Verlynn Willms

Verlynn A. Willms, 53, of Sioux City and formerly of
Ackley, died following a motorcycle accident on Monday, July 1,
2002, in Sioux City.
Memorial services were
held on Wednesday, July 3, at the
Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Funeral services were
Friday, July 5, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ackley, with
burial in the Northlawn Memory Gardens in Iowa Falls. Susan Cluts
and Diane Martin officiated at the service. Military rites were
conducted by the Elliott-Keninger Post No. 252 of Ackley.
Verlynn was born on September 12, 1948 in Iowa Falls, to Vernon and Velma
Lord Willms. He graduated from the Ackley-Geneva High School and
enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Thailand during the
Vietnam War. On April 28, 1984, he married Lynda Schoeneman Drilling
at Ackley. They moved to Sioux City in 1987. Verlynn was a truck
driver for over 20 years and most recently was an owner-operator for
Mid-Continent Trucking in Denison. He enjoyed cooking, motorcycle
riding, jazz and blues music.
Survivors include his wife, Lynda of Sioux City; a son, Jason and
his wife, Courtney of Iowa Falls; three daughters, Tara and her
husband, Mike Bonewitz of Keystone, Lisa of Ackley and Nicole and
her husband, Alex Punte of Iowa Falls; his parents, Vernon and
Velma Willms of Ackley; two stepsons, Steve Drilling of Clovis,
California and Ken Drillings and his wife, Angela of Raleigh, North Carolina; a
sister, Vicki and her husband, Arlen Harken of Ackley; three
brothers, Vaughn and his wife, Elaine of Ackley, Vince and his
wife, Cathy of Belmond and Van and his wife, Deb of Ackley; 10
grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

July 4, 2002, at the Allen Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be
held on
Monday, July 8, at 10:00 a.m., at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, with
burial in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, both in Holland. Visitation
will be on Sunday from 3-7:00 p.m., at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home
in Parkersburg. Memorials may be directed toward the family.

Betty A. Owings

Betty A. Owings, 78, of Eldora, died on Tuesday, July 2,
2002, at the Valley View Nursing Center in Eldora.
Funeral services will be
held on Saturday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Eldora, with Pastor David Spleet
officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn Memory Garden in Eldora. Visitation will be
on Saturday, at the
church from 9:00 a.m. until the service time. A memorial fund has been
established.
Betty was born on June 20, 1924 in Eldora, to Otto H. and Minnie A. Teske Rosine. She was raised in Eldora and graduated from
the Eldora
High School in 1941. On March 28, 1943, Betty was united in marriage
to Martin "Lew" Owings in Seattle, Washington. While in Seattle, Betty
worked at Douglas Aircraft. In 1947, they moved to Eldora where she
worked at the Infant Seat Company for a number of years. Later she
was employed at Dodger Industries until retirement in 1989. Betty
was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald and his wife, Cec of Iowa City,
Dennis and his wife, Kathleen of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and David of
Eldora; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Richard Rosine of
Eldora, Don "Shorty" Rosine of Eldora and Arthur Rosine and his
wife, Wanda of Webster City; and a sister, Doris Kallem and her
husband, Merlin of Eldora.
The

Thelma Nicolet

Thelma Pauline Nicolet, 94, of Des Moines, died on Monday,
July 8, 2002, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Des Moines.
Services were held on
Thursday, July 11, at the Valley View Care Center, with
burial in the Highland Memorial Gardens in Des Moines.
Thelma was born on July 31, 1907 at St. Sebald, to Carl and Pauline
Fliehler Schuchman. She attended the Cedar Falls Teachers College and on
March 25, 1934, she married Roy Nicolet of Iowa Falls. They lived in
Iowa Falls where their two sons, Charles and Douglas were born. Both
sons graduated from the Iowa Falls High School.
Thelma is survived by two sons, Charles of
Naperville, Illinois and
Douglas of Pleasant Hill; five grandchildren; 15
great-grandchildren; three nephews, Lyle Campbell, James Campbell
and John Campbell; and three nieces, Jeanne Kastendick, Miriam Renaud
and Ruth Brinkmeyer, all from the Iowa Falls area.

June Madeleine Chamberlain, 77, of Hubbard, died of cardiac
arrest on Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at the Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services will be held on
Saturday, July 13, at 2:00 p.m., at the Zion United Church
of Christ in Hubbard, with burial in the Hubbard Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Hubbard Main Street
Initiative.
June was born on September 20, 1924 in Hubbard, to Millard and Berdine
Flowers Andrews. At the age of 12, her family moved to Seligman,
Missouri, where she graduated from high school and attended the Drones
Business College. On December 24, 1946, she married George Chamberlain
and they later moved to Iowa where George was engaged in farming.
They retired into Hubbard in 1997.
She enjoyed gardening, canning
and crossword puzzles. She and her husband enjoyed a trip to Hawaii
for their 50th wedding anniversary.
She is survived by her husband, George; four children, George Jr.
and wife, Carolyn of Wilson, Oklahoma, Collette Lindeman and husband,
Anthony of Keokuk, James and wife, Christine of Durham, North Carolina and
Kimberly McDowall and husband, Garry of Oxford, Mississippi; 14
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, David Andrews
of Eldora.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother,
Dean; and a sister, Hildred Andrews.
The

Robert Klein

Robert F. Klein, 83, of Sacramento, California, died on
Saturday, July 10, 2002, at his home.
Services were held on
Friday, July 16, at the South East Lawn Mortuary Chapel in
Elk Grove, California, with burial in the South East Lawn
Memorial Park.
Robert was born on April 26, 1919 at Alden, to Ferdinand and Augusta
Lange Klein. He was confirmed at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in
Alden, attended rural Shepherd School and Alden High School. At age
21 he was drafted into the United States Air Force and served from
1940-62. On June 25, 1942, he married Elvira Kuns at her parents'
home in Iowa Falls. After his discharge from the Air Force he was
employed as plant manager for the Sacramento School District, a
position he held until retiring in 1982.
He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Wells and husband, Richard; a
granddaughter, Nicole Wells, all of Sacramento; five sisters, Edna
Sanders, Lillian Locke, Doris Rieks and husband, Maynard, all of Iowa
Falls, Esther Pfeffer of Cedar Rapids and Irene Richards and
husband, Lee of Webster City; one brother, Irvin (Bud) and wife, Mavis
of Iowa Falls; two sisters-in-law, Irene Klein of Iowa Falls and
Florence Klein of Alden; and many nieces and nephews.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elvira; an infant son;
two sisters, Anna Kastendick and Elsa Klein; and five brothers,
Fred, Paul, Frank, Walter and Herman Klein.

Ronald Witt

Ronald L. Witt, 52, of Des Moines, died at his home of a
liver ailment on Thursday, July 11, 2002.
Services were held at
Hamilton's Near Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines, on
Monday, July 15, with burial in the Highland Memory Garden
Cemetery.
Ronald was born on November 6, 1949 in Des Moines, to Arlene Lear and
Walter Witt. He lived all his life in Des Moines and served in the
United States Marines. He worked as a diesel parts man for
Interstate Detroit Diesel of Altoona. He was married to Elna A. "Georgie"
Witt and they lived in Des Moines.
He is survived by his wife; his mother, Arlene Witt; a son, Ronald
Witt Jr.; a daughter, Melissa; a stepson, Wayne Harrison Jr., all of
Des Moines; a twin brother, Randel of Iowa Falls; a sister, Kelly
Phipps of Pleasantville; and six grandchildren.

Eva Mae Olsen

Eva Mae Olsen Kincaid, 83, of Houston, Texas, died on
Thursday, July 11, 2002, at the Memorial Southwest Hospital
in Houston.
There was no funeral
service and burial was in the Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery,
Little Rock, Arkansas, beside her husband.
Eva was born on September 13, 1918 in Alden, to Amon S. Olsen and Hazel Mae
Marrow. She was raised in Alden and graduated from the Alden High
School. She worked in the Princess Cafe in Iowa Falls and attended
business school in Chillicothe, Missouri, where she met her husband. On
May 12, 1941, she married Silas Russell Kincaid. He was in the
trucking business and the family moved often. They spent their final
30 years in Arkansas. Eva enjoyed returning to Alden for her class
reunions, the last one being her 60th reunion.
Survivors include her son, William Olsen and wife, Janice of Houston;
a grandson, William M. Olsen of Houston; a sister, Mary Ann Isley
of California; four nephews (sons of the late Ruth and Vic Warner
former of Iowa Falls.)
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; her uncle and aunt, Ray and Anna Warner formerly of Alden;
her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Vic Warner formerly of Iowa
Falls.

heart ailment on Thursday, July 11, 2002.

burial in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Madrid. Visitation will be on Sunday, from
2-5:0 p.m.
Lewis was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and had lived in Granger for 66
years. He was a retired farmer and enjoyed sporting events.
He is
survived by a son, Duane of Aplington; a daughter, Rosalene Scott
of Granger; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Yusta.

Charlotte was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended Lake Erie
Women's College in New York and was a member of the Stuart Yacht and
Country Club. She had been a resident of Stuart since 1972 when she
moved from Chappaqua, New York.
Survivors include a son, John A. Spencer and his wife, Helen of Shrewsburg, New Jersey; and two granddaughters.

Mary Irene Sanders, 80, of Bradford, died on Sunday, July
14, 2002, at her home.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, July 17, at 10:30 a.m., at the Hampton United
Methodist Church, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev.
Jerry Miller will officiate.
Mary was born on October 31, 1921 in Ingham Township, Franklin County, to
Arthur and Evelyn Schuler Scarrow. She attended the Hansell School and
on August 19, 1939, she married Horace Craig. He died in a farm
accident on August 5, 1943 and they had two children, William and
Mary Jo. On June 12, 1948, she married W. D. "Bill" Sanders in
Chapin. They had two children, Randall and LaVerne.
She was a member of
the Hampton Methodist Church and the Bradford Methodist Church,
where she served as a Sunday School teacher for 16 years and
Superintendent for 14 years. She was a newspaper reporter for the
Hampton Chronicle, Ackley World Journal and the Iowa Falls
Times-Citizen newspapers for many years. Mary was a Studio Girl
representative, a Salvation Army volunteer, loved to cook and bake
cookies and pies, and make noodles. She enjoyed quilting, sewing,
playing cards and was an avid sports fan for all her family's
activities.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; a son, Bill and wife, Shirley;
a daughter, Mary Jo; and a son, Randy and wife, Sherry, all of
Bradford; a son, Verne and wife, Diane of Hampton; a brother, Lyle Scarrow and wife, Elsie of Dumont; three sisters-in-law, Elva Scarrow of Mason City, Iva Scarrow
of Minneapolis, Minnesota and
Mildred Craig of Mason City; 11 grandchildren; and 12
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
first husband; two brothers, Floyd and Ed; a sister, Mona Wilson; a
son-in-law, Roney Mulford; and a grandson, Tony Johnson.

Viola Kalkwarf

Viola Mae Kalkwarf, 72, of Aplington, died on Sunday, July
14, 2002, at the Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.
Services were
held on Thursday, July 18, at the First Reformed Church in Aplington,
with burial in the Bethel Reformed Cemetery, Aplington. Rev. Harlan DeJong officiated.
Viola was born on June 30, 1930 near Ackley, to Fred and Lizzie Lupkes
Essman. She graduated from the Ackley High School in 1948 and was
employed as a teller at the Iowa State Bank in Kesley. On September 17,
1965, she married John Kalkwarf at the Washington Reformed Church
near Ackley. They farmed north of Kesley until moving to Aplington
in 1985.
She was a member of the Washington Reformed Church where
she taught Sunday School, was a member of UPW and sang in the choir. She
was a member of the Aplington Women's Club, the Auxiliary of the
Gideons and was chairman of the local blood drive. Her hobbies were
attending auctions and making quilts.
She is survived by her husband; a stepson, Keith Kalkwarf and wife,
Virginia of Aplington; two stepdaughters, Marcella Rewerts and
husband, Ervin of Aplington and Barbara Renken and husband, Leland of
West Concord, Minnesota; seven step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Essman, Esther Maifeld and
Pearl Essman, all of Ackley.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; and an infant sister and brother.

Darwin Whipple

Darwin Max Whipple, 54, of Paton, died on Monday, July 15,
2002, at his home.
Services were held on
Friday, July 19, at the Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson,
with graveside rites in the Northlawn Memory
Gardens in Iowa Falls.
Darwin was born on July 24, 1947 in Hampton, to Lorenzo (Bud) and
Viola Bonin Whipple. He attended school in Alden. He served in the
U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri
and Germany. During his time in the Army he received his GED. Darwin
married Bonnie Dugan and they were parents of four children, Darwin,
Angela, David and Regina. He later married Jean Pollock and they
were parents of one son, Douglas. Darwin was married to Karri
Yeichert for a time. He had farmed in Greene County and was a heavy
equipment mechanic, working for Becker Gravel in Stratford when he
became ill. Darwin enjoyed cars, racing, collecting model cars,
bowling, fishing, camping and garage sales.
He is survived by three sons, Darwin and wife, Nici of Adel, David and
wife, Stacey of Indianola and Doug and wife, Celli of Jefferson; two
daughters, Angela Chapman of Des Moines and Gina Whipple of Gowrie;
two brothers, Jerry Whipple and wife, Pam of Hampton and Verlin
Whipple of Hampton; a sister, Lori and husband, Todd Mensing of
Coulter; 17 grandchildren; and a special friend, Jan Black of
Jefferson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Rev. Joe Jones officiated.
Betty was born on June 30, 1927 in Iowa Falls, to Ralph Bruce and Marie Kiley Thornton. She graduated from
the Iowa Falls High School and on
June 8, 1947, married Robert Whitesell in Iowa Falls. She owned and
operated the Federal Cafe in Hampton and was a member of the First
Christian Church in Hampton. She enjoyed cooking, candle wicking,
walking, gardening and drives to the country.
She is survived by a daughter, Debra Allison and husband, Stanley of
Hampton; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister; a
stepsister; a stepbrother; and one niece.

Elizabeth Van Weelden

Elizabeth Terpstra Van Weelden, 99, of Ackley, died on
Thursday, July 18, 2002, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, where
she had been a resident since 1989.
Services were held on Monday, July
22, at the Lynnville Friends Church in Lynnville, with burial in the
Sully Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Presbyterian
Village at Ackley.
Elizabeth was born on April 4, 1903 in the Lynnville-Sully Area, to
Jacob and Cornelia Baarda Kuiper. On August 12, 1924, she married
George Terpstra and he died on February 14, 1944. She married Arie Van
Weelden on March 24, 1959.
She is survived by a son, Ralph Terpstra and wife, Bessie of Ackley;
four grandsons and their wives; 11 great-grandchildren; two
great-great grandchildren; two stepdaughters, DeLoris Van Weelden
Wallace and husband, Dale of Estero, Florida and Diana Van Weelden Agan
and husband, Dale of Newton; a stepdaughter-in-law, Merryll Van
Weelden of Pleasant Hill; and many step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Sully Garden Chapel Funeral Home.

Harold A. Johnson, 81, of Hampton, died on Friday, July 19,
2002, at the Hampton Care Center.
The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral
Home of Hampton and the Bayview Funeral home of Albert Lea, Minnesota, were in
charge of the arrangements. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery in
Albert Lea.
Harold was born on August 30, 1920 at Dodge Center, Minnesota, to Henry and
Ethel Clark Johnson. He was educated in the Dodge Center Schools and
served in the United States Army from 1942-54. On November 16, 1946,
he married Dorothy Yennie in West Concorde, Minnesota. After his
discharge he did road maintenance for the State of Minnesota.
He was
a Methodist and a member of the VFW and DAV. He enjoyed drinking coffee
with friends, fishing, hunting and camping in his younger years.
He is survived by a son, David of Denver, Iowa; a daughter, Shirley Hert and husband, Edward Sr. of Hampton; one sister and five
brothers and their wives all of Minnesota; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister; six
brothers; and a grandson.

Jennie Eilderts

Jennie Eilderts, 89, of Aplington, died on Friday, July 19,
2002, at her home.
Services were held on Tuesday, July 23, at the First
Reformed Church in Aplington, with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery,
Aplington. Rev. Harlan DeJong officiated.
Jennie was born on January 26, 1913 in Grundy County, to Henry and Tena
Schulte Johnson. She was educated in the Aplington Schools and on
February 6, 1932, married Dick Eilderts at the First Reformed Church
Parsonage in Aplington. They farmed near Parkersburg and after her
husband's death in 1968, she went to work for Maple Manor at
Aplington where she worked until retiring in 1979.
She was a member
of the First Reformed Church and an active member of the Women's
Guild. She enjoyed gardening, collecting tea cups and traveling,
especially on bus trips.
She is survived by a son, Marvin and wife, Mildred of Parkersburg;
three daughters, Viola Lanam and husband, Ken of Scottsdale, Arizona,
Delores Jungling and husband, Ted of Aplington and Beverly Busch and
husband, Wendell of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; two sisters,
Henrietta Schipp and Marjorie Collins, both of Waterloo; and a
sister-in-law, Tillie Johnson of Ackley.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband; a grandchild; two brothers; and two
sisters.

Iva Boddy

Iva Clara Boddy, 92, of Hubbard, died on Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the
Hubbard Care Center.
Services were held on Tuesday, July 23, at
the Boeke
Funeral Home in Hubbard, with burial in the Hubbard Cemetery. Rev.
Harry Imlay officiated.
Iva was born on August 18, 1909 at Colo, to Franklin and Lena Reingardt
Etnier. She attended the Colo Community School, graduated from Ellsworth
Community College and taught rural schools at Colo and Iowa Falls.
On June 24, 1931, she married Clarence Boddy and they lived in Iowa
Falls before moving to Kansas where she did factory sewing during
World War II. In 1959, they moved to Florida to make their home and
Iva moved to Hubbard in 1997.
She is survived by two sisters, Pauline Maisel of Hubbard and Alice
Lageschulte of Waverly; and several nieces and nephews.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1995; and three
sisters, Mabel Squires, Alma Orth and Mary Lageschulte.

Lyle Knutson, 81, of Garden City, died of cancer on Sunday,
July 21, 2002, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Wednesday, July 24, at the Stavenger Lutheran

Lyle was born on December 18, 1920, to Edward and Sadie Hills Knutson. He
graduated from the Radcliffe High School in 1939 and served three years
in the United States Army 9th Air Corps during World War II. While
he was in the service he married Betty Wymore on October 14, 1943 in
Denver, Colorado. When he returned from service they farmed his parents
farm for two years before moving into Garden City. He worked as a
carpenter, then operated a grocery store in Garden City and Zearing.
When he retired he was working for Swift Packing.
He was a member of the Stavenger Lutheran Church in Garden City and the American Legion
Post No. 317 in Radcliffe.
He is survived by a brother-in-law, Ronald Wymore and wife, Marilyn
of Waterloo; along with many other relatives and friends.

Nettie Brower

Nettie Brower, 92, of Sioux Center, died on Monday, July 22,
2002.
Services were held on
Wednesday, July 24, at the Covenant Christian Reformed
Church in Sioux Center, with burial in the Grant Center
Township Cemetery, rural Hampton.
Nettie was born on December 1, 1910 in Grundy County, to Peter and Grace Ruter. She graduated from
the Wellsburg High School in 1928 and on November
30, 1938, she married Henry Brower at Wellsburg. They began farming
at Hampton, farmed for nine years at Wellsburg and then moved south
of Hampton where they lived until 1992. They retired to Sioux Center
but spent their winters in Mission, Texas. Nettie taught Sunday
School for many years and participated in ladies organizations. Her
hobbies were birds and flowers and playing games of any type.
She is survived by her husband, Henry of Sioux Center; a son, Joel
and wife, Jean of Byron Center, Minnesota; a daughter, Jerelyn Schelhaas
and husband, Dave of Sioux Center; five grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a
sister, Jessie; and two brothers, Herman and James Ruter.

Ilene Fry

Ilene L. Fry, 72, of New Providence, died on Wednesday, July
24, 2002, at the Colonial Manor in Zearing.
Services were held on
Tuesday, July 30, at the Chester Friends Church, rural
Union, with burial in the Chester Church Center. Pastor
Linda Lighthall of the
Zearing Christian Church officiated.
Ilene was born on January 2, 1930 in Pella, to Emory and Nellie Jones
Dunn. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines in 1947 and
on October 26, 1949, she married Donald Fry in Des Moines. They lived
in California and Ontario for 40 years. She was employed for 21
years at Owens Brockway Glass in Pamona, California. Ilene retired in
June 1990 and moved to New Providence where they had resided the
past 10 years.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Vickie Suarez and
husband, George of New Providence; a son, Donald Frye Jr. of Apple
Valley, California; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Cheryl; and
two brothers, Ralph and Hugh.
The

Hjalmar Leerberg

Hjalmar Leerberg, 83, of Story City, passed away after an
extended illness on Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Israel Family
Hospice House, Ames.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m.,
on
Tuesday, July 30, at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Radcliffe, of
which he was a member. Burial will be in the Tipton Norwegian Lutheran
Cemetery, seven miles northwest of Hubbard, near the Leerberg farm.
Visitation will be on Monday, from 4-8:00 p.m., with the family
present from 6-8:00 p.m., at the Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe.
For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the
church, Israel Family Hospice House or your choice.
Hjalmar Leerberg, only son of Christian
"Chris" Leerberg and Dorthea
(Dora) Kahrs Leerberg, was born on December 9, 1918 at the Leerberg
farm, located northwest of Hubbard, adjacent to the road then
commonly referred to as Norwegian Lane.
Hjalmar was baptized by Rev. H.C. Koepke on January 26, 1919 at the
Tipton Norwegian Lutheran Church, located near the Leerberg farm. He
received his education in the Tipton Township country school. Hjalmar was confirmed by
Rev. B. K. Barstad on October 2, 1932, at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church,
Radcliffe.
Mr. Leerberg worked with his parents on the family
farm until he was inducted into the US Army on
February 4, 1942. He was in the first convoy to arrive at Pearl Harbor
on Oahu after the Japanese attack there. With the rank of Sgt. and
stationed at Scofield Barracks, he was in the 580th Signal Air
Warning Bn., attached to the 7th Air Force, where he worked with
communication systems. After three years, eight months in service,
he received his honorable discharge on October 9, 1945. Then he
rejoined his parents in the farming operation.
On August 18, 1946, he married Mavis Linn of Radcliffe, at the Our
Savior's Lutheran Church. Rev. P. L. Mork performed the double ring
ceremony.
Sons, Craig and Gene were born to this union. Much hard labor went
into the farming venture, including the raising of beef and dairy
cattle, chickens, hogs, sheep and ponies.
They moved to Story City, on November 15, 1975, at which time
son, Gene, came to assist with farming.
Hjalmar spent 15 years as a director on the Buckeye Elevator Board,
with three of those years serving as president.
He is survived by his wife, Mavis; two sons, Craig and wife,
Barbara of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Gene and wife, Jayne of Hubbard; one sister, Carolyn and husband, Dr. Robert Fox of Long Beach,
California; and four grandchildren, Christian, Erika, Carrie and Dena Leerberg;
as well as many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1970 and his mother in
1991.
Hjalmar was a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather as
well as an encourager to all of us. He will be sorely missed.

Anna Winters

Anna Margaret Winters, 84, of New Providence, died on
Monday, July 25, 2002, at the Valley View Nursing Home,
Eldora.
Services were held on
Thursday, July 25, at the Chester Friends Church, with
burial in the Chester Cemetery, both at Union.
Anna was born on August 20, 1917 in Page City, Kansas, to William and Emma
Platt Minteer. She moved to the Chester community as a child and
graduated from the Union High School in 1935. On December 8, 1938, she
married Ralph Winters at Greene. They moved to a farm near New
Providence where they lived until retiring to New Providence in
1978. Anna played the organ and had been playing the piano at the
Chester Friends Church until January 2002, when she moved to the Valley
View Nursing Home in Eldora.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Shea of New Providence; a
son, Larry and wife, Barbara of Clarinda; six grandchildren; a
great-granddaughter; and a brother, Lyle Minteer and wife, Bonnie of
Union.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in
1994; an infant daughter; and a brother, Wilson.

George Nicholson

George William Nicholson, 83, of Alden, died on Thursday,
July 25, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Services were held on
Monday, July 29, at the Immanuel Memorial United Church of
Church in Alden, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Rev. Bob
Miller officiated. Military rites were provided by the
Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188 of Iowa Falls.
George was born on May 28, 1919 at Little Cedar, to George and Cora
Bird Nicholson. He attended school at Little Cedar and served in the
United States Army. On November 4, 1941, he married Edna Bessman at
Osage. He worked as a maintenance man for Ralston Purina in Iowa
Falls. George was a member of the Immanuel Memorial Church in Alden
and the Borschel-Schwebke VFW Post No. 8707, Iowa Falls. He enjoyed
camping with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Edna; a son, Duane and wife, Kay of
Alden; a grandson, Jeffrey Nicholson and wife, Anita of Iowa City;
two granddaughters, Julie Reynolds and husband, Robert of Alden and
Jennifer Sievers and husband, Jeff of Norwalk; seven
great-grandchildren; and a brother, Paul Nicholson and wife, Clarice
of Orchard.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters;
two brothers; and a baby brother.
The

Jessie McCullough

Jessie Marie McCullough, 90, of Hampton, died on Friday,
July 26, 2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa
Falls.
Services were held on
Tuesday, July 30, at the Morgan Center United Methodist
Church, rural Dows, with burial in the Maynes Grove Cemetery, rural
Bradford. Rev. David Gobeli officiated.
Jessie was born on May 13, 1912 at Tipton, to Jesse Earl and LaVerna
Carney Morton. She graduated from the Tipton High School and Iowa State
Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. She taught school in Cedar County
and on August 28, 1943, married Sterl A. McCullough at Tipton. They
farmed in the Dows area and she was a member of the Morgan Methodist
Church and the "V" Club. Jessie enjoyed playing Scrabble and
visiting with her friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy McCullough of Hampton; a son,
Roger and wife, Ruth of Fort Dodge; two grandsons, Ryan McCullough
and wife, Becky of Cedar Rapids and Reed McCullough and wife, Emily of
Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and a sister, Pauline Bernet of Muscatine.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sterl in 1966;
and one brother, Roger Morton.

Jeanette Kolthoff

Jeanette C. Kolthoff, 72, of Ackley, died on Friday, July 26,
2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Services were
held on Tuesday, July 30, at the Faith Presbyterian Church in Ackley,
with burial in the East Friesland Cemetery, Ackley. Rev. Tim Diehl
officiated.
Jeanette was born on March 20, 1930 in rural Ackley, to Claus and Helen Risius. She attended
the Hazelgreen Country School and on April 15,
1948, she married John Kolthoff in Waterloo. Jeanette worked for 10
years at the Presbyterian Home in Ackley and baby-sat for children.
Jeanette was a member of the Faith Presbyterian Church in Ackley.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Brass and husband, Merlyn of
Ackley; a son, Ronald Kolthoff and wife, Cindy of Iowa Falls; three
grandchildren, Heather Kolthoff of Columbia, Missouri, Kari Vanderloop
and husband, Tony of Urbandale and Tricia Kolthoff of Iowa Falls; and
a sister, Kate Kolthoff of Steamboat Rock.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Clara Mitterer; and two
brothers, William and Gerald Risius.

Myrna Hurd

Myrna M. Hurd, 82, of Marshalltown and formerly of Dows, died
on Friday,
July 26, 2002, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
Services
were held on Tuesday, July 30, at the First Presbyterian Church in
Marshalltown, with burial in the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery,
Marshalltown. Rev. Rich King officiated.
Myrna was born on October 11, 1919 in Franklin County, to John and Lena Tjarks McDonald. She was raised and educated in Buckeye, Popejoy and
Iowa Falls, graduating from the Buckeye High School. On November 24, 1939,
she married Richard Hurd at Lancaster, Missouri and they lived in Dows,
Iowa Falls and Hampton, returning to the Dows area in 1946. She was a
member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dows.
She is survived by her husband, Richard of Marshalltown; a son, Murvil and wife, Connie of Eagan, Minnesota; two daughters, Darla Brooks
and husband, Wills of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Leann Tjarks and husband,
David of Goldfield; five sisters; two brothers; six grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.
The

Jane Renaud, 85, of Eldora, died on Friday, July 26, 2002, at
the Valley View Nursing Home in Eldora.
The body was cremated and
memorial services will be held at a later date at the St. Luke's
Episcopal Church in Des Moines.
Jane was born in Chicago and had lived most of her life in Grinnell.
She moved to Eldora in 1997. She was a retired administrative
assistant at Grinnell College.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Clock of Eldora, Virginia
Beane of Des Moines and Kathleen Gassman of Cedar Rapids; a son,
David of Casper, Wyoming; and six grandchildren.

Viola Tamminga

Viola Mae Tamminga, 74, of Hampton, died on Saturday, July 27,
2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Services were
held on Tuesday, July 30, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in
Latimer, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Jeff Long
officiated.
Viola was born on December 16, 1927 in Franklin County, to Ralph and Gertie
Meints Schmidt. On August 15, 1947, she married John Tamminga at
Nashua. She was co-owner of Tillie's Diner in Waverly. Viola was a
member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer.
She is survived by her husband, John of Hampton; a daughter,
Charlene Richtsmeier and husband, Larry of Latimer; a son, Duane Tamminga and wife, Deb of Eldora; a sister, Idella Freie of Hampton;
four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her parents and a sister, Lirlene.

Edna Ila Clark

Edna Ila Clark, 94, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, July 29,
2002, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.
Funeral services will be
on
Friday, August 2, at 11:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa
Falls. Rev. Richard Layman will officiate. Burial will be in the
Green Castle Cemetery, Green Castle. Visitation will be on Thursday,
August 1, from 2-8:00 p.m., at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, where the
family will receive friends between 6-8:00 p.m.
Edna was born on April 27, 1908, to Ray and Eva Minear Mullihan at her
parent's farm in Jasper County. She attended country schools and
graduated from the Maxwell Community High School. Edna was united in
marriage to Henry Thomas Runyan on June 30, 1926. He was killed in a
car accident in 1936. In 1946, she married John Bogue, who later
died. She married John C. Clark on June 16, 1960 and he died in
1982. She was employed as a cook for the Hardin County Home for many
years. Edna was a member of the First United Methodist Church in
Iowa Falls and the women's quilting circle, which she enjoyed very
much.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Runyan and wife, Norma of
Pinellas Park, Florida, Eugene Runyan and wife, Mary Lou of South Bend,
Indiana and John Runyan and wife, Nadine of Montezuma; three daughters,
Patricia Ballard and husband, Richard of Pleasant Hill, Betty
Partridge and husband, Richard of Kansas City, Missouri and Marilynn Thornton
and husband, David of Iowa Falls; two stepdaughters, Pegee Bartling
of Storm Lake and Patty Lou Nichol and husband, Jerry of Knoxville;
24 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; six
great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Plummer of Des
Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands; an
infant son, John; a grandson, Robert Partridge; a granddaughter,
Jenifer Nichol; a sister, Dolores Remick; and three brothers,
Marion, James and John.

Irene Long

Irene Isabelle Long, 87, of Union, died on Tuesday, July 30,
2002, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in
Marshalltown.
Services were held on
Friday, August 2, at the Whitten Community Church, with
burial in the Benson Cemetery, Whitten. Rev. Charles Fry
officiated.
Irene was born on August 2, 1914 in Grundy County, to MacDowell and Ruby
Lighter Hughes. She graduated from the Conrad High School in 1933 and
from Marshalltown Business College in 1935. On August 18, 1939, she
married Raymond Long in Marshalltown. She was employed by the
Central Iowa Telephone Company for 17 years and retired as Whitten
postmaster after serving 23 years (1959-1982).
She was a member of
the Whitten Community Church, the SR Hearthstone Club, the Order of
the Eastern Star and the National League of Postmasters.
She is survived by three daughters, Diane Amundson of Iowa City;
Dana Alexander and husband, James and Denise Rife and husband,
Daniel, all of Wichita, Kansas; two sons, Duane Long of Webster City
and David Long of Iowa City; two grandsons; three sisters, Sara
Thatcher and husband, Bud of Liscomb, Margaret Zorn and husband, Gunther of Rome, Italy and Betty Lynch and husband, Richard of
Conrad.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in
1974; two sisters and three brothers.

Beula Heath

Beula Heath, 84, of Alden, formerly of Clarksville, died on
Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Allison Health Care Center.
Services
were held on Friday, August 2, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, with
burial in the Lynwood Cemetery, both in Clarksville. Memorials may
be directed to the family of Beula Heath.
Beula Mae was born on March 15, 1918 in Nashua, to Arthur and Erna Beau
Wait. She graduated from the Nashua High School and married Floyd Becker
in 1936. Floyd died in 1957 and she married Sam Heath in 1971. Beula
had lived in Nashua, Clarksville, Alden and Ackley before becoming a
resident of the Allison Health Care Center.
She is survived by her husband, Sam Heath of Allison; three sons, Everet Wait and wife, Pat of Dixon, Illinois, Larry Becker and wife, Alana
of Clarksville and Robert Becker and wife, Natalie of Bahama, North Carolina;
two daughters, Dixie Fredricks and husband, Larry of Milledgville,
Illinois and Cleta Wilson and husband, Pat of Dumont; four sisters,
Kathryn McKinney, Beatrice Hammond, Cleta Phillips, all of Des
Moines and Jane Miller of Stigler, Oklahoma; six grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; several stepchildren
and step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first
husband; two brothers, Henry and Curtis Wait; and one grandchild.
