friends of Pine Lake and will be used for playground equipment for Pine Lake State Park.

Jane was born on May 31, 1924 in North English, the daughter of Lawrence and Verna (Suman) Davis. She was raised in Greene where she graduated from high school, then continued her education at Iowa State University, receiving a B.A. in Home Economics. On August 23, 1955, Jane was united in marriage to Paul Primus at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora. They made their home in the Steamboat Rock-Eldora area.

She taught home economics in Oskaloosa for several years before marriage, then was employed as a home economist through the Iowa State Extension Service before working as a home health care aid for Hardin, Hamilton and Webster Counties. She retired in the mid-1970s.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, a 65-year member of PEO, and a 50-year member of the Progress Club of Steamboat Rock. Jane enjoyed writing poetry and was involved in writing a cookbook with several other area women.

Surviving are Jane’s husband, Paul; sons, Kenneth (Kristi) Primus of Steamboat Rock and Don (Rosanne) Primus of Eldora; sister, S.E. Davis of Sarasota, Florida; and grandchildren, Jordan and Bailey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Shadrack Davis; and sister, Helen Dell.
