AMES—Eva Lettow, 93, of Ames and formerly of Alden, passed
away on Friday, December 1, 2006, at the Israel Family
Hospice House, Ames.
Memorial services were held on Tuesday, December 5, at the
First United Methodist Church, Ames, with the Rev. Chuck
Kelsey officiating. Inurnment was in the Alden Township
Cemetery, Alden. The Linn’s Funeral Homes, Alden Chapel was
entrusted with the arrangements.
Eva Harms, was born on December 3, 1912 at Alden, the
daughter of Henry Peters and Cena (Sweers) Harms. She
graduated from the Alden Community Schools and attended Iowa
State University where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma
Delta sorority.
On June 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Waldemar
Otto “Spud” Lettow at Alden. Eva was a teacher and also did
bookkeeping work.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ames,
and a member of the church women’s circle. She was a member
of the Ames Lioness Club and the Ames Women’s Club. She
received the International Lions’ Melvin Jones award for her
introduction and development of the Lioness organization in
the state of Iowa.
Eva Lettow is survived by her daughter, Avis Pohl of Ames;
her son, Dennis Lettow and wife, Linda of West Des Moines;
five grandchildren, Bion Pohl of Austin, Texas, Cena Crane
and husband, William of Brooklyn, New York, Greg Lettow and
wife, Kristen of Olathe, Kansas, Julie Kosman and husband,
Kyle of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Jay Lettow of Des
Moines; and four great-grandchildren, Alden Crane of
Brooklyn, New York and Matthew Lettow, Paige Lettow and
Joshua Lettow, all of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Cena
Harms; her husband, Spud Lettow; three sisters, Gerta Baum,
Alieda Palmer and Janett Barnum; and two brothers, Rudolph
Harms and Richard Harms.

IOWA FALLS—Betty Jean Winters, 83, of Iowa Falls, passed
away on Saturday, December 2, 2006, at the Scenic Manor Care
Facility.
Private family graveside services
were held on Monday, December 4, at the Union Cemetery, with
the Rev. Dr. John Chappel officiating. The Linn’s Funeral
Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.
Betty Jean Gaulke, was born on March 6, 1923 at Dows, the
daughter of Elmer Albert and Elsie Mae (Hackley) Gaulke. She
graduated from the Iowa Falls High School with the class of
1941.
On May 17, 1942, she was united in marriage to Clyde R.
“Bounce” Winters at Bethany, Missouri. To this union one
son, Gary was born.
Betty worked as a retail store clerk for Dorothy’s Fashion
and Molly Hummers in Iowa Falls.
She was a member of the
American Legion Auxiliary No. 188, Iowa Falls and a former
member of the Ladies of the Moose, Iowa Falls.
Betty Jean Winters is survived by her husband, “Bounce”
Winters of Iowa Falls; her son, Gary Winters and wife,
Christine of St. Joseph, Missouri; four grandchildren, Todd
Winters and wife, Stacey of Olathe, Kansas, Matthew Winters
of Overland Park, Kansas, Gina Boyd and husband, Brian of
Denver, Colorado and Maggie Miller and husband, Ben of St.
Joseph, Missouri; six great-grandchildren, Jack Winters of
Olathe, Kansas and Aidan, Noah and Daniel Boyd of Denver,
Colorado and Sam and Jake Judah of St. Joseph, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Elsie
Gaulke; and two brothers, Kenneth Gaulke and Clair Gaulke.

IOWA FALLS—Brian Barhite, 47, of Iowa Falls, died on Sunday,
December 3, 2006, at his home, after a long battle with
cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday,
December 7, at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls, with
burial in the Alden Cemetery. Visitation is planned for
4-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, with family receiving friends
from 6-8:00 p.m., at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
Brian James Barhite, was born on May 13, 1959, and adopted
by Charles Ivan and LaVonne Sue (King) Barhite. He received
his education in Iowa Falls and graduated from the Iowa
Falls High School with the class of 1977.
Brian married Tamara Ann Pilchard on April 13, 1980, at the
First Christian Church in Iowa Falls. Brian worked for Iowa
Falls Roofing, Concrete Products and Ellsworth Community
College. He also owned his own business, B. B. Handy, later
driving a truck for the Decker Truckline and Hawkeye Leisure
Trailers.
Brian loved to help his wife garden as well as doing the
fall canning for their winter supply of vegetables and
spaghetti sauce. He enjoyed drag racing and spent four years
building a 1972 Dodge Demon. Brian will be remembered as a
fun-loving guy spending time with his granddaughters and as
a person who would help anyone in need.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Tamara of Iowa
Falls; sons, James Ivan Barhite and wife, Dana and Jason
Brian Barhite, all of Iowa Falls; step-daughter, Michelle
Marie Meyer and husband, Heath of Iowa Falls; granddaughter,
April Izer Barhite of Popejoy and Iowa Falls;
step-granddaughter, Veronica Elbert of Iowa Falls;
half-brother, Mark Hilding and friend, Megan and his
daughter, Chelsa of Troy, Missouri; half-sister, Michelle
Turner and husband, David and their children, Alex, Taylor
and Whitney of Foristell, Missouri; his birth mother,
Dorothy Hilding and husband, Kenny; aunts, Maryjean
Kinsinger of Iowa Falls and Tottie (May) King of Bullhead
City Arizona; uncle, Lee King and his wife, Bernice of
Chicago, Illinois; mother and father in-law, Robert and Eve
Pilchard; brothers and sisters-in-law, Chris and Tayna
Pilchard and their children, Monica and Miranda of Everett,
Washington, Todd and Tracy and their children, Brittany and
Brandon of Geneva and Teresa Hillis and husband, Glenn of

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, LaVonne

the Rev. T.J. Norman officiating. Burial will be in the

Betty Jean Tjarks, was born on March 23, 1927 in Franklin
County, the daughter of Minn O. and Agnes (Andersen) Tjarks.
She attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools. On April 24,
1955, she was united in marriage to Kenneth E. Trittien in
Freeborn County, Minnesota.
Betty was a waitress and cook for many places in Iowa Falls.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls,
the Christian Women’s Fellowship and the Women of the Moose
Lodge No. 1331, Iowa Falls.
Betty Jean Trittien is survived by her husband, Ken Trittien
of Iowa Falls; two sisters, Gladys Norris of Iowa Falls and
Edna Mae Baker of Iowa Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Minn and Agnes
Tjarks; and one brother, Russell Tjarks.

Jerry Lee King, was born on July 7, 1937 at Iowa City, the
son of Edward August and Leah Amelia (Riley) King. He
attended the Georgetown Country School. He worked for
Mid-Iowa Workshop, at Iowa Falls, Marshalltown and Hampton.
Jerry King is survived by three sisters, Betty Riebkes and
husband, Elmer of Alden, Grace Hornung of Iowa Falls and
Rose Bahr of Hubbard; one brother, Cecil King and wife,
Norma of Centralia, Missouri; and one brother-in-law, Lloyd
Carlson of Mira Loma, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Leah
King; two brothers, Lawrence King and Harold King; two
sisters, Mae Carlson and June King; and two brothers-in-law,
Ralph Hornung and Richard Bahr.

Marlys June Newhall, was born on June 18, 1927 in Hardin
County, the daughter of George W. and Emma (Bessman)
Newhall. She attended the Maple Grove County School and
graduated from the Iowa Falls High School with the class of
1944.
On October 9, 1969, she was united in marriage to Harold
Zorn. She was an office secretary for Dr. F. N. Cole of Iowa
Falls, the Farmers Co-op Elevator and Scenic Manor, Iowa
Falls. She had previously worked for the Woods Hotel and the
Iowa Falls Credit Bureau.
She was a member of the Immanuel
Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls and the American Legion
Auxiliary No. 188, Iowa Falls.
Marlys Zorn is survived by her husband, Harold Zorn of the
Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls; one sister, Jan Anway of
Eldora; two brothers, Kenneth Newhall and wife, Kathlyn of
Iowa Falls and Lowell Newhall and wife, Marrian of Dumont; a
stepson, Victor Zorn and wife, Mary of Williams; two
step-daughters, Peggie Van Den Brink and husband, Gary of
Spirit Lake and Karen Nichols and husband, Royce of Hubbard;
two step-grandchildren, Jamie Corbin and Jeremy Mersman; two

ELDORA-Blanche L. Saint, 86, of Eldora, died from natural
causes on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at the Valley View
Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 8, at the
First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, with
the Rev. Corey Larson officiating. Burial followed in the
Eldora City Cemetery. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora
was in charge of the arrangements.
Blanche was born on December 26, 1919, at home in rural
Green City, Missouri, the daughter of Allen and Addie
(Roush) McGill. As a youngster, Blanche and her family moved
to Hardin County.
On November 7, 1936, Blanche was united in marriage to Erwyn
Saint at the Church of Christ in Eldora. After their
marriage, they made their home in rural Eldora.
Blanche’s husband, Erwyn died in 1990, and she continued to
make Eldora her home. Blanche was a member of the First
Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora. She was a
wonderful housekeeper and mother who was loved by all.
She is survived by two daughters, Corrine Christian and her
husband, Ray of Des Moines and Joanne Smith of Eldora; one
son, Ron Saint of Orange, California; four grandchildren,
Jason Smith and his wife, Kellie of Eldora, Stacey Frerichs
of Clarion, Heather Saint of Orange, California and Tina
Silva of Eldora; four great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Silva,
Hannah Frerichs, Justyn Smith and Olyvia Smith; one
sister-in-law, Dorotha McGill of Centerville; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Erwyn;
one grandson, Ron Saint Jr.; six sisters, Roxie, Lola, Ona,
Bertha, Sally and Hazel; and five brothers, George, Bill,
Ora, Virgil and Milton.

the arrangements.
Angie Elizabeth Peterson, was born on September 8, 1906 in
Williams, the daughter of Charles Madden and Ida (Haines)
Madden.
On February 11, 1925, she was united in marriage to Elmer
Peterson in Webster City.
She enjoyed working for her church
and community, playing cards, hand work, knitting and
crocheting.
She was a member of the Cemetery Society, Senior Citizens,
Women’s Club, Church Society and a member of the United
Methodist Church in Alden.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Peterson and wife,
Lindsay of Duncombe; and grandchildren, Alan Peterson,
Denise Tougas, Kevin Peterson, Arlan Peterson, Michael
Peterson and Scotti Peterson.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three
sisters; and two brothers.

IOWA FALLS—Adolph Sevde, 89, of Iowa Falls, passed away on
Friday, December 8, 2006, at the Ellsworth Hospital, Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 11, at the
Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls. Burial was in the
Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls, with military
honors provided by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No.
188, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel
was entrusted with the arrangements.
Luther Adolph Sevde, was born on January 13, 1917 at
Radcliffe, the son of Ole M. and Lottie (Sporland) Sevde. He
attended the Country School.
He served with the U.S. Army from January 14, 1941 to July
23, 1945 during World War II, serving with the 4th Recon
Mechanical Squadron at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes,
Rhineland and Central Europe battles in the European,
African and Middle Eastern Theater.
On August 12, 1943, he was united in marriage to Martha
Marie Tynning at her parents home in Story City. He was
employed at the Roland Elevator, owned the Sevde Shell
Station, Story City, the Westside Mobile Station, Iowa
Falls and the Sevde Mac Tool Company.
He was a member of the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No.
188, Iowa Falls and a former member and board member of the
Meadow Hill Golf Club, Iowa Falls. He loved fishing,
woodworking and golfing.
Adolph Sevde is survived by his wife, Martha M. Sevde of
Iowa Falls; two sons, Harley D. Sevde of Iowa Falls and Gary
P. Sevde and wife, Cynthia of Atkins; one daughter, Linda M.
Fank of Iowa Falls; four grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; and one sister, Lillian Steubach of Dana
Point, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Lottie
Sevde; one brother, Ernest Sevde; and one son-in-law,
Clarence Fank.

IOWA FALLS—Nathan Keninger, 19, of Iowa Falls, passed away
on Friday, December 8, 2006, at the University of Iowa
Hospital in Iowa City, due to complications of Duchenne
Muscular Dystrophy.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 12, at the
Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the
St. Mark’s Catholic Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral
Home in Iowa Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
A memorial fund has been established and may be directed to
the MDA Association c/o Regina Keninger, 912 River St., Iowa
Falls, IA 50126.
Nathan Lee Keninger, was born on March 21, 1987 at Iowa
Falls, the son of Mark and Regina (Johnson) Keninger. He
received his education at Iowa Falls and graduated from the
Iowa Falls High School with the class of 2005. Nathan was
currently attending Ellsworth Community College.
He was a member of the St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Iowa
Falls. Nathan enjoyed anything with computers, especially
designing Web pages and hosting online tournaments. He was
actively involved with MDA fundraisers and enjoyed his time
with his family and faithful companions Oreo and Jenny.
Survivors include his mother, Regina Keninger of Iowa Falls;
his father, Mark Keninger of Ackley; brother, Trevor
Keninger of Iowa Falls; sister, Holli Keshwani and husband,
Dinesh of West Des Moines; maternal grandparents, Henry and
Eileen Johnson of Parkersburg; and paternal grandfather,
Joseph Keninger of Ackley.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother,
Beverly Keninger.

Earl V. Hofsommer

DOWS—Earl V. Hofsommer, 86, of Dows, passed away on Friday,
December 8, 2006, at the Hampton Health Care Center in
Hampton.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, December 14, at the
Morgan United Methodist Church, Dows, with the Rev. David
Gobeli officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery,
Dows. The Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home in Dows was in
charge of the arrangements.
Earl Vernie Hofsommer, son of Charles and Gladys (Carpenter)
Hofsommer, was born on January 27, 1920 near Dows. Earl
attended country school near Dows, later moving to Rowan
where he attended school there.
On September 8, 1940, Earl was united in marriage to June
Holmes. They are the parents of two children. Earl worked as
a mechanic for two years and began farming in 1942. Earl
also raised hogs and cattle for many years. He had his own
seed business for 41 years.
Earl loved machinery, his shop and creating and inventing
tools. He had the mind of an engineer. He built many things,
the last project that he finished was a backhoe for his skid
loader. He also built an electric Ferris wheel for his
great-grandchildren who loved riding on it. Earl
experimented with raising emu for a short time, which was
fascinating to many.
Earl loved taking June to Branson, Missouri, where they
celebrated many wedding anniversaries. Earl was a member of
the Morgan United Methodist Church where he served on many
committees, a member of the Dows Lions Club, and soil
commissioner for several years. He loved bowling,
basketball, watching his great-grandchildren play sports,
and listening to them sing and play music. Above all, he
enjoyed spending time with his family and thoroughly enjoyed
his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Earl is survived by his wife, June; his son, Dean (Sandra)
Hofsommer of Story City; his daughter, Mary (Bob) Moody of
Battle Ground, Washington; three grandchildren, Sherry
(Kevin) Ellis of Dows, Carry (Jason) Sanderson of Lincoln,
Nebraska and Jason Earl (Marcia) Hofsommer of Story City;
seven great-grandchildren, Kenley Ellis, Keldon Earl Ellis,
Korey Ellis, Alanna Sanderson, Shelby Sanderson, Amanda
Hofsommer and Nicholas Hofsommer; his sister, Margaret
Dubois of Memence, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; his sister,
Evelyn; and three brothers, Walter, Roy and Dale.

86, of Radcliffe, died on Saturday, December 9, 2006, at the
Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, from injuries sustained
in an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 12, at Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, with burial in the
Radcliffe Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe was
in charge of the arrangements.

One Dead Following
Hubbard Collision
December 13, 2006
HUBBARD-The collision of a car and a semi Friday
resulted in the death of a Radcliffe woman Saturday.
According to a report from the Hardin County
Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened at about
2:45 Friday afternoon at the intersection of
Highways 65 and 175 in Hubbard.
A semi, being driven by 36-year-old William Widlacki
of Grinnell, was traveling south on Highway 65 when
it struck a car being driven by Lillian Guard, 86,
of Radcliffe. Guard was westbound on Highway 175
when she pulled out from a stop sign into the path
of Widlacki’s semi.
Widlacki was not injured. Guard was transported by
ambulance to Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa
Falls. She died on Saturday at the Mary Greeley
Medical Center in Ames.
The accident remains under investigation. The Hardin
County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Hubbard
Ambulance, Hubbard Fire, AMR and the Hardin County
E-Squad.

home while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice and her
family.

the Faith Presbyterian Church in rural Ackley, with the Rev.
Tim Diehl and the Rev. Allen McClure officiating. Burial
will follow in the Faith Presbyterian Church Cemetery in
rural Ackley. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from

Robert L. Harper

NEW HARTFORD—Robert L. Harper, 74, of New Hartford and
formerly of Iowa Falls, died of mantle cell lymphoma on
Tuesday, December 12, 2006, at the Allen Memorial Hospital
in Waterloo.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday,
December 16, at the New Hartford United Methodist Church.
Interment will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery, near
New Hartford. The Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in
charge of the arrangements.
Robert was born on May 18, 1932 in Iowa Falls, the son of
Lyle H. and Clara (Klopp) Harper. He married Marlene Bailey
on January 13, 1951 in Des Moines. He was a graduate of the
Iowa Falls High School and farmed near Iowa Falls and New
Hartford. Robert was also an independent truck driver and a
member of the New Hartford United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene of New Hartford; two
sons, Michael (Barb) Harper of New Hartford and Jack
(Karolyn) Harper of Prairie City; a daughter, Karen (Jerry)
Nielsen of Dike; eight grandchildren, Shelly Horak, Amy Jo
(Shane) Warnke, Matthew (Alicia) Harper, Kandice Harper,
Chad Harper, Daniel Nielsen, Nick Nielsen and Katie Nielsen;
five great-grandchildren, Adam Warnke, Grace, Wil and Nile
Horak and Ruby Harper; a sister-in-law, Amy Bailey of
Hiawassee, Georgia; and five nephews, David (Joanne) Beall,
John Beall, Richard (Jody) Waggoner, Mark Waggoner and
Andrew (Carrie) Waggoner.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter,
Kristi Gibbs; and a sister, Joan Beall.

HUBBARD—John Philip Michaelson, 87, died on Tuesday,
December 12, 2006, at the Minnesota Masonic Home in
Bloomington, Minnesota.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 16, at
1:30 p.m., at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard.
Burial will be in the Hubbard Cemetery. There will be no
visitation. The Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard is in charge
of the arrangements.
John Philip Michaelson, was born on December 28, 1918, on a
farm near Blue Earth, Minnesota. He was one of five children
born to John E. and Charlotte (Hendrickson) Michaelson.
He began his education in a rural school near Blue Earth.
When “Mike” was 9 years old, his father died and his family
moved to the Hubbard area in Iowa, where he graduated from
the Hubbard Community School in 1936. He attended and
graduated from the University of Iowa, which was interrupted
by four years of active duty in the U.S. Army. Mike was a
decorated veteran serving in Europe during World War II.
On October 24, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mary
Elizabeth Boeke at the Zion Church in Hubbard. He worked for
Remington-Rand (Unisys) for almost 30 years. He began his
own business, Office Systems Division, Inc., from which he
retired. He lived in Johnston for 16 years and moved to
Bloomington, Minnesota 11 years ago.
Those thankful for having shared his life include three
daughters, Kristin Michaelson of Roseville, Minnesota,
Elizabeth Trister of St. Paul, Minnesota and Margret
Michaelson and her husband, Paul Sylvestre of Minneapolis,
Minnesota; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Helen
Harrison of Hampshire, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; and
three sisters, Marjorie and Elaine Michaelson and Janice
Rieks.

ELDORA—John D. Meister, 80, of Eldora, died from natural
causes on Wednesday, December 13, 2006, at the Eldora
Nursing and Rehab Center.
Following cremation, private family memorial services will
be held at the Gifford United Methodist Church. The
Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora is in charge of the
arrangements.
John was born on February 7, 1926 in Manning, the youngest
son of John and Anna (Grau) Meister. John’s childhood years
were spent on a farm near Carroll. He often talked of his
childhood years with his pet dog, Shep. Shep is said to have
saved Johnnie (as he was called in his earlier years) from
drowning while swimming in the river as a child. He also
reminisced of his childhood pony and surviving being run
over by a tractor.
John married Luella Hoffman and to this union six children
were born. John and Luella later divorced. Johnnie started
his career as a truck driver for Omaha Cold Storage in
Carroll and he continued in the trucking field his entire
career. John’s life was devoted to his family and trucking
and he retired in 1989. After retirement he lived in Newton.
He moved to Eldora in 1997 to be closer to his son, Wayne
and family. John became a resident of the Eldora Nursing and
Rehab Center in 2005.
He is survived by his sons, LeRoy (Chris) Meister of Tempe,
Arizona, Russell (Jean) Meister of Hubbard, John (Lori
Rinehart) Meister of Des Moines and Wayne (Karen) Meister of
Eldora; daughters, Janice (Bob) Porter of Columbia, Missouri
and Shirley (Curt) Bunte of Hubbard; 14 grandchildren; and
11 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother,
Everett; and sisters, Annie Nelson and Madge Pluckham.

away on Thursday, December 14, 2006, at the Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.
A time of visitation will be held from 4-6:00 p.m., on
Sunday, December 17, at the Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls
Chapel. Memorial services will be held at 5:00 p.m., on
Monday, December 18, at the Immanuel Memorial United Church
of Christ, Alden.
Sandra Ann Smuck, was born on September 3, 1954, to Herbert
and Katherine Bennett Smuck. She attended the Alden
Community School, graduating in 1972. She attended
the Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota,
graduating with an A.A.S. degree.
On October 12, 1979, she was united in marriage to Stephen
Turner. To this union three children were born, one son, Sam
and twin daughters, Stephanie and Shanna. Her second
marriage was to Mark Trangsrud on February 14, 1995 in
Burnsville, Minnesota.
Sandra is survived by her children, Sam Turner of
Minneapolis, Minnesota, Stephanie Rapp and Shanna Turner of
Iowa Falls; step-sons, Jayson and Brandon Trangsrud of
Waukpala, South Dakota and Joseph Trangsrud of Spring Lake
Park, Minnesota; brothers, Steve Smuck and wife, Randi of
Alden and Stacy Smuck and wife, Becky of Rigby, Idaho;
sisters, Susan Smuck and friend, Rick Hoversten of Alden,
Sally Waldroupe and husband, Dale of Iowa Falls and Sheryl
Goodknight and husband, Terry of Iowa Falls; two grandsons,
Tate and Isaiah; and two step-grandchildren.
Sandra was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal
grandparents; her parents; and her husband, Mark Trangsrud.

Arizona—William J. “Bill” Riley of Scottsdale, Arizona and
Clear Lake, died on Friday, December 15, 2006 at his home,
after a battle with cancer.
Riley grew up in Iowa Falls and had a successful
broadcasting career at KRNT radio and television in Des
Moines.
Memorial services for Bill Riley have been postponed, due to
the health of Anne Riley, who is currently hospitalized in
Scottsdale, Arizona. Memorials in Bill Riley’s behalf may be
made to the Des Moines Zoo and the Cancer Society of Iowa.

Dr. Archibald Lobb Jr.

MIAMISBURG, Ohio—Dr. Archibald Lobb Jr., 88, of Miamisburg,
Ohio and formerly of Iowa Falls, died on Saturday, December
16, 2006, after admission to the Hospice of Dayton, Ohio,
following a short illness.
He was born on October 29, 1918 in Memphis, Tennessee. As a
young man he attended the Pentecost-Garrison School,
Memphis and the Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee.
After serving in the Army in the European theater during
World War II, Archie attained his degree in Podiatric
Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. While there he met his wife,
Jacquelyn Florence Christianson. Before returning to Memphis
they were married in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Lobb practiced
podiatric medicine until his retirement.
After retirement, Archie and Jacquelyn “Jackie” continued to
live in Memphis for almost 15 years (except for a year in
Hardy, Arkansas) until moving to Iowa Falls. After Jackie’s
death in 1999, Archie moved to Miamisburg to share the home
of his only child, Arthur Christian Lobb. Archie enjoyed
fencing, sailing and amateur radio. He especially enjoyed
volunteering for church functions and Meals-On-Wheels. He
was a member of the Grace St. Luke’s Episcopal Church,
Memphis and St. Matthew’s by the Bridge in Iowa Falls.
In lieu of flowers, please send any memorials to St.
Matthew’s by the Bridge, Iowa Falls. A memorial service is
being planned at the Grace St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, with
burial in Alden next to his wife.
Archie (nicknamed “Pops” by many who knew him in Ohio) made
brighter all of the lives he touched. He was kind, loving,
vivacious and a true gentleman.

IOWA FALLS—Maurice J. Belken, 89, of Iowa Falls, died on
Sunday, December 17, 2006, at the Ellsworth Municipal
Hospital.

Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is in charge of the
arrangements.
Maurice John Belken, was born on August 24, 1917 at Iowa
Falls, the son of Frank and Susan (Stonebreaker) Belken. He
received his education in the local schools.
Maurice was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Fistler on
November 11, 1939 at Hampton. Maurice served his country in
World War II with the U.S. Navy. He was an iron worker with
Iron Workers Local 67, Des Moines, until his retirement in
1980.
He was a member of the St. Mark Church and American
Legion Hyman-Peavey Post No. 188.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dorothy of Iowa
Falls; two sons, Jerry Belken and wife, Margaret of
Charlotte, North Carolina and Jim Belken and wife, Linda of
Alden; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and
one brother.

Michael Dean Azeltine

NEWTON—Michael Dean Azeltine, died on Sunday, December 17, 2006, at
his home with his parents at his side.
Memorial services
will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 30, at the First
United Methodist Church of Iowa Falls. Lunch will be served
following the services. Memorials may be sent to the First
United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
Michael was born in Iowa Falls on March 13, 1951. He
attended schools in Iowa Falls, St. Louis and Upper St.
Clair, Pennsylvania. He was awarded a scholarship by the Pittsburgh
Post Gazette and graduated from the DeVeaux Prep School in
Niagara Falls, New York. He then attended the University of Iowa.
Michael was active in Boy Scouts, achieving the highest
honor of Eagle Scout.
He worked in construction in Iowa and
Colorado. In his later years, he developed an avid interest
in the restoration of pottery. His clients were from all
areas of the United States.
He was proceeded in death by a brother, Anthony; and his
maternal and paternal grandparents.
He is survived by his
parents, Dean and Mary Azeltine; and brothers, Jeffrey,
Gregory and Bradley and their families.

ROLFE—Arnold W. “Bud” Hansen, 85, of Rolfe, passed away on
Sunday, December 17, 2006, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 20, at the
Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Brian
King officiating. Burial was in the Clinton Garfield
Cemetery, Rolfe. The Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Arnold Watson Hansen, was born on February 26, 1921 at Rolfe, the
son of Lawrence Anthony and Hylah Lavina (Hayward) Hansen.
He attended the Rolfe Elementary School and graduated from
the Rolfe High School with the class of 1939.
On December 8,
1943, he was united in marriage to Evelyn May Strait at the
Presbyterian Church, Rolfe. To this union three children
were born, Larry A., Darla M. and Marcia K. They were
lifelong residence of Rolfe. “Bud” (as he was known) worked
for L.A. Hansen and Son Road Construction with his father
and then became owner/operator of Hansen Dozer and Dirt
Work, retiring in 1979. He also did mechanical repair, was
an inventor of gadgets and a machinist engineer.
He loved
sports and was a member of the Rolfe basketball teams who
won Iowa State Championships in 1934-35, 1936-37 and
1938-39. He loved to play pool, cards and had hobbies with
model airplanes, go-carts and stock cars. He was a member of
the Rolfe Presbyterian Church.
Bud Hansen is survived by his children, Larry Hansen of
Waverly, Darla Hansen and husband, Randy of Iowa Falls and
Marcia Marchant and husband, Roger of Iowa Falls; four
grandchildren, Andrew Watson Hansen, Michael Paul Hansen,
Roger Dean Marchant and Robin Kay (Marchant) Wagner; and
four great-grandchildren, Madison Janea Hansen, Alivia Mae
Hansen, Rayne NaKayla Wagner and Reeve Hezekiah Wagner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, L. A. and Hylah
Hansen; his wife, Evelyn Hansen; a great-grandson, Reed John
Wagner; and two sisters, Marjorie Strait and Cleo Perrin.

IOWA FALLS—Richard H. “Dick” Fredericks, 86, of Iowa Falls,
passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2006, at his home.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, December 22, at the First Baptist
Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Dave Schwechel
officiating. Burial was in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was entrusted
with the arrangements.
Richard Henry Fredericks, was born on January 22, 1920, the son of
Gustav Henry and Della (Shafer) Fredericks. He attended Iowa
Falls Grade Schools and Elgin, Illinois, High School, graduating
with the class of 1938. He started making tools at the age
of 15. He farmed in Kansas from 1938 to 1942 and also owned
and operated the R. H. Fredericks Company. In 1942, he moved
to Franklin County, Iowa and while farming was his major
occupation, he owned and operated the Falls Tools Co., Inc.
He served with the U.S. Army from August 26, 1944 to August 30,
1946, serving in the Asiatic, Pacific and Philippine
Campaigns. He also served with the Army of Occupation after
the defeat of Japan.
Richard was united in marriage to
Virginia Lee Tvedt on December 24, 1948 at Montour. To this
union three children were born, Jeannette, Paul and Eric.
Dick attended the First Baptist Church, Iowa Falls, was a
member of the original Iowa Falls Boat Club, the Off the
Record Club and the Sky Rangers in the 1940s and 1950s.
Dick Fredericks is survived by his wife, Virginia Fredericks
of Iowa Falls; one daughter, Jeannette Fredericks-Weber and
husband, John of Early; two sons, Paul Fredericks and wife,
Barbara of Alden and Eric Fredericks and wife, Debra of Iowa
Falls; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Della
Fredericks.

ACKLEY—Merlin Bangasser, 84, of Ackley, died on Tuesday, December
19, 2006, at his home.
Funeral services were held on Friday,
December 22, at the Faith Presbyterian Church in rural Ackley, with
burial in the Faith Presbyterian Cemetery. The Sietsema Funeral
Home in Ackley was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert L. Poland

KEWANEE, Illinois—Robert L. Poland, 84, of Kewanee, Illinois, passed
away on Saturday, December 23, 2006, at the Kewanee General
Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, December
28, at the First Church of God, Iowa Falls, with the Rev.
Stephen Acheson officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m.,
on
Wednesday, at the Linn’s Funeral Home, Iowa Falls. Burial
will be in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes
Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Robert Leonard Poland, was born on December 27, 1921 in Royal Oak,
Michigan, the son of Clarence Franklin and Ada Mae (Keller)
Poland. He graduated from the Buckeye, Iowa Community
Schools as valedictorian of the class of 1939. He graduated
from Ellsworth College in 1941.
On December 15, 1941, Robert was
united in marriage to Mildred Kathryn Meyer at the Moody
Bible Church, by the Rev. Harold Ironside. To this union four
children were born, Robert, Beth, Karen and Linda.
During his lifetime, he had many careers, farmer in Buckeye,
machinist in Dows, engineer for John Deere in Waterloo,
owner of Poland Manufacturing in Iowa Falls, design engineer
for Kewanee Machinery and Conveyer, owner of Poland
engineering, Kewanee, engineer for International Harvester,
Hinsdale, Illinois and then retried due to illness from the
Rock Island Arsenal at the age of 72. He missed work and
wished to go back during his remaining years. He was a man
of great integrity, a great sense of humor and quick wit
and was admired by many and loved beyond measure by his
family.
Robert L. Poland is survived by his wife of 65 years,
Mildred K. Poland of Kewanee; his son, Robert Frederick
Poland and wife, Carolyn of University Place, Washington; his
daughters, Beth Levaun Penn and husband, Don of Normal, Illinois,
Karen Ann DeConinck and husband, Albert of Kewanee and Linda
Kay Buck and husband, Tim of Dunlap, Illinois; 18 grandchildren;
and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Ada
Poland; an infant daughter, Kathy Poland; and two
grandchildren, Marybeth Kathryn Poland and Ryon Ashley
Poland.

Arnold "Arnie" Sielaff

IOWA FALLS—Arnold “Arnie” Sielaff, 92, of Iowa Falls, passed
away on Tuesday, December 26, 2006, at the Scenic Manor,
Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 30, at the
Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls. Burial was in the
Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, with full military honors
provided by the U.S. Army. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Iowa
Falls Chapel was entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
Arnold Paul Sielaff, was born on October 18, 1914, at his
parents home southeast of Buckeye, the son of Fred W. and
Minnie B. (Fuhrman) Sielaff. He attended country school and
graduated from the Buckeye High School with the class of
1931.
On November 19, 1939, he was united in marriage to Doris A.
Spoor at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls. To this
union two children were born, Helen and William. He served
with the U.S. Navy during World War II and then with the
U.S. Army, retiring as a captain in 1974. He farmed and was
also a pilot, enjoying both.
Arnie Sielaff is survived by his wife, Doris Sielaff of Iowa
Falls; daughter, Helen Hartman of Iowa Falls; son, William
Sielaff and wife, Lin of Grayson, Kentucky; two
grandchildren, Steven Brauer of Iowa Falls and Laura Johnson
and husband, Stephen of Lawrence, Kansas; two
great-grandchildren, Blake and Abby; and two sisters, Rosina
Sielaff of Iowa Falls and Freda Oakland of Eldora.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Minnie
Sielaff; five sisters; and two brothers.

Gunner Dean Brannick

IOWA CITY—Gunner Dean Brannick, 3-month-old son of Amber D.
Brannick, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2006, at the
University Hospitals, Iowa City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 2, at the
Linn’s Funeral Home Chapel, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Brian
King officiating. Burial was in the Hazel Green Cemetery,
rural Ackley.
Gunner was born at 5:15 p.m., on September 17, 2006, at the
University Hospital, Iowa City, son of Amber D. Brannick. He
weighed 13 ounces and was 9 inches long. He was blessed on
September 24, 2006, by the Rev. Randy J. Langner at the
University Hospitals. He was baptized on December 28, 2006,
by Chaplain Harold Scheers at the University Hospitals.
Gunner is survived by his mother, Amber Brannick of Iowa
Falls; maternal grandparents, Deborah DeVries-Brannick of
Iowa Falls, Christopher Paul Cory of Eldora and William
(Tracy) Brannick Jr. of Iowa Falls; maternal
great-grandparents, Donna DeVries and Evelyn Brannick, both
of Iowa Falls and Mickey Rolph of Eldora;
great-great-grandmother, Arlene Knott of Iowa Falls; an
uncle, Dustin Brannick of Iowa Falls; two step-aunts, Leslie
Ann Cory of Marshalltown and Cassie Brannick of Iowa Falls;
and three step-uncles, Cole Brannick, Seth Branncik and
Slayton Brannick, all of Iowa Falls.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandfathers, Rocky
DeVries and William Brannick Sr.

Nursing Facility in Mason City.

IOWA FALLS—Connie Smith Wood, 41, of Iowa Falls, died on
Friday, December 29, 2006, at her home.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at
the Evangelical Free Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in
the Hazel Green Cemetery, rural Ackley. The Surls Funeral
Home in Iowa Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Connie Smith Wood, was born on August 8, 1965 at Iowa Falls,
the daughter of Clarence and Luella (Fischer) Smith. She
received her early education at the Ackley-Geneva School and
graduated with the class of 1983. Connie received her
associate’s degree in swine management from Ellsworth
College, her bachelor’s degree in human services from Buena
Vista University and her master’s degree in social work from
the University of Northern Iowa.
Connie was a social worker for the University of Northern
Iowa and the Iowa Coalition For Domestic Violence Against
Women. She was a member of NOCC of Iowa and National Student
Association. Connie enjoyed working with children and was
thankful for the people she met and learned from and their
lives they shared with her. Connie was especially proud of
her children and the young adults they have become.
Survivors include her sons, Nathan See of Ankeny, Nicholis
See of Iowa Falls and foster son, Troy Martin of Webster
City; mother, Luella Smith and her special friend, Lloyd Maifield of Iowa Falls; brothers, Ken Smith and his wife,
Mary of Ackley, Ron Smith and his wife, Sara of Ackley and
Jim Smith and his wife, Karyl of Waverly; a sister, Pat
Smith of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; grandparents, Roy
and Hazel Fischer and Hershel and Dorothy Smith; an uncle,
Frank Smith; and a cousin, Daryl Mennen.

Ilene Minnie Hill

IOWA FALLS—Ilene Minnie Hill, 87, of Iowa Falls, died on
Saturday, December 30, 2006, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 2, at the
Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union
Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Ilene Minnie Hill, was born on April 21, 1919 at Corning,
the daughter of Ira and Ethel (Garner) Martin. Her family
moved to a farm near Rowan. Ilene attended and graduated
from the Clarion High School with the class of 1937. Ilene
taught country school for two years. She married Arthur
Truman Hill on May 21, 1939, at Rowan. Ilene was a homemaker
in addition to helping out on the farm.
Survivors include three daughters, Janice Gregory and
husband, Dr. Richard of Vermillion, South Dakota, Judy
Duckett and husband, Ronald of Randalia and Janet Kaufman
and husband, Larry of Ankeny; two sons, Steven Hill and
wife, Sandy of Geneva and Stan Hill of Cedar Rapids; 11
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters,
Esther Gardalen of Clear Lake and Evelyn Vulgamott of Ames.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two
sisters, Ella Askelsen and Iris Johnson.
