Two
canoeists drown at Alden
One survivor plucked from Iowa River
May 2, 2007
By Sara Konrad News Reporter
ALDEN-Two Iowa Falls men were killed on Sunday
evening after the canoe they were in was pulled into
rough waters under the dam at Alden.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources identified
the two men as Jonathan Hill, 26, and Drew
Goodknight, 22.
A third passenger in the boat, 26-year-old Levi
Wendland, also of Iowa Falls, escaped serious injury
when he was pulled from the river by Alden resident
Todd Dillon.
According to reports released Monday by the DNR, the
three men were paddling a canoe down the Iowa River.
Upon reaching the dam at Alden, they took the canoe
out of the river and walked it below the dam, where
they put the boat back in the water. Wendland
reportedly told officials the canoe was pulled back
into the churning water of the dam.
Dillon said he
happened to be driving around downtown Alden Sunday
evening when a woman flagged him down on Water
Street. He said when he reached the riverbank,
shortly after the boat capsized, he saw the canoe
and the three men in the water.
“I saw two of the
guys were stuck in the current and Drew (Goodknight)
was holding onto two life jackets in the water,”
said Dillon, 19, who said he knew Goodknight. “I
told Drew to hang onto the life jackets and I jumped
in the water to pull one of the other guys out. I
got him up on the rocks and started doing CPR. He
came around and then AMR (Ambulance) got there and
they started doing their thing.”
Dillon identified
the man he pulled from the water as Wendland. Dillon
said he went back to the river to look for
Goodknight and Hill, but they were gone.
Wendland
was transported to the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital
in Iowa Falls by AMR Ambulance. He has since been
discharged from the hospital.
DNR
officials reported none of the three canoeists were
wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
Even though the
water level below the dam was only deep enough to
reach Dillon’s stomach when he was standing in it,
he said the strong current of the water coming from
the dam knocked him over.
Iowa Falls
Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Barrick said his crew
responded to the call Sunday evening to assist the
Alden Fire Department.
Barrick
said his department used its new rubber raft rescue
boat for the first time on the call. It was launched
at the Alden landing, downstream from the dam, and
Barrick said it worked well in the search, despite
what he described as “rough and fast-moving” water.
The Hardin County
Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
The DNR is
continuing to investigate the incident.
