Mildred Moudry, 90

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Mildred A. Moudry of Cresco, Iowa, was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Mildred, 90, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at the Cresco Care Center.

Mildred A. Moudry was born Jan. 1, 1923, in Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Stika) Kacer.

On Sept. 9, 1940, she married Cyril R. Moudry in Protivin, Iowa.

Mildred enjoyed embroidery and quilting. She was excellent at cooking and baking, especially her homemade pie crusts, kolaches and rosettes. While living on the farm, she loved to tend to her chickens and work in her garden. She had a green thumb and could grow just about anything and bring anything back to life. From a seed, she grew a cactus that grew to be a few feet in height. Dancing and listening to old time music were some of her favorite leisure activities.

Mildred is survived by her son: Robert (Marie Berka) Moudry of Cresco; granddaughter: Lavon (Lt. Col. Scott) Vickery of San Antonio, Texas; and a sister Loretta Shileny of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril; her parents; and a sister: Adeline Sobolik.



Gordon Wilson, 79

CEDAR RAPIDS - Funeral services for Gordon "Gordie" F. Wilson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cedar Rapids conducted by Rev. Dave Miller. Interment was held in Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 at the funeral home.

Gordon, 79, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013 at his home.

Gordon F. Wilson was born Oct. 7, 1933 in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Gilbert and Eleanor (Leferink) Wilson. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Cresco High School in 1953. Gordie served in the United States Air Force from 1953-1957 where he did air plane maintenance. When he returned to Cresco in 1957 he worked at Kratz Motor where he was the head of the parts department.

On Sept. 21, 1958, he married Ruby Reuter at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. In 1962 they moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked for Farmstead Foods for 28 and one-half years until they closed, then worked at Quaker Oats until he retired after 10 years.

Gordie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Gordie loved to go camping, hunting, fishing and playing cards. They went on several camping trips to Alaska, California and Florida. He liked to go to Little Rock State Park by Branson and Pikes Peak State Park by McGregor. After he retired he loved to take his boat fishing at Pleasant Creek, Coralville reservoir and Lake MacBride. He also loved woodworking and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Wilson of Cedar Rapids; two daughters: Anita (Pat) Kaplan of Marion and Linda (Brian) Meyer of South Amana; two grandchildren: Stephanie and Travis Kaplan; and two sisters: Maureen Hunt of Cedar Rapids and Margaret (Bob) Bronner of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers: Donald, Gerald and Norbert.



Elaine Moudry, 92

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Elaine R. Moudry of Cresco, Iowa, was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, March 1 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services at the church.

Elaine, 92, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at the Howard Residential Care Facility.

Elaine R. Moudry was born July 1, 1920, in rural Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of Stephen W. and Mabel (Armstrong) Kratz. Her family moved to Cresco when she was a young child after her father passed away. She graduated from Cresco High School. She worked as a waitress at the Elm Street Cafe and also at Lind photography studio.

On June 5, 1945, she married Leonard G. Moudry and they made their home on the family farm south of Cresco, moving for a short time to the Chester area and then returned to a farm north of Cresco. She was a homemaker and helped her husband with the farming and raising her family.

She liked visiting or caring for her grandchildren, playing cards, traveling and bowling. She bowled on several leagues and won many awards and honors for her high bowling average.

She is survived by two daughters: Suzanne (Wayne) Ryan of Cresco and Donna (Allan) Larson of Naperville, Illinois; five grandchildren: Stacey (Lisa) Ryan, Brenda (Donnie) Blaess both of Cresco, Eric (Juliet) Larson of San Francisco, California, Sara (Andy) Voller of Plano, Illinois, and Shay (Derrick) Brown of Plainfield, Illinois; 10 great-grandchildren; and five nieces: Marcia Fisher, Pat Jewel, Eva J. Klausner, Rebecca Dux and Betty Kupka.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979; her parents; two sisters: Gladys (Arthur) Eggen and Vivian (Harvey) Eggen; one niece: Carol Ward: two nephews: Don Eggen and Dean Eggen; and one sister-in-law: Marcella Tlusty.


David Larson, 94

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for David "Dave" T. Larson of Cresco, Iowa, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, March 8 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

David, 94, died Monday, March 4, 2013 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, where he had resided for the past four months. He was a Cresco resident for 60 years.

David Thor Larson was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Milan, Minn., the son of Hans and Anna (Nielsen) Larson. He graduated from Riceville High School and Luther College in Decorah.

On June 4, 1941, he married Vera Benson in Riceville. Dave served in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1941-1945 in the Pacific Theater.

Dave was an avid golfer, bowler, and a member of the VFW, Knights of Columbus, Elm Street Singers, Small Business Administration SCORE chapter and former Boy Scout leader for many years.

Dave was a familiar face at Cresco Union Savings Bank, where he worked for more than 40 years. He also was a school teacher and insurance agent in his early career. He and Vera raised their family in Riceville and Cresco and were the parents of Jon (Sharon), Allan (Donna), Mark (Janet), Anne, Jean (Roger) Giffen and Jim (Brenda) Larson. Dave is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; his parents; two brothers; and a sister.


Caroline Praska, 92

PROTIVIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Caroline Praska of Protivin, Iowa, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Interment will be held in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, with a wake service to follow at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Caroline, 92, died Monday, March 4, 2013 at the Cresco Care Center.

Caroline Praska was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Howard County, the daughter of Joseph and Louisa (Pecinovsky) Shimak. Caroline attended country schools in the Protivin area.

On Nov. 17, 1942, she married Leonard Praska at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. She spent many years as a farm wife, assisting with chores and helping in the field.

Caroline loved to bake for her family. She also enjoyed sewing quilts and doing embroidery, which she learned when she was a young girl going to country school and continued through her stay at Cresco Care Center. Caroline was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. She also was a 75-year member of the Western Fraternal Life Association, Lodge 85.

She is survived by three sons: Lawrence (Sylvia) of Bondurant, Iowa, Marv (Jan) of Cresco, and Dale (Kay) of Gillette, Wyoming; a daughter: Rita Forker of Grundy Center, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Irene Shimak and Irene O'Brien; and brother-in-law: Lester (Ruth) Praska.

Caroline was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; her parents; granddaughter: Renee Praska; great-granddaughter: Lauren Blanchard; two brothers: Clarence and Charles Shimak; and Charles' wife, Irene; son-in-law: Ben Forker; brothers-in-law: Amby O'Brien and Joseph Berka; and sister-in-law: Georgine Berka.


Elaine Michel, 80

HARMONY, MN - Memorial services for Elaine Michel of Harmony, Minn. were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the Harmony Manor where she resided for the past 10 years.

Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Elaine, 80, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at the Harmony Nursing Home.

Elaine Michel was born on May 19, 1932 in Harmony, Minn., the daughter of James and Elsie (Bigalk) Johnson.

Joseph Polaschek, 67

SALINAS, CALIFORNIA - Joseph J. Polaschek, 67, of Salinas, Calif. died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 from complications after surgery. Joe's wish was that his body be donated to Stanford University in Stanford, Calif. for medical study. He requested that he be given a "Celebration Of His Life" with his immediate family instead of a funeral.

Joseph J. Polaschek was born in Sleepy Eye, Minn. He lived with his family in Cresco for many of his formative years and graduated from Assumption Grade School and then with high honors from Notre Dame High School in 1964. After graduation, he worked at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. in the Research Dept. alongside Dr. Jennifer Jowsey studying osteoporosis. While working at the clinic, he received his draft notice. It was the time of the Vietnam Crisis, and so he decided to enlist into the Army Security Agency as he wanted to study the Russian language at the Presidio in Monterey, Calif.

With two years of this completed study, he was sent to Chitose, Japan for the remainder of his enlistment. After his discharge, he and his wife moved to Portland, Ore. where he worked as a manager at St. Vincent's Hospital and then eventually found himself working for a company called, "Project Health" which was to become a model for what has become the HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) insurance programs of today.

He spent 30 plus years doing medical contracting and building relationships with various Medical Health Plans on the East and West coast. He continued going to school and eventually earned his PHD in Theology.

Everyone he worked with loved his sense of humor and respected his work ethic.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Jeanne (Chvatal) Polaschek; five children; 10 grandchildren; a brother: Neil and wife Joneil of Decorah, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who reside locally around the Cresco area.


Victor Langreck, 91

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Victor A. Langreck of rural Cresco, Iowa, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco with a scripture service to follow. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Victor, 91, died Sunday, March 10, 2013 at his rural Cresco home.

Victor Aloysius Langreck was born Jan. 25, 1922, in rural Fayette County near St. Lucas, Iowa. He was the fifth of 11 children of John and Catherine Langreck, with three brothers and seven sisters. He attended St. Luke's Catholic School.

Victor enlisted in the U.S. Army on Dec. 28, 1943. He served in battle in Northern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe during WWII including the Battle of the Bulge. He ended his service on March 28, 1946 ranking as Staff Sergeant. He was awarded three overseas service bars: European, African, and Middle Eastern campaign medal with four bronze battle stars, a good conduct medal and a WWII victory medal.

After military service he went to school in Omaha, Neb. for TV repair.

Victor married Eva Busack on Jan. 17, 1948 and worked for Western Bell Telephone Company in Red Oak, Iowa before moving to St. Lucas and the family farm for one year. In 1949 he moved to Cresco at the same time his brothers Ray and Leo moved to their farms just north and south from his. In 1957 he moved to Milwaukee, Wis. where he worked for Allis Chalmers in the research lab before moving back to the farm in 1962 and what would be his home in rural Cresco for the next 50+ years.

In retirement Victor enjoyed taking bus trips with CUSB, visiting with friends at the meal site, going to the public library where he would check out many magazines to stay up on current events and smoking his pipe. He enjoyed the many visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved visiting the farm and the experiences that came with them. Even through a broken leg last year, he vowed to return to his beloved home on the farm.

Victor is survived by his daughter: Barbara (Tim) Murphy of Broken Arrow, Okla.; son: Kevin (Sara) Langreck of Waverly: six grandchildren: Karina (Eric) Shoemaker of Tulsa, Okla., Kristopher (Mickala) Murphy of Tulsa, Okla.; Carter Langreck, Cody Langreck, Cayden Langreck and Carynn Langreck all of Waverly; four great-grandchildren: Austin Shoemaker, Alex Shoemaker, Arianna Shoemaker and Tinley Murphy all of Tulsa, Okla.; siblings: Josephine Heying of West Union, Theresa Zipsie of Blooming Prairie, Minn., Colette Ameling of West Union, Dolores Buchheit of St. Lucas, Roger Langreck of St. Lucas, and Joyce Zoulek of Calmar. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Lena Pitzenberger of New Hampton and Lucy McNamara of Eagle Rock, Mo.; and brothers: Leo Langreck of Cresco and Ray Langreck of Cresco.


William Bouska, 72

RICEVILLE - William E. "Bill" Bouska, age 72, formerly of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Riceville Family Care Center in Riceville, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 407 Woodland Ave., Riceville, Iowa. Burial will be held at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Riceville, Iowa.

William E. Bouska was born Sept. 18, 1940 in Schley, Iowa, the son of William F. and Esther (Duneman) Bouska. Bill farmed, worked for Ingersoll Implement, and Featherlite in Cresco. After his wife died, Bill's family took care of him at home. He resided at Country Winds Manor, formerly Howard Residentail Care Facility, for five years. Due to declined health he made his home at Riceville Family Care Center since the Fall of 2011.

He is survived by his children: Tim (Annie) Bouska of Rome, N.Y., Tom (Tamra) Bouska of Yorktown, Va., Jodi (Jeff) Kinney of Elkton, Minn., and Julie (fiance Glenn Allen) Bouska of Cresco; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister: Kathy Bouska of Cresco.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife: Patricia; his parents; and a sister: Marion Scoles.


Eldie Peterson, 74

CRESCO - Eldie J. Peterson, 74, died Saturday, March 9, 2013 at home in Cresco. According to her wishes, Eldie's body was gifted to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program.

Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Eldie J. Peterson was born Sept. 14, 1938 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Norma (Engen) Flatland. She attended elementary and high school in Canton, Minn., graduating in 1956.

On June 8, 1957, Eldie married Alton Peterson in Las Vegas, NV. After many years in the banking industry in Los Angeles and San Francisco area, Eldie and Alton moved to Paso Robles, Calif. In Paso Robles Eldie worked for many years as an Administrative Assistant for a Homeowners Association. When she retired from her job as an Administrative Assistant, Eldie and Alton moved to Cresco in 2004.

She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed getting together with friends and family to play cards or Farkel. Eldie was an excellent cook and was fond of helping organize the extended families annual "Lefsa Bake."

Eldie is survived by her husband, Alton of Cresco; sons: Kerry Peterson of Lexington, Ky. and Mark (Ronda) Peterson of Paso Robles, Calif.; daughter: Julie Ringer of Cresco; five grandchildren; sisters: Naomi Gossman of Cresco, Bonnie Krogstad of Spring Grove, Minn., Sue (Ed) Fontes of Cresco; sisters-in-law: Beulah Shindelar of Spillville, Lorraine Ellickson of Murrieta, Calif., Wanda Flatland; brother-in-law: Robert (Diane) Peterson of Cedar Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; father and mother-in-law; brothers: Kenny and Jesse; brothers-in-law: Herb Gossman, Blaine Roberts, Leonard Moudry, John Shindelar, and Merv Krogstad; sisters-in-law: Margaret (Drake) Flatland and Sylvia (Peterson) Roberts.

Sophie Busta

SALINAS, CALIFORNIA - Funeral services for Sophie Busta of Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, Canada, formerly of Protivin, Iowa were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2013 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Moose Jaw. Interment was held in Rosedale Cemetery.

Prayers were held on Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m. at Parkview Funeral Chapel in Moose Jaw.

Sophie died Friday, March 8, 2013 at Foyer d Youville Care Facility in Gravelbourg SK. She was transferred from Moose Jaw Union Hospital to the care facility after a short illness.

Sophie married Charlie Busta on Jan. 15, 1940. They farmed near Protivin, Iowa for 27 years. In 1967 they moved to Canada. As Sophie would often say they embarked on a new adventure. They settled on a farm at Stony Beach north of Belle Plaine, Saskatchewan. They became Canadian citizens a few years later. After 10 years of farming Charlie became ill and passed away in 1977.

Sophie was active at St. Joseph's Church assisting with funerals and other functions with the CWL. Sophie enjoyed playing cards, keeping up with daily news (especially provincial politics), reading novels, enjoyed short stories and loved cheering for the Roughriders and Blue Jays. She baked many loaves of rye bread for her family. Cats were her favorite animal, and she had many pets over the years.

Sophie and Charlie were the parents of 12 children with 10 surviving. Joe (Elsie) Busta, Genevieve (Robert) Wagner both living in Iowa, Harriet (Gerald) Mortimer, Bernadette Busta both of Regina, Norbert (Marjorie) Busta of Moose Jaw, Rosalind (Boris) Holowaty of Saskatoon, Laura (Dale) Budd of Spiritwood, Charlie (Deb) Busta of Alberta, Mary Cook (Jim Stenhouse) of Alberta, Tom (Lisa) Busta of Moose Jaw; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; one brother: Ralph (Dolores) Pecinovsky of Protivin, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sophie was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph and Anna Pecinovsky; two sisters: Adella (John Martinek) and Evelyn (Bill) Pecinovsky; one brother: Joe (Mildred) Pecinovsky; and two brothers who died in infancy.


Sandra Kolodziej, 69

NASHUA - Memorial services for Sandra K. Kolodziej of Nashua, Iowa, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua. Private family interment will take place at a later date.

Friends may greet the family an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua is handling the arrangements.

Sandra, 69, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Sandra Kay Koldziej was born April 2, 1943 in Baltimore, Md., the daughter of Niels and Christine (Haag) Hvitved. She received her education in Nashua and graduated from the Nashua High School in 1961. Following graduation, she worked a couple years in Iowa and then moved to California to find work. She initially did some data processing before landing a job with G.T.E., a communications company in San Jose. She remained with the company until retiring in 1996.

On March 21, 1987, in Carson City, Nev., she married Tom Kolodziej. The couple has made their home near Nashua since 1996.

Sandra had a deep love for animals and had several horses, cats, dogs and goats which she enjoyed caring for. She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church where she had previously been an organist and was a choir member. She looked forward to her monthly meetings of the Bradford Home Makers. Sandra would travel around visiting friends and was always up for any adventure.

She loved spending time doing all sorts of arts and crafts. Going to the park in Nashua by the river and drawing the scenery was always a joy for her. She loved doing stain glass, ceramics and embroidery and had a passion for trying out new recipes and adapting them to suit her tastes. Sandra loved spending time with her great nieces.

Survivors include her husband: Tom of Nashua; one brother: Linn (Connie) Hvitved of Cresco; one niece: Angela (Damian) Dalle Nogare; one nephew: Aaron (Missy) Hvitved; and two great nieces and nephews: Mayrn and Brynlie Hvitved.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents.


Joseph Bruns, 77

ELMA - Memorial services for Joseph L. "Joe" Bruns of Elma, Iowa, formerly of Cresco, Iowa will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at First Congregational Church in Cresco with Pastor Tim Sir officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Joe, 77, died Monday, March 18, 2013 at Colonial Manor in Elma.

Joseph L. Bruns was born Nov. 20, 1935 in Hudson, Iowa, the son of Louis and Cecilia (Gisler) Bruns. Joe graduated from Hudson High School in 1955.

On August 22, 1955, he married Janice "Jan" Pierce. He was employed as a chef, by trade, at country clubs and supper clubs. Joe enjoyed being outdoors, watching sports, and volunteering as a Scout Leader for several years. He was a wonderful singer, having the opportunity to sing at his children's weddings. Joe and Jan loved to spend their time together dancing to big band music.

Joe is survived by his wife, Jan of Cresco; sons: Jeff of Cresco, Paul (Tina) of Cresco, Jay (Karen) of Elma, John (Pam) of Greenfield, Iowa; his daughters: Jolene Melver of Sumner, Iowa and Allison (Merlin) Balik of Cresco; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers: Charles of Waterloo, Iowa and Steve of Hudson; and sister: Ann Niedert of Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: LaVonne Welsh; brother: Jerome; and son-in-law: James "Jim" Melver.


Anna O'Brien, 84

ELMA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Anna M. O'Brien of Elma, Iowa, was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Father Steve Garner officiating. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Elma.

Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, March 15 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma with a 4:30 p.m. Rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Scriptural Wake Service. Visitation continued at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Anna, 84, died Monday, March 11, 2013 at Colonial Manor in Elma.

Anna Marie O'Brien was born Dec. 26, 1928, at home near Schley, Iowa, the daughter of William and Alice (Green) Shock.

She worked at Woolworth's in Waterloo until she married Edward O'Brien on June 3, 1947 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. Anna helped her husband farm near Acme for 21 years. Later, the couple moved to a farm west of Elma where they farmed for 31 years and the farm is now the Produce Auction facility. Upon retirement in 1999, they moved to Elma. Anna loved to feed the community with her garden produce. She also enjoyed polka dancing, music, playing cards and driving Mennonite families. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and Immaculate Conception Rosary Society.

Anna is survived by her children: Patricia (Donald) Loomer of Sumner, Iowa, Janiece (Randy) Pickar of St. Ansgar, Iowa, Dennis (Ann) O'Brien of Elma and Daniel (Barbara) O'Brien also of Elma; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Dewayne and Elizabeth Kruger of Waterloo; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward in 2005; her parents; five brothers: Charley, John, Bob, Ray and Bill; and one sister: Alice Urban.


Daniel Provost, 46

COLORADO - Daniel J. Provost, 46, dies in Colorado.

Daniel Joseph Provost was born April 6, 1966 in Southbridge, Mass., the son of Robert and Marcia (Monnett) Provost. Dan spent a short time of his childhood in Massachusetts. Then at an early age the family moved to Colorado. He attended school in Denver and later in Carbondale, Colo. He was married in 1987.

Dan and his family moved to Iowa in 1990 where he worked as a welder for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors, helping his kids learn how to use tools, constructing and deconstructing anything, camping, and anything with a motor. He returned to Colorado in 2007 to be closer to his parents and siblings.

He is survived by two children, a daughter: Brittany (Justin) Ryan; a son: Clayton Provost; his mother: Marcia Provost; his father: Robert Provost; a sister: Mary Cathleen (David) Oyer; brothers: Tom (Jodi) Provost and Matt (Kathy) Provost; one nephew: Travis Provost; two aunts: Claire (Provost) Cervans and Carol (Monnett) Bourbeau; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his sister in infancy: Laurena Provost; his maternal grandparents: Leo and Doris Monnett; his paternal grandparents: Roger and Lorene Provost; and his aunt: Esther Provost.


Richard Milz, 68

GREENWOOD, MO - A Funeral Mass for Richard Milz of Greenwood, Mo. was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 11 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Kansas City, Mo.

Visitation was held at 10 a.m. on March 11 an hour before services at the church.

McGilley Antioch Chapel in Kansas City, Mo. handled the arrangements.

Richard, 68, died Wednesday, March 6, 2013.

Richard Milz was born July 30, 1944 in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Jessie Milz. He graduated from Crestwood Public High School in 1962. He worked for Kansas City Southern Railroad Company most of his life, retiring on his birthday in 2004.

Richard married his wife Anita on Jan. 4, 1998.

He was an avid Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He enjoyed taking vacations with his wife Anita and very special granddaughter, Ashleigh.

Richard is survived by his wife Anita; brothers: Donald Milz (Sharon); Gerald Milz (Colleen); Joseph Milz (Teresa); sisters: Marilyn O'Shea (John); Judy Chrisman; Jeanne Hruska (Dennis); sister-in-law: Diane Milz; step sons: Jason Love and Jeffrey Love; granddaughter: Ashleigh DiMattina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother: Wayne Milz.

Judy, 70, died Saturday, March 16, 2013 at the Sunrise Cottages in Rochester, Minn. from complications with Alzheimer's Disease.

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Andrew D. "Andy" Stika of Peoria, Illinois. formerly of Cresco, Iowa, will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Father Daniel Knipper officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26 at Heritage Events Center in Cresco with a scripture wake service at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Andy, 24, lost his battle with cancer on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Andrew David Stika was born Sept. 1, 1988 at Regional Health Services of Howard County, the son of Dennis and Carol (McCarville) Stika. Andy is a 2007 graduate of Crestwood High School and a 2011 graduate of Iowa State with a degree in Civil Engineering. His degree brought him to be a hard-working Marketing Representative at Caterpillar in Peoria, Illinois. While he was at Iowa State he loved to be in the group Steel Bridge Club; his group competed in competitions and Andy's group received high honors at Regionals and Nationals.

Andy, also known as "Stix", loved to do many things with family and friends. He loved to go camping, fishing, 4-wheeling, and snowmobiling. Andy was also known for being a good dancer, he loved to dance. He was active in 4-H his younger years, he showed cattle, pigs, and made lots of woodworking and visual arts projects. As people know Andy was one of the biggest Green Bay Packers and Iowa State Cyclones fan that someone could ever possibly be. He loved to cheer for his teams!

During his time with cancer he began to pick up old hobbies like building Legos and model cars; he just added to his collection, which has grown to be very big.

Andy was a very caring, loving, and understanding guy. He was nice to everybody and was never scared to talk to strangers. When Andy found out he had cancer, he had a very strong outlook on things. From day one he wanted to beat this. Andy was a fighter and was never going to give up and always prayed for a miracle. He fought till his last breath. Andy is a strong, very passionate guy for his family, friends, and when he went to work at Caterpillar. Even though he was sick and went through chemotherapy; he always continued to go back to work. He worked as hard as he could, and do as much as he could possibly do. Because of his dedication to his work, Caterpillar gave Andy an award for his work that showed strength, determination, and positive attitude. The prefix "NDY" which say Andy at its core will be the next prefix on a Track-Type Tractor. He was honored to get this award.

Andrew is survived by his parents: Dennis and Carol Stika of Cresco; siblings: Cody (Kari Wester) of Paullina, Iowa, Casey of La Porte City, Iowa, and Kelsey of Mason City, Iowa; grandparents: Leland "Bud" and Jean McCarville of Cresco, and Edith Stika of Protivin, Iowa; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather: Edmund Stika; and one uncle: David Stika.


Selma Iverson, 80

CRESCO - Funeral services for Selma G. Iverson of Cresco, Iowa, were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Visitation was held from 3-7 p.m. on Monday, March 25 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation continued one hour prior to services at the church.

Selma, 80, died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.

Selma Gwendolyn Iverson was born Oct. 10, 1932, north of Ridgeway, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Angeline (Anderson) Benson. She was baptized on Nov. 6, 1932 and confirmed on Jan. 4, 1948. She attended the country school house near her home and high school in Ridgeway. She was the organist at the Orleans Lutheran Church in her teen years and retired from that when their fifth child was born.

On Oct. 18, 1950, she married Lauren H. Iverson in the Orleans Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with seven children; Daryl, Debra, Deann, Doreen, Denise, Darlene, and David. They farmed for 17 years.

In January of 1968, they purchased the Hovden Grocery Store in Ridgeway. In 1970 they moved to Davis Corners, and she worked as the secretary at State Farm Insurance in Cresco. They became members of First Lutheran Church in Cresco. She served as secretary of the Church Council and in July of 1973 they moved to New Hampton and lived there for 13 years. They joined the Trinity Lutheran Church and Selma was a member of the choir. She worked with her husband in construction, and for Mel Reicks in interior decorating and finishing. She also worked at Meinertz Creamery for a short time, and in the quality control department at Sara Lee. In the spring of 1978 she began her beloved Selma's Bridal Boutique business and sold it in the fall of 1984.

In 1985 they moved back to Cresco, spending time with her parents and children, also enjoying her sewing, quilting, alterations of wedding gowns, and First Lutheran church activities.

Selma's biggest pride and joy was her family: Daryl (Cat - deceased) of Jerico, Debbie (Larry) Peterson of Rochester, Minn., Deann (Galen) Staley of New Hampton, Doreen (Rod) Ellingson, Protivin, Denise (Christian) Miller of Cresco, Darlene (Randy) Anderson of New Hampton, and David (special friend Donna Smith) of New Hampton; 18 grandchildren: Brian (Maureen) Peterson, Dean (Jessica) Peterson, Jason Landswerk, Justin (Marcy) Landswerk, Jennifer (Loren) Scheidel, Angeline Doyle, Jess (Nichole) Ellingson, Ross (Emily) Ellingson, Beth (Kory) Huber, Dana Kitchen, Jay (Britni) Anderson, Jill Anderson, Kelly (Jeff) Drilling, Gayle (Joseph) Ciechanowski) Anderson, Chelsey Iverson, and Cody Iverson; two step-grandchildren: Ben (Heather) Staley and Teri Miller; 14 great-grandchildren: Collin and Campbell Landswerk, Hayden and Sydney Landswerk, Wyatt, Lauren and Isabella Scheidel, Rhiannon, Danielle and Olive Ellingson, Adyson and Iver Ellingson, and Grady and Gavin Huber; one step-great-grandson: Patrick Mullay; a sister: Ardith (Dennis) Wessels; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Alton and Ruthie Iverson and Merlin and Carol Iverson; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Lauren; her parents; one brother: Andy Benson; a niece: Shelly Wessel; and a daughter-in-law: Boonmak (Cat) Iverson.

Rusty, 91, died Monday, March 25, 2013 at the Cresco Care Center where he has resided for the past 13 months.

Russell Adrian Barnes was born March 14, 1922, in Schley, Iowa, the son of Michael and Verona (Novak) Barnes. He went to country school near Schley and was an altar boy at Holy Cross Parish in Schley. Rusty graduated from Notre Dame High School in Cresco. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and learned to fly in Kilgore, Texas. He was also stationed at Great Lakes Naval Academy in Chicago, Illinois, and New Port, Rhode Island, where he was medically discharged on Dec. 3, 1943.

On May 17, 1948, he married Dorothy R. Hertges at Ossian DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa. They raised their family in Cresco and were the parents of Rebecca (Clair - deceased) Patterson of Northwood, Iowa, John (Theresa) Barnes of Cresco, Michaeleen (John) Swanson of Lakeville, Minnesota, Colleen (Kevin) Crow of Cresco and Daniel (Sue) Barnes of Adams, Minnesota.

Rusty and Dorothy were avid fishermen and spent most weekends on the Mississippi River. Rusty worked for Coast to Coast in Cresco, B&G Automotive in Cresco and later for Cresco City Hall. He was a member of the Cresco Wildlife Club and of the American Legion in Cresco and helped with many fish fries and bingo stands.

Rusty is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his five children and thirteen grandchildren: Mike (Lisa) Patterson, Janna (Chad) Arndt, Jeremy Barnes, Sarah (Kilyn) Nuehring, Jacob Swanson, Michaela Swanson, Charlie Swanson, Jeffrey Crow, Stefanie Crow, Amber (Josh) Flatness, Cody (fiance Samantha) Barnes, Cameron Barnes and Delanie Barnes; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister: Celeste Murphy of Bountiful, Utah; and four sisters-in-law: Virginia Barnes of Clinton, Iowa, Velma Hertges of Waterloo, Iowa, Gladys Wolfe of Decorah, Iowa and Theresa Hertges of Ossian, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law: Clair Patterson; seven brothers: Harry, Cornelius, Kenneth, Edmund (Cappie), Virgil (infant), Cyrus and Mark; five sisters: Inez Springer, Winifred Bily, Delores Brunni, Georgina Kovarik and Darlene Thompson; also by many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.


Marguerite Lange, 90

Marguerite, 90, died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Harmony Health Care in Harmony.

Marguerite J. Lange was born Sept. 16, 1922 in Ridgeway, Iowa, the daughter of John and Ethel (Makepeace) Hovey. She graduated from Ridgeway High School with Normal Training Certification. She taught for a few years in Howard County.

On May 30, 1945 she married Elmer Lange at Big Spring Lutheran Church. They lived their entire married life in rural Harmony and were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Big Spring. She lived in the Harmony Apartments from 2000 to October of 2012 when she entered the Nursing Home.

In her spare time Marguerite enjoyed puzzles, quilting and making beautiful embroidery items.

Marguerite is survived by one daughter: Ramona (Rodney) Grooters of Wake Forest, North Carolina; two granddaughters: Rachel (Richard) Westover of Greensboro, North Carolina and Renee (Andy) Chatellier of Wilmington, North Carolina; and a sister: Rita Walton of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer on June 3, 2000; and her parents.


Ethel Chick, 85

CHESTER - Funeral services for Ethel (Bastian) Chick of Chester, Iowa were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013 at the United Lutheran Church in Chester with Pastor Dan Christensen officiating.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Ethel, 85, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

Ethel Chick was born Dec. 16, 1927 in Lime Springs, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Bertha (Payne) Fisher.

On July 4, 1945 she married Alfred C. Bastian in Austin, Minn. To that union four children were born. He preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 1982. She later married Donald E. Chick on Dec. 30, 1985 in British Columbia, Canada. He preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 1998.

Early in her life Ethel worked at Sundstrand Aviation in Rockford, Ill. moving to Chester in 1970. In 1973 she set up a Ceramic Studio in Chester which she operated until 1985. She also worked at Donaldson's until 1985 when she moved to Canada to marry Donald Chick, she returned back to Iowa in 1988.

Ethel enjoyed crocheting, painting, quilting, gardening, walking and travelling.

Ethel is survived by four children: Gaylen (Patricia) Bastian of Rockford, Illinois, Bonnie Lou Ruud of Lime Springs, Robert (Ginger) Bastian of LeRoy, Minnesota, and Cheryl (Carl) Miller of Chester, Iowa; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 step-children: Dale (Jeri) Chick, Rollyce (Carl) Nichols and Randy (Ann) Chick all of Oregon; a sister: Evelyn (Carl) Keich of California; and a sister-in-law: Maryann Fisher of Ionia, Iowa.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Donald W. "Bud" Kach of Cresco, Iowa, were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment will be held at a later date in New Oregon Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 1-3 p.m. at the funeral home on Saturday.

Donald, 91, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Donald W. Kach was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Howard County, the son of Ernest and Emma (Lewis) Kach. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

Bud married Phyllis Halse, and he farmed throughout most of his life together with his wife. After retiring from farming, Bud and Phyllis moved into Cresco. He enjoyed visits to the casino to try his luck. Bud also took pleasure in playing cards and visiting with people. He could talk anybody's ear off, whether they wanted to listen or not.

Bud is survived by his sons: Doug (Mary) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Terry (Tracy) of Des Moines, Iowa, Mark (Jane) of Bakersfield, California, and Randy of Albert Lea, Minn.; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his parents; and sisters: Irene Brenno, Mabel Balk, and Percy Kach.

Beatrice Kohles, 91

ELMA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Beatrice M. Kohles of Elma, Iowa, was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes, Iowa with Father Steve Garner officiating. Interment was held in Our Lady of Lourdes Church Cemetery in Lourdes. Honorary pallbearers were: John Kohles, Logan Kohles, Michele McKinnon, Lori Stewart, Heather Bunton, Shereen Ries and Kimberly Wiepert. Pallbearers were: Michael Ries, Jeff Biwer, Joshua Tweeten, Jacob Tweeten, Tyler Tweeten, Paul Kohles, Amanda Hageman and Shelly Howe.

Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, March 22 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to services at the church.

Beatrice, 91, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Beatrice Mary Kohles was born Jan. 11, 1922, in Lourdes, Iowa, the daughter of James and Anastacia (Ludwig) Havlik. She attended country school near Lourdes. Later she worked at an ammunition factory in Des Moines during WWII.

On May 29, 1944, she married Alfred Peter Kohles at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. They farmed and raised their family near Lourdes. The couple retired in the early 90s and moved into Elma. Beatrice worked at Colonial Manor for several years.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Rosary Society and the Elma American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, trips to the casino, traveling with family, and helping family and friends.

Beatrice is survived by her children: Donna (Al) Biwer of Elma, Mary Lou (Gary) Ries of Ionia, Iowa, Linda (Bill) Tweeten of Joice, Iowa, Ronald Kohles of Waterloo, Iowa and Julie (Mike) Huber of Rochester, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Tillie Havlik of Elma, Barb Havlik of New Hampton, Rosie Merrick of Jesup, Iowa, Anna Jean Sullivan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Rita Thompson of Riceville; brother-in-law: Warren Wyatt of Riceville; and several nieces and nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred who died May 5, 2000; son: Gary Joseph; daughter: Betty Jo; her parents; and brothers: Joseph, Edward, Francis and James.
