Rescue Attempts to no Avail in I.F. Woman’s Death

May 16, 2007

By Kent Thompson
Managing Editor

IOWA FALLS-A faulty electric lift chair was determined to be the cause of a blaze Thursday morning, May 10, 2007, which claimed the life of an Iowa Falls woman, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Iowa Falls Fire Chief Rick Gustin said it was not known if it was a faulty switch which caused a spark, or something in the wiring.

“All we can say for sure is that it started there,” Gustin said, as his department assisted the fire marshal’s office in pinpointing a cause.

Opal Norris, 87, died from injuries received in the blaze. Results of an autopsy being performed on Norris have not been released, but Gustin said indications are that Norris died from a combination of burns and smoke inhalation.

The Iowa Falls Police Department was first to arrive at the 805 Riverview Drive, Apt. 4, at approximately 10:18 a.m. Thursday.

Iowa Falls Police Chief Ron Kuhfus, Captain Dave McDaniel and Officer Brandon Trapp responded to the scene, and McDaniel entered the building and located where the smoke was coming from.

“The door was warm and he could hear the occupant calling for help,” Kuhfus said. “He opened the door and stood back, afraid of a fire flash. He entered the apartment but couldn’t see anything because of the thick smoke. He crawled on his hands and knees and was able to remove the woman from the apartment and he and Officer Trapp were able to carry her to the lawn,” Kuhfus said.

Norris was conscious and talking at the time she was taken from the apartment, Kuhfus said.

“It was a very heroic act on Dave’s part. It shows the caliber of people we have working in this department,” Kuhfus said.

Norris was taken to the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital by AMR Ambulance and later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital burn unit where she died at about 1:00 a.m. Friday morning.

Gustin was not certain, but the fire fatality may be the city’s first in 30 years. On April 10, 1977, a man and three children perished in an apartment fire on Talbott Street, one of three fatal fires in the span of 17 months in the mid-1970s, which also included two major downtown fires.
