Delores Orr

Delores Ann Orr, 75, of Hampton, died on Sunday, June 2, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Services were held on Tuesday, June 4, at the United Methodist Church in Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Miller officiated.

Delores was born on September 29, 1926 at Alexander, to Guy and Eva Roed Simons. She graduated from the Hampton High School and on April 15, 1945, she married Junior Orr at Hampton. She was a homemaker and a member of the Hampton Methodist Church. She was a member of the Good Luck Club, the Butterfly Group, several card groups including the Hospital Auxiliary Marathon Bridge and "500" groups.

She is survived by two sons, Jon and wife, Debra of Leesburg, Florida and Joel and wife, Kim of Hampton; a daughter, DeeAnn Sinclair and husband, Gary of Indianola; daughter-in-law, Donna Smith of Bogue Chitto, Massachusetts; a sister, Rosalyn Symens of Hampton; two brothers, Newman Simons of Hampton and Lowell Simons of Milford; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Jerry; and two brothers, Arvon and Larry Simons.

Richard Gerdes
July 26, 1929-June 2, 2002

Richard A. Gerdes, 72, of Ackley, died on Sunday, June 2, 2002, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Services will be held on Wednesday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m., at the East Friesland Presbyterian Church in Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Randy Russon will officiate. Military rites will be provided by the Elliot-Keninger Post No. 252 of Ackley.

Richard was born on July 26, 1929 in Cleves, to George and Bena Kuper Gerdes. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. On December 14, 1957, he married Darlene Oelmann at Hampton and they farmed.

He was a member of the East Friesland Presbyterian Church and the Elliot-Keninger American Legion Post No. 252 of Ackley.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene; two sons, Kirk of Cumming, Georgia and Ken and wife, Donna of Santa Clarita, California; two daughters, Lisa Ubben and husband, Randy of Aplington and Gina Gerdes and her friend, Kent Ubben of Aplington; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Zacharius of Parkersburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Virgil Zacharius.

Sema Willms

Sema Willms, 99, of Iowa Falls, died on Thursday, June 6, 2002, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Services were held on Monday, June 10, at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Pleasant Hill Grant Township Cemetery, rural Iowa Falls. Rev. Bob Nieuwendorp officiated.

Sema was born on June 15, 1902 at Macy, to Martin and Trienje Meyer Karsjens. On February 10, 1920, she married Henry Willms at Stout. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking and baking.

She is survived by a son, Vernon and wife, Velma of Ackley; four daughters, Christine Tripp of Iowa Falls, Evelyn Murra and husband, Clarence of Iowa Falls, LaVelle Richmann of Iowa Falls and La Vonne Off and husband, Herman of Bradford; 18 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters; two brothers; an infant sister; two sons-in-law; a great-granddaughter; and a grandson-in-law.

Mamie Biersborn
March 28, 1910-June 9, 2002

Mamie Biersborn, 92, a longtime resident of Union, died on Sunday, June 9, 2002, at the Valley View Nursing Center in Eldora.

Services will be held on Thursday, June 13, at 1:30 p.m., at the Union Community Church of Union, with burial in the Union Cemetery. Rev. Rick Schill will officiate. Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Biersborn Funeral Home in Union, with the family present at this time. A memorial fund has been established in her name for the Union Community Church building fund.

Mamie was born on March 28, 1910 in Hubbard, to Ernest and Bertha Nehring Dreier. Her father died during the flu epidemic in 1918 and her mother remarried to Paul Sievert. She graduated from the Eldora High School in 1928 and received a teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught in area schools including the New Providence School. On June 5, 1935, she married Edwin Biersborn in Hubbard. They were the third generation of Biersborns to own and operate the Biersborn Funeral Home in Union, retiring in 1983.

She was a member of the Union Community Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent and church organist for 50 years. Mamie was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and served on the school board during the merger of the Union and Whitten schools.

She is survived by a son, Keith Biersborn and wife, Mary Lou of Union; a daughter, Kathy Priddy and husband, Randy of Belews Creek, North Carolina; a brother, Stanley Dreier and wife, Jean of Eldora; a sister, Beatrice Boeke of Iowa Falls; a half sister, JoAnn Pfaltzgraff of Indianola; and two granddaughters, Keri and Jami Norman of North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin in 1986; her stepfather, Paul Sievert; two stepsisters; and a daughter in infancy.

Allan M. Rash
November 29, 1932-June 12, 2002

Allan M. Rash, 69, of Alden, formerly of Davenport, died on Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at the Mary Greely Medical Center in Ames.

Funeral services were held at the First Lutheran Church in Dows, with burial in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows. Rev. Richard Layman officiated.

Allan was born on November 29, 1932 in Popejoy, to Lyle and Selma (Graff) Rash. He was educated at the Oakland Township School in Popejoy and graduated in 1950. After completing school, Allan worked for local farmers during the war. In December of 1952, Allan began serving in the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged from active service in December of 1956. On April 20, 1958,

Allan was united in marriage with Joan Filbrandt at the First Lutheran Church in Dows. In March 1964, Allan and his family moved to Davenport, where he was a welder with the J.I. Case Company until 1970. At that time Allan took a position with Oscar Meyer as a welder and mechanic on their food service production machines. Due to health problems, Allan retired on May 12, 1982, and in July of 1994, the couple returned to live in Alden.

Allan was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dows and the Davenport American Legion. For over 20 years, Allen has endured COPD, a heart condition, cancer and other illnesses.

He is survived by his wife, Joan of Alden; two children, Gary and his wife, Kim of Buckeye and Julie and her husband, Lauren Hendren of Stuart, Florida; grandson, Jeremy Rash of Casstown, Ohio; two step-grandsons, Jacob Hendren and Michael Hendren, both of Davenport; three sisters, Norma Hunt of Alden, Nancy McKinley of Alden and Sandy Hackbarth and her husband, Donal of Hampton; brother, William and his wife, Sandy of Tucson, Arizona; brother-in-law, Robert Filbrandt of Dows; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald; and sister, Virginia Willis.

June Seibert

June A. Seibert, 85, of Dumont, died on Monday, June 14, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Services will be held on Friday, June 28, at 10:30 a.m., at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont, with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Rev. Michael Shaffer will officiate. Visitation will be on Thursday, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.

June was born on April 5, 1917 at Allison, to Charles and Mabel Jones Harper. She was raised and educated in Hansell. On February 20, 1935, she married Edwin Seibert in Hampton and was a homemaker. She attended the New Hope United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin of Dumont; a daughter, Barbara Card and husband, Robert of Dumont; a son, Duane Seibert and wife, Mary Lou of Rudd; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; one sister; two half sisters; and two half brothers.

Steven R. Starn
March 3, 1953-June 15, 2002

Steven R. Starn, 49, of Holland, died on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City of natural causes.

Following cremation, graveside memorial services will be on Wednesday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m., in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Toledo, with Harvin Meyer officiating. The Toledo American Legion Post will provide full military rites. There will be no visitation and a memorial fund has been established.

Steven was born on March 3, 1953 in Marshalltown, to Roy and Elaine (Mason) Starn. He was raised in rural Toledo and received his education there. He was a graduate of the South Tama High School in 1971. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1972 and served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1976. On November 24, 1990, Steven was united in marriage to Ramona Neessen at the Friends Church in Marshalltown. He had been working at the Swift Packing House in Marshalltown for the last 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona of Holland; a daughter, Jessica and her fiancée, Joe Dolash of Liscomb; his mother, Elaine of Melbourne; two stepchildren, Tina and her husband, Terry Olmstead of Marshalltown and B. J. Ryerson; two grandchildren, Jordan and Jaydon Dolash; four step-grandchildren, Brittany, Richard, Dennis and Tara; and three brothers, Gary of Marshalltown, Richard and his wife, Kathy of Marshalltown and David Starn of Melbourne.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy; and one brother.

Mercedes M. Cessford

Mercedes M. Cessford, 81, of Marshalltown, died on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at her home.

Services will be held on Wednesday, June 19, at the St. Henry's Catholic Church in Marshalltown, with Father Louis Jaeger officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Mercedes was born on July 10, 1920 in New Hampton, to Theodore and Elizabeth (Zimmer) Streit. She graduated from the New Hampton Catholic School and attended beautician school in Waterloo. She was employed as a licensed beautician with her sisters, under the name of the Three Sisters Beauty Salon. On August 30, 1940, Mercedes was united in marriage to Herold Cessford in Iowa Falls. Together they owned and operated Cessford's Drive Inn in Des Moines during the late 40s. They later moved to Iowa Falls where her husband was involved with Weaver Construction and in 1966 moved to Toledo to operate the family construction business, Cessford Construction. Following the death of her husband in 1991, she continued to live in Toledo, moving to Marshalltown in 1996.

She is survived by a daughter, Heidi and her husband, Steve Krabbe of Marshalltown; two sisters, Frances and her husband, Richard Steelman of Fort Dodge and Alvera Jensen of Ralston, Nebraska; and two grandsons, Ryan and Kyle Krabbe of Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; and a brother, Oscar.

Frederick Robeoltman
August 18, 1914-June 20, 2002

Frederick "Fred" W. Robeoltman, 87, of Rockwell, died on Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Services were held on Monday, June 24, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell, with burial in the Rockwell Cemetery. Pastor Jackie Swanson officiated.

Fred was born on August 18, 1914, to Hermann and Anna Eilers Robeoltman on the family farm near Rockwell. At the age of 15, following the death of his father, he took over the family farm and farmed until his final days. On December 19, 1939, he married June Sjostrand in Portland, Iowa. He was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church and former member of the Moose Lodge No. 1328. His hobbies were traveling, fishing in Canada, playing cards at the Legion and doing plumbing.

He is survived by one son, Lavern and wife, Gloria of Iowa Falls; two grandsons, Todd Robeoltman and wife, Janeen of Rockwell and Chad Robeoltman and wife, Susan of West Des Moines; four great-grandchildren, Maci and Mitchell of Rockwell and Zach and Taylor of West Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1994; and seven sisters.

Lloyd Eekhoff

Lloyd P. Eekhoff, 51, of Eldora, died on Thursday, June 20, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 24, at the First Methodist Church in Eldora, with Tim Boettger from the Orchard Hill Reformed Church officiating. Cremation will follow the funeral service.

Lloyd was born on December 24, 1950 in Eldora, to Edward and Martha Uken Eekhoff. He graduated from the Steamboat Rock School in 1969 and attended the University of Northern Iowa where he received his B.A. degree. On September 1, 1971, he married Jane Stonebraker at the Pine Lake State Park in Eldora. He taught industrial arts for a short time at Wellsburg, then worked at the Austinville Elevator until he began farming in 1976.

He was a member of the Hardin County Farm Bureau; a member of NRA; and was affiliated with the Orchard Hill Church in Cedar Falls. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and motorcycle riding with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; a son, Lincoln and wife, Lindsay of Waterloo; a daughter, Kay Eekhoff at home; his mother, Martha Eekhoff of Wellsburg; a brother, Dale Eekhoff and wife, Paulette of Cedar Falls; a sister, Margret Jager and husband, Tom of Grand Rapids, Michigan; two brothers-in-law, Bill Stonebraker and wife, Mary and Jody Stonebraker and wife, Jacque, all of Eldora.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Loren Huston

Loren Huston, 79, of Hampton, died on Friday, June 21, 2002, at his home.

Services will be held on Wednesday, June 26, at 10:30 a.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.

Loren was born on May 30, 1923 in Richfield Township, Wisconsin, to Omie and Gladys Eulalia Roach. He was educated in the Oak Park Academy at Nevada and served in the United States Navy. On May 15, 1946, he married Alberta Walsh in Mason City. He was office manager at Shaw Construction Inc. and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Loren was a great fan of Dixieland music.

He is survived by two sons, Hugh Huston and wife, Glenda of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Van Huston of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother; and one sister.

Paul Smith

Paul Gregory Smith, 31, of Dumont, died on Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City of injuries received in a motorcycle accident near Dumont.

Services will be held on Wednesday, June 26, at 1:30 p.m., at the United Methodist Church in Hampton, with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Rev. Douglas Tharpe and Rev. Michael Shaffer will officiate.

Paul was born on March 14, 1971 at Belmond, to Maynard and Ruby Anderson Smith. He attended the Dumont High School and on May 23, 1992, he married Betty Mejia in Dumont. Paul worked as a welder at Seabees Corporation (Kadon) in Hampton. He was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont, was an avid motorcycle rider and belonged to the ABATE motorcycle group. He enjoyed bow hunting and all other types of hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Dumont; two daughters, Alicia and Alysia of Dumont; his mother, Ruby Smith of Mason City; two sisters, Shirley McLaughlin and husband, Paul of Belmond and Shila Trunkhill and husband, Thomas of Mason City; a brother, Marlin Smith and wife, Darcy of Dumont; and 16 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; and his father.

Lucille Miller

Lucille Miller, 77, of Dumont, died on Sunday, June 23, 2002, at the Franklin General Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Services will be held on Thursday, June 27, at 10:30 a.m., at the Dumont Reformed Church, with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont from 4-7:00 p.m. Rev. Robert Scholten will officiate.

Lucille was born on July 6, 1924 in Butler County, to Hopke and Tillie Hopkes. She attended rural Butler County Schools and on March 25, 1941, she married Kenneth Miller in Dumont. She was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church and taught Sunday School for a number of years, was a member of the guild and sang in the choir.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Crawford and husband, Virgil of Ackley; four grandchildren, Debra Dralle and husband, Troy, Terry Crawford and wife, Jamie, all of Allison, Tammy Hearn and special friend, Dean Pettit of Grundy Center and Timothy Miller of Rowan; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Janice and Lorraine; a sister, Arlean Viet; and a brother, Fred Hopkes.

Vera Ferguson
September 28, 1913-June 24, 2002

Vera Ferguson, 88, of Iowa Falls and formerly of Florida, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls, from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., on Thursday, at the Linn's Funeral Home Chapel, Iowa Falls, with the Reverend Randy Crane of the West Friesland Presbyterian Church, Ackley officiating. Burial will follow in the Northlawn Memory Gardens, Iowa Falls.

Vera Eldise Conger, was born on September 28, 1913 at Keeseville, New York, the daughter of Harlon and Lois (Finney) Conger. She attended and graduated from the Draper High School, Draper, New York with the class of 1932. She attended and graduated from the State University of New York, Cobleskill, New York, receiving her Bachelor Degree in 1946 in Home Economics. On April 20, 1935, she was united in marriage to Ernest Dykeman at Schenectady, New York. To this union two children were born, Norman and Marlea. They were later divorced. On March 27, 1948, she was united in marriage to Oscar Ferguson at Giffords, New York.

She had been a pastry and salad chef for several dormitories with New York State University. After retiring to Florida she was active with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, was a volunteer for the Women of the Moose at Summerfield, Florida and a member of the Alpha Sigma Delta Sorority.

Vera Ferguson is survived by her daughter, Marlea Wiese of Iowa Falls; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Peck of Rexford, New York; and two brothers, Walter Conger of Randleman, North Carolina and Harlon Conger of Syracuse, New York.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harlon and Lois Conger; her husband, Oscar Ferguson; an infant son, Norman C. Dykeman; one brother, Robert Conger; three sister-in-laws, Elizabeth Conger, Irene Conger and Evelyn Conger; one brother-in-law, Alan Peck, Sr.; and one nephew, Robert Conger, Jr.

Donald Sudderberg

Donald Oliver Sudderberg, 70, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, June 24, 2002, at his home.

Services were held on Thursday, June 27, at the St. Mark's Catholic Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the St. Mark's cemetery. Father James Dubert officiated.

Donald was born on June 28, 1931 at Boone, to Lewis and Laura Newcomb Sudderberg. He attended the Boone High School and on February 23, 1952, he married Corine Phelan at Boone. They lived in Iowa Falls where he was employed as a plumber and was assistant city inspector. He retired in 1990. He enjoyed gardening, music, traveling and bird watching.

He is survived by his wife, Corine; three daughters, Cindi Boyd of Waterloo, Donna Wagner and husband, Gary of El Paso, Texas and Julie Rieks and husband, Terry of Alden; three sons, Mark and wife, Jane of Rockford, Illinois, Matt and fiancée, Marla of Alden and Denny and wife, Teresa of Iowa Falls; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Violet Hatch of Ames, Irene Moeller and husband, Virgil and Diann Sundall and husband, Kenneth, all of Boone; a brother, Kenny Sudderberg of Carmichael, California; a sister-in-law, Betty Sudderberg of Cedar Rapids; and a brother-in-law, Bob Parkyn of Grants Pass, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William; two brothers; and three sisters.

Laura Ward Fuller

Laura M. Ward Fuller, 86, of Iowa Falls died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral service will take place Saturday, June 29 at 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls with burial in Jackson Township Cemetery, Owasa. Rev. Don Preston will officiate.

Laura was born Jan. 29, 1916 on the family farm near Popejoy to Henry and Luella Collins Terveer. She graduated from Popejoy High School in 1933. On Oct. 12, 1944 Laura married Wilce Ward in Rockford, Ill. After his death she married Fred Fuller on July 23, 1984 in Iowa Falls. She belonged to the Golden Antlers Moose and the Methodist Church women's group. She enjoyed gardening, canning, music, laughing and being involved in her daughters lives.

Survivors include four daughters, Joan Birkemeyer of Apple Valley, Minn., Jane Johns and her husband, Dean, of Ackley, Judy Fuller and her husband, Gary, of Iowa Falls, and Joyce Metzger and her husband, Wayne, of Otho; a stepdaughter, Janice Knott and her husband, Don, of McCallsburg; 11 grandchildren; five step grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Pieters, of Omaha, Neb.; and two brothers, Wayne Terveer of Rochester, Minn., and Richard Terveer and his wife, Kay, of Hubbard. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wilce Ward in 1980; husband Fred Fuller in 1999; a son-in-law, Gene Birkemeyer; a sister; and five brothers.

H. H. Heetland Jr., 74, of Glen Allen Heights, Illinois, formerly of Ackley, died on Thursday, June 27, 2002, at his home.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 18, at 10:30 a.m., at the Oakwood Cemetery in Ackley.

H. H. was born on August 31, 1927 in Ackley, to Herman and Bonnie Whitmore Heetland. He attended the Ackley High School until he entered the United States Navy during World War II, where he served as a gunners mate. He married Irene Chenwal at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. He was employed by Reames Water Heaters in Chicago.

He is survived by a brother, Edward Heetland of Waterloo; two sisters, Phyllis Duit of Mesa, Arizona and Donna Maurine Lindaman of Iowa Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene; a brother, Ronnie; and two sisters, Julanne Heetland and Katherine Stubbie.

Walter Daleske, 95, of Eldora, died of natural causes at the Valley View Nursing Center in Eldora on Friday, June 28, 2002.

Services are pending at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.

Delos Miller
November 15, 1927-June 30, 2002

Delos D. Miller, 74, of Ackley, died on Saturday, June 30, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Services will be held on Wednesday, July 3, at 10:30 a.m., at the Dumont Reformed Church, with burial in the Dumont cemetery. Rev. Robert Scholten will officiate at the service.

Delos was born on November 15, 1927 in Butler County, to Claus and Reka (Lursen) Miller. He attended country school in Madison Township. At age 18, he enlisted into the United States Army. On November 14, 1949, Delos was united was united in marriage to Virginia Lauterbach at the Reformed Church in Stout.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; three sons, Dennis, and his wife, Debbra of Ackley, Norman and his wife, Vickie of Grinnell and Vernon of Ackley; one daughter, Patsy Miller of Ackley; six grandchildren; one sister; and one brother.

Delos was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers.
