July 1, 2006
NAPLES, Florida—Mr. Tony S. Gentle, co-founder of the Krause Gentle
Corporation and the Kum & Go stores, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at
the age of 92 at the Naples Community Hospital in Florida, following a courageous
battle with cancer, with his family at his bedside.
A Mass of Christian Burial and
celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, July 6, at the St.
Mark’s Catholic Church, Iowa Falls. Visitation at St. Mark’s is
scheduled from 5-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, July 5, followed by a vigil service at 7:00
p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa
Falls High School Scholarship Fund or the T.S. Gentle Center at Ellsworth
Community College.
The son of Italian immigrants, Anthony “Tony” Gentle was born on November 3, 1913 in
Waterloo. He grew up working in his family’s fruit and vegetable store.
Following college and marriage to Mary Angela “Ange” Downing, his wife of 68
years, he embarked on an entrepreneurial journey that grew to impact the retail
business environment of Iowa and beyond.
In 1959, Tony Gentle bought a gas station in Hampton and began a partnership
with his son-in-law, W.A. “Bill” Krause, to launch what became known as the Kum
& Go
convenience stores. The partners successfully pioneered modern convenience
industry practices. Kum & Go is now in 13 states with 445 stores. Today, Kum &
Go, L.C. stores have become America’s 20th largest convenience store chain and
are known nationwide for their customer focus, product assortment and innovative
marketing.
An only child, Mr. Gentle graduated in 1932 from the Iowa Falls High School and then
enrolled in Ellsworth Community College. In 1933, he transferred to Loras
College in Dubuque to study business, where he also met his future wife, Ange.
Following college, he was owner and operated a collection agency in Waterloo.
He purchased a smoke shop in Iowa Falls which he operated until he was called to
serve in the Army in 1943, where he was stationed in Germany. At the end of
World War II, Mr. Gentle purchased Rite Drug in Iowa Falls and operated it
until 1965. During that time, he expanded his business interests by purchasing a
gas station in Hampton in 1959. From this, other small gas stations also were
purchased, leading to the development of the Krause Gentle Corporation.
Mr. Gentle was a past board member of the Iowa Valley Community College Foundation
and an active member of the Elks Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American
Legion.
Tony Gentle is survived by his wife, Mary Angela; and his daughter, Nancy Susan
and her husband, W.A. “Bill” Krause of West Des Moines; grandchildren,
Kevin (Mary) Krause of Davenport, Kyle (Sharon) Krause of Booneville and Kate
(David) Krause Prange of Chicago, Illinois; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory, A

Tony Gentle,
Committed
to Iowa Falls
Gentle’s Career of Hard Work
By LaDona
Roelfs
July 1, 2006
Iowa
Falls-The name Tony Gentle is familiar to many people in Iowa Falls, not
only because of the Ellsworth Community College Gentle Student Center, but
also because of the man behind the name.
After a long battle with bone cancer, Tony
Gentle died last Wednesday at the Naples Community Hospital in Florida.
Throughout the years, Gentle, longtime resident of Iowa Falls, has been
committed to this community and its people through his continued support to
the Ellsworth College Foundation and other civic groups.
Tony got his start at a young age, learning
to work hard as he helped his father and five uncles operate fruit and
vegetable stores in Waterloo in the early 1900s. When the Hoxie Food Company
built a new fruit and vegetable distributorship in Iowa Falls, Gentle’s
Italian immigrant parents, Charles and Rose, moved the family and opened a
new fruit and vegetable store here. After graduation from IFHS, Tony
enrolled at Ellsworth Community College, but due to health problems he
withdrew and in 1933 continued his education at Loras College in Dubuque,
where he studied business. It was during that time, he met Mary Angela
Downing, whom he lovingly referred to as “Ange."
Although Gentle was not an ECC graduate,
former ECC Dean Duane Lloyd said Tony Gentle was “proud of the college and
extremely generous in his support of it.” In 1993, Tony and his wife
transferred securities in the amount of $250,000 to the Ellsworth College
Foundation. It was one of the largest gifts at that time in the college’s
history. To show appreciation for the gift, the Foundation Board requested
that the administration and Board of Directors of the Iowa Valley Community
College District name the new student center the Gentle Student Center. The
building was dedicated in September 1993.
“Bill Krause once told me that Tony cared
very deeply for Ellsworth College and for Iowa Falls,” Lloyd said,
remembering Gentle. “He was a longtime supporter of the E-Club as well and
might have even been one of the early originators of it."
Throughout his career, Tony bought and sold
a variety of businesses, including a collection agency in Waterloo and The
Smoke Shop in Iowa Falls. In 1943, he was called to serve in the U.S. Army
and was stationed in Germany during World War II. In Germany, Pfc. Gentle was
attached to the 84th Infantry Division. He started out as a second
ammunition carrier on a 30-caliber machine gun squad and toward the end of
the war was a first sergeant in charge of a squad that participated in the
entire Battle of the Bulge, in which he received the Bronze Star.
“Tony was also very proud of his military
service,” Lloyd said, noting that during the 2002 Riverbend Rally parade, he
participated by riding on the float honoring local veterans.
While serving in the war, Gentle sold The
Smoke Shop and upon his return to Iowa Falls purchased Rite Drug which he
operated until 1965. From there, along with son-in-law Bill Krause, he
turned a small gas station in Hampton (purchased in 1963) into Krause Gentle
Corporation, which now owns the Kum & Go chain of 445 convenience stores in
13 states as well as a fleet of Solar Transport trucks hauling liquid
petroleum.
During their later years, Gentle and his
wife spent a good deal of time, particularly during the winter months, in
their Naples, Florida home.
