Marjorie Lillian Norman, 87, of Clemons, died on Friday, May
3, 2002, at her home.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, May 8, at 10:00 a.m., at the Bangor-Liberty Friends Church at
Clemons, with burial in the Eldora City Cemetery. Rev. Keith Haisch officiated.
Marjorie was born on May 17, 1914 in Jackson Township, Hardin
County, to Rollin and Florence Cross Northrup. She grew up in
the Owasa area and graduated in 1931 from the Eldora High School,
where she had taken Normal School Training. She taught rural
school from 1932-36 near Eldora. On June 14, 1936, she married
Mark Norman in Eldora and they made their home on a farm near
Clemons. She worked as a teacher and a correspondent for the
Times-Republican paper in Marshalltown.
Marjorie was a member of
the Bangor-Liberty Friends Church, Liberty Missionary Society,
DAR, Farm Bureau, Marshall County Historical and Genealogical
Societies, Central Iowa and Hardin County 4-H Camera Club and
was a 4-H Leader. She enjoyed genealogy, photography and travel.
She is survived by three daughters, Dr. Judy Svengalis
of Des
Moines, Joy Wagner and husband, Robert of St. Joseph, Missouri and Rosalee Patten and husband, William of Clemons; eight
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband in 1993; an infant daughter; and a sister.

Francis Winter

Francis Minnie Winter, 93, of Hubbard, died on Saturday, May
4, 2002, at the Hubbard Care Center.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, May 8, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. John's
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hubbard, with burial in the
Hubbard Cemetery. Rev. Matthew Rueger will officiate.
Frances was born on November 27, 1908 in Tipton Township, to Herman and
Minnie Maronn Zoske. She attended the Hubbard Community School. On
March 27, 1935, she married Henry Winter at St. John's Lutheran
Church. They farmed four miles southeast of Hubbard until moving
into Hubbard in 1966. They were married 55 years when Henry died
in 1990. Frances was an avid cook and gardener.
She is survived by a son, James and his wife, Barbara of
Hubbard; two daughters, Nancy Fisk of Phnom Penh, Cambodia and
Mary Suhr and her husband, Duane of Ankeny; nine grandchildren;
18 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Minnie Timm of
Cincinnati, Ohio, Erna Heinzeroth of Iowa Falls and Martha Wolf
of Hampton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; three brothers, Carl, William and Fred Zoske; three
sisters, Elfreida Reinert, Margaret Winter and Elsbeth Lettow;
and a great-grandson, Trenton Winter.

Raymond Menster

Raymond "Rabbit" Menster, 84, of Cascade, died on Monday,
May 6, 2002, at the Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade.
Services will be held on Thursday, May 8, at the Reiff Funeral Home
in Cascade, with burial in the Cascade Cemetery. Rev. Daniel
Krapfl will officiate.
Raymond was born on October 5, 1917, north of Cascade to Henry and
Margaret Dahlem Menster. On June 21, 1944, he married Florence
Less. He served in World War II for three and a half years,
serving in Italy with the 34th Red Bull Division and the
European-African Theater. Raymond farmed from 1945 until
retiring in 1972. He was a farmer dealer for Farmers Highbred hogs
for 40 years. His hobbies were fishing and snowmobiling.
He is survived by a son, Bill and his wife, Maureen of
Sigourney; four daughters, Becky Duvel and husband, Virg of Toddville, Donna Healy and husband, Stephen of North Liberty,
Lou Simon and husband, Irwin of Cascade and Joanie Barnard and
husband, Denny of Eldora; 14 grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three sisters,
Evelyn Peiffer of Cascade, Betty McVoy of Monticello and Carlyn
Smith and husband, Toddy of Manteca, California; and two brothers,
Charles Menster of Paradise, California and John Menster of
Cascade.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and
a brother, Floyd.

Viola Gieseke

Viola Gieseke, 81, of Aplington, died on Thursday, May
9, 2002, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington.
Services were held on
Sunday, May 12, at the Aplington Baptist Church, with interment
in the
Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington. Rev. Donald Patet officiated.
Viola was born on May 31, 1920, to Carl and Hattie Bruns Gieseke
near Aplington. She graduated from the Aplington High School. For
most of her life she lived with and took care of her father. For
a few years she worked at a seed company. She was a member of
the Aplington Baptist Church and was the church pianist for
several years and secretary of the Ladies Aid. Viola enjoyed
reading in her spare time.
She is survived by three nephews, Lee Gieseke and wife, Evelyn
of Derby, Kansas, Lowell Gieseke and wife, Gayle of Edenton,
North Carolina and Larry Gieseke and wife, Diane of Richfield, Minnesota;
and
five nieces and nephews, Mark, Lisa, Heather, Nathan and Tony Gieseke.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, LeRoy.
The
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel of Aplington, was in charge of

John Pergakis

John Pergakis, 67, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, died of lung cancer
on Saturday, May 11, 2002, at the Fairview Southdale Hospital in
Minneapolis.
Services were held on Tuesday, May 14, at the Greek
Orthodox Church in Minneapolis, and a brief memorial service was
held that evening.
John was born in Greece on October 15, 1934, and came to the United
States as a teenager to earn money for his four sisters'
dowries. He began working in his uncle's restaurant, the
Princess, in Iowa Falls, making hamburgers and mints. A few
years later he moved to the Twin Cities, but returned to Greece
for a visit and met his future wife. They were married in three
weeks and he brought her to America to live. They had two
children. He served as maitre d' at upscale restaurants in
Minneapolis and later the Decathlon Hotel and Athletic Club in
Bloomington.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Vlasis; a daughter,
Georgia; four sisters; and a brother.

Mary G. Brindle

Mary G. Brindle, 78, of Belmond, formerly of Union and
Osage, died on Sunday, May 12, 2002, at the Belmond Medical
Center.
Funeral services will be
held on Wednesday, May 15, at 1:30 p.m., at the Calvary
Baptist church in Union, with the Revs. Roger Crawford and
John Murray officiating. Interment will be in the Union
Cemetery, Union. A memorial fund has been established in her
name.
Mary was born on February 5, 1924 in Hardin County, to Burl and Mable Claybrook Rowen. She was raised and educated in the
Union-Whitten area and graduated from the the Whitten High School in
1942. Following graduation, she attended beauty school in Des
Moines and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. She was
married to George Arthur Brindle on February 20, 1949, in Union and
they farmed in the Union-Whitten area. Mary owned and operated
the O.K. Cafe in Union from 1970-1972. Following the death of
her husband in 1975, she was employed by the Marshall County
Care Facility until her retirement in 1986. She later moved to
Osage and then to Belmond in 2000.
Mary was a member of the
First Baptist Church in Osage, the Ann Judson Circle, Hubbard
American Legion Auxiliary, the Shepherd Community Club and had
been attending the First Baptist Church in Belmond.
Survivors include two sons, Charles and his wife, Cheryl of
Belmond and Duane of Missouri Valley; two daughters, Diane
Warden and Janine Lawler, both of Union; a sister, Myrna Smith
of Union; a brother, Paul Rowen of Union; 15 grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband; three brothers, Robert, William and Pete;
and
two sisters, Opal Rowen and Hazel Heryford.

Gladys Lee

Gladys Marie Lee, 78, of Hampton, died on Monday, May 13,
2002, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.
Services will be held on
Thursday, May 16, at 10:00 a.m., at the Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Hampton, with burial in the Hampton
Cemetery. Rev. Karl Bollhagen will officiate. Visitation will be one hour
prior to the services on Thursday.
Gladys was born on September 19, 1923 at rural Hampton, to Ralph and
Marie Mutzel Miller. She attended Hampton Schools and in 1964
married William Lee. She was a nurses aid and a member of the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton.
She is survived by a stepson, Jay Lee of Mason City; two
stepdaughters, Mrs. Michael Pocock of Clear Lake and Mrs. Tom Trose of Webster, Minnesota;
and one niece and one nephew.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Gary Lee Maricle; and a brother.

Thelma McFadden

Thelma Olson-McFadden, 89, a former Radcliffe resident, died
on Thursday, February 7, 2002, at her daughter's home in
Rocklin, California. Her body was cremated and returned to
Iowa.
Memorial services will be
held on Thursday, May 16, at 1:30 p.m., at the Our Savior's
Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, with interment in the
Radcliffe Cemetery.
Thelma was born on April 8, 1912 in Jewell, to Henry and Julia
Mickelson Teig. She worked at the drug store in Radcliffe and
became a licensed practical nurse and worked in Iowa City for
one year. On July 4, 1932, she married Burton Olson and he died
in 1955. She moved to California in 1963 and was a licensed
practical nurse for 14 years. On May 4, 1994, she married
Grayson McFadden and he died on December 14, 2001.
Her interests were
sewing, gardening and singing. She enjoyed writing letters, her
diary and taking pictures.
She is survived by three sons, William Olson and wife, Zola of
Radcliffe, Irving Olson and wife, Phyllis of Blue Grass and
Bruce Olson of Eldora; two daughters, Jeraldine Keyes and
husband, Thomas of Rocklin, California and Joyce Kooker and
husband, James of Ellsworth; 15 grandchildren; 39
great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two
sisters, Adeline Hudspith of Alden and Mary Ann Beck of
Sheffield.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two
husbands; three sisters; and two brothers.

Dorothy G. Newby, 91, of Iowa Falls, died on Wednesday, May
15, 2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services were held on
Monday, May 20, at the United Methodist Church in Owasa, with burial in the Eldora Cemetery.
Rev. Ward Richards Jr. officiated.
Dorothy was born on April 30, 1911 at Owasa, to Harry and Hattie
Pearce Costello. She attended and graduated from the Owasa Community
Schools and on September 13, 1928, she married George Bowman at
Marshalltown. He died in 1937, and she married Wayne Newby on
August 29, 1940, who died in 1971. She was a cook for the Owasa
Community School and a nurses' aide for the Iowa Veteran's Home
in Marshalltown and the Valley View Nursing Home in Eldora.
She is survived by a son, Jack Bowman and wife, Mary of Iowa
Falls; six grandchildren, Doug Bowman and wife, Linda of Iowa
Falls, Kurtland Bowman and wife, Judy of Plymouth, Minnesota, Dawn
Bowman and friend, Bud Crosser of Eldora, Linette Worsford and
husband, Joel of Johnston and Rick and Brett Newby-Meyer; six
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dwayne Newby; two
husbands; and a brother, Merle Costello.

Helen Sinning, 76, of Iowa Falls, died on Thursday, May 16,
2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Tuesday, May 21, at the Christian Reformed Church in Austinville, with burial in the Steamboat Rock
Cemetery.
Helen was born on April 10, 1026 at Grundy Center, to Henry and
Tillie Kannengieter Sinning. She graduated from the Steamboat Rock
Community School. She never married. Helen was employed by Welsh
Sporting Goods and Boyt Luggage, both in Iowa Falls.
She is survived by two aunts, Gertrude Ites and Gertrude
Kannengieter, both of Iowa Falls; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one
brother, Samuel Sinning.

Gertrude Borcherding, 91, of Hampton, died on Friday, May
17, 2002, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility at

Services were held on Monday, May 20, at the Trinity
Lutheran Church in Hampton, with burial in the St. Paul Lutheran
Church Cemetery at Latimer. Rev. Carl Bollhagen officiated.
Gertrude was born on July 17, 1910 in Franklin County, to Carl and
Sophia Lubekman Borcherding. She was educated in Franklin County
country schools. She was a employed as a clerk in several
stores, enjoyed sewing, crocheting and flowers. Gertrude was a
member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton.
She is survived by a brother, William Borcherding of New
Orleans, Louisiana; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; a sister; and seven brothers.

Tuesday, May 21, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel in Mason
City, with burial in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Marjorie was born on September 24, 1922, at Rolfe, to George and
Geraldine Harland Holt. She attended Mason City Schools and was
a seamstress in the area for many years.
She is survived by six children, Dennis Smiley of Cedar Falls,
Carolyn Riesen and Linda Sneed, both of Long Beach, California,
David Smiley of Chicago, Illinois, Kathy Fischer of Mitchell and
Charlotte Zieman of Ottawa, Kansas; 18 grandchildren; and 12
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
two husbands; and a brother, Richard Holt.

Jerald Brinkman

J. Jerald Brinkman, 82, of Allison, died on Friday, May 17,
2002, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Services were held on
Tuesday, May 21, at the St. James Lutheran Church in
Allison, with burial in the Allison Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Laehn
officiated.
Jerald was born on March 14, 1920 at Kesley, to Jerry and Hermina
Kappel Brinkman. He was raised at Kesley and Allison. On December
30, 1946, he married Katie Seehusen and after her death in 1970,
he married Neva Wiegmann on January 15, 1972. He was a farmer and
engaged in carpentry and painting work.
Jerald was a member of
the St. James Lutheran Church at Allison. He enjoyed reading and
outside activities.
He is survived by his wife, Neva; a son, Randy and wife, Sydney
of Allison; three daughters, Janis Lacquement and husband,
Mitch of Des Moines, Sandra Rinderknecht and husband, Gene of
West Palm Beach, Florida and Joyce Schnormeier and husband, Bill
of New Providence; a sister, Mina Toebe of Allison; seven
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; his first wife; and three brothers, Chris, Donald and
Ernest Brinkman.

Robert Newhall

Robert Daniel Newhall, 79, of Radcliffe, died of cancer on
Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Hubbard Care Center.
Services were held on
Tuesday, May 21, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Radcliffe,
with burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery. Rev. Craig Benson
officiated.
Robert was born on July 7, 1922 in Hardin County, to Lawrence and
Martha Tystahl Newhall. He graduated from the Radcliffe High School
in 1940 and on November 1, 1941, he married Herma Thorsnes at
the St.
Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. They farmed northwest of
Radcliffe and were parents of three children. He was a school
bus driver for the Radcliffe Community Schools and night supervisor
at the Eldora Training School. After the death of his wife in
1985, he married Jane Chaplin on July 11, 1990 in Nashua.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; a son, Richard Newhall and
wife, Susan of Waterloo; a daughter, Marilyn Raska-Engelson and
husband, Will of Alden; a son-in-law, Virgil Smith of Boone;
two stepsons, Virgil Chaplin of Eldora and Mike Chaplin and his
wife, Marsha of Garden City; a daughter-in-law, Judy Chaplin of
Eagle River, Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 16
great-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a brother,
Donald; a sister, Florence Groninga; a daughter, Kathleen Smith;
and a stepson, Mervin Chaplin.

Joseph Schear

Joseph C. Schear, 98, of Hampton, died on Monday, May 20,
2002, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility at Hampton.
Services will be held on Friday, May 24, at 10:30 a.m., at
the Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home in Hampton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.
Pastor David Nelson will officiate. Visitation will be on Thursday,
from 4-7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
Joseph was born on March 15, 1904 at Hampton, to Jacob and Cora Nafe Schear. He attended rural Franklin County
Schools. On September
3, 1929, he married Oneta Worley in Charles City. He worked for
many years as a mechanic for Franklin County. He was a member of
the Church of Christ at Hampton. He enjoyed making bird houses,
gardening and riding motorcycles with his grandchildren.
He is survived by four daughters, Joan Folkerts and Sharon
Schear, both of Hampton, Janet Tomkins of Livonia, Missouri and
Marilyn Nelsen of Marion; eight grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife; and two sisters.

Arnold Maakestad

Arnold Maakestad, 92, of Radcliffe, died on Wednesday, May
22, 2002.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, May 25, at the Our Savior's
Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, with burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery.
Arnold was born on August 14, 1909, to William and Martha Oakland Maakestad of Radcliffe. He attended a rural elementary school and
later Waldorf Academy and Red Wing Seminary Academy. On December 25,
1933, he married Esther Bjerkestrand and they farmed in the
Radcliffe area for most of their lives except for a short time spent
in southern Minnesota.
Arnold was active at the Our Savior's Lutheran
church in Radcliffe, serving as a Sunday School teacher and church
council member. He also served on the Iowa District Youth Committee,
and was on the Board of Directors at Bethany Manor in Story City for
12 years.
Survivors include his four children, Philip and his wife, Judie of
Renton, Washington, Ted and his wife, Nancy of Radcliffe, Rachel and her
husband, Sherman Coltvet of Rochester, Minnesota and Lois and her
husband, Clark Cary of Blue Earth, Minnesota; 14 grandchildren; 18
great-grandchildren; one brother, Theodore Maakestad of Cedar Falls;
two sisters, Verdelle Hoth and Esther Stensland, both of Radcliffe;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his
wife; his parents; brothers, John, Harry, Leonard and Wilbur Maakestad; and sisters, Ella Hovelsrud, Josie Frankenburger, Marie
Berve, Emma Smith, Alma Schwartz and Margaret Maakestad.

Robert Clifton

Robert L. "Pinky" Clifton, 71, of Boone, died of cancer on
Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the Israel Family Hospice House
in Ames.
Services will be held on
Wednesday, May 29, at 10:00 a.m., at the First Presbyterian
Church in Boone, with burial in the Grand Ridge Cemetery
north of Beaver. Rev. Dawn Carder and Dr. Richard Harken will
officiate.
Robert was born on September 5, 1930 in Ogden, to Elmer and Vera Hansen
Clifton. He graduated from the Boone High School where he led his team
to a state championship in football. On September 7, 1950, he married
Dorothy Barrow in Boone. He was offered a scholarship to the
University of Iowa where he received many honors in football. After
graduation he served in the United States Air Force and then
returned to get his master's degree while working as a member of the
freshman coaching staff at the University.
He returned to Boone
where he taught for four years, then served as principal at Madras,
Oregon, for four years. Returning to Iowa he was high school principal
at Ackley-Geneva for 22 years. He retired in 1990 and in March 2001,
the couple moved back to Boone.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Boone and
Ackley. He was a lifelong member of the Masons, the Boone Golf and
Country Club, the Elk's Club, American Legion, University of Iowa
Alumni Association, a former member of the Ackley Lions Club and
Ackley Country Club. His hobbies were golfing, woodworking and
watching football and basketball, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Boone; a son, Chris and his
wife, Karen of Cranston, Rhode Island; a daughter, Dondee Stearns and
husband, Craig of Liberty, Missouri; a foster son, Carl Teske and wife,
Anne of Waterloo; five grandchildren; a sister, June Warden and
husband, Arthur of Moline, Illinois; and a brother, Dale Cox and wife,
Bonnie of Boone.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his
stepfather, Curtis Cox; an infant daughter, Lou Ann; and a grandson,
Casey Clifton.

Hazel Dell Kreitlow, 89, of Marshalltown, formerly of
Webster City, died on Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Heritage Care
Center in Iowa Falls.
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 2:00
p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the

Hazel was born on June 14, 1912 at Springhill, to Admiral Maury and
Maude Kime Weeks. She attended and graduated from the Springhill
Community Schools in 1930. On August 22, 1936, she married Glen Dietz
and they had three children. They were later divorced and she
married Russell Kreitlow on May 25, 1957.
She was a member of
the Calvary Baptist Church in Marshalltown, Eastern Star in Webster
City, American Legion Auxiliary and Williams Thursday Tea Club.
Hazel was a cafeteria cook and Avon lady. She enjoyed reading,
crafts, gardening and shoveling snow.
She is survived by three daughters, Gwen Cox of Cypress, Texas, Bea
Abbas and husband, Ronald of Alden, Alyse Joswiak and husband,
David of Marshalltown; a stepdaughter, Sandra Fouquette and husband,
Gerald of Foley, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren;
one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Maury Weeks of Cedar
Rapids and Leland Weeks of Montclair, California; and two sisters, Lily
Foust of Garden Grove and Eva Howell of Chicago.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Russell; four sisters, Vivian
Rouse, Helen Anderson, Virginia Nelson and Ruth Pritchett; and four
brothers, William, Leonard, Fred and Robert Weeks.
The
Linn's Funeral Home of Iowa Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Laurine D. Pedersen

Laurine D. Pedersen, 97, of Hampton, died at her home on
Sunday, May 26, 2002.
Funeral service will be
held on Thursday, May 30, at 11:00
a.m., at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with burial at a
later date. Rev. Milton Eklund will officiate. Friends may call on
Wednesday, from 4-7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
Laurine was born on June 18, 1904 in Franklin County, to Nels and
Daverena Christensen. She was raised in Latimer where she received
her education. She attended Ellsworth Community College. On May 29,
1930, Laurine married Richard C. Pedersen. She was a teacher and a
member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Hampton. She enjoyed the
Hampton senior citizen center.
Survivors include a son, Orland Pedersen of Hampton; three
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband; and two grandchildren.

Deloris Albright

Deloris E. Albright, 87, of Grundy Center, died on Sunday,
May 26, 2002, at the Grundy Care Center.
Services were held on
Tuesday, May 28, at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy
Center, with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy
Center. Pastor Daniel Graham officiated.
Deloris was born on November 5, 1914 in Grundy Center, to Joseph and
Mildred Pence Albright. She graduated from the Grundy Center High School
in 1932. After graduation she was employed by the Grundy Center
Register newspaper where she worked her entire working career. She
retired in the early 1980s. She lived in Grundy Center all her life
and wrote a book that compiled Grundy Center history.
She was a
lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church and had served in
many positions. She enjoyed traveling and bowling in the league in
Grundy Center.
She is survived by a sister, Marvel Diehl of Cedar Falls; two nieces,
Sharon Smith of Waterloo and Linda VanHeiden of Iowa Falls; two
great-nieces, Jane Kugel and husband, Ken of Iowa Falls and Amy
Davis and husband, Kevin of Glendale, Arizona.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; and a brother, Edgar Albright.
The
Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Ura M. Heinzeroth, 86, of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, May
28, 2002, at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls.

Gary Hornung

Gary Alan Hornung, 58, of rural Eldora, died of Burkitt's
lymphoma leukemia on Friday, May 31, 2002, at the Ellsworth Municipal
Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Services were held on Monday, June 3, at
the Salem
United Methodist Church in Hubbard, with burial in the Hubbard
Cemetery.
Gary was born on April 18, 1944 in Inglewood, California, to Arvene and
Marjorie Thoms Hornung. He graduated from the Hubbard High School in
1962 and attended Buena Vista College, where he graduated with a
teaching degree. On August 21, 1964, he married Jane Hartman in
Hubbard. They moved to Idaho where he taught school for seven years.
In 1971, they moved back to the family farm at Hubbard to farm with
his father. In 1997, they moved to the South Fork area north of
Hubbard. Gary was a teacher, farmer and businessman. He and his wife
owned and operated Hornung Cycle Center that moved from the garage
to a thriving business in Hubbard. He also raised show cattle.
He
was a member of the Salem Methodist Church, where he served as
trustee. He enjoyed taking his family on trips to Idaho to ride
scooters.
He is survived by his wife, Jane of rural Eldora; a daughter,
Melanie Kulow and husband, Steve of Iowa Falls; a son, Troy Hornung
and wife, Tina of Hubbard; four grandchildren, Adam Kulow, Daniel
Hornung, Jordan Kulow and Dana Hornung; his mother, Marjorie Hornung
of Hubbard; two brothers, Richard Hornung of Madrid and Wayne
Hornung of Cedar Falls.
He was preceded in death by his father and
his grandparents.
The
