Patricia Berst, 88 Visitation was held on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco from 4-7 p.m. where there was a 7 p.m. scripture service. No other services were held. Private family interment will take place at a later date at St. Matthews Cemetery in Granger, Minnesota Patricia Berst was born April 24, 1925 in Schley, Iowa, the daughter of Art and Iva (Swenson) Huber. She attended Rudolphinum School in Protivin, Iowa, and graduated from Cresco High School. She enjoyed playing basketball during her school years. She married Manley Leitz in March of 1942. To this union five children were born, Christy, Allen, Donna, David, and Rhonda. Manley passed away in September of 1983. She later married Melvin Berst, and they later divorced. Pat worked with her father at Pioneer Corn, then later worked as a dietician for the Cresco Hospital and the Cresco Care Center. She loved watching hummingbirds, fishing in her younger years, going to girls basketball games, needlework, reading, and spending time with her family during gatherings. She is survived by four children: Allen (Betty) Leitz, Donna (Lowell) Huber, David (Sherry) Leitz, and Rhonda (Dean) Kupka; a sister: Phillis Dotzenrod-Lewis; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manley Leitz; a daughter: Christy Luoma; her parents; a daughter-in-law: Martha Leitz; one sister: Maxine Brackin; and three brothers: Don, Norb, and Kenny Huber. Published: Paul, 82, died Wednesday morning, June 26, 2013. Paul H. Lidtke was born Oct. 24, 1930, at home in Lime Springs, the son of Herman and Ruth Lidtke. He attended the Lime Springs School and graduated in 1951. He married Donna Stevenson and started their life together farming southwest of Davis Corners where they lived happily for 52 years. Paul loved sports and attended Riceville football games through the years. He was a 4-H leader, township trustee and volunteer at the church and in town. He loved taking the grandkids fishing. He was always ready for a game of cards. Paul enjoyed woodworking and gardening. After retirement Paul and Donna moved to Lime Springs and wintered in Texas. In Texas he volunteered at school, the hospital and the park they made home. Paul is survived by his wife, Donna; children: Nancy (Ken) Everman of Postville, Roberta (Rick) Hass of McGregor, Brian (Sheryl) Lidtke of Lime Springs, and JoEllen (Tracey) Franke of Hanover, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister; and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and one brother. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials of your choice be made in Paul's memory.
Marvin Kriener, 60 Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Fort Atkinson is handling the arrangements. Marvin, 60, died Saturday, June 29, 2013 from injuries he received in a tractor rollover accident. Marvin Luke Kriener was born Jan. 2, 1953, at St. Joseph's Hospital in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Chris and Cecilia (Kruse) Kriener. He attended St. Luke's Catholic School and graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1971. He attended NIACC in Mason City and graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in 1975. On July 12, 1975, he married Connie Jean Delger at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion, Iowa. They lived and raised their three children, Heidi, Chris and Craig where they currently live. Urban and Marvin started St. Lucas Implement in St. Lucas. Then he sold Moorman Livestock Feeds from home and in later years, Arbie Scooter Feeds. Marvin sold Knights of Columbus Insurance and recently worked as a Financial Advisor for Primerica. For the last thirty-six years, Marvin was a High School official for area basketball, softball and volleyball games. Marvin enjoyed hunting deer, riding horses, all sports, his dogs and especially socializing with family and friends and anybody he wanted to make smile. And he was always ready to deal. Marvin is survived by his wife: Connie Kriener of Waucoma, Iowa; three children: Heidi Kriener of Alpha, Iowa, Christopher Kriener of Fort Collins, Colo., and Craig Kriener of Cedar Falls, Iowa; three sisters: Agnes Soukup of Ridgeway, Iowa, Ann (Jack) Herold of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, and Rita (Paul) Gerleman of Decorah, Iowa; two brothers: Clarence Kriener of Lawler, Iowa, and Urban (Patricia) Kriener of Waucoma, Iowa; one sister-in-law: Leona Kriener of Cresco, Iowa; father and mother-in-law: Robert and Beverly Delger of Clarion, Iowa; one brother-in-law: David (Patti) Delger of Urbandale, Iowa; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Soukup, 97 Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is handling the arrangements. Grace, 97, died Friday, June 28, 2013 at Wellington Place in Decorah, Iowa. Grace Kathryn Soukup was born Sept. 29, 1915, in Winneshiek County, near Protivin, Iowa, the daughter of Mike and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Haskovec)Hruska. Grace attended Lincoln #4 Country School and Holy Trinity Catholic School in Protivin. On April 27, 1936, she married Arnold Joseph Soukup at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. They farmed near Ridgeway for many years and attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. While on the farm, Grace worked alongside her husband farming. She enjoyed taking care of her chickens and ducks. She was a wonderful cook and baker; making delicious kolaches and cream puffs for all. She and Arnie enjoyed dancing and playing cards. In 1981, they moved to Protivin and she was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. Grace was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved to spend time with her family. Grace is survived by her daughter: Pat (David) Bouska of Ridgeway, Iowa; two granddaughters: Chanda (Lance) Mooney of Marion, Iowa and Kara (Kevin) Koch of Wellington, Fla.; and one grandson: Casey (Laurie) Bouska of Durant, Iowa; five great-grandchildren: Lexi and Jacob Mooney, Sophia, T.J. and Nicole Koch; six nieces and nephews: Elaine (Carroll) Doherty, Rita (Rick) Vettraino, Kenny (Norma) Carolan, Clifford (Judy) Carolan, Randy (Ellen) Carolan, and Mark (friend, Ruth) Carolan. Grace was preceded in death by her husband: Arnold Soukup on Oct. 8, 1999; her parents; one brother-in-law: Herman (Elvira) Soukup; one sister-in-law: Helen (Fred) Carolan; three nephews: Walter, Roger, and Stanley Carolan; and one great niece: Dawn Doherty.
Francis ‘Fritz’ J. Shatek, 79 Mass of Christian burial was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 2 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes with Father Steve Garner celebrating mass. Burial was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery at Lourdes with Fritz’s grandchildren serving as honorary casket bearers and Nancy Shatek-Suek, Don Suek, Tom Shatek, Pauline Shatek, Mark Shatek, Amy Shatek, Tim Shatek and Gayle Shatek serving as active casketbearers. Military rites by the Elma John Frahm American Legion Post #597. Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Monday, July 1 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma. There was a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continued at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the family or donor’s choice. Francis “Fritz” John Shatek was born on October 6, 1933 to Joseph and Mary (Komarek) Shatek on the family farm near Lourdes, Iowa, where he lived his entire life. He attended country school near Lourdes. Fritz worked on the family farm before entering the US Army in 1953. After his honorable discharge he returned to the farm which later became a century farm. He was united in marriage to Lavonne “Bonnie” Gilbert on September 27, 1958 at St. Boniface Church in Ionia. The couple made their home on the family farm where they raised their four children. Fritz farmed all of his life and enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, playing cards, collecting toy tractors and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the Farm Bureau. Fritz is survived by his wife Lavonne “Bonnie” of Elma; children Nancy (Don) Suek of St. Paul, Minnesota, Tom (Pauline) Shatek of Elma, Mark (Amy) Shatek of Cedar Falls, and Tim (Gayle) Shatek of Mason City; 11 grandchildren: Erin and Amy Suek, Brad (Jamie) Shatek, Jennifer, Nikki and Eric Shatek, Elizabeth and Josephine Shatek, Sydney, Emily and Hadley Shatek; sister Celia Kapler of Cresco; brothers Clarence Shatek of Elma, Joseph Shatek of Fort Atkinson, Leonard Shatek of Elma and John (Margaret) Shatek of Elma; and many special nieces and nephews. Charles Neubauer, 75 Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Heritage Event Center in Cresco. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements. Charles, 75, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Regional Health Center in Cresco, Iowa. Charles James Neubauer was born Feb. 3, 1938, in Howard County, Iowa, the son of James and Esther (Drtina) Neubauer. He attended Howard County rural schools and graduated from Cresco High School in 1956. Charles was active in both basketball and football. On June 13, 1959, he married Wanda Watros at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cresco, Iowa. Charles began his career in the Howard County Engineering Department, responsible for surveying, bridge and road design, material testing and approval, inspections and construction management. He obtained his training from Iowa State University in Ames and Mason City which specialized in the design, construction, and repair of bridges and roads. He achieved the position of Chief of Surveying and was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. In 1981, Charles became head of the Engineering Department of Hawkeye Tri-County REC in Cresco, Iowa. He was later promoted to Operations Manager, responsible for long and short range system planning, design, and inspection of all facilities in Hawkeye's electric distribution system. He developed sectionalizing and engineering studies as well as operation plans. Charles supervised operations, engineering and purchasing before retiring in 2003. In his leisure time, Charles enjoyed fishing, traveling, gardening, following his favorite sports teams and spending time with his family. Charles is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wanda; and their daughter: Terri. He was preceded in death by his father: James Neubauer; and his mother and step-father: Esther and Willard Jones.
Edward Pettit, 71 Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. at the church on Friday, July 12. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services are handling the arrangements. Edward, 71, died Friday, July 5, 2013 at his home. Edward Leroy Pettit was born Jan. 22, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Edward and Josephine (Behles) Pettit. He has lived in this area all of his life: Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Ainsworth and North Liberty. Ed worked for most of his life in the construction industry as a Heavy Equipment Operator and some years in the restaurant industry. Employers included: Coralville Excavating, Bowman Construction, Iowa City Excavating, Frantz Construction companies, Roberts Dairy and The Carousel restaurant. He retired in 2005 after over 50 years of hard labor yet continued to work part time up until the fall of 2012. Ed enjoyed traveling, cars, music, photography, and most importantly he loved spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City. He is survived by his children: Dennis Pettit (Lisa Stultz) of Iowa City, Russell Jarvis (Colleen) of Cedar Rapids, Steve Jarvis (Suzi) of Sebree, Kentucky; grandchildren, great grandchildren and his siblings: Don Pettit (Evelyn) of Waterloo, Cliff Pettit of Iowa City, Tom Pettit of North Liberty, Ken Pettit of North Liberty, Jenny Mitchell of Iowa City and sister in law: Judy Pettit of Iowa City. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Emmett Pettit and Joseph Dewayne Pettit. Jack Beddow, 66 Jack, 66, died Friday, July 5, 2013 surrounded by the love of his family. Jack Wayne Beddow was born April 1, 1947, in Forest City, Iowa, the son of Donald and Charlotte (Cooke) Beddow. In 1959 he moved with his parents to a farm north of Chester, Iowa. Farming was his dad's and his greatest love. He attended school in LeRoy, Minnesota and married Jolene Noe on December 29, 1963 in Lime Springs, Iowa. They have two children, Jeffrey Scott and Jill Annette. They farmed in the Lime Springs and Chester area until 1986 when they both started work at Hormel Foods, retiring in 2011. Jack was everyone's "fixer." There was nothing he couldn't figure out a way to make work. He enjoyed many trips out West with Jeff and Jill, and fishing on Lake of the Woods. When the grandchildren (six of them) came along, he had great joy in snowmobiling, biking, and sleepovers at Grandpa and Grandma's. He loved the hours spent with them. His and Jolene's greatest enjoyment was snowmobiling "Up North" - Gunflint Trail - Aspen Lodge. Mark and his crew made it a great home away from home - The Trail Center, Hungry Jack Lodge, miles and miles of trails. He is survived by his wife: Jolene of Brownsdale, Minnesota; his son: Jeff (Judi) Beddow and their children, Justin, Josh, Jarod, and Janell of Dodge Center, Minnesota; his daughter: Jill (Lee) Gooder and their children, Shelley and Zach; his mother: Charlotte Beddow of Chester; father-in-law: Harold Noe Sr. of Spring Valley; brothers: Tom Beddow of Chester and Jim (Carmen) Beddow of Stewartville; his sister: Deb Driscall of Kasson, Minnesota; his in-laws: Harold (Carrie) Noe Jr. of Cresco, Iowa; Bert (Joy) Noe of Rochester, Minnesota; Marolyn (Merlynn) Hetrick of Texas; Carolyn Eddy of Wyoming; Judy (David) Jacobson of Cresco, Iowa; and Jan (Bob) Behnken of South St. Paul; and many nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews who always thought of him as their "Hero." Alfreda Koshatka, 89 Visitation was held 4-8 p.m. on Monday, July 9 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Protivin with a rosary at 4 p.m. and scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Alfreda, 89, died Thursday, July 4, 2013 at home surrounded by her family. Alfreda Catherine Koshatka was born April 10, 1924, in St. Lucas, Iowa, the daughter of William and Anna (Croatt) Mihm. She lived on the Mihm family farm just outside of St. Lucas until she married Clet Koshatka on June 25, 1947 at St. Lukes Catholic Church in St. Lucas. Clet and Alfreda had four children together: Ken, Kathleen Ann, Mary Kay and Don. After their marriage, Alfreda and Clet lived in Des Moines where she worked as a sales person for the Younkers & Brothers Department Store for one and one-half years before moving to the Protivin community. For most of Alfreda's adult life she worked alongside Clet as co-owner and bookkeeper of their business, Clet Koshatka Farm Equipment. Alfreda also established and owned The Guest House in Protivin, Iowa. Alfreda enjoyed many things in life but especially enjoyed her family, visiting with her friends and relatives, traveling, going to auctions, collecting glassware treasures and cups, and playing cards. She also enjoyed participating in community activities. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1949; served on the Board of Directors of the Evans Home; was instrumental in founding the Protivin Chapter of the American Legion Junior Auxiliary and the Holy Trinity Parish Arts and Crafts Show; and held officer positions for both the American Legion Auxiliary as well as the Holy Trinity Rosary Society. Alfreda is survived by three children: Ken (Mary Grayce) Koshatka of Rochester, Minnesota, Mary Kay (Lyle) Klimesh of Wilmette, Illinois, and Don (Connie) Koshatka who live in the rural Protivin area; eight grandchildren: Kelly Koshatka, Jennifer (Michael) Seman, Molly Koshatka, Benjamin (Cassie) Koshatka; Dr. Alison (Bryce) Patterson, Bennett Klimesh; Hannah and Beth Koshatka; six great-grandchildren: Cade Shahady; Grace, Levi and Zeke Koshatka; Laird and Grace Patterson; and a sister: Alice Kacher of Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Shay Peckham, 17 Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the Heritage Event Center in Cresco. Shay, 17, died Sunday, July 14, 2013 in New Hampton, Iowa. Shay Elizabeth Peckham was born Feb. 8, 1996, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Jeff and Colleen (Conway) Peckham. Shay grew up on the farm northwest of Cresco where she developed a strong love of the animals. She received her education in the Notre Dame Elementary School, Crestwood Junior High, and would have started her senior year at Crestwood High School. Shay has been active in Crestwood volleyball, track, and softball, and was the boys basketball manager. She was a member of the Crestwood FFA and the Millennium Master 4-H Club. Shay played Granger-Florenceville softball in her younger years. She has shown cattle, sheep, dogs, and horses at the Mighty Howard County Fair. Shay had two photographs that she had shown at the fair and went on to the Iowa State Fair. She loved the animals at the farm, especially Twinkletoes; her cow, Domino; her horse, and the dogs; Grace, Calley, Willow, and Holly, and many cats. Her plans were to become a Vet Tech and work with animals and farm with her dad. She loved the outdoors, including farming and hunting with her dad, brothers, and the Golden Ridge Gang. Shay is survived by her parents, Jeff and Colleen Peckham; two brothers: Sawyer and Stone Peckham all of Lime Springs; her boyfriend: Jesse Johnson of New Hampton; paternal grandmother: Lorraine Peckham; and maternal grandparents: Don and Camilla Conway all of Cresco; paternal great-grandmother: Irene Aarre of Preston, Minnesota; aunts and uncles: Joy (Bill Caffrey) Peckham, and her children, Rebecca, Kyle, and Lee, Jim Conway, Joellyn (Mike) Berg, and their children, Samantha (Jason) Hrdlicka, Tasha (Jerry Fay) Berg, David and Alex, Cari (Jamie) Hoppe, and their children, Ethan, Alexis, Austin, Emmaly all of Cresco; and several cousins. Robert Owens Sr., 96
Published: Robert died July 9, 2013, five years to the day after the death of his beloved wife, Joan Engeldinge Owens. Robert W. Owens, Sr. was born Nov. 27, 1916, in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Lawrence J. and Clara (Schuetz) Owens. Bob graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Journalism in 1939, entering the broadcast business at radio stations in Winona and Duluth. He served during WWII as a supply officer for the Army's 35th Evacuation Hospital, which landed at Normandy 16 days after D-Day. After the war, he launched a long and successful career, retiring from sales at KSTP-TV in 1985. He was a fine writer who left his memoirs and treasure trove of letters to his family. He was a consummate family man, whose devotion to his wife during her long battle with Alzheimer's Disease exemplified his love of family and caring nature. He supported his church and many charities in his long life, and was especially dedicated to supporting access to education for all students. To that end, he and Joan endowed two scholarships, one at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa; and one at the University of Minnesota. In his retirement, he and Joan traveled the globe and were longtime members of the Edina Country Club, where he golfed into his nineties. He will be remembered especially for his intelligence and humor, warmth and generosity. Robert is survived by his children: Marie Terese Owens, Elizabeth Owens (Douglass Faherty), Robert William Owens, Jr. (Maria Weibeck); grandchildren: Laura (Paul) O'Flanagan, Anna Owens Faherty and John (Jack) Owens Faherty, and Nicholas Weinbeck Owens; great-granddaughters: Eleanor Joan O'Flanagan and Rose Alyssa O'Flanagan; nieces and nephews. William Laue, 65 Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 11 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Bill, 65, died Monday, July 8, 2013 at the Country Winds Manor in Cresco. William Diedrich Laue was born Jan. 24, 1948, in Elma, Iowa, the son of Herman and Clara (Stevenson) Laue and grew up on a farm near Maple Leaf. He graduated in 1966 from Crestwood High School in Cresco. On Jan. 21, 1967, Bill married Janice Kay Abbas at Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista, Iowa. The couple had four children. After high school Bill worked at John Deere in Waterloo until 1972. The couple started farming and in 1973 purchased a farm near Maple Leaf where they raised their family. The couple later divorced. Bill started working for the Donaldson Company, Inc. in Cresco in 1977, and was a member of UAW Local #120. He eventually retired from farming, moved to Cresco, and retired from Donaldson's in 1998. Bill was a member of St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in Elma. Bill is survived by his children: Michael (Carleen) Laue of Charles City, Iowa, Michelle (Robert) Sievert of Claremore, Oklahoma, Melissa (Gerry) Pickar of Nowata, Oklahoma, and Mitch (Deb Nichols) Laue of Waverly, Iowa; his sisters: Maxine Friedrich of Elma, Alice (Dean) Schroeder of Chester, Iowa, Anne Mae Wolfgram of Fairbank, Iowa, and Sharon (Gary) Zajik of Charles City, Iowa; his brothers: Dale Laue of Elma and Gary (Ann) Laue of Phoenix, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Paul Haight, 93 Visitation was held from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, June 27 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Visitation was held one hour prior to the services at the church. Paul 93, died Sunday, June 23, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota Paul Haight was born Jan. 26, 1920, the son of Chester and Lela (VanSyoc) Haight. He graduated high school in 1938 and served as class president his senior year and received the outstanding senior activities award. He entered Iowa State College where he worked his way through school. He was elected Social Chairman for the entire school his junior year. Paul graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State College in 1943. In the fall of that year, Paul married Evelyn Thomas. After practicing in Colorado and Illinois for one year, he returned to Iowa, coming to Cresco in October of 1944, he entered into partnership with Dr. R.B. Helming. He also served as the area representative to the Iowa Veterinary Association. He was a member of the Cresco Methodist Church, where he served on the Church Board for many years as Chairman of the Building Committee for Remodeling, as steward, trustee, and layleader. He was very active in Kiwanis as well, serving as President, and foremost spearheaded Kiwanian interest in what has become the Evans Memorial Home. He was appointed Chairman of the Community Building Committee and upon completion of the home, served as its first President and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He remained an active board member and served again as its President in 1966. Paul was also a member in the Cresco Masonic Lodge #150, he was past Worshipful Master; a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner. He was an enthusiastic Scouter, being the Chairman of Boy Scout Troup #63, a past President of the Cresco Country Club, and also was on the Board of the Cresco Chamber of Commerce. Paul loved to golf, hunting locally as well as hunting deer and moose and fishing in Canada. His accomplishments are not complete by listing his activities as we have. For many in areas not mentioned have been approached by this very concerned man who has asked if there is something that can be done, if there isn't something he could do. He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Cresco, Iowa; a daughter: Carol (Jim) Amundson of Grovertown, Indiana; a son: Ron of Houston, Texas; a grandson: Eric Amundson of Phoenix, Arizona; and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister: Lorna Fry; and three brothers: Orlo, Virgil, and Keith. Memorials are preferred to the Cresco United Methodist Church or Cresco Kiwanis.
Visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Gary, 74, died Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Garyl D. Miller was born Dec. 13, 1938, in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Darwin and Elsie (Lovell) Miller. He grew up on the farm and attended Cresco High School. Following high school he attended the University of Iowa attaining a BA degree in 1963. Gary went on to attend Iowa State University graduating in 1972 with a Master's Degree in Sociology. On Aug. 25, 1979 he married Cathy Foresman at the Presbyterian Church in Des Moines. Gary worked at The Iowa School for Boys in Eldora, The Department of Elder Affairs in Des Moines and as a Statistician with the State of Iowa for 28 years before retiring in 2000. The family has settled in Indianola for the last 33 years. Gary was an avid reader. He cheered on and attended the Iowa State Cyclones in the annual Iowa/Iowa State football games. He enjoyed collecting railroad timetables. He loved visiting his farm ground in Guthrie County and Northeast Iowa. Gary is survived by his wife: Cathy Miller of Indianola; and a sister: Marva Lee Miller of Cresco. He was preceded in death by his parents. Kenneth O'Kada, 75 Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Kenneth, 75, died Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Iowa City VA Health Care System in Iowa City, Iowa. Kenneth D. O'Kada was born on Nov. 5, 1937 in Cresco, Iowa the son of Henry and Violet (Betts) O'Kada. He was a Cresco High School state wrestling champion. Ken attended Iowa State University for a few years, and then joined the United States Navy. On Nov. 1, 1969, he married Susanne Glenna. They farmed the Lime Springs and Cresco areas. He was a Disabled American Veteran and American Legion Post #135 member. Ken is survived by his wife: Susanne of Lime Springs; son: Daniel (Hyunji) of Harmony, Minnesota, who are expecting twins in November; daughter: Kimberly of West Union, Iowa, and her children, Brittany, Aaron, Tyler, Torin, Martin, and Emma, his siblings, Carl, Glen, Ida (Pete) Krueger, and June O'Kada. Published: Robert graduated from Cresco High School in 1936. Dora graduated in 1935. Robert's parents owned the Layton Rexall Drug Store in Cresco where Dora was an employee. She later worked for the Iowa Power and Light Company. After Robert returned from WWII having served in the Army Air Corps, he managed the drug store from 1936-1946. Robert and Dora were married in 1946. Dora was a member of The Order of Eastern Star. Robert was a member of the Cresco Volunteer Fire Department and The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Lavonne Bouska, 56 Friends may greet the family from 3-8 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at the Protivin Community Center. There will be no visitation on the morning of the funeral. Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Lavonne, 56, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, from injuries sustained during a motor vehicle accident. Lavonne Denise Bouska was born Feb. 11, 1957 in Osage, Iowa, the daughter of Ronald and Audrey (Newhouse) Oulman. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Riceville, attended the Riceville Community Schools, where she graduated in 1975. After graduating high school she attended school in Pittsburg, held jobs in Omaha and Colorado; then moved back to the Iowa area, where she met her future husband. On June 21, 1980, she married Joe Bouska of rural Fort Atkinson at Phelps Park in Decorah, Iowa. Lavonne helped maintain the family farm while raising their four children. Lavonne was an accomplished artist; painting, drawing, sandblasting stones, and daily came up with a new craft/yard project. She was a devoted wife, mother to all, and daughter, and truly adored her family. She always put helping others above herself and enjoyed lending a hand to family, friends, and neighbors. Lavonne loved to be outside, feel the sun on her face and the wind in her hair. One of Lavonne's favorite things was to be with Joe. She enjoyed being on the motorcyle with him and riding on her own scooter. She was currently an active member of the Holy Trinity Parish, working at parish events and she loved to Christmas carol. She was joyfully looking forward to the births of her first two grandchildren this fall. Lavonne is survived by her husband, Joe; one daughter: Michala Bouska (Ian Floro) of New Albany, Indiana; three sons: Luke (Tara) of Ankeny, Iowa, Liberty Bouska (Crystal Wilson) of Elkhart, Iowa, Lance (Kelly) of Fort Atkinson, Iowa; her parents: Ronald and Audrey Oulman of Riceville; siblings: Duane (Dee) Oulman; Keith Oulman; Roni Rae (Steve) Anderlik, Sue Rawhouser all of Riceville, Iowa; Michele (Jerry) Rosenblad of Stewartville, Minnesota, Linda (Ed) Klimesh of Spillville, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents: Nathan and Grace Oulman; materal grandparents: Onie Mayo and Viva Newhouse; two nieces: Jodi Oulman and Darci Rawhouser; one nephew: Allen Meyer; brothers-in-law: Darrel Rawhouser and John Bouska; brother-in-law: Jim and his wife Debbie Bouska; and mother and father-in-law: Francis and Pauline Bouska.
Gerald Drilling, 85 There will be no visitation. Gerald, 85, died Friday, July 12, 2013 at home of natural causes. Gerald Joseph Drilling was born May 2, 1928, the son of Joseph Henry Drilling and Geneva (Ahern) Drilling. On Oct. 17, 1953, he married Joanne Bertha Maxfield in Waterloo. Gerald graduated from Assumption High School in Cresco. He served in the Navy from 1946-1948 and then in the reserves until 1953. He worked in the power plant at Rath Packing in Waterloo until the doors closed in 1985. He is survived by six daughters: Jody (Marsha Pollow) Maxfield of Des Moines, Gina (George) Wagner of Norwalk, Peggy Drilling of Jesup, Maureen (Andy) Apel of Raymond, Mary Terry of Otterville, Rose Ivy of Independence; three sons: Kenny (Cathy) Drilling of Isanti, Minnesota, Marty (Marie) Drilling of Waterloo and Steve Drilling of Waterloo; 20 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Gerald was preceded in death by his wife: Joanne; daughter: Christine Lacey; a brother: Orvine Drilling; a sister: Alvira McGee; a son-in-law: Mel Ivy; and one grandson; and one great-grandson. Bernice Houser, 90 Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. on Monday, July 22 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the church. Ionia Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Bernice, 90, died Friday, July 19, 2013 at the Cresco Care Center. Bernice Mabel Houser was born Aug. 19, 1922, on the family farm in Deerfield Township, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Bertha (Boehmer) Pickar. She received her education in country school in Deerfield Township in rural Chickasaw County. After her education, Bernice then worked various outside jobs until she met and married her husband, William Arthur Houser on January 31, 1944 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. They made their home in Deerfield Township on a farm near her parents. To this union six children were born; Marilyn, Daniel, Joyce, Thomas, Janice and Michael. In 1969, William "Art" passed away. Bernice then continued her education at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, Iowa where she earned her LPN nursing license. She then worked at Riceville Nursing Home and Colonial Manor in Elma until retiring in 1989. After retirement Bernice enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, shopping, quilting and sewing. She especially enjoyed raising her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, and was an active Eucharistic Minister. In 2002, Bernice entered into the nursing home where she resided until her passing. Bernice is survived by her children: Marilyn Kriener of Cresco, Iowa, Daniel Houser of Elma, Iowa, Thomas (Cindy) Houser of Riceville, Iowa, Janice (Jerry) Maher of Valparaiso, Nebraska, and Michael (Dannae) Houser of Solomon, Kansas; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her brothers: Stanley Pickar of Garden Grove, California and Mike (Edna) Pickar of New Hampton, Iowa; her sisters-in-law: Rosalie Pickar and Gertrude Houser, both of New Hampton, Iowa; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents; one daughter: Joyce (Tom) Webb; her sons-in-law: Edward Kriener and Gary Clem; her grandsons: Daniel Joseph Webb, Jeffrey Miller and Jacob Houser; her brothers: James and Bernard Pickar; and sisters-in-law: JoAnne Pickar and Joan Pickar.

James, 76, died Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Golden Living East where he had resided since April. Previously he had lived the past two years at Sunrise Cottages. James Patrick Miller was born Aug. 19, 1936 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Claud and Stella (Hyberger) Miller. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in Cresco, Iowa in 1954. He then served in the US Navy, and received his education in Journalism while serving in the military. On June 29, 1960, he married Joyce Funke in Cresco, Iowa. His newspaper and journalism career moved him to various cities throughout his career, including Imperial Beach, Calif., Fremont, Neb., Stewartville, Plainview, and Lake City prior to his retirement and move to Rochester. While in Lake City, he spent 19 years as co-owner and editor of the Lake City Graphic & Hiawatha Design. During those years, his wife assisted him in the newspaper office. Surviving with his wife, Joyce, of Rochester are his five children: Andrew (Peggy) Miller of Byron, Chet Miller, and Jennifer Seeger both of Lake City, Lisa Miller of League City, Texas and Sandra Erickson of Friendswood, Texas; 13 grandchildren: James Erickson (Sarah), Sue Schroeder (Mike), Tabitha Miller, Drew Miller (Amanda), Bobbi Jo Miller, McKenzie Miller, Sam Wilson (Stephanie) , Kayla Wilson, Cody Robinson, Shane Miller (Amanda), and Alex, Kadey, and Kalley Seeger; eight great-grandchildren: Sam, Eli, Emma, Ryan, Shelby, Kaylynn, Ayden, and Jonathan, and his siblings: Claudelle Tiedemann and Steven Miller both of Des Moines, Iowa. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Jack, 86, died Monday, July 29, 2013 at home surrounded by his family. John R. Daley was born April 6, 1927, in Howard County, the son of Loretta (Harris) and John J. Daley. He attended country school until the 8th grade and later received his GED. On June 23, 1953, he married Mildred Polashek at St. Joe's in Cresco, Iowa. In 1953, he was drafted into the Army serving in the Korean Conflict until 1955. After returning home, Jack joined his father in farming and later joined his brother, Bill, in partnership for 35 years, retiring in 1989. He always said he shouldn't have retired because he loved farming. Fishing was a huge hobby of Jack's, traveling to Northern Minnesota with neighbors, friends, and family. Reading, telling stories, and playing cards were some other pastimes Jack enjoyed. Jack was a member of the Catholic Order of Forester's, Cresco Wildlife Club, VFW, and served on the church parish council at Assumption. Henry Murray, Sr., 79 Visitation was held 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 28 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with a vigil service held at 3:30 p.m. Hank, 79, died Tuesday, July 23, 2013 peacefully at his home following a lengthy illness. Henry R. Murray, Sr. was born Oct. 2, 1933, in Cresco, Iowa, the seventh of eight children of Raymond and Margaret (Coughlin) Murray. He was a graduate of Cresco High School and attended the University of Iowa where he received a scholarship to play baseball. Hank was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity where he met his wife, Connie McNamara, at a fraternity-sorority exchange dance. On July 16, 1955 they married at St. Mary's Church and continued to dance together for the next six decades. They could often be seen laughing and enjoying themselves on their standing Saturday date night. Hank was employed, and later managed, the McNamara Furniture Store on the corner of Linn and Washington Streets in Iowa City, a business which was established in 1928 by his father-in-law. He was later associated with Robison Furniture and People's Furniture. In their later years, after raising eight kids, Hank and Connie enjoyed traveling. Some of their favorite destinations were New York, Ireland and Chicago - "his kind of town." Hank was a proud Irish Catholic Democrat whose life exemplified the values of faith, loyalty, commitment and social justice - always advocating for the underdog. He was an avid Hawkeye and White Sox fan with a passion for telling entertaining stories and making others laugh!
