Marcella M. "Sally" Berg, 81, of Hampton, died on Tuesday,
October 1, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in
Hampton.
Services were held on
Friday, October 4, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Jerry
Miller officiated.
Marcella was born on September 28, 1921 at Ackley, to Samuel and Mayme
Caster Fischer. She graduated from the Ackley High School and on August
20, 1951, she married Sylven "Skip" Berg at Fergus Falls, Minnesota. She
worked for 20 years as cook at the Franklin General Hospital and had
worked at Maytag. She enjoyed crocheting, bead work, fishing and
going to auctions.
She is survived by her husband, Sylven; a daughter, Raela Burns of
Tucson, Arizona; two sisters, Bernita Patterson of Warren, Michigan and
Leona Ellinson of Gladstone, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; and a sister, Beulah Miller.

Carl Fowler

Carl E. Fowler Jr., 45, of Eldora, died on Tuesday, October
1, 2002, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Services were held on
Friday, October 4, at the First Congregational Church of
Christ in Eldora, with Pastor Corey Larson officiating and
Father Jim Dubert
assisting. He will be cremated after the service with private family
burial in the Eldora City Cemetery on Monday, October 7. Military
honors will be provided by the Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 and the
American Legion and Roll-Harless No. 3974 of the VFW of Eldora.
Carl was born December 25, 1956 in Lebanon, New Hampshire, to Carl Sr. and Dora
Paquette Fowler, moving to San Pedro, California, as a child. He served
in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam and after his discharge
served in the National Guard in California. In 1992, he moved to
Grundy Center and then to Eldora in 1996. On October 29, 1999, he
married Donna Sternhagen in Eldora. He worked as a certified nurses
aid for the Grundy Center Care Center, the Eldora Nursing and Rehab
and Valley View Nursing Center in Eldora.
He was a member of the Walter-Sayer
Post No. 182 of the American Legion. His hobbies were fishing,
camping, walking the Iowa River and watching boxing on TV.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; his father and stepmother, Carl
Sr. and Betty Fowler of Paramount, California; a stepdaughter, Angie Heishman of Eldora; a sister, Donna Seehusen and husband, Randy of
Holland; three brothers, Steve Paquette of Reinbeck, Jerry Fowler of
Aplington and David Fowler of Eldora; and several nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
The
Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora, was in charge of

Irene Evans

Irene Evans, 66, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, died at her home
on Friday, October 4, 2002.
Services were held on
Monday, October 7, in Bella Vista.
She was born on April 1,
1936, to Vincent and Bessie Tyson Harty in Mason City. On August 29, 1954,
she married Melvin Evans at the Little Brown Church at Nashua.
They lived in Iowa Falls until moving to Bella Vista six years
ago.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin of Bella Vista; three
sons, Randy of Des Moines, Ron of Iowa Falls and Jim of Bella
Vista; three daughters, Kimberly of Rancho Palos Verdes, California,
Barbara of Seal Beach, California and Linda of Sheboygan, Wisconsin;
nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers; and five
sisters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother;
and one sister.
Memorials may be directed to her husband, Melvin Evans, Bella Vista, Arkansas. They will be given to
the St. Mary's
Hospice at Rogers, Arkansas.

Douglas Grau

Douglas B. Grau, 75, of Dumont, died on Saturday, October 5, 2002,
at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.
Services were held on
Tuesday, October 8, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with
burial at a later date. Rev. Don Liming officiated.
Douglas was born on April 1, 1927 in Cedar Falls, to George and Esther Grau and graduated from
the Cedar Falls High School. He served in the
United States Navy during World War II. On February 12, 1949, he married
Dorothy Plummer in Cedar Falls. Douglas worked for John Deere,
operated heavy equipment in construction and owned the Horse Shoe
Bar in Dumont for 15 years.
He was a member of the Assembly of God
Church in Hampton and belonged to the Dumont American Legion.
Douglas enjoyed hunting and fishing, yard work and football.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Dumont; two daughters, Donita Cahill and husband, Mike of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Susan Schleidt and husband, Mike of Atlanta, Georgia; a son, Tom Grau and wife,
Sandy of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one
grandchild.

Raymond Armfield

Raymond Armfield, 88, of Hampton, died on Sunday, October 6,
2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services are on
Wednesday, October 9, at 1:30 p.m., at the First Congregational United
Church of Christ in Hampton. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Rev. Marlys Ruth will officiate.
Raymond was born on August 28, 1914 at Aredale, to George and Mary
Sheppard Armfield. He was educated in Franklin County schools. On
August 21, 1934, he married Lena Kroll in Hampton. Raymond was a
farmer and retired in 1978. He was a member of the First
Congregational United Church of Christ and enjoyed camping, fishing,
playing cards and spending time with family.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Donna and husband, Maurice
Wolf of Hampton; a son, Ronald and wife, Sally of Victoria, Texas;
two brothers, Kenneth of Latimer and Russell of Clear Lake; four
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded by his parents; a daughter,
Patricia; and a brother, Donald.
The

Steno Eilderts

Steno T. Eilderts, 86, of Aplington, died on Sunday, October 6, 2002,
at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Services were held on Tuesday,
October 8, at the First Reformed Church in Aplington, with burial in
the
Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington. Rev. Harlan DeJong officiated.
Steno was born on November 20, 1915 near Kesley, to Gerrit and Harmka
Russman Eilderts. He attended a rural school and was an Army veteran
of World War II. He received the Purple Heart for being wounded in
France. On February 28, 1947, he married Helena Schipper at her parents'
home in rural Kesley. He was a rural mail carrier for 26 years and
retired in 1971.
Steno was a member of the First Reformed Church
where he served as elder, deacon and treasurer and taught Sunday
School. He was a member of the Rural Mail Carriers Association,
Lions Club and enjoyed fishing and camping.
He is survived by his wife, Helena; three daughters, Joan Nulton of
Arlington Heights, Illinois, Judy Sagendorf of McHenry, Illinois and Janet Pesicka of Marengo, Illinois; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild;
and four sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one
grandson; three brothers; and three sisters.
The
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Aplington, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Bernice Dreyer

Bernice Dreyer, 88, of Hampton, died on Sunday, October 6,
2002, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.
Services will be held on
Friday, October 11, at 10:30 a.m., at the First
Congregational Church of Christ in Hampton, with burial in
the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Marlys Ruth will officiate.
Visitation will be on Thursday, October 10, from 4-7:00
p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
Bernice was born on January 28, 1914 at Hampton, to Ed and Martha Meyer Passehl. She attended Latimer
Schools and on December 28, 1932, married
Clarence Dryer in Latimer. She was a member of the First
Congregational Church of Christ in Hampton. She was a homemaker and
enjoyed bowling, fishing and crafts.
She is survived by two sons, Wayne and wife, Barb of Cedar Rapids
and Dean and wife, Sherrie of Cedar Falls; a brother, Armin Passehl
of Latimer; a sister, Erma Yakel of Sun City Center, Florida; four
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Howard.

Stanley N. Chesmore

Stanley N. Chesmore, 91, of Webster City, Iowa and formerly of
Alden, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2002, at the Southfield Wellness
Community, Webster City. Stanley donated his body to the
University of Osteopathic Medicine, Des Moines, Iowa.
Funeral services will be
held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday,
October 11, at the Immanuel Memorial United Church of
Christ, Alden, with inurnment at a later date in Mountain,
Wisconsin. Memorials may be directed to the family c/o his wife,
Barbara Chesmore, Webster
City, Iowa. The body donation and funeral services were
entrusted to the Linns's Funeral Homes,
Alden, Chapel.
Stanley N. Chesmore, was born on December 29, 1910 at Walker, Iowa,
the son of Leo Clyde and Lois Ware (Hunter) Chesmore.
On December 31, 1966, he was united in marriage to Barbara J.
Kelly at Menommonee, Michigan. He had previously been married to
Leona Huster and Rosemary Reed, who preceded him in death.
He was employed as a welder with the Weaver Construction Co., Alden,
for 37 years and had been a self employed welder finally
retiring in 1995. He had worked on farms as a young man and
drove truck for Keeshin Trucking.
He was a member of the Immanuel Memorial United Church of
Christ, Alden.
Stanley is survived by his wife, Barbara Chesmore of Webster City; three sons, David Chesmore of Derby, Kansas, Charles Chesmore
and Wesley Chesmore of
Lincoln, Nebraska; four daughters, Nola Ruiz of Cedar Rapids,
Edna Embry of Vinton, Christina Chesmore of Muscatine and Donna Enriquez of Muscatine; eighteen
grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Clarissa Clemons of Gaastra,
Michigan and Velma Wagner of Thompson, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Lois Chesmore;
two wives, Leona Chesmore and Rosemary Chesmore; one sister, Nola
Clover; and nine step-sisters and brothers.

Ruth A. Meyer

Ruth A. Meyer, 81, of Hampton, died on Tuesday, October 8,
2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Services will be held on
Thursday, October 10, at the Immanuel United Church of
Christ in Latimer, with burial in the Hillside Cemetery,
Sheffield. Rev. Jeff Long will officiate. Visitation will be
on Wednesday from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral
Home in Hampton.
Ruth was born on December 13, 1920 at Belmond, to Frank and Louise Heginger
Kemp. She attended Belmond schools and on October 4, 1941, married
Victor Meyer in Belmond. She was a homemaker and attended the Immanuel
United Church of Christ in Latimer. She enjoyed needlework and
cooking.
She is survived by her husband, Victor of Hampton; a son, Terry
and wife, Pamela of Thornton; a brother, Art Kemp of Colome, South Dakota; a
sister, Esther Malzer of Nebraska City, Nebraska; three grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; and one brother, Elmer.

Richard Alvestad

Richard O. Alvestad, 82, of Ames, formerly of Blairsburg,
died on Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames
of complications suffered in a fall.
Memorial services were held
on
Tuesday, October 15, at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, where
he had been a member. Burial of the cremains will be in the Liberty
Township Cemetery in Blairsburg.
Richard had lived all of his life in Blairsburg before moving to
Ames in January. He was a retired farmer and an Army Air Force
veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the
Webster City American Legion and the Lions Club in Blairsburg.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; and a brother, LeVerne of
Williams.
The
Adams Funeral Home of Ames, was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Crabtree

Donald Crabtree, 66, of Hubbard, passed away on Friday, October 11,
2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.
Memorial services will be
held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, October 15, at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls. A
time of fellowship with friends will follow the memorial
services. He was cremated and his ashes will be scattered at
a later date. The Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel is
in charge of the arrangements.
Donald Eugene Crabtree, was born on August 17, 1936, at his parents
farm in Sherman Township, Hardin County, Iowa, the son of John
Burton and Ruth (Thompson) Crabtree.
He attended the Sherman Township # 1 Country School. He attended
high school in California and graduated from the Radcliffe High School with the class of 1954.
In 1955, he was united in marriage to LuWanda Sue Boen and they
were later divorced. On November 11, 1976, he was united in
marriage to Elizabeth Ann Neubauer at the First United Methodist
Church, Iowa Falls.
Donald was a farmer on the family homestead in Sherman Township,
rural Hubbard, Iowa. He had also driven truck for Mathre
Trucking, Story City, Iowa. He was a member of the Cottage
Community Church, rural Iowa Falls. He had served in the Iowa
Army National Guard and was a member of the Iowa Falls Loyal
Order of the Moose Lodge #1331.
He loved his children and grandchildren and spending time with
all his family on the farm.
Donald Crabtree is survived by his wife, Elizabeth
"Beth" Ann
Crabtree of Hubbard; two daughters, Vicky Thomas and
husband, Jim of Etiwanda, California and Karla Brown of Steamboat
Rock; two sons, Tom Crabtree and wife, Deb of Queen City,
Texas and Randy Crabtree of Iowa Falls; two step-daughters,
Natalie Schumacher and husband, Craig and Cindy Stuve
and husband, John, both of Ames; two step-sons, Barry Neubauer
and wife, Carol of Iowa Falls and Scott Neubauer and wife,
Angela of Davenport; twenty one grandchildren; and two
sisters, Kathryn Rankin and husband, Jim of Iowa Falls and
Marjory Gillespie and husband, Howard of Iowa Falls; and
one brother, Glen Crabtree and wife, Lois of Aredale.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Burton Crabtree
and Ruth Thompson Crabtree Crow; and two brothers, Forest
Crabtree and Ted Crabtree.

ELDORA-Colton Lee Gillmore, infant son of Nathan and Michalee
Bradley Gillmore of Eldora, died on Saturday, October 12, 2002, at
the
Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born on October 12, 2002, in Des Moines. Private family
services were held with burial at Friends Cemetery in Iowa
Falls. Rev. Don Preston officiated.
Colton is survived by his parents; a brother, Skyler of Eldora;
grandparents, Douglas and Cindy Gillmore of Iowa Falls and Leo
and Sherry Bradley of Armstrong; great-grandparents, Jerry and
Mary Smith of Iowa Falls; two great-grandfathers, Dennis Ward of
Iowa Falls and Alvin Gillmore of Union Grove, Wisconsin; and
great-grandmother, Arlene Gustin of Grand Junction.
He was
preceded in death by his grandfather, Timothy Bradley; and a
great-grandfather, Kenneth Gustin.
The

Virginia Phillips

Virginia "Ginger" Phillips, 46, of Ackley, died on Saturday,
October 12, 2002, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in
Waterloo.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, October 16, at 1:00 p.m., at the Sietsema Funeral
Home in Ackley, with burial at a later date. Rev. Bill
Carpenter will officiate.
Ginger was born on March 12, 1956 in Cedar Rapids, to Bill and Ann Whitters Hoyland. She attended elementary school in Cedar
Rapids. On August 13, 1982, she married David Phillips in
Waterloo. She was a volunteer at the AGWSR and the Dysart
Elementary Schools. She was a member of the Our Savior's Lutheran
Church in Ackley and the women's organization at the church.
She is survived by her husband, Dave; two daughters, Patience
Kea of Des Moines and April Phillips of Iowa Falls; two sons,
Jed Kea of Cedar Rapids and Jason Phillips of Waterloo; her
father, Bill Hoyland of Richland Center, Wisconsin; and six
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother; and a
brother, Bill Hoyland.

Icil Rae Welsch

Icil Rae Welsch, 89, of Eddyville, formerly of
Williams, died on Sunday, October 13, 2002, at the Ottumwa Regional Health
Center.
Services will be held on Wednesday, October 16, at the United
Methodist Church in Eddyville, with burial in the Bear Creek
Cemetery, rural Brandon.
Icil Rae was born on December 27, 1912 near Urbana, in Polk Township, to
Fay and Maude Haymaker Pardun. She graduated from Iowa State
Teachers College and became librarian at Williams. On May 13,
1934, she married Clyde Welsch in Williams and they made their
home at Williams. She was librarian at the Williams Library for
25 years. Ten years ago she moved to Eddyville to be near her
sons. She was a member of the Williams Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald and wife, Diane of Eddyville
and Wray and wife, Merry of Winfield; four grandchildren; a
brother, Glenn Pardun of Homosassa, Florida; and two sisters,
Venice Fish of Shellsburg and Myrle Pronk of Garner.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1978; one
brother; and three sisters.

Leota Imlay

Leota Fern Imlay, 82, of Hubbard, died on Monday, October 14,
2002, at the Hubbard Care Center.
Services will be held on
Thursday, October 17, at 10:30 a.m., at the Salem United Methodist
Church, Hubbard, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, Jewell. Rev.
Ron Ridgway will officiate.
Leota was born on May 11, 1920 at Williams, to Albert and Iva
Elliott Harrah. She lived in Williams and Iowa Falls and
finished the 10th grade and later in Jewell she obtained her GED.
On July 25, 1936, she married Harry Imlay at Webster City. They
moved to Jewell where they lived the rest of their married life.
She was a member of the Federated Church in Jewell and later
Salem Methodist Church in Hubbard. Leota taught Sunday School,
worked with the women's group and the quilting group. She moved
into the Hubbard Care Center in December 2000.
She is survived by a son, Harry and wife, Lois of Eagle Grove;
two daughters, Harriett Howard and husband, Frank of Portland,
Oregon and Joyce Frazier and husband, Luke of Sopchoppy, Florida; 11
grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Harrah
and wife, Velma of Houston, Missouri; a sister, Juanita of Sonoma,
California; and a sister-in-law, Byrdie Imlay of Jewell.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and 10 brothers
and sisters.

Joe Trittien

Joe E. Trittien, 93, of Steamboat Rock, died on
Friday, October 18, 2002, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Eldora.
Services were held on Monday, October 21, at the First Presbyterian
Church in Steamboat Rock, with burial in the Steamboat Rock
Cemetery. Pastor Bruce Baillie officiated.
Joe was born on June 5, 1909 in Steamboat Rock, to August and
Hattie Bunger Trittien. He attended country school at Steamboat
Rock and on January 10, 1942, he married Grace Hoffman in Steamboat
Rock. Joe was inducted into the United States Army in 1941 and
served in the Philippines until 1945. He worked for the
Steamboat Rock Elevator for a short time and then ran the feed
mill at Farm Service in Eldora until retiring in 1971. He
attended the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock.
He is survived by a son, Jerry Trittien of Eldora; a daughter,
Jane Rotgers and husband, Rod of Iowa Falls ; one granddaughter,
Joanna Rotgers of New York City; two sisters, Anna Elzig of
Clarissa, Minnesota and Helen Shafer of Eldora; two sisters-in-law,
Norma Hoffman of Sun City, Arizona and Frances Hoffman of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1982; and
two brothers, Dick and Hank Trittien.

Earla Mae Morehouse

Earla Mae Morehouse, 89, of Dumont, died on Saturday, October 19,
2002,
at the Dumont Care Center.
Services were held on Tuesday, October 22, at
the New Hope Methodist Church in Dumont, with burial in the Dumont
Cemetery.
Earla Mae was born on November 20, 1912 at Aredale, to Henry and Eveline
Hawver Jorges and attended the Aredale Public Schools. On September 7, 1935,
she married Percy Morehouse in Waverly. She was a homemaker and
enjoyed gardening. She was a member of the New Hope Methodist
Church, the UMW and several card clubs.
She is survived by her husband, Percy of Dumont; and a sister, Lola Mckee of Aredale.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four
sisters; and three brothers.

Robert Klousia

C. Robert "Bob" Klousia, 77, of Hampton, died on Saturday,
October 19, 2002, at the Franklin General Nursing Facility in Hampton.
Services will be held on Friday, October 25, at 10:30 a.m., at the Hampton
United Methodist Church, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev.
Jerry Miller will officiate. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 24,
from 4-8:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
Bob was born on May 30, 1925 at Hampton, to George and Bertha Crow Klousia. He graduated from
the Hampton High School and attended Iowa
State University. On June 8, 1947, he married Jean Rokel in Hampton
and after her death in 1988, he married Evelyn Brown on November 14,
1992 in Hampton. He was a farmer and a school bus driver for
the Hampton-Dumont Schools for 45 years. He was a member of the Hampton
Masonic Lodge, the River City Barber Shop Chorus, Franklin County
Chorale and the National Guard.
Robert was a member and active in
the Hampton Methodist Church and donated much of his time singing at
weddings and funerals. His passion for life was singing.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Hampton; a son, David and
wife, Susan of Mason City; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Klousia of
Mason City; a stepson, Kevin Anway and wife, Debra of Seattle,
Washington; two stepdaughters, Darla Monopoli and husband, Luke of Ayer,
Massachusetts and Christina Meide of Hampton; and 12 step-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jean; and a
brother, Harold.

Services were held on Tuesday, October 22, at
the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the
Alden Cemetery. Rev. Rhoda Preston officiated. Full military rites
were provided by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188 of Iowa
Falls.
Charles was born on August 28, 1930 in rural Alden, to Burl and Edna Giesler Barhite. He graduated from
the Alden High School in 1947 and had
been class president. He served in the United States Army and on
January 26, 1951, he married LaVonne King. He was a certified public
accountant. He was a member of the Hyman-Peavey American Legion
Post and the First United Methodist Church, both of Iowa Falls.
Charles enjoyed woodworking, gardening and playing cards.
He is survived by a son, Brian and wife, Tamara of Iowa Falls; two
grandchildren, James and Jason; and two great-grandchildren, April
and Veronica; a sister, Mary Jean Kinsinger of Iowa Falls; and a
special friend, Barbara Johns of Ackley.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; his wife; and a sister, JoAnn Rickerl.

James Smith

James Edward Smith, 76, of Iowa Falls, died on Sunday, October
20, 2002, at his home.
Services will be held on Wednesday,
October 23, at the Linn's Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with burial
in the Friends Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The family will receive
friends on Tuesday, October 22, from 6-8:00 p.m., at the funeral
home. Rev. Rhoda Preston will officiate.
James was born on July 3, 1926 at Lu Verne, to Lloyd and Anna Hansen
Smith. He graduated from the Lu Verne High School in 1944 and was
inducted into the U.S. Army in 1950, transferred to the reserves in
1952 and was discharged in 1957. On July 13, 1957, he married
Barbara Naylor in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jim spent most of his life driving
truck, many years as a driver for Umthun Trucking in Eagle Grove.
Before retiring he drove for Emerson Trucking of Iowa Falls. He was
a member of the Hampton A. A. Chapter.
He is survived by two daughters, Judith Livasy of Fremont, Nebraska and
Peggy Tjarks of Iowa Falls; six grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd (Jerry) Smith of Dakota City
; and a sister, Ellen "Maxine" Putz of Mountain Home, Arkansas.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Beverly Deibler,
Donna and Patty Smith; and three brothers, Robert, Richard and Larry
Smith.

Glenn Kolthoff

Glenn L. Kolthoff, 65, of Buckeye, died
on Sunday, October 20,
2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Memorial
services will be held on Thursday, October 24, at 1:00 p.m., at the Surls Funeral
Home in Iowa Falls, with visitation an hour prior to the services. Burial
will be in the Hazel Green Cemetery, rural Ackley. Rev. Bob Miller will
officiate.
Glenn was born on September 2, 1937 in Ackley, to Eltjo and Meta Kruase
Kolthoff and attended the Ackley Schools. He never married and worked as
a farmhand. Glenn enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in his
garden.
He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Wallace of Buckeye; a
brother, Robert of Webster City; and several nieces and nephews.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Laurence, John,
Raymond, Kenneth and Jerry Kolthoff.

Grace Bakker

Grace Bakker, 92, of Wellsburg, died on Monday, October 21,
2002, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital - Long Term
Care Unit.
Services will be held on Thursday, October 24, at
10:30 a.m., at the Christian Reformed Church, rural Wellsburg
with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on
Wednesday, October 23, from 4-8:00 p.m., with the family present
from 6-8:00 p.m. Pastor Matt Ooms will
officiate. Memorials may be directed to the Christian Reformed World
Relief Committee.
Grace was born on December 5, 1909, to John and Gertie Ruter Geerdes in
Grundy Center. She graduated from the Wellsburg High School and attended
Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her teaching
certificate. She taught rural school for two years and on January 30,
1936, married Gerald Bakker at the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed
Church Parsonage. They lived on a farm in rural Steamboat Rock for
many years. In 1972, they moved to Wellsburg, and Grace lived there
until 1996.
She was a lifelong member of the First Christian
Reformed Church, taught Sunday School, was a member of the church
guild and the Timothy Sisters.
She is survived by two daughters, Mardelle Werkman and husband, Dick
of Wellsburg and Joyce Dreams and husband, Larry of Eldora; two sons,
Glen Bakker and wife, Rachel of Steamboat Rock and Merle Bakker and
wife, Diane of Holland; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1976; four
brothers; and four sisters.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg, is in charge of

Beverly Schipper

Beverly Jean Schipper, 64, of Aplington, died of
cancer on Wednesday, October 23, 2002, at the Covenant Medical Center
in Waterloo.
Services were held on Monday, October 28, at the First
Reformed Church in Aplington, with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery at
Parkersburg. Rev. Harlan De Jong officiated.
Beverly was born on August 12, 1938 in Parkersburg, to Henry and Anna Ryks Berends. She graduated from
the Parkersburg High School in 1956
and on April 23, 1957, she married Richard Schipper in
Parkersburg. They lived one year at Austinville and then moved
to Kesley where they farmed for 43 years. In 2001, they moved
into Aplington.
She was an active member of the Kesley
Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible
School for many years. She recently joined First Reformed Church
at Aplington. She enjoyed bowling and was a member of several
leagues. Her hobbies were sewing, crafts, walking and playing
cards.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Randall Schipper and
wife, Anne of Ackley; two daughters, Rhonda Meester and husband,
Kenny of Parkersburg and Renae Schachterle and husband, John of
Ackley; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; six
sisters, Florence Harms of Ackley, Carrie Kruger and husband, Bernerd Sr. of Holland, Marjorie Rewerts and husband, Herman of
Parkersburg, Frances Schipper and husband, Alvin of Kesley, Dee
Christophel and husband, Rich of Aplington and Karen Karsjens and
husband, Bud of Aplington.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; a daughter, Robyn; one brother; and four sisters.
The Redman-Schwartz Funeral Homes of Aplington, was in charge of

Gladys Hollar

Gladys E. Hollar, 102, died on Friday, October 25, 2002,
at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Graveside services and
burial were held on Monday, October 28, at the Union Cemetery in Guthrie
Center.
Gladys was born to McLellan and Maggie Burris Scott on January 15,
1900 in Victory Township, in Guthrie County. She graduated from
the Guthrie Center Schools and lived in that area until moving to
Iowa Falls in 1989. Gladys was a lifelong member of the First
Christian Church and enjoyed bowling and playing cards when she
was younger. She was a faithful Iowa Hawkeye fan.
She is survived by a son, Leonard "Bud" Hollar and wife, Bev of
Iowa Falls; a sister, Laura Long of Lorain, Ohio; five
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, McLellan and Maggie Burris Scott; her husband, Carl;
and four sisters, Letha Scott, Chella McCabe, Josie Beer and
Jessie Huston.
The Linn's Funeral Home of Iowa Falls, was in charge of

Darrell J. Essen

Darrell J. Essen, 84, of Grundy Center, died from natural
causes on Saturday, October 26, 2002, at the Allen Memorial
Hospital in Waterloo.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, October
29, at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, with
Pastor Kent Leydens officiating. Burial followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery in
Grundy Center, with full military honors provided by the Grundy Center
American Legion Post No. 349 and AMVETS 17.
Darrell was born on September 1, 1918 in Marshalltown, to Claude and Bertha Specht Essen. He was raised in the Cresco area. On March 15, 1939,
he was united in marriage to Arlene Rose Bleeker at her mother's
house in Grundy Center. They moved to Grundy Center in the 1940s. He
was a veteran of WW II serving with the U.S. Army from 1944-1946,
stationed in the Philippine Islands during some of that period.
Darrell worked for John Deere in Waterloo and during the 1950s also
owned and operated Walters' Phillips 66 Station for seven years. He
retired from John Deere in 1979 with 32 years of service. He was a
member of Grundy Center American Legion Post No. 349. He enjoyed
spending time hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Arlene; daughters, Judy
Wilson and husband, Herb of Marshalltown and Janet Dixon and husband,
Don of Cedar Falls; a son, Darrell D. "Dean" and wife, Cheryl of
Waterloo; sister, Leona Stockdale of Waterloo; and nine
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a
brother, Kenneth; sisters, Wanda Dewey and infant sister, Ione ; and
great-granddaughter, Melisa Mathes.

Marie A. Caruth

Marie A. Caruth, 96, of Ankeny, formerly of Williams, died
on
Tuesday, October 29, 2002, at the Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny.
Services were held on Friday, November 2, at the United Methodist Church in
Alden, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Rev. Rick Layman
officiated.
Marie was born March 25, 1906 at Williams, to John and Barbara
Nickels Franklin. She attended the Vinton School for the Blind. On
August 13, 1938, she married Fred G. Caruth. She was a member of the
United Methodist Church at Williams and was a housewife. She enjoyed
reading her Braille Bible and stringing beads and she enjoyed
animals.
She is survived by two daughters, Stella Wepel and husband, Marion of
Ankeny and Peggy Hennigar and husband, Lloyd of Runnels; a son, John Caruth and wife, Phyllis of Duluth, Minnesota; five grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister,
Irene Cummings of Marshalltown.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband; three sisters; four brothers; and a grandson, Rollie Fisher.
The Surls Funeral Home of Alden, was in charge of

Wallace D. Fessler

Wallace D. Fessler, 76, of Cedar Falls, formerly of
Iowa Falls and Tucson, Arizona, died of natural causes on Wednesday, October
30, 2002, at his home.
Funeral services will be
held on Saturday, November 2, at
1:30 p.m., at the Dahl Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, 1825 W. 12th St.
with burial in the Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation
will be for an hour before the service time on Saturday at the funeral
home. A memorial fund will be established.
Wallace was born on March 23, 1926 in Iowa Falls, the son of Arnold and
Minnie Geiken Fessler. He served in the U. S. Army and was later
employed as a machinist at John Deere & Company in Waterloo, retiring
on September 30, 1987, after 28 years of employment. He married Marjorie
Johnson in 1948 and they were later divorced. He married Delores
Brown and they were later divorced.
Survivors include his daughter, Trudy Weichers and husband, Dennis of
Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Brett and Brad Weichers of Cedar
Falls and Brandi Bell of Des Moines; three great-grandchildren,
Jordan and Jakob Weichers and Hunter Bell; and a sister-in-law, Emma
Fessler of Ackley, Iowa.
Wallace was preceded in death by his
parents; one brother, James; and one nephew, Jerry Fessler.

Lucille McDonald

Lucille M. McDonald, 76, of Steamboat Rock, died on Wednesday,
October 30, 2002, at the Presbyterian Home in Ackley.
Services were held on Monday, November 4, at the Presbyterian
Church in Steamboat Rock, with Pastor Bruce Baillie
officiating. Interment of her cremains will be on Wednesday, November 6, at 2:00 p.m.,
in the Steamboat
Rock Cemetery.
Lucille was born on May 15, 1926 in Steamboat Rock, to Charles and
Clara Bear Green. She graduated from the Steamboat Rock High School and
attended AIB Business College in Des Moines. She was an energetic
basketball player in Steamboat Rock and also at AIB. Steamboat Rock
won the Iowa basketball championship in 1943 and years later she was
inducted into the Hall of Fame. On September 20, 1944, she married
James McDonald and they started farming on the "Twister Farm" east
of Eldora. They later lived in Salina, Kansas and Valparaiso, Indiana,
before returning to live in Steamboat Rock.
She was a member of the
Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock, the PWC; The Door of Faith
Mission in Des Moines, Beacon of Life for Women in Des Moines, and
the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, James; a daughter, Peggy Ann of
LaGrange Park, Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Donna Monkelien of Fort
Dodge and Lillian Green of San Diego, California.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; and a brother, Major Richard Green.
The Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Evelyn Beurer

Evelyn M. Beurer, 87, of Iowa Falls, died on Thursday, October
31, 2002, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.
Services will
be held on Saturday, November 2, at 1:30 p.m., at the Surls Funeral Home in
Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Rev. Rhoda
Preston will officiate.
Evelyn was born on September 13, 1915 in Iowa Falls, to Henry "Jiggs" and
Harriet Williamson Humphrey. She attended the Iowa Falls Schools. She
married Ralph Elliott on September 18, 1935 and after his death she
married William Beurer on March 25, 1951. She was a member of the
First United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Iowa Falls
Women of the Moose, No. 1108. She was a longtime employee of the
Pat-a-Cake bakery in Iowa Falls.
She is survived by a nephew, David Freese and wife, Carolyn of
Kansas City, Missouri; two nieces, Marilyn Oliver of Rockford,
Illinois and
Jeannine Dawson of Donna, Texas; a sister-in-law, Edna Jacobs of
Cedar Falls; and special friends, Ed and Joy Dougan of Bradford.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; one son,
Dean Elliott; her second husband, Bill Beurer; a sister, Opal Freese;
and a brother, Phil Humphrey.
