Lt. Col. Robert M. Terry, USAF
(Retired)
December 30, 1920–December 27, 2005
May 3, 2006, page B-5
RADCLIFFE—Robert
Myron Terry was born into a large farming family near Blairsburg, on December 30,
1920. During his childhood the family moved to a farm near Radcliffe. After Bob
graduated from high school in Radcliffe he attended Iowa State University in
Ames. Sixty-four years ago, after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Bob became
an aviation cadet in the Army Air Corps. He attended pilot training in
California and Arizona and earned his pilot’s wings and commission as a Second
Lieutenant on July 26, 1942. Bob transferred to Sarasota, Florida, where he
continued training as a fighter pilot.
Near the end of 1942, Bob shipped out for England where he
received training in the British-built Spitfire. Following the Allied invasion
of North Africa in November of that year, he joined the American 31st Fighter
Group as a brand-new Spitfire pilot. He served with the 31st FG as they
supported the Allied advance across North Africa, the invasion of Sicily and
the eventual liberation of Italy. During his combat tour he flew 188 combat
missions, shot down two German FW-190s in aerial combat and was forced to bail
out over the Mediterranean when his engine failed. The Army Air Forces awarded
Bob the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters
for his combat achievements.
Bob returned to the United States in April 1944 and, during
leave at his home in Iowa, he began courting a young schoolteacher named Lois
Lake, who also had attended the Radcliffe High School a few years behind him. It was
a whirlwind romance and they were engaged to be married two weeks after their
first date. Their plan was to have Lois join Bob after he became settled at his
first stateside assignment in Mississippi. Oca Lake, Lois’ mother, suggested
that they marry instead in Radcliffe so the whole family would be able to
attend. So they became husband and wife on May 7, 1944, in the Methodist Church
in Radcliffe.
Bob decided to stay in the Air Force after the war was won
and he had a variety of flying assignments in Mississippi, South Dakota,
Germany, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Japan and back in Arizona. Along the way, Bob
and Lois added to their family with the births of James Garland, Michael Robert
and J. Scott. They also had a son named Steven Robert who, sadly, was stillborn.
Bob flew P-51s during the Allied Occupation of Germany and
he participated as a temporary co-pilot at the beginning of the Berlin Airlift
when things were really hectic. He also spent several years as a pilot training
instructor, flying the T-6. In the mid-1950s, Bob led a contingent of T-6
aircraft, instructors and student pilots for a short visit to Colorado Springs.
They operated out of the Pine Valley airport to confirm that pilot training
could be conducted there. Bob gave a “thumbs up” to the location and later
President Eisenhower signed legislation establishing the USAF Academy on that
site.
In 1956, Bob stepped into the jet age and qualified in the
F-86D all-weather fighter interceptor. He was assigned to the Yokota Air Base,
Japan, where the family lived for four years. Bob’s responsibilities rose in the
squadron, which was flying air defense alert missions to protect Japan against
Soviet and Chinese aggression and when he was reassigned to the United States
he was second in command. While in Japan, Bob was also very active in community
activities on base. He was the chairman of the Protestant Chapel Sunday School
Department and he held leadership positions in the Boy Scout organizations that
were in place for the dependents of the Air Force personnel stationed there. He
was awarded the “Silver Beaver” Award, the highest award given to a
non-professional scout, to honor and recognize his accomplishments.
Bob’s final assignment was as director of fighter operations
in the Phoenix Air Defense Sector at Luke AFB, Arizona, west of Phoenix. This
was the same base at which he was awarded his wings almost 20 years earlier. He
continued to fly T-33 jet trainers on target-simulation training missions until
he retired in 1964 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
After his retirement from the Air Force, Bob completed his
academic studies that had been interrupted by the Japanese when he was a young
man and he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education at Arizona
State University. He then began a second career as a history and social studies
teacher in Phoenix for 18 years until he retired a second time. During his
teaching career, Bob became well known as a negotiator for the teachers
association during salary talks with the district. Bob and Lois moved to Sun
City West, northwest of Phoenix, where they resided until 2001 when they moved
to Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Bob stayed busy during retirement. He wrote several
historical articles about early Army Air Corps flying and he completed a
multi-volume work that recounted his combat experiences for his family. Bob
found time to gather old lumber from the farmstead in Iowa and he turned the
wood into delicate jewelry boxes and other works of art. Bob and Lois traveled
extensively, visiting every state in the union and, until the very end, he
continued to enjoy telling the story about how he and Lois met.
Robert M. Terry, Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (Retired), is
survived by his wife; three sons and their wives, Carolyn Kellogg Terry, Debra
Niles Terry and Elizabeth Johnson Terry; six
grandchildren, Amanda Grosiak, Jennifer Terry, Kurt Walsh, Andrea Heliotes,
Douglas Heliotes and Amy Heliotes; three grandchildren-in-law; and two
great-grandchildren, Alexia Jacqueline Walsh and Ethan Douglas Heliotes.
He will be interred in the Radcliffe Cemetery with full
military honors on Sunday, May 7, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements were
made by the Boeke
Funeral Home, Radcliffe and Hubbard.
