Joan Meyer, 70, of Alden, died on Monday, September 2, 2002,
at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be
held on Friday, September 6, at 10:00 a.m., at the
Missionary Alliance Church in Blairsburg, with burial in the Alden Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Thursday, September 5, from 12-8:00 p.m., at
the Surls
Funeral Home in Alden, with the family receiving friends from 6-8:00 p.m.

Bruno DeBeer

Bruno DeBeer, 72, of Parkersburg, died on Tuesday, September
3, 2002, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Services were
held on Thursday, September 5, at the Hope Reformed Church with burial in
the Oak
Hill Cemetery, both in Parkersburg. Rev. Neal Ooms officiated.
Bruno was born on May 4, 1930 near Parkersburg, to Otto and Etta Peters DeBeer. He was educated in the Parkersburg community schools. On
December 22, 1951, he married Dorothy Uhlenhopp at the Little Brown
Church at Nashua. They lived in Parkersburg for five years and he
worked at Rath Packing Company at Waterloo, then moved to a farm near
Parkersburg where they lived for 35 years. They moved into
Parkersburg in 1995.
He served in the United States Army in the
Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 285 in
Parkersburg and of the Hope Reformed Church where he served as
deacon and elder. His hobbies were fishing and having coffee with
friends.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Diane Sikkema of
Lockport, Illinois, Bev Harms and husband, Al of Clarksville and
Charlotte Koenen and husband, Steve of Aplington; six grandchildren;
and one sister, LuEtta Spree of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and a granddaughter.
The
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Parkersburg, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Mildred Elling

Mildred E. Elling, 84, of Hampton, died on Thursday, September 5,
2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.
Services were held on
Monday, September 9, at the First United Congregational Church of Christ
in Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Marlys Ruth
officiated.
Mildred was born on February 22, 1918 in Cerro Gordo County, to Bardelt and
Hannah Hagen Weers. She was raised at Mason City and graduated from
the Mason City High School and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar
Falls. On March 12, 1947, she married Rex Elling in Mason City. She
taught school at Burchinal and Clear Lake and was a salesperson at
Stover Real Estate in Hampton for many years.
She was a member of
the First Congregational Church of Hampton. Her hobbies were
gardening, flowers and dancing at the Surf Ballroom.
She is survived by her husband, Rex; two sons, Larry Elling and
wife, Judy of Janesville and Glenn Elling of Hampton; a brother,
Elmer Weers of Mason City; and two grandchildren, Michael and
Michelle.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister,
Lillian Staff; a sister-in-law, Rosalind Weers; and a
brother-in-law, Lloyd Staff.
The
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Hampton, was in charge of

Bertha Bates

Bertha M. Bates, of Iowa Falls, died on Sunday, September 8,
2002, at the Satori Hospital in Cedar Falls.
Services will be held on
Saturday, September 14, at the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls, with
burial in the Northlawn Memory Gardens, Iowa Falls. Rev. Floyd Davis
will officiate. Visitation will be on Friday, September 13, at
the Surls
Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, from 3-8:00 p.m., with the
family present from 6-8:00 p.m.
Bertha was born on October 20, 1909 at Elk Point, South Dakota, to John and
Kathleen Cusick DeBuhr. She graduated from the Elk Point High School in
1929. On January 29, 1934, she married Roland Bates in Nebraska. She
was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Iowa
Falls.
She is survived by a daughter, Gail Bates-Baldwin of Colorado
Springs, Colorado; two grandsons, Rick Baldwin of Haleiwa, Hawaii and
James Baldwin of Encinata, California; two great-grandsons, Curtiss
Baldwin and Conor Baldwin, both of Haleiwa.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Roland; a brother, John BeBuhr;
and a sister, Gladys Olson.
Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church in Iowa
Falls.

Lola Wilson

Lola C. M. Wilson, 82, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday,
September 9, 2002, at the Rolling Green Nursing Home in
Nevada.
Services will be held on
Thursday, September 12, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in Buckeye, with burial in the Buckeye
Cemetery. Rev. Jay Jaeger will officiate. Visitation will be
on Wednesday, from 6-8:00 p.m., at the Surls
Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with the family present at this time.
Lola was born on January 23, 1920 on the family farm at Alden, to Carl and
Mamie Bessman Vierkandt. She graduated from the Buckeye High School in
1937 and on November 29, 1939, she married Garold Wilson at Buckeye.
They farmed and lived all their life in the Alden and Buckeye areas.
She worked for a time at the Buckeye Post Office. She was baptized
and confirmed at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Buckeye.
She is survived by two sons, Dennis and wife, Judy of Alden and
Robert and wife, Barbara of Altoona; two daughters, Betty Kuhlman and
husband, Eugene of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Patricia Olinger and husband,
Richard of Nevada; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Velma Peterson of Lemon Grove, California.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Garold; two brothers, George and
Fred Vierkandt; and an infant sister, Caroline.

Lester Ritland

Lester Lee Ritland, 89, of Radcliffe, died on Thursday, September 12,
2002.
Services were held on Monday, September 16, at
the Our Savior's Lutheran
Church in Radcliffe, with burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery. Rev.
Daniel Hart officiated.
Lester was born on April 7, 1913, to Olaus and Osa Lee Ritland on the
family farm near Garden City. He graduated from the McCallsburg High
School in 1930 and started farming in the Garden City area. On April
20, 1941, he married Romaine Gaard. He maintained a lifelong
interest in sporting activities and was well known for his baseball
exploits. He was an active member of the community serving on
various boards and committees in school, church and community.
He is survived by his wife; four children, Lois Frette, and husband,
Wendell of Jewell and family, Nancy Carter and husband, Hugh of Britt
and family; Curtis Ritland and wife, Linda of Tempe, Arizona and
family; and Donald Ritland and wife, Debbie of Radcliffe and family;
a sister, Genevieve Fleming of Story City; and Francois Schulze, a
foreign exchange son from Switzerland.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; a son, Leslie; four brothers; four sisters; and one
great-granddaughter, Valerie.
The

Robert Kriens

Robert Lee Kriens Sr., 64, of Hampton, died on Friday, September
13, 2002, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon.
Services will be
held on Wednesday, September 18, at 11:00 a.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral
Home in Hampton, with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Rev. Paul Avery
will officiate.
Robert was born on June 5, 1938 at Dumont, to Jasper and Allie Folkerds
Kriens. He attended the Dumont Schools and on June 1, 1961, he married
Linda Endriss at Toledo. He was employed by Berry Manufacturing.
Robert enjoyed fishing and needle pointing.
He is survived by a two daughters, Teresa Kriens of Hampton and
Brenda Baysinger and husband, Tony of Leon; two sons, Robert Jr. and
wife, Amy of Hampton and Virgil and wife, Nikki of Sheffield; two
brothers, Jasper Kriens Jr. of Tama and Harm Kriens of San Jose,
California; four sisters, Ollie Collins of Dumont, Marjorie Hemmes of
Hampton, Mary Ann Burkett and Shirley Evans, both of Dumont; 10
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; his wife; five brothers; and three sisters.

Robert Halsey

Robert Lyle Halsey, 78, of Hubbard, died on Friday,
September 13, 2002, at the Hubbard Care Center.
Graveside services for the cremains of both Robert and his wife, Wilda, will be
on Friday, September
20, at 1:00 p.m., in the Hubbard Cemetery in Hubbard. Pastor Matthew Rueger will officiate.
Robert was born on February 2, 1924 in Newton, to Audrey and Letha Bower
Halsey. He graduated from the Eldon High School and joined the United
States Marines in 1943, serving in World War II. On August 27, 1946,
he married Wilda Jones in Eldon. He lived in Waterloo, Webster City
and Fort Dodge before moving to Hubbard in 1964 and became part
owner of the Super Valu Store with his father and brother.
While in
Fort Dodge and Hubbard he was active in several civic organizations
including Toastmasters and Lions' Club where he held various
leadership positions. He was active in community and school events.
In 1969, Robert, Wilda and their daughter, Janet, moved to Loveland,
Colorado. After 15 years Robert and Wilda moved back to Hubbard. His
hobbies were camping, traveling, reading, cooking and golfing.
He is survived by three daughters, Linda Henningsen and husband,
Denny of Clear Lake, Barbara Duncan and husband, Verl of Hubbard and
Janet Kolb and husband, Les of Fountain, Colorado; four grandchildren;
one foster granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; a brother,
Raymond Halsey and wife, Connie of Des Moines; two brothers-in-law,
Jim Jones and wife, Madge of Eldon and Stan Podlenski of Littleton,
Massachusetts; two sisters-in-law, Sara Rogers of Eldon and Pat Jones of
Chico, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Wilda in February 2002.

Mildred Craig, 84, of
Hampton, died on Friday, September 13, 2002, at the Good
Sheppard Health Center in Mason City.
Services were held on
Tuesday, September 17, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton, with burial in the Maynes Grove Cemetery, rural Bradford. Rev. Bill
Poland officiated.
Mildred was born on September 22, 1917 in rural Butler County, to Harm and Barendina Kole Faber. She attended
the Iowa Falls High School and on
January 16, 1939, she married Harold "Shrimp" Craig in Hampton. She was
a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church. Her hobbies were
baking, bead jewelry and gardening.
She is survived by two sons, Gerald and wife, Jo of Dumont and Kent
and wife, Dianna of Tucson, Arizona; two daughters, Carol Ades and
husband, Art of Mason City and Janet Endriss and husband, Tom of
Evansdale; a brother, Dale Faber of Iowa Falls; three sisters,
Elizabeth Baseler of Waterloo, Irene Parr of Tucson, Arizona and
Norma Harrison of Vancouver, Washington; 11 grandchildren and 23
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; three brothers, Glen, Merle and Dick; a sister, Miriam; and
a granddaughter, Sheryl.

Mary Jane Holt

Mary Jane Holt, 69, of Eagle Grove, died on Saturday,
September 14, 2002, at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort
Dodge.
Graveside services will be
held on Wednesday, September 18, at 3:00 p.m., in the
Graceland Cemetery, followed by a 3:30 p.m. memorial service
at the Trinity Lutheran Church, both in Webster City. Rev.
John Grebner
will officiate. Visitation will be two hours before the services at the
Foster Funeral Home in Webster City.
Mary Jane was born on June 26, 1933 at Williams, to Frank and Evelyn
Hart Merz. She worked at Newberry's and Woolworth's prior to
attending AIB in Des Moines. She also worked at the Hamilton County
Hospital. She married Edward Holt at Webster City on June 22, 1956.
The couple lived in Webster City and she worked at the Southland Care
Center in Webster City, Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls and
provided home health care. She had resided in Webster City, Alden,
Iowa Falls and Eagle Grove. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Webster City.
She is survived by four sons, Byron Holt and wife, Jackie, Frank
Holt John Holt and wife, Christina, all of Eagle Grove and Edward
Holt and wife, Diane of Raymond; a daughter, Susanna Wages and
husband, Rick of Webster City; three brothers, George Merz of Duncombe,
Frank Merz of Iowa Falls and John Merz of Fort Dodge; and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband in 1988; and three sisters, Darlene, Esther and Martha Merz.

Lynn M. F. Witte, 59, of Latimer, died on Sunday, September
15, 2002, at his home.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, September 18, at 10:30 a.m., at the First
Congregational Church of Christ in Hampton, with burial in
the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Marlys Ruth will officiate.
Lynn was born on March 24, 1943 at Hampton, to Martin and Frances Myers
Witte. He attended Franklin County Consolidated Schools. On December 31,
1966, he married Sheila Lee in Hampton. Lynn worked as a mechanic
for Seabee's. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of
Christ and enjoyed bowling and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila; two sons, Brian and
fiancée,
Jayne Morgan of Hampton and Bart and wife, Rebecca of Council Bluffs;
two daughters, Eslene Olsen and husband, Dan of Ramona, California and
Beth Frenchick and husband, Phillip of Latimer; a sister, Carol
Schroeder and husband, John of Klemme; a granddaughter, Megan Witte;
and step-granddaughter, Leanne Olsen.
He was preceded in death by
his parents.

Charlie Ray Jr.

Charlie
Jackson Ray Jr., 67, of Wellsburg, died of natural causes on
Wednesday, September 18, 2002, at the Sartori Memorial
Hospital in Cedar Falls.
Funeral services will be
held on Monday, September 23,
at 1:30 p.m., at the First Assembly of God Church in Eldora, with Pastor
Fred Rosenkrans officiating. Burial will follow in the Steamboat
Rock Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation is on Sunday, September
22, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.
Charlie was born on October 25, 1934 in rural Crab Orchard, Kentucky,
the son of
Charlie Jackson Sr. and Lizzie Ray. He worked as a truck driver in
Crab Orchard until moving to the Danville, Illinois area where he
farmed. On May 9, 1970, Charlie married Wilma Fite Hatchel in
Frankfort, Indiana. In 1974, he moved to Cedar Rapids working as a
private contractor. He began driving truck in 1988 and in 1992 moved
to Lost Nation where he assisted Rev. Eddie James and taught Sunday
School at the Crossroads of Life Church. In 2001, he moved to
Steamboat Rock. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the
Korean Conflict. During his younger years he enjoyed fishing and was
an accomplished bowler. He enjoyed playing guitar and witnessing to
his faith.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma; a son, Frank of Crab Orchard;
five daughters, Jackie Nolen, Susan Ellison, Sandy Benge, Sherry
House, all of Crab Orchard and Tina and her husband, Rick Roll of
Steamboat Rock; seven stepsons; four stepdaughters; four sisters;
many grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and brothers, James, Gene
and Homer Ray.

Gary Carlsen

Gary Lynn Carlsen, 52, of Hampton, died on Wednesday, September
18, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services
will be held on Saturday, September 21, at 10:00 a.m., at the St. Paul Lutheran
Church in Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Jon
Anderson will officiate.
Gary was born on November 30, 1949 at Hampton, to Albert and Ruth Lursen
Carlsen. He graduated from the Hampton High School and owned and
operated a garbage business for 15 years and worked at Seabee's in
the chrome plating division for 13 years. He was a member of St.
Paul Lutheran Church. Gary loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors include two daughters, Tallie Kehm of Mason City and
Brandy Franke of Dumont; and a son, Beau of Hampton; and six
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dorothy Silver

Dorothy Elaine Silver, 58, of Geneva, died of natural causes
on Thursday, September 19, 2002, at her home.
Funeral services will be
held on Monday, September 23, at 1:30 p.m., at the Geneva
United Methodist Church with burial in the Lindenwood Cemetery rural Geneva. Rev. Patti
Conner will officiate. Visitation will be on Sunday, September 22, from 1-5:00 p.m., at
the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
Dorothy was born on February 2, 1944 in Hampton, to Clyde and Alberta
Davisson Moore. She was raised in Hansell and graduated from the Hansell
Consolidated Schools. On January 30, 1966, she married Raymond Silver
in Hampton. She was a secretary for ABCM Corp.
She was a member of
the Geneva United Methodist Church. Dorothy was on the Geneva Town
Council and Community Betterment and was the Justice of the Peace.
She enjoyed mowing, being with kids, ball games, walking her dogs
and the out of doors.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond of Geneva; two sons, Lynn
and wife, Krista of Conrad and Kal and his wife, Jill of Iowa
Falls; three sisters, Bev and husband, Bob Silver of Hansell, Marcia
Holze of Hampton and Sherry and husband, Art Wagner of Hampton; a
brother, Daryl and wife, Nancy of Atlanta, Georgia; her mother, Alberta
of Hansell; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
father; her father-in-law; her mother-in-law; and a nephew.

Carroll Groen

Carroll Joseph Groen, 75, of Hubbard,
died on Thursday, September 19, 2002, at the Neeley Ray Hospice House in
Gilbert, Arizona.
Services will be held on Wednesday, September 25, at 10:30
a.m., at the Salem United Methodist Church in Hubbard. Rev. Ron Ridgway
will officiate. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion
Post No. 4 of Hubbard and a flyover will be held at noon.
Carroll was born on July 15, 1927 in Hubbard, to Fred and Louise Lehmeier Groen. He graduated from
the Hubbard High School and served in
the United States Marine Corps in World War II. He married Jean
Brenner in 1954. In 1983, the Groens moved to Clifton, Colorado, where
he ran a small orchard. Due to health problems, they retired to
Apache Junction, Arizona in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; two sons, Scott of Fort Collins,
Colorado and Curt of Cleveland, Texas; two daughters, Kim Dorn and
husband, Doug of Oskaloosa and Christy Groen of Westminster, Colorado;
two grandchildren, Adam and Kendra Dorn; and a sister, Bonnie Lachner of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; a sister, Doris Dickensen; and a brother, Arvene.

Helen Aldinger

Helen A. Aldinger, 82, of Marshalltown, formerly of
Ackley, died on Saturday, September 21, 2002, at the Marshalltown Medical
and Surgical Center.
Services will be held on Thursday, September 26, at 11:00
a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown, with
interment at 3:00 p.m., in the St. Peter's United Church of Christ Cemetery,
Geneva. Rev. Jerald Swanberg will officiate. Visitation will be on
Wednesday from 5-9:00 p.m., at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home in
Marshalltown, with the family present from 6-8:00 p.m. There will be
an Order of Eastern Star service at 5:30 p.m.
Helen Arlene was born on March 30, 1920 in Alden, to Fred and Ellen
Nelsen Lawton. She graduated from the Alden High School in 1937. She
was employed by the Popejoy School as a bus driver and worked many
years at the Junction Truck Stop on Highway 65/20. On August 26, 1960,
she married Ernest Aldinger at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
They farmed near Ackley until 1993 when they retired and moved to
Marshalltown.
She was active in the St. Peter's United Church of Christ
at Geneva and was a member of Circle Ruth and Tri-M's at the
Methodist Church in Marshalltown. Helen was a member of the Royal
Neighbors of America, Farm Bureau, MMSC Auxiliary, Iowa Falls Moose,
Order of the Eastern Star and White Shrine where she had served as
Worthy Matron. She had a passion for flowers, music and all living
things.
She is survived by a son, Jerry Ellingson and wife, Anita of
Marshalltown; two daughters, Jo Ellen (Ellingson) and husband, John Nankivell of Newton and Shonda Deranleau and husband, Robert of
Creston; five grandchildren; one step-grandchild; one
great-grandchild; a sister, Irene Klein of Iowa Falls; and a
brother, Harold "Bud" Lawton and wife, Shirley of Fairfield Bay,
Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest in
1998 and husband, Alvin Ellingson in 1951.

Marilyn Feeney

Marilyn Feeney, 65, of Boone, died at her home on Sunday,
September 22, 2002.
A Funeral Mass will be
held on Wednesday, September 25, at 2:00 p.m., at the Church
of Sacred Heart in Boone, with burial in the church
cemetery. Rev. Clem Currans will officiate.
Marilyn was born on October 4, 1936 in Carroll, to Herman and Mary Dinges
Bengfort. She graduated from the St. Angela's Academy in Carroll in 1955
and on October 12, 1957, she married Edward Feeney in Carroll. She was
a certified nurse's aide and for 21 years was employed at the
Evangelical Free Church Home in Boone.
She was a member of the Altar
Society and was a Eucharistic Minister of her church. She enjoyed
shopping and supporting her grandchildren in their sporting events.
She is survived by her husband, Ed of Boone; three sons, James Feeney
and wife, Julie of Iowa Falls, Larry Feeney of Des Moines and Joseph
Feeney and friend, Barb Lettow of Fraser; four daughters, Lori
Mattson and husband, Jeff, Lisa Sunstrom and husband, Ron and
Jennifer Moore and husband, Theron, all of Boone and Nicole Feeney of
Des Moines and friend, Chad Sorenson of Ogden; four brothers; four
sisters; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents.

Lloyd Laughery

Lloyd William Laughery, 90, of Eagle Grove, died on
Sunday, September 22, 2002, at his home.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, September 25, at 10:30 a.m., at the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Eagle Grove, with graveside services at 1:30 p.m. in the Northlawn Memorial Gardens at Iowa Falls.
Lloyd was born on April 4, 1912 in Sharp, Kansas, to William and Anna
Stuckey Laughery. He graduated from the Burlington High School in Kansas
in 1930 and received his bachelor's degree in business in 1934 from
Baker University in Kansas. He moved to Des Moines and worked for
two years before moving to Iowa Falls where he was manager of the Iowa
Falls poultry and egg plant. He served in the U.S. Army until the
end of W.W. II. In 1944, he married Maxine Watkins in Halls Summit,
Kansas and moved his family to Eagle Grove in 1962. After the death
of his wife in 1965, he married Deloris Lichtenberg in 1968. He
joined Umthun Trucking Co. as comptroller in 1970 and worked there
until semi-retiring in 1978. He continued in an advisory capacity
for several years.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, was
active in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lions Club and a member
of Concerned, Inc. for 17 years.
He is survived by his wife, Deloris of Eagle Grove; a son, Leon
and wife, Patsy of Thornton, Colorado; two daughters, Diana Toillion and
husband, John of Mililani, Hawaii and Jean Yeager and husband, Doug of
Forest City; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two
sisters, Lorene Laughery of Topeka, Kansas and Latha Traue of Idaho
Falls, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first
wife; and two sisters.

Allan Slater
March 28, 1923-September 26, 2002

Allan L. Slater, 79, of Eldora, died on Thursday, September
26, 2002, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Services were held on
Monday, September 30, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Eldora, with burial in the Eastlawn Memory Garden Cemetery, Eldora. Pastor David Splett
officiated.
Allan was born on March 28, 1923 in Bovey, Minnesota, to John and Sarah
Bauer Slater. The family moved to Norman, Nebraska and he graduated
from the Norman High School. He served from 1943-45 in the Seabees
in the U. S. Navy during World War II. On November 4, 1945, he married
Dorothy Uden in Juniata, Nebraska. They later moved to Eldora, where he
was employed for 25 years by Dayco in the Quality Control Plant.
He
was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, actively volunteered at
Dorothy's Senior Center and a member of the American Legion Post No.
182 and VFW Roll-Harless Post No. 3974, in Eldora. Gardening was his
hobby and he enjoyed giving fresh produce to others.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Eldora; two daughters, Sherry
Crowley and husband, Bill of Waterloo and Mary vonKaufmann and
husband, Ernest of Midlothian, Virginia; two sons, Douglas Slater and wife,
Donna of Freeport, Illinois and Randall Slater and wife, Joyce of
Ellicott City, Maryland; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
two brothers; and a sister.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
three brothers; and two sisters.

Glenda Waggoner
February 19, 1913-September 26, 2002

Glenda M. Waggoner, 89, of Metamora, Illinois and formerly
of Popejoy, died on Thursday, September 26, 2002, at the Saint Francis
Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.
Services were held on Monday, September 30,
at the Tremont Methodist Church in Tremont, with private burial in
the
Oak Hill Cemetery at Popejoy. There was a small reception for the
family at the Popejoy Methodist Church after the services.
Glenda was born on February 19, 1913 in Walnut, to Charles and Alma McFate
McElvania. After teaching school near Grinnell for one year she came
to Popejoy and taught all grades in a one room school just outside
of Popejoy. Here she met her husband, Nathaniel Waggoner formerly of
Iowa Falls and they were married on February 4, 1939, at Mason City. After
he graduated from the Iowa State Veterinary School at Ames, they made
their home in Olin until 1965 when they moved to Illinois.
She is survived by her husband; three sons, Gary and wife, Wanda of
Boulder, Colorado, Curtis and wife, Kaye of Rock Falls, Illinois and Dennis
and wife, Terri of Germantown, Illinois; and seven grandchildren.

Janet Pomeroy
November 1, 1960-September 28, 2002

Janet Pomeroy, 41, of Lake Elmo, Minnesota, died at her home
on Saturday, September 28, 2002.
A Memorial Mass was held
on Wednesday, October 2, at the St. Stanislaus Catholic
Church in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Memorials may be sent to the family and will be donated to the
American Cancer Society.
Janet was born on November 1, 1960, to Robert and Darlene Roozen
in Waterloo and attended the Iowa Falls High School, graduating in
1979. She married Brian Pomeroy and they lived in Lake Elmo, Minnesota.
She is survived by her husband, Brian; her parents, Robert and
Darlene Roozen of Iowa Falls; three sisters, Kathy Sabota, and
husband, Ken and their sons, Bobby and Jesse, Judy Roozen and son,
Miles and Robert Roozen and son, Zachary; and many other relatives
and friends.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Jane; and a
brother, Joseph.

Henry Spurlock
January 17, 1948-September 29, 2002

Henry Spurlock Jr. "Buffalo", 54, of Eldora, formerly of
Houston, Texas, died on Sunday, September 29, 2002, at his
home while under the care of the Hospice of North Iowa.
Following cremation,
memorial services will be held on Wednesday, October 9, at
the Creps-Abels Funeral Home
in Eldora, with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial of his
cremated remains will be held at a later date in the Veteran's
Memorial Cemetery in Houston.
Henry was born on January 17, 1948 in Houston, to Henry Sr. and Helen
Smith Spurlock. He was raised in Texas and served in the United
States Army in Vietnam in the late 1960s. In 1988, he moved to
Phoenix, Arizona, where he married Angela Boyles. They moved to
central Iowa in 1990, living in the communities of Hubbard,
Marshalltown and Alden, returning to Texas in 1996. He moved back to
Eldora in August 2002. He worked as a truck driver and mechanic. His
hobbies were riding and raising horses, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Angela; two daughters, Rachel of Eldora
and Cecelia Browder of College Station, Texas; four sons, Henry III
of Ackley, Joshua, Clifford and Caleb, all of Eldora; a stepdaughter,
Adrienne Reed of Pensacola, Florida; his mother, Helen Stanford; two
sisters, JoAnn Bishop and Francis Patterson; and eight
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; infant son,
Joseph; stepfather, Charles Stanford; and a brother, Clifford.

Maxine Ayers

Maxine Ayers, 95, of Aredale, died on Sunday, September 29, 2002,
at the Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.
Funeral services were
held at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont, with burial in
the Oak
Hill Cemetery, Bristow.
Maxine was born on June 20, 1907 in Butler County, to Henry and Ruth Rubyor Dye. She attended
the Dumont High School and the University of
Northern Iowa. On September 21, 1926, she married Paul Ayers in Butler
County. She was a teacher and a homemaker and a member of the Aredale
Gospel Hall.
Maxine enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading her Bible
and spending time with grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Swieter and husband, LaVerne
of Geneva and Sharon Folken and husband, Wayne of Waterloo; two sons,
Robert and wife, Darlene of Dumont and Kenneth and wife, Sheryl of
Bristow; a daughter-in-law, Inez Ayers of Aplington; 16
grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and nine
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
her husband; a son, Marvin; a grandson; a brother; and a sister.

Marjorie Mann

Marjorie Mann, 97, of Robertson, Iowa, died on Monday,
September 30, 2002, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa
Falls.
Services will be held on
Friday, October 4, at 10:30 a.m., at the Church of the Open
Bible with burial in the Northlawn Memory Gardens, both in Iowa Falls. Rev.
Herb Kenyon will officiate. There will be no visitation.
Marjorie Kelly, was born on April 16, 1905 at Iowa Falls, to John
S. and Clara (Stonebraker) Kelly. She attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools and on
November 20, 1933, she married Elmer Theodore Mann at Mason City. She was a
member of the Open Bible Church in Iowa Falls and the ladies circle.
She is survived by two daughters, Audrey Parks and husband, Larry of
Meridian, Idaho and Donna Bartlett and husband, Max of Iowa Falls;
ten grandchildren; thirty five great-grandchildren; and ten
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
her husband, Elmer; two sons, James Rotzler and Neil Mann; and two
brothers, Charles and John Kelly.

Arlene Homan

M. Arlene Homan, 78, of Ackley, died on Monday, September
30, 2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services were held on
Friday, October 4, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. Father Jim
Miller officiated.
Martha Arlene Bonk, as born on September 28, 1924 in Etna Township,
Hardin County, to Arend and Engelena Abbas Bonk. She attended
the Robertson School and on January 23, 1945, she married Donald Homan.
They lived and farmed just south of Ackley. She volunteered her time
working on fund raising events for the Ackley Heritage Center, the
RAP Thrift Store and St. Mary's Catholic Church of which she was a
member. Her hobbies were camping, crocheting, crafts and dancing.
She is survived by a son, Craig and wife, Charleen of Kieler, Wisconsin;
a daughter, Joan Gallagher and husband, J. Patrick of Salem, Oregon;
and
four granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband in 1987; and a sister, Elnora Windecker.

Mary Potgeter

Mary Potgeter, 69, of Eldora, died on Monday, September 30, 2002,
at the University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Services were
held on Thursday, October 3, at the First Congregational United Church of
Christ in Eldora, with burial in the Eldora City Cemetery. Pastor
Corey Larson officiated.
Mary was born on August 6, 1933 in Eldora, to Theodore and Leon Frank Swasand. She lived her entire life in Eldora, graduating from
the Eldora
High School in 1951 and attending St. Olaf College in Northfield,
Minnesota. On July 31, 1953, she married Edwin Potgeter at the First
Congregational Church of Christ in Eldora. She was a member of the
Congregational Church and the Pine Lake Country Club.
She is survived by her husband, Ed; two grandsons, Brian Mott of
West Des Moines and Brent Mott of Clive; a son-in-law, Lloyd Mott of
Clive; and a stepsister, Joanne Nightingale of Carmichael, California.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; and her daughter, Renee Mott.
