Cozette "Cozy" A. Ramey

FRUITA, Colorado—Cozette Angela Ramey, 98, of Fruita, Colorado and formerly of Iowa Falls, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2006, at the Mesa Manor Care Center, Grand Junction, Colorado.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 5, at the Northeast Christian Church, with the Revs. Leland Griffin and Frank Dagley officiating. A graveside service was held at the Jackson Township Cemetery, Owasa, where she was laid to rest with her husband.

Cozy was born on June 2, 1908, to Charles and Sara Waltz Snyder at New Hampton. She attended schools in Iowa and graduated from the New Hampton High School. In 1926, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Wheat. Her son, Dirk was adopted and the couple were parents to a daughter, Betty. The couple farmed near Owasa and in 1951 were divorced.

Cozy married Harold Ramey on October 27, 1951 in Vermillion, South Dakota. They later moved to Grand Junction, Colorado.

Cozy was a member of the Northeast Christian Church. She enjoyed her children and received great joy from her 55 descendents.

Cozette is survived by her nine grandchildren, Sheryl Covington, Kent Polley and Donna (Chris) Lopez of Grand Junction, Craig (Teri) Polley of Whitewater, Colorado, Jeff (Shelly) Polley of Rangely, Colorado, Kathy (Jeff) Stafford of Lenoir, North Carolina, Tracy (Joy) Wheat of New Hartford, Marnae Tucker and Karyn (Dennis) Salmon of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Juanita Rudolph of Santa Monica, California and Bernita White of York, South Carolina; 26 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both of her children in October 2000; her husband, Harold on June 14, 1983; two sisters and three brothers; and one grandson, Ted Allen Wheat.

Howard Brooks Wenger

October 11, 1922-September 2, 2006

IOWA FALLS—Howard Brooks Wenger, 83, formerly of Hamburg and Iowa City, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2006, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday evening, September 7, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the United Trinity Church in Hamburg. Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 8, at 10:00 a.m., at the Hamburg Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is in charge of local arrangements.

Howard was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on October 11, 1922, to Ezra and Mame Brooks Wenger. He received his B.A. and J.D. Degrees from the University of Iowa. After serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Howard married Isobel Bailey Peterson on November 23, 1946 in Rockport, Missouri. She died in 1967. He married Helen Lee Hensleigh Fox on August 23, 1969 in Hamburg. She died in July 2006.

Howard practiced law in Hamburg for 40 years. He was very active in the bar association and many community groups. Howard served on the State Judicial Nominating Committee charged with selecting candidates for the Iowa Supreme Court and the Iowa Court of Appeals. He was appointed by the Iowa Supreme Court as examiner for the Iowa State Bar Admissions Examinations in 1985.

Howard retired to Iowa City in 1989 and was active in the arts and other organizations. Howard enjoyed golf, tennis and bridge and many years of foreign travel in Europe and Asia. He was a very generous person, a good friend to many and a loving and supportive family member.

Howard is survived by his three sons, Howard (Liz) of Iowa Falls, Stephen of San Diego, California and James (Pam) of Clay Center, Kansas; five grandsons, Chad, Ryan, Andrew, Joseph and Patrick; and a sister, Virginia Bagni of Sun City West, Arizona.

His parents; and brothers, John and Bill, preceded him in death.

Wilma Polzin

IOWA FALLS—Wilma Polzin, 70, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Home, Holstein.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, September 6, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the Alden Cemetery, Alden. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Sunday School or the St. Paul’s Lutheran Ladies Aid. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Wilma Lorraine Polzin, was born on January 7, 1936, at her parents farm near Alden, the daughter of Ernst H. and Esther W. (Bork) Polzin. She attended the Breezy Hill Country School through the eighth grade. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Alden, where she was baptized on March 22, 1936 and confirmed on May 20, 1951. She was employed by the Mid-Iowa Workshop at Marshalltown for many years.

Wilma Polzin is survived by her siblings, Lois Williams and husband, Dean of Williams, Mildred (Mick) Kramer and husband, Merle of Steamboat Rock, Edwin Polzin and wife, Charlene of Marshalltown and Richard Polzin and wife, Sue of Alden; a sister-in-law, Darlene Polzin of Iowa Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernst and Esther Polzin; her brother, Harold Polzin in 1991; her sister, Paula Polzin in 1999; a niece, Diane Kramer in 1959; and a nephew, Steven Williams in 1977.

Victor Lynn Steding
December 17, 1945-September 12, 2006

LATIMER—Victor Lynn Steding, 60, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at his home in Latimer.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 15, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer, with Pastor Tom Cofer officiating. Burial was in the Marion Township Cemetery. The Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home of Latimer was in charge of the arrangements.

Victor, the son of William Donald and Betty Mae Johnson Steding, was born on December 17, 1945 in Hampton. He was raised on a farm in the Coulter area. Victor attended the CAL Community School and graduated from CAL in 1964. He attended a Vocational School in Omaha, Nebraska and was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1965.

On January 27, 1968, Victor was united in marriage with Kathleen Hensel at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. Following their marriage the couple lived in Alexander where Victor was employed by the hatchery. They later moved to Latimer when Victor began his employment with the Coulter Elevator. He worked his way up becoming elevator manager, serving in this position for 30 years until June of 2006.

Victor especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, always looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Canada. The last several years, Victor enjoyed time spent with family and friends at Lake Pepin and Camp Lacupolis.

Victor was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 658 in Latimer and served on the Latimer City Council. He was a very active member of the Latimer community.

Victor is survived by his wife, Kathy of Latimer; daughter, Jane Betrice Eisbrenner of Urbandale; son, Matthew Steding and wife, Mary of Hastings, Minnesota; his mother, Betty Mae Steding of Latimer; four grandchildren, Jacob Eisbrenner, Leah Steding, Abigail Eisbrenner and Aaron Steding; brother, Mike Steding and wife, June of Longwood, Florida; sister, Jan Jorgensen and husband, LeRoy of Humboldt; and sister-in-law, Lisa Sterling of Orlando, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Donald; and infant brother, William.

Donald Lee Hanen
August 16, 1937-September 13, 2006

DES MOINES—Donald Lee Hanen, 69, of Des Moines, formerly of Iowa Falls, died on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at the Knoxville Hospital in Knoxville.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 16, at the Roberson Funeral Home in Eagleville, Missouri, with a luncheon following at the Eagleville Community Center. Interment was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Blythedale, Missouri.

Donald was born on August 16, 1937 in Iowa City, the son of Neil and Lillian Rose (Dingman) Hanen. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years in San Francisco, California. He worked for 15 years at the Rock Island Railroad in Iowa Falls. He later worked at Iowa Prestressed Concrete in Des Moines.

Survivors include his son, Bruce Hanen and wife, Nela of Crowley, Texas; daughter, Donna Johnson and husband, Curt of Iowa Falls; daughter, Jo Hanen of Grand Prairie, Texas; grandchildren, Cassie, Kayla and Cameron Johnson, and Alexandra and Victoria Hanen; sisters, Retha Parkhurst and husband, Ferris of Blythedale, Missouri and Janice Eivins and husband, Bradley of Lindon; and brother, Keith Chelvigs and wife, Esther of Lawrenceville, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Hanen.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice in care of the Roberson Funeral Home in Bethany, Missouri.

Gary Dean Allinson

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia—Gary Dean Allinson, died at home on Thursday, September 14, 2006, at the age of 64, after a brief illness.

He was born in Williams, son of the late Everette and Lucille Winnie Allinson. He was educated at the University of Iowa and Stanford University, from which he graduated with a Ph.D. in 1971. He taught Japanese history at the University of Pittsburgh from 1971 to 1983. He assumed the Ellen Bayard Weedon Chair of East Asian Studies at the University of Virginia in 1983 and was a member of the Corcoran Department of History until his death. During his career, he wrote five books and numerous articles dealing with the social, economic and political history of modern Japan. A dedicated teacher to his students, he was committed to high standards in his professional and personal lives.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; his son, Robin of Baltimore, Maryland; his brother, John Allinson of Franklin, Tennessee; and his sister, Jan Holtkamp of Williams.

A memorial gathering was held on Sunday, September 17.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, Charlottesville, Virginia.

John Lindley Pierce

GRIMES—John Lindley Pierce of Grimes, formerly of Iowa Falls, died on Saturday, September 16, 2006, at the Deerfield Nursing Center in Urbandale, at the age of 78.

John was born on November 19, 1927 in Eldora and grew up on a farm east of Iowa Falls. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1945. On June 10, 1949, he married Evelyn Lewis in Iowa Falls. They farmed for seven years and then in 1957, John started working at the Ralston Purina Co. in Iowa Falls. After 32 years at Ralston Purina, he retired in 1989. John and Evelyn moved to Grimes in 2004.

John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn. He is also survived by his daughters, Francine (Frank) Oppold, Suzanne (Charles) Kelsey; son, Joseph (Martha) Pierce; grandchildren, Ginny (Brian) Washburne, Jesse (Melanie) Kelsey, Mary Oppold, Keegan Kelsey, Michael Oppold and Anna Pierce; brother, Neil J. Pierce and wife, Audrey; sister, Donna Jones and husband, Paul; and sister-in-law, Donna Klein.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph John Pierce; and his mother, Marion Pierce Harris.

Memorial services will be held at the First Congregational UCC in Iowa Falls on Saturday, September 23, at 10:30 a.m.

Bessie F. Mulford

IOWA FALLS—Bessie F. Mulford, 95, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2006, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Private family services are being planned. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Bessie F. Classon, was born on February 9, 1911 at Ellsworth, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Ida (Olson) Classon. She graduated from the Popejoy High School with the class of 1929. On December 12, 1933, she was united in marriage to David Dickenson at Alden. To this union three children were born, Richard, Bernella and Judy. They were later divorced. On September 15, 1960, she was united in marriage to Milo Bernard Mulford at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. Bessie was employed as a receiving clerk for the J.C. Penney Company, Iowa Falls, for 20 years, retiring in 1976.

Bessie Mulford is survived by her children, Richard C. Dickenson and wife, Janeice of Annapolis, Maryland, Bernella Meyer and husband, Loren of Apple Valley, Minnesota and Judy Duffy and husband, Randall of Iowa Falls; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ralph Classon of Alden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ida Classon; her husband, Milo Mulford in 1973; and one brother, Curtis Classon.

Orville Burgess
October 25, 1914-September 19, 2006

ALDEN—Orville Burgess, 91, of Alden, died on Tuesday, September 19, 2006, at home.

There will be graveside services at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, September 23, in the Graceland Cemetery in Webster City. The Surls Funeral in Iowa Falls is in charge of the arrangements.

Orville Albert Burgess, was born on October 25, 1914 in Pontiac, Michigan, the son of George and Oneita (Gage) Burgess. He was united in marriage to Louise Moore on April 8, 1938 and after her death, he married Arlene Rankin Sharar on February 20, 1979.

Orville had worked as a car dealer for more than 40 years, retiring in 1984. He was a charter member of the Elks Club in Pontiac, a charter member of the Popejoy Lions Club and a member of the Iowa Falls Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 1331.

Orville is survived by his three grandsons, Kevin Matson and his wife, Kathy, Dan Matson and his wife, Cindy and Mike Burgess; two granddaughters, Cathy Matson and Valerie Burgess; three great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; a step-son, Larry Sharar and his wife, Leona of Dows; two step-daughters, Jan Hurd and her husband, Lloyd of Alden and Lee Jass and her husband, Mike of Garden Grove; eight step-grandchildren; and 10 great-step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Louise and Arlene; and a son, Harold Burgess.

Janet L. Skogerboe

IOWA FALLS-Janet L. Skogerboe, 71, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2006, at the Hubbard Care Center, Hubbard.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 28, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Brian King officiating. Burial was in the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.

Janet Lou Sampson, was born on March 11, 1935, on her parents farm near Roland in Story County, the daughter of Theodore and LaVonne (Holland) Sampson. She attended the Roland Community Schools. On March 21, 1953, Janet was united in marriage to Ronald William Skogerboe at Bethany, Missouri. To this union two sons were born, Terry and David. They lived in Iowa Falls for many years where she provided day care for children from her home to many area children and their children. She also was employed with the Iowa Falls Community Schools hot lunch program.

She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls. Janet was a loving mother and caregiver, and loved to play bingo.

Janet Skogerboe is survived by her husband, Ronald Skogerboe of Iowa Falls; two sons, Terry Skogerboe and wife, Susan of Pawcatuck, Connecticut and David Skogerboe and his wife, Kathy of Nevada; and four grandchildren, Steve, Emily and John Skogerboe of Pawcatuck, Dustin Skogerboe of Nevada; one sister, Shirley Knous and husband, Gary of Stratford; and one brother, Gary Sampson and wife, Sandy of Monticello.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and LaVonne Sampson.

Karinheide "Karin" Schaup
January 28, 1940-September 24, 2006

WALNUT CREEK, California-Born in Offenbach, Germany, Karinheide followed her fiancée, Ralf Schaup, to California where they were married on June 6, 1959. After raising her family, Karinheide completed her studies to become a teacher, a profession she pursued with great passion. She retired from the Antioch School District after teaching for 15 years, when cancer cut her career short three years ago.

Karinheide was an exceptionally positive person, a beloved teacher, a true friend, and above all, a devoted wife and mother. Her smile could light up a room. Her passing has left a huge void in the lives of her family and so many friends.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Ralf Schaup; daughter, Nicolette and son-in-law, Dave Smith with grandsons, Trevor and Caleb of Iowa; son, Bryan Schaup and daughter-in-law, Tara of Las Vegas and granddaughter, Haley. She is also survived by sister, Ellen-Ingrid and brother-in-law, Jo Baumans of Germany; along with many other relatives and friends all over the world who are feeling the loss of such a bright spirit.

A memorial service was held on Friday, September 29, 2006, at the Heather Farms Homeowners Association Clubhouse, Walnut Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Friends of the Orphans, P.O. Box 25507, Tempe, AZ 85285-5507, in Karin’s memory.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, September 30, at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, with the Rev. Matt Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Hazel Green Cemetery, rural Cleves, where full military rites will be provided by the Grundy Center American Legion Post No. 349 and AMVETS Post No. 17.
