James Oppold

James "Jim" A. Oppold Sr., 70, of Raleigh, North Carolina,
formerly of Ackley, died of a heart attack on Monday, April, 1,
2002, while traveling in the western mountains of North
Carolina.
Services were held on Friday, April 5, at
the St. Raphael's
Catholic Church in Raleigh, with burial Saturday in the church
cemetery.
James was born on June 14, 1931 at Iowa Falls, to Robert and
Gertrude Lamm Oppold. On August 19, 1956, he married Mary Ann
O'Brien at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton. He attended
the University of Northern Iowa and Loras College at Dubuque. He
earned his master's degree from the University of Kansas and a
doctorate in industrial engineering from the University of
Florida. He began his career in public health with the Tennessee
Valley Authority in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Florence, Alabama. He
participated in the certification and accreditation of
university and college safety and health programs.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; two sons,
James Jr. of Indianapolis, Indiana and Paul of New York; two daughters, Teresa
Isaacson of Atlanta, Georgia and Anne Healy of New Bern, North Carolina;
eight grandchildren; four brothers, Frances and Edmund of Iowa
Falls and Robert and Joseph, both of Waterloo; and two sisters,
Evelyn Lawless of Eldora and Ruth Scallon, of Iowa Falls.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Melvin.

Helen Preston

Helen Preston, 86, of Iowa Falls, formerly of Hampton, died
on
Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Presbyterian Hospital in
Plano, Texas.
Services will be held on Thursday, April 11, at
11:00 a.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton,
with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be on
Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. until the service time. Rev. Don Preston of
the Iowa Falls Methodist Church will officiate.
Helen was born on July 30, 1915 at Winterset, to Clarence and Mary
Chase Meyer. She attended Van Meter Schools and on June 15,
1934, she married Levi Preston at Van Meter.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls
and was active in both the Iowa Falls and Hampton Methodist
Churches. She enjoyed watching birds, sewing, porcelain dolls
and growing flowers.
She is survived by a son, Bruce Preston of Texas; a daughter,
Jean Halfpop of Cotopaxi, Colorado; a sister, Doris Hill of
Plainfield, Illinois; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Anne S. Ellefson, died on Friday, April 5, 2002, at her home in
Hampton.
Services were held on Monday, April 8, at the Hampton
United Methodist Church, with burial in the Alexander Cemetery.
Rev. Jerry Miller officiated.
Anne was born to Engel and Mattie Schmidt Stoffer, (date not
available). On August 23, 1941, she married Harold Ellefson in
Bethany, Missouri. She was a member of the Hampton United Methodist
Church.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Curly Ellefson; two
daughters, Carol Achterkirch and husband, Ray of Jackson,
Minnesota and Carmen Lundie and husband, Bill of Moline, Illinois; a
son, Timothy Ellefson and wife, Peggee of Eldora; a sister,
Arlene Pals of Alexander; a brother, Ed Stoffer of Belmond; five
grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; and two brothers, Bud and Jack Stoffer.
The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Glenn James Lloyd, 82, of Fort Dodge, formerly of Ledyard,
died on Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Tompkins Memorial Health
Center in Fort Dodge.
Funeral services will be held
on Tuesday,
April 16, at 10:30 a.m., at the Bethany Evangelical and
Reform Church in Ledyard, with burial in the Highland Home
Cemetery, Ledyard. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., on
Monday, April 15, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., at the
Gunderson Funeral Home in Fort Dodge.
Glenn is survived by a son, Gene Lloyd of Fort Dodge; four
daughters, Ranae Anderson of Urbandale, Bonnie Eiffler of
Waterloo, Sheila Pryor of Humboldt and Glennis French of
Ackley; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his wife, Pearl in 1983.

Alma "Suzy" Margaret Hogan Ball Fetters, 59, of Eldora, Iowa,
passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at her home of a
heart attack.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:00 a.m., on
Friday, at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, with burial in
the Friends Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Visitation will be from
2-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls,
with the family receiving friends between the hours of 6-8:00
p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Alma "Suzy" Margaret Hogan, was born on June 14, 1942 at Iowa
Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Alma (Kyd) Hogan.
She attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools. Suzy was united in marriage to Ralph Dale Ball in June 3, 1977
at Iowa Falls, Iowa. He passed away March 12, 1997. On September
14, 2001, she was married to Lester Fetters at Eldora, Iowa. She
had worked at Riverside Book and Bible until 1979, retiring
due to an automobile accident and was a homemaker.
Suzy Fetters is survived by her husband, Lester Fetters of
Eldora; one son, Robert A. Hogan and partner, Judy Fox of
Iowa Falls; four step-children; four grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; one sister, June Eason of Eldora;
four brothers, Robert Hogan of Alden, Keith Hogan and wife,
Joan of Iowa Falls, Donny Hogan and wife, Ruth of Dallas, Texas
and
James Hogan of Hampton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband,
Dale Ball; infant twins; two brothers, Francis and Jerry Hogan;
and
one sister, Ramona Harrison.

Pearl Saaksmeier

Pearl Agnes Saaksmeier, 88, of Hubbard, died of Lou
Gehrig's disease on Sunday, April 7, 2002, at the Scenic Manor Nursing
Home in Iowa Falls.
Services will be held on Wednesday, April 10, at
10:30 a.m., at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, with
burial in the Hubbard Cemetery. Rev. Dr. John Chapple will
officiate.
Pearl was born on September 5, 1913 at Corning, Kansas, to Otto and Anna
Taber Schueller. She attended rural school in the early grades
and moved to Hubbard with her parents in 1922, where she
completed her education. In 1936, she attended the Iowa School of
Beauty Culture in Des Moines. She worked in her profession until
1942, when she went to work at the Des Moines Ordinance Plant at
Ankeny for the duration of the war. On March 10, 1946, she
married Fay Saaksmeier. They lived south of Hubbard on a farm
most of their married life. After her husband's death in 1955,
she moved to the Rock Run Apartments in Iowa Falls.
She is survived by a sister, Ellen Saint of Charles City; and
many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; six brothers, Ben, Charles, Walter, Edward, John and
Delbert; and four sisters, Myrtle Hanson, Elsie Piel, Ruth Baker and
Dora Sayer.
The Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard, was in charge of

Marvin Stahl

Marvin Stahl, 65, of Wellsburg, died on Monday, April 8, 2002,
at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Services will be held on
Thursday, April 11, at 1:30 p.m., at the Wellsburg Reformed
Church, with burial in the Wellsburg Reformed Church
Cemetery. Pastor Russell Muilenberg will officiate. Military rites will be
provided by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and the American Legion
Post No. 213. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday and
from 8-11:00 a.m. on Thursday, at the Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in
Wellsburg. The family will be present on Wednesday evening.
Marvin was born on January 7, 1937 in Eldora, to Herman and Grace
Bunger Stahl. He graduated from the Wellsburg High School in 1955.
On Dec. 12, 1958, he married Anna Mae Schipper in Wellsburg. He
served from 1960-62 in the United States Army. Marvin farmed
all of his life just east of Wellsburg and retired in 1999. They
moved into Wellsburg and he worked for MD Meyer Seeds of Eldora
for a few years.
He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed
Church and past president of the Wellsburg Community Club. His
hobby was bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; three sons, Donald and wife,
Annette of Wellsburg, Rodney of Holland and Darwin and wife,
Nancy of Wellsburg; a daughter, Judy Eiten and husband, Craig
of Wellsburg; six grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Swenson and
husband, Roger of Jewell.
He was preceded in death by his
parents.

Donald Amundson

Donald Robert Amundson, 78, of Nampa, Idaho, died on
Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the Veteran's Hospital in Nampa.
Memorial
services were held on Saturday, April 13, at the Messiah Lutheran Church
in Nampa, with interment at a later date at Lincoln Cemetery in
Radcliffe.
Donald was born on June 18, 1923 at Bode, to Omer and Borghild
Knudslien Amundson and attended school at Radcliffe. He served as a
tail gunner with the 450th bomb group during World War II. He was
shot down over Bulgaria and spent 18 months as a German prisoner of
war. After the war he traveled west through Idaho to Medford, Oregon,
where he married George Bowman on August 8, 1949. He worked in retail
sales for J.C. Penney and the Macy Department Store. He could never
forget Idaho, so he retired there in 1988.
He was active in several
organizations, including the Elks Club, American Legion,
Ex-Prisoners of War, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 15th Air Force
Association, Sons of Norway, Purple Heart Society and the Messiah
Lutheran Church.
He is survived by three sons, Robert of Soldata, Alaska, Donald and
wife, Kim of San Jose, California and Bruce and wife, Elaine of
Vallejo, California; a daughter, Anna Anderson and husband, Ronald of
Nampa; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Betty Abbas of Iowa Falls and LaVonne Johnson of Webster City; two
brothers, Herbert Amundson of Newark, Delaware and Roger Amundson of
Webster City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and
five brothers; and sisters.

Dena Harms

Dena Harms, 97, of Wellsburg, died on Thursday, April 11, 2002,
at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington.
Services were held on
Saturday, April 13, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural
Wellsburg, with burial in the church cemetery.
Dena was born on May 10, 1904 in Wellsburg, to Evert and Stena Sweater
Ross. She was raised on a farm near Wellsburg and attended a country
school in Grundy County. On February 12, 1928, she married Ebe Harms in
Grundy County. They farmed near Ackley for seven years and then
moved to Wellsburg. She worked as a housekeeper for many individuals
in the area. Her husband died in 1948 and she continued to live in
Wellsburg until going to the Aplington nursing home four years ago.
She enjoyed crocheting and giving items as gifts.
She is survived by a daughter, Marian Everts of Wellsburg; a son,
Elmer Harms and wife, Donna of Delta; eight grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; one son, LeRoy; and one granddaughter in infancy.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg, was in charge of

Marcus Hoelscher

Marcus Frederick Hoelscher, 88, of Kanawha, died on Thursday, April 11,
2002, at the Muse-Norris Inpatient Unit at Mason City.
Services were
held on Saturday morning, April 13, at the United Methodist Church in
Kanawha, with Pastor Susan Detwiler officiating and an afternoon
service at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls with
Pastor Ken Krueger officiating. Burial was in the Northlawn Memory Gardens in
Iowa Falls.
Marcus was born on December 4, 1913, to Gustav and Anna Joens Hoelscher on
a farm near Hubbard. He graduated from the Hubbard High School and from
Iowa State University. In 1940, he married Rocel Dubberke from
Hubbard and they lived in Yankton, South Dakota, where he worked for
the Gurney
Seed and Nursery. He returned to farming, first at Hubbard and then
to Iowa Falls in 1945. He retired in 1970 and moved into Iowa Falls
where he spent the next 20 years selling real estate. After the
death of his wife in 1987, he married Louise Smith in June 1992, at
Kanawha. They lived in Kanawha and Rochester, Minnesota, during their
marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Louise; two sons, Wayne
and his wife, Cynthia of Plymouth, Minnesota and Neil and his wife, Lois of Perry; a
sister, Catharina Hoelscher of Fort Dodge; four grandsons, Aaron and
his wife, Erin, Matthew, Kip and Jeff; a granddaughter, Louise and
husband, Dale; a step-granddaughter, Heather; step-grandson, Michael;
two great-grandsons; and a step-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; his first wife, Rocel; and a sister, Laura
Myers.

Roy Hoefer

Roy Hoefer, 85, of Iowa Falls, died on Friday, April 12,
2002, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Services were held on
Tuesday, April 16, at the St. Mark's Catholic Church in Iowa Falls, with
burial in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Williams. Father James Dubert officiated.
Roy was born on April 16, 1916, in Morgan Township near Dows, to John
and Annie Wilkins Hoefer. He grew up near Williams and farmed in the
Dows area until moving to a farm near Nevada. On January 12, 1938, he
married Evelyn Fink at Webster City. He retired from farming at age
54 and worked for Hach Chemicals in Ames until 1978.
After he
retired he enjoyed fishing at Lake Rathburn and spending time with
the senior citizens in Nevada. He was a member of the St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Nevada, former member of the St. Mary's Catholic
Church at Williams, and attended St. Mark's Catholic Church in Iowa
Falls.
He is survived by two daughters, Leona Sharar and husband, Larry of
Dows and Norma Tomlinson and husband, Gary of Phoenix, Arizona; 12
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Miller of
Carroll; two brothers, Maurice Hoefer of Lake Havasu City, Arizona
and Richard Hoefer of Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; his wife, Lucille; and a son, Robert.

Carolyn Jean "Buffy" Kramer, 63, of Aplington, died

Saturday, April 13, 2002, at her home.

services will be held on Friday, April 19, in the Pleasant View
Cemetery, with Pastor Ron Bartlett of the First
Congregational Church, Parkersburg, officiating.
Carolyn was born on January 1, 1939 in Marquette, to Clarence and
Marjorie Gress Fuller. She graduated from the McGregor High School and
on July 2, 1965, she married Dennis Kramer Sr. in Caledonia, Minnesota.
They lived in several places before settling in Aplington. She had
been a truck driver and a construction worker. She and her husband
ran Hausman Trucking for several years.
She enjoyed growing flowers,
traveling the countryside in her convertible and riding motorcycle
to other states with her husband.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis; three daughters, Cindy Sue
Lowell of Oskaloosa, Brenda Anderson and her husband, Rod of
Parkersburg and Marjie Rampot and husband, Randy of Cedar Rapids;
two sons, David Kramer and wife, Joyce of Phoenix, Arizona and
Dennis Kramer Jr. of Appleton, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Delores Schultz of McGregor
and Laura Fernau of Oelwein.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; an infant sister, Clarice; and a brother, Wayne.
The Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Aplington, was in charge of

Grace Eertmoed, 90, of Steamboat Rock, died on Saturday,
April 13, 2002, at the Ackley Presbyterian Village.
Services were
held on Monday, April 15, at the First Christian Reformed Church, rural
Wellsburg, with burial in the church cemetery. Pastor Thomas Voss
officiated.
Grace was born on January 22, 1912 near Steamboat Rock, to Allie and
Gepka Reikena Eertmoed. She attended country school and was a member
of the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg and a member of
the Timothy Sisters.
She is survived by several cousins.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; three brothers, Jan, Ben and Albert Eertmoed.

2002, at his home.

receive friends one hour before the services on Wednesday.
Gloy was born on March 11, 1917 at Aplington, to Dick and Mary Ludeman
Lindaman. On January 28, 1941, he married Donna Maurine Heetland at
Ackley. He was a salesman by profession.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; four sons, Kendall Lindaman and
his wife, Ann of Iowa Falls, Allen Lindaman of Adel, Dennis
Lindaman of Joplin, Missouri and Rodney Lindaman and wife, Susan of
Colorado Springs, Colorado; a daughter, Donnita Off of Iowa Falls; 12
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Andrew
Lindaman of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
four brothers, John, Diedrick, Mark and Milton; and two sisters,
Fanny and Nellie.

Emma Jeanne Fox, 79, of Portland, Oregon, formerly of Iowa
Falls, died on Sunday, April 14, 2002, at her home of
Parkinson's disease. Funeral services will be held in
Portland.
Emma was born on September 12, 1922 at Iowa Falls, to Richard and Emma Oppold Warren. She graduated from
the Iowa Falls High School in 1940 and
worked for AAA in Iowa Falls and later as a confidential secretary.
She is survived by four daughters, Judy Lamb of Oregon City, Oregon,
Joyce Johnson of Hood River, Oregon, Jennifer Sears of Vancouver,
Washington and Jackie Stansgar of Portland, Oregon; seven
grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Mary Doris Warren of
Portland, Oregon and Gladys Hutchens of Kalispell, Montana; and one brother,
Hollis Warren of Iowa Falls.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Everett; and three brothers, Kenneth, Victor
and Wilbur.

Dorothy V. Wessels, 93, of Ackley, died on Monday, April 15,
2002, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington.

held on Wednesday, April 17, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. Father Jim
Miller will officiate.
Dorothy was born on June 10, 1908 in Geneva, to Charles and Clara Yenter Horner. She attended Geneva
Schools and on September 22, 1936,
she married Roy Wessels at Waterloo. She had been employed in Ackley
at the Tot and Teen, Dentel's and Tegens.
Dorothy was a member of
the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ackley, American Legion Auxiliary,
Altar Society, Garden Club and the St. Mary's Guild.
She is survived by three sons, Jack and his wife, Marlys, Jim and
Joe and his wife, Angie, all of Ackley; eight grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
her husband; a granddaughter, Heather Crotty; and a brother, Charlie
Horner.

Michael Budde Sr.

Michael Holt Budde Sr., 57, of Tucson, Arizona,
died of lung cancer on Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Veterans'
Hospital Hospice in Tucson.
Graveside military services were
held on Thursday, April 25, at the National Memorial Cemetery in
Phoenix, Arizona.
Michael was born on March 16, 1945 in East St. Louis, Illinois, to
former Iowa Falls residents, Wilbur and Juanita Budde of Deming,
New Mexico. Michael graduated from the Chariton High School in 1963 and
served in the United States Air Force from 1964-72. He worked as a
senior engineer for the SRS in Kansas City. In 1999, he moved to
Tucson, where he was employed by the Hoffman Steel Co., until
disability forced his retirement last year.
He is survived by his mother, Juanita Budde of Deming; a sister
and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Hal Campbell of Tucson; a
daughter, Michelle Koivista and family; and a son, Michael Jr.
and family, all of Fort Wayne, Indiana; a niece, Sarah Neubauer and
family of Alden; and a nephew, Matt Campbell and family of
Tucson, Arizona.

William Melton

William E. Melton, of Eldora, died of cancer at his home on
Saturday, April 20, 2002, while under the care of the North
Central Iowa Hospice at Mason City.
Private memorial
services were held on Tuesday, April 23, at the First
Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora. A memorial
fund has been established to the North Central Iowa Hospice.
William was born on October 31, 1923, in Centralia, Illinois, to Claude
and Mabel Hinson Melton. He graduated from high school in
Centralia and attended Anderson College in Indiana a short time
before entering the service. He served in the Burma-China-India
Theater in World War II. On June 5, 1955, he married Mary Ann Alvung in Oelwein. He received his master's degree from Drake
University in Des Moines and taught music in Oregon for several
years. He taught music for 16 years in the Hampton school system
and in the mid-70s he moved to Eldora where he owned and
operated the Eldora Flower Shop with his wife for several years.
He served as choir director of many churches he attended, drove
a car for MICA, drove the COATS courtesy car, and taught
swimming lessons for the American Red Cross. He was a member of
the First Congregational United Church of Christ and a lifetime
member of Sinfonia National Music Fraternity. He was an amateur
philosopher and enjoyed history.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; two daughters, Mary Jean
Feser of Manning and Claudia Jackson of Des Moines; a son,
William and wife, Debra Mraz of Minneapolis; three sisters,
LaDonne Leyerele and Juanita Duff both of Centralia and Beverly
Jeffries and husband, Jim of Florida; a brother, Robert Lee
Melton of Centralia; six grandchildren; and his mother-in-law,
Frances Alvung of Eldora.
He was preceded in death by his
parents.

Viola Janssen

Viola Janssen, 88, of Ackley, died on Saturday, April 20, 2002,
at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, April 24, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. John's United
Church of Christ in Ackley, with burial in the Oakwood Cemetery,
Ackley. Rev. Michael Dack will officiate.
Viola was born on March 18, 1914 near Hampton, to Ray and Maude Sherer Hobson. She graduated from
the Hampton High School in 1931
and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On May
28, 1936, she married Frances Caton. She married her second
husband, Henry "Heinie" Janssen on September 30, 1961. Viola taught
school and did office work. She moved to the Presbyterian
Village in December 2000.
She was a member of PEO, Crescent
Club, Women's Club and three bridge clubs. She enjoyed fishing,
camping, traveling and gardening.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna Linne and husband,
Henry of Coralville and Patricia Barlow and husband, Charles of
Schaller; two grandchildren, Michael Barlow of Storm Lake and
Susan Barlow of Atkinson, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law, Isabelle
Hobson of Humboldt and Lois Hobson of Cherokee; and a
brother-in-law, Russell Wagner of Geneva.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; two husbands; a stillborn son; a sister,
Helen Wagner; and three brothers, Robert, John and Kenneth
Hobson.
The Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley, is in charge of

Gladys Clark

Gladys M. Clark, 89, of Radcliffe, died on Saturday,
April 20, 2002, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Services were held on Tuesday, April 23, at the Faith Evangelical
Church in Radcliffe, with burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery. Rev.
Robert Bussert officiated.
Gladys was born on January 11, 1913, to Charles and Dala Klemme Risse
northwest of Hubbard. She attended the Hubbard High School and on
January 30, 1935, she married Robert Clark. They farmed between
Hubbard and Radcliffe before buying a farm at Garden City in
1939. They retired in 1975 and moved to Radcliffe.
She was a
faithful church member and served as a Sunday School teacher,
president of the Women's Fellowship and hosted many
missionaries in her home. Gladys enjoyed cooking.
She is survived by a son, Alvin Clark and wife, Colleen of
Garden City; three daughters, Joyce Mossman and husband,
Russell of Eldora, Judy Clark of the Hampton Care Center and
Eileen Friest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; five grandsons; three
granddaughters; 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dayles
Risse of Hubbard.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; one brother, Harold Risse; and one sister, Elaine Risse.
The Boeke Funeral Home of Radcliffe, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Margo Hoyer

Margo Jayne Hoyer, 64, of Latimer, died on Saturday, April 20,
2002, on the family farm near Latimer.
Services
were held on Wednesday, April 24, at 10:30 a.m., at the Immanuel
United Church of Christ in Latimer, with burial in the Marion Center
Cemetery near Latimer. Rev. Jeff Long officiated.
Margo was born on January 7, 1938 in Hampton, to Anton and Dorothy
McKee Rother. She was raised by her father on a farm near
Alexander and graduated from the Alexander High School in 1955. She
graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City in 1956.
On October 18, 1957, Margo married Merlin Hoyer at the Hampton
Congregational Church and they made their home on a farm near
Latimer.
She was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in
Latimer, where she had served as deacon, elder, president of the
board, taught Sunday School and Bible School, sang in the choir
and was a member of Philathea. Margo was a member of the
Franklin County Hospital Auxiliary and was a 4-H Leader for
several years. She had a great zest for life and enjoyed being
outdoors.
She is survived by her husband, Merlin; a son, Mitchell and his
wife, Sherilyn of Humboldt; a daughter, Shereen Brock and
husband, Paul of Bozeman, Montana; three grandchildren, Jennifer
Hoyer of Humboldt and Brandee and Randon Brock of Baseman; a
brother, John Rother and his wife, Carolyn of Alexander; a
niece, Suzzanne Strong of Ames; and a nephew, Curtis Rother of
Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The Willim Funeral Home of Latimer, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Albert Behn

Albert Edward Behn, 89, of Hampton, died on Sunday, April
21, 2002, at his home.
Services will be held on Thursday, April 25,
at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, with burial in the
Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hampton. Rev. Kenneth Krueger
will officiate. Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 4-8:00 p.m., at
the
Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
Albert was born on May 3, 1912 at Hampton, to William and Alvina
Meyer Behn. He was educated in the Lutheran Church School at
Hampton. He married Elverta Schorling in 1939 at Sheffield.
After her death in 1979, he married Betty Miller Seeger on September
10, 1982 at Nashua. He was a farmer and owned Behn Furniture
Store in Latimer. After retirement Albert repaired vacuum
sweepers. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the
church choir and the Mason City Barbershop Chorus.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Hampton; a son, Gary and
wife, Linda of Erie, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Karen Ann Leonard and
husband, Jerry of Garland, Texas; a stepdaughter, Sandie Seeger
of Lincoln, Nebraska; a stepson, Scott Seeger and wife, Linda of
Milford; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his first wife; and two brothers, Fred and Ervin.

Alyce Porter, 89, of Iowa Falls, Passed away on Wednesday, April
24, 2002, at the Scenic
Manor, Iowa Falls.
Memorial services will be
held at
11:00 a.m., on Monday, at the Linn's Funeral Home Chapel, Iowa Falls,
with the Rev. Don Preston officiating. Inurnment will be in
the Alden Cemetery, Alden. Visitation will be one hour prior
to the services at the funeral home. Memorials may be
directed to the family and sent to her son, Jerry Porter c/o Linn's
Funeral Home, Iowa Falls.
Frederica Alyce Infelt, was born on April 29, 1912
at Alden, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Ida (Wubben) Infelt. She attended
the
Alden Community Schools and also received an Associates
Degree from Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Falls. Alyce was united in marriage to Dale Wallace Porter on April 12,
1934 at Iowa Falls, Iowa. They were later divorced on November
30, 1948. Alyce was a cook for the Junction Truck Stop Café,
rural Iowa Falls.
She loved to fish, and fish, and fish.
Alyce Porter is survived by one son, Jerry Porter and wife,
Marilyn of Oceanside, California; four grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ida Infelt;
and one son, Wayne Wallace Porter.

Beverly A. Van Sickle

Beverly A. "Hap" Van Sickle, 72, of Eldora, died from
natural causes on Thursday, April 25, 2002, at the Grundy
County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.
Following
cremation, memorial services were held on Tuesday, April 30,
at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in
Eldora, with Pastor Corey Larson and Ascension Chapter 158
of the Order of the Eastern Star officiating. Burial will be
in the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry at a later date. Memorials
may be directed to the Order of the Eastern Star or to the First
Congregational United Church of Christ.
Hap was born on September 18, 1929 in Butte, Montana, to Arch and Helen Carhill Skinner. She moved to Perry as a young girl and after
the death of her father, she was raised by her stepfather, Merle
E. Robinson. She graduated from the Perry High School in 1947. On
July 20, 1947, she married Jack "Buddy" Kinder in Perry. He died
in 1952 and Hap then married Vernon "Jack" Van Sickle on January 6,
1954 in Perry. They lived most of their married life in Eldora.
She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of
Christ, Ascension Chapter No. 158 of the Order of the Eastern
Star and the Eldora women's bowling league being inducted into
the Eldora Bowling Hall of Fame. She enjoyed fishing with her
husband and E-NP High School students and athletics.
Survivors include her husband, Jack; two daughters, Cheryl and
her husband, William Cox of Ottumwa and Myra and her husband,
Ronald Huff of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a son, Donald Kinder
and his wife, Yvonne of Eldora; a sister, Dorothy Jean Skinner
of Perry; a brother, Donald Skinner and his wife, Barbara of
Clayton, Indiana; and six grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was
her first husband, Buddy; her parents; and her stepfather.

Calvin DeVries

Calvin Jerry DeVries, 65, of Steamboat Rock,
died on Thursday, April 25, 2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal
Hospital in Iowa Falls, following a sudden illness.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, April 29, at the First Methodist Church in
Eldora, with Pastor Bruce Baillie of the First Presbyterian
Church of Steamboat Rock officiating. Interment was in the
Steamboat Rock Cemetery.
Calvin was born on September 24, 1936 in Aplington, son of Thomas and
Ella Mae Reints DeVries. He was a 1954 graduate of the Dumont High
School and a 1961 graduate of the Iowa State School of
Veterinarian Medicine. He moved to Eldora in 1961 and joined Dr.
R.R. Griffel. They became partners in 1964. On February 23, 1980,
Cal married Susan Dardis at the Presbyterian Church in Steamboat
Rock.
He was active in the community, serving on the Eldora City
Council for six years and on the chamber board for two years. He
taught Sunday School for 10 years at the Methodist Church and
coached little league for 11 years.
He is survived by his wife, Suzie of Steamboat Rock; two sons,
Douglas and his wife, Amy of Anamosa and Paul and his wife,
Beth of Ames; a daughter, Debra and her husband, Gary Oles of
Jacksonville, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Curt, Ashley, Zachary,
Elizabeth, Daniel and Jacob; and two sisters, Phyllis and her
husband, Lester Muller of Oelwein and Della and her husband,
Jim Peters of Eldora.
Preceding him in death were his parents;
two sons, Tom and David; and a granddaughter, Sarah Oles.

Gerhardt Herman Kragel, 86, of Hampton, died on Friday,
April 26, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.
Services
were held on Tuesday, April 30, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer,
with Rev. David Spleet officiating. Burial was in the St. Paul's
Lutheran Cemetery, Latimer.
Gerhardt was born on May 15, 1915 in Franklin County, to Fred and
Wilhelmina Pralle Kragel. He received his education at St.
Paul's Christian Day School in Latimer. On May 19, 1946,
Gerhardt married Vendetta Ahrens in Latimer. He was a farmer and
enjoyed traveling, fishing with his grandchildren, nature and
the outdoors. He also enjoyed singing and cooking.
Survivors include his wife, Vendetta of Hampton; three sons, Mark
and wife, Twylah of Clear Lake, Wade and wife, Jacki of
Waukee and Drew and wife, Mavis of Blairsburg; two daughters, Mary
and husband, Dick Mulkern of St. Petersburg, Florida and June and
husband, Dale Blau of Latimer; 10 grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four
brothers; five sisters; and an infant son.

Margaret Ellen Drew, 75, of Ackley, died on Friday, April 26,
2002, at her home.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, April 29, at the
St. John's United Church of Christ, Ackley, with burial in

Margaret was born on June 23, 1926 in Gary, South Dakota, to Otis O. and
Elsie Shield Rule. She graduated from the Ackley High School in
1945. On October 9, 1946, she married William Francis Drew in
Ackley. Margaret was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star
and Past Matron, a member and past officer of the PEO
Sisterhood and a member and officer of the WA-Tan-Ye Club. She
was a member of the St. John's UCC choir, a youth leader, a Girl
Scout Leader and a member of the "A" bridge club.
Survivors include her husband, Francis; two daughters, Kathy
Short and her husband, David of Hubert, North Carolina and Joan Abbas
and her husband, David of Iowa Falls; a granddaughter, Margaret Wesinmann; two grandsons, Drew Short and Ross Abbas; a
mother-in-law, Bessie Drew of Ackley; three brothers-in-law,
Lawrence Kramer of Yucaipa, California, Paul Drew of Murray, Kentucky
and Lyle Drew and his wife, Gladys of Ackley; and two
sisters-in-law, Joan Santee of Iowa Falls and Helen Drew of
Ackley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister,
Dorothy Kramer.

Dick Hempen

Diederich "Dick" Herman Hempen, 60, of
Parkersburg, died of natural causes on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at
the Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield, Minnesota.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, April 30, at the First Congregational
Church in Parkersburg. Rev. Ron Bartlett and Rev. Steve Petroelje officiated. Interment was
in the Oak Hill Cemetery,
Parkersburg.
Dick was born on September 15, 1941 in Waterloo, to Harold and Leona (Ludemann)
Hempen. He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1959. On
September 29, 1961, he married Judith Asche in Parkersburg. They
made their home in Parkersburg while Dick worked at Clay
Equipment in Waterloo. They moved to Hampton and later Eldora,
where he was custodian at the hospital. They also owned and
operated Hempen Shoes and Repair in Parkersburg, and Dick worked
for the City of Parkersburg. He later was employed at the UNI
Power Plant in Cedar Falls as a boiler operator.
He enjoyed
training to become an auctioneer. Dick played in several dance
bands and enjoyed summers in Minnesota and winters in Canada
fishing with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Judy of Parkersburg; a son, Kurt and
his wife, Jill of Parkersburg; a daughter, Kristy Lammers and
her husband, Mike of Allison; four grandchildren, Haleigh and
Keaton Hempen and Reid and Rhett Lammers; a brother, Gaylan
Hempen and his wife, Carol of Clarksville; and a sister-in-law,
Beverly Hempen of Aplington.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; and a brother, Ronald.
The Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Parkersburg, was in charge of

Ida Emma Buddenhagen, 95, of Allison, died on Saturday,
April 27, 2002, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital, Waverly.
Funeral services will be
held on Wednesday, May 1, at 10:30 a.m., at the
St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Burial will be in the
Allison Cemetery.
Ida was born on September 10, 1906 in Spring Township in Cherokee County,
to William and Caroline Miller Golnitz. She received her
education in country schools in Spring Township in Cherokee
County. On October 19, 1929, Ida married Leonard "Bud" Buddenhagen
in Iowa City. They owned the Allison Drugstore from 1950-1975. She
was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church, the Women's Club of
Allison and her church circle. She enjoyed golfing in Greene.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon and her husband, Don
Niehaus of Allison; a son, Jerold of Waukegan, Illinois; a brother,
Herbert Golnitz of Hawick, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
her husband; and a sister.

Horace Nichols

Horace Delbert Nichols, 82, of Springdale, Arkansas, formerly of
Iowa Falls, died from complications of Alzheimer's, on Sunday,
April 28, 2002, at the Clarempore Veterans Center,
Clarempore, Oklahoma.
Services will be held on Thursday, May 2, at 2:00
p.m., at the Linn's Funeral Chapel in Iowa Falls, with burial to
follow at Berlin, Jackson Township Cemetery, in Hardin County.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the
Linn's Funeral Home in Iowa Falls. Memorials may be directed to

Horace was born on January 20, 1920 at Alden, to Huber E. and Leila
Robbins Nichols. He attended the Owasa Community Schools. On
June 5, 1946, he married Velma O. Barnhart at the Cottage Church
in Hardin County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in
Springdale and the American Legion. Horace was a veteran of
W.W. II with the United States Army Air Corps as a fighter
aircraft mechanic with photo reconnaissance, fighter, and heavy
bomber groups in Africa, Sicily, Italy, Balkans and France. He
was in the plumbing and heating business in Iowa Falls,
operating Nichols Plumbing and Heating until 1973. Horace was a
boiler operator-maintenance man at Scotts Paper in Rogers, Arkansas,
until retirement.
Horace is survived by his wife, Velma of Springdale; three
sons, Tadd and his wife, Barbara of Independence, Timothy and
his wife, Marilyn of Independence and Mark and his wife, Angie of
Fayetteville, Arkansas; two daughters, Leila and her husband, Marvin
Bower of Bentonville, Arkansas and Mary and her husband, Jeff Quam of
Gentry, Arkansas; one sister, Mary Catherine and her husband, Johnny Neubauer of Alden; 12 grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.

Phyllis R. Cook, 74, formerly of Union, died on Monday, April
29, 2002, at the Valley View Nursing Center, Eldora, where she
had been a resident for the past six years.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, May 2, at 1:30 p.m., at
the
Union Community Church, with Rev. Rick Shill officiating. There
will be no visitation as her body was donated to the University
of Iowa in Iowa City. The Biersborn Funeral Home of Union, has
been entrusted with her arrangements. A memorial fund has been
established to the Union Public Library in her name.
