Stanley Sams

Stanley K. Sams, 62, of Union, died on Friday, March 1, 2002,
at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.
Services were held on
Tuesday, March 5, at the Whitten Community Church, with burial in the
Hauser Cemetery, rural Whitten.
Stanley was born on August 29, 1939 at Marshalltown, to Everette and Irma
O'Neall Sams. He was raised and graduated from the Green Mountain High
School in 1958. He served in the United States Navy from 1958-62.
On March 31, 1963, he married Susan VanPelt in State Center. He was
employed by KIOWA Corporation, Dunham-Bush and in 1968 began a long
career with Lennox Industries, retiring in February 2002. Stanley was a
member of the Whitten Community Church.
He is survived by his wife, Susan of Union; four sons, Mike Sams
and his wife, Angie of Eldora, Jim Sams and wife, Pattie of
Bolingbrook, Illinois, Chuck Sams and wife, Debbie and Gary Sams and
wife, Christy, all of Whitten; his mother, Irma Curley of Nevada;
his father, Everette Sams and wife, June of Whitten; a brother,
Paul Sams and wife, Cheryl of Marshalltown; a sister, Judy Boughton
and husband, Jack of Van Meter; and five grandchildren.

Petra Mejia

Petra "Betty" Mejia, 81, of Hampton, died
on
Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in
Hampton.
Services will be held on Wednesday, March 6, at 10:30
a.m., at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton, with burial
in the Catholic Cemetery in Manly. Father Jim Miller will
officiate.
Betty was born on March 9, 1920 in Granger, Texas, to Pedro Rodriquez
and Cypriana Bayesteros. She attended schools in Granger, Texas and
on September 24, 1935, she married Joseph Mejia in Granger. She was a
member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton and her hobbies
were sewing, gardening and cooking.
She is survived by five sons, Ray and special friend, Donna Mejia of
Manly, Patrick Mejia of Hampton, James Mejia and wife, Shirley of
Hampton, Felix Mejia and wife, Bettylou of Mason City and Joseph
Mejia and wife, Carol of North Port, Florida; three daughters, Angela
Wagner of Springfield, Missouri, Janie Rocha and husband, Art of Hampton
and Vacilia McBride of Beloit, Wisconsin; granddaughter/daughter,
Patricia Fitz and husband, Brian of Northwood; two sisters,
Beatrice Rosales of Holland, Michigan and Refugia Trevana of Austin,
Texas.; 27 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
her husband; one son; one daughter; two brothers; a twin sister; and
two grandsons.
The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Hampton, was in charge of

Maxine Kielsmeier

Maxine Kielsmeier, 75, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday,
March 2, 2002, at the Scenic Manor Care Center, after a lengthy illness.
Services will be held on Friday, March 8, at 10:00 a.m., at the United
Methodist Church in Alden, with burial in the Northlawn Memory Gardens,
Iowa Falls. Pastor Richard Layman will officiate. Visitation will be
at the Linn's Funeral Home, from 2-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, with the family
present from 6-8:00 p.m.
Maxine was born on March 30, 1926 in Rowan, to Byrd and Daisy Lawrence Silvey. She graduated from
the Alden High School in 1943 and then moved
with her parents to Iowa Falls. She was a telephone operator for
the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. On November 4, 1949, she married Marlyn Kielsmeier at the First Baptist Church in Iowa Falls. They
farmed southwest of Buckeye and retired to Iowa Falls in 1985. She
enjoyed cooking, attending church and traveling.
She is survived by her husband, Marlyn of Iowa Falls; three sons,
James and wife, DeAnne of Alden, Jerry and wife, Linda of Dysart
and Jeffrey and wife, Vicky of Alden; seven grandchildren, Dena Zoske and husband, Chad of Hubbard, Christopher Kielsmeier and
wife, Kelly of Brownwood, Texas, Jack Kielsmeier of Ames, Krista Kielsmeier of Dysart and Katie and Anna Kielsmeier of Hubbard; two
great-grandchildren, Kylee and Kaden Zoske of Hubbard; a sister,
Tinceoline Ziesman of Iowa Falls; and three sisters-in-law, Wilma
Silvey, Nell Silvey and Frances VanSlyke, all of Iowa Falls; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Lawrence, Reuel, Veachel,
Cecil, Emory and Elmer Silvey.
The Linn's Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is
handling the arrangements.

Karen Duckworth

Karen I. Duckworth, 56, of Cedar Falls, died
on
Sunday, March 3, 2002, at the Sartori Memorial Hospital Emergency Room in Cedar
Falls, after suffering a heart attack at her home.
Services will be
held on Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m., at the Open Bible Church in Waterloo,
with burial in the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Cedar Falls.
Karen was born on January 3, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, to John and Gertrude
Lee Nye. She graduated from the Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School in
1964 and attended Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls in 1967-68. On
April 20, 1968, she married Terry Duckworth in Cedar Rapids. She had
worked as a shipping clerk for Boyt Luggage in Iowa Falls, then for
the Cedar Book Store in Waterloo. She was a member of the First
Church of the Open Bible in Waterloo.
She is survived by her husband, Terry of Cedar Falls; a daughter,
Tammy Hare and husband, Shane of Cedar Falls; a son, Toni Duckworth
and his wife, Melinda of Coralville; two grandsons, Daniel and
Dylan Hare of Cedar Falls; three brothers, John Nye of Wellman,
Leroy and Richard Nye, both of Hiawatha; and a sister, Linda Terrones of Cedar Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lloyd Tibbs

Lloyd Fenton Tibbs, 76, of Madison, North Carolina, died
on
Sunday, March 3, 2002, at the Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville,
North Carolina.
Services were held on Tuesday, March 5, at the Chapel of Ray
Funeral Home in Madison, with Brother Paul Sisk officiating.
Internment was in the Guilford Memorial Park in Madison.
Lloyd was born on July 24, 1925 in Worth County, Iowa, to Lloyd and
Hazel Stuart Tibbs. He served in World War II in the United States
Navy and was owner and operator of the Tibbs Mail Hauling Company in
Madison.
He is survived by two brothers, Robert Tibbs and wife, Frances of
Madison and Daryl Tibbs of Iowa Falls; and several nieces and
nephews, David Tibbs of South Carolina, Steve Tibbs, Ramona Kraft,
Lucy Riggins, Jack Tibbs, Alan Tibbs, Linda Asmussen, Andy Tibbs
and Luke Tibbs, all in Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife, Marie Sprinkle Tibbs in 1996; and his brother, Lauren.

Dr. William Gonda

Dr. William R. "Bill" Gonda, 79, of West Des
Moines, died on Saturday, March 3, 2002, of renal failure at the Iowa
Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
Services were held on Wednesday, March
6, at the McClaren's Funeral Chapel, with burial in the Resthaven Cemetery,
both in West Des Moines.
Dr. Gonda was born on May 12, 1922, to Andrew and Mary Gonda in
Detroit, Michigan. He served in the United States Army in World War II.
He served as a doctor in several states and in Hubbard and Eldora.
His last employer was the VA Medical Health Center in Des Moines and
he taught three years at Des Moines University. His hobby was
photography.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of West Des Moines; two
daughters, Ann Lindaman and husband, Kendall of Iowa Falls and
Carmen Ites of Iowa Falls; a stepdaughter, Claudia Mestdagh of West
Des Moines; two brothers, Roger Gonda of Lake Orion, Michigan and David Gonda of Farmington, Michigan; a sister, Elsie Gonda of Marion; four
grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
and a step-great-grandchild.

Thelma Alexander

Thelma Alexander, 67, of Hubbard, died of
cancer on Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des
Moines.
Services were held on Tuesday, March 12, at the Salem
Methodist Church in Hubbard, with burial in the Hubbard
Cemetery.
Thelma was born on July 13, 1934 at Webb, to Wilbur and Effie Hovinga
Bittinger. She graduated from the Webb High School in 1952 and attended
Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and later earned a BA in
Elementary Education at Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Nebraska
in 1963. On August 16, 1954, she married Estel Alexander at the Webb
Methodist Church. She taught school in Nebraska and Iowa and in
June 1960, they moved to Hubbard, where she taught elementary for
several years in Hubbard and Radcliffe. She retired in 1994 after
twenty-two years of teaching and many years of substituting while
raising her four sons.
She was active in the Salem Methodist Church,
a past member of UMW and Order of the Eastern Star. She was also
affiliated with local educational organizations ISEA and NEA.
She is survived by her husband, Estel of Hubbard; four sons, Curtis
and his wife, Kathy of Mt. Pleasant, Craig and wife, Marcia of
Oskaloosa, Colin and wife, Elizabeth of Columbus, Nebraska and Calvert
and wife, Kim of Grain Valley, Missouri; and eleven grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Esther Smith; and a
brother, Morton Bittinger.
The Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Marlys Ann Frey

Marlys Ann Frey, 93, of Aplington, died on
Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Maple Manor Care Center in
Aplington.
Services will be held on Wednesday, March 13, at
10:30 a.m., at the Aplington Baptist Church, with burial in
the
Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington.
Marlys was born on September 9, 1908 in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Peter and
Bertha Bruns Luppen. She graduated from the Aplington High School and on
January 24, 1931, she married Edward Frey in Steamboat Rock. They
farmed most of their life near Aplington. She was a faithful member
of the Aplington Baptist Church and the Benevolent Society.
She is survived by a son, Robert Frey and wife, Betty of Aplington;
a daughter, Betty Reed and husband, Harold of Urbandale; a
son-in-law, Harold Stockdale of Ames; seven grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband in July, 1999; an infant daughter, Merna and a daughter,
Dahlia Stockdale in June 1998; and a sister, Esther Leerhoff.

Anna Wolff

Anna Marie Wolff, 79, of Aplington, died on
Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Maple Manor Village in
Aplington.
Services were held on Tuesday, March 12, at the
Aplington Baptist Church, with burial in the Pleasant View
Cemetery, Aplington.
Anna was born on January 10, 1923 in Sibley, to Harm and Mary Peters Frieling. At age twelve they moved to Grundy Center where she
graduated from high school in 1941. She received her Normal Teaching
Certificate and taught country school in Grundy County. On June 4,
1946, she married Henry Wolff in Grundy Center and they farmed south
of Aplington until 1989, when they moved into Aplington.
She was a
member of the Aplington Baptist Church and was involved in The Home
Bible League, White Cross work and quilted with the women of the
church. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and baking.
She is survived by her husband, Henry of Aplington; two daughters, LaDonnis Wolff of Nashua and LaDonna Gaves and her husband, Don of
Dike; two sons, LaVern and his wife, Cindy of Aplington and Gary of
Oakland, California; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two
brothers, Ben Frieling of Grundy Center and Herman Frieling of
Hegins, Pennsylvania.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Meinhardt; and a sister, Etta White.
The Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapter of Aplington, was in charge of

Dorothy Leonard

Dorothy Marie Leonard, 80, of Aplington, died
on
Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in
Waterloo.
Services were held on Monday, March 18, at the Zion
Lutheran Church at Oelwein, with burial of the cremains in the Wadena Cemetery at Wadena.
Dorothy was born on February 19, 1922, to William and Ella Schmitt Young.
She married Gilbert Joe Leonard. She was a press operator for
Chamberlin Manufacturing and retired in 1970. Dorothy worked as a
welder in the shipyards of San Francisco, California during World War
II.
She is survived by a son, Thomas Leonard Sr. of Aplington; a
daughter, Trudy Tyler of Holbrook, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Thomas
"T.J." Leonard, Amy Burney and Joseph Leonard, all of Aplington.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert; a
sister, Ida Mae Rowell; a brother, William Young; and one
granddaughter, Christina Leonard.

John Folkerds

John H. Folkerds, 73, of Hampton, died on Monday, March 11,
2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Services will be held on
Thursday, March 14, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Hampton, with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Rev. Jon Anderson will
officiate. Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 4-8:00 p.m., at the
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
John was born on May 2, 1928 at Hampton, to Jans and Hilda Miller
Folkerds. He graduated from the Dumont High School and on September 11,
1947, he married Delta Froning at Dumont. He worked for the Maytag
Company for 39 years.
John was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church
in Hampton. He enjoyed basketball, football and baseball, liked to
play cards and fish and hunt. He was a dedicated family man.
He is survived by his wife, Delta of Hampton; a son, Roger and
wife, Linda of Grinnell; a daughter, Joyce Eitel and husband, James
of Newton; four sisters, Etta Reysack of Dumont, Tillene McGrean of
Des Moines, Kathern Richards of Greene and Jeanette Hayner of
Dumont; a brother, LaVern Folkerds of Dumont; two grandchildren;
five step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one
step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a
son, Ronald; and a brother, Claus.

Maynard Smith

Maynard Louis Smith, 79, of Covina, California, was born
in Iowa Falls on January 28, 1923, to John and Ada Smith and attended
Iowa Falls Schools for several years. He enlisted in the United
States Navy during World War II and his ship was bombed. He lived
for a time on a life raft which saved his life. He married Mildred Homeyer in July, 1945. They lived in Waterloo in the 50's and 60's
where he worked as a car salesman. They moved to California in 1964
and he worked for a Chevrolet dealer for 26 years and moved to
Covina in 1969.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred of 56 years; three children,
Jerry Smith and wife, Pam of Covina; a daughter, Diana and husband,
Richard of Walnut, California and Bruce Smith and wife, Sharon of McLoud, Oklahoma; three brothers; two sisters; and several grandchildren.

Frances Kadolph

Frances M. Kadolph, 81, of Eldora, died on Thursday, March 14,
2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
A
Mass of
Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, March 19, at the St. Mary's Catholic
Church, with burial in the church cemetery, both in Eldora. Father
James Dubert officiated.
Frances was born on February 28, 1921 in Manchester, to Fred and Seba
Brookman Rahfeldt. At two years of age her family moved to Zearing
where she graduated from high school in 1938. On February 5, 1944, she
married Albert Kadolph and they farmed at Eldora until 1975, then
moved to the Missouri and Arkansas areas for 17 years. They returned to
Eldora in 1993.
She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and
the Eldora American Legion Auxiliary. She was a former church
organist, played several instruments and enjoyed writing poetry and
music.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene; a sister, Florence Schaper
and husband, John of Iowa Falls; two brothers, Frank Rahfeldt of
Austin, Minnesota and Lee Rahfeldt of Seattle, Washington; two grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; two infant daughters, a daughter, Pamela Glenz; two sisters
and a brother.
The Creps-Abels Funeral Home of Eldora, was in charge of

Calvin Johnson

Calvin "Cal" Johnson, 77, of Eldora, died
on
Thursday, March 14, 2002, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in
Ames.
Services were held on Monday, March 18, at the First
Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock, with burial in the Eastlawn Memory Garden in Eldora. Pastor Alan Steier
officiated. Full military honors were provided by the Walter-Sayer Post
No. 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless No 3974 of the VFW.
Calvin was born on November 3, 1924 in Lawn Hill, to Clint and Florence
Miller Johnson. He attended New Providence Schools until he was a
junior in high school and then moved to Wyoming where he graduated
from high school at Douglas, Wyoming. He served two years in the U.S.
Air Force stationed in Germany and on November 18, 1945, he married Ruth
Allen of Iowa Falls. They made their home in Eldora where he worked
for 16 years for the Chevrolet dealership as an auto mechanic. In
1963, he began employment as an auto mechanics instructor at the Iowa
State Training School for Boys in Eldora. He retired in 1987 but
remained active working on cars.
He was active in the First Baptist
Church in Eldora, where he sang in the choir and taught Sunday School.
For the past 20 years he was a member of the Steamboat Rock First
Baptist Church and was a member of the Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the
American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Susan Quaife and
husband, Pete of Marshalltown; a son, Allen and wife, Deb of
Eldora; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Viola Mecham of Douglas, Wyoming and Mary Lou Shurson and husband, Ray
of Eldon, Missouri; two brothers, Wallace and wife, Mary Lou of
Arlington, Virginia and Kenneth and wife, Arlah of Eldora.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and two brothers.

Lyle Green

E. Lyle Green, 81, of Hampton, died on Friday,
March 15, 2002, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason
City.
Services were held on Tuesday, March 19, at the Faith
Baptist Church in Hampton, with burial in the Hampton
Cemetery. Rev. Steve Anderson officiated.
Lyle was born on March 17, 1920 in Franklin County, to Frank and Ona
Green. He was educated in the Geneva Schools and on January 18, 1948, he
married Wanda Holroyd at Hampton. He was a farmer and an Electrolux
service and repair dealer. He was an active member of the Faith
Baptist Church, a member of the Franklin County Christian Society and
enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by his son, Merlin Green and wife, Becky of Geneva;
and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife, Wanda; and a grandson.

Evelyn Rosine

Evelyn Marzell Rosine, 73, of Eldora, died on Saturday, March
16, 2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services will be held on Thursday, March 21, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Eldora, with burial in the Eldora City Cemetery.
Pastor David Splett will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7:00
p.m., on Wednesday, with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.
Evelyn was born on September 10, 1928 in McGehee, Arkansas, to Claude and Molly
Miles Lindsey. On September 22, 1945, she married Donald Rosine in
Alexandria, Louisiana. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, the
Mary Mission Circle, the Fellowship Club and the Legion Auxiliary.
Evelyn enjoyed sewing.
She is survived by her husband, Donald; a son, George Rosine of
Eldora; two daughters, Rita Balvanz and husband, Lonnie of Eldora
and Anita Eggleston and husband, Allan of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; five
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Louise James and
husband, Eugene; a brother, James Lindsey; and a step-brother, Wayne
Ford and wife, Cynthia, all of Pineville, Louisiana.

Helen Marie Studer, 83, of Hampton, died on Sunday, March 17,
2002, at the Sheffield Care Center.
Services will be held on Thursday,
March 21, at 11:00 a.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton,
with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Bradford. Rev. Jerry
Miller will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the service time at
the funeral home.
Helen was born on March 2, 1919 at Geneva, to John and Pauline Aldinger
Huntbatch. She graduated from the Geneva High School and Iowa State
Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On June 26, 1941, she married
Kenneth Jacob Studer in Iowa Falls. She taught in country schools
and was a homemaker. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and cooking.
She is survived by a son, Keith Studer and wife, Linda of Hampton;
a daughter, Barbara Studer of Altoona; a brother, Fred Huntbatch of
Geneva; a sister, Alice Sanders of Castle Rock, Colorado; four
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband; and two brothers.

Lois Arlene Selene, 80, of Hampton, died on
Sunday, March 17, 2002, at the Sun City Health Hospice Care
Center in Peoria, Arizona, following emergency surgery for an
aortic aneurysm on March 4.
Services will be held on Saturday,
March 23, at 10:30 a.m., at the Hampton United Methodist
Church, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Jerry
Miller will officiate. Visitation will be on Friday, March 22,
from 4-8:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.
Lois was born on May 12, 1921 in Des Moines, to Robert and Audrey Redfern Halferty. She graduated from
the Roosevelt High School and AIB
Business College in Des Moines. On September 20, 1942, she married
Werner Selene Jr. and in 1953 they moved to Hampton. Lois was a
member of the United Methodist Church, Treble Clef, National TTT,
Society-Iowa CO., Order of Eastern Star No. 77, Franklin County
Hospital Auxiliary and is a Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Fellow.
She was previously employed by the Hobson & Cady Law Firm and Selene
Insurance Agency. She was a church organist and played for many
weddings and funerals the past 40 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Dianna May and husband, Steve of
Lincoln, Nebraska; a son, Alan Selene and wife, Mary Beth of Madison,
Wisconsin; a brother, Robert Halferty of Valentine, Nebraska; a
brother-in-law, Jim Selene and wife, Marian of Jefferson; four
grandchildren; a step-grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Werner in 1999.

Maynard Chance

Maynard Chance, 92, formerly of New
Providence, died on Sunday, March 17, 2002, at the Hubbard Care
Center.
Services will be held on Friday, March 22, at 11:00
a.m., at the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church, with
burial in the New Providence Cemetery. Revs. Arlen Daleske and Lloyd McDonald will officiate.
Visitation will be one hour before the services at the church.
Maynard was born on January 1, 1910, on a farm south of New Providence, to
Thomas and Iza Reece Chance. He graduated from New Providence in
1928 and took a Dairy Improvement Course at Iowa State College and
did cow testing in central and eastern Iowa. From 1938-1941 he
served as Secretary of Agriculture for the Des Moines Chamber of
Commerce. On September 18, 1938, he married Della Danielson in Des
Moines. They farmed in the Ogden area for ten years, moving back to
New Providence in 1945. He ran a cafe in New Providence and
Maynard's Motor Service until retiring in 1970. During this time he
served as mayor for seven years and on the school board for six
years. He was a member of the Hardin County Crime Commission, Hardin
County Solid Waste Commission and part-time Hardin County Defense
Director.
He is survived by two sons, John and wife, Jessica of West Des
Moines and Ed and wife, Emma of Council Bluffs; a daughter, Judy Kilzer of Eldridge; five grandsons; and two great-grandsons.

Alvin Brocka

Alvin Marion Brocka, 83, of Parkersburg, died on
Saturday, March 23, 2002, at the Ravenwood Nursing Center in Waterloo.
Services were held on Tuesday, March 26, at the Hitesville Gospel Hall
in rural Aplington, with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg.
Robert Orr officiated. Memorials may be directed to the Hitesville
Gospel Hall.
Alvin was born on January 1, 1919 in Butler County, near Allison, to Otto
and Mary Endelman Brocka. He attended country school and on September
22, 1942, he married Grace Groen in the Little Brown Church at
Nashua. They farmed for 19 years in the Bristow-Dumont area and then
moved to Parkersburg. He worked for John Deere in Waterloo for 24
years, retiring in 1983. He attended the Hitesville Gospel Hall and
enjoyed nature, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by two brothers, his twin, Alfred Brocka of Cedar
Falls and Lavern of Allison; four sisters, Gladys Hinders, Esther
Schmidt, both of Allison, Susan Bruns of Clarksville and Marvel
Landers of Greene; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Harry, Floyd and
Melvin Brocka; and an infant brother, Ernest.
The Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Parkersburg, was in charge of

Chris E. Horton Sr.

Chris E. Horton Sr., 48, of Eldora, died on Saturday, March 23,
2002, at his home in Eldora.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m.,
on
Wednesday, March 27, at the Biersborn Funeral Home in Union, with burial
in the Hauser Cemetery at Whitten. Rev. David Splett of the St. Paul's
Lutheran Church will officiate. Memorials may be directed to the
Chris E. Horton Memorial Fund.
Chris was born on December 2, 1953 in Ottumwa, to Lyle and Romenta Webster
Horton Sr. He grew up in the Hampton and Hubbard areas, graduating
from the Hubbard High School in 1972. On March 17, 1973, he married
Linda Rosine in Gifford. He was an experienced truck driver, driving
for many years for Gast Ready Mix in Eldora and most recently for
Concrete Incorporated of Marshalltown/Iowa Falls. He had also worked
for Whink Products in Eldora in maintenance.
He enjoyed bowling on
the Monday night leagues in Eldora; fishing, hunting, camping and
motor sports. He especially enjoyed classic car shows.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of Eldora; two sons, Chris and
wife, Peggy of Iowa Falls and Michael and wife, Tonya of
Marshalltown; a daughter, Trisha Cole and husband, Roy of Eldora;
two brothers, Dean Horton of Hayesville and Wayne Horton of
Muskegon, Michigan; a sister, Elaine Nicholson of Sigourney; two
stepbrothers, Bob Fetters of Eldora and James Catherwood of
Missouri; and one grandson, Williamray Cole.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; his stepmother, Betty Catherwood; and a
brother, Lyle Horton Jr.

Mildred Mendenhall

Mildred Mendenhall, 83, of New Providence, died of cancer on
Sunday, March 24, 2002, at the Israel Family Hospice House in
Ames.
Services were held on Tuesday, March 26, at the Honey
Creek New Providence Church, with Rev. Arlen Daleske and Rev. Lloyd McDonald
officiating. Funeral services will also be held on Wednesday, March 27,
at 1:30 p.m., at the Pleasant Plain Friends Church, with burial in
the Friends
Cemetery at Pleasant Plain. Memorials may be directed to the Quakerdale
Children's Home in New Providence.
Mildred was born on June 8, 1918 near Pleasant Plain, to C. Everett
and Alice Jones Coffin. She graduated from the Pleasant Plain High
School in 1935 and from William Penn College in 1940. On November 27,
1941, she married Herschel Mendenhall and they adopted a son,
Russell, when he was nine years old. He lost his life in an
automobile accident when he was a teenager. She taught school and
when her husband was serving in Civilian Public Service she worked
as a secretary in hospitals. She assisted her husband in pastorates
at smaller churches and as business manager of William Penn College.
They served in the Friends African Mission in Kenya from 1958-61,
then returned to farm in the Pleasant Plain area until retiring in
1993, when they moved to the Quakerdale campus at New Providence.
Mildred was a member of the New Providence Friends Church.
She is survived by her husband, Herschel of New
Providence; a sister, Mabel Irving of Merrill, Wisconsin and a brother, Earl Coffin
and wife, Frances of Fairfield.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her son, Russell in 1965; two brothers, Albert and Glen;
and two sisters, Edith and Bertha.
The Biersborn Funeral Home of Union, is in charge of

Donna Meyer

Donna M. Meyer, 71, of Wellsburg, died on Sunday, March 24,
2002, at her home.
Following cremation, memorial services
will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, March 29 at the United
Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with burial to follow in the First
Christian Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Wellsburg.
Military rites will be provided by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and
the American Legion Post No. 213. There
will be no visitation.
Donna was born on April 25, 1930 near Wellsburg, to Siebe and Nantje
Riekena Meyer. She graduated from the Wellsburg High School in 1947. In
1952, she enlisted in the United States Army and served as a WAC
during the Korean War in occupied Japan. After her discharge in
1957, she worked for the government in Washington, D.C., then the
Department of Health Services. In 1960, she moved to Kansas City,
Missouri and continued to work for the DHS retiring in 1985, when she
moved back to Wellsburg.
Donna was instrumental in helping set up
the Wellsburg Historical Society House and working with senior
citizens. She was a member of the Wellsburg Community Betterment
Group and attended church at the United Reformed Church. She
enjoyed watching baseball.
She is survived by three sisters, Minnie Taffinder-Harlan of
Wellsburg, Eva Widmann of Mesa, Arizona and Clareen Baehr and
husband, Robert of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers,
Clarence, Edward and Harley Meyer; and three sisters, Gertie DeNeui,
Freda Boelman and Clara Meyer.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg, is in charge of

Erlis Lemley

Erlis "Butch" Lemley, 87, of Kalona, a former
resident of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at
the
Rosewood Nursing Home in St. Charles, Illinois.
Services will be
held on Friday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m., at the St. Luke's Episcopal Church
in Cedar Falls, with burial in the Sharon Hill Cemetery at Kalona.
Erlis was born on October 24, 1914 in Kalona, to Lewis and Nellie
Marsh Lemley. He graduated from Kalona in 1933 and on June 8,
1941, he married Joyce Nielsen in Iowa Falls. He was employed
as a printer with the Iowa Falls Citizen from 1941-49 and
later worked at the Waterloo Courier until retiring in 1977.
He also owned and operated a gun shop.
He was a member of the St.
Luke's Episcopal Church in Cedar Falls and was an avid golfer
and fisherman.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Narveson and her
husband, Brian of Webum, Illinois; three grandchildren; and a
brother, Keith Lemley of Pamell.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; his wife, Joyce on June 3, 2001; one brother;
and one sister.

at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls. Burial
will be in the Hazel Green
Cemetery, rural Ackley, Iowa. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m.,
until the services at the funeral home.

Harm Ubben, 93, of Dumont, died on Thursday, March 28,
2002, at the Dumont Care Center.
Services were held on Monday,
April 1, at the Dumont Reformed Church, with burial in the
Dumont Cemetery. Rev. Bob Scholten officiated.
Harm was born on February 11, 1909 in Butler County, to Henry and
Gertrude Brinkman Ubben. He attended Butler County country
schools and on May 5, 1934, he married Marlys Hearn in
Hampton. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Dumont
Reformed Church.
He is survived by two sons, Wayne and wife, Verla of Cedar
Falls and Robert and wife, Janet of Sioux City; a daughter,
Karen Elkin and husband, Dennis of Mesa, Arizona; a sister,
Jennie Maifield of Hampton; six grandchildren; and 13
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Henry, Chris
and Rube; and a sister, Maria.

Jerry Leroy DeWitt, 62, of San Diego, California, died on
Thursday, March 28,
2002.
Graveside memorial services will be held
on Saturday,
April 13, at 1:00 p.m., in the Friends Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Jerry was born on January 29, 1940, to Miriam and Everett DeWitt. Jerry
worked and lived many places but has spent the last 12 years in San
Diego. He worked for the county at San Diego as an accountant and
enjoyed working on a computer.
He is survived by a daughter, Leilani Anderson of Sumner; three
grandchildren; four brothers, Jim of Waukee, Clifford of
Independence, Missouri, Dale of Farmington and Richard of Victoria,
Texas; three sisters, Sandra Walsh of El Cajon, California, Nancy Janke
of Norfolk, Virginia and Kathy Falcon of Houston, Texas; his mother,
Miriam Reyes of Fort Madison; and his father, Everett DeWitt of
Farmington.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Joe DeWitt.

Marie O'Hare

Marie O'Hare, 90, of Ackley, died on Friday,
March 29, 2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa
Falls.
Services were held on Monday, April 1, at the St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Ackley, with burial in the church
cemetery. Father Jim Miller officiated.
Marie was born on May 7, 1911 in St. Paul, Nebraska, to Thomas and
Alice Mulloy Stout. She graduated from the St. Paul High School
and on February 10, 1931, she married Clarence O'Hare in St. Paul.
She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Altar
Society, Ackley Garden Club, Jolly Elders and congregate
meals.
She is survived by two daughters, Rosemary Olsen of Alden and
Alice Off of West Covina, California; two sons, William of Perry
and Robert of Ackley; 10 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Stout of St. Paul.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Clarence; four sisters; and a brother.

Marvin Ayers

Marvin Gene Ayers, 74, of Aplington, died on
Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls, of
complications from a stroke.
Services were held on Tuesday, April
2, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Aplington, with burial
in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington.
Marvin was born on July 24, 1927 at Aredale, to Paul and Maxine
Dye Ayers. He attended school through the eleventh grade. On
January 8, 1946, he married Inez Haan at the Little Brown Church
at Nashua. He worked in concrete construction and small engine
business working for Willeki and Sons Engine Repair and the
Parkersburg Lumber Co. His hobbies were reading and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Inez of Aplington; a son, Craig
Ayers of Aplington; two daughters, Suzanne Geerdes and
husband, Terry of Waterloo and Barbra Kluiter and husband,
Jim of Shell Rock; five grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; his mother, Maxine Ayers of Aredale; two
brothers, Robert Ayers and wife, Darlene and Kenneth Ayers
and wife, Sheryl, both of Dumont; two sisters, Betty Swieter
and husband, LaVerne of Geneva and Sharon Folken and
husband, Wayne of Waterloo.

Cheryl "Cher" Rider, 57, of Blue Grass, died
on
Saturday, March 30, 2002, in Blue Grass.
Services will be
held on Wednesday, April 3, at 10:00 a.m., at the Walcott Methodist
Church, with burial in the Blue Grass Cemetery. Memorials may
be directed to the American Cancer Society.
Cheryl was born on July 22, 1944 in Mason City, to Rudy and
Marvel Brodrecht Hansen. She married Hal Rider on May 9, 1964
in Cedar Falls. She was owner and broker of ReMax Suburban in
Blue Grass. She belonged to the Davenport-Bettendorf Women's
Bowling Association since 1969 and became a director in 1984.
She served on many state and national bowling associations and
was appointed director of the National Women's International
Bowling Congress in 2000.
She is survived by her husband, Hal of Blue Grass; a son, Tim
Rider and wife, Jo of Iowa Falls; a daughter, Chris Rider and
partner, Karen Eichler of Iowa City; a sister, Bonnie
Marshall and husband, Howard of Nora Springs; her mother and
father-in-law, Ed and Hazel Rider of Mission, Texas; and an
aunt, Melva Butts of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; and an aunt, Delita Kendrew.

Valda Dougan

Valda M. Dougan, 72, of Iowa Falls, died
on
Saturday, March 30, 2002, at her home in Iowa Falls.
Services
were held on Tuesday, April 2, at the First United Methodist
Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Cottage Cemetery,
rural Iowa Falls. Rev. Gerald Caquelin officiated.
Valda was born on April 27, 1929 in Ackley, to John and Lula Rops. She graduated from
the Ackley High School in 1946 and from
Iowa State Teachers College. On February 16, 1950, she married Arlo Dougan at the Christian Reformed Church at Austinville.
She taught country schools in Grundy County for three years
and was a substitute teacher in Iowa Falls from 1965-71. She
founded the Iowa Falls Day Care Center in Iowa Falls in 1971
and ran it until retiring in 2000. She was co-founder of the
Breast Cancer Support Group in Iowa Falls.
Valda was a member
of the Ellis United Methodist Church, UMW, Business and
Professional Women of Iowa Falls, Community Chest and
the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, Larry of Iowa Falls and Tom and
wife, Josie of Madison Lake, Minnesota; a daughter, Connie Dougan
of Iowa Falls; two grandchildren, Jack and Mackenzie Dougan of
Madison Lake; four sisters, JoAnn Beving and husband, Gene
and Betty Harken and husband, Don, all of Ackley, Mary Ascher
and husband, Junior of Wellsburg and Frances Hook and
husband, Floyd of Maryville, Missouri; two brothers, Marvin Rops
and wife, Jeanette of Cedar Rapids and Dennis Rops and wife,
LaDonna of Aplington.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Arlo; an infant brother; a
sister-in-law, Verla Rops; and a niece, Tresa Rops.
The
Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls, was in charge of
