Roger Brookins, 69

CRESCO - Roger D. Brookins, 69, of Cresco died Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 at home.

Visitation was held from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at the Heritage Events Center in Cresco. American Legion Post #605 of Protivin accorded military rites at 7 p.m.

Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Roger Dean Brookins was born Sept. 24, 1944, in Chickasaw County, Iowa, the son of Robert and Isabell (Drewelow) Brookins. He worked at John Deere before joining the United States Army.

On April 23, 1966, he married Elaine Clark in Decorah. Since retiring from active dairy farming, Roger still enjoyed working at the Cresco Sale Barn and Farmer's Mill. Roger was a member of the American Legion Post #605 of Protivin, DHIA, and Howard County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed playing cards and scrabble, watching NASCAR, camping, and listening to polka music. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, and attending grandchildren's sporting events and various activities.

Roger is survived by his wife, Elaine of Cresco; his children: Lucinda (Mike) Yslas of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Barry Brookins of Dyersville, Aaron Folkert of Mantorville, Minnesota, Elizabeth (Kip) Powers of Cresco, and Hilory (Craig) Harding of Stockbridge, Georgia; grandchildren: Kara Yslas, Adam and Avery Powers, Abigail and Kameron Folkert, and Emma and Sarah Harding; step grandchildren: Kayleigh Hock, Jessica Yslas, Brittany and Dustin Shaw; step great-grandchildren: Bentley Kidwell, Nolen and Aspen Nelson, Spencer, Alden and Lewis Shaw, and Cayden Yslas; his brothers: Art (Doris) of Chatfield, Minnesota and Joe (Georgiann) of Ellendale, Minnesota; sisters: Valerie Pettit of Coralville, Judy Brookins of Platteville, Wisconsin, Joann (Ron Lechtenburg) Brookins of Ionia, Alberta (John) Linneman of Mt. Hope, Wisconsin, and Bonnie Brookins of Washington, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his father and mother-in-law: Joseph and Martha Clark.

Frank Puffer, 92

SPILLVILLE - Mass of Christian Burial for Frank Puffer of rural Spillville, Iowa will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Interment will be held in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church Cemetery in Spillville.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 6 at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a scripture service at 5 p.m. There will also be visitation after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday morning at the funeral home.

Frank, 92, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at his home.

Frank Puffer, 92

SPILLVILLE - Mass of Christian Burial for Frank Puffer of rural Spillville, Iowa was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Lectors were Carmen Broadbent, Danielle Fitzpatrick, and Terese Ragaller. Doris Thompson was the organist and Dan Silhacek was soloist. St. Wenceslaus Choir sang and Jim Busta provided polka music. Songs sung were "Be Not Afraid", "Shepherd Me Oh God", "On Eagles Wings", and "Goin Home". Offertory giftbearers were Sara and Kathryn Ragaller. Eucharistic ministers were Betty Ragaller, Steve Ragaller, Kenneth Smith, and Carmen Broadbent.

Pallbearers were David Kostohryz, Merlin Balik, James Puffer, David Puffer, Rob Broadbent, and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Interment was held in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church Cemetery in Spillville.

Balik Funeral Home in Spillville handled the arrangements.

Frank, 92, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at his home.

Frank Louis Puffer was born July 30, 1921 on the family farm north of Conover, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Emma (Bouska) Puffer. Frank attended school at the Conover School and farmed with his parents.

On Nov. 20, 1945, he married Alice Kostohryz at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They farmed the family farm.

Frank enjoyed polkas, playing cards, and especially his granddaughters. Frank was a life-long member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Farm Bureau.

Frank is survived by his wife: Alice of Ridgeway; one son: Ronald Puffer of Ridgeway; one daughter: Betty (Steve) Ragaller of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one son-in-law: Kenneth Smith of Springfield, Missouri; and five grand-daughters: Carmen (Rob) Broadbent, Danielle (Ryan) Fitzpatrick, Sara, Terese and Kathryn Ragaller.

Frank was preceded in death by a daughter: Patricia Smith; his parents; one brother: Joseph (Marcella) Puffer; four sisters: Helen (Louis) Balik, Emma (Thomas) Pecinovsky, Mary (George) Phillips and Christina (Vincent) Kellner; and two brothers-in-law: Raymond (Evelyn) Kostohryz and Edwin Kostohryz.



Kathryn Brinn, 101

WAUWATOSA, WISCONSIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Kathryn R. Brinn of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013 at St. Therese Church in Milwaukee.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11 at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral and Cremation Service in Wauwatosa with a vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday, Nov 12 at St. Therese Church in Milwaukee from 10:30 a.m. until time of the mass followed by procession to Wisconsin Memorial Park for burial.

Kathryn, 101, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2013.

Kathryn Rose (Dozark) Brinn was born Oct. 27, 1912 in Saratoga, Iowa.

Kathryn loved making Christmas cookies and loved working in her flower garden.

Beloved mother of Gloria M. (the late Carl R.) Erkander of Wauwatosa, Raymond C. (Charlotte) Brinn of New Berlin, and John D. (Marlene) Brinn of Brookfield; grandmother of 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband: Raymond W. Brinn; father: Charles Dozark; mother: Antonette Dozark; brother: William Dozark; sisters: Alice Morris and Irene Bayer; daughter-in-law: Elizabeth "Betty" Brinn; and great-grandson: Daniel Meier.


Robert Cameron, 83

BLOOMINGTON, MINNESOTA -Funeral services for Robert "Bob" Cameron of Bloomington, Minn. will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at Normandale Hylands United Methodist Church in Bloomington. Interment will be held in Woodbury Cemetery in Lyle, Minnesota.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at Werness Brothers Chapel, 2300 W Old Shakopee Rd., Bloomington and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Bob, 83, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013.

Robert Cameron was born on Aug. 18, 1930 in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Scott Cameron and Macie Miller.

Bob served in the US Navy from 1951-1955. He was employed 33 years at Control Data.

Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bonny; daughter: Debbie Sisson; grandchildren: Macie and Wesley; sister-in-law: Dolly Caspers; and niece and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Scott and Macie; a sister: Marge Baumgartner; and brothers-in-law: Ray Baumgartner and Carl Caspers.

Memorials preferred to Normandale Hylands United Methodist Church.

Mervin Pecinovsky, 57

PROTIVIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Mervin L. Pecinovsky of Protivin, Iowa was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. Nick March officiating. Marlene Pecinovsky was organist with Miriam Humpal as vocalist. The pall was placed by his son, brother, two sisters and Anita Weiland. Lector was Art Swestka. Pallbearers were Ron Novak, Victor Lukes, Dave Ondrashek, Jim Bouska, Brad Moudry and Allen Moudry. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Recker and Mike Pecinovsky. Interment was held in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Protivin.

Visitation was held from 3-8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25 at the Protivin Community Center where there was a 4 p.m. Rosary.

Hugeback-Johnson's Protivin Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mervin, 57, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 at his home of a farming accident.

Mervin Leonard Pecinovsky was born June 15, 1956, the son of Leonard F. and Rosemary (Kriener) Pecinovsky. He received his education at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Protivin through the 8th grade. He was a 1974, Turkey Valley High School graduate and also graduated from the Area 1 Vo-Tech College in 1976.

On Feb. 12, 1983, he married Sandra Lau in Fayette, Iowa. To this union, one son, Darren was born. The couple later divorced. He remained on the family farm his entire life.

Mervin loved going to farm sales, morning coffee, and the ritual Sunday morning coffee at "Baldy's" with all his buddies. Merv always looked forward to Czech Days.

He loved working at the brat stand and visiting with everyone. Merv spent his entire life on the family farm where he worked closely with his father and son. Planting and harvesting were his favorite times of the year. He had a genuine love for working the land.

Mervin was a jokester and loved to tease his nieces and nephews. He also loved his most recent trips and cruises with his gilrfriend Anita.

Mervin is survived by his son: Darren (Heather) Pecinovsky of Protivin; his father: Leonard Pecinovsky of Cresco; girlfriend: Anita Weiland of Cresco; one brother: Neal (Sandy) Pecinovsky of Mason, Michigan; two sisters: Karen (Tim) Halvorson of Baldwin, Wisconsin and Janet Nulty of Hastings, Minnesota; five nephews: Logan Pecinovsky, Sean Pecinovsky, Ryan Nulty, Erik Halvorson, Chris Halvorson and Alex Halvorson; and two nieces: Lynna Nulty and Liz Nulty.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Rosemary in 1988; one brother-in-law: Jim Nulty in 2000.


Celesta Praska, 81

PROTIVIN - Funeral services for Celesta M. Praska of Protivin, Iowa were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Father Nick March officiating. Interment was held in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Protivin with a wake service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Celesta, 81, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013 at the Cresco Care Center.

Celesta Marie Praska was born June 4, 1932, the daughter of Lewis and Leona (Moravetz) Havel. She attended the rural country school and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in 1951.

On Aug. 25, 1952, she married Richard William Praska at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They made their home on the Praska family farm.

Celesta was active on the farm, helping with chores, mowing lawn and always planted a vegetable garden. She enjoyed playing cards, baking, listening and dancing to polka music and traveling, with the highlight visiting the Czech Republic in 1998. Celesta and Richard enjoyed participating and attending parades and car shows. She was a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Rosary Society, a member of the Czech Choir and served on the Czech Days Quilt Committee for years. Celesta was very devoted to praying the rosary. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Celesta is survived by four children: Steve (Barb) Praska and Sheldon (Mary) Praska both of Cresco, Sue (Gary) Panos of Protivin and Shawn (Sandy) Praska of Cedar Falls, Iowa; six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents; and her brother: Don Havel.
