R. Dean Bourquin

R. Dean Bourquin, 75, of Geneva, died on Thursday, August 1,
2002, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus in Mason City.
Services were held on Monday, August 5, at the Geneva United Methodist
Church, with burial in the Lindenwood Cemetery rural Geneva.
Dean was born on April 23, 1927, to Raymond and Elizabeth Hannah, in
Geneva. He attended the Geneva High School and served in the Navy,
participating in WW II. On June 4, 1950, he married Verna Andersen
in Dike. Dean was a farmer and a member of the Geneva United Methodist
Church. He was very active in the church and enjoyed reading,
walking and farming.
His survivors include his wife, Verna of Geneva; two sons, Kenn of
Hampton and Dean (Scott) and his wife, Barbara of Jewell; one
daughter, Jolene of Geneva; a sister, Beatrice of Dunbar, West Virginia;
and three grandchildren, Daniel, Elizabeth and Miriam.
Dean was
preceded in death by his parents.

Raymond Kappel

Raymond Kappel, 80, of Ackley, died on Thursday, August 1, 2002,
at his home.
Services were held on Monday, August 5, at
the St. John's
United Church of Christ, with burial in the Oakwood Cemetery, both in
Ackley.
Raymond was born on December 15, 1921, to Joe and Mattie Oelmann Kappel in
Ackley. He attended country school in rural Ackley and married Mary
Ellen Jones on December 12, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Raymond was a farmer and a member of the St. John's United Church of
Christ in Ackley.
He is survived by two sons, David and Dennis, both of Ackley; four
grandsons, Nathan and Mitchell, both of Ackley, Joe of St. Albany,
West Virginia and Dustin Kappel of Center, Missouri; two granddaughters, Andrea Kappel of Des Moines and Sara Kappel of Ames;
and a sister, Edna (Kappel)
Siems of Ackley.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; his
wife, Mary Ellen; and a brother, George Kappel.

Julie Ann Blazek, 60, of Sarasota, Florida, died on
September 5, 2001, at Sarasota.
Private family services
will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2002, in the Oakwood
Cemetery in Ackley. Rev. Karl Anderson will officiate.
Julie was born on June 29, 1941 in Iowa Falls, to Raymond and
Henrietta Hilbrand Stauffacher. She married Robert Blazek.
She is survived by her husband, Robert of Sarasota; a daughter,
Michelle Kuhn of West Palm Beach, Florida; and one grandchild.

Edward McCoy

Edward McCoy, 67, of Hampton, died of natural causes on
Friday, August 2, 2002, in Hampton.
Services were held on
Tuesday, August 6, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church,
Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.
Edward was born on October 18, 1934, to Ursa and Marie P. Newburg in Mt.
Pleasant. He attended the Mt. Pleasant High School and Weslyan College
in Mt. Pleasant for one year. He served in the Korean War as a
member of the U.S. Army. Edward married Mary Stodt in West
Burlington. He worked at Hampton Distributing and Kramer Hardware as
a store clerk for many years.
Edward was a member of the St. Patrick's
Catholic Church, the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, served on
the Church Board of Education, Parish Council and served as an
usher for the church. He enjoyed cars and model trains, family
get-togethers, homemade ice cream, trips, spending time with the
grandchildren and working around the house.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of Hampton; three daughters,
Catherine and her husband, Brad Huffman of Hampton, Michelle and
her husband, Robert Schaefer of Hampton, Kimberly and her husband,
Phillip Walker of Galt; a brother, James of Des Moines; and eight
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Wayne Perkins

Wayne J. Perkins, 94, of Eldora, died on Friday, August 2,
2002, at the Valley View Nursing Center in Eldora, of
natural causes.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, August 7, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Baptist
Church in Eldora, with Pastor Scot Shelburne officiating.
Burial will follow in the Eldora Cemetery. Visitation will
be at the church one hour prior to the services. A memorial
fund has been established.
Wayne was born on June 19, 1908 near Owasa, to Clarence and Lilly
Bender Perkins. He attended school at the Owasa Consolidated
Schools. Wayne joined his father in farming in Hardin County and on
August 29, 1929, he was united in marriage to Pearl Beecher. In 1946,
they bought a farm in Grundy County and in 1973 he moved to Eldora
after retirement. Wayne became a resident of Valley View Nursing
Center in 1997. As a young man he enjoyed playing the saxophone at
the Baptist Church and also at the Jackson Township Hall.
Wayne is survived by his daughter, Eileen and her husband, Jim
McClellan of Eldora; two grandsons, David and Mark McClellan; three
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Scott of Cedar Rapids.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Pearl in 1989;
and an infant son in 1930.

Tressa Strahorn

Tressa Charlene Strahorn, 83, of Scottsdale,
Arizona and formerly of Iowa Falls, died on Friday, August 2, 2002, at the
Chandler Care Center, Chandler, Arizona, of complications from
Alzheimer's disease.
Memorial services will be
held on Friday, August 9, at 11:00
a.m., at the Linn's Funeral Chapel, Iowa Falls, with Rev. Rhoda
Preston officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Union Cemetery, Iowa
Falls.
Tressa was born on July 19, 1918 at Ames, to Fred W. and Violet Hall.
She graduated from the Iowa Falls Community Schools with the class
of 1937. On August 1, 1937, she married Kenneth R. Strahorn at the
Little Brown Church, Nashua. She and her husband owned and operated
Hall-Strahorn Hardware in Algona for several years. The couple moved
to Iowa Falls in the early '60s, where they assumed ownership and
operation of the Iowa Falls Roofing Company. They retired in 1983 to
Scottsdale.
Tressa was an active community volunteer in Iowa Falls.
She was a charter member of the Ellsworth Hospital's "Pink Ladies."
She was a Past Worthy Matron of the White Shrine. She was actively
involved in various guilds and circles within the First United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Kay and her husband, Jack
Nicholson of Dallas, Texas and Judith Lee and her husband, Robert Wiskus of McCook Lake, South Dakota; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Strahorn of
Sacramento, California; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and
a sister, Betty Tinken of Humboldt.
She was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband, Kenneth; her son, Fred; a granddaughter,
Jacqueline Nicholson; and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Wiskus.
The Linn's Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel, is in charge of
the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to local Iowa Falls
foundations, Alzheimer's disease or SIDS.

Charlen Richtsmeier

Charlen M. Richtsmeier, 65, of Iowa Falls, died on
Saturday, August 3, 2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services will be
held on Wednesday, August 7, at 10:30 a.m., at
the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Eldora, with burial to follow
in the St.
Peter's Cemetery, Geneva.
Charlen was born on May 20, 1937 at Kalispell, Montana, to Everett J.
and Metilda M. Cartie Akey. She graduated from the Akin Community
Schools in Minnesota and also from the Duluth, Minnesota nursing
school. She was united in marriage to Robert C. Thompson, II, in
1958. They were later divorced. She was married to Robert Smith in
1988 and they were later divorced. On April 8, 2000, she married
Dean A. Richtsmeier at the St. Peter's Church in Geneva.
Charlen was a
licensed practical nurse with the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls. She
was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora.
Survivors include her husband, Dean of Iowa Falls; two daughters,
Barbara and her husband, Randy Benson of Forest City and Pamela
and her husband, Gary White of Webster City; two sons, Robert C.
Thompson, III and his wife, Patty of New Providence and Richard
Thompson of Hendersonville, Tennessee; two stepchildren, Lee Richtsmeier
of Ankeny and Susan Richtsmeier of Guernesville, California; eight
grandchildren; and one sister, Jean Steffno of Minnesota.

Paulene K. Meyer

Paulene K. Meyer, 74, of Aplington, died on Saturday, August
3, 2002, at the Maple Manor Care Center due to a lengthy illness.
Services were held on Tuesday, August 6, at
the Hitesville Gospel Hall, with
burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington.
Paulene was born on December 9, 1927 in Kesley, to August J. and Anna
Meinders Brinkman. She married Edwin Meyer on August 28, 1946, at the
Little Brown Church in Nashua. Paulene was a part-time bookkeeper
for over 40 years for the Aplington and Ackley Sales Pavilion and
Farm Service in Aplington.
She is survived by her husband, Edwin; a son, Allan and his wife,
Arlene Meyer of Aplington; a daughter, Dianne and her husband,
Curtis Martens of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty and her husband, Bud Williams
of Allison.
Paulene was preceded in death by her parents.

Marian Luiken

Marian Luiken, 93, of Steamboat Rock, died from
natural causes on Saturday, August 3, 2002, at the Presbyterian
Village in Ackley.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, August 6, at
the First Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock, with burial in the
Steamboat Rock Cemetery.
Marian was born on May, 22, 1909 in Newton, to Earl and Esther
Townsend Barton, being orphaned at age 11. As a teen she lived with
an aunt and uncle in Valley Junction. They moved to Steamboat Rock
after buying a hotel in 1923. She attended the Steamboat Rock High
School. On July 14, 1925, she was united in marriage to William J. Luiken in Eldora and they farmed southeast of Steamboat Rock. Marian
was a member of the First Baptist Church of Steamboat Rock.
She is survived by a daughter, Marjorie of Eldora; two
grandchildren, Diane Kuiper of Cedar Rapids and Bruce Trout of
Goodman, Missouri; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband; a sister, Dolly; two infant sisters;
two brothers, Harry and Stuart; and a son-in-law, Willard Trout.

Mary Meeker

Mary Meeker, 84, of Eldora, died on Sunday, August 4, 2002,
at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Services will be held on
Thursday, August 8, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity United
Methodist Church in Huxley, with Rev. Ann Lipponcot of the Eldora Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will follow in the Story Memorial Gardens in Ames. Visitation
will be on Wednesday, from 5-9:00 p.m., at the Biersborn Funeral Home in Union,
with the family present from 6-8:00 p.m.
Mary was born on November 19, 1917 in Union, to Ross and Susie Glenn Hockett. She was raised and educated in this area and attended
Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls. She taught country school
and on January 21, 1941, she married Willard Meeker at the Chester
Friends Church in Union. They farmed in the Union area for 20 years
before moving to Huxley. She was a teller at the Story County Bank
and after 34 years she relocated to Eldora.
She is survived by her husband, Willard; three daughters, Susie
Reece of Eldora, Lyla Bechard and husband, Nick of Lake Havasu City,
Arizona and Jean Hempel and husband, Steve of Omaha, Nebraska; a
son-in-law, Mike Bear and wife, Cindy of Newton; a sister-in-law,
Romaine Hockett of Union; eight grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Paul; two
children, infant daughter Jane and daughter Dorothy; a
granddaughter, Angela Bear; and son-in-law, Earl Reece.

Louis Kielsmeier

Louis Herman Henry Kielsmeier, 89, of Hubbard, died on
Thursday, August 8, 2002, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Services were held on Monday, August 12, at
the St. John's Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Hubbard, with burial in the Tipton Norwegian
Lutheran Cemetery, Hubbard. Rev. Matthew Rueger officiated.
Louis was born on April 23, 1913, to Fred and Lena Kulow Kielsmeier on
the family farm northwest of Hubbard. He attended the Tipton Township
School and married Gladys Towley on February 17, 1938, at her parents'
farm. They spent most of their working years farming in the
Hubbard-Buckeye area.
He was a member of the St. John's Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Hubbard and served many years as sexton of the
Tipton Norwegian Lutheran Cemetery. He was a resident of Colonial
Manor in Zearing for nine years.
He is survived by a daughter, Judith and her husband, Donald Wolkow
of DeSmet, South Dakota; two sons, Dennis and wife, Karen and Larry and wife,
Becky, all of Hubbard; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren;
and one brother, Martin Kielsmeier of Hubbard.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and his wife in 1986.

Robert Wayne Williamson, 83, of Dumont, died on Saturday,
Auguat 19, 2002, at the Dumont Care Center.
Services were held on
Tuesday, August 13, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Dumont, with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg.
Rev. Bob Scholten and Steve
Walvatne officiated.
Robert was born on June 25, 1919 in rural Franklin County, to James and Leta Sapp Williamson. He was educated in the Allison
Schools and was
a member of the Dumont Reformed Church.
He is survived by a brother, Herb Williamson and wife, Betty of
Aplington; a sister, Betty Walvatne and husband, Harold of Waterloo;
four nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his
parents and a nephew.

Maurice Uhlenhopp

Maurice Uhlenhopp, 85, of Nevada, formerly of Aplington,
died on Saturday, August 10, 2002, at the Rolling Green Village in Nevada.
Services were held on Tuesday, August 13, at the First Presbyterian
Church in Aplington and burial will be on Saturday, August 17, at 10:30
a.m., in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington.
Maurice was born on September 24, 1916 in Rockford, to Dietrich and Irene
Beaumont Uhlenhopp. He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1934
and was a pre-med student for two years at the University of Iowa.
On September 24, 1936, he married Marcia Meickley at the Black's Tea Room in
Waterloo. He ran the Kesley Merchantile Store after his father's
death and later farmed with his father-in-law. From 1959-66 he
owned and operated the Kemm Rambler car dealership in Aplington.
He
was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington and the
Elks Club in Iowa Falls. His hobbies were woodworking, welding,
repairing cars and riding horses.
He is survived by two sons, Eldon and his wife, Patty of Ames and
Kent of Campbell, California; eight grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his
wife; and a sister, Valda Pressler.
The

Ruth Trittien

Ruth E. Trittien, 86, of Steamboat Rock, died on
Saturday, August 10, 2002, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Facility in
Iowa Falls.
Services were held on Tuesday, August 13, at the First Baptist
Church in Steamboat Rock, with burial in the Eastlawn Memory Garden in
Eldora. Pastor Bruce Baillie officiated.
Ruth was born on May 3, 1916, to Enno and Alice Tholen Luiken. She was
raised on the farm and attended the Hughes Country School and graduated
from the Eldora High School in 1934. In February of 1942, she married
Henry "Hank" Trittien at her parents home in Steamboat Rock. They
lived for over 40 years on a farm one mile west of their county
home. They retired in 1984 and moved to Steamboat Rock. Ruth moved
to Scenic Manor in 1998.
She was a lifelong member of the First
Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock, where she taught boy's Sunday
School for 20 years in the Dorcas Society.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Anna Elzig of
Clarissa, Minnesota and Helen Shafer of Eldora; a brother-in-law, Joe Trittien
of Eldora; and 10 nephews and seven nieces.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband in 1989; and two brothers, Wendell
and Harold Luiken.

Dale Crosser

Dale Eugene Crosser, 88, of Eldora, formerly of Alden, died
on Sunday, August 11, 2002, at the Mary Greeley Medical
Center in Ames.
Services will be held on
Thursday, August 15, at 2:00 p.m., at the Surls Funeral
Home in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Cottage Cemetery, rural Iowa
Falls. Rev. Russell Surls will officiate. Visitation will be on
Wednesday, from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Dale was born on April 23, 1914 at Iowa Falls, to Jess and Minnie Bork
Crosser. He attended Hardin County Country Schools. He never
married. He farmed the family farm which was a "Century Farm" and
had been in the family since 1874. His hobbies were hunting and
fishing. He was a resident of the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center
since September of 1999.
He is survived by two nephews, Richard Crosser of Iowa Falls and Dan
Crosser of Manhattan Beach, California; and a niece, Susan Hawk of
Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother,
Elmer Crosser.

Gabrielle was born on August 11, 2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital to
Lisa Barth of Dows. She is survived by her mother; her twin sister,
Riley Hope of Dows; grandparents, Barb Schipper and LaVerne Schipper
of Dows; great-grandmother, Mary Schipper of Iowa Falls; five uncles,
Chris, Tracy, Mike, Pat and John Barth.

Idella Lucile Freie, 80, of Hampton, died on Wednesday, August
14, 2002, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center at Mason City.

Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Jon Anderson will
officiate.
Idella was born on September 20, 1921 in rural Franklin County, to Ralph
and Gertie Meints Schmidt. She attended rural schools near Latimer
and on April 9, 1941, she married Kenneth Freie. She was a homemaker
and enjoyed cooking, baking and working on the family farm. Idella
was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton.
She is survived by three sons, Darwin and Norlin Freie, both of
Hampton and Darrel Freie of Mason City; five grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; and two sisters, Lirlene and Viola.

John Cakerice

John Irvin Cakerice, 88, of Eldora, died on Wednesday, August 14,
2002, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 17, at
the UCC Congregational
Church, at 10:30 a.m., with burial in the Eldora City Cemetery. Mary Stonebraker will officiate.
John was born on January 9, 1914 in Buckeye, Kansas, to Irvine and Alice
Turner Cakerice. He grew up in Grundy County where he attended
school. On July 8, 1934, he married Ferne Fox at the the Little
Brown Church at Nashua. He farmed in the Union and Whitten area
until moving to Eldora in 1987. He retired from farming in 1979. He
was a former member of the Whitten School Board and was active in
the UCC Congregational Church in Eldora.
He is survived by two sons, Maurice and wife, Marilyn Cakerice of
Eldora and Dwayne and wife, Sandra Cakerice of Ames; five
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gwen
Albright and husband, Miles of Ames and Evelyn Schmidt of Hillsboro,
Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1997; two
brothers; and two sisters.

Jennie Maifeld

Jennie Maifeld, 88, of Hampton, died on Friday, August 16, 2002,
at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility at Hampton.
Services
were held on Monday, August 19, at the Washington Reformed Church, rural
Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Jack Ritsema
officiated.
Jennie was born on June 20, 1914 in Franklin County, to Henry and Gertie Brinkman Ubben. On March 14, 1936, she married Albert Maifeld
in Dumont. She was a homemaker and a member of the Washington
Reformed Church.
She is survived by two sons, Dale and wife, Arlene of Hampton and
Ronald and wife, Judy of Humboldt; two daughters, Marjore Freese and
husband, Herman and Jan O'Donnell and husband, Pat, all of Hampton; 11
grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband; a sister; four brothers; and one
grandchild.

Leonard Westwick

Leonard E. Westwick, 77, of Williams, died on Saturday, August
17, 2002, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.
Services were
held on Tuesday, August 20, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williams, with
burial in the Rose Grove Cemetery, rural Williams. Rev. Tom Hunt
officiated.
Leonard was born on January 8, 1925 in Williams, to Jacob and Carrie Hill Westwick. He graduated from
the Ellsworth High School and never married.
He was a farmer and owned his own turkey farm. Leonard enjoyed
bowling and was a sport enthusiast.
He is survived by a sister, Ruth Ruppel of Webster City; two
sisters-in-law, Hazel Westwick of Iowa Falls and Ruth Westwick of
Ellsworth; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Merlin and Jesse Westwick;

Margery Lillian Prilipp, 85, of Hampton, died on Saturday,
August 17, 2002, at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield.
Services
were held on Tuesday, August 20, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Hampton, with burial in the Wayside Cemetery at Chapin. Rev. Randy
Dickinson officiated.
Margery was born on April 28, 1917, to Ira and Mary Powell Morrow at
Anoka, Minnesota. She graduated from the Thornton High School and on October 4,
1936, she married Virgil Prilipp at Thompson. She was a homemaker
and attended the Church of the Open Bible in Iowa Falls.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Moore and husband, Robert of
Alexander and Eva Miller and husband, Larry of Plainfield; two sons,
Roger and wife, Jo of Tucson, Arizona and Lloyd and wife, Elaine of
Bettendorf; a sister, Rhoda Collison of Payson, Arizona; two
sisters-in-law, Hazel Morrow of Becker, Minnesota and Leona Goulty of
Belmond; a foster son, Kenneth Kothe of Alexander; 12 grandchildren
and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband; a son-in-law; a grandson; four brothers and
two sisters.

Adeline Staples, 84, of Brownsdale, Minnesota,
formerly of Alden, died on Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at her home.
Services were held on Friday, August 23, at the United Methodist Church
with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery, both in Brownsdale.
She was born on September 20, 1917 in Webster City, to Roy and Gladys
Matthews Balentine. She graduated from the Alden High School in 1935 and
on June 13, 1938, she married Roy Sumner in Webster City. They
farmed in that area until moving to Brownsdale in 1948. They farmed
until Roy's death in 1953. She worked at a grocery store until 1956,
when she married Clarence Staples and they moved to Stewartville.
They later divorced and she moved back to Brownsdale.
She was a
member of the United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday
School. Her hobbies were crafts, sewing, playing cards and puzzle
books.
She is survived by a son, Larry Sumner and wife, Bonnie of Waltham,
Minnesota; two daughters, Rita Luthe and husband, Robert of Brownsdale
and Marla Ohm and husband, Robert of Sparta, Wisconsin; nine
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roy Balentine
and wife, Mary of Alden.
She was preceded in death by her parents and
her husbands.

Robert A. Campbell, 71, of Ames, died on Thursday, August
22, 2002, at his home.
Memorial services were
held on Monday, August 26, at the Campus Episcopal Church in
Ames, with private burial services to be held at the Ames
Municipal Cemetery.
Robert was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and had lived in South
Dakota before moving to Ames 36 years ago. He was a retired
journalist and production manager with the Iowa State University
Press and an Army veteran. He was a member of numerous
organizations and a volunteer with the Youth and Shelter
Services, elementary schools, and the Ames Public Library.
He is survived by his wife, Ann (Hamilton) Campbell a former
Iowa Falls resident; a son, Brian of Washington D.C.; a
daughter, Allison of St. Louis, Missouri; and a brother, Doug of
Traverse City, Michigan.

Loren August Stock, 80, of Hampton, died on Saturday, August
24, 2002, at the Knoxville VA Medical Center.
Services will be held on
Thursday, August 29, at 1:30 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Hampton, with burial at a later date. Dick
Parker will officiate.
Loren was born on October 10, 1921 at Dumont, to August and Wilma Pfaltzgraff Stock. He attended the Dumont
Schools and served in
the United States Navy in World War II. On August 10, 1946, he
married Alice Muhlenbruch in Cedar Falls. He retired from
Farmland Foods in 1983.
Loren was a Presbyterian and member of
the Hampton American Legion. His hobbies were fishing, playing
cards and traveling.
He is survived by three daughters, Judy Dishman of Clear Lake,
Diane Andrews and husband, Myron of Newton and Jolene Prescott
and husband, Ronald of Des Moines; a son, Jim Stock of Clarion;
four sisters; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; his wife; and one grandson.

D. E. Judy, 90, of Hampton, died on Saturday, August 24,
2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit at Mason
City.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, August 28, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Christian
Church at Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev.
Joe Jones will officiate.
D. E. was born on August 20, 1912 at Cessna Park, Illinois, to Edwin and
Nellie Neeld Judy. He attended Hansell Schools and on May 4,
1941, he married Mary Carter at Iowa Falls. He was employed by
the
Iowa Public Service Power Company for 27 years and retired in
1977.
He was a charter member of the First Christian Church. He
enjoyed volunteer work, working at the fair in the Democratic
booth and enjoyed playing cards and golfing.
He is survived by two sons, Bradley and wife, Patti of Iowa Falls
and Jeffrey and wife, Judy Judy of Bloomington, Minnesota; a brother,
Lowell Judy of Menden, Nevada; five grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife; a sister and two brothers.

William H. Jass, 72, of Alden, died on Sunday, August 25,
2002, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.
Services
will be held on Thursday, August 29, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in Alden, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Rev.
Jay Jaeger will officiate. Visitation will be at the Surls Funeral
Home in Alden, on Wednesday from 3-8:00 p.m., with the family present
from 6-8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family.
William was born on December 28, 1929 in Wilkie, to Herman and Mary
Alice Briese Jass. He graduated from the Alden High School in 1947
and on November 26, 1950, he married Doris Saathoff at the St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in Alden. He was semi-retired from farming.
Bill
was a director and president of the Alden Co-op, an elder,
trustee, usher and on the building committee of his church. He
was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Doris of Alden; three sons, Michael
and wife, LeAnn of Allerton, John and wife, Pam of VanWert and
David and wife, Darcie of Alden; a daughter, Jane Dunning and
husband, Tom of Alden; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
a brother, Victor and wife, Maxine of Alden; two sisters,
Margaret Block and husband, Dean of Webster City and Ann Jass of
Marshalltown; and a sister-in-law, Jill Frazer of Buckeye.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Chris; a

Avon L. Price, 83, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, passed away on Thursday,
August 29, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Cause: heart failure.
Funeral services will be
held at
10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, September 3, at the First United Methodist
church, Iowa Falls, with burial in the Northlawn Memory Gardens
Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Reverend Don Preston will officiate.
Visitation will be from 2-8:00 p.m., on Monday, at the Linn's
Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel, with the family present to
receive friends between the hours of 6-8:00 p.m., on Monday
evening. The Linn's Funeral Homes are in charge of the arrangements.
Avon L. Gorder, was born on March 29, 1919, on her parents farm near
Dows, Iowa, the daughter of Chris and Emma (Ellingson) Gorder.
She attended country schools and graduated from the Dows, Iowa
Community Schools with the class of 1936.
In 1939, she was united in marriage to Clarence M. Price at the
Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. To this union three children
were born, Karen, Dean and Marlene.
In 1958, Clarence and Avon moved to Iowa Falls and
purchased the hatchery. She operated the Price Hatchery from
1958 until retirement.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa
Falls, the church circle and a former member of the Ladies of
the Moose.
Avon is survived by her son, Dean R. Price and his wife, Donna of
Iowa City; one daughter, Marlene M. Stott and husband, Dale
of Ackley; one son-in-law, Neil Havens of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren, Darci Koehnk and husband,
Hans of Jewell, Dawn Garms and husband, Aaron of La Cross,
Wisconsin, Mitch and Teesa Price of Iowa City, Kevin Price of
Lake Mills, Penny Stott of Emmetsburg, Angela Wood of Ackley, Keelie
Zacharias of Lake Mills and
Kristin Stott of Ackley; nine great-grandchildren; one
sister, Leona Hackbarth of Iowa Falls; and one brother,
Wallace Gorder of Iowa Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Emma Gorder;
one daughter, Karen K. Havens; one granddaughter, Melissa
Havens; and one brother, Dale Gorder.

Herman Groote

Herman Donald Groote, 81, of Wellsburg, died on Thursday,
August 29, 2002, at the Maple Manor Nursing Home in
Aplington.
Services were held on
Monday, September 1, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church, with
burial in the Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. Pastor Harold
Miller and Rev. Todd Rempe officiated. Military
rites were provided by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and the American
Legion Post No. 213.
Herman was born on June 26, 1921 in Grundy County, to Harm and
Annie Buskohl Groote on the family farm. He graduated from the
Grundy High School in 1939 and on December 14, 1942, he married Junice Beecroft. He served three years in the Pacific during
World War II. After service he farmed for 14 years and then
became a rural mail carrier. He carried mail 13 years for
Holland and 10 years for Conrad.
He was a member of the
Wellsburg Reformed Church, AMVETS and the American Legion. His
hobbies were golf, bowling and traveling.
He is survived by his son, Sheldon and wife, DaNelle of
Montezuma; a daughter-in-law, Mary Groote of Arvada, Colorado; three
grandchildren; two brothers, Benjamin Groote and wife, Viola of
Grundy Center and Roy Groote and wife, Bernice of Dike; and a
sister, Mary DeBerg and husband, Herman of Grundy Center.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1995; a son,
Preston in 2002; and a brother, Ernest.

Verla Mae Doughty, 63, of Iowa Falls, died on Thursday,
August 29, 2002, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.
Services were held on Saturday, August 31, at
the Jehovah's Witness
Kingdom Hall in Iowa Falls. There was no funeral service.
Verla was born on May 12, 1939 at Webster City, to Francis and
Helen Elliott Powell. She graduated from the Webster City High
School and on December 23, 1977, she married Vaughn Doughty in Iowa
Falls. She was employed as an LPN at Ellsworth Hospital. Her
hobbies were sewing and crocheting.
She is survived by three sons, Larry Schlachter of Iowa Falls,
Dale Schlachter of Milford and Warren Schlachter of Alden; three
daughters, Tina Phillips of Iowa Falls, Dawn Schlachter of Iowa
Falls and Judy Friest of Des Moines; a half brother, Dean
Goodrich Jr. of Webster City; 13 grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents
and husband, Vaughn.

Joyce (Jodi) was born on November 4, 1940 in Wadena, Minnesota, to Oscar Soper
and Stella Nohrenberg. She is survived by her former husband; six
children, Annette Rauenhorest and husband, Lynn Soper of Fort Dodge,
James Soper of Clarinda, Karlyn Snedeker of Newell, Dan Soper of
Ames and Earl Soper and wife, Jackie of Boone; four grandchildren; her
stepmother, Kitty Nohrenberg of Jackson, Minnesota; a sister, Gayle Hutzel and husband, Fred of Iowa Falls; a step-sister, Connie
Anderson and husband, LeRoy of Jackson; a brother, Neil Nohrenberg
and friend, Carol of Alden.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
