IOWA FALLS—Norma Nehring, 88, of Iowa Falls, died on
Wednesday, November 1, 2006, at the Scenic Manor Nursing
Home in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held at 11:00
a.m., on Saturday, November 4, at the Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Iowa Falls, with visitation one hour prior to the
services. Burial will be in the Keystone Cemetery in
Keystone.
Norma Amanda Brauer Nehring, was born on January 22, 1918 in
Guttenburg, the daughter of Albert H. and Anna (Ortman)
Werner. Norma grew up in Allison and received her early
education there, graduating from the Allison High School in
1935. Following her graduation she attended the Iowa Normal
School in Cedar Falls to receive her teaching certificate.
Norma taught country school until her marriage to Albert H.
Brauer on June 2, 1940, at the St. John Lutheran Church in
Keystone, by the Rev. Albert W. Brauer.
Residing in various communities, Norma and Al raised three
children while he pursued his career in school
administration. In 1954, while in Hubbard, her husband,
Superintendent A.H. Brauer passed away. Norma returned to
teaching, and at the same time attended summer school and
evening classes at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar
Falls, to complete a B.A. Degree in Education. Norma and her
children moved to Iowa Falls in 1958, where she taught fifth
grade and remedial reading until her retirement in 1983.
On July 13, 1968, Norma was married to Arthur C. Nehring at
the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls and lived in Iowa
Falls until Arthur’s death on August 5, 1995. Norma remained
involved with church, community and professional activities
until health issues required her to move to the Scenic Manor
in 2000.
Norma was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where
she served on several committees, Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired
Teachers Association, Bridge Club and BPW.
Those thankful for having shared her life include two sons,
Ronald A. Brauer and wife, Susan of Crete, Illinois and
Dennis L. Brauer and wife, Martha of Hayward, Wisconsin; a
daughter, Carol J. Deal of Batavia, Illinois; six
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both spouses; and
three brothers.

Rosalie Mikkelsen

WATERLOO—Rosalie Mikkelsen died on Thursday, November 2,
2006, at the Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 7, at the Richardson
Funeral Home, Cedar Falls. Interment was in the Cedar Valley
Memorial Gardens.
Rosalie was born on March 15, 1939 in
Iowa Falls, the daughter of Guy and Ruby (Cessford) Kay. She
graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1957. She
married John Green in 1959, he died in December 1960. She
then married John Birkett, they later divorced. On December
30, 1988, she was united in marriage to Larry Mikkelsen in
Waterloo.
Rosalie worked for the Heilig-Meyers Furniture Co. in
Waterloo and was later employed by Sears in the Crossroads
Shopping Center, also in Waterloo.
Rosalie is survived by her husband, Larry of Waterloo; three
daughters, Pamela (Kevin) Tschantre of Snohomish,
Washington, Barbara (fiancée, Jason Vaughn) Wood of Columbia,
Missouri and Janet (Jeffrey) Kurth of Ackley; son, John
(Mindy) Birkett of Lodi, California; two step-sons, Steve (Tindi
Cady) Mikkelsen of Cedar Rapids and Brad (Rachael) Mikkelsen
of Savage, Minnesota, currently serving in Iraq; sister,
Darlene Borzon of Cleveland, Ohio; and 16 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald
Kay; and daughter, Mary Ann Birkett.

Doris Jean Neely

BROOKSVILLE, Florida—Doris
Jean Neely passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2006, at her
home of natural causes.
She was born on January 9, 1934, to John Goodman and Evelyn
(Amya) Goodman, at Knoxville, Tennessee. Jean graduated from
the Knoxville Central High School in 1952. She then moved to
Green Bay, Wisconsin, to be with her sister, Kay and her
husband, Jim Percy, working with a medical supply company
there.
On May 9, 1954, Jean was
united in marriage with Clarence Lynn Neely in Streater,
Illinois. Lynn was playing electric steel guitar with the
Dave Dudley Country Band at the time. They entertained for
many years, touring through the northern states and the
Midwest. Jean joined the “Lynn
Neely Country Swingster Band.” She learned to play the
electric bass. Jean loved to play the bass and sing
alongside her husband, Lynn.
In later years, they
retired in southern Florida, first living in their home in
Hudson, Florida in 1981, then in later years moving to their
home in Brooksville. They were also formally self-employed
module home park owners in Charles City and Bowling Green,
Kentucky. Jean and Lynn were members of the First Baptist
Church, Hudson.
Lynn passed away suddenly
on January 21, 1993. Jean continued to live in their home in
Brooksville until her death.
Jean is survived by her
two sisters, Ann Lynn (Goodman) Pack and husband, David of
Knoxville and Marian (Goodman) Stallings of Chicago,
Illinois; one brother, Sherman Goodman of California;
brother-in-law, Larry Neely and wife, Lois of Iowa Falls;
sister-in-law, Sheryl (Neely) Orr and husband, Richard of
Warrensburg, Missouri; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Neely)
Prescott and husband, Alfred of Ackley; and many nephews and
nieces.
Jean was preceded in death
by her parents, John and Evelyn Goodman; a sister, Kay
Goodman Percy and husband, Bill Percy; brother, Bill
Goodman; and brother-in-law, James Stallings.
A memorial service and
internment were held on Monday, November 6, at the Florida
National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida, with the Rev. Roy
Roush officiating. Jean was laid to rest beside her husband,
Lynn. An inscription there says it all, “Together Again
Forever.”

HUBBARD—Martin F. Kielsmeier, 89, of Hubbard, died on
Friday, November 3, 2006, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 6, at the
Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, with the Rev. John Attaway officiating. Burial will be in the Hubbard Cemetery.
The Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard was in charge of the
arrangements.
Martin Fredrick Kielsmeier, was born on March 21, 1917, to
Fred and Lena (Kulow) Kielsmeier on the Kielsmeier farm
northwest of Hubbard. He received his education at the
Dancer Rural School in Tipton Township. He was baptized and
confirmed in the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hubbard.
On October 12, 1940, he was united in marriage to Garnet
Bahr of Eldora at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hubbard.
One daughter Janet was born to this union. The couple farmed
in the Hubbard area until their retirement into Hubbard in
1984.
In 1957, he became a member of the Zion United Church
of Christ in Hubbard. He served on the church council for
three years, plus many, many hours of volunteer work in the
church.
He is survived by his wife, Garnet of Iowa Falls; three
grandchildren, Joel Christianson and wife, Jill of Ankeny,
Jane Dodson and husband, John of DeSota, and Jill
Christianson of Des Moines; eight great-grandchildren; plus
many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Janet and
son-in-law, James Christianson; and his brother, Louis
Kielsmeier and sister-in-law, Gladys Kielsmeier.

ZEARING—Ramon “Kent” Miller, 81, of Zearing and formerly of
Iowa Falls, died on Sunday, November 5, 2006, at the
Colonial Manor in Zearing.
Private graveside funeral
services will be held at the Alden Cemetery. The Surls
Funeral Home of Alden is in charge of the arrangements.
Ramon was born on February 21, 1925 in Iowa Falls, the son
of Clifford and Blanche (Wood) Miller. He graduated from
Grinnell College in 1954 and had served in the U.S. Navy.
Ramon was united in marriage to Janet Knierim in Grinnell
and later divorced. He co-owned and operated the Miller
Lumberyard Business in Alden, Iowa Falls and Owasa, later
going to work for the Eldora Training School as director of
counselors. He had been a member of the Rotary club.
Ramon is survived by his daughter, Susan Polzin and husband,
Rich of Alden; a son, Gary Miller of Oregon; and one
granddaughter, Tara Polzin of Alden.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother,
Barton Miller.

RADCLIFFE—Thelbert “Ted” Skeie, 82, of Radcliffe, died on
Wednesday, November 8, 2006, at the Hubbard Care Center Inc.
in Hubbard.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 10, at Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, with the Rev. Daniel
Hart officiating. Ted Skeie was buried in the Radcliffe
Cemetery in Radcliffe. The Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe
was in charge of the arrangements.
Thelbert was born on September 24, 1924, at home on a farm
north of Garden City, to Theodore and Raynellie (Maley)
Skeie. Ted attended grade school in Garden City. He
graduated from the Radcliffe High School in 1942.
On June 11, 1946, he married Doris Lorraine Skogerboe. They
first lived on a farm near Garden City. In December of 1947,
they moved to a farm north of Radcliffe, and it continues to
be home. Last spring they celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary.
Ted has been a farmer and carpenter all of his life. After
retirement, he continued to help with harvest as long as he
could. Ted and Doris also operated a furniture refinishing
shop on their farm for 20 years. Their enjoyment of
refinishing antiques and hunting for treasures at flea
markets led to an antique business in Iowa Falls, until
December 2003.
Besides being active in the church and the CEF (Child
Evangelism Fellowship), Ted and Doris enjoyed being members
of the Sons of Norway since 1982. Many of those years they
served as officers. In 1995 and in 1985, they were king and
queen. They were Grand Marshals in the 2004 Radcliffe Days
Parade.
Because of declining health, Ted moved to the Hubbard Care
Center in June of 2005. He enjoyed the company of his
friends and the staff. He died there on Wednesday morning,
November 8, 2006, surrounded by family. His children and
grandchildren were the center of his life and attentions. He
often said, “My children are my investments and my
grandchildren are my dividends."
He is survived by his wife, Doris; children, Diana (Rick)
Erickson, Rita (Al) Dirkx, Wanita Kueter, Randy (Crystal)
Skeie and Tammy (Dan) Kumrow; grandchildren, Eric Erickson,
Chad (Denise) Dirkx, Lisa (Andy) Jordan, Kelli (Curt)
Binder, Rachel Escalona, Tami (Sean) Beachem, Jamie
(Kimberly) Skeie, Sara (Tim) Velander, Michelle Kumrow, Jill
Kumrow and Tiffany (Eric) Mueller; brother-in-law, Ron
Skogerboe; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruby
Lee and Laureen Keoppel; one brother, Clifford Skeie; one
son, Ricky Skeie; and a great-granddaughter, Savanna Jordan.

ACKLEY-Henry VanTiger, 92, of Ackley, died on Thursday,
November 9, 2006, at his home.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 14, at the
Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Ackley, with burial in the
Oakwood Cemetery, Ackley. The Sietsema Funeral Home in
Ackley was in charge of the arrangements.
Henry was born on October 8, 1914, at Holland, the son of
Charles and Sarah (Lustfeus) VanTiger. He received his
education in the Holland area schools and served his country
during World War II with the U.S. Air Force.
He married Alice Rieken on December 6, 1949, at the Little
Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua and later married Marion
F. Johnson in May of 1988.
Henry was a self-employed mechanic and had also farmed and
worked in the family-owned gravel pits, Rieken’s Quarry.
Henry was a member of the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and the
American Legion in Ackley.
Survivors include two nephews, Irvin Knott and Rory Knott,
both of Texas; 13 loving grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren; four step-daughters, Shari Spires and
husband, Walter of Black Mt., North Carolina, Deb Herman and
husband, Tom of Kansas City, Missouri, Sandra Erickson and
husband, Tom of Williamsburg and Kimery Zoellick of Ackley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; a
number of brothers and sisters; and one nephew, Terry.

IOWA FALLS-Deloris Elaine Meyer, 68, of Iowa Falls, died on
Friday, November 10, 2006, from injuries sustained in an
automobile accident.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 14, at the
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the
Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa
Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Deloris Elaine Meyer, was born on March 13, 1938 in Hampton,
the daughter of Ike and Dagmar (Kibsgaard) Olk. She attended
country school in Hansel and completed her education at the
Sheffield Community Schools. After graduation she enrolled
at Hamilton Business College in Mason City.
Deloris was united in marriage to Kenneth (Bill) Nicholson
in October 1957. To this union, three children were born,
Kim, Mark and Connie. In May 1972, Deloris married Harold L.
Meyer at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, church
organist, pianist for the church choir, Hymn Sing leader,
and President of Ladies Aid. She was President of Rebekah
Circle, Eat-Out-Monthly Group, Etude Club and “Body and
Soul” exercise group. She participated in Bible studies,
helped prepare meals for seniors and for funerals at her
church. She delivered Meals on Wheels, worked at the CWU
Thrift Shop and played for many weddings and funerals
throughout the area.
Deloris was a warm, loving wife, mother and sister who gave
of herself in every way. She will be sorely missed by her
family and friends and throughout the community.
Deloris is survived by her daughters, Kim Whitmore of Iowa
Falls and Connie Moehlman and husband, Mike of Iowa Falls;
son, Mark Nicholson of Hampton; step-daughter, Janet
Weibrecht of West Des Moines; step-sons, Lee Meyer and wife,
Debbie of Fairfax and Doug Meyer of Denver, Colorado; 15
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Norman Olk
and wife, Eleanor of Sheffield; sister, Donna Joens and
husband, David of Waterloo; brother, Larry Olk and wife,
Emma of Sheffield; sister, Iva Griep and husband, Stanley of
Ackley; and sister, Barbara Long and husband, Jim of Des
Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and
two step-daughters, Jane Elkin and Clarine Rater.

Iowa Falls Woman Killed In
Friday Crash

FRANKLIN COUNTY-Law enforcement officials have released the
identity of a woman killed Friday in a two-vehicle accident
on Highway 65 in Franklin County.
Deloris Elaine Meyer, 68, of Iowa Falls, died when her van
was struck by a Christensen Farms Midwest semi at about 1:15
p.m. Friday. According to an accident report released by the
Iowa State Patrol, Meyer was traveling south on Highway 65,
about three miles north of Highway 57, when she lost control
of her 2001 Honda Odyssey and crossed the center line of the
two-lane road.
Meyer’s van was struck by a 2001 Mack truck being driven by
Michael Duane Thompson, 41, of Ackley. After the collision,
both vehicles slid into the east ditch, where Thompson’s
truck pinned Meyer’s van against a utility pole.
Meyer was pronounced dead at the scene. Thompson was
transported to Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls by
AMR Ambulance. Information about his condition was not
available.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
At the time of the accident, the roads in Franklin and
Hardin counties were slick from falling snow.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by AMR
Ambulance, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin
General Ambulance, the Bradford Fire Department and the
Hardin County E-Squad.
The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State
Patrol.

Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Ruth’s body was donated
to the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, November 20, at
11:00 a.m., at the St. John’s United Methodist Church in
Radcliffe. The family will receive friends at the Boeke
Funeral Home in Radcliffe, on Sunday, November 19, from
2-4:00 p.m.

Steven P. Sayer

NEW PROVIDENCE-Steven P. Sayer, 39, of New Providence, died
in Eldora on Sunday, November 12, 2006.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 16, at the
Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church in New Providence,
with the Rev. Arlen Daleske officiating. Burial followed in
the Pleasant Chapel Cemetery near New Providence. The
Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora was in charge of the
arrangements.
Steven was born on April 9, 1967 in Iowa Falls, son of
Philip A. Sayer and Cindi L. Brown Sayer McCabe. He
graduated from the New Providence High School in 1985 and
worked as a mechanic for several area shops before going to
work for United Suppliers. He has been employed with United
Suppliers for 14 years, most recently in the Chemical
Terminal Division.
On October 26, 1996, he was united in marriage to Nancy
Shore and they made their home in New Providence.
Steve
enjoyed tinkering in his shop on cars and motorcycles and
was also a train collector.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Nicholas Sayer of
Eldora; step-children, Emely Shore of New Providence and
Loyde Allen of Iowa Falls; father and step-mother, Philip
and Jan Sayer of Nevada; mother and step-father, Cindi and
Dennis McCabe of Roland; step-mother, Jerri Newman of Iowa
Falls; sister, Angela Sayer (Wes Moler) of Zearing;
half-brothers, Shawn McCabe (Maria) of Jacksonville, North
Carolina and Michael McCabe (Rachelle) of Hubbard; paternal
grandparents, Dale and Marjorie Schwarck of Iowa Falls;
step-granddaughter, Raya Allen; three nephews, Jacob, Garret
and Blake; two nieces, Caitlin and Zoe; and numerous aunts,
uncles and cousins.
Steve was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather,
Wendell Sayer; and maternal grandparents, Arel and Katherine
Brown.

Betty Abbas, was born on November 23, 1925, to Omer and
Borghild (Kmudslien) Amundson in Webster City. She married
Russell Abbas, deceased, and had one son, Tim Abbas of Iowa
Falls.
Betty was a foster mother for many years for handicapped
children. She also ran a day care for many children in and
around the Iowa Falls area. After her retirement she became
an in-home caregiver for the elderly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers,
Jimmy, Claude, JR and Don Amundson; and two sisters, Barb
Ites and Ruth Reed.

RADCLIFFE-Wayne Rierson, 89, a former long time Radcliffe
resident, died on Monday, November 13, 2006, at the Scenic
Manor in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 18, at the
St. John’s United Methodist Church in Radcliffe, with the
Rev. Marion Sindt officiating. Burial was in the Radcliffe
Cemetery. American Legion Post No. 317 of Radcliffe
performed the flag folding and presentation. The Boeke
Funeral Home in Radcliffe was in charge of the arrangements.
Wayne was born on March 2, 1917, on the family farm north of
Radcliffe, to Clarence and Ethel (Pearson) Rierson. He
attended school in Radcliffe, where he spent most of his
adult life.
On December 23, 1940, he was united in marriage to Crystal
Carr at Radcliffe. Wayne entered the Army in 1942 serving as
a medic. When he returned home from the service he lived and
farmed many years in Buckeye Township. Wayne raised Aberdeen
Angus cattle, helped his father establish the American Cream
Association and served as one of the original directors.
He also served on the Hardin County Fair Board, was a past
member and officer of Kiwanis, a 50-plus-year member of the
American Legion Post in Radcliffe and a life long member of
the St. John’s United Methodist Church, serving on its board
of trustees.
In 1982, Wayne retired from the farm and he and Crystal
moved into a home in Radcliffe where they lived for 20
years. Since 2001, they have made their home with their
daughter, Barbara Miller and husband, John in Iowa Falls.
Wayne has been a resident of Scenic Manor since March of
2006.
He is survived by his wife, Crystal; a daughter, Barbara
Miller and husband, John of Iowa Falls; granddaughter,
Victoria Blume and husband, Matthew of Kansas City,
Missouri; step-granddaughter, Cheryl Clifton and husband,
Philip of Pocatello, Idaho; step-great-grandson, Philip
Clifton; sisters-in-law, Reva Granner of Hubbard and Zoe
Rierson of Radcliffe; nephews, Clair Rierson and Roger
Granner; and nieces, Linda Ward and Rita Neville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale
Rierson; sister, Ruth King; infant brothers, Clair and
Ronald; sister-in-law, Viola Carr; and brothers-in-law,
Glenn Carr and Stanley Granner.

RADCLIFFE-Franklin Ostrem, 86, of Radcliffe, died on
Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at his home.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 17, at Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, with burial in the
Radcliffe Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe was
in charge of the arrangements.
Franklin Kenneth Ostrem, was born on July 26, 1920 at rural
Radcliffe, the fourth child of Swen Martin and Rose Jane
(Larson) Ostrem. He was baptized as an infant at the
Stavanger Lutheran Church, Garden City and affirmed his
baptism through confirmation at the Our Savior’s Lutheran
Church, Radcliffe. He graduated from the Radcliffe High
School in 1938 and immediately entered his life time
vocation of farming.
On November 26, 1943, Franklin was united in marriage to
Hazel M. Anderson. They lived north of Radcliffe for 23
years and then moved to a farm south of Radcliffe where they
lived for another 10 years. In 1977, they moved to their
home in Radcliffe, when their son, Richard entered the
farming operation with Ostrem Farms, Inc. Franklin loved the
land, was a good farmer, and could spot a cocklebur or
buttonweed at 40 rods. He stayed active in farming until two
years before his death.
Franklin served his community as a member of the Radcliffe
City Council, the Hardin County Extension Council, the
Farmers’ Co-op Elevator Board as Secretary, the
Hubbard-Radcliffe Area Foundation Board, the Radcliffe
Kiwanis Club and by being a 4-H Leader. He was a member of
the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and served as an usher, trustee
and deacon. He enjoyed bowling, golf, visiting with friends,
and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his three sons and their wives, Gary and
Renee Ostrem of Waterloo, Richard and Nancy Ostrem of
Radcliffe and Paul and Carol Ostrem of Muscatine; nine
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother,
Arnold Ostrem of Radcliffe; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2003;
three brothers, John, Robert and Virgil Ostrem; and one
sister, Lenore Tweet.

ST. CHARLES,
Missouri—Hazel Marie Thorson, 91, of St. Charles, Missouri,
passed away on Friday, November 17, 2006, at the Parkside
Meadows Retirement Center in St. Charles after being
hospitalized for four weeks.
Mrs. Thorson was a homemaker and lived in the Williams
community for 45 years before moving to St. Charles in 2001.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, November 25, at the
United Methodist Church of the Shepherd, St. Charles.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at the United
Methodist Church in Williams. The Neptune Society of St.
Louis, Missouri, was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Thorson was a member for 50 years of the United
Methodist Church in Williams. She was Church Treasurer for
17 years and a member and officer of United Methodist Women.
She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was
an active 4-H member and received the Story County 4-H
Citizenship Award. As an adult, Mrs. Thorson was a 4-H
Leader for the Williams Hustling Homemakers for 20 years and
received the Hamilton County 4-H Alumni Award. She was a
long time member and officer of the Federated Women’s Club
in Williams.
Mrs. Thorson was preceded in death by her husband, Melburne
“Mel” Peter Thorson; her parents, Arthur and Daisy Couser;
three sisters, Lola Davis, Alice Stevens and Ilo Cozzens;
and two brothers, Luther Couser and Chet Couser.
Mrs. Thorson is survived by one daughter, Lois and husband,
Russell Lawson of St. Charles, Missouri; and one son, Delmar
and wife, Virginia Thorson of Merced, California; three
granddaughters, Cindy “Cid” and husband, Rob Chase, Kathleen
Thorson of Burbank, California and Lesli and husband, Brian
Behn of Merced, California; two grandsons, Mark and wife,
Pam Lawson of Chesterfield, Missouri and Eric and wife,
Christy Thorson of Sacramento, California; two
great-granddaughters, Kirsten Lawson and Aiyana Chase; one
grandson, Zachary Lawson; and one sister, Evelyn and
husband, Charles Davis of Clemons.

SIOUX CENTER-Henry Brower, 93, of Sioux Center, formerly of
Hampton, died on Saturday, November 18, 2006, at the Royale
Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 22, at the
Covenant Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with the
Rev. Herm Van Niejenhuis officiating. Interment was in the
Grant Center Township Cemetery of rural Iowa Fall. The
Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center was in charge of the
arrangements. The Brower family prefers memorials be
directed to Back to God Hour Radio Program.
Henry Frederick Brower, was born on March 31, 1913, to John
and Anna Brower near Geneva. Raised in rural Geneva, Henry
was educated at the Maysville School. He married Nettie
Ruter on November 30, 1939, in Wellsburg.
Henry and his wife Nettie farmed in Franklin County and
later moved to Wellsburg, where he owned and operated Brower
Surge Equipment. In 1957 Henry and his wife moved to their
farm near Iowa Falls, where they lived until 1992. Then they
retired to Sioux Center. They wintered in Texas for more
than 20 years.
Henry was a charter member of the Iowa Falls Christian
Reformed Church, later a member of the Second Wellsburg
Christian Reformed Church and most recently a member of the
Covenant Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He
enjoyed serving on Consistories and Christian School Boards
and also was involved in certain farm organizations.
Henry was known by friends and family for his clever wit,
practical jokes and pleasure in playing games. He modeled a
gentle Christian character and counted it a privilege to be
responsible for the stewardship of the land he farmed.
He is survived by his son, Joel (Jean) Brower of Byron
Center, Michigan; a daughter, Jerelyn (Dave) Schelhaas of
Sioux Center; five grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren; his brother, Alfred Brower; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie; his sister,
Dena; and his parents.

HAMPTON-R. Leo Abbas, 96, of Hampton, passed away on Sunday,
November 19, 2006, at the Franklin General Hospital in
Hampton from complications of a fall.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 25, at
2:30 p.m., at the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in
rural Geneva, with burial in the church cemetery. The Linn’s
Funeral Home in Ackley is in charge of the arrangements.
R. Leo Abbas, was born on June 21, 1910 at Latimer, the son
of Abel V. and Lena Heitland Abbas. Leo’s parents moved to a
farm north of Ackley and Leo attended country schools in
Grant Township, Franklin County. Leo also attended the
Ackley High School.
Leo was married to Nellie Irene Lauterbach in August of
1931. Nellie passed away in May of 1936. On November 24,
1938, Leo was united in marriage to Lucy Ploeger at her
parents home in rural Ackley. Leo and Lucy farmed the family
farm for many years and he also was a telephone lineman and
repairman and did custom corn shelling.
Leo was a member of the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ
of rural Geneva and served as an elder and was a member of
the church council. For many years Leo was on the Franklin
County Conservation Board. He was also a member of the Isaac
Newton League. Leo was a former member of the Farm Bureau
Board in Franklin County.
Leo enjoyed hunting, bowling and water skied until the age
of 78. Leo and Lucy enjoyed their yearly fishing trips to
northern Canada. He also enjoyed the family sing-a-longs and
would often join in. His daughters remember his ability to
walk on his hands.
Leo is survived by his wife, Lucy of Hampton; daughter, Lena
Mae Winters and husband, Lawrence of Hampton; son, Leon and
his wife, Sallie of Cary, North Carolina; daughter, Linda
Birley and husband, Larry of Aplington; and daughter, Carole
Owen of Austin, Texas.
He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Connie Sparks,
Steven Winters and wife, Debra, Dee Ann Keninger and
husband, Michael, Ryan Winters and wife, Monica, Alex Abbas
and wife, Gail, Greg Abbas and wife, Anca, Vince Birley and
wife, Susan, Dawn Standera and husband, Tony, Jennifer
Bishop and husband, Larry, and Jeff Ellingson;
great-grandchildren, Stephanie Witte and husband, Curtis,
Garrett Winters and wife, Holly, Kelli, Megan, and Brent
Keninger, Theresa, Adam and Paige Winters, Stephen Abbas,
Ben, Connor and Anna Grace Birley, and Ashley and Kelsey
Bishop; and great-great-grandchildren, Sophia Witte and
Alayna Winters.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Abel and Lena
Abbas; his wife, Nellie; a stillborn daughter in 1935; two
Ellingson grandchildren as infants; a sister, Anna Sailer;
and eight brothers, Herman, Mell, Joe, Henry, George, Abel,
Harvey and Reemt Abbas.
Leo will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Pauline Musson, was born on July 23, 1926, the daughter of
Paul and Goldie (Matthews) Stephens in Delphos. She was a
graduate of the Lake City High School.
On April 5, 1946, she was united in marriage to Don Musson
at the Baptist Parsonage in Ames. Pauline was a homemaker as
well as helping out on the farm.
She was a member of the
First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls and also a
member of the Owasa Needle Club.
Pauline is survived by her husband, Don of Iowa Falls; a
daughter, Karen Sue Musson of Iowa Falls; a son, Doug Musson
and wife, Karen Kay of Iowa Falls; four grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and eight
step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Velta Carroll and
husband, Bob of Rochester, Minnesota, Rosalie Nelson of Ames
and Marilyn Mulanix and husband, Tom of Lady Lake, Florida;
two brothers, Roland Stephens and wife, Ann of Boone and
Rick Stephens and wife, Liz of Detroit, Michigan; one

IOWA FALLS-Ivan Dwayne “Smitty” Smith, 86, of Iowa Falls,
passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2006, at the Heritage
Care Center, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 25, at
10:00 a.m., at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with
burial in the St. Mark’s Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Relatives and
friends are invited to a luncheon at the American Legion
Post following services at the cemetery.
Ivan Dwayne “Smitty” Smith, was born on April 21, 1920 at
Williams, the son of Ivan Levi Smith and Gladys Lillian Hurd.
Ivan attended schools and high school at Williams. He farmed
with his parents and grandparents in the Williams area and
then moved to Illinois, where he was employed in a factory
for a short time. Ivan was a veteran of World War II serving
in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945. Smitty was
united in marriage to Theresa Rose Brass on October 14,
1949, in Iowa Falls. Ivan was the owner and operator of
Smith Electric Motors from 1946 until retiring in 1992.
He
was a member of the Iowa Falls Moose Lodge and the
Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post in Iowa Falls, the USS
Alabama Crewman’s Association, the Vestibular Disorders
Association and the EASA “Electrical Apparatus Service
Association.”
Smitty loved to
dance, enjoyed tinkering and visiting with family and
friends. Recently Ivan had been a resident of the Heritage
Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Ivan is survived by his son, Joe Smith of Nevada, Iowa;
daughter, Lisa Brannick and husband, Mark of Iowa Falls; two
brothers, Frances Hoyt Smith and wife, Myrna of Webster City
and Charles Burton Smith and wife, Theone of Las Vegas,
Nevada; special friend, Donna Newcomb of Iowa Falls; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Gladys;
his wife, Theresa in 1973; a son, Steven Smith in 1981;
three sisters, Zella Fleming, Virginia Glee Johnson and
Hazel Marie Wilson; and a brother, Lyle Smith.

STEAMBOAT ROCK-Jacob David Webb-Tubbs, 14, of Steamboat
Rock, formerly of Fort Dodge, went home to be with the Lord
on Wednesday, November 22, 2006, due to injuries he received
in a car accident.
Funeral services are pending with the Laufersweiler-Sievers
Funeral Home in Fort Dodge. The funeral service will be at
the Harvest Baptist Church in Fort Dodge.
Jacob was born on January 17, 1992. Jacob was a student at
AGWSR school in Wellsburg. He was active in a church youth
group in Steamboat Rock.
Throughout Jacob’s life, he participated in football and
wrestling, where he earned several honors and awards. He
also was involved in baseball, basketball and soccer. He
enjoyed stock car racing and had raced in the Hornet Class
in Fort Dodge this year. Jacob enjoyed four-wheeling,
hunting, working on cars, boating and playing his
PlayStation with friends and family.
Jacob is survived by his parents, Shelley Webb and Mark
Tubbs; brother, Alex Tubbs; sisters, Kailey Tubbs and
Chelsie Tubbs; grandparents, Sandy and Jerry Webb and the
late Bobbi and Dorman Tubbs; and aunts and uncles, Angie and
Jamie Odor and Don and Kerri Webb.
Jacob was preceded in death by an uncle, Brent Tubbs;
great-uncle, Bruce Sommerfeld; and great-grandparents,

ELDORA-Oscar Wood, 93, of Eldora and formerly of New
Providence, died on Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at the
Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 25, at
1:30 p.m., at the First Assembly of God in Eldora. The Rev.
Fred Rosenkrans will be officiating. A private committal
service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions
may be directed to the First Assembly of God in Eldora. The
Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard is in charge of the
arrangements.
Oscar Burton Wood, was born on March 1, 1913, to Burton R.
and Edna (Bunker) Wood on the family farm east of New
Providence. He was raised on the farm. He attended and
graduated from the New Providence High School in 1931. Oscar
attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa.
On March 16, 1939, he was united in marriage to Marjorie
Alice Ludwick at the Friends Parsonage in Oskaloosa. She
passed away on May 6, 1993. They made their home in the New
Providence area where Oscar farmed until retiring in 1975.
After his retirement, they spent most of their time
wintering in McAllen, Texas and Oscar helped Neil on the
farm in his spare time.
On February 16, 2002, Oscar was united in marriage to
Gertrude Eileen (Ford) Bailey, at the First Assembly of God
Church in Eldora. Oscar then resided in Eldora since 2002.
Those thankful for having shared in his life include his
wife, Gertrude of Eldora; three daughters, Virginia Canfield
and husband, Ray of Placentia, California, Alice Hadley and
husband, Neil of Union and Teresa and husband, Bruce Miller
of Bicknell, Indiana; nine grandchildren; 15
great-grandchildren; along with other relatives and friends.
Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; first wife,
Marjorie; his sisters, Aletha McKenzie and Faye Rash; and a
granddaughter, Ashley Faye.

Dorothy Mae Meyer, was born on July 18, 1919 at Iowa Falls,
the daughter of Fred and Mollie (Gnade) Meyer. She attended
the Iowa Falls Community Schools.
On May 30, 1942, she was united in marriage to Harald Bach.
Dorothy worked at the drug store for most of the years they
lived in Dows. Then she was employed at Riverside Book and
Bible in Iowa Falls, as a telephone sales operator.
She
enjoyed going to Bible Conventions all around the United
States with the other salespeople. At the conventions she
enjoyed meeting many of the authors of books she sold and
also the store owners who retailed those books. But most of
all she enjoyed making and sending chocolate chip cookies to
her grandchildren and called herself the cookie grandma.
Dorothy Bach is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Nachazel
and husband, Lynn of Iowa Falls; her son, Dennis Bach and
wife, Mary of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; five sisters, Freda Winter of Iowa
Falls, Mildred (Robert) Poland of Kewanee, Illinois, Maxine
Barton of Yarrington, Nevada, Wilma Wulke of Marshalltown,
Arlene Smit of Iowa Falls and Marilyn (Dean) Furman of
Bradford; one brother, Leonard (Annabel) Meyer of Iowa
Falls; and her brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Maxine

Virginia Henning Tatum

NEW PROVIDENCE—Virginia Tatum, 88, of New Providence, died
on Wednesday, November 22, 2006, in her home.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 26, at the
Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church in New Providence.
Memorials may be made to the Honey Creek New Providence
Church for kitchen improvements. Arrangements were entrusted
to the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.
Virginia was born on April 29, 1918, daughter of Burl and
Maureen (Kegrice) Henning of Scranton, Iowa. She was the
oldest of six children. She graduated from the Scranton High
School in 1926 and received her B.S. in Home Economics from
William Penn College in 1940.
Virginia taught home economics and physical education at her
first teaching assignment in Russell, Iowa. She met Lawrence
through the Young Friends at Ackworth and both attended
William Penn College. Virginia and Lawrence were married in
1941 and moved to Quakerdale Farm in New Providence. They
had celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary prior to
Lawrence’s death in 2004.
Virginia was a 4-H Leader for 10 years and served as the
church’s nursery teacher and Sunday School Superintendent
for many years. Virginia resumed teaching home economics in
1964 at the Owasa High School in Owasa. In 1967, she began
an 18-year commitment to young people receiving special
education at the Iowa Falls High School in Iowa Falls. One
month after her retirement in 1986, Virginia and Lawrence
took a trip of a life time to visit their niece, Pam White,
for a month in Columbia, South America.
Survivors include her three daughters, Judy Davis of Des
Moines, Nancy Stevens (George) of LeRoy, Illinois and Debra
Moyer (Mike) of Oskaloosa; one son-in-law, Michael Grim
(Lori Tatum Grim, deceased) of Eddyville; 11 grandchildren,
Tim Davis, Ben Davis, Billy D. Davis, Michael Davis, Dee
Anne McCarthy, Robin Bishop, Melissa Junge, Jeff Stevens,
James Stevens, Megan Hogar and Tatum Moyer; 14
great-grandchildren, Austin, Drake, Aidan, Sophia, Ella,
Isabel and Xavier Davis, Audia McCarthy, Marissa Barry,
Kirstin Newby, Madison Stevens, Logan and Taylor Hogar, and
Kellen Bishop; many nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and
nephews.
Surviving siblings include B. J. Henning of Lake City,
Minnesota, Joyce Herron of Dallas, Texas, Vance Henning of
Scranton, Iowa and Homer Henning of Rockford, Illinois.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence
Tatum; one daughter, Lori Tatum Grim; her parents, Burl and
Maureen Henning; and one sister, Ruth Cook of New
Providence.

Clara J. Larson

HUBBARD—Clara J. Larson, 101, of Hubbard, died on Friday,
November 24, 2006, at the Hubbard Care Center Inc.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 28, at the
Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, with the Revs. John
Attaway and Shirley Larson officiating. Clara Larson was
buried in the Hubbard Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home in
Hubbard was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be
made to the Hospice of North Iowa or The Iowa Library for
the Blind.
Clara Judith (Teig) Larson, was born on December 5, 1904 in
Radcliffe, to Carl Johan and Julia (Berve) Teig. She was
baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in
Radcliffe and attended school in Lakefield, Minnesota and
Radcliffe.
Clara married Ira Edward Larson Sr. on March 22, 1928 in
Albert Lea, Minnesota. Clara and Ira lived in Radcliffe for
two years and settled in Hubbard in 1930. Ira died in 1965,
after 37 years of marriage, joint management of the family
business, Larson’s Inc., and the birth and raising of five
children. Clara completed training at the Iowa School of
Beauty and worked as a beautician, telephone operator and
bookkeeper. Clara retired from the family business in 1979
after 25 years of service.
Among her many other family and community roles were queen
of the care center, oldest person in town, wielder of the
red clobbering stick and ruler of all things Norwegian.
Clara was an early member of the Progressive Club, an active
Bridge Club member, and member of the Zion United Church of
Christ. She was a master at the Norwegian art of Hardanger
until the loss of her eyesight, but lost no momentum by
turning to beautifully crafted crocheting that she shared
widely with family and the community.
Clara enjoyed having her family near her and served as the
beloved matriarch throughout her long and gracious life. Her
generous and welcoming nature along with her wit and humor
held true to the end of her life.
Clara is survived by three children, David Lee Larson and
wife, Elaine of Hubbard, Sana Kay Zierke and husband, Arlen
of Hubbard and Sallie Christine Harestad and husband, Robert
of Roland; two daughter-in-laws, Shirley Murphy Larson
(husband Ed deceased) of Blacksburg, Virginia and Harriet
Lewis Larson Tresemer (husband Carl deceased) of Red Oak; 14
grandchildren, Teresa Haarhues, Kim Larson, Raymond Tresemer,
Roxanne Rolph, Holly Larson Lesko, Matthew, Timothy and
Samuel Larson, Eric, Borge and David Zierke, Jeffery
Harestad, Jill Nerem and Joe Harestad; 36
great-grandchildren, Hannah, Coleman, Sophie, Kendra, Kami,
Megan, Thomas, Ryan, Katie, Korey, Kasey and Samuel, Teig,
Cara, Aubree, Nora, Vanessa, Henry, Bailey, Katie, Anna,
Alexandra, Rachel, James, Susana, Eric Benjamin, Ethan,
Erica, Mason, Hannah, Addie, Jordan, Malachi, Angela, Joshua
and Garret; and six great-great-grandchildren, Myah, Palmer,
Gracie, Chance, Lauren and Braden.
Clara also extended her family embrace to many nieces,
nephews, cousins, brothers- and sisters-in-law, along with
the numerous “honorary” Larson and Teig family members.
Clara was preceded in death by her mother and father; her
husband, Ira; two sons, Carl Teig and Ira “Edward”; 11
siblings; and granddaughter, Rhonda Rullestad.

ROWLETT, Texas—Blaine Louise (Koeppen) Cronk, passed away on
Friday, November 24, 2006, in Rowlett, Texas.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 2, at
1:00 p.m., at the Sunnyview in Rockwell City, Iowa. Private
burial will be in the Buckeye Cemetery following the
service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the
American Cancer Society, Friends of the Library, or to the
charity of choice.
Blaine was born on March 26, 1921 at Jolley, Iowa, to Arnold
and Katherine (Nutter) Koeppen. She graduated from the
Jolley High School in 1938. Blaine attended Buena Vista
College in Storm Lake and earned her teaching certificate.
She later obtained her B.S. Degree in Education from Drake
University. She taught school at Buckeye, Radcliffe and Iowa
Falls, for many years before retiring in 1979.
She married Eldon Topp in 1942. The couple had two children,
Charlotte and Deane. Eldon passed away on November 10, 1958.
In 1959, she married George Kennedy. Her marriage to George
ended in 1978. In 1979, Blaine married Victor Cronk and
they retired to Rogers, Arkansas. Vic died in May 1991.
Blaine eventually moved to Vernon, Texas, Rockwell City,
Iowa and finally to Rowlett and Mesquite, Texas.
Blaine did volunteer work in hospitals, schools and for
many years in the public libraries in Rogers, Arkansas and
Vernon, Texas. Her hobbies were making porcelain dolls and
china painting. She was a member of the Friends of the
Library, a member of the National Education Association and
a Life Member of the Vernon, Texas Hospital Auxiliary.
She leaves her children, Charlotte Donelson and her husband,
Bill of Mesquite, Texas and Deane Topp and his wife, Mollie
of Rowlett, Texas; five grandchildren, Carmen Slade and
family of Austin, Texas, Ryan Donelson and family of Austin,
Texas, Lorraine Wright and family of Wheat Ridge, Colorado,
Brian Topp of Aurora, Colorado and Steve Topp and family of
Mansfield, Texas; and there are also 10 wonderful
great-grandchildren.
Sibling survivors include sisters, Doris George of South
Sioux City, Iowa, Phyllis (and Sylvester) Nelson, Madge
Hathoway and brother, Neil (and Loretta) Koeppen, all of
Rockwell City.
Her sister, Katherine Rastetter; parents; and husbands
preceded her in death.

ACKLEY—MaryJane Harken, 91, of Ackley, died on Saturday,
November 25, 2006, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday,
November 29, at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.
MaryJane Harken, was born on August 25, 1915 at Minneapolis,
Minnesota, the daughter of John Basil and Jessie
(Satterfield) Chegwyn. MaryJane moved to Eldora at a young
age and received her education there, graduating from the
Eldora High School. She married Raymond Theodore Harken on
June 19, 1936, at Parkersburg.
She was a member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ
in Ackley, St. John’s Women’s Groups, Eastern Star and a
Girl Scout Leader. MaryJane was an avid golfer who truly
loved to play the game.
She is survived by one daughter, Jane Schlampp of Ackley;
one son, Philip Harken and his wife, Joyce of Phoenix,
Arizona; one sister, Dorothy Kopel of Lagrange, Georgia;
nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter,
Norma Renken; brother, Norman Chegwyn; and a son-in-law,
Robert L. Schlampp.

IOWA FALLS—Bertha L. Woods, 84, of Iowa Falls, passed away
on Saturday, November 25, 2006, at the Ellsworth Hospital,
Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday,
November 29, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with
burial in the Hampton Cemetery, Hampton. The Linn’s Funeral
Homes Iowa Falls Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Bertha Luceal Dohlman, was born on April 24, 1922 at Pierre,
South Dakota, the daughter of John Harms and Bertha
Christiana (Wiener) Dohlman. She attended grade school in
Hansell, and graduated from the Aredale High School with the
class of 1939.
On November 16, 1946, Bertha was united in marriage to
Robert Franklin Woods at Des Moines. She was employed as a
cook for the Iowa Falls High School and Ellsworth Community
College. She also operated the Montgomery Wards Catalog
Store in Iowa Falls.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa
Falls. She had been active in Girl Scouts (a leader), Boy
Scouts, Bible School, and the Iowa Falls Parent Teachers
Association while her children were in school.
Bertha L. Woods is survived by her husband, Robert F. Woods
of Iowa Falls; her daughters, Linda Ingebritson and husband,
Mike of Iowa Falls and Susan Copp and husband, Lynn of Iowa
Falls; her son, Jim Woods and companion, Kathy Weydert of
Lakewood, Colorado; five grandchildren, Michelle Allen of
Scottsdale, Arizona, Ryan Allen and wife, Nichole of Iowa
Falls, Amanda Keninger and husband, Sam of Burnsville,
Minnesota, Evan Eichmeier of Iowa Falls and Christopher Copp
of Iowa Falls; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Ben and
Jillian Keninger of Burnsville, Minnesota and Carson Allen
of Iowa Falls; one sister, Helen O’Dea of Hampton; two
brothers, Delos Dohlman and wife, Alice of Hampton and
Dallas Dohlman of Hampton; a brother-in-law, Irv Christian
of Grandon, North Dakota; a sister-in-law, Louise Dohlman of

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Bertha

AMES—Betty Jane Fosberg, 76, of Ames, formerly of Alden,
died on Sunday, November 26, 2006, at the Israel Hospice
House in Ames.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday,
November 30, at the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ames,
with burial in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. There will be a
luncheon at the Moose Lodge following the interment.
Visitation will be from 5-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the
Surls Funeral Home in Alden.
Betty Jane Fosberg, was born on October 18, 1930 at Webster
City, the daughter of Charles Franklin and Bessie Emiline (Butrum)
McGuire. She received her education in Webster City and
graduated from the Webster City High School.
Betty Jane was united in marriage to John Cordell Fosberg on
August 14, 1949, at the Methodist Church in Webster City.
She retired from the Ames Daily Tribune where she was a
bookkeeper.
Betty Jane was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church,
Women of the Moose, American Legion Auxiliary and past
member of the College of Regents, all in Ames. Betty will
always be remembered for her love of family and friends.
Betty enjoyed watching football and basketball, playing
cards, bingo and going out for coffee or lunch with family
and friends.
Survivors include her son, Douglas John Fosberg and wife,
Delores of Jacksonville, North Carolina; daughter, Janet
Elaine (Houser) Greve of Marshalltown; grandchildren,
Rebecca Fosberg Thornton and husband, Vernon of Raleigh,
North Carolina, Michael Lee Houser of Nevada and Christopher
Houser of Nevada; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Amber
Thornton of Raleigh, North Carolina; and several nieces,
nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two
brothers; four sisters; one nephew; and one niece.

IOWA FALLS—William George Jacobson, 76, of Iowa Falls, died
on Sunday, November 26, 2006, at the Israel Hospice House in
Ames.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday,
December 1, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with
burial in the Union Cemetery.
William George Jacobson, was born on July 19, 1930 at
Windom, Minnesota, the son of Sophus and Pearl (Harper)
Jacobson. He received his education at local schools in
Windom. William served his country in the U.S. Navy with the
Air Anti-Submarine Squadron.
He married Juanita Richarson at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua. The couple later divorced. He was a member of the
Hyman-Peavey American Legion in Iowa Falls, and past member
of the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge, both of Iowa Falls.
William was a manager and butcher with Fareway in Iowa
Falls, retiring in 1984.
Survivors include his daughter, Darla Jacobson of Ames; two
sons, Dirk Jon Jacobson of Ames and Ben Julius Caplan and
wife, Lucretia of Alden; four grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; a sister, Phyllis Phelps and her husband,
Eugene of Vinton; and special friend, Linda Van-Heiden of
Iowa Falls.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Beatty Burkhart,
Betty Moritz, Doris Berndt and Oral Warner; and one brother,
Jack Jacobson.

GARDEN CITY—Verdelle Friest, 95, formerly of Garden City,
died on Sunday, November 26, 2006, at the Hubbard Care
Center in Hubbard.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 30, at the
Stavanger Lutheran Church in Garden City, with the Rev. Earl
Korhonen officiating. Burial was in the Stavanger Lutheran
Cemetery. The Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe was in charge
of the arrangements.
Verdelle (Amundson) Friest, was born on June 8, 1911, on a
farm northwest of Radcliffe. She was the youngest of nine
children born to Alex and Julia (Johnson) Amundson. She grew
up on a farm 1/2 mile west of Radcliffe.
She received her education by attending a rural school and
the Radcliffe High School, graduating with the class of
1929. She lived at home, helped her parents and worked
various jobs until she married.
On March 7, 1935, she was united in marriage to Amos Friest
by Pastor Barstad. After their marriage they settled in
Garden City where Verdelle became a homemaker, raising seven
children. Her family was her first priority and remained so
until her death.
She was a member of the Radcliffe Garden Club, served as a
4-H Leader, enjoyed quilting, and pieced and quilted a quilt
for each of her seven children and several of her
grandchildren. She was a member of the Stavanger Lutheran
Church, where she had been active in the Dorcas Society.
She became a resident of the Hubbard Care Center in October
2002.
Those thankful for having shared her life include her seven
children, Patricia (John) Teager of Tucson, Arizona, Sandra
(Paul) Tungesvick of Loveland, Colorado, Jacqueline Henry of
Vail, Colorado, David (Darla) Friest of Lutsen, Minnesota,
Douglas (Carol) Friest of Harrisburg, South Dakota, Julie
(Bruce) Bergeson of Radcliffe and Debra (Mike) Dubberke of
Hubbard; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two
sisters-in-law, Frances Broer of New Hampton and Charlotte
Friest of Garden City; along with many other relatives and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Amos;
three sisters, Clara Arneson, Anna Osmundson and Gertie
Wierson; and five brothers, Albert, Ed, Alfred, Archie and
James Amundson.

Ralph R. "Buster" Allbee

ELDORA—Ralph R. “Buster” Allbee, 92, of Eldora, died from
natural causes on Monday, November 27, 2006, at the Grundy
County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 1, at the
First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora, with
the Rev. Corey Larson officiating. Burial followed in the
Eldora City Cemetery, with military honors provided by the
Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and the Roll-Harless
Post 3974 of the VFW. The Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora
was in charge of the arrangements.
Ralph was born on August 23, 1914 in rural Eldora, the son
of Benjamin and Grace (Rubendall) Allbee. He was educated in
the Eldora School System and on June 16, 1931, he was united
in marriage to Bernice A. Leggett in South Dakota.
Ralph was a World War II veteran serving from 1943 to 1945
as a Motor Man 2nd Class on PT Boats, receiving the Purple
Heart. He worked as a driver for REA Express in Iowa Falls,
then operated Modern Dry Cleaning in Eldora for several
years before retiring in 1974.
He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of
Christ, Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the American Legion
and Roll-Harless Post No. 3974 of the VFW, where he held
several offices. Ralph was also a volunteer fireman for many
years and a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice; daughter-in-law, Donna
Allbee of Eldora; grandchildren, Steve (Robin) Allbee of
Eldora, Mark (Deborah) Allbee of Temecula, California, Cathy
(Mike) Fife of Penasquitas, California, Ralph J. (Lynn)
Allbee of Eldora, Annette (Danny) Duncan of Sonora,
California and Liz Allbee Wolfe of Eldora; sister, Mary Jean
Goodell of Eldora; and many great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Ives;
sister, Mildred Alhovesky; and brothers, Dale and Kenny.

formerly of Iowa Falls, passed away on Monday, November 27,
2006, at the Maple Manor Independent Living Community,
Aplington.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 1, at the
Church of the Open Bible, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Herb
Kenyon officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Gideons
c/o the Memorial Bible Program, Iowa River Camp, P.O. Box
253, Iowa Falls, IA 50126. Burial was in the Northlawn
Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The Linn’s Funeral

Emma June Beal, was born on June 14, 1923 at Geneva, the
daughter of Melvin Lowell Beal and Ethyl Grace (Skinner)
Beal. She attended the Geneva Community Schools.
On December 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to Ted
Murra at Kakoka, Missouri. To this union three daughters
were born, Myra, Tami and Linda.
On March 2, 1991, she was united in marriage to Eugene
Rininger at Iowa Falls.
Emma June was a loving wife and
mother to her children, she considered that to be her major
occupation. She was a member of the Open Bible Church, Iowa
Falls since 1948, where she taught Sunday School and worked
in many other capacities. She was also a member of the Gideons International Bible Society.
Emma June Rininger, is survived by her daughters, Myra Murra
of New Berlin, Wisconsin, Tami Hawley and husband, Tom of
Ottumwa and Linda Perschbacher and husband, Sonny of
Florissant, Colorado; six grandchildren, Kari Clappier and
husband, Eric of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Ryan Perschbacher of
Denver, Colorado, Teri Yackley and husband, Steve of Fort
Benning, Georgia, Traci Hawley of Ottumwa, Tricia Hawley of
Ames and Tess Hawley of Ottumwa; two great-grandchildren,
Allison and Elizabeth Clappier of Brookfield, Wisconsin; and
one sister, Belle Branon of Hampton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, E. Grace and
Melvin Beal; her two husbands, Ted Murra and Eugene Rininger;

Marjorie A. Engelson

ALDEN-Marjorie A. Engelson,
85, of Alden, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2006,
at the Mercy Hospital, Mason City.
A time of remembrance and visitation will be held at 5:00
p.m., on Saturday, December 9, at the Linn’s Funeral Chapel
Iowa Falls. Inurnment will be in the Union Cemetery, Iowa
Falls. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Alden Chapel has been
entrusted with the arrangements.
Marjorie Ann Stiner, was
born on April 27, 1921 at Iowa Falls, the daughter of Joseph
and Anna (Haydock) Stiner. She attended the Iowa Falls
Community School, graduating in 1938.
On January 3, 1942, she was united in marriage to Albert Lee
Roe at Bethany, Missouri. To this union five children were
born, Linda, twins Loran and Norman, Ronny and Randy. After
Albert’s death, she was united in marriage to Cecil O.
Engelson.
Marjorie had been employed as a seamstress with Boyt
Manufacturing, Iowa Falls and with Infant Seat, Eldora.
She
also loved the outdoors, walking nature trails, hunting Iowa
clams and riding horses (in her early years she was the
first female jockey at Webster City and even won races
there).
Left to mourn her passing are her children, Linda Campbell
and husband, Robert of Des Moines, Loran Roe and wife, Lynn
of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ronny Roe and wife, Fran of Cedar
Rapids and Randy Smuck and husband, Steve of Alden; eight
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anna
Stiner; her two husbands, Albert Roe and Cecil Engelson; an
infant son, Norman Roe; a brother, Maurice Stiner; and a
sister, Merna Kiley.

Kenneth P. Peterson

ELDORA—Kenneth P. Peterson, 72, of Eldora, died from natural
causes on Thursday, November 30, 2006, at the Eldora Nursing
and Rehab Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 4, at the St.
Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, with the Rev. David Splett
officiating. Graveside and military services were in the
Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock. The Creps-Abels Funeral
Home in Eldora was in charge of the arrangements.
Kenneth was born on February 28, 1934 at Bancroft, the son
of Peter O. and Marie Dorothy (Rambath) Peterson. He
attended the Bancroft Public School and in 1944 his family moved
to Algona, where he graduated from the Algona High School in
1953. Kenneth served in the U.S. Marine Corps from November
3, 1953, to November 4, 1956, in the South Pacific during
the Korean Conflict.
On September 28, 1957, he was united in marriage to Nedra
Heise at the Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. Kenneth
and Nedra lived in Waterloo until purchasing a bakery in
Eldora in 1963. Kenneth operated the bakery for 15 years
then worked for the Hy-Vee Bakery and Nash Finch Bakery
until his retirement.
He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora,
Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and several
bakery associations. He enjoyed fishing and golfing in his
younger years and his grandchildren were his pride and joy.
He is survived by his wife, Nedra; daughters, Lela Marie
Murch (John) of Indianapolis, Indiana and Lesa Ann Ramson of
Colorado Springs, Colorado; son, Steven Lynn Peterson of
Eldora; grandchildren, Johnny Murch (Amy), Daniel Murch and
Matthew Ransom; great-grandchild, Logan; and sister, Maxine
Lashbrook.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; brothers,
Orville and Marvin; and sisters, Tressie and Luella.

MARS, Pennsylvania—Lauren E. Muehlheuser, inspirational
daughter of Kurt J. and Shawn E. Finnegan Muehlheuser, age
11, of Mars, Pennsylvania, passed away on Thursday, November
30, 2006, at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Friends were received at the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home,
Inc. of Mars on Sunday, December 3. A Mass of Christian
Burial in the St. Killian Roman Catholic Church in Mars was
held on Monday, December 4. The Rev. Charles Bober
officiated.
She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 3, 1995,
and was a fifth-grade student at the Mars Elementary School.
A member of the St. Killian Roman Catholic Church in Mars,
she enjoyed dance at the Pittsburgh Dance Academy in Mars
and acting with Act One. Her zest for life was contagious to
all whom she came in contact with.
At 16 months of age, she was the recipient of a double organ
transplant. As part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, her dream
came true with a trip to Disney World in Florida.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister,
Megan Muehlheuser and twin brother, Jack Muehlheuser, both
at home; her paternal grandmother, Audrey Muehlheuser of
Pittstown, New Jersey; her maternal grandparents, Dale and
Judy Bass Finnegan of Iowa Falls; her maternal
great-grandmother, Agnes Finnegan of Des Moines; as well as
many aunts, uncles, cousins and many wonderful friends
across the country, and not to be forgotten, her dog, “Georgie.”
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Frank
Muehlheuser.
