Kruse Remembered Fondly
By Kent Thompson
MANAGING EDITOR
IOWA
FALLS—Those who knew
him say Thomas A. Kruse was a man of high business principles and
business sense, a man of devout faith and enormous generosity.
Kruse died on Friday, March 31, at the
age of 75. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, at 1:00 p.m., at
the Bethany Lutheran Church.
Kruse was the CEO of IVESCO, formerly
Iowa Veterinary Supply Co., a company he began working for in 1953 and
a company he built into one of the largest veterinary supply
distributors in the United States. IVESCO remains one of the few
successful family owned companies in the animal health distribution
business.
Harley Rummel of Dows started Iowa
Veterinary Supply Co. shortly after World War II. In 1966, Kruse and Ken
Madole purchased the business from Rummel. At that time there were two
locations, Iowa Falls and Mankato, Minnesota and 14 employees. Kruse became
president and majority stockholder when Madole retired in 1983. Today,
IVESCO has 23 locations and employs 500 people in the Midwest, South and
Southeast U.S.
Kruse’s story might not be unique, but
the man himself certainly was. “He was a highly respected member of the
industry. He has probably done more to influence the marketing and
distribution of animal health products than anyone else,” said former
general manager and financial officer at Iowa Vet, John Dolan. Why was
Tom A. Kruse more successful in business than some of his competitors?
“He was certainly a gentleman with a tremendous vision,” Dolan said. “I
think his respect came about because of his boardroom expertise with
major manufacturers. He influenced them not because of some lofty
position he held, but from face-to-face dialogue with these people.
That’s how he operated. He was a very effective communicator.”
They also say great leaders are
visionary and Kruse certainly exhibited that trait. “One of the things
about Tom that impressed me was his forward thinking and
farsightedness,” IVESCO director of marketing Gary Huffine said. Huffine
has worked for the company here since 1979. “In 1980, Tom saw the need
for the company to be computerized at a time when many in the industry
were fighting the change. He wasn’t afraid to expand and develop branch
offices where there were people and animals to take care of,” Huffine
said. A case in point. When the swine industry began to change to
confinement feeding operations by larger companies, Kruse saw the need
for animal health products and expanded his animal health distribution
system.
When Premium Standard Farms started
its company headquarters in Princeton, Missouri in the early 1990s, Iowa
Veterinary Supply started a center there to serve their needs. In the
late 1990s, the company started a branch office in Stratford, Texas, to
serve the growing animal feeding operations in the Texas panhandle
region. “Tom’s philosophy was to put a lot of faith and trust in people.
He allowed people to work and make mistakes but to learn from them. I
think he saw the best in people and got the best out of people,” Huffine
remarked. “He didn’t do anything to draw attention to himself. He
believed in adding value to anything, including his employees,” Dolan
said. “He empowered his employees,” long before most people knew what
empowerment was. “He didn’t measure success and failures by emotion. He
never kept score,” Dolan said. “He never boasted with his successes or
complained when there were setbacks. There was no volatility about him
in his leadership style.”
Community Giving
Kruse was not just well respected
professionally and as a businessman, but as a generous and caring member
of the community. “He ranks among a handful of the best businessmen I’ve
ever dealt with,” said Steve Afdahl, President of the Green Belt Bank &
Trust in Iowa Falls. Afdahl served with Kruse on the Iowa Falls Area
Industrial Development Corp. and the Scenic City Civic Foundation. “He
was an extremely generous person. Not everyone as successful in business
has been as generous to the community as Tom and his wife, LaVonne have
been,”
Afdahl said. “The other thing that I
have always admired about Tom was his strong Christian faith. He was a
person who really walked the walk and put his faith into action to help
others,” the bank president recalled. Kruse and his family were lead
contributors to several community projects, among them the Ellsworth
College Pool, Iowa Falls Fire Station/Emergency Center and several
hospital and clinic expansion fund drives.
In April 1996, the ECC Main Building
was renamed Kruse-Main in honor of the couple for their personal
leadership and generous financial support to the college. Both Tom and
LaVonne were ECC grads, Tom in ‘51 and LaVonne in ‘54 and both held a
strong commitment to supporting advanced education and learning. Not
only was he a lead contributor to major causes, but he took a special
interest in aiding the poor and the handicapped. “He did a lot of things
people didn’t know about of a charitable nature to help support those
people less fortunate than himself,” Dolan said.
Doug Stayrook is a national account
manager with Alpharma, one of the animal health companies IVESCO does
business with. Stayrook was contacted via cellular phone Tuesday near
Columbus, Ohio. He is planning to fly into Des Moines today and travel
to Iowa Falls to attend the funeral. “I’m pretty safe in saying every
major animal health company will have a representative at the funeral.
Tom Sr. has had a big impact on the animal health industry,” Stayrook
said. “Tom gave people opportunity and he also seized it,” Dolan said.
Because of that his business was successful and his community a better
place to live.
