NEVADA—Eva Ann Raske, 75, of Nevada, died on Sunday,
September 2, 2007, at the Rolling Green Village in Nevada.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 6, at the
First Christian Church in Nevada, with Pastor Brice Hughes
officiating. Burial followed in the Nevada Municipal
Cemetery. The Chet Ryan Mortuary and Cremation Services in
Nevada was in charge of the arrangements.
Eva was born on April 24, 1932 in Iowa Falls, to Albert and
Dora (Tjarks) Silvest. She was a graduate of the Iowa Falls
High School. On August 31, 1947, Eva married Lyle C. Raske
in Iowa Falls.
She was employed as an LPN in nursing homes in Iowa Falls
and Eldora. Eva and Lyle also had served as the managers at
the Meadows in Nevada. She was a member of the First
Christian Church. Eva enjoyed making custard pies.
Eva is survived by a son, Cecil Raske of Radcliffe; two
daughters, Karon Ward of Nevada and Marvella Martin of
Madrid; a daughter-in-law, Teri Raske of Nevada; a sister,
Dorothy Bates of Iowa Falls; 14 grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
Eva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle
on May 26, 1995; a granddaughter, Wendy on January 8, 1994;
a son, Ray Raske on December 27, 2005; a son-in-law, Allen
Martin on May 31, 2006; three brothers; and two sisters.

IOWA FALLS—William “Ozzie” McCullers, 83, of Iowa Falls,
passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at the
Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Per Ozzie’s request, no formal funeral services will be
held. An informal memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m., on
Tuesday, September 11, at the Scenic Manor main dining room,
Iowa Falls. Netha Brada will officiate. His body was
cremated and his remains buried in the Union Cemetery, Iowa
Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been
entrusted with the arrangements.
William Ernest McCullers, was born on June 18, 1924 at
Chicago, Illinois, the son of William Henry and Carrie
(Walker) McCullers. His family moved to Iowa Falls when
Ozzie was 2 years old. Ozzie graduated from the Iowa Falls
High School, attended Ellsworth College for two years and
then graduated from Cornell College with a Bachelor’s
Degree. He also did work toward his Master’s Degree at
Cornell.
Ozzie worked for 16 years at the Eldora Training School and
then became manager and cook for the Boy Scout Camp at
Waverly. Ozzie served with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946.

IOWA FALLS—Wayne Lamasters, 89, of Iowa Falls, passed away
on Saturday, September 8, 2007, at the Ellsworth Municipal
Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday,
September 12, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls,
with the Rev. Kenneth Krueger officiating. Burial will
follow in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls,
with military honors by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion
Post No. 188, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa
Falls is in charge of the arrangements.
Henry “Wayne” Lamasters, was born on July 9, 1918 at Harris,
Missouri, the son of John Henry and Bertha (McGill)
Lamasters. He attended country and grade school in Grundy
and Hardin counties. He graduated from the Eldora High
School with the class of 1938. Wayne served with the U.S.
Army during World War II.
On May 29, 1942, he was united in marriage to Gladys Eleanor
Sandberg at Iowa Falls. To this union two daughters were
born, Marilyn and Colleen. Wayne worked for Swift and Co. in
Iowa Falls for 10 years, the Hoxie Fruit Company for 10
years, before becoming a salesman for Campbell Supply and
finally a salesman for Buske Industries for 24 years.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls
and the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188, Iowa
Falls, of which he was a past commander and also a past
district vice commander.
Wayne Lamasters is survived by his loving wife of 65 years,
Gladys Lamasters of Iowa Falls; his daughters, Marilyn
(Larry) Kinney of Iowa Falls and Colleen (Marcus) Lamoreux
of Story City; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
two sisters, Betty Ball of Eldora and Doris Stroh of
Humboldt; two brothers, Harold “Bud” Lamasters of Loveland,
Colorado and Dean Lamasters of Eldora; and one
brother-in-law, Bill Smith of Steamboat Rock.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe Lamasters,
Jerry Lamasters and Larrie Lamasters; two sisters, Jessie
Smith and Helen Lamasters (infant); two brothers-in-law,
Glen Ball and Neal Stroh; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth
Lamasters and Avonelle Lamasters.

ELDORA—Gene Raymond Merritt, 72, of Eldora, died at his home
from natural causes on Saturday, September 8, 2007.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday,
September 12, at the Eldora United Methodist Church in
Eldora, with Pastor Richard Boatman officiating. Following
cremation, burial will be at a later date in Kalona.
Visitation will be at the church prior to the services on
Wednesday, from 10-11:00 a.m. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home
is in charge of the arrangements.
Gene was born on May 4, 1935 in Pierce City, Missouri, son
of Frank Raymond and Lucy Josephine (Carver) Merritt. He
moved with his family to Pasadena, California, when he was
5, then graduated from the John Muir High School and
Pasadena Jr. College in 1954. Gene served in the U.S. Marine
Corps from 1954-1966 as a fighter pilot, attaining the rank
of captain.
On August 31, 1956, he was united in marriage to Mary
Elizabeth Quick in Pasadena. Gene owned and operated several
retail paint businesses in Pasadena before coming to Iowa in
1978 to manufacture and sell paint. On April 1, 1995, he
moved to Eldora where he purchased the Merritt Mobile Home
Park.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Julia Swallow
and husband, Raymond of Covina, California and Jennifer
Smith and husband, Chris of San Diego, California;
daughter-in-law, Regina Merritt of Kalona; sister, Tonia
Brooks of Pasadena; 10 grandchildren; and a
great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Jeff Raymond
and Joel Richard; and sister, Molly McWee.

IOWA FALLS—Russell “Jack” Huffman, 90, of Iowa Falls, passed
away on Monday, September 10, 2007, at the Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday,
September 15, at the Evangelical Free Church, Iowa Falls,
with Pastor Steve Hill and the Rev. Bob Nieuwendorp
officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery, with
military honors provided by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion
Post No. 188, Iowa Falls. A time of visitation will be from
5-7:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa
Falls Chapel.
Russell “Jack” Oliver Huffman, was born on April 12, 1917 at
Owasa, the son of Oliver A. and Bessie M. (Verbeck) Huffman.
He grew up in Hardin County and graduated from the Owasa
High School with the class of 1933. After graduation Jack
worked for the Hoxie Fruit Co., Iowa Falls, and then worked
on the ALCAN Highway in Alaska. He joined the U.S. Navy
where he served in the South Pacific for 3 1/2 years during
World War II.
In December 1946 he married Waneva Benda Lange. To this
union two children were born. They were the parents of six
children, Sherry, Sharron, Linda, Donald (Sonny), Edward and
Kathleen. They lived in the Owasa community and farmed from
1948 to 1959. He then moved to Iowa Falls and worked for
Nichols Plumbing and Heating and then moved to Ames were he
worked for the U.S. Disease Laboratory until 1967. He
returned to Iowa Falls and was a self-employed plumber with
Huffman Plumbing from 1967 until he retired in 1992.
Jack was a charter member of the Bethel Baptist Church where
he served in various offices. He was also a member of the
Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188, Iowa Falls.
Jack is survived by his wife, Waneva Huffman of Iowa Falls;
five children, Sherry Crosser of Eldora, Sharron Duvall of
Kansas City, Missouri, Linda (Jerry) Jones of Bellevue,
Nebraska, Donald “Sonny” (Carolyn) Lange of Iowa Falls and
Edward (Diane) Huffman of Ames; 15 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Also
surviving are nephews, Ray Taylor, Joe Sturm and David
Sturm; and nieces, Patricia Huffman and Jackie Thayer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Bessie
Huffman; his daughter, Kathleen Hunt; grandson, Daniel
Lange; granddaughter, Lisa Lange; four brothers, Ray
Huffman, Lester Huffman, Irvin Huffman and Ben Huffman; and
four sisters, Mary Taylor, Esther Huffman (infant), Ruth
Sturm and Eulah Scott.

CLEAR LAKE—Kyle A. DeVries, 20, of Clear Lake, died on
Tuesday, September 11, 2007, at his home surrounded by
family and friends after a hard-fought battle with leukemia.
Funeral services were held on Friday, September 14, at the
Agape Christian Family Church, Clear Lake, with Pastor David
Toyne officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in
charge of the arrangements. Family suggests memorials to the
Kyle A. DeVries Memorial Fund to be used to set up a
scholarship fund.
Kyle was born in New Hampton, the son of David and Jackie (Swehla)
DeVries. He attended school through his freshman year at New
Hampton and then moved to Clear Lake where he graduated in
2005. While in high school he was active in sports, playing
baseball, wrestling and especially football. After he
graduated from high school he was attending Ellsworth
Community College, Iowa Falls, where he played football and
would have graduated in May of 2007.
He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Hawkeye fan. Kyle
enjoyed playing Playstation with his friends, watching
football with his buddies, going to movies with his fiancée,
Erin and spending time with his family.
He had a great sense of
humor and was always playing practical jokes. He was always
the life of the party and always more concerned about others
than himself.
Kyle is survived by his
father, David DeVries and wife, Roni of Clear Lake; his
mother, Jackie Lemke and husband, Jimmy of New Hampton;
daughter, Mia; brother, Logan Finnegan of New Hampton;
sisters, Lola Lemke of New Hampton and Kayla Byers of Mason
City; fiancée, Erin Morehouse of Clear Lake; paternal
grandmother, Cheryl DeVries of Charles City; maternal
grandmother, Pat Lukes of New Hampton; step-maternal
grandfather, Bob Volker of New Hampton; step-maternal
grandparents, Gary and Jeannie Lemke of Sumner;
step-paternal grandparents, Craig and Colette Brandau of
Mason City; great-grandmother, Charlotte Conway of Elma; and
aunts, uncles, cousins and hosts of friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Larry
DeVries; and maternal grandfather, Larry Swehla.

burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Jessie Schweertman
Locascio, was born on December 26, 1913 in Wellsburg, the
daughter of Louie and Anna (Engelkins) Schweertman. She was
united in marriage to Michael Locascio on May 13, 1958 in
Mesa, Arizona and had been a homemaker.
Jessie is survived by her
two step-daughters, Christine Levitan in Lauderdale Lakes,
Florida and Rosie Exter of Jacksonville, Florida; numerous
grandchildren; great-grandchildren;
great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; husband; seven brothers, Bouko, George,
Louie, John, Henry, Trienes and Elzo Schweertman; four
sisters, Gertrude Bulten, Jennie Molendorp, Anna TerHark and
Grace Schweertman; one step-daughter; and three step-sons.

in charge of the arrangements.
Merlin John Lupkes, was born on May 1, 1933 in rural Kesley,
the son of John and Grace Ibeling Lupkes. He graduated from
the Aplington High School in 1952. Merlin was united in
marriage to Josephine Abbas on December 7, 1954, Mary Ann
McWilliams on August 18, 1972 and to Florance Aldinger on
December 7, 2002. He had been a farmer and was a member of
the Washington Reformed Church and the American Cream Draft
Horse Assoc.
Merlin is survived by his wife, Florance; three sons, Myron
Lupkes and wife, Jayne of Joice, Wendell Lupkes and wife,
Renee of Waterloo and Justin Lupkes and wife, Lora of
Ackley; five step-daughters, Diane Miller and husband,
Wendale of Dumont, Bev Warns and husband, Jim of Keller,
Texas, Pat Warmbier and husband, Dave of Woodbine, Pam Hill
and husband, Mike of Ironton, Minnesota and Jennifer Nolting
and husband, Kent of Kansas City, Kansas; three step-sons,

IOWA FALLS—Marian Rewerts, 88, of Iowa Falls and formerly of
Steamboat Rock, died on Friday, September 14, 2007, at the
Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 17, at the
Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock, with burial in the
Steamboat Rock Cemetery. The Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley
was in charge of the arrangements.
Marian Agnes Greenfield Rewerts, was born on July 15, 1919
in Ackley, the daughter of Harm and Grace Johnson
Greenfield. She was united in marriage to William John
Rewerts on February 14, 1939, at her parents’ home in Butler
County.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Steamboat
Rock where she was involved in many church activities,
Steamboat Rock Iowa River Conservation Club and the Library
Coffee Club. She enjoyed camping and fishing, wintering in
Texas, and she entertained with her harmonica and friend,
Lucille on the piano.
Marian is survived by her son, Jerry Lee Rewerts and wife,
Carol of Nevada; five daughters, Marlys Jean Berry of
Oelwein, Wilma Kay Rose and husband, Dave of Brighton, Susan
Ione Jaspers and husband, Art of Ackley, Lois Grace Mills
and husband, Pat of Iowa Falls and Shirley Ann Heefner and
husband, Jim of Iowa City; 20 grandchildren; and 33
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William;
a son, Darwin (Butch) Rewerts; two grandsons, Shannon Rose
and Jason Rewerts; six sisters, Stena Gerdes, Lily Ackerman,
Miranda Maifield, Jeanette Meinders, Grace Hovenga and Viola

IOWA FALLS—Mary Ella Lee, 80, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Friday, September 14, 2007, at the Heritage Care Center.
A private graveside service was held on Monday, September
17, at the Northlawn Memory Garden Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Mary Ella DeSues, was born on July 20, 1927 at Los Angeles,
California, the daughter of Earl E. and Gladys Loretta (Bissonette)
DeSues. She graduated from the John C. Freemont High School,
Los Angeles, with the class of 1945.
On November 9, 1947, she was united in marriage to Edwin
Elwood Lee at Tijuana, Mexico. Mary was a salesperson for
Minnesota Valley Coffee for nine years and was a storekeeper
in Iowa Falls, owning the “This and That” store for 14
years.
Mary Ella Lee is survived by her two sons, William C. Lee of

EAGLE GROVE—Clifford Moon, 93, passed away on Sunday,
September 16, 2007, at the Villa Care Center in Fort Dodge.
Clifford deeded his body to the Des Moines University for
research. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the
family.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, September 24, at
2:00 p.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle
Grove, with Father Chris Podhajsky officiating. Visitation
will be held on Sunday, from 5-8:00 p.m., with a Rosary at
7:30 p.m., at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove.
Clifford the son of Jesse E. and Josephine (Carroll) Moon,
was born on August 22, 1914 on the family farm. Clifford
received his education at the Dayton Township School near
Eagle Grove. He farmed with his father before entering the
U.S. Army in April of 1941, where he served in the Aleutian
Islands. He received an honorable discharge on September 11,
1943.
On February 9, 1944,
Clifford was united in marriage with Marie Andrews at the
St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Clare. They made their home
in Eagle Grove where Clifford was employed as a conductor
for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad until his retirement.
Clifford was a member of
the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion, Disabled
American Veterans, Eagle Grove Senior Citizens and the
Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and received his 45-year
pin in 1990.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and a sister, Alice (Moon) Tungesvik of
Radcliffe.
Survivors include his
wife, Marie Moon; daughter, Loretta of Iowa Falls; son,
Roger and wife, Cecilia and granddaughter, Joanna of San
Diego, California; sister, LaVerna (Moon) Hannum of Boone;
and sister-in-law, Regis Crawford of Fort Dodge.

IOWA FALLS—Rolland “Rollie” Dee Lisle, 62, died on
Wednesday, September 19, 2007, at the Ellsworth Municipal
Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 23, at the
Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden, with the
Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Interment was in the Rippey
Cemetery in Rippey, Iowa. Memorials may be sent to the
Hastings Funeral Home, Perry.
Rolland Dee Lisle, son of Dean D. Lisle and Gladys Vivian
Heckathorn Lisle, was born on May 29, 1945 in Perry. Rollie,
as he was lovingly known, graduated from the Perry High
School in 1965 and then completed barbering school at the
Sioux City Barber School. He barbered at the Veterans
Hospital in Des Moines. Later Rollie worked for the city of
Perry for a year before joining Iowa Electric at the power
plant. He was transferred to Iowa Falls where he worked as a
truck driver/grounds man. IE later became Alliant Energy and
Rollie retired in 2003 as a gas mechanic.
On November 3, 1967, Rollie married Linda Lu Lape. They
lived in Des Moines for a time and then Perry before moving
to Alden in 1973. Rollie and Linda were parents of two sons,
Steve and Blaine. Rollie enjoyed NASCAR, camping, and his
memberships in his church, Immanuel Memorial United Church
of Christ in Alden, Elks Lodge 1674, where he was Past
Exalted Ruler, Masonic Home Lodge 192, where he was Past
Master, Order of Eastern Star, where he was Past Patron, and
the Moose Lodge 1331.
Rollie was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law,
Owen and Alice Lape; brother-in-law, Albert Lape; and
sister-in-law, Glenda Swaink.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; sons, Steve and wife,
Tonya of Woodward and Blaine of Alden; two grandsons, Dakota
and Gage Lisle of Woodward; two sisters, Renee Wullenwaber
and husband, Dick of Perry and Deana Sheehy of Jamaica; two
brothers, Larry and wife, Karen of St. Louis, Missouri and
Robert and wife, Carol of San Antonio, Texas; nieces and
nephews; an aunt, Vina Latimer of Waukee; brother-in-law,
Bob Swaink of Silver City; and other relatives and many
friends.

ELDORA—Miriam G. Priske, 90, of Eldora, died at the Valley
View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Eldora, of natural
causes on Saturday, September 22, 2007, while under the care
of Amenity Hospice.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 25, at the
First Baptist Church of Eldora. Burial was in the Eastlawn
Memory Garden. Memorials may be directed to the Eldora
Public Library. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora was
in charge of the arrangements.
Miriam was born on September 6, 1917, at her parents’ home
in Eldora, daughter of Edwin and Dessie (Castello) Doud. She
attended school in Owasa and graduated from the Owasa High
School in 1935. On May 15, 1937, Miriam was united in
marriage to Harold G. Priske at the Iowa Falls Baptist
Parsonage in Iowa Falls. Miriam worked in a variety of
businesses in Eldora as a clerk until retiring in 1995.
She was a member of the
First Baptist Church in Eldora. Miriam loved to spend time
with her family and friends.
Miriam is survived by her
husband, Harold; sons, Stanton and wife, Karen of Cedar
Rapids and Steve and wife, Linda of Eldora; five grandsons;
and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers,
Glen, Arthur and William Doud.

IOWA FALLS—Donald Thelke, 76, of Iowa Falls, and formerly of
Alden, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2007, at the
Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls, following a brief
illness.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 25, at the
Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, with Pastor Kenneth
Krueger officiating. Burial followed in the Alden Cemetery,
Alden. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was in
charge of the arrangements.
Donald Frederick Thelke, was born on August 4, 1931, in the
Lutheran Hospital, Hampton, the son of Herman and Margaret (Kniewasser)
Thelke. He was baptized at birth and later confirmed at the
Vernon Lutheran Church, Dows. He grew up in rural
Blairsburg, where he graduated from the Blairsburg High
School with the class of 1949.
On April 22, 1951, he was
united in marriage to Audrey Ann Smalley at the St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church in Webster City. Together they farmed north
of Alden until his retirement in 1995.
Don enjoyed camping and
fishing during the summer and spending his winters in
Florida. He also enjoyed going to his great-grandson,
Jayden’s baseball and basketball games. Family was very
important to him and he was always there for them.
He will be missed by his
wife, Audrey of Iowa Falls; and three children, Steve
(Carol) Thelke of Alden, Gary Thelke of Jacksonville,
Florida and Cathy (Roger) Schmitt of Parkersburg; five
grandchildren, Corey (Darla) Thelke of Grimes, Scott Thelke
of Alden, Jessica (Lee) Vanderwater of Winterset, Wade
(Stephanie) Welsh currently deployed with the U.S. Army in
Baghdad, Iraq and Matthew (Tiffany) Welsh of Junction City,
Kansas; and two great-grandchildren, Jayden Thelke of Iowa
Falls and Grant Vanderwater of Winterset.
Also surviving are his
siblings, Erma (Wendell) Larsen of Fort Dodge and twin
brother, Robert (Janice) Thelke of Blairsburg; and several
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Herman and Margaret Thelke of Fort Dodge;
and sister and brother-in-law, Nelda and Ivan Glasco of Fort
Dodge.

NEVADA—Michael “Mick” Meneough, 67, died on Sunday,
September 23, 2007, at his home in Nevada.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday,
September 26, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in
Nevada. Burial will be in the Alden Cemetery. The Bacon
Funeral Home and Crematory in Nevada is in charge of the
arrangements.
Mick was born in Des Moines on December 13, 1939, to Paul
“Joe” and Mary (Pink) Meneough. He served with the Army
National Guard for six years and he retired from Iowa
Electric where he was employed as an electric lineman.
He was a 20-year member of
the American Legion in Nevada and Ames, was founder of the
Patriotic Council in 1987 and was Chief of Staff since 1994;
Commander of the S.A.L., Nevada Fire Fighters, Past
President of the Nevada Jaycees, Nevada Cyclone Club and had
worked with the Story County Fairboard donating materials
and his time. Mick loved to travel. He loved his
grandchildren, the outdoors and being with his family and
friends. He loved all sports, especially Notre Dame
Football.
Surviving are his wife,
Diane (formerly Krause) Meneough of Nevada; two sons,
Matthew (Laurie) Meneough of Norwalk and Patrick (Julie)
Meneough of Manilla; a brother, John (Romona) Meneough of
Ormond Beach, Florida; and a sister, Judy (Donn) Simonson of
Fullerton, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and one daughter, Michelle Lynn in infancy.

IOWA FALLS—Ruth Adelmund Leyen, 84, of Iowa Falls, passed
away on Sunday, September 23, 2007, at the Iowa Methodist
Medical Center, Des Moines.
Memorial services were held on Thursday, September 27, at
the Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel. Inurnment was in
the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Ruth Adelmund, was born on May 19, 1923 at Parkersburg, the
daughter of William and Minnie (Weibrand) Adelmund. She
attended the Parkersburg Community Schools.
On August 7, 1943, Ruth was united in marriage to Charles
John Leyen at Waukomis, Oklahoma. To this union four
children were born, Terry, Randy, Charleen and Thomas. The
couple lived at many locations during Charles’ career with
the U.S. Air Force. After his military retirement they
settled in Iowa Falls. She was employed as a waitress with
the Scenic City Cafe and was also a machine operator with
General Publishing and Binding of Iowa Falls.
Ruth Leyen is survived by her children, Terry (Linda) Leyen
of Kittrell, North Carolina, Randy (Terry) Leyen of
O’Fallon, Missouri, Charleen Warmbier of Concord, North
Carolina and Thomas (Belinda) Leyen of Sumter, South
Carolina; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one
sister, Minnie (James) Clar of Cedar Rapids; and one
brother, Doug (Ruth) Adelmund of Parkersburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Minnie
Adelmund; her husband, Charles J. Leyen; two sisters, Suzie
Syhlman and Alline Bakker; three brothers, George Adelmund,
Abbie Adelmund and William Adelmund; and one granddaughter,
Tracie Renee Leyen.

DOWS—Julius Milford "Bus" McAdams,
died on Sunday, September 23, 2007, at the Hampton Health
Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 27, at the
First Lutheran Church in Dows, with Pastor Robert Edwards
officiating. Interment
took place in the Fairview Cemetery, Dows. Military rites
were provided by the Dows American Legion Post No. 523. The
Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home of Dows was in charge of
the arrangements.
Bus was born on November
3, 1913, to Hilda and Ed Shaffer and was raised in Franklin
County. Bus was raised by his aunt and uncle, Josephine and
Clyde McAdams and eventually took their name.
During his early teens Bus
came under the tutelage of V.B. Hamilton, a young county
agent and 4-H Leader who would go on to earn national and
international recognition. Hamilton engendered a lifelong
love of agriculture in Bus. Bus was proud of his membership
in the Franklin County 4-H, the largest chapter in the
nation with more than 400 members. Bus was a member of the
award-winning Franklin County 4-H team that judged cattle,
horses, hogs and sheep at the state fair. He visited the
Franklin County Fair this summer, where he met many old
friends and reminisced about his experiences.
He worked for the Byron
Meyer Livestock Company in Dows. He later became partners
with Barney in the business and then owner of the business,
which was renamed McAdams Livestock Company. He was known
for honesty both with farmers and packing plants.
Bus attended Iowa State
for two years and was a diehard Iowa State fan. He also
served in the US. Navy during World War II. He was active in
the community for many years, particularly on Community
Betterment and Corn Days Committees. He was a lifelong
member of the First Lutheran Church in Dows and served as
the first president of the congregation as well as on the
church council and the building committee. He was a charter
member of the Dows Lions Club, and celebrated his 50th year
as a Lions Club member in 2001. Bus was a 32nd degree Mason
and a member of the Elks and American Legion. Bus loved to
fish and hunt, although neither fish nor fowl had too much
to fear.
He married Pearl Madison
of Goldfield on October 22, 1937. They would celebrate 65
years of marriage together.
Bus is survived by his sons, Fred (Vivian) and Nile (Tara);
grandchildren, Stephanie McAdams, Matthew (Jen) McAdams, Amy
(Chuck) Voltmer and Ann (Dave) Coble; four
great-grandchildren; brother, Milo (Milda) Shaffer; sister,
Maxine (Don) Ahrens; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and his wife, Pearl.
Bus's family would like to
thank the community for all the support and friendship
provided to Bus and Pearl during their many years in
Franklin County. We know that Bus has been celebrating in
Heaven, where the Cyclones win the National Championship
every year!

ALDEN—Bernard Carl Grimes, 87, of Alden, died on Monday,
September 24, 2007, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in
Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Friday, September 28, at the
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alden, with burial in the
Alden Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home in Alden was in
charge of the arrangements.
Bernard Carl Grimes, was born on June 15, 1920 at Fort
Dodge, the son of Carl and Josephine (Brown) Grimes. He
received his education in Fort Dodge, graduating from the
Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1938. Bernard was in the
U.S. Army and served his country during World War II in
Germany.
Bernard married Evelyn Vetter on August 11, 1948 at Manson.
Following their marriage they resided in Fort Dodge where
Bernard worked at Mitchell Lab as a dental technician for 40
years. Bernard and Evelyn bought the Alden Motel in 1967 and
have lived there ever since. Bernard retired in 1985.
He attended the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alden. Bernard
enjoyed spending his free time golfing, fixing things, and
spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Evelyn of Alden;
son, Gary Grimes Sr. and his wife, Cindy of Fort Dodge; a
daughter, Linda Zamora of Alden; five grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren, Tammy Miller and her husband, Brian and
their daughter, Katrina of Cedar Falls, Gary Grimes Jr. of
Cedar Falls, Melody Henderson and her husband, Matt and
their daughter, Lauren of Chandler, Arizona, Felicia Zamora
and her fiancée, Chris Van Wyk of Fort Collins, Colorado and
Joe Zamora and his wife, Jessica of Coralville; and one
sister, Dorothy Taylor of Fort Dodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert Eugene Johnson, was born on July 14, 1928, at his
parents’ home in Franklin County, the son of Clifford Melvin
and Edith Irene (Williams) Johnson. He was baptized on Palm
Sunday. He attended the Brick Country Grade School in
Oakland Township and graduated from the Popejoy High School
with the class of 1947.
On December 25, 1949, Bob was united in
marriage to Muriel Lucille Dawson at her parents’ home in
Dows. To this union six children were born, James, Raymond,
David, Thomas, Jerry and Janet. Bob worked for International
Harvester as a mechanic, shop foreman and later for Case IH.
After retiring Bob combined for the Jordahls and traveled
with Muriel to 47 states and Canada delivering motor homes.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa
Falls and the Meadow Hills Golf Club, having served on
their board of directors for many years.
Bob Johnson is survived by his wife, Muriel Johnson of Iowa
Falls; his children, Jim (Tana) Johnson of Coal City, Illinois,
Ray (Lorae) Johnson of West Des Moines, Dave (Jodi) Johnson
of Lynnville, Tom (Rhonda) Johnson of Iowa Falls, Jerry
(Teresa) Johnson of North Manchester, Indiana and Janet (Mike)
Thompson of Boise, Idaho; 18 grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; and one sister, Pat Schumacher of
Alden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and

married Marion Jones on January 19, 1935 at Iowa Falls,
where the couple made their home 2 miles east on Highway
D15.
Bonnie was a homemaker and a mother, as well as someone who
was involved with the operations on the farm. She had also
worked at the Junction Cafe for several years. She was a
member of the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls.
Survivors include her sons, Jerry Jones and wife, Linda of
Bellevue, Nebraska, Ron Jones and wife, Marianne of Iowa
Falls and Don Jones and wife, Dinah of Iowa Falls; seven
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Inez
Hanson and husband, Elmer of Roswell, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion; three
sisters, Beulah Hensing, Cecil Mardick and Nell Bryant; and
one brother, Kenneth Brown.

ACKLEY—LeRoy D. Huesman, 68, of Parker, Colorado and
formerly of Ackley, died on Saturday, September 29, 2007, at
the Littleton Adventist Hospital in Littleton, Colorado.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday,
October 6, at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church, rural
Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will
be from 6-8:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Sietsema Funeral Home
in Ackley.

RADCLIFFE—Roger Zahrt, 71, died on Saturday, September 29,
2007, at his home in Radcliffe.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 2, at the
Stavanger Lutheran Church in Garden City, with the Rev. Earl
Korhonen officiating. Burial was in the Radcliffe Cemetery
in Radcliffe. The Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe was in
charge of the arrangements.
