IOWA FALLS—Leonard Charles Harms, 79, of Iowa Falls, died on
Friday, June 1, 2007, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in
Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 5, at the First
Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa Falls, with
burial in the Alden Cemetery. Full Military Rites were
provided by the Iowa Falls American Legion Post No. 188. The
Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls was in charge of the
arrangements.
Leonard was born on December 30, 1927 in rural Alden, the
son of John and Emma (Lettow) Harms. He attended the Meadow
Green Country School District No. 10 and graduated from the
Alden High School in 1946. Leonard served in the U.S. Army
in Germany from 1951-53.
He was united in marriage to Lois Mae Murra on April 10,
1955, at the St. John’s United Church of Christ in Ackley.
Leonard was a farmer, retiring in 1991.
He and Lois enjoyed traveling. He was a lifelong member of
the United Church of Christ in both Alden and Iowa Falls,
and he was a very active member and board member of the
Alden church. He was a member of the American Legion for
more than 50 years, with both the Collins-Dunning American
Legion Post No. 201 of Alden and the Hyman-Peavey American
Legion Post No. 188 of Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls Elks Club
B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1674, he was on the ASCS Committee for 10
years, and he was a Drainage Trustee of District 18 of Alden
Township for 30 years.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Lois; two daughters, Cheryl
Kay Rankin and husband, Jack of Iowa Falls and Cathi Ann
Perlenfein and husband, Thomas of Eagan, Minnesota; a son,
Robert (Bob) Charles Harms of Alden; four grandsons, Mark
Rankin and wife, Alicia of Iowa Falls, Matthew Rankin of
Jacksonville, Illinois, Steven Perlenfein of Eagan and Scott
Perlenfein of Eagan; two great-grandchildren, Riley Rankin
and Karaline Rankin; and two brothers, Delmar W. Harms and
Wm. Earl Harms, both of Alden.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Verla
Sielaff; a cousin, Marlys Shearer; and many fond family and
friends who have passed.

RADCLIFFE—Mae Wegner, 96, formerly of rural Radcliffe, died
on Friday, June 1, 2007, at her assisted living apartment in
Sergeant Bluff.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 6, at 1:30
p.m., at the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Hubbard, with the Rev. Matthew W. Rueger officiating. Burial
will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Radcliffe. The
Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard is in charge of the
arrangements.

OWASA—Emma Hazelwood Hoekstra, 71, of Owasa, passed away on
Sunday, June 3, 2007, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital,
Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday,
June 6, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with
Pastor Ward Richards Jr. officiating. Private burial will be
at a later date in the Berlin, Jackson Cemetery, Owasa. The
Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, is in charge of the
arrangements.
Emma Louise Polley, was born on September 11, 1935, the
daughter of Charles and Ester (Granzow) Polley. She attended
the Owasa Community Schools.
On September 17, 1950, she was united in marriage to Albert
Lee Hazelwood at the Berlin Church, Jackson Township, Hardin
County. To this union four children were born, Jerry, Dea
Linda, Thomas and Paul. Several years after the death of her
husband she was united in marriage to Wendell Hoekstra on
June 22, 1996, at the Owasa United Methodist Church.
Emma was employed at Winks, Inc., Eldora, for many years,
and was also caretaker of the Owasa Town Hall. Emma was a
member of the Owasa United Methodist Church, the Steamboat
Rock Boat Club, the Owasa Birthday Club, and the Owasa “Do
Nothing” Needlecraft Club. She had made more than 500 quilts
during her lifetime.
Emma Hoekstra is survived by her husband, Wendell Hoekstra
of Owasa; her children, Dea Linda (Donald) Boren of
Beaufort, South Carolina, Thomas (Gloria) Hazelwood of Fort
Madison and Paul Hazelwood of Buckeye; three step-children,
Allan (Patricia) Hoekstra of Coconut Creek, Florida, Timothy
(Cindy) Hoekstra of Eldora and Benjamin Hoekstra of Iowa
Falls; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister,
Wilma Terveer of Hubbard; and one brother, Charles Polley of
Marshalltown.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ester
Polley; her first husband, Albert Hazelwood; one son, Jerry
Lee Hazelwood; one brother, Donald Polley; and one sister,
Doris Sinning.

ESTHERVILLE—Howard L. Johnson, 83, passed away on Tuesday,
June 5, 2007, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday,
June 9, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville, with
Pastor Glenn Bohmer officiating. Interment will be in the
East Side Cemetery, Estherville, with Military Graveside
Rites provided by the VFW Post 3388 and the American Legion
Post 91, Estherville. The Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel,
Estherville, is in charge of the arrangements.
Howard L. Johnson, the son of Burt and Anne (Moltzen)
Johnson, was born on October 7, 1923 in Dolliver. He
received his education in the Dolliver School and graduated
from the Dolliver High School in 1943. He served in the U.S.
Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge from
military service, Howard returned to the area, farmed west
of Dolliver and drove a milk truck for Northwest Milk
Express.
On October 8, 1950, he was united in marriage to Janet
Klein. In his leisure time he enjoyed golfing, going to
casinos, and the Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball
games. He also enjoyed the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota
Twins, Chicago Cubs, White Sox, ballroom dancing and playing
500. Janet died on June 27, 1997.
Howard was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and a
lifetime member of VFW Post 3388.
Grateful for having shared Howard’s life is his daughter,
Barbara Brown and husband, Don of Iowa Falls; three
granddaughters, Nicole Peterson and husband, Dan of Fairbank,
Natalie Felton and husband, Dave of Manchester and Ashly
Brown of Iowa City; six great-grandchildren, Maddison,
Landon, Claire and Keegan Peterson and Kayla and Noah
Felton; and one sister, Bonnie Smith of Estherville.
Preceding Howard in death were his wife; parents; one
brother, Richard; and one sister, Geraldine Johnson.

IOWA FALLS—Delbert E. Mitterer, 77, of Iowa Falls, passed
away on Thursday, June 7, 2007, at the Heritage Care Center,
Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday,
June 9, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with
burial in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Delbert Eugene Mitterer, was born on July 26, 1929 at New
Providence, the son of Elmer and Eva (Reed) Mitterer. He
attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools graduating with
the class of 1947.
On October 5, 1952, he was united in marriage to Clare Mae
Risius at Iowa Falls. To this union three children were
born, Richard, Pamela and Diane. He worked for Iowa Lime,
Alden, for a number of years and then for Farmland Foods,
Iowa Falls, retiring in 1987. He was a former member of the
Iowa National Guard.
Delbert Mitterer is survived by two daughters, Pamela
(Richard) Crawford of Iowa Falls and Diane Thies of Nevada,
Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Mitterer of Iowa Falls;
seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Eva
Mitterer; his wife, Clara Mitterer; his son, Richard
Mitterer; one sister, Shirley Hammarmeister; and one
brother, Lester Mitterer.

LE MARS—Edna L. Jensen, 98, of Le Mars, passed away on
Thursday, June 7, 2007, at the St. Luke’s Regional Medical
Center in Sioux City.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 11, at the St.
John Lutheran Church in Merrill. Burial followed in the
Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. The Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home
of Le Mars was in charge of the arrangements.
Edna Louise Jensen, was born on February 20, 1909, on the
family farm one mile north of Adaville, the daughter of
Clarence and Elizabeth (Labahn) Norton. She received her
elementary education in Merrill and graduated from the
Merrill High School in 1928. Edna later earned a business
degree from the National Business Training School in Sioux
City. Following her education she worked as a bookkeeper in
Merrill.
In 1930 Edna and Clifford Jensen were united in marriage at
Storm Lake. The couple made their home on the Jensen family
farm and later on a farm one mile north of Adaville. They
farmed and raised their children near Adaville. Clifford
passed away in 1964. Edna moved to Merrill and worked for
Dr. L. Stribley as an office manager until she was 80 years
old. In 2002 Edna moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars.
She greatly enjoyed her stay at Park Place.
Edna was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church in
Merrill. She taught Sunday School and was active in Ladies’
Aid and Circle. She was active in 4-H, Garden Club, and was
a member of Farm Bureau. Her life revolved around her church
and family.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Coyla
Andresen of Sioux City and Carol Heinzeroth of Alden;
grandchildren, Suzanne Kolbo and husband, John of Sioux
City, Kristi Harmeier and husband, Dan of Sioux City, Rhonda
Wieben and husband, Michael of Colorado Springs, Colorado,
Sonja Nielsen and husband, Kirk of Sergeant Bluff, Lynne
Thomson and husband, William of Westwood, Kansas, Greg
Heinzeroth and wife, Genail of Fort Dodge, Todd Heinzeroth
of Denver, Colorado, Jill Musson and husband, Troy of
Shawnee, Kansas and Joel Heinzeroth and wife, Codi of Elgin,
Oklahoma; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents; husband;
sons-in-law, Wayne Andresen and Ervin Heinzeroth; and a
grandson, Scott Heinzeroth.

STEAMBOAT ROCK—Mary E. Taylor, 82, of Steamboat Rock, died
from natural causes on Saturday, June 9, 2007, at the
Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday,
June 13, at the First Baptist Church in Eldora, with Dr. Bob
Domokos and Pastor Gordon Taylor officiating. Burial will
follow in the Berlin Cemetery (Jackson Township Cemetery)
near Owasa. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora is in
charge of the arrangements.
Mary was born on August 29, 1924 in Eldora, the daughter of
William and Ethel (Doud) Allen. She attended the Eldora
School System where she graduated with the class of 1942.
On February 5, 1943, Mary was united in marriage to Ray
Taylor and they made their home near Steamboat Rock. To this
union four children were born, Gordon, Laura, Karol and
Jean.
Mary was involved as part owner-operator of Karol Ann’s
Clothing Store in Eldora, with her daughter Karol Ann, from
1975–1989. She was also very active in the First Baptist
Church in Eldora, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday
School and Bible School, and working with the youth group.
She also served as President of the Legislative Ladies
League of Iowa and the Iowa Senate Wives Organization. She
was a member of the Republican Women, and a former member of
the Kountry Klub (a rural neighborhood club).
Mary was well known for her hospitality and her pie baking.
She enjoyed sewing and cross-stitching, and sang at an
estimated 200 funerals with her husband, Ray.
Surviving is her husband, Ray; son, Gordon Taylor and wife,
Rayna of Port Byron, Illinois; daughters, Laura Hansmann and
husband, Paul of Taylorville, Illinois, Karol Rogers and
husband, Jack of Eldora and Jean Mahl and husband, Bob of
Anderson, Indiana; brothers, Frank (Wilma) Allen of Charles
City and Robert (Karlene) Allen of Norco, California;
sisters, Margaret Hanson of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Ruth
Johnson of Eldora; 11 grandchildren; and 14
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Arthur
Allen; and sister, Lillian Whiting.

WEBSTER CITY—Alfred A. Raska, 87, of Webster City, died on
Friday, June 15, 2007, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in
Ames.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday,
June 20, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Webster City, with
the Rev. Travis Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the
Buckeye Cemetery, Buckeye. Visitation is one hour prior to
the services at the church. The Foster Funeral & Cremation Center of
Webster City is in charge of the arrangements.
Alfred Albert Raska, son of Eric William “Ira” Raska and
Minnie Ratzke, was born on January 28, 1920 in Hardin County, on a
farm west of Alden. On February 26, 1949, he married Gretchen
Esther Goodyear at Buckeye. Mrs. Raska preceded him in death
on October 16, 1985.
Alfred served in the U.S. Army during
World War II as a tech-sergeant. The couple moved to Webster
City in 1963 from Buckeye. Alfred worked for the city of
Webster City for more than 18 years, retiring in the early
‘80s. He was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for many
years.
Mr. Raska is survived by his daughter, Joyce Dutcher of
Woolstock; grandchildren, Melissa of Des Moines and Matt
and wife, Misty Dutcher of Nevada; great-grandchildren, Abbie,
Sydney and Aiden; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Verner
and Mabelle of Webster City, Robert and Signe of Waterloo,
and Harley of Hephzibath, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother in
infancy; one sister; and son-in-law, Mark Dutcher.

LANCASTER, California—Frances Schafer, 91, a former resident
of Union, died on Friday, June 15, 2007, following a
prolonged illness at the Evergreen Arvin Health Care Center
in Arvin, California.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 21, at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lancaster, California. The Murphy Mortuary of Lancaster is in charge of
the
arrangements and interment will be in the Joshua Memorial Park.
Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in
Eldora.
Frances Reba Lawler, was born on May 10, 1916 in Eldora,
daughter of Frank and Theresa Lyons Lawler. She was raised
on a farm east of New Providence, where she graduated from
high school in 1933. She attended Iowa State Teachers
College in Cedar Falls and on June 21, 1937, married Carroll
J. Schafer at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Eldora.
During the first 20 years of their marriage, the couple were
engaged in farming, the final 16 years west of Union.
Frances was a 4-H Leader for many years, served on the Union
School Board of Education and was a longtime officer of the St.
Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society. She was instrumental in
beginning the hot lunch program at the Union Community
School in the 1940s.
In 1958, the family moved to Lancaster, California, where
Frances worked in women’s retail merchandising for 32 years.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she
served as Eucharistic Minister and was a daily communicant.
Frances was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America
for 40 years, serving as regent and in most other offices.
She was an oblate for St. Vincent’s Abbey for 27 years.
Following retirement in 1991, she volunteered at her church
and senior center.
Frances continued to live in Lancaster until March 2002,
when she became a resident of Oakdale Heights in
Bakersfield, California. The following year she entered the Evergreen
Arvin Health Care Center.
Surviving is one son, Allyn J. Schafer (Carolyn) of Eldora;
four daughters, Pat Amundson (Bill) of Waukee, Sheila
Perentis (Earl) of Morrisville, North Carolina, Connie York
of Lancaster, California and Coleen Eterno (Anthony) of
Bakersfield, California; 16 grandchildren; 27
great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Lawler (Mary Lou)
of Eldora; two sisters, Arlene Wright (Gene) of Anthon and
Marilyn Harvey of Monroe, Louisiana; and two sisters-in-law, Mary
Lawler of Eldora and Mary Ann Lawler of Colo.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll in
1989; her parents; five brothers, Kenneth and Lester, both
in infancy, and Lewis, Raymond and Verle; and two sisters,
Lucille Dakins and Mildred Walton.

YERINGTON, Nevada—Maxine Barton of Yerington, Nevada, died
on Sunday, June 17, 2007.
She was born on September 18, 1923, to Fred and Mollie Meyer
in Iowa Falls. She was a graduate of the Iowa Falls High
School. Maxine married Al Barton on February 16, 1963 in
Sacramento, California. They lived in Iowa Falls from 1975
to 1980 when they moved to Reno, Nevada and then moved to
Yerington in 1983. Al died August 18, 2004.
Surviving are five sisters, Freda Winter, Mildred Poland,
Wilma Wulke, Arlene Smit and Marilyn (Dean) Furman; one
brother, Leonard (Annabel) Meyer; and many nieces and
nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Al;
sister, Dorothy Bach; brother, Henry Meyer; sister-in-law,
Ruth Meyer; brothers-in-law, Edgar Winter, Robert Poland,
George Wulke, Gene Marken and Willard Smit.
Memorials may be sent to the Yerington Senior Center,

ALTOONA—Leah M. LaFee, 91, of Altoona, passed away on
Thursday, June 21, 2007, at the Altoona Nursing and Rehab
Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday,
June 23, at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont,
with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Friends may call at the
church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service time.

IOWA FALLS—John A. Turner, 75, of Gentry, Arkansas, formerly of
Iowa Falls, died on Friday, June 22, 2007, at the Siloam Springs
Memorial Hospital in Arkansas.
Funeral services were held on
Monday, June 25, at the Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs,
Arkansas. There will be a memorial service held at a later date
in Garner. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner is in charge of
the
local arrangements. Private family interment will take place
in Clarion at a later date.
John Andrew Turner, the son the son of John Eric and Rebecca
L. (Nelson) Turner, was born on April 23, 1932 in Adair. John
graduated from Iowa State University in Ames with a
bachelor’s degree in poultry science.
He was employed at
Kemp Feeds and then owned a grain facility in Galt. He also
worked as a turkey farmer and was currently the owner and
operator of a turkey compost business in Gentry. He was
previously married to Irma J. Turner of Bella Vista, Arkansas
for 50 years. He married Deborah Holzer on August 8, 2006 in
Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah of Gentry; four sons,
John E. Turner of Omaha, Nebraska, Jay C. Turner of St. Cloud,
Minnesota, James M. Turner of Waterloo and Joe A. (Mary) Turner
of Lincoln, Nebraska; two daughters, Janean L. (David) Fode of
Bella Vista, Arkansas and Jana L. Stensland of Ames; two
step-sons, Jesse W. (Molly) Benton of St. Louis, Missouri and
Benjamin G. (Angela) Benton of Gentry, Arkansas; one
step-daughter, Rebecca M. (Alan) Blake of Atlanta, Georgia; four
brothers, Harold (Lorraine) Turner of Spring Valley, Wisconsin,
Nelson R. (Joan) Turner of Wesley, William R. (Lois) Turner
of Charleston, South Carolina and James E. (Pat) Turner of Marion;
two sisters, Ann E. (Kent) Rudesill of Baldwin, Wisconsin and
Jean C. (John) Tessman of Garner; four brothers-in-law,
Brian Holzer, Joseph Holzer, Vincent Holzer and Leo Holzer;
two sisters-in-law, Cyrene Bastien and Carol Zlotnick; 12
grandsons; one granddaughter; two step-grandsons; four
step-granddaughters; two dear cousins, Howie and Shirley
Nelson of Walker and Vernon and Irene Fay of Hiawatha; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; and one sister, Ruth Camilla Turner.

IOWA FALLS—Chris Eugene Horton Jr., 33, of Iowa Falls,
passed away on Friday, June 22, 2007, at his home.
Funeral
services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, June 27,
at the Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls.
Chris Eugene Horton, was born on September 24, 1973, the son of
Chris Eugene Horton Sr. and Linda Lee (Rosine) Horton. He
attended the Eldora Community Schools and received his G.E.D.
from Harper’s Ferry. On September 18, 1999, Chris was united in
marriage to Nora “Peggy” Louise Crawford at Alden. He was
employed as a welder by County Line Engineering, Ackley.
Chris E. Horton is survived by his wife, Peggy Horton of
Iowa Falls; his mother, Linda Horton of Iowa Falls; his
brother, Mike Horton and fiancée, Mandy Crandel of Eldora;
his sister, Trisha Cole and husband, Roy of Iowa Falls; and
one nephew, Williamray Cole of Iowa Falls.
He was preceded
in death by his father, Chris Eugene Horton Sr.; his
maternal grandparents, Richard and Cecelia Rosine; and his
paternal grandparents, Lyle and Betty Horton.

IOWA FALLS—Marvin E. Anderson, 62, of Iowa Falls, passed
away on Saturday, June 23, 2007, at the Ellsworth Hospital,
Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 26, at the
Cottage Community Church, rural Iowa Falls, with burial
following at the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s
Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was in charge of the
arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Cottage
Community Church.
Marvin Edward Anderson, was born on March 23, 1945 in Iowa
Falls, the son of Edward E. and Leota Mae (Russell)
Anderson. He attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools.
He was employed first at Concrete Products, Iowa Falls, for
two years and then went to work for Iowa Limestone Company,
Alden, retiring in 2000 after more than 25 years of
employment. Marvin was a member of the Cottage Community
Church.
Marvin is survived by several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Leota
Anderson; and his grandparents.

IOWA FALLS—Tjada Swanetta Sweers, 97, of Iowa Falls, died on
Sunday, June 24, 2007, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in
Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday,
June 27, at the United Methodist Church in Alden, with burial
in the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to
the
services at the church on Wednesday, with family receiving
friends one hour prior to the services. The Surls Funeral Home
in Alden is in charge of the arrangements.
Tjada Swanetta Sweers, was born on August 20, 1909 in Alden,
the daughter of Avis and Fannie (VanGerpen) Sweers. She was
a graduate of the Alden High School and received her
teaching certificate from Ellsworth College. She taught
school at Buckeye.
Tjada was a member of the Alden Cemetery
Society and the United Methodist Church in Alden, where she
held various offices at church and was very active. She
taught the Cradle Roll Sunday School Class.
Tjada is survived by her two nieces, Elizabeth Janes and
husband, Robert of Ames and Carolyn Sweers of Lake Geneva,
Wisconsin; and two great-nephews, Jeff and Mike Janes.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Sweers;
and sister-in-law, Elma Sweers.

URBANDALE—Longtime Hardin County resident Pauline P. Wilson,
81, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2007.
Pauline established a successful real estate business in and
around Alden, Iowa Falls and Eldora. Throughout her life she
was active in church and community groups, and in particular
the Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary,
and Business and Professional Women’s Club. A memorial
service was held on Wednesday, June 27, at the Caldwell
Raddatz Funeral Home in Urbandale.

ROSEVILLE, California—Former Iowa Falls resident, Nels Elvan
Christensen, died on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at his home
in Roseville, California.
He chose to be cremated and there will be a private memorial
at a later date.
Elvan was born on a farm northwest of Iowa Falls on March
27, 1933, to Nels M. and Eva Mae (Clark) Christensen. He
attended Iowa Falls Schools and served in the U.S. Air Force
during the Korean War. He was employed for more than 30
years as a journeyman tool and die maker for IBM in San
Jose, California.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Priscilla; two
daughters; a son; two step-daughters; three step-sons and
their families, all of California.
In addition he is survived by a brother, Merle Christensen
of Pikeville, North Carolina; a sister, Carol Alt of Mason
City; aunts, Jessie Morton of Hubbard and Ruby Mills of
Rolla, Missouri; an uncle, Lewis Clark of Chariton; and
several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, June; a
brother, Marion; and a son, Nels Michael.

IOWA FALLS—Carmelita Van Buskirk, 52, of Iowa Falls, passed
away on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at her home.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, June 29, at
the St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s
Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel handled the arrangements.
Carmelita Ocampo Samson, was born on July 14, 1954, at
Inayawan, Philippines, the daughter of Floretino Samsom and
Maria Ocampo Samson. She attended school in the Philippines
and graduated from the Cebu City Institute, Cebu City,
Philippines.
On December 31, 1984, she was united in marriage to Lonnie
J. Van Buskirk at Iowa Falls. To this union four children
were born, Sharla, Vanezza, Kysha and Contessa. She had been
employed as an assistant lab technician for L.G.I.
Laboratories, Ellsworth.
Carmelita Van Buskirk is survived by her husband, Lonnie J.
Van Buskirk of Iowa Falls; three daughters, Vanezza Van
Buskirk, Kysha Van Buskirk and Contessa Van Buskirk, all of
Iowa Falls; four sisters, Julita, Lorna, Rowena and Lilia
and one brother, Warlito, all of Cebu City, Philippines.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Samson; an
infant daughter, Sharla Van Buskirk; two sisters, Lenita and
Josephine Samson; and four brothers, Edgar, Rael, Ricardo
and Adonis Samson.

IOWA FALLS—Viola Margaret Simpson, 89, of Iowa Falls, passed
away on Friday, June 29, 2007, at the Scenic Manor, Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 3, at the Linn’s
Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls. Burial followed in the Fairview
Cemetery, Dows.
Viola Margaret Pepper, was born on January 29, 1918, on the
family farm in Vernon Township, Franklin County, the
daughter of Henry Harrison and Ruth Margaret (Bailey)
Pepper. She attended the Dows Community Schools, graduating
from the Dows High School with the class on 1937.
On October 24, 1936, she was united in marriage to Dale
Gilman Simpson at Iowa Falls. She was a hairdresser, owning
Vi’s Beauty Shop for many years, retiring in 2004. Vi was a
longtime member of the First Congregational United Church of
Christ, Iowa Falls.
Viola Simpson is survived by her daughter, Marloene Loraine
Brown and husband, Leon of Sparks, Nevada; her son, Dale
Gilman Simpson Jr. and wife, Lily of Highland, Utah; six
grandchildren, David Martinez and wife, Christine of Taos,
New Mexico, Jeremiah Simpson and wife, Breanne of New York
City, New York, Matthew Simpson and wife, Melany of New York
City, Joshua Simpson and wife, Alicia of New York City, Rene
Clark and husband, Anthony of Highland and Dale Simpson III
and wife, Becky of Provo, Utah; five great-grandchildren,
Tatjana, Seppo and Terai Simpson of New York City and
Vanessa and Julie Martinez of Taos.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ruth
Pepper; her husband, Dale G. Simpson Sr.; a daughter, Loreen
Dail Simpson; and one sister, Charlotte Pepper Jenkins.

Vigars, 88, of Eldora, died on Saturday, June 30, 2007, at
the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

officiating. Burial followed in the Eldora City Cemetery,
with full military rites provided by the Walter-Sayer Post
